Dr. Kesling is a really good teacher and is always willing to take time to help his students. At first he is a bit intiminating, but if you study and work hard you will learn a lot. I'd definatly choose him again, and he's definatly the best for Chem 111.
He is a pretty good teacher. Obsessed with dry humour and he tells pretty good stories occasionally. His class may be slightly harder than Coker's but I can't be sure. He Will help you if you need it (in fact he is emphatic about people coming at office hours) class can be pretty challengeing, you have to study a good amount or you will do poorly
He's a great teacher. BUT he's hard/ well Chemistry is just hard for me in general. He will help you, and if you can't make his office hours, he'll set up time to see you whenever he can! I am going to take him again for my other chem class. He will tell you how much to study... ALOT. like 2 hours for ever hour of class! But He is good! take him
Some say his tests make your head hurt, but nothing hurts like a Chuck Norris Roundhouse Kick. Some say he is scary, but Chuck Norris invented scary. Haha Seriously, Dr. Kesling is awesome and everyone taking Chem 111 or 113 should take him. He is definitely my favorite professor at Campbell.
I must say that Dr. Kesling is one of my favorite professors by far. He does expect a lot out of you as a student, so you have to work hard to get a good grade. But he is very willing to help you understand the material and prepare you for tests. I would highly recomend!
his tests are impossible... he will help you whenever you need it... but that might not help you much on his tests... he's a really nice person though.
Great teacher. Really made lecture fun. He actually connected what we were talking about to real life applications. He is really funny, so it made class go by quickly. Would definitely take another class with him!
Don't ask him questions, he won't be on your good side.
Dr. Kesling is a GREAT professor. What left me with a great impression of him was the fact that he was so willing to help outside of class or after class. He would go over a problem for the 20th time just like he did the first if he had to. He is a great teacher and to be honest, he was intimidating at first, but he is great overall!
He is a very nice guy! He will do whatever he can to help you out!!!! He had tests online that helped out a lot!!! I thought he was hot too!!!
Dr. Kesling knows his stuff but you have to go outside of class to really learn the material. He flies through his lectures and doesn't take enough to time to explain things. He has this overly passive attitude that comes off like he really doesn't care. BUT if you go to his office, it is completely different. Take him if your good at self study.
I like dr. kesling. he does do a good job of explaining things. he spends a lot of time if you go to his office. i think he want let you leave until you get it. i think he works out alot. he is thick.
I had Dr. Kesling for Chem-111 and Chem-113 and really enjoyed both semesters. His teaching is very straightforward, but he tells a lot of jokes and funny stories so class is a lot of fun. He is very willing to help you learn the material even if he has to explain it a couple of times. I would definitely recommend taking his class!
Hard and unfair teacher. Multiple choice tests. but quizes are hard and he is mean in class. but he is helpful outside of class. Avoid him if you can.
very sarcastic sense of humor, but willing to spend lots of time to help you understand the material. very hard tests during the year, but doesn't try to kill you on the final. be prepared to do lots of book problems and you'll be fine.
Tests are difficult; however, if you are willing to do the homework you will be completely prepared. Must be able to self-motivate. Very sarcastic, very very intelligent. Helpful out of class
He is a great Professor...he is very helpful and very sarcastic..but makes lecture funn and time goes by really fast...Overall, I would recommend taking him for Chemistry...:-D
You will need to work your butt off in this class. You will have to earn your grade. However, if you do the problems in the book and go to his office when you need help you should do fine. And one more thing, the quizzes before lab are crazy hard.
Dr. Kesling is the man. His class is tough, but only if you don't read the material and do the homework problems. Just do what he tells you to do and you can come out with an A in his class no problem. He is very helpful outside of class and is a funny guy too.
Dr. Kesling is a great teacher, very funny! His class is hard, but if u ask for help he'll give it 2 u. Study for this class and u'll do fine!!
chemistry is not easy. he can be intimidating in class, but like he says himself, you pay too much to be afraid to talk to a professor. so go get help if you need it!
He's hard, but you'll learn the material
He is soooo fine, i could listen to him speak all day long!!!
Love love love Kesling!!! Chemistry is hard and its college so you cant expect it to be a breeze but if you are struggling he will meet you half way and help you learn the material. He is always available to help and as long as you do the homework and webassign you'll be ok. dont let the shoulder intimidate you. great guy!!
I TOOK GNE CHEM 1 WITH DR. KESLING LAST YEAR. PEOPLE TOLD ME THAT DR. KELSING IS INTIMIDATING. NOT AFTER I BRUISED HIM MENTALLY. I BROWBEAT HIM ONE DAY IN HIS OFFICE AND HE HAS BEEN EATING OUT OF MY HAND EVER SINSE. HIS TEST ARE HARD, BUT HE REALLY KNOWS HOW TEACH. I LEARNED MORE THAN I THOUGHT I COULD.HE HELPED ME CHANGE MY MAJOR TO BIOCHEMISTR
Bull. You did not "browbeat" kesling and I can promise you that. And he was not "eating out of your hand." Grow up, no one cares and you are not an all amazing student. Youre no different than anyone else so go back to your room, sit all alone, and get over yourself. Other than the kid below me, Kesling is the man and one of the best.
I love Dr. Kesling. He is a great teacher and one of my favorites. I wanted him again this semester but it wouldn't fit into my schedule. He is really nice and funny and makes class interesting.
I didn't think I liked Kesling (he seems kind of cocky) until I had another teacher, and then I realized his teaching style is a lot more compatible with my way of learning. It is hard to say which basic chem teacher is better because they all teach differently.
I absolutely loved Dr. Kesling. He seemed very intimidating at the beginning but in the end he really ended up to be a really nice professor. If you need help he is not going to reject you. His tests were hard but it taught you that if you could pass his tests, you knew your chemistry. I would definitely recommend Dr. Kesling to anyone.
Im pretty sure kesling has rated himself on here. if you read all of these you see he has some whack sense of humor. not everyone comes to class to hear that. some of us want to learn. i tried to ask questions in class and he made me feel terrible. he is rude and inconsiderate. not helpful. if he was so great he would not be a teacher.
Dr. Kesling was an amazing professor. Challenging, but very helpful. You actually have to make an effort to go see him and he never denies help to those who seek it. He is also hilarious and sarcastic (which is even better). You definitely know what you're doing when you get out of his class. Overall, he is a great professor & an even better person
Kesling is an awesome chem teacher. He is very sarcastic and tells you like it is, which some people don't like. He can be intimidating but will always help you if you need it, so don't be afraid to go to his office if you need help. His tests are hard but if you do good then you really know the material. I highly recommend Kesling, he's awesome!
Dr. Kesling gets 3 F's from me because he is FIRM, FAIR, and FRANK. He tells it like it is. He is very fair I have seen him go out of his way to help students. He practically begs them to come to his office for to get help if you need it. If you can't stant the heat get our of science major.
great teacher. hard tests, but really prepares you for the next level. after i had him in chem I, chem ii is much easier. simple rule for sucess. study hard and if you don't and make a bad grade stop whinning. he has a tough exterior, but 1 on 1 or in small groups he is a very nice
Try to avoid this professor as much as you can, He is the worst CHEM teacher I've ever had!! he is always make you feel you are so bad. He always make fun of student which make you feel horrible when you ask him in class!
Dr. Kesling is very intimadating in class, but he is super helpful out of class... which is the opposite of Coker. I made a 88.5 but that was only because I didn't study..... you'll do fine but it takes a lot of work if it doesn't come natural to you
People think Kesling is unapproachable because he is sarcastic, but the truth is that if he sees how hard you are working he is more than willing to help during his office hours. Go to SI and complete all homework and he will take not of how hard you are working. I worked hard in Chem 112 and 113 with him and he remembers who I am!
You won't find a teacher who lays out his expectations more clearly than Dr. Kesling. You also won't ever find a teacher who is more caring or more willing to help than he is. He is sarcastic during class, but as a general rule, it seems to put people more at ease. He is an extremely good teacher who really cares about his students.
I didn't find him helpful AT ALL. He favors athletes and people who come to him every day with questions. He can be funny, but most of the time he just makes rude and sarcastic remarks & is offensive. He does NOT teach the material and doesn't give straight and helpful answers, he just shows you how to do a problem without explaining it.
Only Chem professor worth taking. You will have to work for your grade, but unlike the other chem classes you will actually know what you are doing. He tells you exactly what he expects, gives you questions ahead of time, and gives extra credit. He's sarcastic, but worth taking.
Kesling is awesome, you have to work, but if you need assistance he is more than happy to provide it.
Dr. Kesling is very clear in what he expects of you, and he is always willing to help those who work hard. He is sarcastic and funny and really cares about his students. Just read the sections, do the work, and ask for help if needed.
This class is not as hard as you would expect. Actually, it's not bad at all. But as Kesling will tell you a million times you HAVE to do your work. You have to do your homework and practice problems and most importantly ask questions. Kesling doesn't bite..sure he's sarcastic but that's his sense of humor! He will help you if you ask for it!
Personally, I wish I had went with a different professor. I feel like I was mainly learning the concepts on my own. To be fair, he does give you practice worksheets and goes over certain prolems with you. Be prepared to be put on the spot in this class. He calls on a few people to answer questions every class period.
He is my favorite professor! Helped me a lot to get me through my college career, He is funny and never makes his class boring. Ask for his help and he will be there for you. Make sure you studydo homework and do practice tests!
I feel like we have to teach ourselves in this class. He gives us homework to practice, but I feel like it would be easier if he used powerpoints in class so we can take notes and work everything out step by step
Very pretentious, egotistical, and diabolical. He has a lot to say about the "rich kids" assuming they all have few brain cells and deep pockets when in actuality most are on scholarship. He never replies to emails, shows up for his office hours, and he doesn't lecture at all. Don't take this class, you will be teaching Chemistry to yourself.
I would highly recommend Dr. Kesling, but there is a lot of work involved in the class as it is with any chemistry class in general.
He is more helpful than the other Chem teachers and he seems to care that you do well in his class. I would rather take him than any other Chem 111 or 113 professor.
Great professor. Willing to help. A little snobby, but is an okay guy.
All of the chemistry courses at Campbell require TONS of reading and homework. Kesling at least will take into consideration your effort in the class (participation, attending SI/tutoring, homework completion) when determining your grade. He likes to rant for about half the class, but when he actually teaches, he's brilliant!
Kesling's class is tough, but if you read the chapters and do the homework you will be fine. He is always willing to help. I suggest spending at least an hour a day studying for his class. Good luck!
I am a retired Veteran and he is someone that would fit right in with my group of friends. He is honest, a realist, and sometimes the truth hurts. His class took more work took much more work than I was willing to put in. If I had taken this class 15 years ago, he would have been my favorite professor. 15 years without math makes this class tough.
This is not an easy class, with any chemistry teacher. Kesling is tough but if you put in the effort, it is possible. Don't listen to people that talk poorly of him. He is there to help when you need it - and the more effort you put in, the more he will put in. Read the book, do the homework and DO NOT get behind.
Great teacher. He is very sarcastic, but teaches things well.
Had a terrible Gen Chem teacher and then I got Dr. Kesling. He is very helpful and there to help explain the material. He has office hours but doesn't mind you walking in and asking questions. Will stop what he's doing to help you. He is thorough and gives good feedback. He talks TO you and not AT you. Strongly recommend him.
Took Kesling for Summer 2017 Org 1 and 2. Made a B in 1 and a D in two. Read thoroughly and did pracitce problems daily. Do not take over the summer!!!!! 4 of my friends also got D's. He just told stories the whole time that were loosely based around the material. I would rather have had him come in and just read the ppts (Which he did sometimes)
Took him over the summer for Orgo I & Orgo II. Very thorough and helpful. Attend SI to enhance understanding the material if you don't understand it in class. Does not talk down to you. Fair and just professor. Your grade reflects the work you put into his class. Course can be challenging to non-Chem majors.
Kesling is an amazing teacher with a lot of heart. He is known for giving hard tests that really determine if you know the information. They are difficult, but very fair and really allow you to show you are ready for the next level. He is has a dry sense of humor that is hilarious and goes into depth on several difficult concepts. Would recommend.
Dr. Kesling is truly the most caring professor Ive had. Do not listen to everyone who hates him, they simply didnt want to put in the work. If you read the chapters, study the in class worksheets, and do your homework you can make an A. He will always help no matter what, but you have to put forth the effort. Definitely the best chem professor.
Read the chapter assigned before class. Be prepared to answer questions. I've never had a professor give so much of their off time for study sessions. Utilize his office hours. He is very approachable and is happy to explain things in a simple manner.
The oral questions are not that bad, and while he does give more homework than other chem profs, it makes it easier to receive an A. While his sense of humor is not for everyone, he truly cares about his students. I had him for both lecture&lab and plan to take him for 113. Read your book, ask questions, do the hw and STUDY and you'll be fine! *
This man is such a dad. However, if you don't want to put in the time for reading the textbook, doing the online hw, and studying for the tests, you won't have a good time. He has an incredible understanding of the material he's teaching, so if you're confused, just ask; that's all you have to do. As far as attendance, it's best to show up to class
He does ALOT of oral questions where he calls students randomly and you have to stand up and answer 3 questions. Homework ranges from 40 to 70 questions, about once to twice a week. If you dont read the textbook you WILL fail. He doesnt lecture unless you ask him questions, which I recommend bc then theres no time for oral questions.
Dr. Kesling is a very fair professor. Organic chemistry is a tough class but he presented the material in a helpful way. He really helped me build my knowledge of chemistry. Make sure that you are willing to do the practice problems outside of the homework, read the textbook, and take his advice about model kits.
Be prepared to teach yourself Chem 111. He does not lecture, he does not explain how anything works, anhe expects you to come to class already knowing and understand all material. Class time is completely taken up by him doing equations on the screen with no explanation. I dread going to his class everyday and not because chemistry is hard for me.
In my opinion, this class was basically "teach yourself" and if you don't understand the 70 pages you have to read every weekend then you're on your own.
Dr. Kesling has been an amazing professor. I've had him for chem111 and chem113. While his class is challenging, you will actually learn the material. If you don't enjoy reading a textbook, don't take his class. Instead of lecturing he does example problems on the board and takes questions. He is willing to help if you are putting the effort in.
LOTS of mastering chem hw. Took me about 7 hrs to complete each of the chapters labelled "3+ hours" in mastering. It's for your own good though. Tests have bonus questions and are easier than mastering. Multiple extra credit opportunities. You have to teach yourself from the textbook; he doesn't lecture. He does practice problems and will answer ?s
Be ready to read and spend 15+ hours a week on homework.
If you want to take a class where you actually learn the material, and you don't want to be bored to death in lectures, take Kesling. Kesling is an amazing professor and actually has a sense of humor. And yes, he actually does teach... take notes when doing the worksheets and go to his office hours. Tests are difficult, but you get practice exams.
My BOIIIIIIIIIII. I absolutely luv Dr. Kesling. He is the most helpful professor I have ever had outside of class and truly wants you to do well. Lots of people complain about his homework, but honestly if you read the book and go to his office for the problems you can't figure out, it takes a normal amount of time. Super nice and funny, I'll miss.
I never had this professor for lecture, but I did have him for lab last semester. I find Dr. Kesling to be very funny, but funny in a way that takes his jokes too far. If you are anything but a total republican, don't take him. He is very insensitive to those of a different race or sexuality. I never felt comfortable.
Dr. Kesling is one of the great ones! I also had him for physics lab, and he has helped me with all of my chemistry classes and given me a lot of really good advice that has been integral to my academic success. He is as passionate about helping his students as anyone at Campbell, but you have to put in the work! Also just an all-around good guy.
Amazing Professor! If you have any questions go to his office hours and he is super helpful!
Kesling is a great person. The way he taught I could not learn from which is why it was so hard for me. He wants you to read the book and know concepts before coming to class. I have a comprehension problem which is why it did not work out. He is very caring if you put forth the effort.
He is an amazing person who makes a lot of jokes; however, you HAVE to read the textbook to pass. To ensure that you're reading, he will randomly select people to answer questions about the textbook. If you do not understand the content, go to his office hours and post questions in the discussion forms he posts. Put the effort in and you'll pass.
Dr. Kesling is a great Chemistry instructor!! If you are taking his online class, you will be required to watch his prerecorded lectures in order to know what to post in the discussion forum. You will have a lab almost every week and you have to purchase the supplies. You also have "mastering chemistry" homework every week but it's not a lot.
Be prepared to want to off yourself from this professors insane work load. He goes in teaching expecting you to already know everything about chemistry, and expects you to have an entire chapter memorized + 60 questions of homework done every week. He fails to realize piling insane amounts of work all at once won't help your students learn.
Between the amount of work you receive in this class, Dr. Keslings attitude towards teaching, and the overall structure of his class all sucks. I really can't say much about him other than it's almost like he enjoys watching his entire class crash and burn. No matter how much time you spend (waste) dealing with his class, it's never enough.
it's impossible to keep up in this class. He expects you to already know everything about chemistry and hates it when his students don't understand. the work load is outrageous, and he's too pompous to ever reconsider his teaching ability
Dr Kesling is definitely one of the harder professors out there. I often find myself going to other chemistry professors/advisors instead because he intimidates you into not asking questions and has zero empathy for everyone around him. I'm definitely going to have to take chemistry again but I will sure be going to someone else.. he is awful.
This class has affected me so much on such a huge level. I've sacrificed the grades in my other classes just to be able to do the homework, and now I'm not only failing professor Keslings class due to it being literally impossible, but now i'm failing my other classes because I've devoted my life to a chemistry class
Just take any other chemistry professor if you actually care about learning, not having to teach yourself, and actually want to succeed.
I had him for chem 1 and 2. Worked full time, had 16 hours of classes, and made A's. He comes to class, quizzes students on definitions from the chapter, answers any questions the class has, and goes over homework problems on worksheets. Everything was organized and clearly laid out. Straightforward class that anyone who puts in effort can pass.
With the way laboratories are set up it's often difficult to keep track with whats even happening. Lab will be going over one subject, while Professor Kesling has already slingshot forward to another section. I struggle with chemistry already, and the way his class is set up is too faced paced, it's very difficult to keep up.
I loved taking chem 1, and did well in it. For some reason, i cannot see myself doing the same for 2. He teaches quick, and there is no time to actually sit with and understand vital concepts/ideas. As soon as you try to understand one concept, Kesling is already on the next one, and the one after. This class could've been so much simpler.
dr. kesling is an ok professor. He knows chemistry well, but I think lacks passion and determination to get his students learning. His lectures are great if you already understand chemistry. I have friends who are struggling pretty bad but all I can say is that he knows it well, you can learn from him. However, I agree that his class is too fast
Studying for his class feels like a nightmare. There's just too much information he wants you to cram into such a short time frame. From the very start his class was full throttle, to where even missing one day, or not understanding something right away... you're screwed. I can't even begin to express how much his class set me back.
I made A's in both gen chems with him. It was like 10 chapters in 15 weeks with basic math and word problems. Honestly, if you can't pass general chemistry with that pace you may not be cut out for science, or college. Everyone in our class that did bad spent all their time complaining instead of studying. I think the lowest grade was a D.
Horrendous professor. He likes to think he does everything for his students when he can't even post the resources we've done in class. He gives you almost no guidance when studying 5 chapters of chemistry and expects you to already know everything going in.
I spent days studying for I don't even know what because It's so hard to articulate every concept he's looking for. Let alone he thinks chemistry is just common sense, which is hysterical. Professor Kesling is a washed up professor with almost barely any motive to teach properly
Kesling is definitely on a high horse when teaching. I don't really understand where he gets that from, but expect to re-learn chemistry yourself, and when you ask questions expect to be made fun of. I don't know how this guy can call himself a professor.
What a disaster. Kesling somehow manages to "teach" chemistry is such a way where it's impossible to keep up, assumes you already know everything about chemistry. and has the audacity to wonder why people are struggling. I've never taken a class "taught" by a professor this bad before. Never taking this class again
dealing with this class is just awful. i have to spend all my time wasted on trying to understand chemistry all for it to lead nowhere. his class is unpredictable, and very intimidating. very difficult to keep up let alone understand whats happening. though he wants you to ask questions so he can make fun of you for it.
If you have a job or value your success in other classes, this one is not for you. I don't care what anyone says, or whatever excuse Professor Kesling likes to voice, this class is impossible. You literally cannot justify the work load of this class, and his exams are a total nightmare. I passed chem 1, and im passing chem 2 lab. but this guy....
studied for weeks just for it to get me absolutely nowhere. screw this class.
I usually really enjoy chemistry but he will destroy that. This class is very daunting, extremely fast paced, and Keslings attitude towards teaching and his students is just not right. I can't express enough how vital it is to take a different professor, especially if you like passing.
Dr. Kesling is so awesome. I hate seeing these poor reviews of him. He is extremely helpful to whoever puts in effort but if you don't care, like whoever is writing these reviews, it's no surprise that you're not doing well. He is a great guy and I feel sorry for you that can't put in effort to do well. I took both of his classes and did well.
I knew this guy would be a problem the day we walked in. Professor Kesling has his head so far in the sand that his students end up paying the price. You will have to teach yourself anyway, and his overall behavior is unacceptable. Never seen a professor like this before. You will succeed just fine, and maybe even pass with any other professor.
Felt really hopeless the entire time. And I never understood half the things he was “teaching”. He will degrade your inspiration for chemistry and explains that very few will pass on day one.
I'm in his class at App now. He asks us to read before coming to class, answers any questions in class, and basically does our homework for us in class. I studied some for the first test and got a B, I have no idea why some people are struggling with this course. My friends in other sections have covered the same amount of material that we have.
really difficult to balance this class with anything else. and even more difficult to keep up. brian doesn't seem to like his job very much just based on how he presents himself. his tangents in class are also not helpful when trying to comprehend chemistry
I made a D on the first test, but he lets us rework our wrong answers for partial credit and I ended up with a B. He also gave me some great study tips! He makes it easy to do well!
just the act of passing this class is hard itself, actually being able to keep up and understand what Kesling teaches is another animal. I spent the entire semester just barley being able to keep up whilst spending ALL of my time doing chemistry and dealing with his insane workload. I failed some other classes just to pass his, yet retained nothing
Overall horrible experience. I've never taken a class this difficult before, and "professor" Kesling being the first one to present that to you is extremely unsettling. He doesn't care much about you or what you go through, he want's you to spend every waking hour of your life doing chemistry. That's his only goal. He sucks at actually teaching
