Kinkle is great. He makes you work hard and teaches you how to teach yourself. Do the outcomes and he does have PRS so come to class. Bioportal ends up being a pain, and his exam questions can be worded poorly but overall he is enthusiastic and extremely helpful. No curve, but if you work hard, he will be fair with grading.
He's relatively good at teaching compared to some other science professors. His test questions are sometimes worded in annoying ways, but overall, he gets you to learn the material rather than you just going through the motions. Would recommend.
This professor does not teach, but just gives you questions and makes you teach yourself and your classmates. I would NOT recommend this professor!
An excellent professor. He encourages group learning, but ultimately he covers everything himself too. He doesn't really tolerate goofing off, though. As long as you show up, find a few friends to discuss the material with, and pay attention, you'll get at least a C. Reading and doing his suggested activities only help more.
Dr. Kinkle is hands-down the best biology professor I have had! He's always available for help and support. He also expects college students to do college level work. He does expect group learning, and hates competition in the classroom. Read the book, do the outcomes, and study PRS and you'll be fine!
Worst prof I've ever had. He doesn't realize how terrible group work is and how little students actually learn. He seems to be intolerant of anyting that isn't his idea, though he'll smile and nod as you're talking. Avoid at all costs.
Exams are not easy at all. If you ask him for help he will ask you theq uestions rather than answering them at all. No textbook which is worse bc i am not that good at listening to the lectures.
His classes are pretty much self-taught. He also tends to have a really big ego and will find any reason to be mean, even if your reason for doing whatever it is isn't your fault - such as you arriving 5 minutes late to a test because the city didn't salt the streets (when you never normally are late)! Avoid him at all costs.
This class was AMAZING! I don't even know my over-all grade in the course yet, but I would reccommend him to anyone who needs a natural science course and doesn't want to buy a book. He's FUNNY and you have the opportunity to learn what you want to learn! Work for the grade and you'll get the grade!
Excellent professor. A lot of people complain about his class but it's really just a matter of putting in the effort to prepare for class. If you want to slack and get an easy A, don't take him but if you really want to learn the material (and if you want to be a doctor/pharmacist I certainly hope you do) I would highly recommend his class.
All his outside class work makes you learn & prepare for class but his test are way too hard and his personality kind of sucks. He tends to be rude to his student and degrading. He once yelled at a kid with tourettes for looking around too much during a quiz. Yeah he's that kind of guy. I learn alot but still ended with a C because of his exams.
Dr. Kinkle is extremely knowledgeable and very approachable. His teaching style is refreshing and he really cares about his students and learning the material. He's a stickler for texting and playing on the computer so if you don't want to listen and engage in class then this guy isn't for you. The work load is heavy, but it helps to understand.
If you don't really like or care about biology, do not take his class. However, if you enjoy biology, he is great
Excellent prof, one of the top ones at the University.
As long as you do the learning outcomes and use the online resources he gives you to study for his exams, you'll do fine. Go to class to ensure that you get the PRS points, it helps boost your grade!
Not helpful and not clear. Exam questions really did not pertain to notes given. Definitely do not recommend.
Keeps the class room very focused. He speaks clearly and answers all of his own learning objectives. I may not learn everything from him I need, but what I do I understand. There are spaces missing though.
Loves public humiliation. Never will really answer your questions directly. He will ask questions then call on students to give the answer, half the time you can't hear the student so you don't know the answer. he doesn't understand that some students don't understand the material from reading the book. He assumes if you read then you understand it
You mainly teach yourself in this class. He rarely directly answers questions instead just follows it with another. He assumes you can master the material by doing the learning outcomes. I put in a lot of effort in this class but had a very difficult time in this class and passed b/c of S.I tutoring sessions. Would not take his class again ever.
Dr. Kinkle tells you exactly what you need to know, assigns pre-class assignments, group assignments and clicker questions to engage students in the material and challenge them. The tests are easier than the clicker questions, group assignments and the pca's and if you can do them you can get an a in the class easily.
For those who complain about "teaching yourself," Dr. Kinkle uses an "active learning" concept where you read the textbook and complete questions before class that will be discussed by him and your group during class time. This method greatly helps you learn, and I loved coming here every day. Basically, do you work and you'll be fine, great Prof!
You had to teach yourself, he rarely answered any questions; he usually just answered them with more questions. He thoroughly enjoys calling students out that don't seem to know the answer. Read the textbook, do the learning outcomes, do the PCA's and above all remember he is a professor, not a teacher so don't expect to be taught anything.
If you do your learning outcomes, come to class, and actually try with a fair amount of effort this class will be easy and you will actually learn. Kinkle is a great teacher if you put in the work. I only with the Chemistry department used his technique.
Sure you might have to do learning outcomes (homework) and have quizzes before every class but with the teachers you have to choose from he is the best. You might not like it in the beginning but just let it fall into place and you like it. When he says draw everything out i'd listen to him, this is the best advice ever received in a bio c
He's a good professor if you pay attention and do all the work! His tests are previous questions that he has already asked either in class such as on power points and on tests of the year or two before. Make sure you do your learning outcomes clicker questions and pre class. Otherwise he's an alright professor.
Not an easy class by any means, but I learned so much from it. I have had him for 2 quarters now and made sure i signed up for his bio 103 class. I think he is an amazing teacher. By far both my favorite professor and favorite class.
He's a good professor. His methods are weird at first, but they really do help. Go to class, do any homework, and read the book. All of it helps. It's a hard class, but if you pay attention and get the material quickly, you should be fine. Ask him about research and internship opportunities too. He wants students to take advantage of that.
I had Kinkle for all of my Biology courses Freshman year. He likes you to be in class and remembers faces. His class is very interactive with clicker questions, group discussion and answering questions. He does call you out in class and his tests are hard (he gives you all right answer and you have to pick the MOST RIGHT), but the class helps a lot
Took professor Kinkle for the entire biology sequence. He tells students what he expects of them, and if you do the assigned work and study at all before exams you will you well. I highly recommend Kinkle.
A great professor. His method of teaching keeps you engaged and being in groups help for a thorough understanding.
The Fresh. Bio sequence taught by Dr. Kinkle is very easy. ANYONE can get straight A's. Here is the formula: Go to class to get the clicker and group points. Google the easy PCAs. Finally, the exam questions come from old exams. There are many sources to get these old questions. Friends, LC leaders, etc. Find them. Memorize. Succeed. Trust me.
He obviously knows a lot about biology, but tries teaching methods that don't work well in a large classroom setting. I know about good teaching methods because I'm majoring in education. He expects the students to teach themselves and does very little to help. He also does very little to help prepare his students for the exams. Not recommended!
I love the way Kinkle teaches, he has everyones best interest in mind and uses ways in order to keep information in your head. If you dont do well in this class it's because you didnt put enough effort. He's a fantastic teacher I recommend him to everyone. All of his exams are learning outcomes and PRS questions.
easy to know what to study for exams and the homework is easy as well. If you study and do the clicker questions in class you will be fine. He's not so helpful when you ask questions though.
Kinkle is a wonderful professor, but don't think for one second he won't make you work for your grade. He pushes your knowledge beyond what you read for homework. Involvement is crucial and you must go to class. He walks around with a microphone and puts you on the spot to answer questions. Needless to say, he gives me anxiety :). I DO RECOMMEND!!
He makes you read the book and definitely read it because you'll be lost without it. He doesn't really explain things in class, he will clarify some things though. He is more on the higher thinking.
Great professor, makes biology super interesting. Keeps the class interacted. Highly recommended
He knows what he's talking about and is always willing to answer any questions you have, I definitely learned something from him. He's a good professor, but that class is very demanding.
He likes to use the group method of learning, which keeps you involved. Lots of case studies to show that current research relate to the seemingly esoteric topics we review with the book. Very fair with grades; exams came either from PRS response questions or even student submitted questions. Makes his expectations very clear, but's fair.
I am sure he is a great person but I think his teaching style is terrible. I am all for doing homework and research for a class but what I am not for is going to class and teaching myself and my group. He talks about studies that show students learn better by his teaching style. I think it is really lack there of teaching.
He WILL kick you out of class. Do not text or cheat on PRS questions. He doesn't teach much so you have to read the book. He teaches in a way that he believes is best but really it doesn't help at all. He is obsessed with making you draw pictures. Hardest freshman biology teacher. Tests are much harder than the other teachers.
He's sassy and demanding but he'll certainly make sure you either learn something by the end of it or change majors.
He's terrible. He uses the "group" method of teaching, although he thinks it works, it does not. He seems nice enough in class but if you meet with him privately, not so much. All in all, he made me hate biology.
Although I appreciate the fact that he does not teach by just reading off a powerpoint pres., I've got to say that his preferred method does not do squat for me. He's unhelpful if you have questions, and he'll kind of be as condescending as possible if you ask a question. He's pretty much turned a subject I loved into a subject I really dislike.
Kinkle knows what he's talking about. He's not an instructor that's going to hold your hand and sugar coat everything. You have to do the work. The secret to the group work is getting to know who you work with and call them out if they're not contributing. He's tough, but was helpful when I had questions or concerns. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Dr. Kinkle is a great professor. I highly recommend taking his classes! He definitely makes you work for your grade, but if you participate in class, read the book, and do your homework, you'll be fine. He is extremely helpful and concerned about student learning. He is always available to help students.
I highly recommend Dr. Kinkle's class. He is always willing to meet with you for any reason! 100 percent committed to his students.. Some say his method of teaching doesn't work for them, but most likely these students aren't doing the reading and coming to class prepared
He is an absolutely terrible teacher. He thinks the best method of teaching is talking for a minute and then having you talk in groups about something. He won't answer questions or try to help you. His form of answering a question is too ask you another question or tell you to look it up. Recommend not taking unless you have to.
Dr. Kinkle gets negative reviews on his teaching style, but I honestly pay the most attention in his class. He seems hard, but he's funny and always willing to meet with students to help! Definitely do the learning outcomes and review old tests/PRS!
Does nothing to help prepare students for exams, even though he claims to. He also can't answer many questions, including his own. He's a smart guy but not a good teacher. He basically makes you teach yourself and he insists it's the best way to learn, even though it's not. I wouldn't suggest taking him unless you absolutely have to.
Kinkle is so awesome! If you don't like Kinkle or his teaching style it is probably because you don't do your learning outcomes or what he tells you to know. If you meet with Kinkle after a test he will probably ask you to draw something or ask you questions . Dont be discouraged if you cant. Kinkle will meet with anyone anytime. He is so dedicated
You will learn a lot from this class with kinkle but it will not be easy. You will have to read multi chapters every night and take difficult exams
Had Kinkle for BIO 101-103. Nice guy but his method of teaching sucked. I hardly learned anything from actually attending class but rather from reading every word of the chapters we covered. His finals are awful, ten times harder than his lecture exams.
His method is often shunned by students. However, as I prep for the MCAT, I remember everything about the nephron, heart, pyruvate oxidation, Krebs Cycle, Citric Acid cycle, the list goes on. What I'm saying is although YOU as a student have to put forth effort, it's worth it in the end. There's a method to Kinkle's madness and frankly, it works.
Very hard teacher! you have to read multiple chapters each night and memorize everything you read. In class, we spend 80% of the time in groups, but if no one in your group knows the answer, you're kind of screwed because he doesn't clarify.
The class depends entirely on you and your group members you don't actually learn anything from Kinkle.
Great class. It is only difficult if you don't put forward the effort. Do not expect this class to be easy. You absolutely cannot slack off and blow off homework and learning outcomes, or your grade will suffer. A note for pre-health students: remember, this is freshman biology. If you can't stand freshman bio, imagine med/dent/vet/grad classes.
Terrible terrible teacher. If your grades are struggling and you go to him for help, he just makes you feel dumb and explains nothing. I recommend Dr. Beyette instead
Good professor, make sure you keep up with his assignments to do well in the course. He likes to put everyone in groups during the lecture and doesn't really do a good job explaining the questions he asks, instead making groups discuss it amongst themselves.
Hard, unclear and tests are all trick questions and doesn't help when you meet with him
Dr. Kinkle officially became the worst professor of my entire 5 years of post-secondary education. He actually became the first professor I've ever complained about. He thinks he has a very efficient teaching style, but he just doesn't understand that's not the reality.
Lectures are absolutely useless.
You have to put in a lot of work to get a god grade in his class. Pay attention in lecture and take notes and do the reading assignments before class. Test are always tricky so study the material in detail
I was initially intimidated by Dr. Kinkle, so I was a little scared to ask for help at the beginning. After a bad first exam score though, I sought help, and it was extremely helpful. Dr. Kinkle said I could pop by his office anytime I needed help with a concept. If you are willing to put the work in, he is willing to help you out with anything.
Dr. Kinkle is the worst professor I've ever had.
I would not recoment any student to take this class with Kinkle. Unless you can not take another professor for biology take him.. I could not stand him and could not wait for the semester to be over. I am glad I do not have to take this class again and take him. THANK GOD!!
Dr. Kinkle is great. He is tough but gives you everything you need to pass. If you do the learning outcomes and come prepared you should have no problems. Participation isn't mandatory but it might as well be because theres a PRS quiz at the beginning and end of class. I definitely recommend him.
Kinkle is a good natured guy and enjoys his job and biology in general. However, his powerpoints and lectures are unorthodox, and it is hard to take good notes. Every is pretty much discussion based. He loves diagrams on exams. The exams are fair, and it is hard to get below a C on an exam. Read the textbook and take the PRS questions seriously.
Kinkle is a great professor and i recommend him to anyone. He is the best out of all of the biology teachers. He makes you work, and you have put in the effort too to get that good grade. He is willing to work with you, but only if you show effort. Excellent teaching methods! I loved him, and its not hard to pass his class.
Awesome dude ! he's funny and even teaches us stuff out of the book !! he's awesome ! He helps a lot by providing extra links when it comes to pre professional schools ! He has sent me loads of links for pre med and pre dental school prep and research !
Kinkle is your best bet for first level biology. He is strict, yes, but he is also friendly and not condescending towards students. He likes to stand in the back of lectures of other professors he knows, so don't be too terrified if you turn around in Chemistry and he is standing directly behind you. Lectures are right to the point.
Most condescending teacher, I've ever taken. I don't enjoy the "flipped" classroom. Why am I paying money to learn everything myself and prove it everyday. If you have a job, don't even try to take this course. Yeah, I really don't like him. Oh and now I'm about to graduate with a B.S. in Environmental Sciences.
Lecture is really helpful.
Dr. Kinkle is a fantastic professor. The active learning environment in his classroom is awesome. He is an intelligent, humorous, dedicated professor who will do whatever it takes to help you succeed if you reach out to him. His class is hard, but you learn a ton. He really cares about his students. Definitely take his class if you can.
He's a very good teacher who is interested in his students success. If you're willing to work for it, he's willing to help. I enjoyed his teaching style. He made large lecture classes feel small.
If you genuinely like learning about most of the topics covered in the class, you are motivated to succeed, and willing to put in the work, then you will definitely like Dr. Kinkle. Besides being a good biology teacher, he also provides students with general advice to succeed as a student. Would definitely recommend him.
Dr. Kinkle is a good professor, although sometimes he goes into too much detail about things we are not required to know. As long as you do your assignments and participate in class, it is hard to do poorly. His exams coincide with the homework assignments. Attendance is mandatory, however!
Loves his job and is really involved in student learning. He wants you to do well, something many other professors lack. He keeps lectures interesting with group participation making you get out of your comfort zone and talk to your peers. Love his class!
Great Professor! I had him for Biological Anthropology and Quantitative Anthropology. He's super helpful and honestly wants the student to learn and succeed. He's really funny and lectures are not mandatory but are very interesting.
He's a rude professor. Very sarcastic and hard to understand. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
Not helpful at all. After asking him for help, he just walked away and told me to ask my group. Doesn't explain things very well either.
Dr. Kinkle's class is easy if you do your learning outcomes. I think the people who don't like his class aren't working as hard as they should be. His lectures are interesting and he's a nice guy. I would definitely suggest going to SI. It's really helpful and cuts studying time in half. He expects a lot, but if you work hard it's a great clas
Dr. Kinkle is my favorite professor! Though his engaging teaching style is something to get used to, he is very helpful and very passionate about Biology. You have pre&post class quizzes and he gives pop quizzes on drawing concepts that we are going over in class (ex Krebs Cycle). Just make sure you do your learning outcomes and you will be fine.
DON'T TAKE HIM! Take Dr. Mosley if you can! Dr. Kinkle is a cool guy but if you're looking to get an A in biology, Mosley is the way to go. Kinkle doesnt curve tests, has confusing test questions, and is often very cynical if you ask questions at all. I've taken both and can tell you that you'll get a better grade with half the work taking Mosley.
Super helpful guy, class may be hard if you don't enjoy biology. He expects you to do most of your learning outside of class & then apply the knowledge in class via pop quizzes, figure drawings & pre & post clicker questions. He has very clear expectations though & is a very approachable person if you have a question. Pay attention to his lectures!
Super helpful if you go to him, not as scary once you know him. Class requires reading and doing learning outcomes for every class, and loads of studying. The class isn't easy, but it is well rewarding to do well in this class. Exams are tough, but very fair compared to the topics covered, must know how to do drawings.
He really tries to get you to buy into his philosophy, and I have to say, it's effective. In my other classes the teachers will just lecture at you and give tests, but his class forces you to do the work on your own and come to class ready to show what you know. The tests are easy as long as you keep up with the learning outcomes.
At first a very intimidating man, expects a lot out of students. Don't get caught with phones or email on laptop or he will kick you out of class in no time. Good class structure, just have to put in the work.
He handles the seemingly impossible 300+ person lecture class in an amazing way. However, you have to do all the work yourself. You teach yourself the material and he kind of just supports what you study for before class. Two quizzes per day and group questions. Puts you in groups which doesn't help at all. Walks around auditorium which is cool.
Dr Kinkle is the best professor at uc. he comes off a little arrogant but he really does do his research and makes a huge effort to teach in the best way possible. There is a lot of work but if you read do learning outcomes and are willing to work you will be eternally grateful for the understanding you gain
Quizzes you more than you ever thought possible (Mastering bio, pre-class quiz, post-class quiz, pop-drawings, daily group question(s), and ungraded clicker questions) but you will learn. And he will spend the first week showing you all the research to prove it. Kind of intimidating, but funny & friendly. Do the learning outcomes! NO CELL PHONES.
Very nice outside of class. Intimidating in class and don't be caught with your cell phone in sight, you'll be kicked out. Homework due before each lecture. 4 exams and a final. If you have an exam average of 93 you are exempt from the final. He has you answer your own questions. TA's do most of the helping. Pop quizzes over structure drawings.
He puts a lot of effort into the structure of his class, and you will succeed if you put in comparable effort on your end of things. It is a work-intensive class, but Prof. Kinkle gives you a ton of resources to make it doable.
Dr. Kinkle's class can be tough but he is always available to support you in the class. Read the assigned material, do the learning outcomes and participate in class. It can be a very excited class when you understand everything and can start to challenge your knowledge. I highly recommend Dr. Kinkle!
Dr. Kinkle sincerely cares about the learning of his students. He is very dedicated to his teaching and will research teaching methods to help his students learn better. The class isn't the easiest, and it isn't possible to learn everything by simply showing up. You will need to study independently; however, Kinkle will provide you with good tools
First time freshman who are not serious about school may find him tough but if you actually need biology he is a very good teacher who a clear and memorable understanding of it. He goes out of his way to give you resources into the field and really loves what he teaches.
I had him for Bio1080 and he subbed basically the whole semester for my 1081 class. He gave plenty of study material for the exams and explained things clearly in class. He was genuinely helpful during office hours and was happy to answer any questions. If you study and know the content he's a really cool guy and class with him is enjoyable.
Professor Kinkle's class can be hard if you do not actively participate during lecture or read the textbook. Overall he is a great professor and genuinely cares about his students. He does come off as scary and mean but once you get to know him he's a great guy.
Kinkle is wonderful, his learning outcomes really make the class easy because as you all may know, Biology is not easy.
he is very rude. he does care about his students but doesn't take crap from people. Don't ever get caught talking, having your cell phone out, or on your lap top or you'll be kicked out! Beware if you decide to take him.
Brian Kinkle is a very nice, respected professor. However, the way he teaches isn't for everyone. It's a class you just have to push through to get to the better stuff. Oh, and if you oversleep the first few mins. of class, expect your grade to drop because he starts on time and always starts out with a quiz. Get help from the LA's too.
Teaches as if you already know all course material. Very difficult.
To pass bio1081 YOU HAVE to do your LO's, come to each class, and understand the material before lecture. A five question quiz will be at the beginning and end of each class which eventually adds up to 10% of your grade. Overall good professor and always wants you to succeed.
He is a very hard grader and is not open to listening to others opinions. It is his way or the highway. He doesn't care about how his students feel about his active learning method and if you schedule a meeting with him he will just tell you that you aren't trying hard enough or you aren't studying enough.
Not good at explaining things in detail, and if you ever go to his office hours and you don't have an A make sure you are prepared to get yelled at. His lectures aren't that helpful and his teaching is NOT the best. Always do your learning outcomes, and NEVER be late. I dread his class every day I have it.
Make sure you do your learning outcomes before class and prepare heavily. DRAW EVERYTHING. If you know how to draw the topics, then you'll understand the concepts.
Tough class, especially if you don't do your LO's. Kinkle really makes you work for your grade, but I've learned more than I have ever before in this class. I don't dread class it is almost kinda fun. I recommend Kinkle, he is a genius and his class is one to remember.
So basically you work in groups of five. Every night you read the section and answer about five questions from the reading. You come to class and discuss it with your group. You take a pre quiz and a post quiz during every class meeting. Make sure you do your learning outcomes or it will be very hard to pass. He really cares about his students.
He's a good professor in general, always starts his class with quizzes and they're always on time. He will kick you out if you have your phone out or if you're playing video games in class. He is a tough grader and asks tricky questions so make sure to do your LOs.
He is an awesome dude. If you do your work, class isn't too bad, and actually kind of fun working in groups and answering PRS questions. Just make sure to do your LOs and draw everything he asks. He isnt as scary as he seems.
If you want an A in Biology, it is possible in Kinkle's class, but it comes with a lot of work. My biggest piece of advice would be do not fall behind and pay attention in lecture. 2 quizzes every day and occasional pop concept drawing quizzes (if you don't show up you get 0's). Exams are very do-able as long as you truly understand the topics.
Awesome teacher
Brian Kinkle is one of the best professors at UC. His lectures are very intriguing and informative. He runs a "flipped classroom" where you do most of the learning at home and discuss it in class. Brian Kinkle is a 10/10.
Does that flipped classroom thing, but the material is easy enough that it doesn't really matter how it is taught. Decent professor.
You must do your learning outcomes and be prepared for every class. There is a pre and post quiz every day to make sure you understand the material. He does a flipped classroom. It is a tough class at first but makes you stay on top of all your work. As long as you are well prepared for class, you will do fine in the course.
Brian Kinkle is a great professor that is greatly misunderstood. This generally stems from his 0 tolerance policy for anything other than biology while in class. He will immediately ask you to leave, causing fear from some of the less dedicated students. His reverse class style helps promote learning by actually making you work. Effort will get A's
After taking Dr. Kinkle's class my freshman year I left unappreciative of how much effort he puts into making sure you understand the material more than just the face value. often times in class Dr. Kinkle would ask "why does it do this" to get people engaged and think deeper about concepts. this is something you likely wont find elsewhere
The material isn't that difficult but he's terrible at giving explanations since he expects everyone to know the material prior to class. He makes you talk in groups every 5 minutes which doesn't help a whole lot when none of your group members understand the material. He's passive aggressive and has kicked students out for checking an email.
Quizzes everyday so you can't miss class. He genuinely wants you to learn. Pop quizzes every 1-2 weeks. He sometimes comes off as a jerk, but he's cool most of the time. Definitely possible to do well in the class if you put in the effort.
Dr. Kinkle requires attendance with his pre- and post- test quizzes. Skip those and you definitely won't pass his class. Bio 1082 dives into evolution, speciation, botany, and the different parts of the human/animal body. Judging from the curriculum, it is moderately difficult, but not impossible! Make sure you do your LO's and you should be fine!
Read the assigned sections before class because he does pre- and post- class quizzes every day. I didn't study much outside of the reading and I got an A. He WILL kick you out of class if you are on your phone, so don't do that.
He's there to guide you, not so much to teach you. It's sorta his way or the highway. His way probably is very effective if you have the capacity and motivation to come to class totally prepared every day. My least favorite part of the class was how often he said "get in your groups and discuss" which with a group like mine, accomplished little.
Dr. Kinkle is a professor who truly cares about his students and wants everyone to learn. Some people don't like him, because they are lazy. If you read before class, participate in class, and lightly review after class, it is not hard to pass. He is also willing to help you outside of class.
This class is not a class where you go to learn. You go to his class to take his quizzes and then your homework is to learn everything yourself. He sets his class up like this because its a "scientifically better" way to learn but if you aren't even close to used to it like me then you won't have a lot of fun in this class. Oh and clickers matters
I personally love how his class is set up. You pretty much read the textbook and take notes yourself, and you're quizzed on it each class. It pretty much forces you learn the material. There are plenty of SI sessions and he will respect you greatly if you come to his office hours for help. One of my favorite professors at UC!
Amazing guy. Makes you work for your grade. Bio is challenging but he sets up the class in a way that forces you to learn. Go to office hours but make sure you put in the effort before saying you don't understand something.
You have to be present to really be able to pass this class with him as the prof. He's a very straight to the point kind of man. Very respectable.
his classes is vary have i hate the days that i have his class he make boil very difficult and his way of teach is not effective he let you do ever thing in gorps his classes is just question and do not explain good
Hard class. Some people like him some people hate him. He is very strict and unforgiving. Overall not too bad.
I love Dr Kinkle, he's a super funny guy. He believes in doing a lot of group work in class, which can be hard to get used to if you don't like your group. He genuinely cares about helping students improve their grade in the class if they're not happy. He's a great teacher, and a really cool person to talk to! 10/10
One of my least favorite professors of all time. Extremely rude, not reasonable, and unresponsive to students. I would avoid him at all costs. He made my biology experience miserable.
I really enjoyed Dr. Kinkle's class! He has done a lot of research on the best ways to learn and he cares about the way students retain the information. Although there is a lot of preparation for each class, it really helps in the long run.
He expects a lot from his students. Not the best at explaining topics because he expects you to teach yourself. He does give out pop quizzes and everyday starts and ends with a quiz. It is a lot of work. He tends to kick people out of class and suspects many of cheating.
Super nice and incredibly funny. He'll joke around with you and laugh, but when it comes down to it he'll make you work hard. Quizzes every day, heavy on the reading, but overall very happy with this class!
I got a 3.6 my first semester DESPITE his class. Crazy tests. Not much help going to see him. Don't want to take another class of his!
The first time you take him, you will probably hate him. He makes you work for your success. I took him for Biology 1 and 2. In Bio1 I thought he was unnecessarily difficult but then in Bio2 I loved him and realized how great of a teacher he is. He is genuinely passionate about the topics he teaches and I would highly recommend him.
i literally changed majors because of brian kindle.
As so many already said, you will have to work in this class. He assigns students in groups of 5 and makes them actually work and learn from/teach each other. Being in groups is awkward, but it usually gets better. One downside: he's a zealous SJW. Expect various comments on that in class/Bb announcements.
Dr. Kinkle is an awesome guy, but his teaching style is not really teaching. I was home educated and did basic biology when I was 13 and I took a gap year after graduating high school so I could work full-time. I came to his bio class knowing SO little and he barely explains anything. I went to his office hours and he just told me to draw more...
If you don't read even one chapter or miss a class you won't be successful. You will be put into a group and you and your group teach each other with his guided questions. My group, however, didn't know what was going on so it was hard to keep up. I appreciate this is an effective method but EVEN SOME lecture would have been nice.
He will require you to read every night, which can be a lot of work some days. He has quizzes everyday and requires you to work in groups. Sometimes, things can be difficult but his classes were always very engaging. If you work hard, you will do well in his class. Also, he comes across as intimidating, but he's actually pretty nice.
If you are a freshman do NOT take this class with this professor. Dr. Kinkle is extremely tough. Also, in his office hours he will ask you a question and if you get it wrong he might kick you out and tell you to study more. If you want to start your college career successfully, then take another professors class.
I took Biology 1 and 2 my freshman year and I hated Dr. Kinkle most of the time but he really prepared me for the rest of the courses I needed to take as a Biology major. Make sure you always come to class prepared and READ THE BOOK(every detail). Sometimes he likes to throw in random details from the book onto tests so look out for that!!
If you are going into medicine Dr. Kinkle is the best professor to prepare you for the future. Yes, you have to read a lot. Yes, his course does require you to work hard, but if you think his course requires too much effort medicine is NOT FOR YOU. If you want to be handed an A don't take this course.
Dr. Kinkle is a very intelligent person and knows what he's talking about. While his courses were very tough, looking back I'm thankful that I had the opportunity to take them because I learned a lot. It forced me to work hard. Make sure you always bring your clicker to class and actually do the L.O.'s assigned, or else you will probably struggle.
Dr Kinkle is an amazing professor, He is one of the few professors that actually cares about the learning of students(believe having a professor who doesn't care sucks) . He really wants you to do well in the class, you just have to put in the actual work. You do learn a lot biology in his class.
I personally think Kinkle's class is a necessary entry way into college as a freshman. He shows you what college and medical school will ACTUALLY be like. His class is the class where I have retained the most information, and I am a junior now. His class is hard, and if you're not willing to put in the work, then maybe medicine isn't right for you.
You have to do his DIFFICULT learning outcomes before you come to class to understand how to do his very confusing PRS clicker questions (which he takes for a grade). He doesn't really explained what you should go over exactly for exams, and his exams are very difficult too. Don't go to his office hours if you don't know anything...
honestly the hardest class i have ever taken i did all the homework studied every single day and still didn't do well. Also have fun paying money to teach yourself everything, professor kinkle doesn't teach he just gives tests. do yourself a favor and take anyone else.
He's literally the reason I changed my major. His lectures are not helpful at all, and if I could skip the class and just read the textbook and watch bozemanscience, I would, but you have quizzes everyday at the start and end of class. However, he prepares you well, and if you don't want to do the work for his class, medicine is NOT for you.
1. He's too smart for his own good. If you would like an example, look up "professor who studied the subject for 37 years" and watch the YouTube video 2. The second you think you've caught up, you're actually 10 steps behind 3. The wording of his questions makes no sense at all. You could know the info forwards/backwards and still do bad on exams
Dr. Kinkle makes you work for your grade but it's worth it. The way he teaches forces you to read the textbook if you want to succeed, which also forces you to learn the material. Yes, his class is hard, but it is definitely worth taking if you want to get the most out of a biology class.
Dr. Kinkle is the best professor I've had this semester. His teaching style is super efficient and helpful, just do the work and you will be good to go. He gives good feedback and is accessible outside of class if you need him. He tells you exactly what will be on the exam, so if you know the objectives you'll do well.
Dr. Kinkle was by far my favorite professor this semester. A lot of people think his class is super hard, but it really isn't. If you do the Learning Outcomes, pay attention, and study how he tells you to, you will get a good grade! He will kick you out in the middle of class if you're on your phone!! Also, all the in-class work is group work.
Dr. Kinkle is like the man who'd say everything on your face even if you'd feel bad. His techniques to studying, if followed, will give you an easy A. Always be prepared for the class: everyday pre and post quizzes, concept checks, group questions and what not. Participation matters. Never talk about extra credits/special consideration in class.
Student is placed into group of 4 students in which you are responsible for answering group questions. There are pre/post quizzes every day that are worth 5 points. It is important to understand the chapters in order to do well. There are occasional concept checks (5pts) in which you must draw upon previous information. Do all the work. Get an A.
He's simply amazing! Do as he says, and the A is yours.
Often quotes that 1/3 of those in the course drop his class... which I feel should be alarming to both him and his students. His teaching style would be effective if we went over more of the material in class but you pretty much teach the course to yourself. His class was the reason I changed majors (take course with another professor do better)
My first experience with a flipped classroom and he was really awesome. I don't think it would of been possible for me to learn the volume of content in the limited amount of time if it wasn't for him. I looked forward to his lectures every time.
This class was very hard. He doesn't explain questions when a majority of the class gets it wrong. We in to talk to him during office hours and he made me feel stupid for not knowing the material.
I am not one to write poor comments, but seriously do not take this class. The level of demand that he requires for his students is impossible and if you are not a good test taker you will not survive. I am a hardworking student and still struggled. The content is hard enough and the wording of the tests will constantly have you second guessing.
Dr. Kinkle's style of teaching will get you into medical school. I have learned so much in this class compared to what I learned in AP Biology. There are pre/post quizzes every day (not worth much). He makes you work for an A, but that's how it should be done.
Dr. Kinkle will make you work for your grade. He "weeds" out anyone that isn't a hard worker in the first few weeks. Make sure to do your L.O.'s
Dr. Kinkle's class while difficult, is really awesome. The amount of work you do preparing for class will show in your grades. He makes material interesting and is very passionate about biology.
You either love him or hate him. He gives a different approach on how he lectures. You really do a lot of learning outside his class. He gives you learning outcomes and this is your "cheat sheet" on what he expects you to know. Tests are fair, only hard if you don't study. Study every night and really understand the LO's in order to do well.
Not an easy A class. You have to read and remember everything , solve quizzes (pre-, group-, post-) in class, occasional concept checks and participate in discussions. Meet him regularly if you have problems (but NEVER go without having the knowledge of that topic). A pure Med-school experience. Follow what he says, you'd be good. HIGHLY RECOMMD.
Kinkle is a great guy. He comes off really intimidating, but is a really nice guy. He will make you work for the grade, but it is worth it. He really makes you learn the material. 10/10
I got a 95% in his class by not following any of his instructions. 90% of his LOs are useless. The 10% that is useful has the word "draw" because all his concept checks are from those LOs only. Only go to his office hours to learn those from him. Khan Academy will be your best friend in his class. Fist watch the videos, then read the book.
Difficult class with rigorous material, but Dr. Kinkle really cares about the success of students.
Teaches by a reverse class meaning you teach yourself and he just test you on the material. Doesnt really help at all
Kinkle is a good guy and this class is very good to prepare you for med school
Wasn't for me. I'm sure his class is successful for many people, but I work full time while also going to school full time and the demands he places on students are too much for my kind of schedule.
Brian Kinkle is the bane of my existence. He is a liar and doesn't actually care about students as much as he cares about stroking his own ego. He constantly fishes for compliments and brownie points for being "woke". He says that his methods are to facilitate learning, when really it's anything but. Also his "helpers" are 95% females... I see you.
Both the language and just the ideas themselves these discussions about the intricate details of which kind of biology is correct, and meanwhile in actual "lecture" bodily autonomy is prohibited. Theres no way that any of this could ever be employed outside of the academic setting because its just so detached from the reality of current being.
I have no qualms placing Brain Kinkle in the same category as Pol Pot and Mussolini. Regularly disrespects his students and violates their rights. You can tell that he doesn't season his turkey.
What do you call a Biology major who isn't smart enough to become a medical doctor? Kinkle.
Three 5 point quizzes per class, four exams not counting the final, and concept checks that can kill your grade. He does drop one exam and a bunch of quizzes and concept checks and definitely wants everyone to succeed. I dont know why I like him and his class so much, I think it might be stockholm syndrome
I enjoy his class, but it isn't a traditional lecture class, and he frequently criticizes the traditional lecture style. That being said, you need to know the material before coming to class to be successful. There are 3 quizzes a day and 1 concept check per week. To do well, you have to do the learning outcomes and read the sections before class.
Horrible teacher, don't take him. Doesn't teach at all and makes your feel stupid when you go in to ask for help.
While there is a lot of work outside of class and there are lots of quizzes every day, Kinkle's teaching style helps you actually retain the information. The class is a little challenging and textbook readings are required before every class period.
having or showing the weaknesses or diseases of old age, especially a loss of mental faculties.
Awful professor, grading scale is skewed to fail most students. This guy is a horrible image for UC.
Worst Class i ever took!!!!!! Dont take his class if you are not a genious in Biology. Its basically like taking a online class. If you want to pass you need to spend 3 hours a day!
The worst class I've ever taken. Took as a requirement and have invested my entire life into it. I spend at least 3 hrs every day teaching myself from the textbook. He doesn't teach at all. You read the sections beforehand, then get to class and spend 55 min being quizzed. Grade based 80% on exams, 20% on in-class quizzes.
Dr. Kinkle's Biology 1081 was the hardest class I've ever taken. I stand by most of Dr. Kinkle's morals and sometimes he's pretty funny, however sometimes he comes across pretty elitist. You have to do the learning outcomes everyday and there is a pre and post quiz everyday. He does not tolerate cheating and will not hesitate to kick you out.
Be prepared to pay $1000 to teach yourself a class. The material isnt that hard its just very in depth. Kinkle is not a good representation of the university
Eh. I did well in his class and at some points I did like him, but overall his teaching style is not for me. He gets mad at students for not being experts on the material before we cover it in class. He also doesn't understand that people have different learning styles and will shame you if you study any other way besides what he thinks is best.
Brian Kinkle was not a good professor. Do not take him switch to a different bio lecture. He quizzes you on stuff you have yet to learn about. Then makes you draw items from the book, and grades it but its never on the test. Then he constantly talks about how his teaching style is the best. How quizzes are the best way to learn. 3+ quizzes a day
Loved this class! Kinkle is so funny and really cares about his students. He is very intimidating, but if you go to his office hours, he will be sure to have you cracking up.
My dad died and the funeral was scheduled for the same day as one of Kinkle's exams. I went to tell him my situation, and he said he wouldn't allow me to retake the exam to attend my father's funeral due to the way the class was structured.
Always talks about the fact that he cares about student's tuition money... but doesn't actually teach you anything? Funny how that "works".
Great prof. Most people that struggle don't take his advice and instruction seriously. His class is easy to pass and do well in if you do so. He dumps a small pile of cheerios on your floor everyday. If you pick them up everyday, you're fine. If you let them pile. up, you're hurting your own learning and grade that is otherwise easy to obtain.
Kinkle really cares for his students. If you put in the effort to do the LO's before each class and draw everything you should know you will do good in his class.
He doesn't lecture, say it is fake learning. Expects us to communicate with our groups outside of class when in reality college freshman don't care and often are as confused as you Very pretentious attitude about his style of teaching, ignoring the fact people learn in a variety of ways. I should probably donate to crashcourse.
The class is set up as three quizzes for the entire 55 minutes. You have to basically learn everything on your own and he does not curve for any reason. Your grade will consist of the tests so do good on them... they are really hard. Extra help from learning commons doesn't really help since its all conceptual and you have to truly understand.
Dr. Kinkle was an incredibly hard professor. The class is very much dependent on what you do outside of class. He does not lecture at all. The structure reminded me of an online class. Extra help from him in office hours is not very helpful as he only quizzes you and makes you feel stupid.
Dr. Kinkle is the absolute worst professor on campus. He doesn't care whatsoever about you as a student, and sets the entire class up to fail. He can't really even be considered a professor, because he doesn't teach ANYTHING. You have to be fully prepared when you walk into class, and if not, you'll fail 3 quizzes. His office hours suck too. AVOID.
Dr. Kinkle definitely makes you work for the grade but cares about his students so much! His tests are hard, but if you go to every class and study you'll be absolutely fine.
Even though this class is difficult I learned a lot from Dr. Kinkle and am grateful I got to take his class. Don't just do the assigned Learning Outcomes, actually try to understand the material. Doing this will make his exams easier. The 1082 class is easier than 1081 in my opinion, but I actually learned from him which I can't say for all profs.
Read before class and you will be fine. The in-class clicker quizzes really aren't hard if you read and the exams aren't bad either. Kinkle was a great professor for my first year because he gets you ready for the harder classes in the future. If you take his class seriously you will learn how to pass classes where the professor doesn't care.
Dr. Kinkle was super intimidating to me at first.. probably because he has strict rules and expectations of the way his class will run and has no problem calling you out for not following his rules. Dont even think about getting on your phone HA!! Even though he was strict I am so glad I had him because I learned the most by far in his class.
You teach yourself, if you don't show up you get an F for the day, even if you have an excuse. There are three quizzes during each class that are worth credit.
Terrible. Doesnt teach at all and just expects you to teach yourself from the textbook. Youre basically just paying for a super expensive textbook by taking this course
I took this class online and its set up that we take an exam over the previous weeks content every Monday. During class there was no lecture and we were sent into breakout rooms to do a worksheet, basically teaching one another the content. No answer key was ever given for this worksheet so it wasn't clear if what we were learning was right.
Dr. Kinkle's teaching style and my learning style could not be more different. This class is basically just reading the textbook then reviewing in class but he doesn't answer any of your questions. Weekly exams with 20 questions with a 10 min time limit. Would not recommend to anyone who doesn't learn by reading a textbook.
Classes were good at first before he thought of taking us into these breakout rooms where we're put with students who rarely understand the material either. I don't understand why we can't go to class and have some reinforcement from a teacher about what we're learning.
At the beginning of the online semester, the class was okay and the material wasn't too difficult since it was essentially just a recap of high school biology. As the semester progressed, the class changed. Not only did the professor begin to only cater to one type of learning style, but he actually said don't come if you don't like that style.
This is a hard class as there's little graded homework and your grade is based mostly on weekly quizzes. However, Dr. Kinkle is the first professor I've had that teaches skills to be successful in life, not just his class. He gives out resources on exercise, self-care, and time management and he is always readily available to help with coursework.
Dr. Kinkle started the semester with good lectures however, after a few weeks he changed the class style where students completed group worksheets in breakout rooms with no feedback. Many students expressed their discontent with this learning style and his response was "don't come if you don't like it". Overall easy, but prepare to teach yourself.
He routinely kicks people out of class and doesn't accommodate to the needs of the students at all. No excuses for missing quizzes/tests/assignments. Heart of ice. He *says* attendance isn't mandatory, but then will set you up to fail if you don't come, or if he kicks you out (which he'll do for next to no reason at all). Not sure how he has tenure
Expected 5000% output from students, even when many were struggling to help their families in times of need. He would imitate and humiliate students in front of the entire lecture hall and violate their ferpa rights. Not sure how he's still at the University. Worst professor I've ever had at UC, and I stayed for all of undergrad AND grad school.
I paid to be taught the material by a professor, instead I wasted money on a class only to learn from a textbook on my own. In lectures we spent the majority of the time in breakouts to do a worksheet no one really understood, with no key posted after. Whenever we would ask Kinkle a question instead of giving us an answer he told us to google it.
You will never have a professor this organized with LOs ever again. Appreciate it now. While he himself is quite rude and not understanding, his class is set up for you to succeed. You will have to put the work in outside of class, those who do score better on exams, those who don't do very poorly in the class. Flipped classrooms are the new norm
Perhaps the most wasteful class I have ever taken. Did not teach a single lecture, instead relegating freshmen to small groups to play virtual bumper-cars together each session, occasionally popping in to embarrass one for not having independently learned a concept to full application prior to class. 30/400 students attended by semester end.
Criticizes students who don't understand a concept they had to teach themselves. Sends students into groups with a worksheet that has no answer key. Gives quizzes with 30 seconds per questions (20 questions, 10 minutes) each week and you can only find out what you got wrong or if you go to office hours. TERRIBLE for different learning styles.
Does not lecture, answers questions during class and office hours. You spend 40 mins on a worksheet with 1-2 other students. The last 10 mins of class are for poll questions, which are very helpful. Because of COVID, we had cumulative quizzes every week that were 20 questions 10 minutes instead of midterms. Definitely read before class. Is nice.
Although class format was very different this year, I, and several other students, struggled very much this semester from Dr. Kinkle's online teaching style. If you are attending Kinkle's online biology courses, be prepared. Be SURE to attend lecture, and STUDY THE LOs. He doesn't give any answers in-class for WS's, so seek extra help when you can!
Biology is my favorite subject, yet this professor made class miserable. He acts superior to his students and expects them to have every concept mastered before class. He lectured at the beginning of the year, then stopped and gave us unhelpful group worksheets. Why am I paying $12K+ a year to teach myself with a textbook?
I think he wants students to learn and he has good intentions, but he is incredibly rude and needs to find more ways to teach. He didn't lecture or teach us anything, we taught ourselves with the textbook. He doesn't even give out answer keys. He acts like you won't get into med/dental/vet/grad school if you don't learn the way he does. Worst prof!
Kinkle says his class is a flipped classroom. It wasn't. A flipped classroom is when you watch a lecture before class and read the textbook and then go to class to do practice. There were lecture videos at the beginning but then he stopped making them. He wants students to fail and he makes biology a weed out course.
He is not a good bio professor. puts you in breakout rooms with different students each time to discuss a worksheet that does not pertain to the weekly "exams". the weekly exams were cumulative (20 questions in 10 minutes) the answers are always hidden. 0/10 do not recommend as a bio professor.
Taking this class online was terrible. His version of lectures were breakout groups where no one was willing to work and so they were useless. Originally, we started with lectures and I did very well, but as soon as we did the breakout rooms, my grade dropped. I didnt do terribly in the class, but I was all on my own with learning the material.
Dr. Kinkle made my first semester of college stressful and awful at times. He expected us to take weekly exams (releasing them from Saturday to Monday morning, forcing us to take them on the weekends) and made students scared to ask questions or even come to class. He was not encouraging and did not give us the tools to succeed. Worst prof ever 0/5
Dr. Kinle is the worst professor at the University of Cincinnati. During a semester of many challenges, he held weekly exams that could essentially only be taken on weekends, never answered questions asked by students, and was not understanding at all. Only 40 out of 400 students showed up to class and you basically had to teach yourself. 0/5!!
You will have to teach yourself all of the material. He will not clarify anything.
Dr. Kinkle is a great professor and genuinely cares for students. Many students dislike Dr. Kinkle due to the workload and commitment needed to be successful in his class. Most incoming freshman are looking for an easy A and you will not find it here. If you want to actually learn material and become a better student this is the class for you.
Dr. Kinkle is the most inconsiderate professor I have ever had in my life. He does not care about his students, I would never take his class again solely for the lack of regard he has for others.
The only grades are weekly exams. You have 10 minutes to answer 20 questions. 75% of the material is from that week and the other 25% is from previous weeks. Almost nobody shows up for class. You will have to read the textbook. If you read the textbook and take notes, you should be able to pull an A.
Going to class is pointless, you sit in a breakout room with a handful of students working on a worksheet that isn't for credit. If you have to take this class I recommend skipping class and spending the time reading the textbook and answering the learning objectives. Weekly quizzes give you 30 seconds per question and you can't go back.
Brian Kinkle made freshman Bio way harder than it needed to be. I have always been adept in biology but I've learned absolutely nothing and was made to rely on prior knowledge only. Was rude to me in office hours and clearly does not care for his students. I wouldn't recommend if you actually want to learn material.
This man has not put effort into teaching a single class this semester. We teach ourselves everything and he blames us when we don't know something that he DIDN'T TEACH US. Not good, don't take his class.
I would never take Kinkle again. He does not lecture at all and the class time is all group work that I found to be completely worthless. He does not give any sort of extra credit or second chances. The grade is completely based on weekly exams that often ask questions that are stupidly specific. His class has no redeeming qualities. Avoid.
I don't know why I paid so much for a class where I taught myself. Dr. Kinkle does not lecture and the only grades come from a 10 minute 20 question quiz every week which you are required to complete over the weekend. I get stuggling though a pandemic but because he gave up on teaching, the students suffered. Theres not enough room to say it all.
Avoid at all costs. Kinkle does not do lectures in class (or post lectures outside class). Weekly exams (20 questions, 10 min time allowed) + Final are 100% of your grade. Exams require substantial amount of studying for chance to pass, Q's are extremely detailed for intro bio. Refused to change "teaching" style or time limit on exams.
Dr. Kinkle questionably made his class do group work online, and due to non mandatory lectures many students did not want to put in the effort, myself included. When I began attending class again half way through the semester and studying the way he recommended, my grades improved. Its a lot of work, difficult tests, but I feel Ive learned a lot.
I had him for online class. He did not give any lectures and we had weekly exams of 20 questions in 10 minutes. When you went to class he would put you in random groups every class to discuss material with students who had no idea either. No lectures, no feedback of incorrect answers on tests nothing. I read from the book and he doesnt teach
he gave us many quizzes and he expects you to answer a question in less than 30 seconds, therefore, his tests are 30 questions 15 minutes, other than that he is a very nice professor.
Each class you had Learning Objectives assigned to you and are expected to read the textbook to answer the questions. I found often that there was a lot of reading. During covid, we had a "test" due Monday at 9am that was 20 questions long and you had 10 minutes to take it. During class, you'd work on a worksheet with other students.
Nothing personal against Dr Kinkle but his teaching style is NOT for me and I would avoid taking his class again. He does not lecture, huge lecture hall is broken into groups which is very loud and NOT ideal for a neurodivergent person. I feel disorientated every class. I actually learn very well with lectures and a quiet classroom. This is not it.
Im currently taking his class and do not recommend. he says that by him lecturing, you dont learn. so you have to teach yourself. I guess im the only one who does learn that way. you basically go in to take a quiz bc he doesnt lecture or anything.
I am struggling terribly in this class. I spend hours reading, taking notes & completing the LOs. The class seems difficult for entry level biology, mixed with Dr Kinkles teaching style (or lack there of) my grade is doomed- I have a previous AS degree and had a 4.0 GPA. During class we just talk in our groups and can barely hear each other.
I'm not saying Dr. Kinle is a bad guy; in fact, he's an amazing guy, but not such a great professor. His class is very fast-paced and hard to keep up with if you need quality time to learn like me. I am an auditory learner and you will never see the day he actually explains something thoroughly. If you take this class get a tutor, you'll need one.
Dr Kinkle runs a pretty tough course. You will likely need extra help (which is available!). His focus is teaching you the skill of self-learning, which is crucial to success. Use the SI sessions, khan, his office hours etc. If you don't use any of these resources, you can't complain about not doing well in the class. You need to put the effort in.
I did not enjoy this class at all. I didn't learn much from it, and he rarely lectured. He only split us into groups, then refused to answer our questions. Although I appreciate the fact he tried a new teaching style, no one I spoke to in the class enjoyed it.
Dr. Kinkle swears by his teaching method which is not a teaching method at all. He doesnt talk about the stuff in Biology that really matters, then will give you an exam worth 80% of your grade on things he has NEVER talked about. His class is ridiculous and I do not recommend taking Biology with him.
EVERY class is a quiz or exam. Every class you are given questions to answer the whole time, which he claims to be active learning. In reality, you are learning nothing from him & paying for nothing. You read out of the textbook on ur own time No way to even bring your grade up if you don't do well on an exam.
If you say that Dr Kinkle doesn't teach you, you are looking at it wrong. He is trying to teach you how to teach yourself. Think about it, if you can learn the skill of how to self-learn, it will never matter if you have a "bad" professor. He gives several different resources to get help with the course, like the SI sessions. Those are so helpful.
If theres one thing that can be said about Dr Kinkle its that he runs a tight ship. He will kick you out if youre texting or doing anything other than using your computer for a quiz in class, but thats alright because his classes are by far the most engaging of any of my lessons. As long as you do the reading youll be fine.
You'll have to teach yourself. Class is exclusively quizzes, individual and with a small group. I am anxious every time I am in the class. He is arrogant about his way of teaching despite the fact it doesn't work for a lot of people. I would not recommend taking his classes.
Dr Kinkle is very nice and has a great personality. However, he is not paid to be nice. His lectures are completely useless and you are basically teaching yourself. If you have another option, take it. If not, I'm sorry for you.
must do all your own learning outside of class
Kinkle is a funny person, but his class is an actual joke. His entire philosophy is 'active learning'. His lectures are quiz based and its basically constant testing. At the beginning of the year, you get assigned groups randomly that almost help to determine how this class will go for you. Kinkle does not do well explaining anything in lecture.
Dr. Kinkle's teaching style is definitely unique and not meant for everyone. Most learning is done outside of class and lecture is spent briefly reviewing that material. Dr. Kinkle expects you to know most information inside and out as he makes the exam questions pretty specific. Utilize his office hours and attend SI sessions whenever you can!
I took Biol1081 and the teaching style is rough and takes time to get used to. Not a lecture and you learn everything from the textbook and have to basically teach yourself. Definitely use your resources or you probably won't pass. He does not curve or give extra credit even if you are like one percent away from passing the class.
Dr. Kinkle definitely has a teaching style that doesn't work for a lot of people. You need to teach yourself the material and even if you ask questions, you have to answer them yourself/he won't give an outright answer. If I had the choice again, I would not pick him or his class. It's just not worth the emotional effort.
Dr. Kinkle wasnt too bad and was fun at times, but the class was a huge adjustment due to the way the class is shaped with the flipped classroom/learning. Unfortunately, this isnt the way I learn so it was very difficult to get used to and I had to put in effort to do well. If I had the choice, I wouldve probably picked a different professor
Despite what a lot of people say, Dr. Kinkle really cares for his students. He wants to see his students succeed not only in his class, but in others as well. He gives students a specific way to learn and study, and it is necessary to adapt. When done right, his method of teaching and studying is very effective, but students must put in the effort.
You are given learning outcomes you must master before you come to each class and then you do 5 pre, 5 group, and 5 post questions relating to the topic. I found his lectures to not rlly help me understand the learning outcomes at all. Personally I used the text book, old quizlets of his past questions, and YouTube videos. Effort is needed to pass!
You won't like him for the first week or two but once you get used to his teaching style you will love it. You do have do a lot of work and learning on your own since class time is focused on practicing the material. If you are a hard worker you will love this class
kinkle doesn't allow you to take notes in class and he never goes over any in class quiz questions even if the majority of the class gets it wrong. also my friends grandpa died and she had to miss an exam and he told her there was nothing he could do and she would just have to take the zero. do not recommend, fr avoid him if you can
you won't like him at first but once you get used to his teaching style he's not too bad. he makes you work for your grade and you have to attend class for the in-class turning point quizzes. pretty much just do the work, read the sections he says, and pay attention and you'll pass
No matter your opinion on kinkle you can admit that you really did learn something in his class. For good grades, this class needs to be your #1 thing on your mind and it requires HIGH effort. The SI sessions give you everything you need to know for the exams. I would never take this class again but I learned so much.
Still one of my fav UC professors. Class is not a breeze and he is VERY tough.. but he's a great guy and truly cares for the students that prove themselves. Had him fresh year and it really made me get my act together. Study hard, make personal connections with him, truly dedicate the time to learn the content and you'll be fine
You do not go to his lectures to learn, you go to make sure you know the material and if you should study it more. You have to read the book and keep up with the material to do well. As far as the exams, study as much as you can throughout the weeks leading up to them because cramming simply will not work.
His class involves you reading the text outside of class and focusing on learning outcomes, then doing mc quizzes every day with a group of 3-5 with info slides in between the ?s He can come off intimidating/arrogant sometimes as he is confident his way of teaching is superior. He's a nice guy but his style of teaching isn't for everyone.
Kinkle is not kind but if you can teach yourself the material that you are speeding through in class then you will be able to pass his exams.
Dr. Kinkle is super harsh on students. He doesn't let you take notes and leaves little room for error. He makes frequent grammatical errors on exams and will kick a student out of his lecture whenever he sees a chance. He believes that we should be able to teach ourselves the material instead of actually going over it.
You get a random group at the beginning of the semester. Each class contains 3 quizzes worth 5 pts (pre, group, post). Theres no graded hw, just learning outcomes before each class to prep for the material. Theres also concept checks which is when you draw something youve learned (graded 5 pts). Grade is mostly based on the exams (45 pts).
you will either really like Kinkle or not like him at all. he is arrogant about how "amazing" his lecture style is and he doesn't let you take any notes. you're expected to do learning outcomes before class that prepare you for that day. VERY strict about his no phone/no other tabs open policy and will kick you out in front of the entire class
Kinkle's class really isn't as bad as many students say. As long as you do your reading and study a few nights before the exams you'll be fine. The format of the class makes a lot of sense and the exams are very fair. Just don't sit on your phone or mess around during class!
If you like lectures do not take kinkle he expects you to learn everything outside of class. All test are multiple choice. I wish I had taken another proffesor .
The first 2 weeks that you go to class will be different from any kind of learning that you have done. Once you adjust to it, you should be fine You must be able to explain and draw the learning outcomes from memory not just copying from the textbook. He genuinely cares about his students and gives them resources to succeed in his class. Use them!
He expects you to learn all of the material before class, and basically memorize the textbook. The entirety of the class time is used for taking quizzes and talking in groups. He forces his students to work in groups, even if they do not learn well in those environments. DO NOT go to office hours, but DO go to SI sessions.
tough and very strict
This class requires a lot of work but it really does prepare you for even harder classes in the future. Dr. Kinkle genuinely cares about teaching students the proper ways to study for success. Go to his office hours and the SI sessions every. single. week. Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions. He isn't as scary as he seems.
Terrible experience.
His class was super difficult. You have to stay on top of every little thing.
Would not recommend to take kinkle if you don't have to. His ego is so high and he thinks his way of teaching is the only way. A LOT of studying/preparing for exams. He offers office hours but when I went he told me that it was all in the book. He did not teach me one bit of information during the semester. You have to teach yourself everything.
he doesn't care and grades are all test-based, office hours are pointless.
Honestly made my experience at uc worse than it should have been.
Good luck if you got kinkle for bio. One time I went to his office hours for help and he laughed at the grade I got on my first ever exam in the class. Will teach you absolutely nothing and will be even less of a help if you go to him. Almost switched majors completely because of this man. STAY AWAY.
If you do the LOs, go to SI, and go to office hours you will pass. Getting a good group of people to study with really helps. Do not be on your phone in class or you will get kicked out.
Overall Dr.Kinkle wasnt to bad. Early on his class was hard for me and I struggled a bit but I started to do what he told us to do and my grade shot up. He is tough but fair, and as long as you do the LOs and practice/draw things out you will be fine.
This was simply one of the toughest classes I have ever taken in my 4 years of college. This class is very reading and test heavy. If there is a way for you to not take his class, I highly recommend it. To succeed in this class you have to thoroughly read every page of the book to make sure that you understand the smallest of concepts. AVOID!!!!
If you are forced to take this class like I was, just know you have to work your butt off. Kinkle is not a good guy and barely a good teacher. Go to all si sessions and write notes for LOs. You can skim the book for the answers and use quizlets.
Dr.Kinkle overall wasn't too bad. Early on due to how his class differed from others it was difficult. There definitely is a learning curve. I did leave this class with a very good grasp of the topics taught to me. This translated well into other classes that I have taken and I am very grateful for that. Overall pretty good professor.
The best professor at UC. He cares so much about his students as long as you make an effort to do well in his class. He will stay on campus 12 hours just to meet with students or hood study sessions. He instilled very good habits in me and really cares to change the way you learn.
He is a tough grader and teacher but very fair. He's very nice and the class will be a breeze if you do what is expected of you. That's good because he makes it very clear what is expected of you every day.
He believes that you can't learn by just being lectured to, and to a degree that is true, but he takes it to the extreme and refuses to teach anything. You are expected to teach yourself the material before class each day, and you will be graded on it before class starts... but what's the point of the class if you just teach yourself the material?
In all of High School and college I have received As. If you miss a day, you miss three quizzes with no way to make them up. You are put into groups with random strangers and are with them the entire semester. Everything is cumulative, so if you don't frequently study material from the first tests, you are guaranteed to miss points.
The attendance is mandatory for this class! My main issue was he said only drawing pictures will help you pass and if you don't go to office hours you'll fail. I tried going once and he made me feel kind of stupid. He is very self-centered, cares about himself. Failed his class and had to retake it. Please take it with another professor!
Kinkle is a tough professor on the outside, but every office hour session was helpful and he was very thoughtful one on one. He gets a very scary/mean/harsh reputation, but he prepares you well for other hard college courses. I will say I struggled A LOT but it was worth it. Your entire grade is just exams.
His lectures are not your typical lectures. He expects you to know most of the material before going into class, preparing before every class is crucial. His classes mainly consist of clicker questions. There are multiple mini-quizzes in every class to gauge the content. The way I have studied and learned has changed positively due to him.
Had Dr.Kinkle two semseter ago and the longer I'm in college the less his behavior seems acceptable. His classroom was a very hostile learning environment. The office hours will make you feel dumb and small. I think he tries to be the "weeding out" class and he definitely is but it just comes across as an old guy on a power trip who is on tenure.
I have mixed feelings. I like his philosophy on learning & having ownership, but I think he takes it to an extreme. I felt like the class turned learning biology, which I really enjoy, into testing & doing it for a grade, which is anxiety-inducing. He is actually pretty nice, though. My group would joke around with him during class, sometimes.
Dr.Kinkle is overall an okay professor. He expects you to learn the content before class and use class as a review. Expect most of your grade to be based on the four exams, class requires a 50+ dollar clicker, and all exams are multiple choice. He WILL try and trick you on questions. Office hours are unbearable, he has no problem putting you down.
Kinkle is a dawg. people be hating because they don't want to learn. will be missed at UC.
Kinkle was worst professor in my whole college life. Tests are heavy and lecture contents are too difficult. You should go to classroom on time to success for this course since he uses Clicker quizzes and it is used from the beginning to the end of the class
Like no professor I had, I'm now an alum from the university of Cincinnati and I originally hated his class but by the time we got halfway through the semester I wished all my professors taught like him. He was one of the most present professors and genuinely cared about being there. I loved that be broke down why he taught the way he did!
