Nice professor. Willing to sacrifice his own time to help you, very good!
His Exams are really tough(class average 45%). He is only into algebra. It's like taking a Math course. The most important thing in an exam is to be relaxed and try not to be overwhelmed by ambiguous and tricky questions.
I DON'T LIKE HIM AT ALL!!! he MT was just WAAAAAy too long and hard...and he always made some mistakes in his notes!!! AVOID HIM!!!
I think he is more interested in teaching a English grammar course, not Economics because he really loves to tease at international sstudents on their English.
Don't suppose to learn any Macro theory except algebra. He always thinks that he is very clear for his explanation, however, he is leading us to fall into a trap. Also, if you get the textbook's overhead, you can skip classes til final.
wow. wow. wow. avoid this man. copy his notes. study the book. no no. mermorize the book and notes. do all of problems on the web. go to tutorial. love algerbra and NO economics. you MIGHT get a B
good person but bad prof. All algebra no economics, basically all math. often screws up on his notes. AVOID THIS MAN except u love algebra and u like to read A LOT
easy homework, easy exams! but u have to love algebra!

Seriously, the average for first MT was 91%. OHHHH THAT'S SOOOOO HARD! Gimme a break. And about memorizing the book, that doesn't help you any with the altered model questions. Anyhow, he's fine, not as scary as people make him out to be.
He is an insult to our intelligence. Exam questions same as assignments. The TAs were useless during tutorials. The class avg was way too high and made it very very hard to get an A.
He is a very nice proof. His exam is very easy as well as his assignment. Just study his past exams and the assignments, you will do well in the course!
Too easy.. Please make the material more challenging.
very easy overall~ studying well on lectures and practicing more problem will be very very helpful for sure. he is nice prof willing to offer extra help before exams. good luck...
I guess Econ435 is one of the most difficult course in SFU. It's the mixture of Math, Stat, and Econ. Brian understands the material very well. He is able to sit beside you and explain it for times. The midterms were tough and long, but as long as you do well on the term paper, the bad marks from midterms can be waived. Hard course but good prof!
Easy.
Ridiculous MT, but in general he's clear about what he is talking about. Should blame the textbook for the level of difficulty. Tutorial section is a MUST, they are more informative than lectures.
Jus done the 2nd mid 2day, in general, this prof is pretty nice and easy, the mids are fair, i knew that his previous mids and final are based on assignment q's, but this sem totally change dued to new text. And I know that many ppl are waiting till this sem to take him, ha! the avg is low, but actually not that hard. JUST TAKE IT FOR no regret!!
Could be better.
Spring 2006, blame the text book it's hard with the RBC model, the prof tried to make it as easy for his students as he can. Brian has very clear notes, knows what he is teaching, use class time very well.
The class average is about 64.
He is a nice guy. his final and MT is fair. You will doing fine if you really study on his note
What a terrific professor. Very well prepared. If you have a question, he will really help you understand it. His test are fair. He makes it very clear what he expects for answers. If you need something remarked, he is very fair about it. I definitely recommend him. Refreshing to see a professor who genuinely enjoys teaching.
A hit or miss marker: Brian Krauth does not seem to believe in awarding partial marks. Never have I read such concise notes; every sentence 'literally' represented an independant idea or thought; read them carefully and thoroughly, if not, you will fail. No doubt, he is there for the money. Nevertheless, class was well structured and well run.
I've only written the first midterm so far. Immediately after completing his exam..i wanted to cry. It was soooo HARD! But it made me feel so much better when i found out that 90% of the class did just as BAD. The class average was 44%!! I did about average. gotta see about the 2nd midter...i'll be back
Course is hard no questions. But Krauth makes it even harder with unclear as to what concepts are important and every1 was surprised for MT1, even the TAs were surprised at what he put on the MT. Gone over general Cobb-Douglas version but test you on Perfect Complements. Avg MT1&2 44%.
Brain is a great prof. and have been very helpful in answering questions asked. The midterms are more than fair (only 5 questions). The Final was even easier than i thought. Easy course & prof.
Brain is one of the best prof. ever in SFU not only because of his helpfulless, but also he always try to explain concepts in the clearest way. His midterms are more than fair and the final was a piece of cake. He gave marks aways. Take him if you have chances!
MT1 and 2 avgs were 44 and 46 respectively. Final average was 51%.
really nice prof, exams are easy, keep working on assignments and you will get scores.
He passes out easy practice midterms to do then screws you over on the test by giving out questions that haven't been done before. Don't buy a paper copy of the textbook b/c he'll make you buy Aplia ($90).
Class is taught with textbook so easy to keep up. Midterms are killer and he is a hard marker with odd marking rubric
Makes easy practice exams, but extremely hard midterm exams. Way too hard for 100 level econ course.
gives random exam questions that was never taught in class, notes in class is very random. Horrible prof.
Horrible!
As I am studying for the final, I have concluded that his in class notes are useless. Econ 105 is a pretty straightforward course but his midterm written questions are unfair. Marking scheme for written is also plain bad. Deducts marks for each wrong you get, so even if you get a few questions right, u could still end up with 0 on the written.
He is a nice professor who will help you out if you ask him. However, his midterms can be killer. It can range from easy to hard. Grading system is a bit weird. Online assignments done on Aplia is completely different from the actual midterms/finals.
Excellent teacher. Yes his tests were difficult but he tells you right at the beginning of the semester that if theres something he wants you to focus on, he'll go over it on class. I focused on one big concept for the first midterm and ended up getting 92. He explains things very clearly, relates everything to real life. Phenomenal professor.
He is a decent lecturer, but a horrible exam writer. Nothing he says in class will be tested. He teaches vague concepts and expects you to be able to piece it all together on the tests with no source of practice. The median for the written part on the mt was 0, and it was worth 20%. Horrible, avoid if possible
his marking scheme absolutely sucks. Great helpfulness but really awful marking scheme.
keep repeating stuff on the text. basically u will do good if u keep up with the text, but i hate his grading method.
Gives the option of not writing a midterm for weight to be transferred to final. Do that if you're not ready as his final was easier than 2nd midterm. 20% of your grade is on easy online homework so its a freebie. His tests are basically like highschool, 40 not so bad M/C(worth 2 each) and 20 points of written for 100 marks. Study and u'll be fine.
His notes are terrible and not helpful in helping you prepare for exams. He simply writes everything he says, like a transcript of his lecture. He should focus on the important stuff and do examples questions, which he doesn't. Nice guy though, and he reminds me of the actor David Emmerson, even walks like him. My tip is, make your own notes.
Excellent professor. In my first semester at university I took macroeconomics with him and found it a relatively easy course to get an A in. Marks were scared very fairly at the end. He teaches you how to think like an economist, which is essential - memorizing what the book says will get you nowhere. Great guy and prof.
Worst prof ever. Ridiculous marking scheme (how is anything below 60 a fail) for an intro level class. Doesn't bump students up, midterms are really hard, and the final is brutal (our class average was around 65 for the final. Avoid this awful professor at all costs.
textbook and lecture notes didnt help much when it came to exams. midterms were easier than the final. if you can do well on the practice exams then you would do well on the actual exams. textbook was only used when it came to doing assignments
he was a good teacher. Fairly easy and very helpful!
Really Easy to understand and relates Econ topics to real world examples. Tests are not the easiest but are marked fair. Writes out notes in class. Very clear and interesting lectures.
Prof. Krauth is very clear, very knowledgeable in his field and very helpful with questions. He throws in the occasional jokes which are actually quite funny. His tests are not the easiest and takes a significant amount of time to study for, but the "rate of return" is very rewarding if you do.
This teacher is horrible. jesus christ i was shook by his marking scheme. AVOID THIS PROFS CLASS UNLESS YOU WANT AN F. I put in workk i swear i put in work, and this guy just effed it up. WORST PROF IN HISTORY REAL TALK THO
Krauth is a nice guy, but his marking scheme is absolutely ridiculous. According to this course outline, anything below 70% is a D. I did all his past finals so many times, and reviewed all his past midterms for the final. What did i get? The final exam was absolutely RIDICULOUS. Bad prof overall, avoid if possible.
Final exam was hard and brutal. His marking scheme is terrible and his lectures are basically just reading the book to the class and defining terms. I would avoid this teacher if possible
Extremely unfair marking rubric. Who makes a 100 level entry class with a mandatory of 60% to pass the course. Horrible notes and useless lectures. Exams were extremely unreasonably hard. Avoid this prof. if possible!!
I really liked Professor Krauth. He was a nice guy & very passionate about Economics, & ready to help you if you ask. Tutorials were not mandatory & his lectures were mainly summarizing the textbook chapters. The written portion of his exams are tough; the class isn't curved but his grading scale is adjusted accordingly to the class average.
AVOID this prof if you can. He asks TOUGH questions. He makes the material harder then it has to be. Multiple choice part is decent, the written is impossible. Questions not taken from the book. Also grading rubric is unfair. It's not on a curve! This type of course should be curved.
T.A are not helpful at all, but the prof is willing to help. Final exam is extremely hard, not given out on the textbook or lecture.
Mixed feelings about this guy. Lectures are boring, online assignments aren't similar to the exams. Class isn't curved but he still adjusts his scale based on the average. The midterms were decent, a lot of the questions are on past midterms. The final was BRUTAL, I think the class average was 42. He is SUPER helpful, so go to his office hours!!
his exams are 50% TF questions, 50% math problems You can get a good grade if you do the past years exams(its on canvas) and memorize formulas
Krauth is a good lecturer but he does cover some things that arent going to be on the exam. A lot of people say the exam questions are tough but really, they test your knowledge and application on the concepts learned. They are fair but not too difficult. The marking scheme may seem atrocious at first but it will change according to students mark
His grading scale will scare you to death, anything below 70 is a D. HOWEVER, he ends up changing the grading for each mt/final depending on how bad/good your class does. To do well on MT/Final : Take notes of textbook material AND practice nonstop the past mt/finals as there will be repeated questions from the past.
Informative but occasionally dull lectures, manageable exams with plenty of revision materials. Your grade would likely correlate with your effort for this one: understand the lectures, practice past papers and you should be more than able to obtain a decent grade
He is really good at explaining and makes some concepts simpler. I enjoyed his class because he is very nice and he includes many important ideas on the slides.
Prof Krauth is your standard economics professor. His exams are fairly challenging and unpredictable as the written portion of the exam is made up based on current events happening in the global economy. The written portion of the exams tend to be either longer and more straightforward or shorter and more confusing. Lectures can get quite boring.
Going to class makes you feel like you're receiving world-class education. He's grounded on a serious foundation of economic knowledge. He cares about how you do in his class. He doesn't trick you in exams and clarifies questions to get you the marks you deserve. He has a very respectable personality - make sure to visit office hours to learn more
Brian is a beauty. His lectures are somewhat interesting, however you learn how to apply the concepts in tutorial. He wants you to do well; he tells you what to study and helps alot during the exam when you ask a question. Make sure you go to study sessions the night before the tests because the TA's will pretty much tell you whats on the test.
Brian is a really nice guy. Soft-spoken, not necessarily the best lecturer but he was very thorough and tried to make things easy to understand. I found this class super difficult but if economics is your thing, I'm sure you'd like him as a prof!
Studied extremely hard for the final, and what did I get? A final exam that was near impossible, with the majority of it on the last 3 chapters even though it was supposed to be cumulative. His written questions are unpredictable and aren't entirely reflective of your understanding. Hard marker, but accessible for help. There are easier 105 profs.
Brian is very nice and caring for his students. He provides a lot of past exams which we can practice. He has 20% worth sapling assignments which are free marks. Midterms and final are actually ez to me. Got 90+ on both. Students who cry about how hard his exam is are probably those who never study. IMAO. As long as u work hard u will get Above B
Professor Krauth is the quintessential economics professor. Lectures were valuable and included interesting current events discussions. Grading was very clear but the long answer questions could be difficult because there was no partial credit. Definitely a good choice for an introductory macroeconomics professor.
Brian is a really nice guy and is really clear on his expectations and what will be on the exam. He's cringy sometimes but he made me laugh and is quite caring. Sapling assignments were basically free marks and his midterms and final aren't that bad if you study. You could go with listening in class and doing the saplings and get a solid B
His class material is heavy but good thing is you can bring cheatsheet. The key to have good grade in this course is practice his exam practice and try to remember them. The both 2 midterm show up again a lot in the final exam so definitely look at the midterm for the final.
Good lecturer, somewhat humourous, but can be boring at times. Will try to be clear and thorough, and provides help when needed. Exams can vary in difficulty depending on which variation you get assigned. In that aspect, your grade can be heavily dependant on luck.
Cracks hella dad jokes to keep things entertaining. Hes the best 1st year prof I had no wonder he's the head of the department. Midterm and final are fair and straightforward. As long as you keep up with your notes and do ur sapling assignments, you'll be above average.
Absolute god.
Brian is an amazing person. He tries to keep students request. His lectures were good. His final exams may give you tough time.
The professor was nice, but the course is ridiculously challenging for an intro course, especially if you have no statistical background.
Avoid this professor for ECON 105 please! The exams are so hard, if you don't know the current news, you won't be able to answer the questions!
I would advice not to take this course. He gives homeworks and quizzes but nothing similar comes on the exam. If it is required then take bus232 rather than this, way easier and straightforward. Here the prof wont teach anything thats gonna come on the exams, only the basics. Harsh grader too so be careful.
Great prof who genuinely cares about his students and stays up all night for office hours to help you succeed. Also is extremely transparent so you know exactly where you stand, always,
Brian was a pretty chill prof. Attendance wasn't mandatory. The textbook was through Achieve Learning and there were weekly assignments that took 40mins max to complete, so it was pretty good. The exams are very similar to the practice exams he gives. Overall, if you understand the basics, you're gonna do fine.
Nice guy who wanted the students who tried in the class to succeed. If you are able to do the homework that he gives out the tests are essentially the same thing. He gives tons of recourses to help you prepare so the midterms and finals have no surprises.
He is insanely horrible. The Econ 105 course is already difficult and his grading scheme is extremely difficult as a C- is a 70. He said at the beginning of the course that he would adjust the grading scheme but a few days before our final he said that it would not change. He is a cruel person and it is a shame that he is the head Econ director.
Great prof. Great lectures and course layout. Brian clearly cares about his students. He provides all the resources necessary for you to succeed. You have to buy the textbook due to weekly quizzes linked to it but don't bother reading it. Lectures, tutorials and studying are enough. The content taught is valuable for everyday life. Highly recommend
I love the way Brian ran ECON 105. Attendance is optional, but tutorials are key since tutorials problems are very similar to exam questions and the answers are only available in tutorial. He provided us with a practice exam, with a key, for each exam. His exams were completely fair and reflected the tutorial problems and homework.
Sweet professor and very passionate about his stuff. The class was VERY hard, lots of math involved. Tutorials were disconnected from the class (bunch of excel stuff) but the problem sets given quite literally reflect the exams. Couldn't have asked for a simpler class. We also had a cheat sheet for the final.
Professor Krauth provides practice exams that closely reflect the format and types of questions found on the exam papers. However, the tutorials do not always align directly with the material covered in the exams, but as long as you study and do the work you will do fine.
Lectures are quite heavy but he gives you practice exams that are quite similar to the actual exams. Study the practice exams and you will do great. The lectures are heavy and he goes through nearly 100 slides and assigns weekly online quiz questions to do. Fair class and would take again
Brian provides a lot of practice exams and past exams that are exactly like what to expect on his exams
Krauth is super nice and helpful! I just felt like the content for ECON 233 was a little immaterial and could've been taught more conceptually instead of relying on formulas.
He gives you past exams that are almost exactly like the tests. As long as you practice those and understand key concepts you're good. He's also pretty funny.
Course structure was superb, everything crystal clear. Past and sample exams were gold. I would not say his lectures were awesome, but they were quite good. Very good at answering your questions. His excellent organization of the course made it really digestible and even easy at times. Kinda a lot of info tho so just be sure to keep up.
Seriously, Brian made this class easy, he gave us past tests and practically copy and pasted those same questions on the midterms and finals (no surprises). His lectures were difficult to sit through, but the online recordings were even harder to listen to, go to lecture its not even that bad and it WILL help you grade. Homework is easy marks DO IT
