goood guy, very unconventional for an honors prof.
Well read, well spoken professor. Extremely intelligent. Unconventional approach to instruction. Not an easy A, but worth every minute of effort. Your mind will EXPAND!
Probably the best teacher I have ever had!
great guy and very cool to students. Quite a bit of work, but he gives you a break in your final grade if you try hard to keep up. I've never met a student who doesn't like him.

Very cool, down to earth guy who puts a lot of effort into making sure the students understand what he wants, and has the appearance of a rock star to boot.
Brian is a great teacher! He is interesting and one of the smartest people I've ever met. He knows his material well and makes class fun.
Disorganized, talks about seemingly nothing. His final had not guidelines, and then he marks down for not meeting the expectations that he had never expressed. Likes to remind everyone how long "he has been in the business" in response to independent thought he doesn't agree with while simultaneously assigning "Pedagogy of the Oppressed."AVOID HIM!
Alright professor. Really weird acting. Didn't comprehend stuff he was saying. When asking for help, says more weird stuff. Really confusing. Really cool and nice though.
I wasn't going to say anything besides the usual student survey, but this professor should lose his job or be penalized. He didn't teach the class anything; the consequence is that this semester I am missing the necessary foundation in order to succeed in my more advanced classes. So I have to spend more time and money getting proper instruction.
I had Brian for honors writing and I thought that his class was awsome! We had to read a lot of philosophy and a lot of it went right over my head, but Brian's discussions of the material really expanded my thinking. He was very clear about what he wanted in the papers we wrote for the class. I really learned how to write well in his class.
Simply, the best professor that I've ever had. Ever.
If you spend any time at all at the field house gym, you'll see him there. ;) Extremely intelligent, though he seems to get along with certain people/mindsets better than others. If you make an attempt, you will get rewarded for it. At least pretend like you care about all the old philosophers!
Brilliant professor. Made classes fun and interesting. If you want to do well in this class, you should try to consistently participate in discussions.
Brian knows what he's talking about and does everything he can to make sure that his students do as well. His passion for teaching is unmatched in my experience so far. Speak up (even if you're wrong, he'll appreciate it!), pay attention, and let him know that you care about his class and you'll be fine.
Excellent class!!
He's a nice and interesting teacher. He loves what he teaches but can be difficult to understand. The homework was often overwhelming and difficult to understand. There are no tests or quizzes, just a a ten page paper due as a final. It feels like he grades based how much he likes you so make sure to participate in class a lot.
Loved class and Brian, but it was extremely difficult. Pay attention, participate in class, and write a lot on the online journal and you'll do fine. He is also super liberal and doesn't love LDS people/doctrine.
This is a very non-traditional class. Brian will very likely not assign a textbook. Instead you'll be looking at the writings that a textbook would reference. Participate often and try not to parrot back in your assignments and you'll do fine. Don't get bogged down in writing notes in class either, just go with the flow. It's an excellent class.
Interesting. He is either brilliant or a great actor. Seems to need to make a statement with his dress, but I wasn't sure what it was. Definitely passionate which is always good, but vague and sometimes difficult just for the sake of being difficult. Definitely some one to learn from, directly or indirectly.
Brilliant guy, doesn't really have anything worthwhile to talk about though, it's pretty much just talking about essays and other various writings in class. You don't need to read the reading assignments cause he doesn't test them, the only homework he gives are a few 2 page reviews, and one 10 page final.
Worth doing the readings. Makes class more interesting. Not your usual Honors class - which is a very good thing.
Very unconventional. Grades are based on the 10 page final paper, and how much you talk in class. There is no way to tell where you stand grade-wise throughout the semester, so if you're a person who likes structure, skip this one. Brian seems to know what he's talking about, but you get the feeling that he's just saying random s***.
Brian's the best. Recognizes the difficulty of readings but emphasizes making an effort. VERY beneficial to do the HW; you'll have something to say in class and the final is 10pg paper related to readings. Legitimate interest and participation gets the grade, go on the fieldtrips he sets up. He's sexy and the smartest dude I've ever met.
Although this class was interesting, I felt he was extremely unfair in his grading. It is based purely on participation and a 10 page final paper. He provides no feedback and little direction but still grades according to his specifications. Waste of time.
Kubarycz is probably the best teacher I have ever had. Anyone who does not receive an A is an idiot because he states clearly at the beginning of the semester that he grades on participation (saying something once in a while) and [appearing!] to know the content of the reading. Super easy, just talk.
By far the best professor I had at the University.
Highly amusing and pro at leaving the boring out of literature. be creative on the final and your grade goes to the top.
Basically, read the assignments and ask questions and talk and you WILL get an A.
Quite disorganized class and really huge unrealistic quantity of readings within a small timeframe. This class could be really wonderful but fell short due o organizational issues and too much (and too dense) material for the short time spent on each reading. Spend more time getting depth not shallow breadth!
Brian's weird and has a very different view on life and college than most people around here do. Class was based entirely off discussing the readings (he doesn't make you buy textbooks and posts the class readings on his blog instead), and your grade comes from mostly from a final paper. Overall one class with him was enough for me, but he's cool.
Brian is brilliant and I enjoyed his class but he has a very ... unique teaching method.. and is not open to new or differing opinions. he needs to be taken back down to earth sometimes, but you will learn a lot in the class and it is sufficiently challenging as an Honors course as far as material is concerned but not overwhelming
Brian's class was one I always looked forward to. The readings were challenging, but discussions were usually lively. Brian's lecture style is real and engaging, not stuffy and boring. If you like learning and broadening your horizons, take his class!
One of the best teachers I have ever had. I took 2 semesters of IT with him and had a blast. I also got an A in both classes. Do the readings, participate, write a decent and original paper and you should be fine.
Brian is one of the most unique and interesting professors I've ever had. He definitely is not a traditional professor - but that's not a bad thing. He's knows what he's talking about, and his class lectures are incredibly interesting and you can learn a lot from him. A large part of your grade is participation - make sure you talk in class.
Brian is a genius. All you have to do to get a decent grade is show that you care even a little bit about what he has to say, and express your thoughts about it. And he will give you an A. Super easy and an extremely awesome class. He knows so much about everything.
He's a really cool guy. really unconventional, and i liked him a lot as a person but i didn't like his teaching style. he reads a little much into everything and the whole class is mostly you listening to him and being confused. participation is very important so speak up. its not hard though. basically you get what you want out of the class.
He's great at teaching and every class is interesting. It made me like the humanities. He also gets to know his students well. But if you're a science major, be wary--his views on us are offensive at best. If you're reading this, we aren't all passionless. Most of us aren't. =[
Very likable guy but his class was a joke. We didn't follow the syllabus at all and didn't even cover the course subject matter. I was very disappointed.
He's a good professor. He is very honest with his students about what he expects of them. Be sure to talk in class, you get out of it what you put into it.
He is a nice guy, but his class is a joke. If you read everything and think about it, you can learn a lot. If you don't do any of the readings, you can still get an easy A.
This is a great class if you are willing to put in the effort to read the materials and actively think about it. Brian is very knowledgeable about what he lectures on and if you have an open mind you will learn things in his classes that you won't find in any other class. A lot of students don't do the readings and don't get much out of the class.
People either absolutely love Brian or absolutely hate him. His lectures kept me engaged, and I liked his creative interpretations of our readings. He doesn't give a lot of feedback, and he can't stand science majors. Taking his class was a growing experience for me.
Kubarycz is unlike any professor you've ever had before, but in a good way. He's extremely intelligent, and he conducts his classes like a jazz solo. Participation in class discussion is absolutely essential for a good grade. Kubarycz doesn't hate science majors, he just realizes that science isn't the answer to every interesting question out there
He truly is brilliant. He's engaged in the conversation and has interesting takes on thing. However, his teaching style is very untraditional. If you don't talk, you won't get a good grade. Simple as that. No textbook, but large amounts of online readings. As long as you attend class, read, and participate, you should be fine!
Kubarycz is a very intelligent person, and what he says is fascinating. My issue with him is that his class is a nightmare logistically. He expected 120 pages of reading for each day of class, twice a week. He is very inconsistent in what he says. He will ramble on all class about what you discussed the previous class. I DO NOT recommend.
Brian is a really cool guy, but as a professor I would not recommend him to anyone. I left just about every lecture completely confused, and he assigned so much reading material that I constantly felt overwhelmed and didn't know what to prioritize. He rarely gives good feedback, and even when you ask him for help, he rarely is satisfied with work.
He just talks and talks, with no apparent point. His "discussions" are really just him talking to a class of hands up. He has a king complex of sorts and the class is really all about him. He is very well read and very intelligent but he doesn't like to reuse words so he is unclear. For the assignments, I'm not even sure HE knows what he wants.
Brian is an amazingly intelligent guy & understands all books & philosophers almost to a faulthe babbles on for hours & considers it a "class discussion." He also doesn't take any new ideas in, though he pretends he encourages it. Your entire grade is based on 1 paper & class participation, though you really have to be aggressive to get a word in.
He seems like he knows what he is talking about, and can go on for a long time and string along different ideas while leaving most everyone in the dust. Your grade is based almost entirely on participation. Prepare for a lot of reading too. There are a about 2 papers which are graded, but the rest is graded on participation.
You have to be a quick thinker in order to participate amidst his ramblings.
He means to be confusing, because he's just trying to make his students think and adapt to an environment they haven't been in before. Keep in mind that all he wants is a reaction from you, and there is no right reaction. He assigns lots of readings, my advice is focus on the ones that interest you. Some people love him, some hate him.
Brian lectures without any notes and without stopping for the whole class. He assigns a lot of readings each week. Your grade is based off participation, a group midterm, and a 10 pg final paper. He posts everything on a blog where it's hard to find all the readings. He's very smart and a cool guy , but I would not recommend taking his class.
He's one of the most interesting people I've ever met and his lectures are usually really interesting so the long classes fly by. Most of the class is discussing the readings, which you should at least skim even if you don't understand them. I cannot stress enough how important discussion participation is, contribute anything you think is relevant.
Wow he is a dedicated professor! Brian lives and breathes what he teaches. I have never had such engaging classroom discussions, especially about text written 2000 years ago! His class is very difficult because you HAVE to do the readings and participate, but if you put in the work he will make sure you get a lot out of it.
Brian is the best professor that I have had in my young college career. His lectures and discussions are very informative and educational, while also being interesting. I had him in a three-hour class and it honestly felt shorter and more fun than my shorter classes. Highly recommend.
Brian is basically the best professor I've had so far as a student. His class was challenging, but he works really well with you and he's all around a cool guy. He's super dedicated and you can go to him with any issues. I completely recommend taking his class.
Lots of reading, but a lot of people didn't read and could still pass by by just adding off what he said in class. Says he wants engaged class discussions but he just rambles all class without allowing for comments. He pushes his narrative of what the texts mean and isn't receptive to other ideas. The grade at the end felt arbitrary & unclear.
Brian loves to talk. He lectures for extended periods of time with no breaks. However, his lectures are interesting; he is able to relate the class texts to his students' lives in an interesting fashion. He is a very intriguing person and I learned a lot in his class. There are very few assignments in his class, so be sure to put effort into each.
Brian is unlike any professor Ive had, in the best way possible. It was a tough class, but I learned a lot talking about ideas and points of view Id never considered. Participation is key, he wants to see that you care and want to improve.
There is one key to passing Brian's class: get to know him. He is readily available for office hours and you must take advantage to talk with him and get to know him, and make sure your presence is made known in class. Class consists of him talking the entire time about assigned readings. Entire grade was based on 10-page final and participation.
Brian is interesting- I think people either hate or love him. If you resonate with him, he'll leave you feeling introspective and part of something larger. Those who don't vibe with him may find him grandiose and his lectures are pretentious. But, if you keep an open mind and heart, you'll love his class-- it might even change you for the better.
Brian was interesting and always had a lot to say. However he also asked you to participate, and never provided opportunities since he lectured the whole time. There was also a ton of readings in the class, which tended to be difficult to manage, especially since the questions he did ask were about specific parts and his particular interpretations.
I love philosophy- this was not it. I wanted to read authors like Thomas Aquinas. Instead, we read a thesis on magic systems throughout the world's history. Way too much reading that we never covered in class. He lectures all day and calls it a discussion, then makes you feel dumb for arguing against him. Find someone else for IT2.
Your entire grade for the course is based upon your participation in class, but Brian gives you very few opportunities to speak as he spends the whole class period talking himself with few pauses. I would only recommend this course if you're willing to be aggressive to speak up and talk to him outside of class hours.
A lot of reading is assigned, but barely anything is covered in class. Brian rants about everything under the sun all class and calls it a discussion. He asks for student participation but really just wants you to stroke his ego and tell him how great he is. Your grade at the end of the class is based on how much he likes you. Would not recommend.
Brian is well-spoken, so he talks non-stop in class about the readings but easily gets off track and ultimately rants about how universities are just machines that pop out grads as quickly as possible without nurturing learning. This is great if you care about what he's talking about, but it's difficult to get in your participation points.
Brian grades a lot on participation but doesn't really give you a chance to speak and doesn't really note who does actually speak. He doesn't encourage other viewpoints and really only agrees with what he says. Grade is entirely based on participation, a group midterm, and a 10 page final paper.
Make sure you talk in the class, this is the most important thing to do.
I really enjoyed this class. Although, he only graded on a few things- namely participation and your final- it wasn't that hard. So long as you showed up, and read the texts and had something to say, you'll be fine. Lectures were funny. 10/10 would recommend
I enjoy this professor a lot but I know a lot of students that did not like him. The assignments are one 2 pg essay, midterm group paper, 10pg final. How to get an A: -write on his blog at least once a week (you'll understand if you take the class) -Talk at least once per class -Send him your papers for him to check and comment on
Worst professor I've ever had by far. He is incredibly egotistic and cares nothing about student success. He's one of those professors that actually believe that a B is doing excellent in his class and won't bat an eye to giving you a C. Don't take the class unless you want to ruin your GPA in college.
Best professor I ever had. He really knows how to think, he really knows how to engage students' minds through unique reading assignments, meaningful discussion, and creative activities. He really helped me take exciting risks with my writing. I ended up taking several classes from him.
Brian is a nice guy, but I wouldn't take a class from him again. He says grades are based on participation, but there aren't a lot of chances to speak up in class. Make sure to write on the blog at least once a week and this term we only had one graded assignment: the final paper.
I took the online version of one of his lectures and he was little to no help for the whole semester. He just expected us to follow a personal blog and read 70-80 page articles at random times. He was very disorganized and the two assignments we did have he was very harsh with grading.
I would not recommend taking his class. I took his class online and I didnt learn much. There are too many reading discussions but there is never a due date. You are only graded on 4 things and he grades extremely hard. He will call an assignment a kindergarten assignment then give you a B. Save yourself and your GPA. Maybe hes better in person.
Lots of works assigned as expected in the class, but final is incredibly difficult and long. 10 Page single spaced essay on an topic assigned by him makes it hard to work on other classes at the same time. Don't take this class if you are expecting hard finals for other classes.
LOTS of readings in class, with discussions for each. No due dates for discussions, assigned at seemingly random dates. No structure. Discussions impersonal and overly professional. On the flip side he responded to every top-level post if you did it within a reasonable timeframe. Slow grader, I've still not received my final grade for Spring 2021.
This professor was simply one of the hardest grading professors I have ever dealt with. The course was simply the more boring online course I have ever taken due to the multitude of readings. His final project was 10 pages long for a freshmen-level course. During discussions, he would often attack students' arguments as if they were personal.
The class is discussion-based with a lot of readings. You do readings for each class, and sometimes there will be 2 or 3, up to 50 pages for each reading. The discussions weren't super interesting, and most of the time you listened to Brian talk the whole time. You also only have a few assignments - which he grades really harshly on.
The class is titled "Magic & Technology," but it's more of a philosophy class. And while Brian has a lot of interesting ideas, he's not the best teacher. Every class has participation earning discussions based on new very long readings every class, but Brian talks through 80% of each. He also treats anyone who doesn't get his viewpoint as an idiot.
If you are an average student, PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! The whole class is focused around long and meaningless readings. The in-class discussions of the usually 50 page readings account for a large portion of your grade. Brian talks for most of the discussions, agreeing only with opinions that fit his views and dismissing everything else.
Every class is just a discussion on some readings he assigns, but it often diverts into different conversations. The readings are difficult but you can find something to contribute to the class discussion, even if it's just a personal experience. He really cares about participation, so just try to say something once every class and you'll be okay.
It is supremely important that you participate in class. Complete the readings, try to answer questions in class, and ask for feedback during the assignments. The few assignments are relatively straightforward, however the 10 page final essay can seem daunting. Be prepared for class to get super weird and super awkward.
Brian Kubarycz is unconventional. If you are conventional you will most likely have a difficult time in his class. He's challenging. You can literally feel new brain cells growing. Participate and speak up in class. Do the readings beforehand. If he understands your personality by the end of the course, you will probably get an A.
Was not very sure what his expectations were from me the whole semester as everything was up in the air. I work better with structure, but some people don't, so if you do not like structure take him. His unconventional teaching style was very interesting and fun but I was confused a lot of the times. Be prepared for him to go on tangents.
This class is fine, however, Brian commonly insults class intelligence levels and acts as though no one knows anything. Readings are dense and oftentimes posted slightly last minute. He's a very picky grader as well. He's a cool guy, the class structure is just disorganized and he holds everyone to a high standard even though he doesn't convey it.
Brian's class will challenge you, but he will also push you to grow and to think critically about what you are doing/what you were reading. His class does get frustrating at times, as sometimes it does not match the course description and sometimes it is hard to get a word in during discussions. This class was truly a college experience.
He is an amazing professor but his criteria can be a bit confusing. I would suggest utilizing his office hours and participating in online discussions because you will not get much of a word in person. He is very knowledgeable but he sometimes goes on tangents. There is a lot of required reading but he does not quiz you on material however.
Brian is a walking stereotype of an elitist academic that dogs on worldviews that are not his own, but acts as though everyone shares them. Texts are great, discussions are tiresome.
Although I have so far little experience with other professors at the U (I have just finished my first semester here), he is my favorite professor BY FAR!!! He does everything right: Outstanding (Dare I say Magical) Lectures Gives Considerate and Incredibly Thoughtful Feedback Easy Expectations Super Fun (Optional) Field Trips 10/10 Life Changing
He has been THE most impactful instructor I have ever had He has helped me form a self-identity He was made to teach honors courses It is not required to attend or to do the readings however you should do both Ideas coming from the readings rather than the facts He fosters community that is interested in the world I WANT to take more of his classes
You can succeed in this class as long as you cater to Brian's ideas and act as though you agree with everything he says. Be ready to listen for an hour straight as he rambles and gets sidetracked, talking about anything BUT the assigned reading. The readings are long and boring, lectures are under-stimulating, and Brian is repetitive.
This guy is crazy but in the best way possible. He'll bring up weird topics but always does it respectfully and in an engaging manner. I loved this class and learned a lot of random things I did not know before, and for that, I wil always be grateful. There is a lot of readings for this class, but they are all interesting. 10/10 would take again.
Lots of reading, it's not super organized either so you'll have 50 pages for 2 days and 2 pages for 4 days. He's good at giving lectures but I found majority of the content boring. He wasn't a super harsh grader, he gave A's if you submitted the assignment, despite getting all 100% my final grade was an A- somehow.
Professor Kubarycz's class is unconventional but engaging. Prepare to be challenged and have your thinking expanded. Complete the readings, participate actively, and leverage tools like unstuckstudy for study prep - it'll pay off with an A.
