he took a subject that was, from what i heard from everyone who had taken the class boring, and applied it to situations wherewe'll actually use what we learned. That was key for me. With 3 diff sections, he still learn probably 85% of the students names, and was always open for Q's during or after class. if you get the chance, take this from him
Great guy. Strived to learn everyone's names. Generally liked to be there it seemed. Strived to be fair, related to the student life, made me love Finance! Definately go for Brian Lane if you have the chance.
Very good prof. Actually cared if you were learning. Had a lot of material to cover, but he did well pointing out what you need to know. I would definately recommend him.
Brian's a beauty. He's very approachable and makes the class interesting by applying the concepts to real life past experiences that he has had in his professional career. I would definately reccommend taking a class from him!
Spectacular teacher. Really knew his stuff and wanted everyone else to gain from the experience of that class. He never tried to force his opinions on us though, always encouraging us to think for ourselves. Definitely would recommend him.
Once you get past Brian's quirky teaching style you will find him calm and very helpful. He tells stories that help relate the material to real life. His expectations are clear and you always know what will be on exams. Go to class and work on practice problems and you should do fine on the exams.
Very helpful, the best finance prof I have ever had
Nice enough guy,but he's VERY unclear. Expects you to know every term he does. His markers make alot of mistakes so keep in an eye out for that. Just an awful class. Reminded me of Math 121
Very good prof that keeps the classes attention with jokes and questions. Very easy to talk to and ask questions. Exams are short but you must know your stuff or you will not do well
I am kind of just waiting for Brian to loose it on our class.I think he is an incredibly moody guy.But he responds to emails, midterms were a little unpredictable. He has a rep for teaching really fast and if your not paying attention to his every word.. he may teach a concept and you could totally miss it! But he is whilling to help you out so.
Very good teacher. Lectures straight from overheads and it complimetns the textbook very well. Always around for help during office hours and very willing to help. Would try and take another class from him
Lectures are realy fast. Assignments and exams are hard. There is a lot of material to cover. Make sure you do the readings prior to class or you will fall asleep and do poorly.
He really knows his material but he almost knows it TOO well. Lectures cover loads of material. Not the most approachable professor either. And tries hard to be funny with finance jokes -- they're not funny. Assignments and exams were really tough as well.
This class was interesting, but I am not a finance person per se. Really great prof. Brian is so nice, he always will take time to help you and always says "hi" in the halls. I have had him for all my finance courses and did okay in them, but really liked him as a prof.
Excellent prof. Nice guy, very approachable
Excellent professor, made very difficult material interesting. Creates a friendly class environment that facilitates learning and discussion.
He knows his stuff! Very helpful makes class easy not to fall asleep although he does go off on tangents. I took this as a summer class and any finance questions I have. I ask him cause he's friendly and helpful! Take Brian for any finance class you can
Nice guy, be aware that tests are highly weighted towards theory. If you think you're going to be doing alot of calculations for long answer your wrong. Basically all paragraphs short answers and long answers on his tests. Good class, lots of things everyone should know
Very good prof. Knows his stuff and makes a concerted effort to help his students. Approachable outside of class. Assignments and exams had a lot of bite to them though. Overall I would take from him again.
Brian was a very helpful professor. If you needed any help outside of class he was more than willing. He also had office hours every day of the week which helped with busy schedules! Overall Brian made finance rather interesting!
Brian is an amazing prof. He is extremely kind and approachable. Definitely cares about his students and wants to see you succeed. For sure recommend taking his class!
Great prof. Explains the material well. Realizes finance isn't very exciting. Very approachable and helpful. Definitely recommend him!
Brian is one of the most genuine professors Edwards has. A really good guy, but tough subject matter so make sure to go to class and study the material beyond class time.
One of Edwards' sharpest, clearest professors. Great to learn from, but a real stickler for the right way to do things. Will help you succeed, and offers sympathy, but cuts you no breaks. You will earn every mark you get, and fail if you don't put in the work.
Very good prof! His lame jokes were funny and he is a very personable guy, made class interesting and relevant to the real world. Always willing to help. Calculation question types covered in class (excel) Exams are split between theory and calculations -usually theory in the written section (define nominal interest, du pont identity etc).
God Bless Brian Lane.
Brian Lane is a true gem in Edwards School of Business. He is clear, and concise ( lots of material in one lecture). Even though I don't particularly enjoy Finance, I found it interesting and fun with Prof Lane. His jokes are actually pretty funny too. And to top it all of, he's adorably handsome! :)
Quite a tough class. Takes a lot of studying and practice. I found he went through the material too fast, but there was a lot to learn! The textbook accompanying the class is AWFUL. So unclear. Brian's a good guy though, tough course but a pretty good prof. Go to class. It's a lot harder to catch up if you don't. (I know from experience).
Great prof. Good sense of humour, even if people don't always laugh at his jokes. Fantastic. 10/10 would recommend.
Fantastic professor. Very intelligent, articulate, and understanding. Does his best to make a difficult class as engaging and understandable as possible. Exams are very fair and fully test your comprehension of the course so long as you've attended class regularly and put in the work outside. Brian's a great professor and would highly recommend him
Brian Lane is the epitome of what all teaching staff should be. He is so intelligent, and it shows. However, he does understand that everyone isn't at his level, and explains very well without being even slightly condescending. Take the class, do the problem questions, and make sure you attend his classes. His jokes are pretty funny too!
Attend every class - easy 5% Start preparing for midterms at least one week in advance. Must do practice questions, don't wait last minute! Try read ahead before class so you don't feel lost. Receive marks back for assignments, tests and finals the next day or your money back. Awesome professor, definitely take this course with Brian Lane!
Brian made this class super enjoyable, and quite easy if you attended all the lectures. Assignments were right out of class examples, and attendance is a free 5%. 2 Midterms - but they were incredibly easy. If you need a good mark in finance, take 203 with Brian!
Brian is an excellent prof and teaches a difficult class very well. his jokes are also hilarious. Highly recommend.
Brian is an excellent prof and teaches a difficult class very well. his jokes are also hilarious. Highly recommend. Also lets you use a cheat sheet for exams in his 203 class.
One of the only profs I have ever checked off to nominate for a teaching award. Somewhat dry sense of humor is much appreciated; definitely cares about his students. Lecture slides are essentially the textbook condensed - may have to do a bit of extra reading, but rarely. Marks fair, midterms are easy/average and final is fairly average as well.
Ask questions, he is very helpful.
A very middle of the road professor. Clear and concise lectures and tests are on the tough side.
Brian is the best! Super nice guy willing to help out of class and marks very fairly on his tests/assignments. Lots of dad jokes and does his best to make a dry class tolerable. Definitely recommend.
Brian is one of the best profs I have had at Edwards so far. His lectures are organized, he's a fair grader, and his midterms are relatively easy. Take Brians class over any other prof!
Brian is okay, but he goes over topics way too quickly and doesn't explain examples very well, like at all. I found myself having to teach myself most topics. He has dry humour which is funny the first time, but not after he says it 10 more times in the term. The only good thing was that he gives marks for showing your work.
Flies through his slides. Chooses quantity over quality. Doesn't explain examples at all. Will start a new chapter with 3 minutes left in class.
He goes WAY too fast. I might as well just get a tutor to explain everything that he is not explaining... which would be all by the way. I'm sorry, but not all of us are finance experts yet.
if you want to know what's going on with the subject, don't take it from him.
I sincerely regret taking this class with this prof. If given the opportunity, do not take any classes with this prof.
Absolutely the worst prof I've had in ESB, especially for a hard class.
I don't know how anyone can say he is good to be honest
really generous marker.. have to learn a lot on your own
Absolutely hate his class. Strongly recommend taking this class from anyone else.
His class is awful, tries to get through his slides as quick as possible with as little explanation as possible. Doesn't explain the examples at all, just assumes everyone already knows everything. Worse professor I've ever had.
Horrible horrible class. Would not take another class from him again. Avoid if possible.
Lazy teaching skills. Doesn't show steps in his examples at all, just shows the end result. Doesn't explain his slides either.
Awful! 2 months into his class and I feel like I haven't learned a thing from him!
The most god awful professor I've ever had. AVOID!
Horrible teacher, would not wish his class upon my worst enemy.
Should spend less time making dumb repetitive jokes and spend more time on teaching.
This class gave me anxiety.
Tough class, but if you listen properly to his lectures and immediately address anything you don't understand, it's nothing you can't handle. If you like dad jokes, this man is for you. He knows his stuff and is very professional in his teaching methods. His expectations are clear and he always posts the solutions to exams and assignments.
His exams ARE NOT an accurate representation of what has been learned in class. Exam questions contain content not covered in class. The content covered in class is not on the exams.
Very knowledgeable about the subject, always professional, and gives clearly lectures with matching slides. Patient and helpful in or out of class. Note: going to class is not enough to do well, you must read the textbook and do the practices. If you do, you can do very well (this class has straightforward right/wrong answers, no ambiguity)
Great prof, and great sense of humour. Very passionate about finance
Brian is an extremely fair professor. His lecture style is a little dry but keep an ear peeled for his dry humour and it will get you through. Read the textbook as it complements his in class material well.
Liked Brian a lot, he uses lots of examples and the class was easy to follow. The grading system he used didn't really work well. If you're not a good student you should be able to get good marks. Overall he's one of the better professors I've had at U of S.
Brian Lane is such a great professor. His breadth of knowledge in his field is inspiring and his use of humor in his lectures makes long classes enjoyable. He taught practical knowledge and skills which I found very valuable. His in class questions and assignment questions along with the textbook questions were a good preparation for the exams.
Great professor overall. Best MBA class I've had so far by a wide margin. If there was one comment I would have liked it to be a bit more in-depth. I understand that the time constraints make it difficult, but for a masters level class at times the concepts felt too basic.
Assignments and quizzes were very easy and may lull you into a false sense of security leading into the exams. The exams will be a very tight time crunch and you need to either start with the long answer or budget appropriate time, as they are worth 4x more than the multiple choice questions yet each question is similarly as time consuming.
I enjoyed Brian Lane's class. It definitely wasn't easy, I had to really work to do well but the professor was engaging and wanted students to understand and do well.
Brian is the best professor! He's humor makes a relative dry financie class intersting. He's always well prepared with the slides and excel spreedsheet. He responds fast with detailed answers with emails. This is the second time I took his class. If there's more I definately would take more from him. I chose the course COMM 203, its actually MBA825
Brian is an excellent professor. If you take the work seriously you can learn alot. He also makes himself very available for extra help if you need it. However, he writes very tough exams so be well prepared and work the hardest textbook problems you can.
Professor Brian Lane is worthy of respect and admiration not only for his intellectuality but also for his great teaching skills and the way he cares to make efforts for student's lecture comprehension and application. He makes these stuffs as much easy to understand as possible. As long as you try your best in studying, everything will work out.
experienced, understanding, meticulous, open to feedback and discussions, humorous, and often rates his own humor on a humor scale; very organized in giving lectures, assignments, and quizzes; understands the balance between hard work, smartwork, and fun in life. ends the class before the scheduled time; handles drifting off-topic discussions well.
Brian Lane teaching style is slightly above average. He makes jokes, he tries to make students engaged, and he does teach a few things. Unfortunately, I never felt I had to go to his lectures to do well in the course. The textbook explanations are good and Brian usually doesn't add anything that requires taking notes. Overall, better than average.
Best professor in Edwards School of Business. Not even close.
Great prof, really cares about students. Tries his best to make the subject matter interesting. If you don't go to class you need to read the textbook.
Brian is an absolutely fantastic professor! He is knowledgeable about what he teaches, has such a great sense of humour and obviously loves finance. I'm glad that I chose this class as I learned a lot and enjoyed the lectures. The class was low-stress; attending lectures and listening to what Brian talks about is the key to succeeding in the class.
If he is rude to you, don't worry. He is rude to everybody
Brian is by far my favourite finance prof. When you speak with him during his office hours he is always very helpful and easy to understand. Brian is engaging to listen to during class and is always willing to do lots of examples and answers questions. If you get the chance, definitely take one of his classes!
Brian Lane is your best bet for this class. A very difficult class, but he does an exceptional job of explaining topics. Assignments are great mark boosters if you put time into them, and you are for sure gonna want this mark boost because the midterms are just tough. Attend class because he gives lots of direction for exams and assignments.
Brian Lane is an absolute saint. Finance is a VERY hard class, but I wouldn't take it with anyone else. I genuinely feel smarter after listening to his lectures. Midterms are tough so study good. I didn't miss a single class because listening to Brian teach makes such a difference in understanding the concepts. Assignments are mark boosters.
He is a very nice guy, the problem is how he structures his class. He gives direction to succeed on the assignments and exams, but the questions on both have its difficulty exponential increased compared to examples in class. Just makes no sense on why he does this. Both midterm averages were low.
He did an amazing job clearly explaining a tough subject. One of the best professors I've had so far.
COMM 203 is a really heavy course. Brian did a really good job explaining difficult topics. Be ready to spend a lot of extra time outside of class on practice questions if you want to receive a good grade. Tests are pretty difficult and Assignments are time consuming but help wrap your head around topics.
Brian is one of the best profs I've had yet. The assignments are rather easy, midterms are tough so study hard for them! It is important to tend lectures as attendance is taken & Brian goes through quite a few examples during the class. Also shows you real life examples. Very sincere prof that cares about his students.
Brian is a great prof. Finance is a hard class and he tries his best to help you understand it. The assignments are fair, but the midterms are hard and you have to prepare for them and stay on top of the course work. Overall I would recommend Brian to friends .
Brian was a great professor but his midterms are very tough. The assignments are not a good guideline in what to expect on the tests. The midterms are worth a substantial amount compared to other classes. He is a great guy and his lectures are interesting but he teaches a tough subject. Would recommend for a finance class.
Brian somehow makes finance seem entertaining with his many dad jokes. However, the exams were very difficult compared to the excel sheet we used in class. Would recommend Brian, but would let them know that it is a heavy course.
Definitely one of the heavier classes of second-year business. Brian finds a way to make his lectures fun and exciting for such a dauntingly difficult course. He does tend however to skip over a lot of variations of problems that tend to show up on the exams. Great teacher, but setting aside a decent amount of time for the class is super important.
Brian Lane himself is an exceptional human being. The class however, is pretty hard if you don't plan on taking any finance classes after it. The assignments are nice grade boosters, but the midterms were hard. Get ready to work and study hard if you want a good grade because you will be disappointed if you don't. As a lecturer though, he's great!
Brain Lane is a very nice professor, although this course is extremely heavy for an introduction course. The examples on excel are helpful in real life, but DEFIANTLY does not help on exams; if anything, it makes the class that more confusing. The questions on the exam are moderately harder than the ones in class, but he gives partial marks.
Brian really cares about finance as his dry humour displays. Used excel for all of examples, he didn't teach us how to write out the problems for exams unless you have a financial calculator which isn't mandatory. Overall, LOTS of content covered. Worst class I have taken in all of my university experience. Avoid.
Brian is very knowledgeable on the subject. He is one of the best finance profs at this uni. He is very clear with material be ready to do a lot of practice outside of class you will suffer if you do not. He is open to meeting outside class as well. Overall would def take a class with him again ( I did not do amazing as I didnt spend a lot of
You really need to dive deep into the course practice questions to fully understand the material, there are practice problems in class but most require more time. Financial calculator highly recommended, can't imagine doing this course without it.
Brian was a great professor. Finance is a very hard course, however Brian made it more bearable with a stellar sense of humour. Assignments are easy marks if you put some time into them. Midterms are very tough, about half theory and half calculations, so be sure to know the theory just as well. Overall, would highly recommend Brian as a professor.
Clearly describes concepts. One of the best finance professors you will find.
Brian is an awesome guy and you can tell he loves what he does. however, he does teach this class like it is an upper year course meaning lectures are very heavy, moves on quickly, and he expects you to understand. His tests were very fair and the assignments were super hard. Good prof but even better man
Whatever he says is on the midterm do not study you will waste your time to find out only 1 out of the 10 things he says is actually on it. His tests are extremely difficult compared to his in class questions. Using excel for problems does not help on exams because we do not know the step we only know the "functions". Felt very rushed the whole tim
Really nice guy but good luck to anyone thinking this class is gonna be a mark booster. Very difficult exams and a very rushed class. By far the hardest class of 2nd year BComm
Great guy, very funny, and apparently well respected however, his exams make no sense. His long answer are majority theory based where as his lectures are entirely math based. His multiple choice are the hardest thing Ive ever done in my life. Feels like hes giving you questions with missing values so you cant work out the formulas he teaches.
Easy to follow along in class, throws in the classic dad joke. Assignments are time consuming and often tedious for marks. Midterms and final had difficult short answers. They weren't similar to what was taught in class or seen in the textbook so you have to understand things pretty well to apply it in the test. Can be tricky, but use what you know
Super helpful. Challenging class, but committed to helping students succeed and work through.
Highly recommended Professor. Very respectful, humble, great sense of humour. Great presentation delivery given dry content. Reading the text book would be helpful but understanding will be learned by doing the spreadsheet work in class.
Brian was a fantastic professor and made complex material accessible. He used real-world examples, things that he encountered and things he's read about, to illustrate points.
Brian Lane was a sweetheart! He is charismatic, caring, funny, and really helpful! He made this class so fun and enjoyable! I definitely would take a class with Brian Lane.
Brian is a great professor. He makes difficult topics easy to understand. He provides plenty of examples to illustrate the concepts. He uses humour to lighten the atmosphere in the class. I will highly recommend him.
This course was taken during the self-isolation period of Covid-19. Brian transitioned his whole class to an online format in a very short period of time and created a great alternative format. His use of jokes helped ease students into the new learning environment, which is saying something considering he never received laughter.
"Ravishly handsome" as professor Brian said himself in a lecture. Professor Brian is an intelligent professor who teaching and his students first. He goes over many examples in class and is available after class too. He is entertaining to listen too as his lectures are packed with finance-related jokes. I highly recommend taking professor Brian.
Brian Lane is a great prof. He cares about students, puts in a lot of time and effort and is always available for questions. The class is very content heavy and requires a lot of outside practice. Practice the questions as much as you can, the midterms can be really hard. Overall, I recommend taking professor Brian
Brian was an awesome prof! Tests and assignments were very fair. Do some practice questions from each chapter before a test and youre golden! Awesome guy who loves what he does and wants to see students do well!
Brian tried to make lectures (online) funny, but there was little engagement I felt too much time was spend on this. When asked questions, outside of class, I found his responses terse and not always helpful - assuming you did no work to find the answer on your own. He is very clear about how difficult this class can be. Expectations were managed.
He is a good teacher, if you have to take 203 I recommend taking it with him. Easy to follow material and the class itself is hard but thats uni for you.
Material and concepts are relatively simple to understand, the only difficult part of the class is the small amount of time allotted for exams for an excess amount of questions, that result in lower class averages and grades. Additionally, short answers are marked pretty heavily for a text book that does not do a good job of explaining concepts
Although I did a lot of practice, I did not do well for this class. But Prof. Lane is so far one of my favourites. He is very nice. He always promptly replies to your email and provides help for assignments & exercises. Make sure you attend his lectures; he'll give you a lot of hints to do the tests and guide you through his useful spreadsheets!
My guy, Professor Lane; a true legend in the USask Finance department. Many a class did we receive advice on picking up individuals of the opposite genders with our BA II Calculators. In all seriousness, Professor Lane is severely underappreciated. I could not recommend him enough! His moves with the BA II Plus? Irresistible. Mr. Lane is a true gem
he is a great prof! willing to help always, content are understandable and relevant
Brian actually cares about his students and it really shows. For online classes, he always made cheesy jokes to try to keep everyones attention. He's actually a little funny but don't tell him that. His tests and assignments are extremely fair! All around just a great prof!
Brian is an absolute gem. The jokes he makes during his lectures really help keep your attention! Assignments are all rooted right from the in-class examples and his exams arent too hard. He obviously cares about students. Head and shoulders above the other finance profs at Usask!
He makes a challenging class enjoyable with his humour and good explanations. Brian cares about his students and he is very receptive to questions. The textbook is very useful. Don't let the course material get away on you.
Brian is excellent. Very nice and genuine guy. Shares a lot of stories that help you relate to the content. Brian knows the content well and was always very inviting and accessible. Content is fairly easy and the course is a good time.
Took an online class. Grading was clear and he usually covered material similar to assignments in the WebEx class so it was easy to do the assignments. Lectures were short and clear. MT were okay. Gives good examples and plenty dad jokes.
Brian is an amazing prof! I would highly recommend taking a class with Brian if you get the chance. He simplifies course content to make it easily understandable for students. Reading the textbook is important in his class. Overall just a good guy who cares about his students and wants to see them succeed.
This was my second class I've had with Professor Lane. The working excel sheet he uses throughout the class was helpful. Be ready to read the textbook. The assignments are helpful and the tests are what you would expect if you do the assignments. Do those and you will do good in the class. Professor Lane is a great teacher with good humor.
Professor Lane is an excellent teacher. He is very knowledgeable and does a great job of explaining complex topics. I took this class online and the lectures were well done and he worked through lots of examples in our live class. He has a strong affinity for the "Dad joke" which added some humor to the tricky concepts we were learning. A+
great prof
Provides multiple types of mediums during the lecture which greatly enhances understanding of the concepts.
Interesting lectures, engaging and helpful. Textbook and course material brought together concepts well and quizzes and assignments helped to tie up loose ends. Great Course
Brian is the best prof in my MBA journey so far. He has made financial concepts easier to understand and he cares and understands difficulties that people with non-financial backgrounds might have in the class. Wonderful prof.
Professor Lane cares about his students and does everything he can to explain the difficult concepts in as many ways needed to get them to stick. He keeps the lectures fun with his sense of humor and makes sure to cover the necessary items. By far one of the best professors I have ever had and one of the best in the MBA program.
Brian Lane's been the best professor in the MBA program. He's prepared, diligent, funny, and caring. His in class examples, matched with quizzes and assignments help prepare you for your midterm and final exam. It's a lot of work to stay with the pace, but the retention is higher.
He is a great professor although there was a lot of content and very less time so I guess that was real issue.
Very entertaining lectures with enjoyable humor. Lots of textbook readings, but that is just the nature of the course. Would highly recommend Brian to students at all levels of their study.
He is awesome!
Makes good use of examples in a structured way to guide how to work through problems and cover many aspects of the topic from a few angles. Easy to talk to, willing to dive into any topic with the class and explore it.
Brian Lane is a great teacher to learn from for anyone who wants to have a fun and educational class
Brian is a funny, engaging, and caring professor. His lectures are clear and easy to follow and assignments/quizzes are very fair. Best Professor at Edwards School of Business for sure!
Professor Lane is an excellent human being who puts great effort into making classes engaging and enjoyable even when only 8 people show up! The course is not too heavy with work but his marking seems really subjective and it's sometimes hard to decipher what the difference between your work and his suggested answers was.
Brian had a great course. He was very accommodating with online assignments and tests during covid, and managed to make those assignments and test still very practical and fair. He treats his students with a great deal of respect and is very clear during his lectures. I have very much enjoyed his course and would take it again.
great professor
Lane is very caring and evidently cares about the success of his students. Assessments were fair, albeit on the longer side, and the Excel working copy was a great resource for assignments and exams. The textbook is definitely a resource to be used here. Pay attention during both the lecture portion and mathematical portion and you'll be just fine.
One of the best profs at u of s. Speaks and explains topics clearly
Brian is a good professor. He really tries to keep students engaged. He relates to material using real world example which helps understanding better.
Brian is an awesome professor. He does an incredible job of keeping the class entertaining and provides lots of help and resources. Would take from again.
Very good at explaining course concepts and examples. Assignments are a little hard compared to the examples.
Mr. Lane is a good professor. He does his best with what can be at times dry textbook material and tries to incorporate comedy into his lectures, even though his finance jokes don't always land. Attend the lectures and do some practice questions, also using the textbook is essential. The tests are very fair and if you study you'll get a good grade.
He is a great professor and despite teaching more difficult courses he does an amazing job of giving plenty of practice to the questions related to the course. He is also very easy to reach and is very flexible with meeting times if you could not attend office hours. You can tell he really cares about the overall success of his students!
I enjoyed Dr. Lane as a professor just not comm 363 itself. I did not do well in the pre-req comm 203 and that made this class difficult. I wish I had taken 203 with Dr. Lane as he helped my understanding greatly in 363, just not enough as this was a fast-paced spring class. Assignments and tests were fair but I did have trouble on the timed tests.
Brian is one of the best profs I have had one thing that I love is how fast he marks assignments. I took him for a spring class and our last assignment was due a day before the final. He had the assignment back in less than 12 hours. 100% would recommend to anyone and am planning on taking him for 429 as well
The in-class work excel is the most important material you need to practice with throughout the whole course. You can do well on most of his calculation questions if you are familiar with what is presented in class. However for the definition and short answer questions you need to go through the textbook.
Professor Lane's lectures are very easy to listen to and he has a very kind and entertaining persona. However, he expects a lot from his students and the majority of the learning you do in this class will be on your own time since it is a content heavy course.
Brian is an excellent prof. He explains concepts clearly and goes through lots of examples. Very genuine, down to Earth guy that loves cracking jokes. My dream is to become a successful business executive so that I can phone Brian and tell him about our capital structure and he can relay that info to the class
Professor Lane provided a great explanation of course topics as well as clearly identified course expectations. Would recommend professor Lane.
Professor Lane is a great at teaching the material in a clear and concise way and he is always willing to help if you have any questions about the course material!
Awesome prof. Highly recommend all courses. 2 midterm and final was all online, 2 assignment. Grading was very fair
Professor Lane is among the best at what he does. Clear, concise lectures make for a great learning environment. He'll often ask questions and end up answering them himself if no one participates, but you can tell he really appreciates participation. He's a great professor and an even better person.
Professor Lane is a wonderful professor to have. I hope he teaches more finance courses in the future as his lectures are very engaging and purposeful.
Brian Lane is a great professor. His lectures are enjoyable and he explains examples in great detail. He answers all questions and is accessible outside of class to discuss anything. I would definitely take another class with him!
Great prof he knows how to class engaged. His office hours are really helpful and he explains the answer at the right pace. Would recommend and take again with him.
Hilarious lectures, be ready for tons of dad jokes. Course moves fast but he explains everything in a way that is easy to understand.
Great professor, however, be prepared to get heavily challenged with his teaching style combined with difficult material.
Great and funny prof, class itself was content heavy and you need to spend lots of time studying the material to do well.
Really great professor, jokes that are so bad that they are good. However, be prepared to learn the content quickly and heavily. DO YOUR PRACTICE QUESTIONS! It will save your life in this class.
In order to achieve a good grade and really understand the content you must do some extra practice problems from the text book outside of class. Lectures where entertaining and Professor lane was always happy to explain and answer any questions we had
It's really difficult to stay concentrated and retain everything he says because of how he teaches. Brian's teaching style is very positive, but he can lose his audience very quickly. I recommend always staying one chapter ahead in readings of terms and concepts, and to attempt the first 12 questions from each chapter. He's kind, but not the best.
Professor Lane covers topics quickly. Tests have a bit of a time crunch. The course is heavy, but Prof Lane tries hard to break it down. The assignments are a bit challenging but there is lots of time to get them done and ask questions.
Hate the class but the prof was good
Professor Lane is very kind and funny however Comm203 was a very difficult class with him. The class is very content heavy and he will not be covering all topics in class time. He expects you to read all of the chapters in a textbook of 1700 pages. And you will be tested on all of it with no guidelines or hints of what content will be on the exam.
Lane is an amazing prof that makes a relatively dry topic somewhat interesting. The course is fairly difficult, but Lane is very engaging and always open to help students outside of class hours if needed. He is a great guy who clearly knows his stuff, but be prepared for a fairly tough course with lots of practice questions if you hope to do well.
Good professor but doesn't really know how to keep a class engaged. The subject matter he teaches is tough and the slides he uses get really old by the third class. Study hard and you'll get good marks. He is a good professor who cares about his subject.
This class was heavy, and I did really bad on it, but it was my fault and Brian is a very nice guy. As long as you keep up with the slides and excel sheet, you will do well. He provides lots of examples which is handy is such a math heavy course.
Great professor, very funny "dad" type humor and keeps the classroom environment relaxed and engaging. Brian is a very nice guy and knows his stuff well. Lectures were good and he was approachable. Best thing about his class IMO that helped me out quite a bit was the amount of reference/ practice material he provided. Would recommend him as a prof.
Professor Lane was very nice and fair. He has a funny sense of humour and a very warm and welcoming atmosphere in the classroom. He is very accommodating to students who need help or has questions. While I did struggle a bit with the course, I did enjoy his instruction. I would definitely take another class with him.
COMM 203 is said to be maybe the hardest second-level commerce class. The class was tough. It would be best if you did a lot of work to succeed and keep up to date. Professor Lane makes the lectures fun. He has great dad jokes and is very helpful outside of class time (ask questions!!). Would recommend taking this tough class with him to anybody
I am taking his class remotely and he has been so far a caring and thoughtful professor. He is super accessible outside the classroom and even out of office hours. He is taking extra towards students. Finance was difficult class for me until I joined Prof. Lane class!
Despite the difficult content of the course, Dr. Lane has done an incredible job at making the material understandable and accessible.
Brian is a fantastic professor
Prof Brian is an amazing teacher. His excellent teaching skills will enhance your knowledge if you are from the finance world . If you are not ( like me ) , it will give you the skills to understand and interpret real life finance scenarios. Either way, you will have some retained learnings for sure.
One of the best profs at Edwards
Instrumental professor in his ability to deliver the course and expand on the material.
Brian is a great professor
Professor Lane is amazing! He makes difficult materials much more easier to understand by giving a lot of real life examples. He cares about his students and is always willing to answer any questions you might have whether in class or during office hour or outside class. The way he gives his lectures is quite intriguing. Enjoy this class very much!
Overall a tough class to complete during intersession due to the amount of material. If you have other things going on during this time it may feel as though you don't have enough time to fully grasp most of the concepts. However, if you attend lectures and ask questions professor Lane is there to help you succeed. Take this class with him.
Brian is an amazing professor. The class material is a bit challenging to grasp in the short time frame of a spring course however, Brian is very helpful if you ask him questions. My only complaint is that assignment deadlines are very tight.
explains course material well. 100 recommend
Professor Lane has a heart of gold. He tries to keep his students engaged in a fast-paced, theory- and mathematics-heavy class. He is happy to answer any questions that students may have both in-person and through email. He even realized that he constructed a difficult quiz and made adjustments for the next one accordingly. I would recommend him.
Probably the best prof at Edwards. Explains concepts clearly and in great detail.
Great guy
Very happy with taking class with Professor Lane. He is very knowable and qualified to teach practice application courses with his experience. Always open to answer questions related and unrelated to class. Jokes were high quality.
Great professor, really enjoyed his class.
Great professor who cares for his students. Does examples in class, and shows you how to do all the formulas on your calculator.
Great Proff for such a complicated course
Brian was a great professor and is good at explaining things, would take another class from him.
Brian is a good professor however this class is extremely difficult so make sure you attend classes and read the textbook. He is very helpful and will answer any questions you have. He is very knowledgeable and is a great guy.
Professor Lane is a great educator - he's kind, reasonable, and most importantly, funny!! I didn't particularly excel in this class but I still really enjoyed my time with him. His assignments, quizzes, and tests were certainly fair but challenging. I would definitely take a class with him again.
Great Professor, just attend class and do a fair amount of practice questions and you should receive a fairly good mark
He is a very good professor. The class is tough but he gives you the formula to perform well. I enjoyed his classes.
This is a challenging course but Brian Lane is a great lecturer and a good person. I had lots of fun in this class.
Professor lane was a great professor to have. His lectures were engaging and is easy to understand and communicates concepts well. Not an easy class but would recommend taking it with Mr. lane
Brian Lane did very well at keeping students engaged and I found that his lectures seemed to go by quite quickly. The class is tough and you have to make sure that you are studying and paying attention in class, but Brian wants you to succeed and will do his best to help you. I absolutely recommend him for COMM 203.
Professor Lane cares about his students a great deal. He has office hours everyday, but is also accessible outside those times. COMM 203 is a hard course, but he gives great study tips and encourages students to do practice questions everyday to succeed. If you put in the effort you should do fine in this class.
The course material is fairly heavy and difficult to understand. However professor Lane personality is AMAZING!! He makes sure to stay on top of material, update the answer to assignment, make real life examples. He has a very caring personality and he makes sure to treat everyone equally and with respect.
Brian generally lectures from the front and the slides cover most of the material, but he likes to throw in extra tidbits that are not tested and are useful to know. He moves a bit fast throughout the course, probably around 30% quicker than is comfortable, but he is kind, accessible, and willing to help you.
His lectures are very dry and the course material is difficult.
At the beginning of the course he announced that his class is tough. He was not wrong. He gives very entertaining lectures, complementing the class content with real life examples. He encourages students to practice at home. His tests are difficult so you will need to study a lot to pass the course! I would take another class with this professor.
Comm 203 is an incredibly difficult course and Professor Lane goes quite quickly, however this is not his fault. There is just a lot of content to cover in a short amount of time. Brian cares about his students and is always available if you need help. This class takes a lot of work and the test are very hard but Brian is a great teacher to have.
Professor Lane's passion for finance and personality makes learning fun.
Great prof. Really wants to see his students succeed. His slides tend to be sparse. A good secondary resource I used was the CFI website.
Funny guy (if you like dad jokes)! Genuinely cares about his students and LOVES finance!
Brian is very purposeful in the lectures and readings. He understands that this course has many topics that can be further expanded, but covers the necessary information relevant for the program. There is a great mixture of the topics discussed in class and their relevancy in industry. Brian's great nature makes the class enjoyable to learn!
Great professor!
Brian has a great wealth of knowledge in Corporate Finance. This course can dive into specific areas, however, for the MBA program, it is very fitting and applicable to industry. His teaching style is a relaxed environment. Condensed material in small timeframe so be prepared and attentive and your learning experience will be excellent.
Great professor, very knowledgeable and, can teach proficiently. Difficult on grades but, really makes you understand the material so you're prepared for later courses. If possible, prepare for lectures ahead of time by reading through slides, the textbook and even trying a few problem questions.
Professor Lane is an amazing prof. He makes sure that everyone understands the material and goes through it however many times you want. He is easily accessible out of class. The difficulty is not based on the professor but the difficulty of the class material itself. It is a material heavy class that definitely needs work to be put in.
Professor Lane's COM203 class is a challenge, but his engaging lectures and genuine desire to help students succeed make it worthwhile. Utilizing unstuckstudy AI along with the textbook and class materials is key to mastering the content.
Professor Lane is great at explaining difficult concepts, he takes his time and is very detailed. I highly recommend taking this course with him! You definitely have to attend lectures and do the quizzes and lots of practice problems if you wanna do well, but you learn a lot!!!
The class is somewhat difficult, but Dr. Lane's lectures are great and very helpful for understanding the material if you pay attention. He is very accessible outside of class and is very willing to help after class. He makes lectures more enjoyable with his sense of humor and good attitude. Overall, I would recommend taking this class with him.
This class is the hardest class I will ever have to take in my life!
Brian is a very smart professor, however, he rips through his lectures at Lightning McQueen level speed. His midterms are very hard. Brian is good to take if you are Albert Einstein. If you are not him, take Amarjit Gill for an easier class
I feel professor Lane's teaching pace is too fast to comprehend the material he is lecturing about. I struggle to keep up and miss critical information.
Does not provide you with what will be on the test, just goes over examples in excel and tells you to figure it out yourself with textbook readings and problems.
Very easy to fall behind in this class, do lots of practice problems. Also, please laugh at his jokes, he is very funny.
Professor Lane was the best! Super engaging and made class enjoyable, considering the material itself could be difficult/hard to understand. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but I would highly recommend going to class as Professor Lane does an excellent job at explaining the material and is always available to answer any extra questions.
Professor Lane was one of the best profs I've had. He is extremely good at making the lecture engaging, relating things to current examples, working through practice questions in class, and is super willing to give you any additional help! The course content can be a lot but as long as you go to class and keep up, it is not a difficult class.
A tough course in terms of content, his lectures and class excel will help you succeed in this course.
Brian Lane requires students to spend extensive time practicing problems at home. While I am committed to putting in the necessary effort, solving these problems with limited resources is challenging. The class average was 58% even after a curve, making it difficult to maintain a competitive average for major selection. Lectures are very sparse
His lectures are very fast paced and can be hard to follow at times but he is happy to answer any questions you may have. I found COMM 203 to be a very hard course but if I had to take it again I would want Brian Lane to be teaching me.
if you see these proffessor run oh my semester was in danger because of this guy go and look for another lecturer hard midterms, hard assignments hard everything i hope my exam will be good in Jesus name if you ask him for help with something just know your going back the way you came
Brian is a really awesome guy, and he knows his stuff to a tee. However, his pace is incredibly fast, and he uses Excel for almost everything instead of formulas (you cannot use Excel on midterms and the final). He is accessible, however, and willing to help. The tests are pretty tough. Overall he is a solid professor if you can keep up.
You have to teach yourself so much because there is so much material, he goes quick and it is very hard
Tough class, insane amount of content. Prof Lane goes through lectures way too fast, but can't blame him because we wouldn't complete the course otherwise. I wish he assigned more small assignments to help learn the material as we go. A lot of things would get mentioned once for 5 seconds and then show up on the test. I still enjoyed the class.
COMM 203 is tough with a lot of material to cover in a short time, so you can't blame the prof for moving fast. Lane always told us to review before and after class to understand better. His midterms weren't hard, just concept-based, so cramming doesn't work. Bottom line: you have to study to pass. What else are you supposed to do in school?
He is great in teaching the lecture~
Brian is a great prof who truly cares for his students! The class is somewhat heavy but he makes it as easy as it can be.
Brian covered heavy content over 10 chapters in a 3-week class. He is very naturally gifted at mathematics and teaching and able to make the content relatable. He made sure we didn't fall asleep with some well punctuated dad jokes along the way! What really impressed me about Brian is his authenticity and integrity. Great human being.
He missed a whole page when marking my midterm and accused me of cheating when I pointed it out. Almost refused to explain the midterm format because I was late to class, but gladly helped someone that had missed the whole class. I wanted to take finance as my major but after a semester with him, every other major seemed like a much better option.
He's incredibly spiteful and stops sending out Canvas notifications that include you if you miss class too often. Definitely Mr. High and Almighty.
Brian knowledge is exceptional. He is a well nature human being ,talk to you nicely. The only problem is the way of teaching he choose is very casual, not suitable for undergrad students. He keeps the things very simple in class ,explain concepts with easy question in class or say solve easiest question of book in class and are different in exams.
Well person with exceptional knowledge of Finace but might not a good teacher
Very good, would take again
Brian is a great prof. He is very knowledgeable, and while the course material isn't the most exciting, he does a good job at presenting it. The course doesn't require a ton of homework, and tests aren't terribly hard. Overall, a good experience.
Professor Lane is a good professor. He is very kind and understanding, and has a dry sense of humor that goes unappreciated. His hilarity isn't talked about enough Assignments and tests were fair in difficulty. Study and know the material and you will do well
He knows a lot about the course, but he goes way too fast and has very hard exams.
He was a funny professor who would make jokes in class. The material, however, was mostly self-teaching. For exams, the best you'd get was "look at the Excel problems and take detailed, concise notes from your textbook." Both term tests had low averages. I would recommend taking Amarjit instead.
Great professor who really knows his stuff!
Nice guy, terrible teacher for COMM 203. Punitive towards students who miss class. Exams are unreasonable since he largely uses excel and a financial calculator, but cant use excel on exams and he flies through using the financial calculator which is unhelpful.
run. Do not take him for comm203, he cant teach intro classes, don't trust his rating on here. His lectures are super fast and all of the important math examples in class he does on excel, but excel is not allowed on the tests. You have to spend lots of time outside of class practicing math. The tests were very hard, the class avg was 50-60.
Prof Lane was extremely knowledgeable, and I am sure he would be great for upper year classes. But as a second year intro finance class was not great with him. He would go to fast in lectures, and some things were not explained properly. The exams were extremely difficult compared to examples he would give or recommend to do
Horrible professor. The exams were the hardest exams i have ever taken at the uni level. He tells you to do practice question in the textbook, however the exam problems are nothing like the textbook. He tells you to "look at excel and figure it out". Slides are useless, textbook is useless, both our exams got curved. Take Amarjit. I'm saving you.
Exams are very difficult. Class averages for both midterms were 58 and 63%. Would this not mean that there's an issue with course content and/or delivery? Tells us to use Excel for practice questions but you can't use Excel for exams. Doesn't take time to teach students to use a financial calculator. Barely shows examples by hand, if at all. Awful.
Most difficult class ever
I stopped attending lectures a couple weeks in as they were not useful to me
Prof lane was good! He made it clear that 203 is a hard class that takes lots of reading and effort. Honestly, if you keep up with the material WEEKLY and attend OH once or twice, you are chilling. It's not impossible.
