He's a really funny chem teacher that has great demonstrations during class. He explains things step by step so that it is easy to understand. One of my best profs yet!
I only took chem just for a GE and I was hardly interested in it before I had Leigh. He doesn't bore you in lecture and he doesn't use iclickers so there wouldn't be a reason to go but his lectures are helpful when taking the class. He makes taking the exam somewhat more bearable.
Good professor and a great lecturer. Goes through plenty of examples in class but some test questions come out of nowhere making the exams challenging. You need to be naturally talented at chemistry for an A in this class.
Professor Leigh is an amazing professor. He truly cares about his students and he makes class interesting by doing demonstrations during class and making jokes. He does not use clicker; however, we did have in class quizzes every Thursday. You definitely have to work hard if you want an A in the class but it is not impossible.
Leigh is an amazing professor. I took his his class mostly because I didn't have other choice. However, his lectures are clear and inspiring, and he would give a lot of examples. Textbook and homework are important for you to get an A. He curves the grade. In all: not very hard, amazing demos could happen.
Prof is funny and cares about our progress. Lab reports graded by TAs. Final worth a small portion of class. Final was fair and not hard
Prof Leigh starts every lecture with some chemistry memes pertaining to the material of the day and throws in hilarious quips and puns to keep the class interested. He's very knowledgeable and gives in-depth examples of lab calculations on the class website. Take his class!
Professor Brian is really caring outside out class. Not only that, he always have science related memes on his lecture slides as well as on the midterm and final (YES, on the exam paper). He always threw in puns and jokes while lecturing and that really kept me awake for a 9:00 a.m. class. There are help videos on tritoned so you won't get a F.
Funny professor and overall great guy. Class is podcasted and slides are posted online. He has review sessions for midterms and final. He'll tell you pretty much how to do the lab report (especially for sources of error). Midterm wasn't too bad, but the final was HARD. Still a fantastic professor, and probably my favorite professor at UCSD.
Leigh is by far one of the most helpful professors I have had. He spoon feeds you large portion of the work for the class (esp. the lab reports). But with all that being, you still need to work hard to do well. The final was tough, but thanks to the podcasts, lab manuals and office hours, I was able to review enough to do well.
Brian Leigh is a great professor who truly cares for his students. He is extremely caring and makes himself incredibly accessible outside of class. He goes to the help room to help students in addition to his office hours (going to these saved my grade). Only downside is that the midterm/final was kind of confusing.
Great professor. You can tell he cares a lot about his students. Exams and quizzes have questions similar to the suggested homework problems so make sure to do them.
Just do ALL the homework he gives you and really try to understand it. Go to his office hours for extra help, he's a really cool person that knows a lot about everything. Do your homework, attend class, and you will pass.
Without a doubt the best chemistry professor I've had at UCSD. Dr.B is always trying his best to help his students learn chemistry and makes it fun aswell. Homework is is straight from the textbook and he posts his own solution videos which are very helpful. Homework isn't graded but quizzes are very similar to the homework.
Literally the best chem prof I've ever had. He makes lecture easy to understand. It's absolutely necessary to do the suggested homework problems, but he posts videos working out the solutions which is amazing and super helpful. Doing all the homework is really the only studying you need, quizzes and tests are very fair.
Dr. Leigh was amazing. He is hilarious and tries his best to make Chem 7L both interesting and as easy as possible for his students. His sense of humor makes waking up early worth it. I would definitely take him again!
The lab was pretty easy, and I did alright with all the experiments. His exams are written as though he's never been to this class, though, which isn't ideal.
If you have the chance to take him, please do. He's very inspiring and you can tell he really cares about his students. I took him for Chem 7L. I am not a chem person, but his lectures were amazing and he has a good sense of humor which made me never miss a class even though the course was podcasted and not mandatory.
Professor Leigh is extremely clear on what he expects from our assignments and he made 5-7 help videos on YouTube that took us through the lab reports. Hes funny and you know that he likes to teach. I would recommend taking him if you ever get a chance! My favorite quote from him: Any pizza is a personal pizza if youre brave enough
All around a great guy. He will make you enjoy doing chemistry lab. He pushes you but all the resources are there for you to be successful. Fantastic freshman lab experience.
Professor Leigh makes learning such a pleasure. I personally hate chemistry, but I'm so glad I had him. He was always willing to help students and you can tell he wanted us to learn. I also appreciate how great my TA was. I took this course remotely due to the COVID-19 situation. He gives you what you need for lab reports for the most part.
Prof. Leigh did a great job of adapting to an online format. Lectures were funny and informative. Discussions were CRUCIAL to passing. As long as you read the manuals, take good notes, record your data, and go to/watch lecture you'll be great! Really REALLY loved this class.
Lab reports are a pain because they provide you no specific rubric to help you format your writing. Prof. Leigh has a great sense of humor for putting a lot of memes on his lecture slides. I'd recommend trying taking this class with another friend that work together on lab reports to catch each other's mistake. Prof. Leigh grades very harshly.
Dr. Leigh really knows his stuff and is willing to help students with any problems that may arise. Lab reports are challenging (grading criteria isn't super clear) so make sure to utilize the help room and watch his help videos linked on BB. Overall a great prof. that will push you to think and inquire (fitting for a lab course!).
He really tries to make the lectures interesting with jokes and memes! He's also easy to talk to if you have any questions about the lab or think you were graded wrong. For online classes, his lab videos are helpful for the quizzes and reports but they are long.
Professor Leigh really cares about teaching you chemistry and is always very available, answering emails on holidays and weekends. This dedication is uncommon and he has a great sense of humor. Don't miss out on this chem teacher he is a true gem.
This is a hard class, but Leigh helps make it better. He's super funny, cares a lot about the students, and does his best to make his expectations clear. Very very caring in the time of COVID-19. Final was a group project presentation, which I didn't mind. If you pay attention to the lectures, you've got this class in the bag. Take notes!
He is a really really good professor. He is the only prof I have seen at UCSD that actually has a sense of humor. He is really responsible and good at teaching. He holds lots of extra Office hour which benefits student a lot. However his final is extremely hard and he cancel midterm as well which put big proportion of grade on final. Final is horri
Great overall Professor! His lectures are a mix of humor, science, and real life thoughts. I would advise you to read the lab manuals very carefully before doing the labs. Hes not an easy grader. Also, make sure to send him an email well before you need a response because he probably wont answer you within a few days. Took him for 7L
Amazing professor! He is very understanding of the COVID situation and how it has affected us as students. Would definitely recommend.
Professor Leigh really seems to care about students. He tries to keep lectures entertaining even online. He's accessible outside of classrooms and is approachable during office hours. The course itself is very doable and the grade cutoffs/curves are generous.
Do not take this class over zoom or with Professor Leigh. Although he knows his content this clasS was the worst experience I have had so far at UCSD due to his teaching and grading style.
He is almost impossible to reach outside of class. His TAs are the hardest graders on planet earth. I would often get 100% on the data input and 50% on the template for reasons I never really understood after looking at rubric. Good professor but that harsh grading REALLY messed up my grade
Professor Leigh is a great person. He gave meaningful lectures in this class and the TA's were the sweetest. All of my peers had something nice to say about him. He appreciates participation and loves to hear our opinions on his lectures. Can't wait to have him again for CHEM 7L in the Spring!
Professor Leigh is one of the most caring and enthusiastic professors I've ever had. He's very passionate about teaching and cares deeply about students learning and success. This class is hard, but he provides a ton of resources and support which helps. He was always enthusiastic in OH and never made me feel dumb or silly for any questions I asked
Dr.B is an amazing professor! He's very knowledgeable, funny and honest. His lab is very difficult, but if you watch the lectures and pay very close attention to what you're doing in the lab reports you'll be fine. Labs are mandatory and study for the post lab quizzes. Overall, I'd highly recommend this class even during remote learning.
Professor Leigh is genuinely a great professor and shows substantial compassion for students and their progress. Being a lab class, grading criteria is tough and be prepared to work hard on assignments. However, Professor B does a great job making time and availability for extra help and supplemental instruction.
Amazing professor, best Ive had in the chemistry department, and though I had him for CHEM7L during the pandemic (so online class), it doesnt make him any less proficient at what he does. He truly cares and has inspired me to do a lot more than what I initially intended at university in terms of research. Very easy to reach out to..
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. Professor Leigh seems like a great person, he is funny and is passionate about chemistry, but I did not find him as a great professor. His grading is very specific and sometimes seems impossible. I genuinely felt like I tried my best and I still did bad on labs even afters spending DAYS on them.
Professor Leigh is a pretty tough professor.
Professor Leigh is generally a very nice person willing to help those that ask for help, but this class was extremely difficult with him as the professor. I genuinely tried very hard to meet and exceed what was expected for lab reports, but was unable to get the grades I wanted on them. He is a great person, but not the best professor :(
Professor Leigh acts like a cool guy, only for the labs to be graded harshly and the midterm and finals extremely hard. He is aware that people will get low grades on the exams, but he does curve them. Lectures are not mandatory, but he does walk through what to write on lab reports so watch the recordings when the time comes. Not my favorite prof
He is amazing in delivering the material for the most part. He is funny and really inspires students in doing chem. YOU SHOULD KNOW: The lab reports are graded by TA's, not him. So the guidelines are by the department. Accept it and try to learn from it (go to Gradescope and read every comment, submit a regrade request if you feel like it)
Do not ever take this class with Professor Leigh. While he is a nice person, he and his TA's are the by far the hardest graders I've ever experienced. Grading is very inconsistent and it's impossible to get a decent grade on lab reports because they find the smallest thing missing and dock a ton of points for it. Tests are very hard as well.
Go to lectures and all but still do terrible on the midterms, follow exactly what they want for the lab report and the Tas that grade it are still so nitpicky and give you a low score. Almost impossible to exceed in this class. Professor himself is kind and funny but the class needs more structure for the grading scene with the TAs.
Midterm and final extremely difficult. Lab reports are graded extremely hard, but that being said Professor Leigh is a great guy and an understanding professor. The class has a big curve. Expect to spend 10-15 hours per week in this class tho, but I think its probably the same for other profs anyway.
Professor overall is a nice guy, but the strict grading and lack of preparation for tests makes it difficult for a high grade. The labs themselves are difficult, then the lab reports you have little to no guidance when meeting their expectations, so it is very easy to loose a lot of points. Tests he says you are expected to fail, but a big curve.
awful person and professor. lectures are confusing and assignments are way too harshly graded. hes the type of professor to think his class is the only important class in the world. he's also the type of professor that literally doesn't care what issue your going through because his lab reports mean more.
Prof. Leigh's lectures are very interesting, and they are helpful to get ready for the exams. The exams themselves are very intensive, but he gives a generous curve. The lab reports are not very forgiving, so you need to write as many words as possible to hit his rubrics. The oral quizzes are hard, so taking online doesn't mean a lot easier.
Dr. B is a very caring and accessible prof, but he makes the class more difficult and tedious than it needs to be. There is no clear grading criteria for lab reports and the final exam is difficult. It is possible to succeed in this class by working hard and completing all assignments to the best of your abilities. Overall would recommend.
Professor Leigh was definitely a nice guy but this class is much harder than it needs to be. Contents are all easy but lab reports and oral quiz are so harshly graded. Went to tons of office hours and help rooms but still don't know what they expect me to write in those reports and got points knock off everywhere.
Prof Leigh is SO MUCH FUN. Having come over from 7L he made lecture so much fun, and lectures in a very understandable manner. Discussion problems and homework isn't the EASIEST but the tests compensate by making them extremely straightforward and similar to lecture problems. If you understand the basic content, you will perform well in this class.
I think I would have really enjoyed this class if it wasn't standardized to every other chem class. If you find out your class is standardized, look at Schurmeier's rating to see what you're getting into. In terms of Leigh as a professor, he was pretty good. He moves a mile a minute, but he has a sense of humor, so he has that going for him.
Dr. Leigh is my favorite professor at UCSD. He genuinely cares so much for his students learning. He sets aside a lot of time to help students and is very reachable. He is very proficient in the material and tries to teach the subject in a very understandable and easy manner. I definitely recommend.
Of course this class had to get standardized the quarter I take it. I tried to hard to run away from any chem class taught by stallings or schurmier but obviously I got caught up in it again. All the tests and lecture and entire class format is based on stallings'. Which is literally horrible. Tests are only multiple choice, final worth 70% ofgrade
Condescending, tries to be funny when he's not, and a harsh grader. I would work my ass off in lab and for my lab reports and literally get C's and one D on the reports. It's really unfair to get a non-passing grade when you go to every lab and really try on the lab reports. Definitely seems like he gets a kick out of having power over students.
Lab reports were graded so harshly it was hard to succeed after spending hours and hours perfecting them. There is a midterm and a final for this lab class on paper, which is kind of odd and extra for all the constant work there is for the class. He was an okay professor, but I think the pacing was too fast.
Avoid. Condescending to students when they ask clarifying questions. It just feels like his heart isn't really in it. His labs are graded very harsh, and he admits in lecture that he expects students to do poorly on upcoming assignments and that they were "designed that way". I have put in a lot of time and work into this class, yet am struggling.
A huge amount of points were taken off the lab report despite working really hard to perfect it. If you want us to put every specific info on the report then stop putting word limits on it :) and stop telling us that "as long as you follow what the instruction says for every section you would get all the credit" because that is just not the case :D
Prof Leigh is overall a very good lecturer; the material he presents in class is clear and outlines the details of the labs well. However, the grading criteria and grade distribution make it difficult to do well in the class. I was often discouraged from the amount of work that had to be done outside of the class with little reward.
Grades very difficult with no clear rubric. Didn't give helpful feedback either, so I felt very discouraged. He doesn't answer emails either and was pretty hard to reach. He was also rude and sarcastic when students came for help and I sometimes just felt ridiculed. I would try to avoid if you can :/
Professor Leigh is the least empathetic professor I've ever had. He refused to make any accommodations to his class after the TA strike. The lab reports are needlessly hard and tedious and graded insanely harshly. Leigh is extremely condescending and passive aggressive to his students and it seems like he does not want his class to succeed.
DON'T take his class EVER.
I have never felt so unsupported by a professor. He made a lab report (which btw are graded so harshly and so tedious) the day before a final, and has made 0 accommodations for his students. Extremely condescending and expects us to know everything. I have literally had a mental breakdown over this class every day and genuinely think I will fail
Professor Leigh is a very caring professor. His class definitely is rigorous, but that has nothing to do with him, but rather that is how the class as a whole is designed. Brian keeps lectures interesting with memes and jokes, but can come off slightly condescending towards students asking questions. I do believe he genuinely wants you to succeed.
Professor Leigh is tough but fair. He encourages you to figure stuff out instead of having him tell you. Lab reports are decent as he gives a template providing much of the work. Just follow the guidelines in the template without overthinking it and you'll get a good grade. Final is tough though as it covers every lab in detail.
I honestly have no idea why his rating is so high. Gives you a template for lab reports which helps but on the same note the labs are graded so meticulously. Not very accessible outside class and definitely not empathetic towards students, sometimes insults passive aggressively.
Soooo vague in lab reports
Love this guy. Likes to joke around but knows his stuff and teaches it well. Don't mess up your lab reports, go to his office hours, and quadruple-check your calculations. Midterm was easy if you study and final is easy if you know everything CONCEPTUALLY. Don't memorize, understand. Good at getting you to learn, not memorize. Wonderwoman superfan.
Excellent professor! Chem 7L is my first lab course in ucsd. To be honest, it is not easy, it is time-consuming to writer the reports. But Brian makes lectures very interesting! Funny memes, well prepared lectures, guest professors... He is very patient and accessible! Take his course!!!
We had 5 lab reports and two exams, all of which were ridiculously challenging and didn't reflect lectures/labs. You needed to state absolutely everything in the lab report despite the page/word limit. He seemed like he was genuinely excited when he talked about students failing his exams. Grades do not reflect effort or competency in lab.
lectures were explained very poorly making me more confused about the material that i had previously learned in high school. exams were nothing like the homework questions or practice problems in the lecture slides. exam questions were poorly written, so many students were confused on what the question was asking. do not take this prof.
Imagine someone chronically on reddit (which is funny) and then have them teach CHEM lab to a bunch of undergrads. Class was more busy work than understanding the fundamentals imo, and grading rubrics/criteria is often unclear for lab reports. Great guy, hate the class though.
I heard that Professor Leigh was a bad professor before I took this class, but I actually really enjoyed it. Professor Leigh wants his students to do well and provides a lot of important information in lecture, you probably just have to rewatch it to make sure you absorb/understand it all. He is funny and very clearly states what he expects
The class grading was based entirely off you remembering a tiny detail he included in a lecture 4 weeks ago. He never told you what you should put on your lab report and graded you based off including some minute ridiculous keywords in your lab report. Rubric was based around penalizing on as many things as possible. Horrible professor & uncaring.
He genuinely cares about his students, but his humor makes lectures painful sometimes. It sometimes feels like he is trying too hard. He is good at explaining difficult concepts in easier ways to grasp.
Prof. Leigh is by far one of the best chemistry prof. I've had at UCSD. I'm not a chemistry enthusiast, but his explanations are very easy to understand. Exams are very conceptual based, so know the material very thoroughly. Discussion are mandatory, but fairly light. If I were to take Chemistry again, I would definitely take it with Prof. Leigh.
Took him my first year in chemistry, and he is the best. Dedicates a portion of his day to answering questions, and genuinely cares about you and will fight for his students. Be ready for a LOT of dad jokes. Dr. Leigh is the final boss in dad jokes involving science.
Very caring and enthusiastic about his work.
Professor Leigh is one of the best lecturers I've had. He is funny and cares about what he teaches. He had extra office hours every day the week before the final and was great with answering questions. He made a point to tell us that he cared about our success which was really refreshing. Lectures are podcasted and attendance is taken in discussion
I planned all my classes around to take Professor Leigh's class and you should too. He is hilarious and very caring of his students. The exams were challenging because they were multiple choice and time was a big issue, but the final could replace your midterm scores. I am looking forward to taking another one of his classes in the future.
I LOVE PROFESSOR LEIGH! I would take any class with him if I could. He makes everything so easy to understand and clearly outlines his expectations. The midterm was almost the exact same as the practice midterm. As long as you put in work you will pass.
Such a fun professor! The class is hard- with no assistance for the final experiment. There is a lot of work, but the rubrics are clear- being on top of work in this class is crucial. Dr. B and TAs provide PLENTY of help through help room/OH/review sessions. Lectures are important to attend for success here. Curved. Lab reports need to be DETAILED.
Brian Leigh is often funny and lectures were doable, but concepts were hard to understand. If you are not a chemistry person, this class will be very difficult. Tests were impossibly difficult, lots of homework, and he was not the best at explaining. do not recommend if you are not "chemistry person".
Amazing professor. Hard grader but you really learn so much. I would take. any class he teaches.
participation not required test is not hard and there is makeup policy for two exams. will take again!
Overall, class is not difficult if you attend lecture and do the homework. You do have to put in work to receive an A in this class. His midterms and final exam questions come directly from lecture, homework, and quizzes. If you study those, you will be fine. Great professor, will be taking him again for 6B.
dr. leigh is such a funny and caring professor. you can tell he is very knowledgable and passionate about chemistry. he reads off his slides but will often then provide real world examples and explanations. I've taken college chemistry classes 2 times before this class, and he is the first one that helped me actually understand it!
Grades pretty harshly on lab reports. Make sure to triple check your sig figs. He's a very nice and funny guy though.
I really enjoyed his class, it's easy to pass if you try hard and he explains content well. His grading scale is also reasonable and a likeable guy so if you can get him try to! I have no complaints.
Show up to lecture and study well for exams. Class will be an easy A.
Brian Leigh is a good person. His only downfall as a professor is not fully working out his problems and assumes all students understand the concepts at hand. He also gave new concepts and 2 homework and a quiz during week 10 when our final is on Saturday. Pretty inconsiderate of him, but I know he wants whats in everyones best interest.
Chem 6B is a tough course so I recommend taking it with Professor Leigh! He is an excellent professor and has fair exam questions. Your midterm scores are replaceable on the final if you perform better. Weekly quiz questions are always on the exam so you that as a study tool. Crib Sheets are allowed! Def recommend Prof Leigh!
As someone who is not a chemistry person, I had to work my tail off to get an A-, and I barely squeaked it out thanks to his curve at the end of the quarter. Content is difficult but if you try hard you'll learn so much. Leigh teaches with a lot of passion and really tries to make chem interesting. Great professor, even better dude
Lectures were always engaging, but the tests can be difficult in the beginning. This course definitely gets easier as you go.
Loved his lectures, very energetic and kind of funny. This class is the same for all professors, so if you can take Professor Leigh, do it! The class itself is not too bad if you go to lectures and the tests are straightforward, I thought it was easy and I haven't taken chemistry since sophomore year. Lectures are filmed so you don't have to go.
professor leigh is such a wholesome, silly prof. i loved his chem memes before every lecture and although he goes over topics in a fast pace, paired with the homework practice questions, the class was relatively easy to comprehend. loved how he talked about how the exam scores don't define your intelligence, but how prepared you were.
I recommend him 100%. Really good personality, made mw want to actually learn chem at 8 AM, or rewatching because everything recorded. I highly stress attending SI sessions. The hw, SI sessions, and lectures were enough for me to receive a 97 with barely extra review. GO TO SI'S, YOU DO PRACTICE EXAMS THAT ARE SO SIMILAR TO REAL TEST. Goat Yuran.
Professor Leigh was an amazing at lecturing! Homework was relatively easy, but I am not a science-oriented person, so I took a bit more time working on understanding the materials. Overall, he's a great and funny professor who's passionate about the subject! Had him at 8 a.m. and always looked forward to it, but lectures are recorded if you miss.
Professor Leigh is funny and tries to keep his students engaged during lecture. The only problem I had was sometimes he'd speed through or skim through topics that are supposedly "easy" but as someone who doesn't have a strong background in chem, I wish he had been more clear. Definitely requires some hours of studying everyday outside of class.
At first Professor Leigh seems very funny, kind, and passionate but this is a TRAP. He is by far the PETTIEST professor I've ever encountered at UCSD. In fact, I bet he's reading this review laughing to himself. Other than that he is actually a pretty good professor when it comes to lecturing and he knows his stuff. Overall mixed feelings.
I LOVED taking Professor Leigh's class. As someone who was pretty weak in chemistry, I felt like he was so easy to learn from and he really bolstered my confidence in the subject. Discussion attendance is required, but lecture attendance is not and he posts podcasts of all of them that you can watch later.
Would not recommend taking this class alongside another chem course. Finish 6C before moving on to this. Be sure to write everything relevant down in your lab notebook. Pre-lab quizzes are straightforward. Show up to the help room/office hours.
harsh grading scale, takes off too much points in lab reports, really nice person, office hour and help hours are always too busy to actually get any feedback. very good person but don't take for 7L.
funny dude but he loves ragebaiting people. compared to other chem7L profs, he made the final so much harder than it needed to be. be prepared to go to OH hours bc the TAs love to take off points for no reason.
Avoid if you can! Lab is twice a week and then a midterm and final. Dr. Leigh was never clear about what he was looking for lab reports, and they were graded very harshly. Lecture attendance isn't mandatory but you will fail if you don't watch the lectures. He never answers questions, except with "Well what do you think?"
This course was definitely pretty challenging but the professor is very accessible outside of class. The TAs are very tough graders so make sure to go to help sessions otherwise youre going to feel lost!! Dont let the sarcasm of the professor get to you, hes always just making jokes but he really cares about his students! Generous curve as well!
The labs reports are hard. TAs get swamped with questions during office hours right before the deadline so show up early. Prof's youtube channel has a bunch of midterm practice videos which is very similar to the real midterm. Honestly just study everything for the final cuz its hard
If you're considering taking Dr. Leigh's 7L class here are somethings to consider: 1. A strong background in the 6A-C series is critical to success in this class. 2. Attend the lectures or you will not do well on exams or lab reports. 3. Do not take with a lot of other time consuming classes. 4. Grading is tough so attend TA sessions.
Chem 7L is a beast especially because prelabs and lab reports are so time consuming, but the labs themselves were very fun and Prof. Leigh made it so much better. He is super funny and really cares about his students. His lectures are very through on how to complete each experiment and even gives tips on how to not get dinged on the lab report!
Very nice and funny professor. He tries very hard to curve at the end. Lab reports are graded very detailed. Sigfigs can cost you many points. He posted videos about past midterms and the midterms questions are exactly like those in the video. Final exam pretty hard, full of lecture and detailed experimental questions. Go to office hours.
Dr. B's course can be challenging, but it's not hard for the sake of hard. He really just wants students to learn as much as they can and he's there to help you if you need it. He is great at simplifying ideas, and he is really funny and wise! I would highly recommend Dr. B for gen chem lab!! You can get a lot out of it if you like to learn.
Professor was very tough and though he might seem to care about your well being. he doesn't. He is very condescending and expects a lot from the freshman students. If you can take chem 7L take that not 7LM. The TA's are fantastic they will always help you and are very accessible through help rooms and via email. Lab reports take a lot of time!
Chill guy Lab is difficult but he provides a lot of resources to do well on the reports and there's good feedback given on each writeup. Midterm was relatively easy, final was rough but it was a fair reflection of the course and nothing was a surprise. Cares a lot about students and his lectures are silly
easiest class ive taken at ucsd so far
His class made me fall even more in love with Chem. The class is challenging as the labs/reports took up a good chunk of my week to do. The instructions on the lab reports are vague and it's CRUCIAL to go to the Help Room because you will get marked off for the littlest things. Leigh is also hilarious and he'll show you pictures of his cats.
Hilarious to listen to + cares for students; bit unclear what is wanted in reports at times; lectures not mandatory + flexible. Midterm good; barely prepped us for the final so I had to memorize everything and still felt uneasy. Do not take with other time-consuming classes. Despite going to TA helproom every day, I still got tons of points off.
Professor Leigh is very nice, his lectures are awesome to attend and optional, only the labs are mandatory attendance, but his lab reports are pretty hard and you definitely need to show up and listen carefully every day during lectures to do well on those lab reports, other than that the lab itself is not too bad, hes a great professor for sure
Prof Leigh is such a nice and funny professor. I didn't really go to the lecture because it was t mandatory, but I honestly wish I had because he's such a fun lecturer. Grade is from lab reports, quizzes/tests, and can be kind of tedious. At least watch the lecture, as most of the pre-lab content is covered there. Your TA really matters.
This class was honestly very difficult, you have to play a guessing game when it comes to writing lab reports because there is no rubric and they are super tedious and specific. With that being said the class is insanely curved, Brian is super funny and inspiring but you spend most of this course with your TA so that's what really matters
Never went to lecture after week 3 but still did great. He's a funny dude who knows the material well, but the lab reports are so tedious and sometimes lab manual (where u write prelabs from) doesnt match up that well with the lab template you need to submit. GO TO HELP ROOM to ask questions abt lab report, I'd prolly be cooked w/o it.
Prof Leigh is my absolute goat. Lectures not mandatory (but very entertaining), labs are. The class is based on two midterms, lab reports, & other misc. stuff. The lab reports are graded insanely, & it's impossible to guess the items on the rubric points they take off for, but you can ask questions on piazza and go to help room. Also curves at end
He was a really great professor. I would recommend going to office hours because the lab reports are graded really difficult, but he is willing to answer any questions and office hours really helped me for the lab reports. Overall a very kind guy and I enjoyed going to his lectures and talking to him in office hours.
