VERY hard class...
definitely challenging class but dr. leskiw is extremely helpful and approachable. would recommend SI tutorial for him.
I had him the first semister. Very intense lecture, make sure to print the notes off WebCT before the class, otherwise you will be lost. Out side of class he is very helpful and will answer any questions you have. The test were difficult. Because he was new the format varried a lot. They did get better by the end of the semister though.
Excellent lecturer...you will learn chem from this professor. He is not curving his class this spring semester, but you just need to get above the mean to do well. Highly recommend him, if you want to learn chemistry. Rumor has it he's also teaching chem 1516 this summer and physical chemistry.
Possibly one of the worst professors I've had at YSU. His lectures were poorly planned and he had excessive trouble communicating clearly with the class. While I'm sure he is very knowledgable in the subject matter, he regularly made simple mistakes in his examples resulting in much wasted class time. He was helpful outside of class, however.
Not always the most polite guy. Very knowledgable on the subject though. Would never take his class again.
Excellent professor, intelligent, listens to students concerns and questions. Always available for questions and very patient. Too bad students take his class, do not show up or study and then complain.
EXCELLENT professor! Wish he would be teaching more classes I need to take! He was very thorough and his tests was pretty tough. Going to his office hours helps tremendously, he is very approachable and kind. Don't underestimate this man. Not to mention he likes AWESOME music!
A good professor, though not always the most polite. Tests are all problem-based with partial credit, but he always gets them graded on time. Kind of soft-spoken, so sit near the front if you want to hear. If you study the practice sets, you should do fine.
just studying practice tests might get you to pass..on a good day. The class is hard, and it should be. He is soft spoken, but I sat in the back and heard just fine. His lectures are incredibly planned. He follows the syllabus exactly. Trust me, you want the tests to be problems over multiple choice.partial credit.DUH.He is more then willing to help
Leskiw -- the ladies love Leskiw. If you aren't afraid of actually learning the material (but, fortunately, not the minutiae), a great professor. Also, as others have noted, a great rapport with students in office hours. Taste in music: borderline.
great teacher!
Subject matter is hard, took in summer was very fast paced so you had to keep up with the questions assigned in the book. Teacher is very clear in explaining things and has a good sense of humor. Test are hard but gives a curve, would be easier in a regular semester.
Took him in the summer when I never had chem before. Great teacher, very clear, & will do many problems on the board to help understand. Fast paced but he's wonderful. Great curve & is very helpful.
He is a fantastic teacher and will do plenty of example problems to help you understand. He is always around during office hours. His exams can have some tricky questions sometimes but his dry sense of humor makes up for them.
I loved Leskiw! I had him for both 1515 and 1516. 1516 is much harder, but Dr. Leskiw made everything very easy to understand. He is very helpful and is always there during office hours. You must go to class, but the curve at the end is extremely helpful. I highly recommend him to anyone!
Had him for 1516 also
I had Leskiw for 1515 as well and absolutely love him! He's a great professor and always willing to help. Take advantage of office hours, enjoy his good taste in music, and he's pretty cute too. Attend class to get a full understanding of everything. 1516 can be hard at times, but he explains everything very well.
Tough, but very fair. He is super smart and at times can move a little fast, but always willing to answer questions. He truly believes there are no stupid questions. Can break things down so anyone can understand them. Great teacher!
Dr. Leskiw was one of the best professors ever. I was terrified of him in chem 1, but in chem 2, I loved him. He was so helpful when I went to his office hours. He's very clear in the way he explains the material. His tests can be tough, but if you study a lot you'll be fine. He's just an all around cool guy.
Dr. Leskiw is awesome. Had him for 1515 and 1516. Did a great job. Wish he taught O Chem
He is an awesome professor. He tries to joke around a lot. He is very helpful during his office hours and he's willing to help.
I had mr Leskiw for chem 1515 and 1516..he is an awesome professor. He is very willing to help you with anything you need and you can always find him in office hours. As long as you go to class and do the recommended problems he gives you will do just find. I highly recommend taking him!! Plus he grades on a curve so that's a big plus :))
Dr. Leskiw does a TON of examples which really help. Very active class. Really loves what he does. I'm looking forward to having him again for CHEM 1516.
Awesome professor. Shows you how to do every type of problem he expects you to know. Makes class interesting. Most of the time anyway.
He is very straightforward and organized. I've learned a lot from his class and would recommend taking him!
The best professor I've ever had. Extemely helpful and is willing to work around your schedule to find time to help you out. A lot of work but very fair and an awesome professor.
he is one of the best professors around. he will always offer extra help and go the extra mile for u to understand. would def take another class from him
Good in lectures, though he does go through examples too fast sometimes. ASK QUESTIONS! Tests are tough, so do the practice tests he makes available. Is available for help outside of class. Overall a very good professor, it's just tough material.
He is very clear and always takes questions in class. He goes over a lot of examples in class. Tests are THOROUGH not tricky. Make sure you read the whole question. Ask questions and laugh at his stupid jokes.
Leskiw is such a nice guy and you can tell he cares about the students. I struggled in his classes because of how in depth the material is, plus I had little interest in it. His tests are sometimes tricky, but make sure you know the material like the back of your hand when you take the test. His sense of humor is very amusing too!
Great Teacher. Tests are straight forward if you take the time to study and really pay attention! Also I went to the tudoring offered in class. Well worth it!
Dr. Leskiw was not my professor, but he substituted for mine for 3 days, and after he went over ENTIRE chapters in one day I understood everything that my prof (mettee) was trying to get across. Amazing professor! He got a standing ovation from a few classes! TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!
An AWESOME Professor. I had him for Chem 1515 over the summer and even though it was a lot of material to cover in such a little amount of time. he made it a breeze to go through. If you need help just ask him and he'll be more than happy to assist you.
Dr. Leskiw is purely awesome. He is a great professor and he'll do whatever he can to help you. Even though he has over 100 students in a single class, he tries and usually succeeds learning student's names. Exams are all multiple choice and usually about 25 questions. All of his old exams and answer keys are also online.
Leskiw is quite the professor and is flat out helpful if you have any chemistry classes and this guy teaches it register right away for it.
AMAZING professor! I could actually walk out of lecture having learned something. He works out enough problems in class that you are able to do them as well. Very, very helpful. He takes the time to learn everyones name in a huge lecture and really makes you feel as though you are important as his student.
Dr. Leskiw is an amazing professor. Material is explained very clearly and a lot of examples are worked out afterwards to make sure the material sinks in. Tests are very consistent with material presented for a total of 3 tests and a final exam. Homework is assigned as practice but is not graded. Would DEFINITELY recommend Dr. Leskiw
Dr. Leskiw is the best professor I have encountered to date. He is incredibly helpful, and very knowledgeable. I would strongly recommend taking a course with him.
Doctor Leskiw is very clear with what he is teaching, and can really simplify a complex idea well so that the class understands it. Being that I no longer need chemistry due to a change in major, I am glad that I ended up with him and not some other goon. Definitely take him if you're looking to learn effectively.
Great professor! He is very clear and straight forward with the problems in class. NO NEED ON BUYING THE BOOK! He does not reference it, neither uses it. If you take good notes, and pay attention, and actually practice the problems on his sample exams, its a well earned A. BEST CHEM PROFESSOR!
If you pay attention in class and read the book and do the problems along with the course at home you should do well. He is very thorough, very fair, and sets very clear expectations at the beginning of the semester.
Great teacher! Clearly explains almost everything and tests weren't too bad at all if you study. he gave us a sample test for every exam and they were very similar to each other. He'll review a ton of questions to help you understand every thing you need to know for the test. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!! He gives practice problems but doesn't go over them
I enjoyed going to this class. One of the best professors I've had and I am planning on taking chem 2 with him as well.
Dr. Leskiw is the best! I had him for gen chem 1 and 2 along with pchem 1 and 2. He thoroughly explains everything well and always has great, simple ways to explain even the most difficult of concepts. Additionally, he is one of only a few professors I've ever had that takes time to care about each student and their individual learning abilities.
Dr. Leskiw is an absolutely amazing professor. Went into his class with little knowledge of chemistry but he taught wonderfully. Finished with a very good grade. Studying is a must. He was always around to help if needed.
I barely studied and managed to pass. I think he is intelligent, patient, and easy to work with. I feel almost ANYONE can pass.
I posted an earlier review which came out incorrectly. I think Dr. L is intelligent, patient, and easy to work with. I rarely studied and managed to pass. I recommend him!
Leskiw is a great teacher and cares about students passing.
Leskiw is a great teacher and cares about students passing. He is my favorite professor by far. He is fair and very intelligent.
Very pompous, the labs are a waste of time and do nothing to aid with the coursework. Turned me off from chemistry.
I wish he taught biochem. I had him during the summer. He can be a smart ***, but he's down to heart. Really, I had no issues and he has a up beat personality. He's more of a problem solver. Course went by quick and he made is less intimidating
Great teacher with lectures that won't bore you to death. He conveys the material in an easy to understand manner and provides plenty of examples to make sure you have a sound understanding.
He is one of the best Chemistry Professors at YSU and I feel bad for the students that won't have him for Gen Chem in the future. He is always available when you need help and will never turn anyone away. Great sarcastic humor which I think makes him all the better.
Great professor! Clear and does a lot of examples. Chemistry can be hard, but he is very helpful in making it more enjoyable. Definitely take him!
Really really great guy. Awesome lecturer with very clear examples. Always in office for office hours and is very easy to talk to. If you take him you will appreciate his way of doing things. Always had a curve appropriate for class performance. Great guy!
The only grades in the class come from several tests. He gives study guides for the tests and practice problems from the book. If you can easily answer these questions, you can get A's on every test. You can skip the class but try to get notes from someone, because Leskiw gives clear notes with LOTS of examples. He also answers questions in class.
Great professor. His exams were not easy but if you attend every class, take notes and read the book you will get a good grade. Very clear explanations and actually gives a crap about his students. I wish he would teach every single Chemistry class at YSU.
Very clear and helpful
One of YSU's best by far. Although the class is hard, the tests are fair and he will curve. He is always in his office for questions and actually cares about his students like a high school teacher. I would take any class he is teaching. Like any difficult class, you have to go and work hard, not an "easy A".
Very good professor. You must attend class to succeed. He explains every thing very clearly. Tests are all multiple choice and he gives a curve that's generally one point. General Chemistry 2 was harder than General Chemistry 1. The tests are challenging.
Great Professor!
Terrible class. Grade is strictly based on tests.
He's always available outside class and willing to help. He is an AMAZING chem teacher; I used to hate chem. Attending class is crucial for passing. The only grades are the tests, so study up. Depending on the class average, he may put a huge curb on the tests. He gives suggested problems from the book, but that's all the book would be used for.
Amazing professor. His lectures are very helpful and if you ever have a problem he has open ears. There are only 3 tests in this course so you get what you get but he gives you all the material that you need. You just have to put the effort in and study. Notes are uploaded to blackboard along with practice tests. Overall, great experience.
Leskiw is the best Chemistry professor at YSU. If you need to take Chemistry take him. He is always willing to help you and is always in his office if you need him.
He is a very great professor and I learned a lot from him. This is not an easy class, however. You must practice outside of class if you expect to get an A on the exams since there is a lot of material covered on them.
Dr. Leskiw is an incredibly smart guy who I definitely recommend taking. His tests are meant to trick you and he loves to put "good wrong answers" on the tests. Grade is solely based on the three exams and the final, plus the lab. Study hard for the tests or you won't pass the course.
If you miss class you will be completely lost. He is extremely accommodating though. You could meet with him in office hours or try and schedule a time to meet with him throughout the day. He seems harsh but if you are respectful and honest with him he's a great professor.
Dr. Leskiw is one of the best chemistry professors at YSU. SI review sessions really helped. He also is extremely understanding of personal issues going on and understands life isn't just college. He is available during office hours. He loves "good wrong answers". Go to class, do the reviews he posts online, and go to SI once or twice.
He is an awesome professor! I would love to take him again! He loves to help students in any way he can! I took advantage of his office hours and he really was able to help me understand! Chemistry is hard no matter what, but he helps to make it not so hard!
definitely the best professor for general chemistry, very well-known of the subject. he can go pretty fast during lectures and isn't the best at answering questions during, but afterwards or in office hours, very helpful. you definitely should go to class and the SI sessions. pretty difficult class, just don't fall too far behind & you'll do well.
Dr. Leskiw is a fantastic professor. The 8am is VERY well worth it. The lecture room is always quiet so it is easy to pay attention and follow along. He is very easily accessible outside of class plus he does not mind at all if you talk to him outside of office hours. He actually loves when students come to ask Qs. It is chem, so you need to study
He does a lot of explains on the board to help you understand how to do the problems. He genuinely wants you to understand everything and pass the class with an A
It's a lot of lecture, but he makes it easier to understand. He is also very helpful.
Dr. Leskiw is a great professor who knows a lot about chemistry. He is very helpful when you need to ask him questions out of class.
Leskiw teaches well. He is very predictable on tests. His test are multiple choice. He has a very good sense of humor. He will make fun of people that make dumb mistakes on tests.
Dr Leskiw is a great professor and is very knowledgeable in his field. Best professor I had for both my fall and spring semesters. He wants you to succeed and if you really put in the effort you will. I wish I could take him for more classes, and I'm disappointed that I won't be able to. He also has a great sense of humor and makes me laugh.
Dr. Leskiw mixed mastery of his subject and humor very well. He always let students know how to determine their standing in the class. He was easily approachable as well, both right after class and during office hours. Lastly, he seemed to know every student's name in the class even if you never talked to him, even in a huge class
Dr. Leskiw is an awesome professor! He explains the materials very well and you can tell he cares and wants all of his students to do well. He also makes the class fun with his sense of humor. Hes always willing to meet up outside of office hours if needed. I would definitely take a course from him again. One of the best professors at Ysu!
Great professor! He teaches the material in way that the students can easily understand it. He explains clearly what will be on the exams and there are no surprises. Sometimes he gives spontaneous bonus opportunities.
Dude is a GOAT and thats all that needs said about him. Take him and you will feel like you've actually learned something in college. Exams are decent if you know your stuff from the lectures but time is a factor.
I took this class twice. The first time I did not come to class because I did not really want to be there, my parents were forcing me to go to school. I got D. So I retook the class over the summer and actually went to class, listened to the lectures, still did not study and I got a C. He explains things well, and he's a funny dude.
He wants you to succeed and will always answer questions during office hours and in class.
He makes chemistry interesting and relatable to life
This class is graded purely by tests and labs, so they matter a lot, but they aren't hard. Go to class and SI and you will definitely pass. Leskiw really cares about his students and if you need help he is really good about his office hours. He is the best chem professor at YSU.
You have to study and he is extremely fair.
Is all lecture except for your lab once a week. He is an amazing prof would take him again he keeps the lectures interesting and is funny. 10/10
Took gen chem 1 over the summer with Leskiw and had a blast. Really fun to listen to and does a really good job explaining the material. Managed to get a C by just going to the lectures and taking notes, no extra studying. Overall he's a great guy and I'd love to take more classes with him.
I did very bad on his tests but that was my own fault. His tests aren't hard if you listen in class and take notes. Sometimes its hard to pay attention though because chem is pretty boring. I would take him again, I had no problems with him.
Dr. Leskiw is one of the greatest professors I have ever had. He truly cares about his students and wants nothing more than to see them succeed. Youll hear people complain that his class is hard but if you actually do the things he asks you to do youll be fine. Do the extra problems on the syllabus and go to class. Nicest guy youll ever meet.
Hard class. Tests were not everything he lectured about. Make sure you I passed with a B, but with a lot of studying. I was a 4.0 student in high school but struggled with this class. Good Luck.
Dr. Leskiw was an amazing professor. I wasnt able to have him in face to face classes but he was very organized and a fast responder to all emails and made online chemistry a breeze. He was willing to go out of his way to help you whenever you needed it. I highly recommend taking his class. Probably one of the best professors I have had at YSU.
Pay attention during lectures and take notes! We have 10 hw problems on each chapter &you get 2 attempts; he gives a studyguides and goes over it but they dont really look like the exam so just review notes oblems Leskiw did during the lectures. if you have questions ask after class or look at youtube videos, it helps alot
Dr. Leskiw was one of my favorite professors this semester. He always made sure he helped his students to the best of his ability, and would always stop to answer questions even if he was in the middle of a lecture. He really cares about his students and wants them to pass, even by going the extra mile whenever he could so we could succeed.
Literally the best professor at YSU. I wish he taught every single class! Make sure to do the homework for chem 1 and chem 2. If you ever need help he is the most caring person and will go so far out of his way to help. Amazing professor and man!!!!
Practice exams are way easier than actual. Not Mandatory, but you won't get the information otherwise, his slides are different then on blackboard. Reading the book & practice problems are a must. Good guy, available for office hours. TAKE RECITATION. If you get sick, great w/ extensions. He cares about his students. If you try, he will too.
Great guy. Great at explaining the content. Make sure to study smaller details and cover everything in each chapter.
I took Dr. Leskiw for Gen Chem 1 and Gen Chem 2, and both courses were miserable. I used to love chemistry before I took his class. I never felt prepared to take exams, which were very different from practice material, and I practiced everything. Never really knew what to expect on exams. He was also very arrogant.
Lower end General Education classes should not be as difficult as this class was. Get ready for homework that is not designed for you to learn, bad TA's if you take the lab, and tests that are way harder than you think they will be. I have always been a straight A honors student and this is the only class I've ever struggled in. Good Luck.
An absolutely horrible experience in Gen Chem 1. If you can, save yourself the anguish and just avoid him entirely. Not a good explainer, had to self-teach the entire class myself, and difficult tests.
Dr. Leskiw is a great professor. He is always available during office hours and willing to meet after if needed. If you study and ask questions, you should have no problem doing well in his class. He cares about his students doing well. Not sure what's up with the previous couple comments but those students must not have tried much.
Dr. Leskiw is the GOAT! He responds to emails crazy fast and never makes you feel dumb for asking questions. Gen Chem 2 is a challenging course. However, he made it enjoyable and not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. His exams are straight from the lecture/connect/practice exams. Just show up to class and try and you will pass no problem
Leskiw is okay. He's a good guy but can seem rude at times when we don't do well on tests. He lets us access the lecture online Webex, tests are in person though. Tests are difficult but does have connect hw assignments. Probably the best chem professor at YSU so take him if you can. I just don't learn well from his lectures unfortunately.
Talks in a very monotone voice and its hard to stay focused and interested in his class. There are no homework assignments and your grade is based entirely on tests. This way of teaching is very difficult for me.
Good professor, good class. Tests reflect the problems from lecture, so probably go to the lectures.
Dr. Leskiw is a great guy and if you show you care about your grade, he'll care too. GO TO CLASS - he does several examples that are similar to what's on the test. Only downfall is no partial credit on test (multiple choice) Most of our exams had an average of 50% - 60%. Chem is very hard but he tries his best to make it less intimidating.
Dr. Leskiw is one of the best professors at YSU by far. The HW is slightly difficult but he gives 2 attempts, so it is still easy to do well and learn from your mistakes. He posts old exams as practice exams that are very useful as study material. Go to class, pay attention, and study a little, and you can easily do well in the class.
If I could take Dr. Leskiw for every class I would. What makes his lectures stand out is that he does problems with you instead of reading off slides. He always responded to emails and promotes his office hours in class which showed he cared to help. His commercial breaks were a hit also. He's a really cool guy, if you care he will also.
Leskiw was a good professor as he taught exactly what he needed to and gave homework that required you to apply yourself. There's 3 exams and a final that you need to study for. If anyone needed help he was there. Chemistry isn't easy for everyone and he understands that so he makes it simple enough for everyone to understand.
Dr. Leskiw is very helpful, he is always available during office hours and responds super quick to emails. He is also a really nice person and he's got jokes! Take him if you want to learn a thing or two and do well. You will learn a lot from him.
I've learned a lot in Dr. Leskiw's class. I enjoy going to class, he makes it fun to learn the material. If you study you will do well, no doubt. Office hours are super helpful plus there's music. There's a reason he has so many good ratings, do what you will with that info. I'd take him over any chem prof at YSU. Wish he taught all my classes tbh
Dr. Leskiw treated our General Chemistry 1 class like it was a review session. His office hours aren't helpful whatsoever. His tests are ridiculously difficult and overcomplicated, and is redundant with his email responses. It's embarrassing to ask him questions. Our class average on tests were 30-50%. Avoid him at all costs.
It was my first semester at ysu and he wasn't even supposed to be my lecturer originally, but I'm glad he was. The only professor I've had, even now, that wasn't too reliant on online work/readings so I was actually able to learn the content. I wish he taught more chem classes because I'd definitely take them.
Overall Mr. Leskiw is a great instructor. Also, he is the director of the chemistry department, so he is the go-to guy for any concern or questions. Great individual, humble, and care about you learning and obtaining the knowledge in his class. If you miss class and you know you're not good with chemistry, it'll be your fault if you fail.
Anyone that says Dr. Leskiw is tough on exams is just lazy. All content covered in class was on exams, and lectures were enjoyable. People complain that it is too fast, but they don't try to reinforce outside of class, which is their own fault if they do bad. Very nice and funny, cares if you care. Def the best chem professor. Take him if you can!
I had Dr Leskiw for Chem 1 and 2. I definitely recommend taking him. He is caring and receptive to student feedback. Yes, his exams are very difficult. Regular reviewing is a must and I highly recommend tutoring at the Resch Center. Exams are mostly taken from class notes. HW assignments once a week.
Brian Leskiw is an incredibly challenging professor. He's unresponsive to emails, makes rude comments in class, and teaches too quickly. Despite my efforts, I struggle and fail in his class. I recommend avoiding him.
Only grades are quizzes and tests - no homework. Was an intro class and I found it rather difficult - needed a tutor after the first week. He is very nice, but the exams are very difficult and the averages are pretty low (C-D)
I like how he writes out his notes and does problems with us. The exams are those problems. I was nervous going into the course since I've never taken chemistry. Dr. Leskiw explains really well. He's given the same extra credit question for weeks now. If you aren't doing well that's on you. I hope to take him again in my other chemistry course
Dr. Leskiw was very nice in office hours. Overall he was helpful and I wish I could take him for organic chemistry.
Physical Chemistry is a difficult subject and requires a lot of practice, but I enjoy his style of lecture; he writes everything down rather than flipping through slides. He provides a lot of graphs to display the ideas, and quizzes on conceptual ideas to practice the material, also suggests practice problems on his syllabus which is helpful.
Dr.Leskiw is an amazing man himself. Pchem is a challenging subject, and you cannot pass the class as easily as General 1 and 2. Even though Pchem is hard but, he makes the topics easier to understand. I studied the actual book and could not understand a word he also gave us 20 points extra credit after the first exam and it was shocking!
Dr. Leskiw is a good professor who gives informative lectures. However, course grades are based solely on in-class quizzes and exams, which lack consistent grading criteria. Additionally, minimal feedback is provided, and partial credit is rarely awarded. His office hours are limited, but can be helpful.
Prof Leskiw runs a challenging but rewarding class. Lectures cover the key content, and regular studying plus the free textbook are musts. Unstuck ai was a huge help for practice and prep - saved me tons of time. Give it your all and you'll do well.
Although attendance is not mandatory, you will not be successful if you don't attend lecture. Dr. Leskiw writes out all of his notes by hand, and those notes are only available for the students who are present during class. Leskiw does have slideshow presentations for each chapter, but they only go over concepts, not application of those concepts.
Attendance isn't mandatory but definitely necessary. He hands out random extra credit and the slideshows he posts isn't enough for you to do good on the exams with. He randomly hands out extra credit if you attend as well. His tests are really difficult as he likes tricks, but his teaching is so good that its all fair games honestly.
