Uses powerpoint for lectures, lots of reading and homework. Good professor, hard class!
Great professor. Always there to help you. he even has a AIM screen name if you need to ask a question.
Oh my god! 2/3 of the classes dropped out because he's too hard! He's nice teacher and all, but his test are hard. Overall a great teacher, but u have to work very very very hard in his class. Other teachers are easier..
Hes a nice teacher and very helpful but his tests are too freaking hard!
worst class and worst teacher at UIC. discourages students, is unhelpful, unfair, and rude.
He picks on you at lecture time. if u dont know ur stuff dont go to class. he makes u look like an idiot
Its Accounting. Its suppose to be hard. Very understandable. If you dont like powerpoint notes, then a little more difficult. helpful. Actg. 110 is nothin. just wait till u go on further taking more actg. classes.
His class is too hard but its Accounting so its suppose to be hard. He explains well and helps you in whatever you need.
Funny & likes to jingle his pocket change, it makes class exciting. He gives very good examples and will even talk to you online after school if you needed help. However, the tests are bit hard, you have to know your stuff in order to do well.
Too many quizzes and too much homework. Exams seemed alright until the final (very hard) One class should not be this difficult. He does like picking on students and making them look like fools. Take someone else if you can.

He's a great professor, although he's quite hard. His tests are very thorough nad cover a lot of material. However, they resemble the homework (in some way). Makes you think, not just memorize. you definitely learn in his classes
He's one of the worst accounting professors I met. He knows his stuff, but I guess somewhere down the road he lost all the passion for the subject. He likes picking on people, knows how to be sarcastic and just plain rude.
Very discouraging-Wastes time asking the whole class questions, plays the did you read the HW review game. These are difficult classes in general, but he shouldn't be teaching them. Likes to put students down, even insults his step-son. I got B's & still hated him. THANK GOD I transfered!
****ing **** teacher i dont know what he think of himself dicourages students and he doesnt realize that he is the one who is not getting good job among fortune 500 companies and teaching in a university. as my experience plz dont take this teacher ever for this class. since i am running out of space i cannot write more plz email me for more....

He's very arrogant and cannot teach! I suggest you do not take him for any class.
he's very annoying and a massocist in accounting
he's the devil
Exams were long and tedious, much like the subject matter, that’s my main complain. His teaching style needs some improvement,I did like the fact that his exams were not about memorization but comprehension. If accounting is your thing take the class, however the other instructors teaching it are a lot easier. Oh,and don't take Salama for ANY CLASS
He likes to put students on the spot in class and it is really uncomfortable. He kinda treats you like a moron if you don't know the answer. He gives great lectures, but I often felt like a nervous wreck after some of his classes.
This class is tough by nature. The material is something that you have to spend a lot of time with it. Its a class where you will make a cecision if accounting is for you. The prof. knows his stuff and is a nice guy, but the class is tough. His lecture style is not that great. He is devil's brother, Evil!
AWEFUL !!!
THE MATERIAL IS DIFFICULT, but he does his best to help as much as possible! No other pro. i've had has as much office time as him. Granted that you are put on the spot during class, but this only makes you prepare before class, which enforces a good work ethic. He knows what he is doing, if you are going for your CPA,he is your best bet at passing!
Very clear explanation. He really knows what he's talking about.
The reason to not major in accounting is that you might get this jackass as a professor. He's rude, inconsiderate to his students, reads off his slides and gives the most ambiguous 3 hour tests I've ever seen. He told me maybe accounting isn't for me, that's why I'm a consultant for Ernst & Young pulling in 39/hr plus benefits. He knows his stuff..
He is absolutely awful. His tests are brutal, 3 hour exams. Please avoid him at all costs.
This is a tough class on its own, but Prof. Leventhal makes it even more difficult than it has to be. I was confident before every exam that I knew the material, that I had mastered it. However, after his 3 hour exams it was clear that any examples, homework, or quizzes couldn't even prepare you for the questions he gives!! Avoid if you can!!
It's the hardest class I ever took. I had to take it twice to get it right. I learned lots.

Lots of work involved, very tough grader.
good profesor. if you are a serious accounting student and take this class seriously, you will get a LOT out if it. others will just complain that it is hard. he is defintely an expert in accounting.
Awesome accounting teacher. Challenging tests but if you want to be an Accounting major, you have to take this teacher at least once.
Hard professor but learn a lot.
He is a jerk. He drives you to death. no mercy. Tons of work, even in exam week. Quiz every week, 25 minutes each, but give you no timer, so you don't know how much time left for the quiz. Talks super fast in class, doesn't care if you follow. Sigh.... taking his class is a regret. should have listened to previous feedbacks.
You will learn a lot and it is important information if you're a MBA student.
he is extremely hard. and please, do not take his class in the summer! everyone told me i was making a mistake by taking his class, but i was overconfident and i thought i could do it. clearly, i was wrong.
Horrible test were to hard
hard teacher, knows his stuff....first exam B, second F, final exam A, came out to a B for an overall grade.
He was a an excellent professor. Although, I didnt do well in the class, he was always available, I just didn't have the time to commit to it. He is the best professor for this class.
He cannot TEACH! It's a huge difference between knowing the information and trying to relay them in understandable terms to your students, which he clearly cannot. Yes, this is like an independent study class. You're going to have to ask help from other professors and students, since he really doesn't help during office hours. Take Salama!!
very hard class, he gives challenging problems that are not found in the book, but i guess in the end you will benefit once you figure it out
HE STINKS!!! DON'T ever take his class! His exams are undoubtedly brutal. He's so rushy in classes when explaining the problems!! When student asked him "how the figures came from?" he answered it's a plug-in! Hell knows!! YOU GOTTA EXPLAIN!! I PAY YOU FOR TEACHING, NOT GRADING MY EXAMS! Think he's just been teaching (over 20 years) for too long!!

AVOID if you can... !!!!!
Class is extremely hard, professor doesn't teach, talks fast, avoid if you can ...too bad uic doesn't offer many choices.....
He definitely is good at explaining accounting concepts and testing a student's understanding of accounting(by calling on students for about 30% of the class time).Hardest part of this class are the TESTS.They are a brutal 3 hours from HELL!He tests on everything and doesn't give partial credit.Says tests are to prepare for CPA.Hardest class ever.
He is one of the best teachers I've ever met. He loves teaching and gives hard test and quizes to push you study. For those who want to sit for CPA exam, he is the best choice. You really learn accounting from him. He was awarded the best teacher for UIC accounting dept in 2008. He also curves.
he is extremely tough. you need to keep up on all assignments and be prepared to be called on in class. But, he knows you are learning, and wants to help. don't let his harshness get to you--that's just how he is. He does want his students to succeed, and if you need help go in to his office hours, he is very good when asking for 1 on 1 help.
I've had him for 315 in Spring and 316 Fall. I liked 316 better than 315, he seems more enthusiastic to teach 316. He is a really good professor and very approachable. It will definitely feel weird not having him as a professor next semester. You will NOT be bored in his class, he's too loud for that. If you put your time into it, you'll do well!
Took this class online. Very helpful, always available to answer questions, just truly committed to teaching and being there for the students. A+++++++ Highly recommend!
good professor
HARD!!! He does not give any guidance on what to know. Stuff that we didn't emphasize according to him will still be on the exam. We will practically be done with half the chapter's homework before he begins teaching us that lesson!
Good professor and a nice guy but exams are EXTREMELY difficult. The first exam is much easyer than the second one. I wish the exams were easyer but i have to admit i did learn a lot . . .
Good thing is you really learn a lot from him. Bad thing is this guy is really hard, and he keeps rushing most of the class materials. Homeworks are needed to finish before he starts teaching them.
His exam doesn't base on what he teach in the class. All the exam is extremely hard. One of the three exams has a lot of questions which only get credit by getting the correct figure. He didn't give partial credit for that. Even I got a A in the class, it was paining (a part of my body)highly not recommended!!
Took this course over the summer (even though many people told me not to). Worked full time and ended up with an A. Prof Leventhal very approachable and helpful. If you want to do well in this class, you must dedicate time into to. I studied prob 20-30 hours a week! Lectures aren't boring, he is very enthusiastic to teach. Be prepared! :)
Keep in mind intermediate accounting is tough course by itself. Prof Leventhal goes fast to keep on schedule with syllabus. During office hours he's impatient. This is course where you teach yourself for most part. To survive, read and study text every night. Don't skip homework! Go over material repeatedly. Don't quit!
Challenging, tons of work, but if you want to learn then this is the professor. Slackers need not enroll because you will fail out of this class. Really makes you understand accounting and not just memorize. When i pass the CPA i will come back and thank him. Every accounting major should take B Levy!
Prepare to surrender your life to this class. Reading and rereading chapters before classes and exams is pretty much necessary as is going through hw multiple times. Pop quizzes are difficult and exams are brutally long. However if you study well in advance you'll probably do better than you think.
Awesome professor, if you don't like his class maybe consider changing your major. Wish there were more prof. like him to prepare for the CPA.
Extremely hard class, if you wanna learn take his class.
he goes in a VERY fast pace and doesnt explain material clearly! this course will take up most of your time bec he gives out looong homeworks every single day! exams are brutally long and hard! professor is useless & he'll confuse you even more! i passed this course mainly by self studying: reading book 2x before exam and re-doing all the HW.
Personally, I enjoyed his class! He knows his stuff and will ask questions to test your understanding of the material in class. In addition, he makes you work for your grade, if you didn't like his class probably because you didn't take the class seriously; at the end you will learn a lot from this prof.
He doesn't teach = proctor. Text book = holy grail of the class, but he throws a lot of stuff at you that you have never seen or thought about. Any rating that gives positive light on this man is a bold faced lie. Pop quizzes, unannounced hw collections, and the first quiz and last exam from the underworld. Good luck. I'm getting a C or B.
Very time consuming class, but due to the assignments and tests being online it makes it easier. He gives a pretty generous curve - complete the assignments and quizzes each week you will end up with at least a B. Don't count on him for ANY help - plan on teaching yourself accounting from the book.
After taking both 315/316 with Leventhal, it's clear that the latter is his favorite to teach. The same rules as before apply but the class seems more manageable and a tad easier. I've learned a tremendous amount from these two courses.
I liked him as a person, and I wanted to rate him well but he has two major problems that really limited my ability to give him a good rating, A)He has a bad habit of interrupting you and answering the question you DIDN'T ask. B)Sometimes he is very obviously unprepared for lecture. This class should be hard, but I wish he'd been a bit more helpful
Read the book more than 3 times each chapter and do every single homework(actaully try to understand it), go to every lectures too (he might give up pop quiz. That will give you at least C, and then go to his office hours and ask him questions you have, then it will give you a B. Study more than 15+ hours a week should give A. (: fun class, yea?
You know a professor is horrible when he makes reviews of himself.(Look at the last two recent ratings and 5/19/08).This is his way to get an A:Go to his lectures where he just answers questions and not teach anything yet try to understand and do the hw and do good on tests that are 75% different from anything from the book or hw.
He is a very smart guy. When he is in a good mood his explanations are crystal clear, but very often he does not feel like teaching, so he does not explain anything. His quizzes are hard, but his exams are HORRIBLE. Go to his office hours if you do not understand the material, he?ll explain it to you. He might seem a bit arrogant, but deep insid
Read the book slow and carefully, highlight, do homework and understand it, get help quickly if you need to, start REVIEWING 5 before exam, do the practice problems - that will get u easy B or A. Exams are about 20 pages each and every question is meant to trick you. There is a quiz in 2nd week and the avg was 5 out 25 - it's only meant to scare u
Nice guy but Bad Professor cause he doesn't teach, to do well read each chapter (12 of em) 3 times each and slowly enough to understand (Details are important)and the Book is Extremely Boring. Tests are 3 hours long and 20 pages (M.C and Long Problems which are really insane), few quizzes that aren't that bad, and homework due every other day.
Nice guy but Bad Professor, he doesn't teach at all, in order to learn read the book at-least 3 times and read it very slowly (the book is painfully boring). The Tests are 3 hours long, 20 pages and involve M.C and Long Problems, the later which is really difficult. Not to mention homework due every other day. Difficult class bad Professor.
It's a hard class. Prior to taking his class, quit your job because you will have to spend at 10-15 hours a week to do homework and study for extremely hard exams...
Well, everything there's to say about him has been said. The only advice I can give you is what he will say in his speech the first day of class: "If you want to do well, hit this course hard from the beginning and keep up with it." Exams are 3 hrs long, HW is long as well. Good luck, there will be someone else for 316 next sem. though!
It's a very hard class. He scares u, saying if you work more than 20hrs a week you wont do well. Don't listen it only depends on your work ethic. I took 4 classes this semester 1 being Fin 300 w/ Brown while working 25hrs a week & got all As this semester. Do the homeworks & read! It was stressful but if I can do that, then you can pass this class.
If you decide to take Leventhal's class, make sure you break up with your partner, quit your job, and register only for one course. You will end up spending 20hrs a week on homework/studying, only to find out the test is nothing like what you studied for. On a positive note his curve is generous and he juggles change in his pocket during lectures
I have passed both 315 & 316, I am happy to say I never have encounter taking this prof every again. Awful, doesn't care about his students, doesn't teach. I dreaded this teacher & class everyday, he made my life extremely stressful. He made it so unenjoyable & you work so hard just to simply pass, frustrating!!
This class...just put me through pure misery... The difficulty... I can't describe it with words. If there was no curve, everyone would easily be getting D's and F's. I barely got a C. Cheers to everyone that's taking him this fall..
I don't know what others are talking about, but this professor is the best Actg professor I've had!! Just a little bit of work, and you will get an easy A! No textbook required! :]
Prof. Leventhal is one of the better professors I've had. The class is difficult, and the tests are a bit tricky, and there is a LOT of homework. Still, this class is nowhere near as impossible as other reviewers are complaining. He gives a generous curve, and the material tested is clearly stated in the syllabus.
Problems on exams are more tougher than problems assigned for homework and reviewed in class. To pass Intermediate Accounting 315 touch by Brian Leventhal, you need to work extremely hard, from the very start of the course, and solve an enormous number of problems in home, not including those assigned for homework. This is one of most toughest courses
You fools. Just wait until 316, you'll wish you had him back. I learned so much in his 315 class, yes you obviously have to work a lot but it's worth it. It sucks for some of us who have to pick up the 316 part of the CPA exam in the review course.
It seems like he genuinely wants students to understand the material, it is just hard stuff to understand. He doesn't take attendance, but I recommend doing the homework and coming to every class. Most classes are spent going over homework, but that is the best way to learn the material. Test questions are harder than hw questions though.
Leventhal himself is not a bad person. He knows his stuff very well, and LOVES T-ACCOUNTS. It is important to take it serious from the beginning because you have homework due after your first class. His tests are super hard, you really need 2 know your stuff. He really does want the students to know this material & is welcoming during office hours
Tough class, you have to study really hard to pass. But the curve is very generous and you'll definitely learn a lot and appreciate accounting more.
If you are in school, hopefully its because you are trying to learn. Leventhal will make sure you do. The class is challenging, and you MUST do all the reading and hw to do well. I really liked his class. Study hard and you will get an A.
This is a HARD class that is a LOT of work, so accept that right of the bat. Class time is generally spent reviewing the homework. Doesn't say attendance is mandatory, but by the end of the semester he was collecting some sort of homework every week so it was necessary to be there. Overall, fair teacher for a hard class.
he just go over with the power points and homework. he doesn't explain the homework very well. some homework questions are not even explained in the book. if homework is hard, much more in his tests. his tests are brutal. my other classes were left behind. still, i only got a passing grade. :| i'm glad i'm done with 315. goodluck guys! :D
you gotta understand that it's is a weedout class for those that think that accounting is a joke. it's basically his job to make sure no idiots get into this field. he's a great guy and teaches well but if you really want to do accounting, you're gonna have to do a lot of work on your own. asking him for help outside of class will help A LOT g'luck
Very challenging and time consuming class. Homework is due every class and takes a few hours to complete. This professor is very helpful although he doesn't have much time in class to explain everything. His lectures are very interesting. Great Professor. I wish we had more professors like him
Great Professor. It is a very difficult class and material is not easy to understand, but Laventhal does everything that is possible to help you. His quizzes are not very hard and you will know exactly what will be on it in advance. Exams are very hard but he curves a lot. Work hard and don't give up.
Very difficult class. Exams are tough and so are quizzes. Make sure you do homework and study it. Don't give up.
Well, well, well. Let me start by saying every one of these comments is true. This class is going to put you through so much stress and think about changing majors but just keep going at it. At the end of the semester I realized I learned so much. Huge curve. He claims homework is the way to study but tests are always a curveball. Good luck
Prof. Leventhal is a great professor. Sure the class is said to be difficult but with his lectures, things become easy to understand. The class is a lot of work but if you work hard everything should be fine.
This class will be hell, I thought it would never end but honestly Leventhal is one of the best if not the best accounting teacher I've had. He taught me how to think and not just learn how to do something, but why!! Homework took forever, quizzes are super quizzes and exams are packets. Don't get discouraged. Stay in the class, keep working hard. I got an A but I worked my behind for it. Read read read the book and do the homework over and over. Good luck!!
Yes, this course will be challenging! BUT, if you "read the book" practice your hw and ASK q in class or in office hours I think you will be short of excuses on why you didn't get an A. Make sure you carefully READ his q's since he will test to see if you think outside the box. Best of luck!
Great Professor! Wants his students to succeed and is welcoming during office hours.315 is a hard class! Read the questions carefully- they're tricky! Learn how to solve the problems bc most of the exams q's are problems Don't focus on memorizing little details from book. Wish he taught 316. I learned so much in his class.STUDY HARD.Good luck!
Ridiculously hard class, home work is nothing like the tests but there are generous curves given. Be prepared to teach yourself everything and read the book. When he says you'll need 20 hours of study time on the side he isn't lying!
Took Leventhal's 315 class years ago, and can honestly say that even though a lot of the stuff he taught was difficult, and required a lot of dedication it helped me a lot in my corporate career and will help a ton if studying for the CPA.
If you do not pass this class, or make at least a B-- do everyone a favor and do not be an accountant. It is obviously not meant for you. This class is challenging but not difficult if you can understand accounting concepts.
This class is HARD. But the worst part about it is its NOTHING like 210/211 where they teach you everything in lecture. He doesn't lecture, he just goes over the homework. You basically have to teach yourself everything and do a ton of homework before every class. Its tough, but doable. He is a really good professor tho. You'll learn alot.
He is a good guy and wants you to do well, but the class is very difficult. Only one quiz all year had an average above 50%. Some pop quizes. HW can be very tough. I spent at least 10-15 hours a week doing hw.
What makes this course hard is that he doesn't lecture much, mostly just goes over homework. But the material itself is not too bad. However, he is very helpful if you approach him with questions. If you're the type who can't learn on your own, be prepared to camp out in his office.
Show up to class if you want to waste your time. He goes over the hw for the entire class almost everyday unless there is a quiz. If you are the type of person who is not able to learn the material through the book he pretty much just lets you mess up the homework first so that you don't get the pts, then he teaches you how to do them...
ALRIGHT. Here's the short and sweet on 315. Treat the book as a bible. Don't expect to learn a thing in class, master material BEFORE class. Go to tutoring from day 1. Leventhal is ill and cancels class a LOT. Find a struggle buddy ASAP & study together. Master the accounting cycle/reversing entries before the semester begins. Don't fall behind.
He is really.. really.. not good at explaining concepts His handwritings are... wow....( so hard to read his messy handwritings) Everybody has to study so hard just to pass this class.
Talks too fast, doesn't give us enough time to write stuff down, is always making errors on everything (thoroughly go through your tests/quizzes/etc), never answers e-mails... He was the only option. Long story short, he sucked.
doesnt lecture. rushes. just goes over hw which is helpful at times but sometimes not. needsssss to lecture more. comes late and always unprepared.
Just gives answers to homework in class, does some lectures, but it does not help at all. The only reason to show up to class is just incase he will collect homework, and you also print out a whole tree by the end of the semester. Exams require a lot of scratch work, such as making up income statements from numbers provided. He does curve the exams
dont take him, trust me
Prof. Leventhal is an embarrassment to UIC. He disrespects his students by consistently coming to class/ exams late or cancelling class 10 min after class end. Homework is extensive (6-60 problems) ,difficult, and given with no explanation. He is also inadequate at letting you know what will be on the exams. He should not be allowed to teach.
Worst accounting professor at UIC. He is inconsiderate of his students with his homework policy. He doesnt teach, always cancels classes, and has a terrible handwriting. DONT TAKE HIM! As stated he should not be allowed to teach.
He is unprofessional. Shows up late to 8am lectures almost always, meaning he doesnt care bout his students. Posts HW a day before it's due. Doesn't posts grades. In terms of lectures, he's below average. Mainly goes over online HW which doesn't help on tests/quizzes. Showed up late to exams. SHOULD NOT BE TEACHING IN COLLEGE. DONT TAKE HIM!
The worse teacher I have taken in 5 years of being a student! Does not post grades, so you will not know what you have in class until it's over. Don't get me started of trying to reach him. In the whole semester I sent him 5 emails and not one was returned! DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Lot's of homework. Shows up late and unprepared. Does not email you back. Horrible handwriting. Lectures are useless, have to learn on your own. Book required. Does curve exams.
Pros: - the curve - you get 10-20 points if he collects hw/takes attendance - if you get 70%+ on the hw you get full credit Con: - cancels class last minute, which sucks if this is your first class &you're a commuter (99% of the time i was already at school when i received his email) - hw is long - he uses lectures to fly through hw answers
Absolutely horrible professor. Doesn't teach you a thing and only goes over homework in class, after its completely, without any guidance. The book will be your best friend if you want to pass the class.
