very nice person, but very bad at explinations of both what the work was, and what he was looking for when turning assignments. be this man's friend but not his student.
I have/had him for this class online and I found that if you ask for help or clarification, he is very helpful. He's also a very cool guy, and I've learned a lot about life through this class.

He definately has an agenda. For some reason, he seems to bring the weird possibility that the author or characters were possibly gay! He seems to be obsessed about it, too.
While the class was challenging, I think that in the end, it really helped me a lot with my writing. He was available for help when needed, but I will admit that he can be somewhat biased and is very gossipy. It should also be known that his attendance policy is lacking in compassion-greatly.
Brian is a cool guy. Even though he had a huge class, he had enough energy to invest into each student, giving back very helpful feedback. It is a very difficult class, tho I got an A, but his syllabus is very clear (a little intimidating at first), but doable. Yeah, whatever, he's gay and likes to conspire but its cool
Probably the worst teacher I've ever had. For some reason he feels his class is the only one that should be important and if you don't invest a TON of time into his class he seems to resent you. Id suggest another teacher, or if you have to, another class. (If you really like his class and lots of time to invest it's way easy to get an A)
If you like homework you will love Mr. Lewis.
Only take this class if you really want to become better at writing. Although it can be demanding I feel I learned a lot. I would highly suggest taking the web-enhanced class, we didn't have to do computer lab time, and also had less seat-time. He really seems to care about making it easy while still pushing us to do better.
Best teacher ever! Take him whenever you can.
The class was great but he is a total ego maniac!
Best professor at Century--no question. Cute too! :)
He is an egomaniac, will not give you a second chance or accept any excuse no matter what! If you love English and are good at it, take him. If you are not good at English and want to learn it, he will make you learn a lot but will be your worst nightmare in the meantime.
He teaches a level 100 course like its a 400 level or a grad level course. There is a reason for lvl 100 courses, its to sharpen your skills for the upper level courses, it should not be required to write at a grad level in the early stages of ones college writing career. IF YOU CAN AVOID HIM THEN I ADVISE YOU DO SO!!!
I truly appreciated this class and Dr. Brian. He is an excellent writer and gives students top-notch feedback on their drafts. If you want to write an excellent paper, I highly recommend. He has attitude, yes, but who doesn't? :-)
Yikes. This guy's tough. He had us read very offensive things, and assigned a LOT of work, so I don't recommend him.
This is the absolute worst instructor I have had at Century College. He teaches to a few students in the class, which he's had in the past, making no eye contact with the rest. His lectures are really boring along with the class material. The book is dry and boring.
He implies degrading and insulting comments in his online classes. then just uses the excuse of that's how I always have done it and will continue to do so. Then go's on to tell you how willing he is to help you. Not likely that someone that you just insulting is going to ask for your help.
A PhD does not mean the ability to teach. Hard prof - would suggest changes on paper and then grade changes wrong. Does not know how to relate to ELL students with their unique cultural challenges. Won nat'l award for helping students but made it difficult for students in class. Grading scale erratic/unclear-no recourse. ELL do not take his class.
I really loved him after I got to know him. He was a doll. His being gay and proud of it should NOT be a basis of why you did or did not like his class. He was more than fair and will make a person into an exceptional writer. More power to ya, Dr. Brian!
I haven't learned anything from this class! I'm taking it online and most of the assignments involve group work... which defeats the purpose of an online class! He is a very harsh grader and has ridiculous word length requirements for papers and his deadlines are ridiculous. I would not recommend him!
Terrible professor. I felt completely unsupported & ignored in his class. Asks questions with a very specific answer in mind, ignores "wrong" answers. Cuts students off and interrupts mid-sentence. EXTREMELY condescending & slighting. 4 wks into the semester, started telling students with C grades to drop the class. Way to believe in your students.
Decided to drop me from his class because I was less than 10 minutes late the first day, and in order to be counted "present" you have to be in class right on the dot for him. Except it was the first day, so I had no way of knowing his policy. School policy is to drop students who don't go to the first week of class. 10 mins late = dropped.
Remember to keep the source in mind when you read these reviews. I know for a fact that the person who posted below me was dropped because he didn't do any coursework. Isn't it sad when people can't take personal responsibility and blame others for their failures? Brian's classes are challenging - if you don't like challenge, DON'T GO TO COLLEGE.
Difficult course, he'll refer you to the writing center if you have any basic questions. Brian is a nice man but has aura of arrogance around him. And, for classroom examples...Brian, leave the LGBT issues at the door. They have no place in an entry level English class.
Best decision you will ever make in your college career is avoiding brian lewis at all costs. I agree with the person who said he needs to leave all the lgbt issues at the door. Got an A in his class, but had to work VERY hard for it.
accidentally gave him 2's... was supposed to be 1's... wish it could be zeros
I think it is despicable that the lazy students of Century are whining because they did poorly in Brian's class. It isn't his fault you don't want to put the effort in to the class. Yes, it is difficult because it is designed to make you think. Try it sometimes. Brian is a great teacher, and he has motivated and inspired me.
People who do not intend to work hard and learn shouldn't take this class. If you don't want to do what is required of you, that doesn't make Brian a bad teacher. Brian's classes were fun and insightful, one of my favorites. Lazy people need not apply. Brian is a great teacher.
Singles out students he doesn't like daily. Claims to be willing to help during his office hours, but only if it has to do with a paper you're writing, as he prioritizes classwork related meetings over actual grade-related meetings
This guy is not helpful at all, and if you have a question don?t bother because he will be so condescending when he talks to you that you might just lose your cool.
Wow!I'm surprise that not alot of people cared for his class.I for one liked him and how he taught his class. For sure you have to WORK for your grade. For helpfulness, he was helpful and willing to help and talk things through with his students. I would take him again if I needed to take another English class! :)
He believe he is a good teacher, yet he does single out individual people he don't like. He took me and couple students out and talk to because he assumed we copied each other's topic essay..OMG..LAME.
I stated about going on a vacation and he stated that I didn't log in so he dropped me out of the class.
Dont ever take english online,u have to be willing to work hard & think to do well. Its college after all. He'll help you but u have to be willing to listen to what he says & think outside ur comfort zone sometimes. If u r serious about school take him he will help you further your eduaction he grades like your at Harvard but thats not a bad thing.
Great!
He is the best! He'll always help you if you are having trouble understanding something.
Great teacher! It's a tough class, but it's college... Leaving his class I feel like I've become a much stronger and confident writer. He doesn't hand out A's. You have to work pretty hard for them, but that should be expected. You shouldn't expect just to show up to class and pass, please. I'd take his class again in a heartbeat!
He's a good teacher, but an extremely tough one. Like the others have said, if you want to be a better writer, want a lot of hw, and is willing to do a lot of hw, he's not so bad.
Gives a lot of participation points but only focuses on the few that answer every question. No one else is included in discussions. Over analyzes everything. his way or no way. I don't recommend this class/ prof.
I don't agree with the last post at all. I loved the comics class and thought it was a lot of fun. The reading material was great.
Brian is very particular about the conclusions that are made when you analyze the texts in class, he usually ends with his own opinion. He's quite strict when it comes to the discussion boards. Keep up on discussions, reading, attend class, and you should be fine. He will assign a video project, be very confident in your partner, or do it yourself.
Brian was my professor for Comics as Literature and I enjoyed the class very much -- it was easy, he was passionate about the material.. However, I did the honors project for his class and he hasn't responded to anything I've sent him for a week or so now, so I'm kind of pissed off about that. He's a good teacher though, work hard in his class!
Not a great teacher. Class was hard, which is fine, it's college, but he is not helpful and kind of childish about things. Would never recommend him.
Brian's tough, but he's a good person!
He treats this as a college-level writing course. You have to work to get a good grade, yes, but he gives you a handout for each paper outlining his exact expectations. If you attend class, participate and work with him, you will do well. Lots of complaints from others who just didn't want to work, but he is great and prepared me well to move on.
Instructor was late to mandatory meetings and blamed me. Very difficult to understand what he wants from the student. He seemed more interested in GLBT than in the lesson plan. DO NOT for any reason take any of his classes.
Do NOT take this class if you want to keep your sanity! His testing expectations are ridiculous! The midterm and final consisted of 3 parts totaling about 8 hours. Also, he's very particular about papers and grades very slanted. Only one person in the class received an A grade. If you want to take this class, take it with someone else!
I do not recommend Brian. His final took me 8 hours to complete, but he found in unnecessary to give his students a heads up. (I had to call into work.) Also, its an online course, but almost all of the extra credit is on campus- I live 4 hours away, what?! You can't question his teaching or beliefs or you will be reprimanded. Terrible professor.
I'm not sure if the last two students took the same course I did. The student before me complains about extra credit--well, how many teachers even OFFER it? And so he gave a long exam, oh boo hoo--this is college, what do you expect? He *did* give us 24 hours to complete it--open-book, open-note.
Brian is a good guy. His classes are not easy and you learn a lot. Comp 2 taught me how to write a decent paper. WGST was a ton of work and he is very opinionated about things. He doesnt let people discuss, he talks over others opinions. He is very controlling about every aspect of class(i.e. we're all adults and can't pick our own group partners?)
He is a very cool professor but is very strict when it comes to work. I recommend taking notes of what you read in the chapters assigned in order to do well on the quizzes D2L. The group discussions are very helpful and the final project is a pain. The things you learn are interesting but this class can be time consuming.
Comp 1 was alright. The papers do suck but the professor is pretty cool. It is mandatory that you attend class because it is part of your grade. When writing papers, he is always asking for more information. He wants you to write your papers in depth. The class is time consuming because of the papers. Overall, it was alright.
When he grades papers, he gives unclear feedback and its not helpful to the next paper(s) you will write.
I would say that if your planning to take this class with Mr. Lewis you must be ready to put forth lots of effort and understand he is not there to give you perfect grades. He wants to see you become a better writer so his grading scale is relatively steep. He is a very opinionated person which makes him very critical. Very strict but overall ok
I really disliked this professor. I enjoyed the readings. Lectures were long and he takes forever to get to his point of what he is trying to say. There is weekly quizzes and "paragraphs" that get redundant. He is a harsh essay grader!!!
American Lit with Brian Lewis isn't exceptionally hard, if you know what you're doing and put the effort it your grade will reflect that. Obviously you'll need to read a lot as it's a literature class, but I found the reading interesting and engaging. He's a college level grader when it comes to essays. Comp 1 & 2 are a must-have.
He's not bad, but sometimes I feel he can be too aggressive with grading. He's also goes into too much detail about personal things. Grading is harsh but decent, and if you try hard enough you'll pass. I wouldn't say that you shouldn't take his classes, but be careful if you do.
This is probably one of the most frustrating class's I have ever taken. He is a VERY strict grader that docks you points for EVERY little thing. I would say unless you plan to go into writing as your major and want a challenge than don't take his class. Essays are long and resources are rather restricted. Be prepared to read a lot and write A LOT!
His way or no one's way.
His way or the highway. No exceptions! I was sick and emailed the homework to him. All he emailed me back was stating he will not accept it and I am dropped from class.
First time reading the criteria and I thought I understood. But then I would receive a graded paper and behold! Every single mistake no matter how small was like a mortal wound on the grade. In an E-mail I had sent begging for help he told me "I wouldn't even bother attempting the final." Instead of TRYING in any way too see that every point counts
Brian is personable and one of my favorite professors I've had. I continuously got B's and A's as he explained very clearly why I received a D on my first paper. I'd highly recommend as long as you're willing to DO THE WORK RIGHT! Brian worked with me as I had to stop class 2 weeks early which was wonderful - he really cares about your success!
Not good with guidelines. Won't accept anything , won't take "no" for answer.
Well, it's against RMP rules to say a prof shows bias. What I can tell you as a grown adult that otherwise has exceptional grades, however, is good luck in your continued search for classes. I was really happy with Villegas and Jones, because of how professional they were in grading students.
Pretty easy to pass as long as you read on your own. The papers are the most important, however i would recommend going to the writing center if you want feedback on content and not just on the basic grammar and spelling. Has a few presentations in front of class. Tends to talk about food or eat while he's talking to the class. explains reading.
I know what goes into getting good grades in hard classes, and I sincerely question the C grades he gave me. When I went in to talk to him about it, I got talked to like a teenager even though I'm about the same age as him. People here have had positive experiences though. Thus I warn you they might be just as right as I am in saying he's bad news!
He is extremely condescending and treats you like he is your lesser. The way requirements for his papers are radically different then how he grades them.
Mileage may vary with Brian... you talk to people, and get the impression that it's as if you have a different prof than others. Brian grades the way he sees fit. So, warning: you're taking an academic risk investing time in any of his courses. I feel like there is a lot for me to frown about his grading... it's not rigorous-- it's something else.
I took his class in WGS. the class itself was good, however the way he taught it was not helpful. I felt that I was taking two classes at the same time. we wrote papers and he was really picky if you did not follow the rules as he said it. Brian will not really appreciate if you work hard.
The material itself isn't hard but he assigned so much reading every week and it was super overwhelming. Online discussions make or break your grade in this class so make sure you read the materials and post good discussions with comments to other students because you can use your responses on the exams, and they are all short answer questions.
The curriculum does not surround composition at all. He made it about other cultures and talks about his trip to China/how cultured he thinks he is anytime he gets the chance. Your papers are not graded on grammar, punctuation, structure or formatting. They are graded on if he feels that you answer his vague prompt with a "cultural" perspective.
Mr. Lewis takes his job seriously and is very rigid in his grading. To be fair, he is very clear on what he's looking for which makes him the toughest grader I've had to date. He does not hesitate to knock off an unreasonable amount of points if you simply miss a comma, but if you figure out what he likes it is possible to get an A. Good luck!
Brian is a hard grader with a condescending air. He is easy to access via email which was appreciated, but the information given in class was irrelevant. He likes to focus a LOT on LGBTQ culture (wrong class for this) and found sexual innuendos in EVERY text we read. Other students agreed that it was inappropriate. Overall everyone was frustrated
He is a very rigid grader. He once said to me that no one gets a hundred percent in the class and then procede to take off eleven points on the first paper because I had three sentence fragments. He CONSTANTLY talks about china and its his way or the highway.
He always talks about China and its annoying. He is a very very tough grader and made me cry my first day of classes. He gives you lots of weekly homework. Lots of extra credit only can get 20 points though. He always finds something wrong with stuff. He yells at this students sometimes and makes things awkward.
Brian has no respect for any of his students and treats them as if they are all in high school. If you make a suggestion to him about changing something you are confused about, he will immediately shoot you down. I am pretty sure that he grades based on how much he likes you. He is a horrible teacher and I frequently question his sanity.
Brian grades based on whether he likes what you wrote or doesnt, not in the educational sense either. He is very sassy and definitely thinks there are such things as dumb questions and he will make it known. He talks about China a lot. His classes go from being full to having less than half left by the end of the semester.
Grades based on whether or not he likes you and the topic of your paper, hardly at all on the quality of the paper. I wrote a fantastic paper and he gave me a C-. There are also writing center assignments every week that HAVE to be done in the WC. Quizzes also only have one try.
He tells you one thing but grades you totally different. I went to him every time he was in the writing center and he gave me good feedback. He would tell me it was a very good paper just at needed a little more work. I would go back and change everything he told me to and gives me a C on the essay. Very harsh grader. I do not recommend.
very good teacher, focuses on culture. Helps individuals when needed, really nice and funny. Will definitely be open to help you, he really does care about his students. Wants everyone to receive a good grade. Class is fun, and you learn something new everyday.
The entire class is a confusing mess, the professor is often vague with unclear instructions and requirements for papers that are absurd. The textbook TSIS is a mess of bad suggestions that are baffling, with entire chapters meandering about nonsense. Essays and quizzes are also dropped with little explanation while discussions are meaningless.
Gives very vague instructions and then gives bad grades for not meeting his expectations. Requires that everyone uses discussion boards. Attempted to give me a lower grade because I didn't respond to enough discussion boards, but none of my classmates posted discussions to respond to. Would not recommend.
There were 4 essays focused on cultural issues that require a lot of research from hard-to-use database sources. One was on the election. He graded my essay based off of his opinion (I received a D). Assignments were time-consuming. He responded promptly to emails which was helpful but overall, would not recommend his class...
The 5 essays for the course are on controversial social issues. Things seemed to be one sided at times. Grading is extremely tough. For example I took another class where over the course of 8 papers I missed a total of 4 points, not claiming to be a great writer but I'm decent. However in this class the highest grade I got on a paper was a 72%
He made a huge deal out of things when you got questions wrong and acted like you were stupid. Unclear grading rubrics and would tell you your essay was good only to give you a poor grade. Does offer essay corrections but overall do not take a class with him, especially if you don't like being passive-aggressively yelled at.
Hes by far one of the most challenging teachers Ive had. Hes overall not very nice. He called me around 8pm to yell at me and has made me cry multiple times. He says he likes your essay and then gives you a bad grade. Hes very judgmental and isnt very kind while he teaches. He was even rude to a guest speaker. He does offer extra credit tho
Will make you feel stupid for asking questions. Is not clear about what he wants in a paper. Grades based off of his opinions not educational based. He should not be a comp teacher. A comp class should not be this hard. Essays topics are weird and stupid. He is the hardest grader Ive ever had and probably will ever have. Do not take his class
Brian was very specific about everything but wouldnt ever out right tell you what he wanted. Also very prone to humiliating students when they dont know the answer, will stop class for up to five minutes waiting for the answer he wants from a student. Gets mad when you dont understand or when you have questions.
Horrible teaching style, not nice at all to students. He definitely favors certain people. Threatens to kick you out of class for just about anything. Sadly was stuck with him even though I signed up for another teacher. Would not recommend anyone having to deal with him.
The worst professor you can ever take a class with. Harshly grades papers. I went to the writing center to see what I am doing wrong. They said they would grade my paper and A grade. I would highly suggest getting a different professor. If all professor isn't available, don't even use him as a last resort.
Looks for a specific answer when interpreting Literature when everyone should be allowed to interpret it the way they see it.
Brian Lewis is one of the worst professors/teachers Ive ever had. Very rude and passive aggressive towards fellow classmates, constantly interrupted group discussions and barley let anyone talk. Very harsh grader and Only looks for the answers he wants to hear, he would even stop class until he hears it. Do not take any of his courses.
Pedagogically one of the weakest literary instructors I have encountered. Passive aggressive, not actually knowledgeable and boring lectures. Has no sense of pacing or that other ideas besides his exist. I got points taken off for not being mean enough in discussions.Avoid because I want you to love literature and this person will kill it.
Although this course is difficult, I find the professor to be very informative. I can tell the professor works very hard as there's a lot that goes into the course from discussion forums, writing plans, suggestions, online lectures, and extra credit opportunities. I hope I can complete this course with a decent grade.
He is a tough grader, as an A student in high school trying to receive an A+ is pretty challenging. He is very selective on how you write: grammar, content, distinguishing voices. You also have to go to the writing center for a total of 750 min. He requires books and reading matters. Quizzes are every other week. Reading and quiz heavy.
He is incredibly difficult to work with. When people warned me not to take him I should have listened because he is not a reliable person at all! He doesn't like it when you agree with others in discussion boards and will give you a C on it. He thinks he's superior to everyone. DO NOT TAKE HIM! This is the first B I received in College.
Brian is condescending and argumentative. He has to have the last word and will actively take away from students' time to do the work he gives every class period. He is very particular about what he thinks is good writing; if you don't do exactly what he wants, you will fail. A C is average and if you care about your GPA he is not for you.
Absolute worst professor I have ever had. Will NEVER take any class with him again. Incredibly rude, passive aggressive and unwilling to help you or hear your side of anything. Extremely harsh and argumentative especially in discussions. felt very uncomfortable going to him to ask questions or get help. Very confusing and vague expectations.
Mr. Lewis is a very strict grader who treats his students like high schoolers. He forces his students to go to the writing center for 50 minutes a week and is very mean to students. Today we worked on an in-class writing assignment, and he was nitpicking our essay. After he looked at everyone's essay, he got angry and started yelling at everyone.
Very tough grader and a C in his class is an A in most others. I learned a lot and my writing skills improved greatly from his class but it was tough and took a lot of my time. Requirements included having to go the writing center and that only took more of my time and reduced flexibility. Don't take it unless you're okay with your GPA dropping.
Not an easy feat to get an "A" in this class. Very tough grader, although I can view this as a good thing, because I learned a lot about composition as a result of having to work harder. Weekly quizzes and discussion boards, which are easy, but dont forget to do them; very unforgiving, won't let you make up work. Gives ok feedback but nitpicks alot
He is too precise with grading, one small error and he'll bring your entire grade down. For ex, on discussion work you'll get a 0 if you don't do a self assessment, that is basically a SURVEY! Instead of grading the completed work, he only grades if you do one small survey that serves no purpose to the course.
The assignments aren't difficult, but it is the professor that is!!! His syllabus considers late work, but when I emailed him he denied any late work. This course was taken in the summer, so the workload can be excused but the grading and requirements are the issue. Also, his materials aren't organized on d2l, they aren't placed together.
Don't enroll in any courses taught by Brian Lewis. Has an attitude, is disrespectful, and believes he's correct. If you don't take the self-assessment quiz, he will fail you and give you no credit for the discussions you already completed. His feed's announcements, syllabus incredibly outdated. Latework results in zero, Nomakeups, Hasanattitude.
The announcements and curriculum on his class feed are severely outdated. because he frequently announces dates that are not in the current year. When you email him about this error, he responds with a negative attitude. He gave me a failing score for one of his modules because he claims I viewed half, not 80% of the discussions. Very disrespectful
Was a horrible professor. Was my first year doing PSEO and was unfamiliar with the whole college thing. He was very unhelpful and tore into all of my writing's kind of like a high school bully. Said they were all horrible and that I'm not working hard enough when I was putting in countless hours into his ONE CLASS.
Do NOT take this guy's course. I just hopped off a "mandatory Zoom meeting" with him to look over my essay and he not only tore into how bad my essay was (didn't give me any credit for the extremely hard work I put into it) but he proceeded to tell me that this Zoom meeting was a waste of his time. He's so pretentious and snarky.
Mr. Lewis is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. Not only did he care about participation more than the essays we wrote, but he also made us read 80% of others' work and respond to two others. During the required Zoom meetings, he would rave to me about "how good I am at writing" but then gave me at most an 80% on an essay I submitted.
Definitely the hardest course I ever took (3x accelerated during the Summer) but it was definitely worth it. Brian Lewis gave good insight on discussions posts and reached out to me to make sure I didn't get withdrawn from the class (hadn't done work in a while). Very tough, but I learned a lot and enjoyed the course.
I want other students to know they should avoid this class at all costs. He assigns a lot of papers and of all the ones Ive done so far, Ive gotten a C- and the only comments are about punctuation and grammar and not on the actual content of the essay itself. Take Creative Writing with literally anyone else.
I have nothing good to say about Brian Lewis. He teaches you one thing and then you do that thing and he finds a million other nitpicks about what you did and then barely passes you.
Super passive-aggressive, doesn't give out As.
I'm not someone who gets upset when a course is challenging, but this class was simply frustrating. The content wasn't necessarily hard, but there's LOT of assignments. The professor grades VERY hard on essays and doesn't give good feedback unless you ask extremely specific, clear questions. He was also disrespectful and talked down to me.Don't take.
Grading is not done well. I had a hard time with some assignments and the feedback was not the best either. There was a book we had to read for some assignments and in my opinion it was very inappropriate due to graphic images in the book. I also had a hard time getting conferences scheduled due to open slots. I work full time and it got tough.
The absolute worst teacher I've ever had the displeasure of having. For starters, his grading policies are so unclear. There is not objective way he grades. It's all based on what he feels like. The assignments are organized in the worst way possible. If anyone is reading this, please don't take him as a teacher for any reason. Trust me.
Brian is someone who is way too obsessed with his work life. He will pick apart and ridicule every piece of the work you do. You aren't given any grace and you will be expected to be perfect. Also the kind of professor to say that if you do good work you'll get a C because that's "meeting expectations" Do not recommend
Professor Lewis is quite strict, but I found Unstuck study and the free textbook helpful for staying on top of the workload. The class is challenging, but engaging if you put in the effort.
Brian was THE worst professor I've ever had for a course.. I chose the online course. You have to post 2 discussions each week and it ends with a quiz. He expects you to read every single reply. (Around 80 per discussion) he also yelled at a fellow co worker of mine and has a “aggressive customer” on his name. Now I know why.
