Pretty cool teacher that tries to make Economics interesting. Tests are based on the lectures so if you take notes you will do well.
Kept economics interesting. I learned a lot. The only downfall was that it was a summer class, so I didn't get a feel for his grading style with just a midterm, and a final project & exam due on the last day of class. He's a funny guy. I'd recommend him.
Great person, great professor,u can learn a lot from him cause he actually has real experience, very pleasant, straight forward, helpful outside the class, i would take his class again
Great!
I would take him again.
He made economics interesting... how many people can do that?
Yuck! Had him for Stat and Econ, a much better Econ teacher than stat, his book was awful, take another Stat teacher, but for Econ, he was great.
He was an excellent professor. Really knows what he is doing and I would recommend him to any student.
Most important thing about this class is to study notes!!! Don't read from the book. Study his notes and you will do fine on the tests!
Great professor. He made economics interesting and easy to understand. Very helpful in and outside of class. Tests based mostly on notes, but don't neglect the book, read what he tells you and do the homework, easy A.
EXTREMELY GREAT CLASS, GREAT TEACHER. MAKES SURE EVERYONE GETS IT. DON'T USE THE BOOK, ALL NOTES FOR THE EXAM.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! He is the most awful teacher ever. He has no clue what he is talking about and he makes the exams extremely difficult, just to confuse you more. He teaches economics at ASU West campus and everyone hates his class. Stay away from him, especially his Macroeconomics class.
GREAT TEACHER. MAKES IT CLEAR. GO TO CLASS! MOST EXAM IS ON LECTURES.
Plain talk
Extremely boring, but test is all lecture materials. Tests are the same from old semesters just re-arranged. Reasonable grader.
Good beginner class on Macroeconomics. Very difficult to fail this class if actually attend class. The book was semi useful but he covers everything on his tests in his lectures which were very clear and occasionally funny. He likes tight pants though, ouch - didn't want to see that.
The two people below that said he is boring and claim that everyone hates him probably failed the class. Dr. Macfie is anything but boring (very funny guy) and everyone that I know can't wait to take his class. He teaches economics and statistics with great clarity. One of the best professors that I ever had (and I did not get an A from him).
I had him for stats last semester and have him for microeconomics. Econ is way better to take with him than stats. His stats book is horrible- first edition with a ton of mistakes- I guess not enough money to print updated version. Talks a LOT but makes sense. Don't piss him off- he's got a temper!!
Looks like a gym teacher. He's high energy and sometimes funny. His exam questions are worded a bit tricky and often have several seemingly correct answers. Even so its easy to get a good grade as he curves until the class average is 80.
Just had him for Labor Economics and thought he was great. I read some of those other evals. He really does look like a gym teacher. Some of those other evals that say he's terrible are crazy. He knows his stuff and is very clear. He can be really fummy.
I thought Mr. Macfie was a great professor. I actually understood what he was teaching because he taught it VERY well. The review sessions were very helpful and I know everyone appreciated them. I am so satisfied with Mr. Macfie that I already enrolled in his Macroeconomics class this fall. Awesome professor!
Seems like he BS's a lot of material, but really know the subject. Nice and fair; he makes deserving adjustments.
This is a GREAT teacher. He is very knowledgeable about the subjects and treats everyone fairly. Go to class, he explains everything perfectly. 5 tests, 40 questions multiple choice and a 5 min presentation on a certain subject. Im a horrible public speaker but he helped me through it perfectly. Definitly recommend him. Thanks Professor..
Good guy, but his lectures will put you to sleep. Reminds you of your annoying grandpa who won't stop talking. Former USMC drill sergeant that looks like a Phys Ed. teacher. Exams are very tricky and make up the bulk of the grade, so only take this course if you are a good test-taker. Brian's an honest man and a fair grader, so I'd recommend him.
I thought he did teach phs ed on the side. I didn't think his exams were tricky at all and I enjoyed listening to him (he does talk a lot though, but not ay all boring). If you take notes and don't talk to the person next to you while he is talking you'll do fine. He's one of the better eco profs I have taken at ASU. On a scale of ten he's a 9.5.
Just a great guy
Dr. Mac is one of the best. I can?t believe how disrespectful some of the evaluations below are. To the person who says he reminds you of your annoying grandpa, is that how you feel about your grandfather? Or the one who says he BS's a lot of material, does that mean if he says something you didn?t know it can?t be true? Dr. Mac is a 9.5 out of 10.
Test questions are often incomprehensible. Gave too many online exams and continued to do so even after repeated bouts of cheating that allowed for the majority of students to group test and score higher than honest students who took the exams alone. I'm dreading taking stats and micro from him.
I wish he gave our 211 class those online tests, but I think he said he only did it in one class as an experiment. High energy and always talking, but makes an awful lot of sense. He should run for Governor. Go to class, take notes and don't talk to the person next to you during class and you'll do fine. I'm taking him for stat next semester.
I took him for Micro/ Macro / Labor econ/ and I did a independent study with him. He is a great guy. Test are tricky, but if you attend lectures and listen, the reading the questions. you'll hear his voice in ur head almost. I highly recommend.
The tests correspond very little with the books, power points, or lecture. No way to prepare for his tests. Spends lecture time discussing irrelevant topics. Uses vulgar language and is combative when asked a question. Lacks basic teaching skills.
Great class. Attend class and you will do well on the test. He words the questions on his tests exactly how he talks in class so if you attend you will do fine. If you plan on skipping out and just trying to read your book, you will not do well. He wears short short shorts, so if you don't wan to see any of that avert your eyes while he teaches
Keep the test packet after every test and keep the test scantrons when he hands them back. His test are from test banks but he seems to selectively pick them to fit what he teaches.
Great teacher and highly recommend. Maybe he's a little unconventional and a bit strict. I was in the same class as the person below and the lecture topics were not irrelevant; minimum wages/unemployment, impact of NAFTA, national health care, how to fix the social security, energy crisis, and the congestion problem in Phoenix, Flat tax, etc...
Just a good teacher. If you mind your P's and Q's (and I don't mean price and quantity) you'll be fine. If you make a snide comment or joke around with the person next to you while he is lecturing, watch out. You will think you were back in boot camp. Fair grader. Tests are hard, but questions come from the lecture (somewhat from than book).
Great guy, extremely nice. Easiest economist professor yet and loves to talk and tell stories. Prepares you very well for tests and tries to make it as easy as possible for you. Always available through email/office hours. GO TO OFFICE HOURS if you need help. He is extremely kind and loves to help and will make sure you are understanding.
Everything on tests comes from the powerpoint slides. Look over it and you'll get an A. He tells interesting stories and is straight forward. Great professor, would recommend.
The tests correspond very little with the books, power points, or lecture. No way to prepare for his tests. Spends lecture time discussing irrelevant topics. Uses vulgar language and is combative when asked a question. Lacks basic teaching skills. Wears thin "short shorts" and sits in front of class with his legs apart. Name caller.
professor was great. as long as you pay attention in class you'll do good. skimmed through the book and just listened in class and was able to get an A. he covers relevent current economic topics and tells good stories that help explain topics. as long as you dont disrupt the class and pay attention you'll do great. i am going to take 212 and 221
I took Labor Econ w/ Dr Macfie, and he is a really nice guy. A few kids in our class complained the tests were too hard, but honestly, they just never paid attention or participated. Those of us who got A's didn't have to spend any time studying for tests at all, we just paid attention in class.
I don't know what these others are referring to about shorts, vulgarity, being combative, or bad teaching skills. They probably angry about their bad grade & picking on Doc Mac. He does wear gym shorts, but they are longer than most students. He is a great teacher. Listen in class and study the ppt slides, you'll do fine. Great real world stories.
So hard
Prof. MacFie did his best to teach a class in a way that it appeared his hands were tied in teaching. He is a good professor - he will call you out if you screw around, disrespect him, or don't pay attention. He works with his students to make sure that they can get the work done, and that they will do well - if they want to.
Grade based on 5 tests and final. He givesstdy guides for all of the tests then goes over them next class. He repeats info so easy to memorize for the test. Got an A without the book. He's great getting class involved, but will single you out if you talk. PPTs on BB for you to print. He curves a LOT so avg. grade is 78. Some tests got curved 10%.
He is a great guy and is very smart but his tests are hard
Macfie is a great professor. He really knows his stuff, and is very intelligent. He comes from corporate research so he's a little less of an ivory tower intellectual than other economics professors, which I liked. I thought his class was pretty easy although I got the third highest grade in the class so maybe I'm not the best to ask about that.
I liked this class and he is a good teacher. Make sure to go to lectures and you will learn alot more. Also his tests were not too bad and he lets you use the book on several of the tests
Dont bother to buy the book he gives PowerPoint slides the tests are tricky and he is too repetitive on things especially when they aren't even on the test.
Macfie is awesome! Keeps things interesting, and repeats important material so you won't miss the point. He curves all the exams so the lowest score is a 60%. As long as you study the powerpoints and skim through the textbook, you'll be good. He also tells us to buy older versions of books so we can save money! had him for macro, micro, and stats
Professor Macfie definitely makes it easy to pay attention and learn in his class. He talks with enthusiasm and keeps the lectures alive and interesting. I recommend him 100% over any other professor because he repeats the things that will be on the test and lets you use a "cheat sheet" on all the tests.
Macfie is okay. His lectures are all from PowerPoints which he posts online. Don't bother reading the book because the tests are based off of the lectures. However, many slides were repetitive and unnecessary which made things a bit confusing. There are 5 tests, 35 questions each, so you can only miss 3 for an A, but you can bring a cheat sheet.
Took this class over the summer in person. Macfie was great at explaining the concepts from the power points. There were 5 multiple choice tests and a final that was a combo of the previous 5 tests. All questions came from the slides, I never cracked the book. Pretty easy A if you come to class.
MacFie definitely knows his stuff, but I ended up with a C. I guess forecasting just really isn't my thing then. Most of the class did fine, and he allows you to bring one page of notes to exams. There is one project, which is fun and useful. I personally found his exams tricky, but most of the class did well on them.
Somewhat hard material, but everything ties together well at the end. 4 multiple choice exams. 1 cumulative final & group project. You can take a 1-sided cheat sheet for exams. The class is manageable & Macfie is a cool guy. Pretty old school. He likes rules of thumb a lot which is nice. If you have to take ECN410/425, take 410 with Macfie.
Pretty easy teacher. I've taken classes with him a few times. As long as you pay attention, you'll do well. The final is made up of questions from the previous tests. No homework, just the tests. Hardest part is knowing what his main points are (which you're tested on) and what is his supporting evidence (ie graphs, not on test)
Not an easy A . If you want a good grade you have to attend lectures whuch were a little boring can't justshow up for the exams and expect to pass.
Very old school military guy that doesn't take crap from anyone (if you talk during class he WILL chew you out), but obviously a big old softie deep down, and very nice to students who earn his respect. Tests are directly from Powerpoints, but he uses trick questions, so you have to understand the concepts instead of just memorizing things.
Easily one of my favorite teachers. He is a great guy and will do all that he can to make sure that the students understand the material. Tests are very fair and directly from the lecturePowerPoint and you can use a page for a cheat sheet. Take his class if you have the opportunity - you will learn a lot! No textbook needed.
Macfie keeps his lectures pretty interesting so class isn't all that boring. He WILL call you out if you talk during his class but other than that, he's a great guy. He even allows a 1 page cheat sheet during tests. Make sure to actually study the powerpoints themselves because he does tend to use a lot of trick questions. Overall, it's an easy A.
I know everyone is split on this teacher. But as for me, Macfie was very straight forward. He said things how they were. All you need to do to pass is just listen during lecture, make a good cheat sheet for exams, and re-read the exam questions to fully understand what he is asking for. Taken this professor twice now, soon to be three times. Easy A
If you are the class clown or just can't resist talking to the guy next to you when he is lecturing, than don't take him. His rule is only one person at a time gets to talk in class. Other than that, he' a great guy. He talks about the real world and is not a stuffy professor. He is really smart and makes you think outside the box. Read the PPT.
He's a nice guy and clearly knows what he's talking about, but I feel like test answers are based on his opinion. I literally copy & pasted his power points onto my cheat sheet so I had all of the information 100% accurate for tests, but I never managed to ever get an A. Mostly C's, which sucks cause your grade is made up of test grades.
Your only grade from the class comes from your exam grades. There's 5, each worth 15% and the Final worth 25%. If you don't show up to lecture or read on your own, passing is difficult.
Just a great guy and know his stuff. Class structure is a little like boot camp, but as long as you behave you're fine. His tests appear hard because the questions require two dimensional thinking on your part. But the questions are far from abstract. The project was the best part and you really learn how regression analysis is used in real world.
Definitely would recommend taking this class online! A few tests that were very straightforward
I would like to start by saying that I have a 4.0 GPA, so I'm not just the usual "complainer." Macfie is incredibly rude and condescending to students asking questions in blackboard. It's an online course and he doesn't allow students to email him. He is unhelpful and exam content is unrelated to the homework. I just dropped the course. Hallelujah.
I am a 4.0 student who started to panic after the first exam in this class!! There is a hallway discussion area for students to get help from each other, but the exam material really caught me by surprise. It is the only class I am worried about this semester..... Weekly quizzes for homework. Three exams--not open book/note.
I feel the same way guys. I am so overwhelmed with the content of this class. I find the teacher to be rude and unhelpful. I bombed the first test and I'm seriously freaking out about this next test coming up. I'm really considering dropping the class. Oh, and by the way, I'm barely on the line to pass the class. The tests are extremely hard!!!!!!
Most of the test questions come from his powerpoints. I stopped attending his lectures because I studied better from the tutors and on my own time. Good person though. He'll get upset with you if you talk during lecture.
He's an okay guy, however I literally copied his powerpoints onto our cheatsheet that we were able to use and still bombed them. Super hard tests and it's so boring. Don't recommend, so glad I dropped the class.
Took Macfie's Class online, he is not involved in the class what so ever, if you email him with questions he will tell you to ask someone else. He does not tell students what material to study for the test, and his tests are completely random and not related to the material at all. Everything is through connect. Avoid taking his class.
I took Macfie back in Freshman year for ECN 210, at that time I really liked him because he is good at lectures with helpful powerpoint slides and crib notes. That is why I decided to take him online for ECN 306. I was completely blindsided by the lack of help and engagement he has for this course. I guess he's not a fan of an online course.
I took the same online class. Dr. Macfie front told everyone several times that this was a self study course. I'm surprised that some reviewers here have the gall to now complain about it. When you ask a question, he gives extra credit to whoever answers it. Everyone gets 100 on the HW which is a 1/3 of the grade. The test avg was 80, why grip?
Easiest class I took this semester. No HW, so you just need to study for tests, which is easy because the min grade you can get is a 60% and you can bring a page of notes for everything, including the final. Just use the powerpoints to study and you can get an A. If you have questions, just email and he'll reply fairly quickly.
Brian Macfie is the least helpful and most inconsiderate professor I've had. He told us that he doesn't intend to give the correct answer nor explain why it's the answer. He even made a statement comparing students to "the enemy." The homework is easy, but tests are deceivingly difficult as they don't relate to hw. Don't take this class.
I took this as a session A summer course, despite being terrified after reading the reviews on here. While Prof. Macfie does say that he doesn't respond to emails, he is very active in the hallway conversations board and gives extra credit to whomever helps answer someone's questions. If you read the textbook, his exams are fairly easy.
Dr. Macfie was great. He explains everything clearly. He gives 4 multiple questions exams and a final, and every question came from the powerpoint slides he shares on blackboard. There are also a group project and a presentation, so pick your team wisely.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE WITH MACFIE! I REPEAT, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE MACFIE! Macfie isn't helpful at all, especially when you email him, his test are harder and more painful than child birth, i have never struggled with a class this much in my life, and yes I did fail. so there's that. save yourself and take it with someone else
The (video) lectures are succinct and informational. Textbook reading is required, but it is easy to read because the subject is interesting. I love my Econ classes, including this one. My only advice is DON'T TAKE THIS ONLINE WITH THIS INSTRUCTOR. This class will ruin your GPA. I was a 3.8, but not after ECN306 with MacFie
you will be deceived by the easy HW thinking the exams will be the same, until you take the first exam and realize you are panicking , A students even complained to him about how misguiding the study guide is, and most of the class did bad. don't take this class online with Macfie, take it in person with a different teacher oh and Macfie is so rude
Absolutely do not take ecn 306 online with Macfie. Tests are completely different then all learning materials. I have done well on all the homework assignments and failed all the tests. I am an economics major and this is the worst experience I have had with a teacher. Will not answer emails or help with homework. Do not take.
This class is awful. Do not take it online with Macfie. The homeworks are ridiculously easy which give you a false sense of understanding. The exams have graphs and math problems that aren't covered on the homework. You are basically walking into the exams blind. The average grade after the curve on one of the exams was still a D. He is really rude
What students have said here previously is accurate. Homework is almost too easy and does not prepare students for difficulty of exams, so the only hope is to read the book and retain large amount of info. For Macfie himself, he came off as rude and almost bothered when sending out class announcements/responding to students in discussion board.
explains in the syllabus exams are going to be hard and that the average is very low. No reason to really complain about the difficulty of the exams when he tells you upfront. The exams are often curved. The class is difficult yes but you only need a 65% to pass. I wouldnt take the course if youre not an econ major or if you have a really high GPA
Do not take this class online worse professor ever. He doesn't like to help students states he only there to monitor the class. The book is not the easiest to understand, homework is really easy however the test are not the same very hard.
Takes pride in not being a nice guy. Not helpful when questions are asked. Grade only based on easy HW and hard exams (which are curved like crazy, thankfully). Textbook, which you have to know like the back of your hand, is difficult to navigate. I'm a 4.0 accounting major and put in an INSANE amount of time/effort to barely get a B in the class.
-Lecture heavy -Never wants you to send him e-mails -Sends rants through announcement board on BB -Rather take a physical class with another professor than this one online -But he curves his exams
Pretty much your entire grade is based on the exams, and all the exam content is based on his lectures, his lecture slides are posted online but you still need to show up to get everything. No trick questions and the final is cumulative he has a review session before that goes over all the commonly missed topics to help.
This class I previously didn't pass but I retook it with Macfie. Pretty cool guy but doesn't like to be e-mailed unless of certain circumstances. Hw due every Sunday but SUPER easy and unlimited tries and there are 4 tests (kinda hard) but the lowest one gets dropped. He usually curves the tests ALOT as well. I'd recommend to take this with him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! Seriously, don't. He is by far the laziest professor I've had at ASU. He doesn't care about you or your grade. He might understand what he is talking about, but he couldn't communicate it if his life depended on it. If you read this comment and still decide to take this class, then I have no pity for you, you were warned.
I think someone need to tell the dean or him that WE PAID to get our education. He straight up said that ecn 306 is a self-teaching class. I got it dude, you major in Economics, so you want to put in least effort to max out your profit. Thanks for taking money without teaching. you absolutely have no shame with that.
Dr. MacFie is a great person and instructor. I go to know him better than most. He is a smart, sincere guy with an awesome sense of humor. He is super active and helpful in the "hallway conversations" and will offer extra credit for helping other students. Read, study, watch the videos, and you'll do well. I highly recommend him!!!

The class was pretty difficult but I wouldn't blame the teacher. It's online so it's supposed to be self taught. My only quarrel is that all of the online tests seemed to cover content and mathematical problems that weren't focused on in the readings. Would only recommend taking if you are a Econ major.
Most courses use STATA, SPSS, or another advanced software; but Macfie chooses to use Excel instead. He tells a lot of the same personal anecdotes and they can get old. The best way to study for the tests is to review the powerpoints. Probably the best way to take 410.
7 week class online-lots of reading with LearnSmart extra credit. Exams focused on math problems and material not focused on in readings. Aced the homework and no quizzes, but exams were tough and I failed both but still got a C. He curves the exams! No idea to tell where you stand until the end though : /. Liked his lectures, but not the exams.
Be prepared to read and study for at least 15 hours before each test in order to attempt getting a passing grade. Tests are really hard and the homework doesn't do the best at preparing you for critical thinking questions.
Avoid this class at all costs. The tests are stupid hard. I've never gotten a lower grade than I did in his course. I studied for 16+ hours for my exams and still got extremely low grades. He isn't helpful at all and is rude.
Dr. MacFie isn't for everyone, but if he is one thing, it is direct. He expects his students to listen to his lectures, and his grading for this class was only based on 5 tests. To study for his tests I recommend using his powerpoints only. To pass all you have to do is show up and listen to his class, but you'll need to work to get an "A".
Dr. Macfie is definitely one of the rudest professors that I have worked with. He does however, clearly outline all the things that he expects from you. My piece of advice is do the reading, make sure you read and remember criteria that he posts, and make sure you study for the tests... and don't ask stupid questions that have already been answered
Very very very tough course. Homework is worth 33% of your grade. Two tests make up the other 67% and they aren't easy.
This is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. His lectures were online recorded and barely understandable. The class consists of homework worth 30% and two exam worth 70% the final being just 10 questions. He gives a vague outline for the tests and no practice exams. The least helpful for such a terrible class
I found Macfie to be an exceptional professor, I'm not sure why such negative feedback from others. I failed with Molina who was the one in the featured videos. Macfie expects his students to do the work and read his communication. The class material is difficult, but manageable with effort. He curved both exams and was fair with his expectations.
Online lectures are horribly long and not specific. The course was online but had three tests Saturday mornings scheduled for 10 AM. Changed the time of tests to 9 AM with no email or blackboard announcement. Did not show up to the test to answer questions and assigned a random proctor who knew nothing about the course.
Prof is rude. No you can't just study the slides and pass, it often leaves things out. Exam is mostly conceptual and it is the first time you will see conceptual chapter questions. Meaning, homework does not help you. This not a "math" class. Horrible book, author rants about his wife . Broad study guide and no homework & hard. THINK ABOUT IT.
This professor is extremely rude in the discussion boards and announcements. There are 3 tests, each are worth 25% of your grade. The tests are very difficult, and the professor seems to be proud when he warns you in the syllabus that most students only get a C on exams. His accent is thick, so all the lectures are basically useless.
Professor MacFie is fairly rude in the discussion boards when responding to students questions. He did not like being sent emails and did not reply to mine asking about my grade on one of the tests worth 25% of my grade. Its very hard to do well on the tests because the homework is usually unrelated.
Course material is difficult and the lectures (made by Molina) vary in quality. He provides clear guidance on expectations for the class. He expects you to think through your issues, offer classmates assistance and take ownership of the level commitment required to understand the subject matter. He is active in the forums. Good grades are earned.
Online lectures are so boring and tests do not even relate to it. Just read the book, do the homework and attend exams to pass. Always posted important information to the discussion board on Blackboard instead of sending an email or announcement.
Brian Macfie is by far the WORST professor I've experienced at ASU. He is uncredibly rude. He provided little to no guidance or assistance and his grading scale is abhorrent. He offers NO extra credit - don't bother asking. I'll do you a favor - don't take a class with him. Seriously.
RUDEST INSTRUCTOR I'VE EVER EXPERIENCED. Unbelievable. His video lectures are absolutely PAINFUL, and they are full of him transposing numbers. Not a pleasant experience. If you can find a different instructor, DO. Run, don't walk.
Pompous is the first word that comes to mind when I think Brian Macfie. He seems to like talking about his personal accomplishments and money more than teaching. Tries very hard to be a fast talker, but ends up stuttering so hard that its impossible to follow. I feel bad for the other profs in the economics department having to deal with him.
ECN306 is a typical online class (if you take it online). Lots of reading and basically everything is self-guided. Professor made a pretty good effort to keep us informed and make sure that we didn't miss important deadlines and exams.
*HONEST REVIEW A/B STUDENT* BEWARE. You either read the book, learn it like the back of your hand inside and out, and pass with a well earned B OR you guess and hope to the Heavens that you guessed right. Your grade is primarily based off the only 2 exams (midterm & final). Pray well that the curve is good and hopefully end up with a C- like me.
Videos are useless because it goes over one or two things out of the whole chapter. Exams are 375 points and there is no outline on what key concepts you should study so good luck reading the five chapters and hope that you retained everything you've read.
Don't take this professor for any online class. Lecture videos are not helpful and the two exams are worth over 300 points without any study guides so be prepared to read read read
Basically a self taught class. Textbook material is hard to understand and the videos are useless. Exams are like finals and have nothing to do with the homework questions. Do yourself a favor a take it with another professor
He stepped in for my prof bc of COVID and was so rude. we had 2 weeks left of class and he changed so many things. he was rude in his discussion board posts and didn't seem to care about the students. his lectures were hard to listen to and I highly recommend you take someone else
I had Billy Foster for the first half of statistics (he was amazing), but then he left for personal reasons and we were given Macfie. He completely changed the coursework, made things much difficult and much different in the midst of online learning and corona, and when anyone complained he did not respond kindly.
Curves exams a bit. Exams were originally in person, however, due to covid, went online. During the online exams he would refuse to have it proctored by a camera due to not everyone having a webcam. He provides a study guide in the discussion board. Lecture videos are useless and just read the chapters before the test. VERY UNDERRATED PROFESSOR!
He replaced one of my professors half way through the semester and did not transition well whatsoever. He was very rude when addressing students and had a lot of passive aggressive attitude considering he is a college professor. He thought everyone was questioning his credibility when we just needed clarification. I would NOT take him willingly.
Straight A student here. Brian sucks. This is a poorly designed class and the lectures don't prepare you for the test at all. Just read the textbook. Tests were supposed to be in person but COVID made them online and open book. I have no idea how you could pass the last two tests without an open book test. You would've had to memorize the book.
The homework barely prepares you for the test. The lectures don't help you with anything. The test only comes from weird details from the book. The class was hard but I barely learned anything until the last couple of chapters. Professor Macfie talks redundantly, sarcastically, and defensively to students on the discussion board. it's bad lol.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but he drops a lot of test hints in his lectures. He's also HUGE on the "only one person talks at a time" rule, so if you talk over him, he WILL call/kick you out. He does have a good sense of humor though, and is willing to adjust test material based on what students vote on (more conceptual or computational questions).
I am the kind of person who loves everyone but this guy was so rude and so full of himself that I could NOT stand him. He blames everything on the students, lies, and constantly reminds everyone how frustrated he is and would not stop whining!!! It was so stressful and unprofessional. I hated that the bad exampleofan adult is teaching young adults.
