He has a very good sense of humor and is very straight-forward. He will be strict with his work and as long as you follow his instructions and do what you are supposed to do, you will succeed in his class.
Brian is a very fun guy but takes his and your work seriously - do your job: show up, do the work and learn from him. Video art is a kick ass class!
Brian is a great teacher. More than being knowledgeable, he really cares that we learn something. I have the utmost respect for him as a teacher and a person. I would take any class he taught just because he was the teacher! Plus he is very easy on the eyes and has a sparklingly magnetic personality.

He's a great teacher but you gotta so what he says or done.
Great teacher, he genuinely cares about his students and the art world. If you take him be prepared to learn about the subject and do not be late to critiques (he locks the doors and you will lose points). He really wants you to know the material and if you bring up Alfred Hitchcock he could talk for hours on the subject! Great teacher.
very funny and awsome teacher.
Sounds like Bmacks' been writing his own reviews. Have you seen his work?! Now THATS a riot. Pomp and poppyseed-teeth.
I would never take one of his classes again. It seems as though he grades on if he like you or not rather than your actual work. VERY intimidating, its hard to approach him with questions-he is very degrading when you ask him for help.
Good Teacher, but kind of annoying. He's a post modernist and thinks everyone else should be too. If you just like to take pictures that look cool, take a different teacher. All of your photos have to have meanings, and it's kind of lame. The class itself is cool though. Easy A
Very good teacher, but very opinionated. Show up for class, be on time and you'll do good.

i've had him for two classes: the first time around, he seems intimidating, but really he just wants people to be on time and be prepared!! geesh not too much to ask! dont take him so seriously, and you'll love him. he jokes around, but most people see it as being mean, but he is so helpful!! i love bmack!!
Brian is a really easy going teacher. Just make sure you stay on his good side, or it will be a tough semester.
kind of picky, high expectation... I made a really meaningful sculture art one time, but I didn't think he understood... worse is he won't even let me explain what it was after he graded it... but overall he knows a lot and very interested about art (visual).
This teacher was hard for me. He does not except tardyness at all. Most projects are not as well explained as some would hope.
Brian's a nice teacher, but when he's mad you know it. Just make sure you understand what he's asking in his assingments because they're hard to understand sometimes. He's a nice person, but I think he asks to much of his students, if he doesn't like your work then you won't do very good.
If u r going to be late, then don't even show, he gets way pissed off. Always show up when reading materials is due, he freaks if nobody shows. Very fun class when u r not in class. I think he tries to act like he hates the world, or maybe he just is not a morning person. He is very good at what he does and can teach you how to do a good job.
Mean, rude, butt head! Stay away from this one. He ruined video art for me. Snaps really easily and treats people like dirt.
I have high suspicion this professor is writing reviews for himself. Please beware. Do not take class with him. He will set you up to fail. "Be on time, etc. etc."? Really? That does not sound like a student at all!
Brian Mack hates people when he realizes that they are more talented then he is. He has to work very hard and force it on himself, where as some people art just comes natural to. I would not recommend this professor on my worst enemies. Actually though, if you're good at putting BS meaning into your work just to appease him, then you well get an
He is a great great teacher. He has a sense of humor, isn't afraid to tease you and be honest. He is helpful and genuinely interested in photography and yours. He is over all a cool cat, I don't regret taking his class at all.
He's passionate about photography, so it's a tough course. But, he's also passionate about teaching, so he does everything he can to help you succeed. He's also an all around cool guy. Very highly recommended.
I am very dissapointed with his teaching style its pertains to a few students but leaves the non art students in the dust.
First of all, if you don't have extra cash and a lot of time, don't even think about taking this class. He tells you everything one time and that's that. He grades you on how he feels. Do your work and pray he likes it or fail. Overall, hated every minute. Spent at least $300 on supplies, and countless hours in dark room stressing. DO NOT TAKE
I very much enjoy Brian. I had him for video art also, and can appreciate his teaching style. Contrary to other photo classes, you're not just making pictures that look good. Be prepared to make interpretive art. Oh, and be on time, do the reading, and don't ask stupid questions. Consider taking him for a different kind of art class.
(b&w photo 1)this guy is a joke. forces his personal opinions into everything, puts off about how he's such a partier, very moody. makes you show up to class, then only has 10 minutes of material prepared. the class is really expensive with everything you'll need, and WHEN and IF you can get into the lab you'll be under major time pressure.
This man definitely understands film art and the hidden messages behind it. All my projects were done by myself with just one character in them, me. He found a way to critique everyone's pieces well. Yes, a camera is required so if you don't have one don't bother taking this class. I enjoyed it. I also have some material for a portfolio now.
Brian is very disrespectful and very rude to students. He grades based on his own opinion instead of set criteria. You will learn a lot about yourself and your photography if you ignore is snide comments. Kiss his a$$ and you may do well. Good luck
I really enjoy Brian! He's a great teacher and really easy to understand. Although he is really sarcastic I like that he can talk to his students as if we are just people, not some dumb kids he needs to teach. There are some people who don't like his methods of teaching but I enjoy them. Paying attention and asking for help are key.
Good fun teacher, enjoy being in his class. Assignments are pretty hard.
Has no set grading technique, making it difficult to know what to do? Each image must say something rather than just let it be a simple picture you would like to take.
I had Brian for B&W Photo and I really enjoyed the class. He knows his stuff and can be very helpful if pursued. Brian does not like people who don't try, and I think he enjoys being jerk to them. I personally found his harsh attitude towards those who don't care refreshing. He is a cool guy and I would take a class from him again if possible.
I had Brian for B&W photography. He gives you projects to complete, and definitely expects you to complete them. If not, he knows you don't respect him so he won't respect you. An AWESOME teacher, and is so helpful and nice to questions asked outside of class. Must attend to earn his respect. Such a cool guy and knows his stuff.
Brian is very sarcastic, rude, and only grades on what he likes. he's very condescending in critique sessions and only tells you stuff once. dont take!!!
I took his 2 week, J-term visual arts class, and it was fantastic! The work was fun with the two projects we did. There was a good amount of reading, but it was all very useful for the exam, and pay attention in class discussions! the class was from 9-130, but we almost always got out early. Definitely take this class.
i definately recomend this guy, the class was fun. he is very enthusiastic about the subject and explains everything well especially the projects and what he expects. pay attention and follow WHAT he says in class. show good work ethics, do not miss class and you will get your A.
Great teacher. I hated art before I took it. I got an A in the class. It was not easy but he helped me and turned my on to art. Show up to EVERY class ON TIME. Participate and you will get an A. Not a single class went full time. Some classes were only an hour! Critiques are fun, but he is extremely opinionated might come across as offensive but I
Brian is such a cool guy. Is pretty sarcastic, but keeps class super interesting. Must attend ON TIME-you will get a huge glare for interrupting his class. Really appreciates his job, and you'll look at art in a different way. Do your work + participate = easy A.
This class sucked. he is temperamental, and moody. Needs to work on his professionalism, giving the finger to a student is NOT cool. Don't take this class if you don't have a lot of $$. don't take this class if you don't want to learn how to criticize others work. No standard grading methods, only the ones that flirt with him do good.
Brian is awesome. If you come to class and act like an adult (this is college folks) he acts accordingly. If you're a slacker, skip this class. If you want to learn more about B&W photo, and are in general, take his class. He will challange you though. And the student he flipped off in class was joking around with him. don't be so sensitive.
He is a tough teacher and I regret taking Black and White Photography because of him. It is more stressful than any of the other classes I am taking combined.
He is a moody girl. He can be helpful when he's not giving you attitude but that rarely happens. The projects are way too stressful for a 3 credit course and the tardy policy is ridiculous (when it takes you more hours to park your car than the amount of credits you're taking). Would not take another class with this diva.
Really nice guy. Funny. First year with him and u would take another class from him. The work is hard but from that comes good quality education and good critical thinking skills. You will talk a lot about art in his classes and do several critiques. You will not do poorly if you try hard and discuss ideas with him before you do a project.
Did not once help when asked. Grades on whatever he wants to that day. No set grading parameters. Very vague with projects. DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES.
He's a great teacher. IF you do your assigned work. Even then he's fairly forgiving. Just get the assigned work done and the class will be very enjoyable.
Brian was a terrible, terrible teacher. Overall, I think he was a cool guy but teaching skills are severely lacking. I took B&W with him. It was stressful and spent countless hours in that black room. Sarcastic, rude, tries to be funny, and only helps the women in the class who he very obviously thinks are good looking. Id never recommend him.
Brian Mack is moody and intimidating. During critique, if the class takes more than 3 seconds to respond to a queston of his, he scares the class into talking by raising his voice and threatening to lowers everyones grade for not participating. He doesn't seem to realize that some art is exceptionally hard to critique due to the artist's style.
An incredibly rude, sarcastic and mean spirited teacher. He will call you out and isn't afraid to insult you. The class is essentially him giving his opinion about how bad everything is. He believes in "stupid questions" because everything you ask IS ONE. Very mean and useless. I cringed in empathy for whoever had to show him their project next.
This guy was a total nightmare! He would not provide any help, he was very unprofessional. He would pick on students language used during critiques and thinks his class is the center of the universe. He would come into class listening to music and would start laughing at random moments. Ruined my photography love and experience!
At first I thought this would be a fun interesting class, but after Mack blatantly contradicting the textbook, showing obvious favoritism, and overall acting like an egocentric pretentious dbag- he gives a vague final outline of "anything we've talked about in class" (50+ pieces) and let's class go after 25 min (3hr class) Would NOT suggest
Immature and rude. So into himself with frequent reminders how great the other classes are he teaches. Locks the door at time of class start time so don''t be late or your will be shamed with his glares. If you learn the skills needed to cope with this guy you will do well in life. Attend class be on time and study and you should succeed.
WORST! no camera instruction, & minimal dark rm training. Uninspiring, not artistic himself, but ls good at criticizing answers questions "because I said so"demands respect, wont give. class afraid and he likes it! .thinks he is still 20, gets mad if you interrupt class for 5 sec, but usually let out early. No office hrs or location on syllabus
Do NOT take this class unless you have dark room experience, or have a lot of extra time and money( minimum of 20 hourswk $400-$600 supplies.) No weekend or eve lab. The text book only covers critique. There are eight days when you discuss other class members work, and this is when you learn about composition. No content to class.
B&W photography class is where you begin to explore the arts of photography. Brian is an interesting fellow, he is very intimidating in general and during critiques. he wants you to prove yours. the only test you have is the final. TAKE NOTES ABOUT THE BOOK! the class is expensive when it come to supplies!
Seeing these reviews makes sense but I actually thoroughly enjoyed B&W photography. Brian is an extremely intimidating teacher but if you listen to him, come to class, and put effort into your projects, you will do very well. It is a lot of time in the dark room but if you have the time, money, and motivation you will get an A.
One of the best professors I have had the pleasure of learning from. Strict at times but is generally a funny and cool guy. You can really tell he loves teaching and has high expectations for his students. I registered for his Video Art course assuming it would be a fun, easy class, but soon realized that it was so much more than that.
Brian is definitely tough. Many students may view him as kind of strict and rude but I really truly think it's just that he is very passionate about the work he does and when students take a photo class or an art class, they view it as an easy A. He is not trying to prove them wrong, he just wants you to put in the effort and not just shrug it off.
I've taken several classes taught by Brian, he's tough but all around chill professor. Participation is absolutely necessary, counts for just as much as the actual work does. It will be a good amount of out of class work, but he is willing to help and wants to see his students succeed.
He is a great teacher if you respect the class. He is almost always available to talk with about the project you are working on. Overall one of my best teachers. He is probably in my top 15.
When I first started this photography class I was honestly really scared and intimidated by Brian, but later in the month I really found a greater appreciation for his teaching methods and the way he viewed art. He totally changed my perspective on the world and would definitely recommend him to anybody with a strong work ethic.
To me he was a really great teacher, very informative and funny. Class can get slow with lectures but if you're interested in art they'll teach you a lot of valuable things and be really interesting. Would recommend Brian to other students, the class is really cool and the projects are actually fun. 10/10
A beginning class is the time to nurture talent; not squash it like a bug. I took this class because I wanted to do something out of my comfort zone. Big mistake
he can very intimidating and sometimes just plain rude. And he still scares me to this day. That being said he is an amazing teacher. His projects make you to think and go outside your comfort zone. He wants you to push yourselves and create worth wild art. Not just pictures of your dog. If you want to take an easy A photo class don't take him. But if you are going to try and grow as an artist and want to be challenged take him. Also I think he is very available if you want to talk to him he encourages student's to tell him their ideas.
He's sort of intimidating as a person so just keep that in mind. He cares about artistic style a lot less than he cares about the message of your photo, he LOOVES political messages in photography so I'd recommend going in that direction, if not just try and do something moderately personal and be able to talk about it.
I took video art with him and gave the class 100% got a B.... he only gives out As to thoes he finds talented. Its not about being a good student its about how much you can impress him. If he dosnt like you, good luck getting a A. I never missed a class and got a B, did every homework assignment and tried hard....
Not the type of guy who is easy to approach, Class atmosphere is horrible you will dread having to go to his class, Can be rude but is a good person, teaching just isn't is thing. I do not recommend this professor.
Out of all my Professor I would have to say he was by far the best. He challenges you at a college level and expect your best. I would recommend this class to those who are passionate about art.
Brian is bar none the best professor I have had the pleasure of taking. He is very strict on attendance and you should NEVER be late. Despite that, he is understanding if you let him know in advance. He is very blunt about what he expects from his students and as long as you show him you are making an effort then an "A" should be very attainable!
He's really not a good teacher. To him, his beliefs are the only right opinion, and if you disagree, he doesn't care. He is overall very rude to students, and calls people out for having different opinions. His ego is huge. It's his way or the highway. Just watch out. If you can survive Brian you can do anything.
Brian cares about his students doing well in his class and his critiques help you grow as an artist. He pushes his students to grow as artists and allows for the duality of self-expression and serious artwork. This class is EXPENSIVE, be prepared to spend hundreds on film, matboard, and photo paper. Brian is a hard-ass, but his class is worth it.
Brian is one of the best educators I have had to date. He has high standards. As long as he sees you putting in an effort, going outside of your comfort zone and asking questions, you will do well. He is not for the weak of will or those who don't want to go above and beyond. B&W photography is expensive. Be prepared to drop at least $600.
Prior to taking Brians Visual Arts 101, I graduated from a reputable arts high school. Ive had various art professors that were both skilled and knowledgeable in the field, though Ive never had a professor as concrete and concrete as Brian Mack. This professor will push you as an artist. If thats not what youre abt, opt out of this course.
Grades photo's by his personal taste, which is mostly parenthood or current events. Anything sports related: expect him to piss all over it. He is rude and interrupts students in class. To say that the grading criteria is unclear would be an understatement. Wanting to take this class to step out of your comfort zone? DON'T!
Brian Mack was well-equipped to teach via online synchronous methods. He had clear guidelines for respectful engagement, a passion for the material, and inspired critical thinking. Condensed class that required a lot of written response and in-class discussion. I got far more out of having work critiqued and discussions than just textbook-based.
He gives really hard criticism in class. There seems to be a lack of respect for his students. This class has helped me become better at photography, but I would not recommend taking his course.
Film Photo: I mistakenly thought this would be a fun, stress-free class. I was wrong. Projects are to be completed quickly, meaning your LIFE will revolve around them. Brian = nice/big ego/wants photos with deeper (societal/political) meanings BUT he won't tell you that. Critiquing classmates work in front of everyone is a huge part of your grade!
broooo im telling yall dont sign up for this man he a 2 faced liar tellin me he accept late work and when I turned in an assignment he made me write 500 words for he still gave me an F. he does have his favorites in the glass and grading is biased asf. would not recommend dont waste your time!!!!!!
Brian got his little favorites in the classroom, even when their pictures be ugly he be gassin them but lets just say if somebody who isnt his favorite takes a pic he dont like he will shit on it infront of everybody in the class. if you like to be embarrassed, receive a low grade even if you try, and like teachers who be 2 faced then hurry&sign up!
Brian doesn't give you your grades in D2L, he just expects you to know where you stand and then you get crapped on at the end of the semester when you finish with a C. He's got his favorites which always seem to get a good grade even with bad pictures. Expect to get shit on even with good pictures. DO NOT TAKE THIS GUYS CLASS, EVER!!! he's terrible
Not a nice guy. He has his favorites and it shows. He always makes it know that if you have a bad experience with him, don't take another class with him. He is rude and very disrespectful
Brian cares about art and knows a lot about making art. He was helpful when developing projects for critique. In my opinion, he can be a little closed-minded at times to differing views, but he is otherwise caring when it comes to class work.
To start, Brian is an intense personality. You either like him or not. Regardless, he's always pushing you to improve and think bigger on each successive project. The class has 4 individual projects and an in-class presentation, and you'll be working in the darkroom outside of class to prepare. He helped me find a new favorite hobby in photography.
Brian was a great professor, the only thing I will say is that he definitely has a 'no BS' attitude, and while it can be slightly offputting at first it's understandable. He really seems to care about the success of his students and their connection to art and he was always very friendly. As long as you actually try in your projects you'll do good.
He wants to be anywhere but in class teaching and he makes it clear. You will NOT enjoy going to class. Save yourself from this please!
Great guy that's very interested in what he teaches and very interested in how you're able to learn and understand the topics. Very enthusiastic and his lectures feel less like lectures and more like discussions about common interests in art. As long as you put in decent effort in the projects, you'll do well.
I will say about this professor is that Brian is a good decent honest teacher who will engage and try to understand the artwork you make. Honestly, I would say, as for his grading, he does not get extra credit. However, the class overall very easy. I would definitely take this class again if I was a art major.
I took his class (ART 1101-30) with very low expectations. I was very happily surprised that he was very welcoming. I enjoyed going to his class and felt welcome without being pressured to talk. He would make sure everyone had a chance to speak. I personally really liked having him as a professor and hope to have him again.
The professor is helpful, passionate about teaching, and truly cares about his students. He expects you to pay attention and not be distracted during class. There's no extra credit— show up, participate in class work, and you'll learn a lot about photography, art, yourself, and the world around you.
I only took this class to complete a MNTC Goal, but I am glad I did, because it turned out to be one of my favorite classes ever, and Brian was a big part of that. He cares about his students and their success and really makes the class/projects enjoyable. Since we only met once a week, participation was a big deal and is a large part of your grade
I will say his personality is not everyone's taste, I enjoy him as a teacher. He tries to be understanding, but makes sure that you are doing the work properly. He is very insightful about ideas when teaching and wants you to be involved. The class I took required us to be more vocal than we might be usually, partly because participation is crucial
While his grading style was pretty solid. He was EXTREMELY disrespectful to both the students and myself included. He was consistently abrasive and rude to me especially during our group critiques. He would constantly pick on me when I wanted to voice my thoughts on someone else's work and make me feel insecure or embarrassed. DO NOT TAKE!
This is class is an Introduction to Digital Photography. It wasn't really that hard but at the end of every project we have critiques which is where you present your work and the group dissects it. He tends to go all in on work that looks half assed and praises others who put in work. Make of that what you will. Just be prepared to have thick skin
I absolutely love Brian. I've taken 2 classes so I can confidently say this: He's a very honest guy, you can ask him anything and he will answer truthfully. He sets his expectations VERY clearly from the get go. If you follow them, arrive on time, & give him basic respect you will have no issues like some ratings have said. I've seen it first hand.
