Professor Malley is a GREAT guy! He gave me a pet bunny at the end of the course. (Seriously, a real animal) But I was no kiss ass. The class was hard basically because you're competing with everyone else more than with yourself. ONLY TEN PERCENT GET A'S! So work hard, read the book, and go to lectures, and you're sure to do well.
Exams are ridiculously stupid. You can study all you want to, but you end up needing to know tiny little tidbits of information.
I studied for 20 hours for one of his exams and still didn't do well. The averages for his multiple choice exams are a little more than 50%... so don't expect to do well on the exams. You can do all you want to study but it won't help
Decent teacher, actually missed a few too many lectures. tests are impossibly hard based on how he teaches. do not take this class with malley
Horrible teacher. Tests are ridiculous and do not reflect your studying time or knowledge whatsoever. He cares more about his precious normal distribution curve of grades more than you. DO.NOT.TAKE.THIS.CLASS.WITH.MALLEY. take schreyer or siefert instead.
Where to start? Who in their right mind sets the average for an INTRO, psychology, freshman class to a B-? Who, in their right mind, writes these tests with averages in the 60%? Malley needs to understand that this is NOT a science course, especially since he doesn't curve the class in any sort of beneficial way. He had potential, but he blew it.
He was very awkward and didn't grade very fairly. Got me turned off of Psych for awhile.
Professor Malley has the ability to teach students a lot about psychology, but the difficulty of his exams immediately turns students off. Easy class to skip though...
This guy is an evangelical christian who doesn't beleive in evolution. to top it off, it is next to impossible to pull off better than a B in his class. his grading system is set up to scale the students from A to E with a middle-heavy distribution. as he says "he uses the whole scale" meaning dont be suprised to get a 1 out of 10 on BS homework
He absolutely refuses to let anyone get a good grade in his class with his impossible exams and unfair curves, although he is a nice guy. Basically, avoid him at all costs when taking PSYCH 111.
If you pay attention in lecture and skim the readings the exams are easy (at least in the summer section). He takes time to make hammer in the important points for the class and always answers questions fully.
I've gotten the impression that he wants his students to fail. The class average on our first exam was a 62%, which he claimed was exactly where he wanted us to be. He has turned me away from the subject of psychology. Avoid taking him at all costs.
Do not take this class. I thought the class would be interesting but it was not at all. It could be but Malley has a horrible way of presenting the material. The assignments were useless (filling in the blanks on his notes, etc...) Lecture made sense, the readings made sense, but put together they made no sense.
Honestly, you do the reading and the class is not hard. I LOVE his lectures, hes extremely interesting, and has definitely got me to like psychology. People who didnt like him probably just didnt read.
Why anyone would intentionally take this class is beyond me. Learn from our mistakes. Take another professor for psych 111. With anyone else, this class is easy... with Malley it is impossible.
I don't know why people say he curves the grades, because he doesn't. And it's definitely not impossible to get an A because I am. I think people give him a bad grade because the expected psych111 to be extremely easy and then they're bitter when they find out they have to study. Malley gives interesting lectures and I enjoyed the class.
He puts up an interesting lecture, but you have to know your stuff. He doesn't curve, but there is a good cushion with small online quizzes.
The whining is unnecessary. Professor Malley is a good teacher and teaches the class very well. The people who complain about his class are bitter that this wasn't a given A+.
Even as a second semester senior Psychology major, I think its safe to say that "Why do people belive in gods" is by far the worst class I've ever taken at the University of Michigan. Brian Malley is a useless professor who attempts to teach a topic for which there is no research to support any part of it. Its so unstructured hard to follow.
I thought this class was gonna be an easy A, but Malley's tests are surprisingly hard! For example on the first test he put a picture of the anatomy of the brain and made us label each of the parts. His lectures are absolutely worthless and usually have very little to do with the reading material.
Tests are hard, an he is extremely unclear at times. He's not good.
I really enjoyed this class. It was very interesting and Mally was a great professor. I only took this class because I needed more credits but afterwards I was very happy that I took the class.
I loved Malley's class. And it really isn't all that difficult if you're willing to spend some time reading and studying. It's VERY interesting, he's a great lecturer, and I learned more in one semester than the vast majority of other classes I've taken. If you're not going to whine about having to study a little, get Malley because he's great.
Well, I'm in psych 111 right now. Psychology in my opinion is very interesting. In this class, you are not guaranteed a passing grade just because you study. The exams are REDICULOUSLY HARD! there are only 4and they consist of 40 questions...Don't let that fool you. You just might want to drop him IMMEDIATELY ♥
Very reading intensive class. Very active. Simply going to lecture is not going to cut it, and neither is simply reading the book. You've gotta read and go to lecture. The tests are hard, but you cover a lot of material. A good class, but not one for students who are lazy or have large course loads.
His tests are very difficult. He's a very nice guy though, and i thought it was sort of cool that he could use his own personal life as examples.
I didnt like this class at all and did not think that malley was a good teacher.
Malley is a very good lecturer and a funny guy in general. His tests are NOT that hard if you have half a brain and spend some time studying for them. If you don't want to study for your tests, don't take this class (or just go to State). Great professor.
Malley is a really nice guy but for a 111 course, this was more difficult than expected. You need to go to lecture and do a ton of reading, but that will not garauntee you a good grade. His tests are hard even though the material is not challenging. It was more work than expected and compared to other Psych 111 classes, a lot harder too.
Definitely not an easy class, but not impossible either. His lectures are usually completely different from the textbook, so you definitely have to read and pay attention in class to do well. Malley is a good teacher, and the class is interesting, you just have to be willing to dedicate some time.
He is a good teacher and the people who say he is hard are probably illiterate or just trying to prevent you from taking a great class.
Easy and fun! Great teacher.
Hard class, but possible to gat an A.
He is an interesting professor, but his tests are fairly difficult. His tests often, cover a lot of textbook material he doesn't cover or review in class. But, if you do the readings - the class itself is not as difficult as it is made out to be.
I enjoyed going to lecture, although it was unnecessary for success. Discussions are not useful. The book was fun and easy to understand, and VERY important to read, as most of the 4 tests were based solely on the textbook material. Overall a very interesting and fairly easy class with a good professor as long as you know to read the book.
Awesome class, interesting lectures, keeps your interest, recommend
i love brian malley
I really enjoyed Brian's class. The tests are pretty reasonable; they use a lot of material from lecture AND the book, so it helps to read and attend lecture. He made lecture interesting and funny, which was refreshing.
WORST CLASS EVER. psych 111 is easy with any other teacher. stupid assignments and class is curved and can hurt your grade not improve it
Really interesting lectures. Assignments are pretty easy (no exams! no long papers!) & as long as you spell check them (since I've heard people getting point deduction for spelling errors), you should be fine. Definitely a good psych elective to take.
I'm graduating soon, and when I took his 111 class I doubted whether Psych was right for me. Not because it was hard, but because he made the lectures so dull and taught the class as though he truly did not want to be there. I am glad the rest of the psych department is not like him. Thank god. Ps. He has trouble leaving his religious views out
A competent professor, Mr. Malley's lectures are about as interesting as intro psych can be, and the man himself has a decent sense of humor, greatly improving things. His tests are harder than they seem: READ YOUR BOOK. Further, it is necessary to serve a test subject in several psych experiments to pass: this is sometimes inconvenient.
I learned a lot however his exams are difficult. You have to be willing to reflect on the reading to do well on the exams. However half your grade is based on section and the other on lecture.
He is very smart and knows what he's talking about. However, I didn't find lectures to be interesting. Also, make sure you always do the readings because he gives quizzes and doesn't always give notice. Even though he is a tough grader, he grades on a curve. Only take if you are very interested in the topic and plan to do the reading
He was a great lecturer, he tried to make it interesting with personal anecdotes and film clips. Half the class depends on discussion section, so I didn't have much interaction with him. Tests were DEFINITELY harder than in the other intro psych classes, but not impossible. Read the book very well, take notes in class, and you're fine.
Yeah...this class was a HOT MESS. Boring, oh so Boring. It never gets better. The tests are crazy hard and he normally has to curve them because no one does well. Take at your own risk! But he is a nice guy.
This just illustrates how you can't believe what people say on this website. Malley was a terrific professor and I'm amazed that so many people found this class difficult and boring. I thought it was interesting, and not very hard at all. Maybe psych majors are just whiny. This class was great.
Such an amazing man.
His exams have little to do with what he lectures on, it's all from the book. He is by far the hardest Psych111 prof. Try to schedule another professor for this course if possible. He tries to be funny all the time, it kind of gets old.
Malley keeps lectures interesting with video clips and good examples in his powerpoints. He also posts lecture outlines online which is nice. His tests are tough because you can't just memorize the facts - you have to be able to apply the facts to real situations.
I went into this class with really low expectations after several friends told me that Dr. Malley was a terrible teacher. They could NOT have been more wrong. Dr. Malley was enjoyable, interesting, and helpful at every turn. He used great visual aids and anecdotes to compliment the material. Just READ THE BOOK and go to lecture and you'll do fine.
This class was difficult, but not unmanageable. You definitely need to read the book though. The tests are curved, and I think your grade depends more on the GSI you have. Mine was boring and unhelpful, and it definitely prevented me from enjoying the class.
Dr Malley is by far the best freshman psych teacher available. But his tests are tricky as hell. You go in feeling very prepared and feel like you aced it when you turn it in, but after you get the grade back its so low you think something happened with the scantron machine. be prepared to study a lot if you take this class
Very good lecturer, definitely prepared and brings up interesting/debatable points on many if not all topics. Rather funny as well. First third of semester perfect lectures, a little unclear on certain topics in second and third--perhaps he doesn't like these topics as much. Tests are hard, and the class is relatively easy esp if you took AP pysch.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! i took this class and everybody talks about how psych 111 is an easy A of a class and it is. Not if you take Malley though as is was not only my hardest class but also the one i did the most work for. Take the class just with another professor. Test are impossible! Stay away!
I am so surprised by some of the claims here. I loved Dr. Malley! Lectures were always interesting and he's a funny guy. Just read the book and go to lecture and you will be fine on the tests. I am NOT that smart and I got A's on every single one. It's not a blow off class, but if you study you'll be fine.
Brian Malley can be very innaproppriate in lecture. I felt like he tried way too hard to be funny and crossed the line more than once. He's not a very nice person, and he crafts his tests replete with trick questions just so he can say his class is hard, as though he's a great teacher. I don't think he is. I learned nothing in lecture.
I took the class in Fall 2008. The 3 exams, which many people say are hard, are actually only made 30 % of your grade. 20 % are based on quizzes that you can repeat (hence you get 100 % grade for the quizzes), and 50 % from papers. So exam, although hard is not that important. The lecture is also not as important as the TEXTBOOK. Read the TEXTBOOK.
I could see why someone would not like Malley, but I actually enjoyed him quite a bit. I thought he was quite humourous, well spoken, and generally an interesting speaker. This was the only class I never missed. You do have to read the text book though, his tests- though he says they're not meant to- are extremely tricky.
exams are tricky
If you have interest in Psychology he's a good professor - clearly smart. But I simply wanted an easy A, and he's the one psych 101 section in which that's not possible. Lectures are clear, but the tests come from the textbook. Take another professor for an easy a
Wants to be a comedian (doesn't everybody?) Multiple-choice tests = poor education, go blue?
I enjoyed Dr.Malley's class. He is enthusiastic about teaching this introductory class and tries to make it interesting through showing short-clips and movies that I found to be very helpful. I recommend you to go to his office hours if you have any doubts in lecture materials or in readings. Make sure you go to his every lecture too.
Brian Malley is interesting, intelligent, and funny. However the tests are way way way too hard. To put it simply, I did much better in Organic Chemistry than I did in Psych 111. I like the class, just not the grade.
I loved 111 with Malley, and then HATED 313. I was extremely disappointed. The whole grade is based on a group project and pop quizzes (no exams or papers.. nothing of substance) and his lectures are lacking in content. GSI is horrific. This class had lots of potential, but it's just a mess.
Really funny, easy to understand. Slightly harder than other teachers from what I've heard, but not hard to get an A or B.
I heard mixed reviews about him before but now I see why people didn't like him. Makes you come to class for pointless lectures that don't help. I've heard if you go to office hours, he's not very helpful and kind of rude. I wouldn't recommend this class.
While Malley is a super nice guy, and he definitely knows his material, the quizzes are hard. He got rid of finals and tests and tried to make the grading easier for people to obtain an A, but it was still difficult. You definitley have to go to his lectures, he doesn't announce when a quiz will be, if you miss a quiz, it's a zero. No redos.
No exams or tests, but pop lecture quizzes instead. Contrary to previous comments, the quizzes are pretty easy (They are all open book!). Dr. Malley is a pretty funny and entertaining professor, and he'd better be, since attendance at lecture is pretty much mandatory (pop quizzes are not retake-able). I'd recommend the class.
Dr. Malley seemed like a nice guy, but his lectures were boring sometimes. The pop-quizes were pain because it forces you to come to class for sometimes pointless lectures. It sucks having most of your grade based on 10 point quizzes.
Was extremely interested in course material. However, this class is completely disorganized. He often shows movies, has his gsi's lecture, and when he does lecture lets the class out early. Class itself is on the easy side, but I feel bad that I paid tuition to watch movies...
Very smart and willing to help. His quizzes aren't that hard, as they are all either open book/notes or group quizzes.
Super easy class. No tests or exams. Attendance is mandatory because of random pop quizzes (my grade went down from being sick for 2 weeks and missing 2 quizzes in section & lecture). Pop quizzes are open book. You have to write 2 easy papers for section and have announced quizzes in there that are tougher than lecture quizzes.
Professor Malley is hilarious, which makes going to lectures fun. This class isn't that hard if you keep up and study for the quizzes.
I loved Dr. Malley's intro psych class! He is always trying to make the class laugh. It was a pretty easy course and really interesting. Plus, no exams and the lecture quizzes were all open book and some were group! Can't beat that
Dr. Malley is a great teacher. He keeps his class interesting and straightforward. People complain that the quizzes are hard but if you pay attention and do the readings they really aren't. Besides all of the quizzes are open book/note. It's the GSIs that you have to watch out for.
Well I loved his Psych 111 class, but then 313 (Psychology of Religion) was TERRIBLE. Seriously if there was ever a hot mess of a class, this was it. There were no tests or papers- the grade was from arbitrary pop quizzes and a horrible group project. Avoid 313!
Honestly, what is taught in lecture has nothing to do with what is on quizes at all. GSI will determine your grade, and luckily I got stuck with a horrible one so we will see how this semester goes.
All of the learning is done outside of class. Not much reading, and he says he doesn't require memomorization. However, in discussion the quizzes (which are created from a bank of questions Dr. Malley himself created) would often require the name of a study or theory. I find the class to be unnecessarily difficult, and Dr. Malley unhelpful.
Dr. Malley is a funny guy, his lectures are usually really entertaining! He is a difficult teacher though. There are no exams in the class, but the lecture quizzes are a little confusing and if you don't write the exact words Dr. Malley wants your GSI will take off points. If you want an A, probably don't take this class.
HORRIBLE!!! DO NOT BY ANY MEANS TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
He is an engaging guy. I enjoy his lectures. He tries to ensure that people come to lecture by having pop quizzes and other points given out during lecture. no exams, but the quizzes can be deceptively hard
Not a bad professor. Lectures are usually very funny, but don't let them trick you. There are no tests, just 6 open book quizzes that are VERY difficult. You have to have exact wording that he is looking for. And grade appeals are not easy. Interesting class, but bad for the GPA.
Dr. Malley is an entertaining lecturer. However, the quizzes given in lecture are ridiculously difficult, and unnecessarily so. Simply grasping a concept is not enough.. you pretty much need to read Malley's mind, because the GSI's want only Malley's answers. And lucky for me my GSI sticks to Malley's every word. I will NOT be getting an A.
Not sour grapes, I probably got an A in this class. But the guy is an absolute joke. I like Psych, the material is pretty interesting overall, and Malley has some interesting things to say, but he goes out of his way to make things unnecessarily difficult. And more often than not I find him annoying to listen to in lecture.
The quizzes are not that hard. You just have to read. It's one chapter a week. I read, attended lecture, and wrote decent papers. I'm ending up with a high A. Utilize your GSI's office hours, as well as his, and you will be fine. Basically, do what you are supposed to do instead of looking for shortcuts.
This semester was the first that the university decided to have Malley's lecture recorded in one room, while live in the other. This is what we're paying for? Besides that, Malley's quizzes may appear straight-forward, but you'll get docked for one word that he doesn't like. Otherwise, your grade is determined by GSI, so make sure to get a good one!
Malley is entertaining but he does not give detailed lecture notes during class or post them online. This is difficult because the room is always noisy! Lecture quizzes are really hard, but you can still get an A in the class even if you dont do well on them because discussion section is most of your grade!
He is an entertaining professor. The lecture quizzes are difficult; however they do not determine your entire grade. Getting a good GSI is key. There are no exams (at least the semester I took it). Your grade really depends on how your GSI grades.
I'm pretty sure his degree is in Anthropology, which would explain how miserable this class was. Bad, bad plan. If you can avoid taking it with him, do so. If not, you can still pull an A. I did. Take advantage of the extra credit.
I constantly found myself asking my neighbors "what just happened" during this class. Just really strange topics and somehow everything related to sex. Your grade basically depends on how your GSI grades and how well you understand what they say. Content is pretty simple and Malley seems to be a good guy. But it was just a VERY odd semester.
Dr.Malley is a really interesting professor. It is easy to get a good grade in the class but you def. have to do your work. Don't slack off, go to lecture, take good lecture notes and you'll do fine. Also, schedule office hours meetings with him for papers. It will help you a lot.
The lectures were interesting. However, he graded more on how well you paid attention to minute detail (like 1" margins) versus the subject matter. I didn't find him helpful after class either, he acted kind of like I was stupid for not knowing something he didn't teach. His directions for assignments confused me and everybody I sought for help.
I found myself in lecture learning about anthropology and common sense more than psychology. To my amazement he doesn't have a single degree in psychology. The quizes aren't based on psychology but rather were you paying attention to all the details. I ended up dropping it because I couldn't stand the absurdity that it was.
I thought I wanted to major in psych before taking this course. It's all about whether or not you can understand/identify peer-reviewed research articles and can find random details in the text book for the pop quizzes. There's no final but the quizzes are impossible and papers are ridiculous.
malley was a great teacher. as long as you go to class and take good notes, you'll have all the answers for the quizzes, and you'll be able to do well. office hours help a lot for the papers.
All the people that complain about him being hard must not know that this is MICHIGAN and work is obviously required for the classes. Go to lecture and actually pay attention, do your reading, go to office hours and you will get a good grade. If you are used to slacking off and not going to class this clearly isn't the class/school for you.
Lecture was great. It was a early morning class, yet rarely I fell asleep. Too bad my GSI sucked... really hurt my liking of this class.
He is horrible. If you actually have an interest in psych, take it with another teacher. There are no exams and no studying, but the class is focused on minute details and whether or not you followed specific format for everything. Easy A, but not worth it. Malley is not intelligent, nor engaging.
Always go to lecture and always have your notes printed out if you type them. Always be ready for a pop quiz. He was really helpful during the research paper because you could take your drafts to him during office hours and he also really wanted all of us to do well. Stay away if your looking for an easy A, but overall not bad.
Not a bad teacher, really wants his students to go well. He puts outlines of his lectures online before class so if you print those off then you can take notes with those which helps. The biggest thing that hurt me was how specific some of the quiz questions are. REALLY NICE to not have a midterm and final.
He's a creep. He has a sexual fetish for monster truck tires, and is always making sex comments that are completely unnecessary and inappropriate. He's also an idiot and doesn't understand real science. Don't take his class.
Completely useless professor. He doesn't even have a degree in psychology. All he does is talk about his sexual fetish with monster truck tires and his miserable life. This class taught me nothing about psychology. Don't take it with him.
Much harder than I expected an Intro Psych class to be. You have to write a research paper (which took MANY hours). Quizzes are NOT multiple choice and are pretty hard. Having a good GSI made this class manageable, but don't take it if you're just looking for an easy A.
quizzes were hard, he explained material in a non-interesting way. i don't recommened him.
Really, people? This class isn't hard if you do the readings and go to lecture. His notes are available online, and you can always go to office hours. Not to mention THERE IS NO EXAM. And as for the quizzes? You can use your books and all of your notes, for crying out loud!
Quizzes are REALLY HARD because you have to use specific key words and if you don't you just lose a ton of points. the average is usually like 5/10. don't rely on the quizzes - just make sure your papers are perfect (like you did everything on the syllabus and have perfect format), and do all the extra credit assignments.
Funny Professor who made class entertaining. They layout of the class was pretty bogus, however. Their are no tests so the whole grade is in-lecture quizzes and a paper. The grading is a bit ridiculous, the phrase nit picky does not do it justice. Despite this, still a great class to take.
Decent class, but i dont think i really learned anything. I just went to lecture so i didnt fail and then used my notes on most quizzes.
Rough class. Not really sure what he wanted us to take from it. A lot of the reading was really weird/difficult. You have to go to class and you have to do the reading, no way around it. There's no papers, no exams only quizzes and writing assignments which was a double edged sword. It's doable but you probably won't enjoy it.
This is the most rediculous class I've ever took. Format is EVERYTHING. The things that get you pass the course have ALMOST NOTHING to do with psychology. Quizzes are easy and fun, and are the only ones that are related. The reason I failed is the margin of the paper. NICE JOB!
The worst teacher I have ever encountered. Do not take any of his classes. I didn't learn a single thing except that format is more important than content.
Terrible class. This course is more like a class on formatting articles you write, to the point where they could be submitted in a peer reviewed journal. It is supposed to be intro to psych, and I didn't learn any psych. There are no exams, papers are graded horribly, and the course is very unorganized. Never take this class!
He's awful. He was completely rude to me, talked down to me, and was so unclear about grading and overly specific about formatting to the point where you'd go from a A on a paper to a C for forgetting to put the page numbers on it. So obnoxious. Avoid him at all costs.
Go to discussion & you'll have an A
I would must definitely not recommend. Ridiculous and strenuous grading scale. Very unwilling to offer any assistance after a dispute with a GSI. I would even go as far to recommending the university to rethink having him as a representative of their educational staff.
I thought professor Malley was great! This class was very interesting to me. I enjoyed lectures a lot but the readings weren't super interesting and were boring. As long as you do every assignment and show up for every quiz you should be fine.
He is honestly one of the worst teachers I've ever encountered in my entire academic career. And that's saying a lot because I am currently a senior. Avoid him at all costs (I believe there's another professor who teaches this class in a 2-hour lecture format)
I really enjoyed having Malley as a professor. He made lecture interesting - which is something all of my previous classes have lacked. The grading system is a bit ridiculous, and you seem to be graded on purely formatting at some times. But, if you simply follow directions PRECISELY and attend class, you're golden.
Dr. Malley made himself very clear at the beginning of the year how he felt about formatting and attending class. Taking this to heart, I listened to what he said and ended up with an A in the class and loving Psych! Plus I had the best GSI, Emily Kean :)
Class is interesting and Malley keeps class running smoothly. Grading is fair and it is important to take notes in class and attend ALL classes, even discussion. I would recommend this class and this professor!
I don't know which was more awkward: the constant invitations to study "qigong, which is very secret", or the time he described orgasm as, "You're in for a treat if you've never had one. It's like a little seizure down there." (He then proceeded to demonstrate what it feels like through a series of jerking motions).
The worst. I thought I wanted to major in psych before I took this class, but it pretty much killed that idea. He's overly nitpicky and unclear. Overall, I feel like this class was a waste of my time and tuition. Definitely avoid at all costs.
He is a straight-forward professor. His lectures are interesting. His quizzes are hard! Just take good notes and you'll do fine. Make sure to go to class.
This class is kind of a joke. The grade is calculated based on the best 5 of 6 "pop" quizzes, which are open note, occasionally take-home, occasionally partner. When taking notes during lecture, write down the examples he gives. This helped me very much during the quizzes. This is not a class for someone who is genuinely interested in psych.
Brian Malley is a pretty good professor. The class was interesting, and it was not difficult to pay attention. He spiced lectures up with funny comments and videos. It is not too hard of a class, but it is very possible to do poorly. The class is based pop quizzes, a paper, and discussion work. Overall I would suggest intro psych with Malley.
Dr. Malley is a good professor who makes lectures interesting. Although the quizzes are annoying, it is pretty easy to get an A in the class as long as you go to lectures and discussion and take good notes. I would recommend this class. Definitely more interesting than other intro courses.
Malley keeps lecture interesting and funny with his little jokes and comments. Pretty easy class because there are no exams, just pop quizzes which are open notes. Quizzes are hard as long as you take notes in class and discussion(my gsi put slides online). its an easy class just make sure you follow exact directions.
He makes lecture interesting, but he grades SUPER hard. You have to do "synopses" for every reading, summing up at least 50 pages into one sentence that encompasses the entire argument. If you do the slightest thing like not formatting it right, it's -1 point out of 3, which automatically gives you 66%. It feels like I'm being cheated as a student.
Malley is hilarious and is one of the few professors that can keep me awake during lecture. Doing the readings is pointless because the quizzes are either open-book, notes, partner, etc. But he's very specific with how the quizzes and assignments are graded, which makes it VERY easy to get a poor grade. Interesting material, though. I recommend it!
Boring lecture; way too "synopsis" assignments with REQUIRED reading of 50-150 pages. gave extra credit (a lot of work), but grades hard. He can be cool, but other times, he can be jerk! Take with caution!
EASY class if you're just looking to fulfill your NS requirement. He is really picky about his grading but just pay attention it's not hard. Attendance isn't required but if you want to do well on the quizes go and take notes-can use on quiz. The class was interesting too he made some funny jokes, sometimes.
Great guy! Controls himself well. Interesting lectures. Mkay. Very funny! Hilarious sense of humor! LOL!!!!!
Great class! Malley is an awesome prof! He always keeps lectures interesting and the time flies by really quickly. Material is super interesting and the class isn't that hard. The grading is pretty picky, but it's honestly worth it because you actually learn things worth knowing. Recommend!!
Great class. Great professor. Lots of (sometimes difficult) readings, but Dr. Malley does a good job at pinpointing the important stuff. 6 quizes, a few out of class writing assignments, weekly synopsis assignments (not that hard, but everyone acts like they are). My only critique: Somewhat confusing grading system.
Brian is hilarious!!!!!!! His lectures were always interesting and the class was pretty easy as long as you payed attention and took notes and read occasionally. However he was a little bit picky about grades and he also had some strange rules but other than that the class was great.
The class was fairly easy, didn't go to class much. No exams, only 6 quizzes in which the top 5 were taken. All quizzes were open note, some were open laptop too. The quizzes were pop quizzes. Discussion section was very boring but a chance to make some easy points.
Malley is pretty annoying with his quizzes. The questions are so vague but require such specific answers. Overall pretty easy class-take notes and come to lecture and you will get an A
Dr. Malley is a great professor and he is very engaging in his lectures. However, the material that we were responsible for between lectures, sections, and readings are beyond reason and, therefore, made the open-notebook quizzes very difficult. Lectures were a pleasure but material was dense and the quizzes were very difficult.
My favorite class so far!! He is really nice& funny and good at explaining and engaging students. First few quizzes are hard and make u wanna die! But it gets better and he also gives out extra credits at the end of the course. easy A. Discussion sessions are fun if you are interested in psych. It really depends on YOU!
No exams. 6 quizzes with open notes. Takes top 5 quizzes. Plenty of extra credit in the end. Skim your book once a week and it's an easy A. Highly recommend.
This was definitely one of my favorite classes I've taken at the University of Michigan. I am not a Psych major but I still was able to so well in this class and it was not difficult if you paid attention and took good notes!
Dr. Malley has some rather unfair policies regarding quizzes and attendance, and has provided no legitimate reason for those policies. When thinking about good professors, he does not necessarily come to mind.
Never had to do a synopsis assignment. Great teacher, hilarious and very interesting. Would definitely recommend this class.
I honestly have NO idea how he got anything below a 5 for easiness. If people think this class is hard I honestly dont understand how they survive at this school. EASIEST A OF MY LIFE. lectures aren't THAT bad, I like psych so i enjoyed coming to class. no finals, 5 surprise quizzes so you have to go to class but 3 out of 5 were take home. eaassy
Great class! Follow the rules on syllabus & you'll get an A! His quizzes are easy (open note) so go to class and pay attn! Skim the book to take notes. Only downside is each discussion section is different, my GSI had us do a few papers, but all relatively easy and interesting. Tell yourself it's interesting material, and you will enjoy the class!
I thought this class was going to be easier than it was. He's very nit picky with the answers on his quizzes. You can get points off for improper formatting on papers, too. However, if you follow the guidelines and pay attention it's a pretty easy class. And Malley knows what he's talking about. He's a good guy overall, too.
Pretty easy class. For the quizzes, just answer the questions in the lecture summaries that he gives you beforehand. I really actually enjoyed going to lecture cause Professor Malley always made it interesting. Warning: Don't forget to do assignments/hw. The little points seem trivial, but they're actually worth a LOT since there aren't many assign
Terrible teacher! Rude, lazy, unreliable, ambushed students with unreasonable tricks to take your points off, terrible grading system, quiz questions very ambiguous and grading very subjective. Arrogant and reluctant to discuss questions from quizzes. Posted final grades later than required by LSA rules. Worst ever seen. Avoid! at! all! cost!
the class is easy because there are only quizzes and no exams and it's all open note. can be a bit boring but overall good.
He is really funny, knowledgeable, and organized. The assignments make sense and he doesn't believe in exams. Awesome professor.
Very funny, very intelligent
Pop-quizzes during lecture make going to lecture mandatory. Quizzes are very nit-picky but not too hard if you take good notes and print his lecture notes, as you can use these materials on the quiz. Worst quiz score is thrown out. Papers are easy. Long readings are not necessary. Malley makes lectures interesting and funny.
The most interesting lecturer I've ever had. He will never try to trick you, even his pop quizzes aren't too horrible. Take good notes, do your readings and you'll have an easy A!
This was one of the hardest classes I have taken at Michigan. Rarely did anyone know what was going on because the readings were so complicated. I felt like everything we learned did not tie together at the end. Malley is a great guy but this was just too much work for what we learned. Would not recommend the class.
The class is kind of interesting, not that great. As far as professor Malley, he is average in my opinion. He has fairly interesting lectures, however, he lost my respect with a lot of very rude comments and he is inconsiderate of students. Seems arrogant. Pop quizzes are easy. Take good notes.
Class is not a lot of work at all. A few little assignments in discussion and no exams. There are open notes pop quizzes in class that make up your entire grade. they aren't easy but also not impossible. I thought lecture was really boring and really learned nothing, but its an easy A.
Perhaps the most boring class I have taken so far. Little work, and generally easy to do well, just don't miss the quizzes. Malley though is perhaps the most arrogant professor I have had and he really ruined the class for me.
Brian Malley is a great professor. He weeds out nonsense and useless info and delivers only the most interesting and relevant material. It's easy to get an A in this class, but you must go to lecture so you don't miss the Quizzes. He makes lectures humorous and light-hearted. Overall a great, interesting, easy course.
Every student that goes to class is capable of earning an A. The quizzing system is a bit unorthodox, and I found it to be somewhat useless. This class is psychology at its most basic level so don't expect much.
Great
He is a pop quiz master. So don't skip lecture, but he does give you one free one to drop. He really seems like he cares about how well we do through the emails he sends us occasionally. He also is engaging in lecture and throws in a few jokes to keep it enjoyable. I went in already really liking psych, and he made me like it more.
I love malley so much. very fun and relatable. gets straight to the point about information and keeps lecture interesting for the most part.
Definitely one of the tougher professors I've had at Michigan, but lectures are entertaining. He's an engaging lecturer, and makes you want to go to class. If you ask a question, he'll spend as much time as necessary to make sure you understand before moving on.
Dr. Malley is a great teacher, and he has his quirks during lecture when he's going through some tough stuff. Overall, his personality makes you want to go to lecture, and his six pop quizzes throughout the semester make you want to study. FYI, the lowest score gets dropped. Great intro to psych class, and an easy four credits in the NS requirement
Good professor. Watch out for pop quizzes, they aren't tough but they are spontaneous. He explains the content very clearly.
Brian is very clear, both in the presentation of the material and his grading expectations. This class is not super interesting, but hands down an easy A. Not much work at all. Just make sure to come to lectures because while there are no exams in this class, there are pop quizzes!
Pop quizzes to encourage people to attend lecture, they suck BUT no exams.
Malley is an interesting lecturer, and this is important considering you need to show up to every lecture. There are six pop quizzes throughout the semester and no exams. Show up, sit with friends, and take some notes, and you will get an A. However, be prepared to learn nothing at all.
Malley was a really funny guy, I found the lectures to be pretty interesting, though at times can be boring. I think that comes with the breadth of the topic, very briefly touching on many topics. 75% of the class was gimme points, the rest were the pop quizzes that were challenging, but many were either take home or group.
I loved malley's lectures. very interested in psych and he tells it in a interesting way that makes me want to be there. hes such a nice great guy and very funny at times. hes really laidback and wants to see his students succeed. really loved him and his lectures. i would actually be bummed if I slept through one of his lectures. dont get book
Dr. Malley is a good lecturer and professor. He was extremely helpful in office hours - I highly recommend going to them, and also sitting in the front in lecture! The class itself was alright; I felt as though I was taking notes on the book a lot, but that's optional. I learned a lot. The quizzes are alright, but be sure to print out your notes!
Didn't stay in the class long because he made me feel very uncomfortable. Didn't seem to know what he was talking about, stated things as facts that were easily disproven. Definitely think he needs to go back to school himself.
Dr. Malley is a bit odd, but overall a good lecturer. He's clearly passionate about what he is teaching and wants to make a difference in students' lives. 6 pop quizzes that are fairly difficult, but are always open note, and often take home andor group quizzes. Discussion is optional, but helpful for short writing assignments.
PSYCH 112 is confusing due to Dr. Malley's senseless grading techniques. The quiz questions relate to obscure facts from lecture. The class has inconsistent grading and poorly defined extra credit. On homework, I lost points for errors like not indenting paragraphs. Dr. Malley is a mediocre lecturer and doesn't always come to class.
Great guy, very laid back but also shows he knows hit stuff
I really liked Malley and Psych 112 is pretty easy. Its almost so easy that you forget about it and some people end up not doing as well as they'd like. Basically you have to go to lecture because theres pop quizzes and you have to keep up with the online work. Its easy to forget about! If you do those two things than its an easy A. No exams!
I loved Dr. Malley. His grading criteria is clear and as long as you put in the work, it's easy to do well. He's a cool guy, and very willing to help you out during office hours. His class format (pop quizzes, journal entries) isn't everyone's favorite but I personally found it very enjoyable.
He's an awesome lecturer, and the 6 quizzes in class are super easy, plus you drop your worst one.
Great guy, loved his call. Very conversational but be prepared for the pop quizzes. Bright side: no exam!
Professor Malley was funny, engaging, and doesn't require much work. I would highly recommend this class for people who need to fulfill a Natural Science requirement.
Dr. Malley is a great lecture as he makes use of his time by giving lots of information. Beware of pop quizzes, you can use notes but they are still incredibly difficult. Honestly, take PSYCH 112, its basically the same class but 112 looks better. Also, he is very picky about formatting so just be careful with that.
The pop quizzes are very difficult and don't really have much to do with what you have read or what you do in class. There is inconsistencies in grading. The material isn't difficult, it's the grading and the structure of the class that is hard.
His quizzes are very difficult, and even though they are open note, they are very poorly written and lectures/reading will not possibly prepare you for the quizzes. He is unorganized. He would cancel lecture often.
His quizzes were close to impossible. He was not organized. Pop quizzes were open note, but lectures/reading did not prepare you.
Don't take this class, you do not learn anything.
I guess you can say lecture is mandatory because he gives pop quizzes and theres no make up. 50 points of your grade come from quizzes, and he assigns online chapter exams from chapters of the psych book. (fairly easy). Good thing, there was no midterm/ final and only 2 papers but extremely short. A little effort can get you a solid B
Psych 112 was an easy A for me, but that's because 2 out of 6 "pop quizzes" ended up being take home, and 2 others ended up being group quizzes. The other 2 were individual pop quizzes, but you drop your lowest quiz score so that left 1 quiz that was actually hard. Lectures were boring for me, but this class wasn't very difficult at all.
Dr. Malley is seriously so hilarious. You'll love his lectures because he always makes them interesting. You can tell he's passionate about what he teaches, too. He's also very kind when dealing with sensitive topics and has topics/ assignments dedicated to self-improvement. Expect pop quizzes, but they're not so bad because you can use your notes.
Malley is a good teacher, keeps lectures interesting. How to do well: write down everything he says in lecture and all the bold definitions from the book chapters, cause he uses open-note pop quizzes. Definitely have to pay attention and go to lecture but often these quizzes are group or take home so you should be fine. Can be harsh grader.
Go to lectures and write down everything he says - he talks fast and his slides are there mainly for him to keep track of what to say (there is not much on the slides). He gives open note pop quizzes which can either be really hard or really easy, but the lowest gets dropped. Make sure you keep track of what's due when.
Malley is a very approachable person and his lectures are fun. Everything is not quite clear, but assignments are easy. Give easy grades and helpful office hours. His dirty jokes are the best!
Lecture is a must as that is where the pop quizzes are. Also the readings are ungodly long and you have to do them. Pop quizzes are hard but there are so many other gimme points in the class that it doesn't really matter. Lectures are mostly interesting but Brian is a touch arrogant sometimes which is annoying. Learned a lot, would take again.
The class is super easy. However, he grades on minor material and is not politically correct at all. The rhetoric with which he speaks is so far from clinical that it's uncomfortable.
Professor Malley knows a lot about psychology and his lectures are interesting. He is an entertaining lecturer. There are no tests just 6 open note pop quizzes so you can't miss class. The quizzes are pretty hard but the other assignments are easy to do well on. Must take notes on lecture and readings to be prepared for quizzes. Readings are long.
Easy A as long as you show up to lecture, take notes, and do the assignments. He assigns readings but you don't actually have to do them. Lots of easy homework and assignment points & the other 25% of your grade is pop quizzes. Lowest quiz grade is dropped. Only buy online version of the book, paper is useless. Overall easy/interesting class
Dr. Malley is an engaging teacher, and he's entertaining. He does not give traditional exams. The pop quizzes he gives are extremely specific, so take down notes on EVERYTHING. The other assignments are easy A's if you follow the instructions. The reading quizzes are extremely specific also, but you can keep taking them over and over.
I love that there are no exams, it lets you focus on enjoying the material for the sake of it being interesting, not just to get a grade. Malley tells lots of interesting stories about his own and others' experiences. I always enjoyed going to lecture. WOuld definitely recommend Malley for this class
will need to buy mypsychlab code to do quizzes on textbook. But you can take it however many times u want, &it's mult choice. Just google it. Pop quizzes during lec, mostly group ones. Attendance for discussion, and lots of mini papers that are more personal than academic.
You'll get an easy B if you try AT ALL But for those of us who prefer As, take good notes, the pop quizzes are specific and hard completely based upon the lecture. DONT BUY THE BOOK BUY THE ONLINE CODE
Very nice guy and good teacher, but our grade was mostly based on pop quizzes, which everyone did terrible on. No curve. Thought this would be a good way to bring up my GPA from engineering classes, but wow was I ever wrong.
This class was very boring but if you take good notes and have friends in your section an easy A.
I had his class at 8:30 and actually enjoyed it, even if I'm not interested in psych. He uses relatable and funny anecdotes and explains things in ways I wouldn't consider. Very humble and down-to-earth, willing to admit when he is out of his depth. Some students are bothered by his slight stutter but I didn't mind at all or notice much.
Malley gets a bad reputation sometimes as people think he is arrogant. However, although it's annoying that his quizzes contain very specific, complicated questions from obscure parts of reading/lecture, he is a nice guy who appears to care about his students even if he doesn't know their names. Overall, if you do the work this class isn't hard!
Dr. O'Malley seemed to care about the material and his students, as he would provide help when asked or if you made a dedicated effort to go to his office hours (they were often cancelled or the times were modified). The material discussed in lecture did not usually correlate with the readings, which was a major cause for confusion.
He was a solid teacher and it was extremely easy to get an A. Your grade is based on 6 open note quizzes and small outside of class assignments which only took about 30 minutes. You will learn a fair amount and lectures are fairly interesting. He sometimes cancels class which was also nice. It is a great natural science credit!
He is a really funny guy. I was bored because of the content but he managed to make it somewhat interesting. All of the assignments are graded by the GSI's so just get to know them and you'll do fine. I would take it again if I had to but not for fun.
Honestly, this is a class that is completely dependent on your GSI, and this really should be a rate my class rather than rate my professor type of thing. Put in VERY LITTLE effort and you can get yourself a B. Not hard to obtain an A. 6 pop quizzes graded by your GSI which can go either way. Mine graded pretty easily.
This was his first time teaching a first year seminar and he killed it. The class discussions were all based on one book and he always kept it interesting. There are "pop quizzes" but he always hinted at when they would be and you were allowed to use any printed notes. Class got out early much more often than not. Overall, great and fun class!
easy class, reasonable prof
Psych 112 is a pretty easy class, 6 pop quizzes, no exams, some pretty easy homework assignments in discussion. Malley was a pretty cool guy! Lectures were almost always interesting and he was easy to talk to. Be prepared for the pop quizzes!
A very interesting class. Dr. Malley made every topic interesting and easy to understand. That being said it's not an easy class, you really have to work hard for your grade and make sure you keep up on work. I recommend this class for those who are interested in a natural science focused introduction to psychology.
The pop quizzes were somewhat hard in the beginning but this is a good class to take. Easy A.
He's a pretty boring lecturer but this class was basically show up and get an A. Easiest A I have ever gotten.
I took this class to fulfill my natural science requirement and I ended up loving it! not to hard but interesting material
Professor Malley is really nice and pretty funny. His syllabus is intimidating but reality is the class is very relaxed. He tries to make his lectures interesting. Your grade depends on pop quizzes so you have to show up. The discussion section is basically another lecture.
DO NOT take this class at 830 am unless you know you'll get there. If you miss lectures you will likely miss pop-quizzes which count for a lot. Most assignments are due at the beginning of class. He does not accept ANY late work at all and if you miss a pop quiz or anything, too bad. Not the nicest guy but an okay class (if its not at 830).
Class is mandatory and can't make up pop quizzes or assignments. Didnt learn much because a few classes he gave us tough readings and told us to go home without even teaching. Expected us to be prepared but often times was not himself. Unorganized.
Malley was the definition of fine. Psych 112 was not hard at all. It was completely dependent on your GSI. I had an amazing GSI so I lucked out. Beware of pop quizzes they can be very tough even though they are open note. Rest for he class is cake and you're lucky cuz one quiz gets dropped
Quite possibly the easiest class I have taken. Malley is an excellent professor. He really enjoys teaching and has some pretty funny jokes to complement his lectures. As long as you do all the work and pay attention, it should be hard not to get at least an A-.
All about the pop quizzes so basically you have to come to every single lecture to not miss one. They are open book, and only challenging if you don't pay attention or read beforehand. He is often absent for pain so you get a few days off but when he teaches he throws in a couple jokes, allows questions during lecture, and knows his stuff!
Malley is one of the better professors I've had. Great sense of humor and manages to make lectures interesting. That being said, it's crucial you keep up with lectures and readings! The quizzes are unannounced (but he always drops a hint at least a lecture in advance) and the questions are mostly open ended. I wasn't prepared and ended up retaking.
Great guy, and the class was pretty easy. I found his lectures a little difficult to follow at times and its a little inconvenient that lectures aren't posted. As long as you show up and take notes this class should be pretty straightforward, be prepared for those quizzes though as they can be challenging
super funny teacher. The pop quizzes were petty hard and are graded very harshly so be ware, but atlas there aren't exams. Take extremely detailed notes, including all of the examples he references, because he does not post the slides and you can use your handwritten notes on the quizzes.
Only open note pop quizzes that are graded very harshly but not super difficult to get an A. Take detailed notes and always go to lecture or else you won't pass since he doesn't post the powerpoints online. He's a really good lecturer and makes the topic very interesting so I'm glad I took the class.
The pop quizzes are boujee and he is a complete jerk off, to be honest. Everyone on here is boosting, and just take psych 111 without this professor lmfao
Takes his intro class way too seriously. Quizzes ask about the most specific word from his lectures that aren't on his slides.
Pretty cool guy. If you pay attention and make an effort to print out your notes for the exam its not hard to get a B+/A-. He does not give out A+ unless you go way above and beyond. Super good class for people who are interested in psychology and need a natural science requirement. All in all he's cool.
Poor lecturer, very little of material discussed in class ends up on quizzes. 75% worth of grade is easy to attain, other 25 is made up of arbitrarily graded quizzes. Good for fulfilling nat science req but If you have a real interest in learning about psychology do not recommend.
I like how the class is structured, and the material he talks about is inspirational.
get stuff done early and you are golden. e.g. required research participation or papers if you dont wish to participate. so much easier to get done in the beginning of the term. also, go to lecture and you don't really have to read other than for a few discussion assignments
Do yourself a favor and write down the entire textbook that he makes you buy. This guy preaches about how life is not hard and how everything will be okay, yet he grades his answers like a Nazi. If you're answer is not cookie cutter material it wont count. He is a delusional professor who does not follow what he preaches. Do not take this bum.
Malley is a really funny guy, but I didn't take his intro psych class to hear him crack jokes and share his own "opinions" about psychology. It seemed like he never really knew what he was talking about, because he was always having to ask the GSIs (who sat in the front) for clarification. Also, his pop quizzes are graded way too tough
Basically, you have Joe Rogan as a teacher. More than just a physical resemblance, Prof. Malley also has a history of martial arts, a great speaking voice, and is very intelligent. I encourage you to talk to him in office hours. As long as you attend class and discussion regularly, should be an easy A. No exams, just 6 open note pop quizzes.
incredibly confusing and difficult to follow. he constantly contradicts himself and although he acknowledges when he doesn't explain something well, he will not try to explain it in a different way. open-note quizzes which is really nice, but don't expect to do well on them, he does not prepare you to answer the quiz questions.
the material that he presents in class is explained fairly clearly, the issue is that the test questions are very confusing and not applicable to what is learned in class/on homeworks. discussion sections are VITAL, pray that you get a good GSI. do the hw for free points and the lab assignments. lectures are recorded which is nice.
The list of things I learned in this psych class is not very extensive. I did not really learn anything, but I did get an easy A by putting in minimum effort. You might not learn psychology in this class, but you will come out with an A on your transcript. Would only recommend to fulfill the NS requirement for lsa.
The professor is tough to follow even though the material is easy. He has a lot of opinions, can be condescending towards students who don't get his material, and grades his quizzes like someone unjustly wronged by the world. Easy A, but don't expect to take anything away from this class.
This class is ridiculous. The quiz grading scheme is so stupid and just the overall structure of how knowledge is being tested is horrible. I literally learned nothing in this class.
Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The grading for this class is absolutely ridiculous. Even if you copy word for word what he says in lecture for his open note tests, you will not do well. The average for each quiz is a 50%.
I think Professor Malley is a sound person. He's actually quite nice, and very accessible outside of class if you have a question or concern. Don't panic about the seemingly harsh classwork or quiz grading :) I panicked just about all semester, but ended up okay. If you put in the work that he asks of you, you will be just fine.
Psych 112 with Malley is a pretty easy class and I'd recommend it for natural science credits. Quizzes are graded extremely harshly and are super difficult (even though they're open notes). Ridiculously hard quizzes for a 100 level psych class. That said, lectures are optional (recorded) and assignments otherwise are super easy.
For the final paper, he specifically told me that it could "not be graded in any fair manner". Very tough grader.
Professor Malley would assign chapters to read and supplement the material with one or two video lectures per section. The grade you get in this class, during COVID at least, is very dependent on how dedicated you are to keeping up on the textbook readings and lectures. Self-discipline is key.
One of the nicest professors I have met in Michigan. He really wants you to succeed. However I would not take this class again because all readings and lectures were really hard to follow and they get you confused. The class was more wrapped around religion but not psych. Consider this class as your last resort.
I didn't interact much with Professor Malley much! He seemed very kind to those who did ask questions, though. The textbook and work was all on a separate site that was easy to navigate. His lectures were released over time, which I usually sped up a bit to get done with quicker. All in all, I had no complaints!
The quizzes are poorly explained without much explanations to why points were lost. Overall the curse is a lot of random busy work that is not helpful in combination with the quizzes.
This class was completely online when I took it except for discussion section. I relied on discussion since Professor Malley's inclusion in this class was pretty much just posting pre-recorded lectures. My GSI was great so I lucked out, but this could be a slippery class for a non-science major. The quizzes are horrible, so don't slip up.
He is so unbelievably hard headed. He is not understanding of students and has a god complex. Should be an easy A even though his quizzes do not match what we learned in class. What should have been a fun, inspiring class was horrible.
Super passionate about teaching but the material and exams can difficult.
You do not get feedback on exams unless you have time to make it to office hours. Pretty much graded on 4 exams, he drops the lowest one. Overall good professor, I struggled to do well on exams but did ok in the class
Good professor. Passionate about psych and will try his best to be clear about course material. His exams are hard but fair. You will do well in his class if you take good class, discussion, and homework notes. Pay close attention to class notes. All exams are open notes and in-person. Questions can be worded weirdly, but you get used to it.
Even if you use his own words from his lecture for his quizzes, you will frequently miss half the points on the question because of the hyperspecific answers he looks for. For example, instead of saying "use this term in your answer," you are just expected to know somehow which term he is looking for. Mistook black GSI for "little Asian woman"
Psych 112 with Malley- everything to know: - 8 points extra credit - 74 easy hw points - 6 quizzes 10 pts each; lowest dropped; OPEN NOTE but graded really hard and specific; my lowest was a 7 and my highest was a 10 but many did worse - take good notes on everythinggg - lectures are recorded - go to lecture after quiz 6, there is extra credit :)
don't take if easily offended
Dr. Malley was really nice and clearly knowledgeable. All of the HW is reading and answering questions about pretty hard to read texts, but as long as you give it a good effort he'll give you a 100%. Dr. Malley was helpful in office hours and gave me advice about things beyond the class. Would definitely take class with him again.
This class was easy and not a lot of work. Pretty much all test material was from lectures, so you absolutely have to watch them and take thorough notes. Malley is a good lecturer, just make sure that you actually have to write down what he says in lectures and don't just read the slides. I had very detailed notes and thought tests weren't bad.
Professor Malley was fine. His grading of quizzes was specific though. You need to have exact terminology and not just an understanding of the material. As seen on Atlas, he also is not the most respectful of students. Homework assignments often have nothing to do with content covered in assessments. If you are looking for distribution, avoid this.
Easy A for NS credit. Grade relies mostly off of online hw, which has no relevance to quizzes. Lectures are straightforward so take good notes for the quizzes. No exams, only short open note quizzes throughout the semester. Their structure is frustrating and it's hard to do well on them, but you can still get an A regardless. Lectures are recorded
Dr. Malley is an awesome man who truly loves what he does. His class was always entertaining, and I got a lot out of it. Quizzes can be graded harshly, but I averaged around an A- on them and got an A in the class with no problem. If you go to lecture, there are opportunities for extra credit. Great intro class with a great professor.
Do the achieve and take good notes for the quizzes and you can easily get an A. The quizzes are hard but make sure to go into office hours and review what you get wrong.
Lectures were interesting, but when it came to quizzes they were only like 4 to 6 questions that asked small details. So one wrong answers could kill your grade. But quiz questions didn't reflect what we learned, hat toss on how you did (could be good or bad). On the other hand, some days he gives out extra credit for class attendance.
He is an amazing professor to me. Very forgiving if you are responsible but beware of his quiz, it is not easy.
Dr. Malley is one of the best professors I've had. His lectures are interesting and he is very organized in his teaching. As long as you take good notes during lecture and have a basic understanding of the concepts, you should be fine. There are no tests, just quizzes, and they are all open-note. Malley also offers extra credit. I highly recommend!
Great professor and class! Quizzes are hard but if you take thorough notes you should be good (make sure to listen to specific examples he gives in lecture, not just lecture slides) and lowest grade is dropped. Extra credit is offered and textbook work is super easy. Would def recommend if you're looking for a pretty relaxed NS credit.
The way he does quizzes is horrible because you can only answer the questions in one sentence. He's also an anthropologist so I picked up a lot of the natural science concepts better than others because I also took an Anthropology class. I would take regular 111 over this class if you can.
His lectures are very interesting, and he makes the concepts easy to understand. Yes his quizzes are weird, but you can drop the lowest one, and if you study enough you should be fine. He gives out extra credit too. Only real thing against him is he can come across as strict and rude, but not to the point where I would call him strict and rude.
Dr. Malley is a very nice man when interacting with him one-on-one - don't be fooled by his tough attitude in lecture! The quizzes he gives are semi-difficult, but they are open note and anyone who puts in a good amount of effort and takes good notes should get an A.
Attending lectures is key! The quiz answers rely solely on lectures, so the bookworm isn't very useful in that sense. Still do it because it's easy points and helps your grade a lot.
He's a very conscious person and cares a lot for his students. You can tell by the small things. I'm also shocked at how well he understands the material/ how engaging his lectures are.Your gsi also contributes to how much you'll enjoy the class. Make sure to read the textbook for the quizzes, and don't forget to do the hw on time.
Dr. Malley was generally kind, and a little rough around the edges. He sometimes disagreed with science which sat wrong with me but its whatever.10 pt tests every 2-4 weeks, so confusingly written. The book is never talked about in lecture but you HAVE to read. Everything is open note. Extra credit is offered quite often
I enjoyed his class and the material posted but often felt as though he disregarded the needs of students, such as his policy in which missing a quiz for any reason resulted in an automatic zero. This policy extended to all absences, including that of a friend of mine who was hospitalized.
Dr. Malley was an engaging professor and gave very interesting lectures. He's a nice guy, but he is a ridiculously tough grader. The material in this class is incredibly confusing, and lecture usually doesn't help clear up any confusion, so be prepared to do poorly on a few quizzes with little explanation as to why.
Nice guy, tough grader, class is very manageable if you are willing to do the work, extra credit offered at the end of the year and sporadically throughout lectures, so attendance can help. Go to office hours. Lectures are engaging and cover interesting subject matter.
Dr. Malley is an incredible professor. I loved his lectures and went to all of them even though he doesn't take attendance. He is funny, likable, and has a very unique teaching style. There are quizzes instead of exams, but they are very difficult. My advice is to take Achieve seriously (HW is not posted on Canvas) and do not memorize the material.
He is a nice guy but his quizzes are downright annoying. The class is weighted heavily on them and they are worded in the worst way possible and you can only answer in under 2 sentences. On top of that, no explanation as to why they are wrong or what they were looking for. take 111 over this class. It was truly the biggest nuisance.
Dr. Malley is very passionate about what he teaches. This class has no exams, but quizzes instead. They are graded particularly hard and if you forget to mention explicit terms points are deducted. Definitely do all discussion and achieve work. 112 is not incredibly difficult but take very good notes in both lecture and discussion.
This class was way more annoying than it needed to be. You need to get decent grades on the quizzes to get an A because there are so few points offered, so I found myself rewatching entire lectures the night before quizzes just to get a consistent 80% each time. There is extra credit offered during lecture, but the questions are extremely specific.
It doesn't sit right with me that there are no exceptions for makeup work - even if you are genuinely sick and unable to come in to take a quiz, it results in an automatic zero. I hope this is changed for future students.
The quizzes can be tricky, but attending lectures and using resources like unstuckstudy ai really helped me stay on top of the material. The workload is manageable if you're willing to put in the effort.
The professor's lectures are unclear, confusing, unorganized and cover large swaths of information. He does not help his students succeed in quizzes- no lecture slides, lecture outlines, study guides, practice quizzes, etc.
Quizzes are super difficult to study for as there are no resources to help students succeed. Really not worth taking, take another natural science class instead
He's a nice person and you can tell he cares about the material and students. His quizzes are very frustrating. You can only answer every question with 1 singular sentence, and he's extremely specific in what hes looking for. The questions often feel unclear and open ended despite him wanting a very specific answer. Answering correctly isnt enough.
Class is easy if you take notes on everything he says in lecture and go to Q&A sections before quizzes. Get subject pool done early and the extra credit will be very helpful.
Don't be afraid if you fail the first quiz, I got a 45% and still ended the class with a 95. As long as you take good notes on the lectures you will do well! Very interesting topic and he seems to care a lot about what he is teaching.
Lectures are interesting and I recommend rewatching before quizzes! Quizzes are difficult but weighted very lightly compared to credit-based homework assignments. Offers a decent amount of extra credit and interesting lectures, did poorly on the first two quizzes but ended with an A.
This class had interesting content but lectures would often go off on a tangent. The exams r fr and you will only do well if u pay attention to all parts of the lectures (specific wording, terms, examples, etc.). He is not a great professor & he makes use of inappropriate examples for content. The quizzes r ur grade & criteria is not super clear.
You have several open note quizzes throughout the class, drop the lowest score, they are open note. His grading criteria is a bit strange, but he does offer some extra credit here and there. Have a good relationship with your GSI because a lot of answers come from discussion. Textbook is online. The lectures are boring, but it is important to go
Class is formatted terribly.
Tried to talk to Professor Malley about my circumstances and confusion in the class, and straight up insulted me. I attended lectures and discussions frequently and learned nothing of substance from this class. No intro psych class should be structured the way Professor Malley has this class set up. Get these professors off of their high horses.
While his lectures are interesting, the quizzes can be extremely confusing. He requires very specific terminology in a single sentence. Be prepared to rewatch lectures and take DETAILED notes. If you get a bad grade the first time, don't be too stressed; People tend to do better as time goes on. As a whole, really hard for an introductory course.
Dr. Malley is a great professor. His lectures are very captivating, and he is very good at using cool animations and innovative slides. The quizzes can be difficult, but they get easier as the year goes on and you are allowed to use your notes. He is very knowledgeable and answers questions during the lecture.
Though quizzes are open note, you are expected to remember every small detail from lecture. The questions can be ambiguous and he refuses to acknowledge that. I don't understand why we are paying over 100 bucks for the textbook when it is rarely even used and he admits that a good portion is irrelevant. Overall, difficult professor to work with.
Had weird and inappropriate comments with most of the content, always making things sexual to be funny?? Also, the quizzes were immediate fails if you didn't have the key terms he was looking for. Only good thing about this class is that there is no final exam.
Malley was an awesome professor who really cared about what he was teaching. I will say his quizzes, although open-note, are extremely difficult and criteria is not always clear. Do not be surprised if you fail the first exam, I did, and still ended up with an A. He does gives extra credit, so take advantage of it.
Pretty nice guy but literally says a whole bunch of nothing. Quizzes are VERY specific if you don't say exactly what he would you won't get points. Attendance isn't mandatory you can watch from home. Office hours are at unreasonable times too, so not the most accessible. Extra credit and discussion will be your saving grace in redeeming your grade.
Show up to lecture & discussion for miss the extra credit opportunities. The first quiz we recieved was not clear in what it was asking, and the next quizes do not do much better. However, I would urge you to do all the homework and worksheets as that matters a lot. I'd recommend going to office hours very frequently. He assigns work during breaks.
The reviews for Prof. Malley are too harsh. I am horrible at Natural science, but still earned well above an A with two bad quiz scores (55 and 60). They are hard, but SUCH a small part of the grade. Homework and discussion are extremely easy, and most of the points. Do not let the reviews about the quizzes discourage you from taking this class.
Super chill and funny guy. Great lectures. The quizzes are tough, but I didn't do that well on most of them and still got an A. Just do the homework, which is super easy, go to discussion section, and you'll be fine. Great to take as a NS credit if you're not a big science person.
Very nice professor. The workload is very minimal and the homework is easy. The quizzes could be challenging, but they are open-note. I rarely attended the actual lecture tho but the recordings are always uploaded right after class and very clear.
