EXCELLENT! His class was a pleasure to attend. As long as you are intrested in the subject you will LOVE it. If you're not, you may find it enjoyably avg. otherwise, great prof. that cares about your grade, but still makes things easy. I am going to try my hardest to take his 200 level class next fall.
GREAT.Prof. Maule is the best! A very intelligent Prof. who knows what he is doing. His class was fun and very much informative. This is a Prof. who cares a great deal about his students. It was a pleasure to be in his class. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
he's alright, i guess!
Maule is one of the best prof. I have ever had. He expects you to read the chapter prior to his lectures, but keeps class interesting and fun. He also gives a lot of tidbits that you will take with you use long after you leave his class. Very FAIR!!! Great Teacher!!!
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR!!!!! His class was very interesting. He cares alot about the well-being of his students and encourages the students to pursue their goals. He gives a great review prior to his exams.
EXCELLENT PROF. CLASS IS TAUGHT WITH POWER POINT, GOOD REVIEWS BEFORE EXAM. THIS PROF REALLY CARES. GIVES GOOD ADVICE. HIGHLY RECOMMENT THIS CLASS. VERY INTERESTING!!
HE IS BORING
This Prof. is one of the best. I too now have a "thirst for learning" and will take all of what he taught me and put it to great use. He expects you to study the selected chapters/course material before class. Be prepared to join in the class discussion. I wish I could take another class with Prof. Maule -
VERY ORGANIZED AND HELPFUL REVIEWS EXAMS HELPS WITH 7 PAGE PAPER DUE. HELPS UNDERSTAND MATERIAL. EMAILS THE CLASS MATERIAL AND REVIEWS FOR MIDTERMS AND FINAL.ENCOURAGES FURTHER EDUCATION.HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PROF
the teacher has a damm chip on his shoulder he left class early knowing damm well i have a spanish class prioR to his could not take final until five months later because my spanish final ran over time to take his final i arrived one hour into test and he left anyway. He has a bad attitude RUN AWAY FROM HIM
This professor is pretty cool! he only expects you to participate in class and read the text! only the mid-term and final are important and he prepares for that. he may jump around the syllabus but he's pretty much to the point. you better know your stuff because he knows his and he will negate what he thinks is right and/or wrong. Take him!
e is an excellent professor. he grades material fairly but he does exect his students to read. IF you study the handouts, and the powerpoints that he provides you will be fine. his exams are more than fair.
He is a great professor! He prepares notes and power points for the class and emails them to everyone. I hardly looked at my text book for both his exams. He counts the midterm and Final the most along with participation. He definitely goes out of his way for the student and this is why I really recommend him. TAKE HIM. YOU CANNOT FAIL!!!
Great prof. gives you tips on writitng papers and test taking..gives ou 100 questions before every exam with questions that will be on the exam the same way he gives it to you..emails all power points and an outline for every chapter..a paper that is like 8 pgs..gives you the answers for exams when he reviews
He is a great professor, he knows what he is talking about and he is willing to help. I recommend anyone to take his class. He is the best, he is a cool teacher.
Great prof. participate even if yopu are sure of the answer. He emails the powerponts and the notes you dont have to take just print out the powerpoint. The paaper is 10 pages but put great effort and the tests midterm and final he gives you the answers the class before the exam study the 100 questions and sure A.
best teacher i ever had he is so cool i got a b only because i barely studied for the midterm he will pass you even if you show up he knows what he is talking about
One of the best teachers at John Jay I must say, dont expect him to pass you that easily.....but if you show a interest in this class and do some work, your going to earn your self a good grade! He is very intelligent and loves to poke holes in arguments! Very funny also! Definately recommend you to take his class if you want to have fun! 10/10 =)
"The Goal Is Not to have a degree but to have an education" - Prof. Brian Maule
Professor Maule is an amazing professor. He is tricky with questions and encourages you to think. If you do your work, you will pass.
Definitely professor-material. He encourages students to think for themselves, & as he always say, "Don't go past the obvious, the answer's staring at your face". Criminology's a fascinating course. Maule just happens to enhance it. Midterm, Final, & a 8-10 pg paper. What more can you ask for?
You'll love this class! Probably, one of the most motivating! Brian Maule is a very smart, educated, dignified, cool and funny person. But you still have to study - I got an A, but there were only 4 A-s out of about 30 students, some even failed - so, no free A-s given out.
He is a very distinguished teacher. Not only is he intelligent, but he encourages students to think outside of the box. He has several degrees and is very encouraging. He allows for open and mature discussions. Even though I got an A, he is not an easy A. Only 3 or 4 students out of about 30 got an A, but he's one of John Jay's BEST!
He's an amazing professor!!!!! knows his stuff, cares a lot for his students, has 6 degrees, hes extremely intelligent..DEFF take him.. he seems mean and strict at first but then he loosens up.. do your work and you will pass! deff recommended! i enjoy his class alot, deff taking him for sociology 203.
He is amazing! he really knows his stuff and is willing to help you. I got the only A in the class. It is not an easy A at all. you should def. take him! you wont regret it. he gives you the midterm nd final questions beforehand!
He is a very intelligent man, and highly logical in his discussions of various topics. Being in his class has put alot of things into perspective for me, and we had discussed many key issues today. He is definitely an excellent professor and I recommend him to anyone interested in sociology.
Best professor ever!! take it!
Great professor. He's very intelligent and his class discussions are interesting. Participation is very important in his class, you have to make sure he knows your name. Overall he's good and I would recommend for anyone to take him !
He's a tough teacher and grader but he tells that to you on day one. He loosens up as the semester goes along and he is very professional at his job. He's knows when to be funny and serious. I recommend him.
Amazing Professor Maule , he is very clear helps you out a lot specially since soc 230 is not an easy class specially that 12 pages term paper i first i thought i was not gonna do well but the way he explain things you can't fail his class i seriously recommend him.
Favorite professor! I really hope I come across him again in a future class. No homework! He gives us study sheets that are very helpful for the exams. He says we have quizzes but he hasn't gave any yet so I'm not sure about that. His class is super interesting and he's a great man. He also states his opinions a lot which I love about him.
GREAT. class time was spend on discussions. he really wants his students to learn like he says is not about the degree but about the education. class discussions are based on the readings that most of he would provide. midterm final and 6 page paper. he also gives the best study sheets. overall, great professor
Very intelligent Professor. Theories are always complicated but he does his best in explaining it. Attendance is a must and doing the reading assignments are a must. At first I thought about dropping the class, but 3 weeks later I was glad I didn't. Gives out review sheets for midterm and final. Wants his students to leave the class having learned
LOVED MAULE! Funny at times, great lectures& very insightful. I declared my major as Criminology because of his class. His tests are pretty straight forward and he gives the review sheet and goes over all the answers. Great class & guy. Participation is A MUST or he will call on you unexpectedly. Being on your phone during class will get you yelled
One of the greatest professors I've had at John Jay, if not the greatest. Witty and incredibly intelligent and insightful. BUT YOU WILL WORK! And he will do everything to help you! This is not a class for cry babies or people who think they know everything, because they will get shut down QUICK! I would take this class a million times if I could.
Professor Maule is the best professor I've had so far at John Jay. His lectures are interesting and insightful. Midterm, Final, and 8-10 pg term paper are his requirements for this class. He provides study sheets for midterm and final. Although you will work, it is not overbearing. I recommend this class 100% .
Prof. Maule is a great teacher. He gives a midterm, a final and a paper. He is a good grater, but you must work for it. You have to attend to class, participate, and read the slides. He will explained everything very clear. I definitely recommend him.
i love him. i took him twice, for soc 203 and then soc 240 on Saturdays (that should say a lot) the greatest teacher/professor I've ever had. so smart and funny you wont regret it. if your lazy then you'll get the grade you deserve. i would do anything to take another class with him again. he cares for his students and helps them pass.
Maule is one of the best professors that I've had at John Jay. I've had him for three courses. Come to class, pay attention, participate, study the review sheets and you will pass. He is a reasonable man and a fair grader. He holds you to a higher standard than most professors so he seems hard but he isn't. He just wants you to give your best.
Awesome teacher! Class was always interesting and discussions were thought provoking. Participation is a must or he will call on you. Midterm, final, and 6-8 page paper. Gives pop quizzes if he feels the class is not doing the readings. Taking him again next semester for 2 classes.
Maule is by far the most amazing professor I've ever had. I graduate in June and have taken three classes with him thus far. This will not be an easy class, and if you're like me you'll want to drop the class the first two weeks. But stick to it. He makes you want to stick to it.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA, HE DOES NOT CARE AT ALL. ALL HE CARES ABOUT IS SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES WHICH HAVE NO PURPOSE OR MEANING IN ANY CAREER OTHER THAN TEACHING SOCIOLOGY 101. EVEN IF YOU TRY HARD IN THIS COURSE, HE WILL GIVE YOU A C ANYWAYS. FIND ANOTHER PROFESSOR WORTH YOUR WHILE, LECTURES THE ENTIRE CLASS, NOTES ARE IMPORTANT!
Makes you work for your grade. His lectures are extremely important if you want to pass. He gives you a review sheet that's usually on the tests, but you still have to study or you will fail. Mandatory attendance, no electronics allowed. Final paper 6-8 pgs, isn't clear what he wants and gives low grade.
Smart professor but very strict. VERY TOUGH GRADER. Do not take if you're looking for a good learning experience. Lectures all class, material is extremely difficult to understand. Overall terrible class!!!
Dry course. He expects you to read and be prepared for next class sessions. Gives quizzes but let's you know beforehand what it's on. very tough grader.
Brian Maule is intelligent but is very condescending. Lectures the entire class with no personality and is very egoistic. I believe he has the attributes to be an extremely good professor but chooses not to be. He needs to loosen up on technology, no lap tops aloud in class for notes, this is college not high school. Also can be very arrogant.
This is my third time taking one of his courses. I wish I would've taken him for more of my SOC classes. He completely changes the way you see things. In every class of every course I took him in I ALWAYS learned something new. He is hard on writing, but in the long run, that made me become a better writer. He also never misses a class.
Hard class to understand to begin with. Professor is pretty strict but is intelligent. Tests are tough and paper assigned. Trying to meet his expectations for an A grade is pretty impossible. Very dry class.
This class was very boring. Social theories are hard to understand. The professor is passionate about the class but is a tough grader. I wouldn't take it again.
He is a great professor he prepares you for your senior capstone class he don't play. He is an example of how a professor is suppose to be and teach. He makes sure everyone has a chance to pass and learn properly read the chapter in his book you will pass also use quizlet.
LOVE LOVE LOVE him!! One of the best professors I've had so far. Very funny and he makes the discussions very easy to understand. He's hilarious and makes you feel comfortable when asking a questions or commenting!
Professor Maule is one of the best professors I have ever taken. He is very intellectual and genuinely cares about his students that he sees are putting in effort. Yes, his papers are hard but it helps you in the long-term. And he is definitely generous with your final grade. Only professor I don't mind taking an 8 am class for. :)
I enjoyed my semester with this professor, he hates cell phone but to be honest during his lecture it wont be missed. the material is engaging and thought provoking. He's paper is hard but he gives you plenty of feedback to improve. If i wasn't graduating, i would of taken him again for another course.
Cool guy. Strict with attendance and no phones/laptops allowed. A midterm, final and a paper.
Professor Maule is amazing! At the start of the semester, he made me feel like I was incompetent but after getting to know him better and showing up to every class. I realized that he was not insulting me but was actually trying to inform me ! This man is really brilliant. Everything you thought you knew about the Law, he'll confirm that you didnt
Very tough grader. However, he gives you the opportunity to rewrite your papers which is great. He just wants you to improve your writing and you can't blame him. He truly cares even though he says he doesnt. Takes step by step leading up to your proposal due at the end of the semester. Gives you many examples to try and understand the material.
YOU WILL LEARN ALOT . DONT USE YOUR CELL PHONE OR GET CAUGHT USING IT
He's tough when it comes to grading because he gives only what he thinks the student deserves. However, he knows how to make his lectures interesting and incorporates stories to makes things more understandable. He gives a review sheet for both the midterm and final that's very helpful - most questions are exact.
Only allowed three skips before he reduced grade by a letter grade, is very knowledgable in the topic, knows how he wants things done but is an overall great professor
Very knowledgeable and in my opinion one of the top professors at John Jay. His method of lecturing is by having discussions with the class and all the information you need will be on black board slides that he provides by email, so don't even buy the textbook, well atleast this was the case for my 314 class with him. DON'T USE YOUR PHONE IN CLASS
Possibly the best Professor at John Jay. For the individuals who claim that he is a terrible or hard professor: you probably did not care about school to begin with. He is extremely intelligent and he will help you improve in every way possible. I will be taking again him next semester. I recommend everyone takes a class with him.
Prof. Brian Maule is an AMAZING Professor. I had never see myself wanting to attend to a class so EXCITED. He helps you understand the class to the max, and helps your writing. He is one of the best professor John Jay has. In his class you will have a Midterm, 8-10 pages paper, a Final pop-quiz to make sure the class is reading (buy the book).
Professor Maule is one of the best professors at John Jay. Keeps the class very engaged and keeps the lectures interesting. Social order theories can get repetitive and boring to read about but Professor Maule teaches it in a way that makes it very interesting. He is a tough grader but he tells you what he specifically wants on the paper. Great guy
Honestly, this Professor is by far one of the most respected Professors in John Jay College, and he's great. Go to class and work for your grade. He is helpful, and gives amazing feedback. He cares about his students and wants them to get the most out of a course that most of the time is super boring. His lectures are entertaining. Participate!
This professor is amazing. He is tough, but he is also fair. He gives you chances to redeem yourself and makes himself available to help you if needed. Honestly if you failed this class its because you did the bare minimum and didn't take advantage of the help he is willing to provide.
Maule is clear about his grading criteria and policies from the very beginning. He breaks down complex concepts for even one to understand. If you look confused but do not ask questions he will ask you one. This is not to pick on you. He wants everyone to pass his class. The class is neither easy nor hard. You receive the grade you earn.
Social theories can be boring and repetitive he finds ways to make it interesting. He's a very intelligent and caring professor but does not tolerate slacking. Participate as it can boost your grade. No cell phone use. Only a midterm and final, review were given and the questions are the same as the review sheet. No extra credit.
ONE OF THE BEST .
Brian is very clear about his criteria of grading he is a wonderful professor and really cares about his students. if you participate in class and do all his homework you should be able to pass with A like I did. He really knows how to get you engage in class and I love it so much for me he is one of the best professors so far. Just participate!
He seems strict but he's not that bad. Midterm and final are 30% each and there are reviews. Just gotta do the textbook reading (or skimming) and if he cold calls you then it won't be so bad. Once he learns everyone's names he starts cold calling like crazy
The textbook readings were like 3-8 pages, nothing major. He has powerpoints and gave us 1 pop quiz. He WILL call on you randomly while discussing lectures in class. Midterm and Final review, most of the questions on the review sheet are on the final. He was an amazing teacher
No homework. Just a paper, midterm, and final. The material is tough to understand and he tries his best to explain. You HAVE to read the book and participate to do good. 71 on midterm which was tricky material. The course itself is hard. He tries to scare you how your grades in undergrad matter and says to drop out if you fail midterm.
He changed the course and we didn't do a paper so we only had 3 grades the midterm, final, and attendance/participation. Participation is heavy he will call on you even if you don't know the answer. Very hard class, hard material to understand.
Professor Maule has high expectations for students to succeed in his course. However, he cares about his students. The course consisted of Midterm Exam, Final Exam, Participation, and Attendance. He assigns a review sheet and half of the questions appear on both the Midterm and Final.
1 research proposal. Each part is due on specific dates and you will have to turn each part in after doing his corrections at the end of the semester. There is one midterm so read the textbook and slides. He gives a review sheet that has 50% of the questions for the test. The test is a mix of multiple-choice, t/f, and one-word fill-ins.
I would highly advise against taking this professor. He is a "know it all", has stereotypical thoughts about certain people. He generally does NOT care for his students. No consideration for personal issues or COVID-19. He tends to favor certain students and it shows based on who he allows to participate. TERRIBLE VIA ZOOM! Not tech savvy either.
Not a lot of work handed out but the test was kind of difficult.
3-4 discussion boards, midterm, final. You MUST go to class, camera ON and ready to participate. He'll cold call once he learns your name. Provides most of the material via PPT slides, txtbook is mainly backup. Fun character, slightly intimidating but he's worth putting in the time and effort! Grade drops after 3 missed classes. 5+ absences F.
Professor Maule is a lecture heavy professor and you will work for a good grade. If not for a lot of personal matters I would have completed his course
He may seem uptight at first but he is a really good professor. He knows his material and will make sure that you know it. He asks questions and interacts with students throughout the class. There were two exams and 1 discussion board to do. He provides the textbook free of cost. He will also give you some good advice during your class too.
Prof Maule was great. He wants all of his students to succeed, even when they may only want to pass. You must show up to every Zoom class with your camera on and be ready to participate - but if you do, you will do well. He grades by attendance, participation, 2 discussions, a midterm, and a final. Show up to the review classes and you'll do fine!
A terrible professor I have ever taken in this school and here is why: No one in his class has gotten above a C. If you ask him a question about an assignment it's like talking to a wall because he won't answer. He will tell you to read the syllabus for everything. Unhelpful, carless, and the rudest professor I have ever met. Take at your risk!!
Horrible. Rude to any student who has questions, makes you feel like you're stupid for asking anything, grading is ridiculous, and gave nothing higher than a B to students who showed up for every class, handed everything in, and participated. If you don't answer his questions exactly the way he would answer them, he wouldn't accept the answer.
If you don't pass this man's class you aren't putting in any effort. I was in a summer session with him for 5 weeks. And one of those weeks I missed, he told me that he would still accept me in his class and helped me figure out the issue. This man is phenomenal. Respect him and he'll respect you. He knows his material and is passionate. 10/10 recc
Outstanding soc educator. He demonstrated an exceptional ability to engage us w/ complex soc concepts. Possesses a profound knowledge of the subject matter, well-structured lectures & thought-provoking discussions. Mentoring & guiding is commendable & has significantly enriched the learning experience.I wholeheartedly rec him.
Well at the beginning he sounds a little bit too intimidating but once you start getting into his class lectures he gives great examples and a really good explanation of the constitutional principles definitely helped me understand the material though
This takes the cake for my most frustrating class yet. He grades HARSHLY for problem analyses & quizzes without feedback. If you don't write it exactly how he wants, you're screwed. I know Brightspace is confusing, but he gives us zeros for assignments he never assigned. If you email him about literally anything, he's extremely rude & unhelpful.
Great lectures however he is a harsh grader. Wouldn't take him again.
Professor Maude is a very lenient person if only you respect and follow his class rules and expectations of the course. He is always open to help you pass the class and is a great professor. Doesn't allow any electronics however but he is incredibly helpful. Also doesn't give any homework except for maybe 2 exams and a final.
Professor Maule was my favorite Professor this semester. If you like learning about law this is who you want. There are a lot of class discussions. The tests were fair. Textbook was required but he provided a lot of info via power point. Looking forward to taking him again.
If I have to give my honest review about this professor is that he's very harsh. A harsh grader, a harsh Professor overall. I've tried my best to keep up with his online class, watching video lectures, answering quizzes, and doing papers that never give on time feedbacks. Good luck to future students.
Professor Maule is a serious, no-nonsense instructor who genuinely cares about his students. His lectures are well-organized and thought-provoking. There aren't many graded assignments, but he's clear about what he expects. If you're looking for a professor who challenges you while still being supportive and invested, he's the one.
POL/Law 313. Struggles with tech and should not teach async. Sent angry emails, yelled at a student on the phone, and reacted poorly when quiz errors were pointed out. 3 of us reported his behavior to the department. It's possible he is no longer fit to be teaching; several interactions raised serious concerns about his awareness and temperament.
Professor Maule has a no phone or electronics policy, so buy a notebook. If he feels like people are not respecting his rules, he gets a bit stern. However, he is one of my favorite professors at John jay. We don't submit work online, the essay was handed in in person or emailed. Review sheets given for exams. super funny and understanding
NO ELECTRONICS, buy a notebook. There isn't one day I regret coming to his class. he gives lots of regular life advice during his lectures, gives review sheets for exam. Assignments are handed in person or emailed. he's funny and can sometimes be a bit stern but only if he feels like a student is not paying attention. I would def take himnagain
