He knows his teaching materials very well. He understands what majority of his students have been going through and he is giving his best knowledge to help them.

Pretty cool instructor, but sometimes boring. Sometimes on the dorky side, but hot nevertheless.
very good and cool teacher. fair tests. fun labs!
People say he is the easiest bio instructor at DA, and the tests are much much easier compared to McPartlan's. Tests are tricky though because you can have more than one answer. Take notes in class amap. He is hot.
the best all around bio teacher out there, but dont be fooled the subject is hard regardless of the professor.
very cool guy. he's so intelligent! however his midterms are a lil tricky. mult choice with mult answers-- no partial credit on scantron! but the 2nd part of the test is an essay (which he gives you the questions in advance) so it is easy.
He's not an easy teacher if you're looking for a guarantee A class. But he's very nice and helpful!
MCCAULEY IS REALLY GOOD! I WOULD DEFINITELY RECCOMEND HIM FOR THE WHOLE BIO SERIES. HE KNOWS HIS MATERIAL AND IS ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP STUDENTS. HE DOES GET KIND OF LAZY AFTER THE FIRST OR SECOND MIDTERM...BUT ITS ALL GRAVY. AND HE IS REALLY HOTT!!
HE IS THE BEST TEACHER FOR BIO. DEFINATELY RECOMMEND HIM FOR ALL 3 QTRS. HIS POWERPOINTS ARE VERY HELPFUL, MIDTERMS ARE STRAIGHT OUT OF HIS LECTURES. HE IS EASIER THAN ANY OTHER BIO TEACHER ON CAMPUS. HE IS VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT THE SUBJECT.
He is a nice guy but his exams are multi-multiple choice base. That's means you need to answer all of them correctly in order to get the point. It's quite a hard part in his classes..!
He is an excellent teacher. A bit tough, but if you apply yourself you'll do good. Usually entertaining to go to his classes too. Too bad he's married.
best bio teacher de anza has, his lectures are fun and makes bio easy to learn. also very helpfull and well always answer your question even if you ask 100 times. BUT, he's also the HARDEST grader, even if you study very hard most people dont get an A
One of the two best instructors at DeAnza. Enthusiastic, very helpful, dedicated, and tests are challenging. Has a great attitude about subject and students. hates cheating w/a passion, so don't!
Great teacher. If you are a SCI major, take him. If you are just taking it for fun, take him. If you don't want to put any effort into it or refuse to apply your brain, then dont.
his power point lecture is very clear, but he is very hard on the tests.
He is rude, lost without his powerpoint, can't explain a thing i ask, lost during labs too. horrible horrible. what else can i say.
Yeap, his exams were very difficult. But, he has PhD. So he knows bio very well. It is possible to get good grades. So take 2 classes max. You must devote many hours for this class. I am very happy with him. Excellent lectures! Now I know bio very well!
McCauley's class is the best bio class I've ever taken, and I'm a bio major so that's saying a lot. It was the hardest class of them all, but totally worth the time I spent studying because I learned SO MUCH! Exams are tough, so don't slack off!
Bio 6A was the easiest because..who knows..he was easy. Bio 6B was tough because he was so into gene stuff. Bio 6C..oh god, don't take it with him. Take it with Vicky Jennings or at Foothill. It's unbelievably hard with MC.
he knows what hes talking about and he brings all the stuff he read into the class. but hes very unapproachable. i wouldnt recommend taking him for 6C.
Extremely unapproachable. His tests are extremely difficult, and class grade is nearly entirely made up of test scores. Very unforgiving format, and he is effectively killing my love of biology.
he motivate my interest of biology, the tests were not that hard... just record his lecture and listen to the tape at home. If you remeber all the the points that he shows on the slides, you can get A easily. btw, his lab is easier than other instructor.
Loved the class! Great instructor, the best bio class I've taken. Lectures are all on power point, if you study those and skim the book, you'll do fine. I don't think he's as tough as some have said, the material itself is tough, but he makes it fun and very clear!
Great instructor! His lecture w/ powerpoint is extremely clear. He knows his materials very well.Tests are hard but u learn alot in his class. He's always there for u. If you'r serious in study,u'll definitelylike him. He's a nice& very knowledgable.Science major highly recommended!Greatest bio teacher
no doubt the tests are hard but if you pay attention in lecture, read the text, and ask questions, it's not so bad. HARD CLASS but study -- no one ever learned from anything that was easy.
<-- the ratings say it all.. he's pretty tough but will explain any and every question you ask him. a very nice guy and willing to help out EVEN outside of office hours and outside class time.
awesome teacher! he's nice and is approchable. His lectures get boring sometimes ( but i think tat's cuz of the material). Just go through his lectures and skim the book, you'll be fine. His tests are fair..the only bad thing is his multiple choices have more than one answer!!
Brian is an awesome bio teacher. He really knows his stuff, and his classes are really rewarding cuz you learn a LOT. Don't expect an easy A cuz if you slack off you're toast come exam time. Simply put, you can't study too much for his tests - his MC questions are KILLER. 6B is harder than 6A.
The lectures are really helpful, but it's definitely a good idea to read the textbook. The MC parts of the exam definitely take a little getting used to since they ask for all that apply, but then again, they just cover all the major concepts that you're supposed to know.
Very coool class. But very hard! Not really hard but you just have to study! GREAAAAT midterm study guides. he gives you all the essay questions in advance and picks one for the test. super coool! i don't know what these people are talking about, he's totally approachable!
this teacher is great...now im really enjoying biology...tests are based on the lectures...tests are fair...lab is tons of fun...he's a really great person....i really enjoy the class!!!
WORST TEACHER... and he's so stupid, in a surfer way... his test is stupid as well... multiple choice test, but each multiple choice is a multiple choice... so it's really a multiple multpile choice test... which is stupid... i got stupid taking his class... this class won't help ur GPA, especially if ur doing a TAA... go back to the beach!
This class is hard, what you need to do for an A is not only study his powerpoint notes but the textbook as well. Once you do, the multi-Multiple choices questions make no challenge on you. Believe it!!
Multiple choice tests can have multiple possiblilites, like the answer could be both A and B. This makes the chance of guessing right 1/24! Asks an essay. Hard grader on that. Expects us to to literally put the bio book word for word into our brain. Also, mess up one test, impossible for you to get an A. Beware of his lab exams. Avoid if you can.
He knows everything! His lectures are kinda boring, but he's very helpful and enthusiastic. The labs ROCK! But his test is a nightmare to me. There are multiple choice for a multiple choice question. The essay is actually the easy part, as soon as you understand the stuff, it's ok.
He is freaking hard. There is no way u can get an A, unless ur hella smart. Multiple-multiple test, which sucks becuz u miss one,u miss it all.No EC,no curves,no nothing. Lectures r boring, he is willing to help u tho.i think u should save yer GPA and avoid him. If u need Bio 6A, do it with McPartlan, even tho they both are good teachers.
so far the best teacher in De Anza! read the book, read the powre poins, spend the lab time efficiently(not for chatting)and you will get an A. he is very helpfull. if your major is biology, defenatly take his class. he is hot!
His tests are hard (more than 1 correct answer for each multiple choice question), but he gives u essay questions in advance, which helps a lot. He's EXTREMELY nice and helpful, always willing to answer ur questions over and over if u comes to his office. Labs are full of funs. Strongly recommend for Science majors.
EXCELLENT bio instructor! He is super nice, patient, helpful and enthusiastic and he knows biol SOOO well!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! Labs are fun and informative! Excellent preparation for science major. Tests on basic concepts and he gives out study guide and essay questions in advance which makes studying alot easier!
Best bio teacher at De Anza ever. He's a nice person but his tests are terribly hard with more than 1 right answers.Be sure to study his power point+ read the book+ come to his office hour. He's very helpful and wiiling to help.Highly recommended for science major.Study hard!

This guy sucks! he doesnt know his lecture is extremely boring! tests are extremely tricky and hard! multianswer-multiple choice that doesnt make you learn anything but be more confused. nice to those who are active in labs but not all. very bad at logistics. never let you know your progress. three freakin hard midterms, 1 lab and lecture final!!
Prof McCauley is the best Bio professor!! I wish I had him for Bio6B as well. The best part about prof McCauley is that he is willing to help u and gives u a full lecture in office hours going over all possible essay questions on the exam. He doesn't mind questions, and will teach u until u understand. U have to be willing to learn in this class.
Great bio teacher;lectures slowly and clearly so we students don't have to rush taking notes and take in the information slowly. The tests are mainly on concepts, applying it. As long as you work hard, studying his lectures, study guide, and reading the book, you'll do great.Oh, also make sure you write legibly as the midterms include writing essay
Makes exams difficult just to be difficult. Multiple choice with more than one right answer (bubble in A and B and C or no credit) and super picky on essay exams. Is helpful during office hours, but not clear in lecture. Has favorites, and hard to do well if you're not a favorite. Lecture and lab are unconnected and the material is unorganized.
This is a great teacher. He knows how to teach. He's very approachable and nice. Biology is a hard subject so don't blame the teacher, he's actually easy, so don't complain. He Makes biology interesting and fun. Tests based on lectures. Gives study guide for each test including final and 1 of 4 essay topics on study guide is on test.
His tests are hard just to be hard. He makes more than one answer per question so no partial credit. Most students study off previous quarters tests because thats the only way to understand them. Unfortunately I didnt know that till after the final. Unless you kiss butt in his office hourse you will not be happy about your grade. Be warned.
he really knows his biology, both with and without his power point. very helpful during office hours. there are multiple correct answers for every question on his midterms so that could throw you off. but he's really picky on his essays; u should write them up before the test then go over them with him during his office hour. that is, if u aren't t
The multiple-multiple-choice test is hard but the essay part is even worse. He expects every details from the textbook to be transfered onto the essay portion of the exam.
He will give you the best starting to biology world if you want to take it seriously. Highly recommend, you need to work hard but will harvest the most.
hes a very helpful and nice teacher. tests are very hard--multiple choice questions have more than one answer and essay questions need every single detail in them. i didnt need to use the book in this class because exams were based on lecture notes. if you take him be prepared to work for your grade.
He really isn't THAT hard! If you just listen to his lectures and study the powerpoints, it's possible to get an A. Tip: PRACTICE writing the essay questions from the study guide!!! SOOO helpful!!! He's pretty laid back, but he really wants you to learn the material so he expects alot from you. Highly recomended if you're interested in biology!
he's awesome... i didn't do well in the first exam. but for the next one, prior to the exam, i went to his office hour, and he explained so well. did very good in the second exam. essays help study a lot... highly recommend him. and he's hot!!! he's also very funny.
Take him. He is great bio teacher.
lecture and lab are difficult, you MUST attend lecture to get a decent grade, but he wont force you. Lab is mandatory but fairly intresting. He's a great teacher and will work with you to understand the material. reminds me of a surfer but he really knows his stuff. oh and make sure you erase clearly on your tests cause he wont fix your mistakes.
It's funny that my Chemistry teacher warned me about this teacher, however I was already enrolled in his class. If you want to get an A, it is extremely difficult. For me, I went to class every day, studied when I got home, and bombed all of his multiple choice tests. His tests include a multiple choice portion and an essay portion. The essay porti
His lecture exams are crazy hard, but its possible to get a good grade if you study well. Go to office hours as much as you can, and prepare the essays in advance! He's super helpful.
Super hard, i listened in class, went to every single lecture and still couldnt do well. maybe its just me but the essays were extremely difficult
he is really nice and helpful.just go during his office hours and u'll be good for essay portion.but his MCQs are extremely hard, especially in 1st midterm(may be i didnt really know how to study at that time).but if u study hard, u can recover later.i got B even i got really low score in that midterm.ESL students shd take him,he talks really slow:)
he's a really good teacher, and he knows his stuff. i like everything in his class, except his multiple choices(he also said he was a multiple choice genius!). take him if u r hardworking. u wont be disappointed!!
i dont know why i didnt take him for 6B.:(..i m scared of heyer's lab final!!
he is probably the best teacher i've ever had in de anza. very clear power points and excellent explanations!! take him if ur major needs bio.
His tests are hard, but if you study, it'll be fine. Just go to his office hour. He's extremely helpful, and willing to help u. He sometimes skipped his lunch to answer ur questions!!
Not the best teacher! when he talks he makes you want to go to sleep and his material wasn't linked together well: sometimes he'd go into detail in one topic and cover another one just slightly to understand what to learn GO TO HIS TUTORIAL HOUR especially before every test. even if u dont have a specific question.
I wish he still teaches 6c.I dont know about any other teachers. They might probably be harder than himm..Please teach 6c Mr. McCauley..
The best teacher I have ever had in my entire life. He has inspired me a lot, i even changed my major into pure Bio after Bio 6B. All you need to do to get good grades is: write ur essays before the tests, ask him to check them out and give advice, and study his slides.
the best instructor i've ever had. i m now so upset cos he is not teaching 6C. anyway, bio is hard regardless of teacher, and of course, u have to study if u want a good grade..he is very clear on what he expects u to know..
i spend the most time and got the worst grades for his class. he's boring, the material's dry, gives LOTS OF PREPERATION WORK for just ONE EXAM, makes you feel like quitting biology after your first midterm, but. he's helpful, and nice, sometimes. i don't recommend him though. he made my gpa drop sooo low. ): lab is fun though
PLEASE dont ever take him! half of the class failed. HARD essays plus MC with M answers....its a GPA killer, dont even think about it
this teacher is so hard to begin with...exams are killer multi multiple choice answer with extremely long essay. lab is okay... study really hard if you wanna take him
BEST. TEACHER. EVER. If you want to really study Biology, McCauley is the best choice at De Anza. It was hard at first but when i got used to it, his class is my WORLD. He is HOT too. Go to his office, ask him question, study his slides, prepare the essays. THEN YOU WILL GET A, GUARANTEED!
The lectures are not mandatory but the labs are. It is pretty clear what he wants for his class. The midterm exams are tough(Multiple Choice with multiple answers and an essay question). Make sure you go to the study sessions because you can review previous tests and the tutor goes over each possible essay question.
almost finished 6A. i love the class and can't wait for his 6B next quarter. i heard he's the molecular & cell bio GOD.
Class was really hard. He is a decent teacher; has a certain elitus status to him, if possible take another teacher.
You might think he's hard at first, but when you get used to the materials and his tests, HE IS DA BOMB! I'm so glad that I switched to McCauley for 6B. At least he pushes you to study and know your biology, unlike Heyer (boring, blah). If you major in Bio or Pre-Med, I'd recommend McCauley over Heyer, especially for 6B!
If you're a bio major, you should be studying hard, anyway. What you want is a good experience, not an easy A. McCauley will give you that experience in 6B. He's passionate about what he teaches, and those who bother to listen to him should get at least a B. Remember to ask him for help before the exams; that's kind of how you succeed.
Wow what an experience. I'm glad that I decided to take Prof. McCauley at first place. I loved his classes, especially 6B and the lab. I had my best time with my partners and Biology.
He is the best professor ever and ever and ever
Mccauley is quite possibly the best professor I've had through college. He knows his stuff and answers every question in a second. Go to his office hours, read the book and you should do just fine. I wish I could take him again.
He's the best biology professor I've ever had. He's inspired my interest in the subject, especially cell and molecular bio. Highly recommended! Fun, clear, and useful labs. Precise and content lectures. Go to his office hours, do the essay questions in advance, study his slides and you'll be fine. He made Bio6B a blast! Wish I could take him again.
he's a pretty difficult grader especially with essays on the test. If you're not good with understanding, and great with memorization, this class is NOT for you. Boring, un-interesting..and you'll most likely end up with a B- or C.. if you try hard enough like I did, a B+
He is an adequate explainer in lecture, but the exams KILL,because they don't quite reflect exactly what he taught.People used to say he was good, I don't think that holds true anymore, because I'm seeing people fail lab exams,midterms..multiple answers on multiple choice is the worst I have seen by far,and the essays require a GREAT amount of detail
I didn't like this class, although I do like biology and think that it is the most interesting and important science.McCauley is a great teacher, very friendly and helpful, but he makes bio much harder than it is.I didn't understand his logic so I could get used to his tests.Lectures are boring, and he is sooo boring...
I can agree with the person below me and say he's a great person overall, however the logic on his tests are completely incomprehensible...very very tricky tests, and every detail is required on the essays...especially for Bio 6B where you need to include every enzyme/molecule in the essay....I tried the best I could, and ended up with a C+ :(
Anyone who says he isn't fair or that his tests are illogical are people who expected a walk in the park. McCauley is a great guy and a great teacher. Biology isn't a class thats suppose to be easy. You have to read text, review notes, etc. If you make an adequate effort then you will get a good grade. He isnt hard at all and if you study = A-B
RUN if your lazy! This guy knows what hes talking about and wants you to be able to do the same. I agree the multiple mc are tricky, but it balances out with the essay. Do the essays beforehand and your good! And if you miss the details it dont matter he just wants to see if you understand the material. Know your calculations for the lab quizzes!
Study for his lab quizzes!!! he gives 6-7 quizzes throughout the quarter. The multiple choice is very tricky and prepare well for his essay questions on the exam. If you though mcpartlan was hard this guy is tough, but 6B is overall hardest in the series. He is a very knowledgeable teacher and very helpful. Don't slack or you'll end up with a C.
Arguably one of the best professors at De Anza. Dr. McCauley is a decent human being who knows lot about what he teaches. He will literally answer any question you have. Ask away and be prepared to learn.
I LOVE HIS CLASS! He is extremely knowledgeable in what he teaches. His office hours are highly recommended. He's one of the few professors who is always willing to speak to his students if they need help.
great teacher. knows info. oh and hes hot!
Very cool professor. Easy going and smart. He's willing to answer questions if you go to office hour.
very hard. specially for international students. I am so regret after took 2 of his exams
Cold and indifferent to students and their learning. Exams is a guessing game/ multiple choice/ but not really multiple choice test where a machine spits out your score. About 1/3 of exam material did not come from the textbook or the lectures (I know because I record his lectures and read the book). Horrible teacher.
Essay questions is not hard. If you go to his office hours, he will tell you if your essays are good enough. If you didn't get 15/15 in the essay, means that you never go to his office hour. Mc Questions are tricky, but they are well related to the lecture notes and text book. (all there!) He is the best and helpful professor i ever met.
Very knowledgable and passionate. To me, he 's like a live biology encyclopedia that will give feedbacks to every of your question in less than 1s. He'll be there for you if you need help. Just study if you want to be a bio major, or considering a major change if you want your life to be easy.
He is simply the most inspiring professor you will ever meet. Only after you are done with his class at the end of the quarter, will you appreciate him even more. I love him, he's great. He Inspires me to become a Biology Professor, and yeah he really is a walking encyclopedia!
One of the best professors ever, and definitely the best bio professor I've had. Taking his class confirmed my interest in the subject. His class is not easy by any means, but it is doable if you are willing to put in the time and effort.
By far the best professor ive had finishing up my second year up at de anza. just took his final and its amazing how much ive learned in the last 11 weeks. taking the final, i realized how much i actually learned rather than just recalling the information.would recommend him to anyone who is serious about bio. 6B IS NOT AN EASY CLASS
He is one of the best professors I've ever had. He cares for his students and his lectures are super clear (he recorded them for us along with the slides!). His tests and quizzes are not easy but it's not impossible to get an A. Just listen carefully to the lectures and study hard before the tests then you'll be fine.
He really cares about his students. Always willing to help both in office hours and lab. Don't waste his time though if you're not serious about learning. Very clear! great lectures and labs! he made me fall in love in the subject!
McCauley is probably the best bio teacher at de anza, Atleast for 6A, judging by the reviews for the other teachers. I'm about to finish his class, and i underestimated it. I usually try to find the easiest ways to pass classes, but with 6A you have to put in work. Record his lectures, and study his study guides broadly.
Great teacher! I've seen many Bio teachers before and he's definitely one of the best. His tests are challenging and tough, but IMO the Final is easier than the midterms (good for make up!) The labs are GREAT! I don't think if you can find such a high quality lab in any CC or even some Universities! I think he curves the grades with a mid B
If you value your gpa don't take his class. I got an A in McPartlan's 6A class and I've been STRUGGLING.His tests are HARD, you have to fill in multiple bubbles for multiple choice questions if more that one answer is right. No partial credit given.Focus on ur essay responses those help ur grade.Don't take him if you don't have to. He's not nice.
When midterm averages are a 65% and the failure rate is 2/3 of the class. It must say something, any 6B class is going to be "hard", but his test are quite unfair. Most people would've passed without his unique style of grading. Say A, B, C are right there is no all of the above choice you must mark all 3 to get any credit, no partial credit given.
McCauley is an awesome teacher but can be really hard if you don't act like a student - i.e. go to class, do homework, do labs, & STUDY. He can get a little boring in lecture (monotone) but if you pay attention he is a really thorough professor. Being able to draw is a plus.
The labs are much more complicated than 6A, which was stressful at times. I don't think it is too hard as long as you put energy into studying, and even though I hated it I still got a B. I relied a lot on his online lectures because it was hard to stay awake in class. Tests aren't super difficult, he only tests lecture material.
Prof.McCauley is definitely the best bio teacher in De Anza. He is very helpful and willing to help. I recommend going to his office hours. Lectures are very clear and full of information.
Now that I transferred to UC and took a bio upper division classes, I appreciate him even more. He prepares you so well! his exams may have more than one choice but they are straight forward. He is very helpful and patient with students who wants to learn. the best biology prof at the De Anza for sure!!
Yes McCauley is hard but when you transfer to a 4-year university, you will realize that he is trying to prepare you for what's ahead. I got an A in his class because I went to his office hours, read the textbook, listened to his recordings, and read the entire lab manual in preparation for the lab exam. Stay on top of things and you'll be fine.
Probably one of the most enjoyable classes I've taken so far, especially the lab work involved. That said, McCauley is ridiculously comprehensive on his tests, but they aren't impossible. Go to his office hours for help; any questions you have he will immediately answer. He excepts a lot from his students, but the work you put in will pay off.
His lecture is very informative and helpful. He does not expect students to know a lot of different things but to thoroughly understand the materials. Tests are very tough, so be prepared to read and listen the recordings again. Hardest class I have ever taken but totally worth it. If you really want to learn, totally recommend!
McCauley is a tough, but fair professor. You can tell he is extremely passionate about what he teaches. Tests are definitely hard, but they're also straight forward. You either know the information, or you don't. Be sure to study up on the essay questions. You can make up a lot of points there. Overall I loved this class, and I learned SO much!
While this class was one of the hardest I had to take, I really did enjoy it. You can tell that McCauley is super passionate about both his students and what he is teaching. He will definitely help and give you feedback if you ask for it. Be sure to record lectures! They're long, but good. You get the grade you work for so work HARD.
You must put in an insane amount of effort in studying. You have to know the content of lab and lecture ridiculously well. Your essay portions better look like they are text-book worthy. His class is extremely tough. His lab rarely corresponded with the lecture material. Our class average for exam 1 was around 59% and he blamed us for it.
Love this class. If you can prove that biology genuinely matters to you (taking good notes and studying hard), you can do well. He's tricky on tests but if you study lecture recordings every day and ask questions, the tests won't be a problem. And Lab exams are fairly simple. Do essays in advance and have him critique them for 15/15.
Do not take this class if you have no interest in Bio. Good teacher who goes into detail but this class is just hard.
Of course McCauley is hard, but he will answer almost any question you throw at him so there's no reason to fail and then complain about help not being there. Trust me, compared to a UC bio course this class is a cakewalk. If you have a good understanding of the material then the multiple choice multiple choice won't throw you off so much.
This class is definitely difficult, but you will learn a lot if you put in the time. He is very knowledgeable and is always there for you. Record lectures and be disciplined about listening to them after lecture. Though tests are multiple answer, if you spend quality time studying it isn't too bad. The tough part is having to study lots of material
HIS CLASS IS SO HARD. I am a bio major and I spent days studying for his tests and I still got an F. His lectures are so boring and long you can't concentrate on what he's saying. His tests are so hard and he expects us to know every single detail as if we're doctors. Don't take him if you are a bio major or if you wan't an easy A. :
HE IS SO AWESOME!! I took him for 6A and now I have him for 6B. His tests are so intuitive and they really put your knowledge to the test. He's kind of passive-aggressive and scary sometimes but really he's good-natured and willing to help. The multi-multi choice wasnt really an issue (most questions had one answer anyway). Take him if you study!!
McCauley is a great professor. He genuinely wants his students to excel. His lecture exams are notorious! He says they're not tricky, but... I and many others think they are. However, if you study enough and truly understand the concepts, then you should get a passing grade. His lab exams are the easiest lab exams I've ever taken.
Relatively challenging, but very clear about what you need to know. Emphasizes big-picture thinking over detail-oriented memorization-- You need to not just understand the basic concepts, but also be able to synthesize information. Happy to answer questions, gives detailed study guides, interesting lectures. Put in decent effort and you'll get a B.
make sure you show up to lectures and answer all the essay questions before the exams. His exam are tough, especially the multiple choice. There could me more than 1 correct answer, and I really did not enjoy that. His lectures are long and boring! avoid him if you can!
Super hard class! Get ready to study really hard. There is an essay part for every exam which worths 1/3 of the grade, and Dr. Maccauley grades really really tough. Also, his exams will get harder through the quarter.
I've learned so much in Mccauley's class! Always, and I mean always rely on his study guide for lecture exams, I regret bombing 2 of my exams thinking that just reading the book based on his slides would be enough. He is also very open for questions. Pretty chill in labs.
Bio 6A and 6B with professor McCauley was very fun but also pretty tough but makes you learn subject. He is pretty passionate about the subject and his lectures were pretty interesting if you like Biology. His test are difficult but if you spend time writing the essays and checking in with him you should do okay. Labs in 6B is calculation heavy.
McCauley has a very low voice. I sit in the second row, but I could hardly hear him. His lectures make no sense and he changes his slides too quickly. He is a good man and knows his biology, but class is very long and boring. He gives pop quizzes in his lab, so always be prepared with a scantron and study the lab before you go to class.
No clear instructions, info, and updates about lab reports. Expects you to rely on his website for everything. Exams are 30 multiple choice w an essay. Gives you a study guide w 3-5 essay prompts - where 1 will be given on the exam. This means you must practice all of those essay questions! Exams have multiple answers for each question, so beware.
Brian is nice, but has unclear criteria on tests. He'll give you a study guide in advance, but with so much material it's hard to pinpoint what he wants. Lectures are also boring and unclear. He enjoys talking about biology, but doesn't EXPLAIN things well. Lab is ALSO very unclear, leaving you to depend on his website. Beware pop quizzes in lab.
It is not clear what he expects and wants to see on written exams. Very tough grader for essay portion. He is very kind, does not get mad and often jokes in lecture. Ask 1 question and prepare to get a 30 min answer. His website is the main source for info about lab work and lecture study guides.
mccauley is a great prof. he emphasizes on the big picture rather than detailed memorization. gives study guide & essay questions in advance, do the essays bc it helps a lot!! lecture can be long & boring, but he's really chill in labs. exams are very tough so make sure you spend time studying. i loved his class bc i learned a lot.
Lectures tend to be boring but I recommend printing out the slides and taking notes on them because he does cover relevant information (also, easier to study later on from the textbook). His labs are pretty confusing but just ask him for help and follow his website closely! He would be happy to go over your essays before the exam and that helps!!
Probably the best biology professor I have ever had. I was a C student in AP Biology at my high school and when I came to De Anza, I took Mccauley in my first quarter here. If you record his lectures and stick to the study guides, you will be good for this course but Mccauley expects a lot out of his students.
Honestly, he's legit one of the worst professors ever. I missed an exam due to illness, and instead of accepting a valid doctors note he attacked me by saying I "miraculously" got better the day after the exam, even tho I was sick for an entire week. Additionally, very unclear expectations and useless website which he forces everyone to use.
CONS: Unclear criteria for long answers, long lectures, not very responsive through email, tricky questions on multiple choice- choose all correct answers or no credit. There is no partial credit or extra credit. No excuses. Doesnt care if you fail. PROS: detailed and in-depth lectures, good feedbacks to questions if you meet him during office
Hardest class I've ever taken. Make sure you put 110% effort in everything. A lot of work. Makes you work extremely hard just for a passing grade. Lectures are incredibly jam packed with verbal information. Slides are useless. Be sure to record lectures otherwise you'll be lost. Won't care about you unless you show him you're serious about class.
McCauley is honestly one of the best professors I've had. He's passionate about the subject, and although his lectures are heavy, they're organized and flow well. For tests, he provides clear and very helpful study guides; nothing is a surprise. Lab was also super fun. If you're dedicated, you'll do amazing and truly enjoy the class as well.
He is a great professor. He was able to deliver the contents we need to learn through online classes, and his grading is fair. If you are looking to take Bio 6B, you should def take him.
