Nice guy. Helpful & will answer any questions. However, his lectures go all over the place. Don't bother taking notes because you will go crazy! Final grade entirely based on essays, which are graded easily. I would recommend if you are just looking for credits and are not an ANTH major.
Nice teacher but leactures are non-existent, he doesn't control class room discussion very well and seems like we're not even talking about the subject of the class most of the time. Grades super easy and essays aren't very challanging.
Nice guy, but half of the time I wondered what I was learning about. I thought that I just might go crazy in that class. There's 2 tests(short answer & essay) and 4 papers.
A good teacher to take if you like to write. Easy grader, but lectures are too unfocused. He graded this class on four essays and about 12 weeks of journal entries. Very nice guy.
Very unfocused and unclear, did not teach the subject at all and kept going way off topic. Very easy grader
I am so glad I took this course. He is very smart and a great lecturer. very enthusiastic. I had hom for 430 tooand will take him again. Take this prof!
Truly awesome teacher. I'm thinking of being a doctor and he helped me understand medicine in a way that changed my way of thinking. funny, great lectures. student debates a plus.
nice guy, smart and will challenge you!
you will never be bored in his class. dynomite talker, very very very thought provoking
I learned a lot in this class.
Nice guy,but very unorganized. Changed his mind on the syllabus and on assignments all the time. Always went off the topic, half the time I didn't know how anything we were talking about related to the class. Starts taking attendance towards the end of semester so he has something to give points for
The class was unorganized, but he did make it very interesting. The assignments were easily but enjoyable yet made you actually think, that is a rarity in college. Did go off material but everything that was brought up was interesting for the most part. Take him if you like to think.
He has to be one of the nicest professors at this university and his assignments are actually fun and interesting. He does have a tendency to go off on tangents, but he is not bad and gets back on track. He is always willing to help and I highly reccommend him!
If only all my college experiences could be as awesome!
he is a very nice guy. if i had not been a business major i would have majored in athropology that is how good of a teahcer he is. take him, you'll learn alot and he makes you think.
The very best teacher at UofM-Dearborn. Great guy, powerful speaker, thought provoking; and most of all very understanding that students have a life outside of their schooling. I would reccommend him to anyone in college regardless of major, you won't be sorry. I wish I could take the class over!!!
giftet teacher. He made me think. Enjoyable
had him this summer. a good teacher. Lively. papers were interesting
Do what you should be doing and you'll be fine. Lots of reading and writing but it is worth the effort. I'm looking forward to taking another one of his classes.
The class is easy, show up most of the time and do the work, particpate in class and talk to him! He's a really intelligent guy with good stories, the class is fun and interesting, too.

Brian is a great guy, will help you with any problems you having, and will not simply ignore your comments, will actually listen to what you have to say. Great thinker, needs some work on organization and getting work back on time, but other than that, TAKE his class, it will be enjoyable if u make it
He is the best teacher i have had here at Dearborn! he is really cool and funny and he makes his class very interesting!! i highly recommend taking this class!! he really is a great guy!!
This professor is GREAT. Talks about stuff that actually matters in life. Three five page papers, but VERY easy. You don't have to read anything for them just write what you feel and EASY grader. Midterm and Final, review in the class before test he gives you most of the questions and grades easy!
One of the best teachers at U of M. He makes his students think and make use of their brains. He doesn't overwork you, very leniant if you need extentions on papers. He's very easy but, it still requires hard work and hes very intellectual. Funny too. You'll Learn alot
This is definately an easy A class. He is so leniant about everything and practicly just gives you an A if you try. Midterm and Final are very easy and study guide given beforhand. Definately hard NOT to get an A.
Great teacher, I'm taking another class with him. All the reviews are true, very nice, understanding, lenient, great at teaching, knowlageable, makes you think. He introduced us to new situations in our society that actually affect us. The class has a holistic view of our surroundings/environment. Note must wright 3-4 papers, midterm, & final.
Very easy class, but you will learn to think in ways you never have. 4 five page easy papers and a midterm and final. Doesn't really stick to the syllabus but is very knowledgable about his subject and open to all points of view. Very interested in his students and supportive! Great teacher!
The instructor is very liberal so if you're a conservative stay away, his lectures, as well as having to read Churchill's book will make you MAD. Occasionally, his lectures are entertaining. His grading standards are a joke. The few assignments that he gives are easy and so are his exams. Take this class if you want to boost your GPA.
take this professor. he gave me a new way to look at my life. very smart and very kind
this class was so interesting, not much work to do and if u do it all u will get an A, but makes u look at the medical field, the government, and life in general very differently, interesting lectures although sometimes a little off topic, and very in detail and intellectual, good eye opener!
This is the best class I have ever taken, out of any class I took, rather it be at UMD or in HS. The lectures are extremely interesting, I enjoy writing down side notes of important points he touches on. He really makes you think hard, about life, the world, our country, and yourself. Your be glad you took him, I sure I'm
Awesome, easy, fun. all there is to say.
He was the best prof. EVER. I truely enjoyed going to class, hes so nice, and interesting. Easy A, just two small easy papers. He gives an extensive review be4 the midterm n final, so its an easy A if u take good notes. Ud be real dumb 2 get less than an A in his class. Again, hes so awesome!
This profesor expanded my knowlege like no other. He is one of the best Prof that i ever had.
Best Professor yet !!, very caring, very understanding, anthropology is truly his passion, will work with any student, you would have to try to fail his class.
Crème de la crème. Very straight forward, tells you exactly what he expects. Makes the learning environment fun. He has a charismatic personality that draws young people to him by the droves. He goes the extra mile to help you learn. Offers extra credit. I wish all professors were like him. I'm going to miss going to his class after it ends.
At first, I started reading all of the material. I soon realized that it was unnecessary and you should take notes on everything (literally, everything) that is said in class. Usually takes a while to respond to emails, but an easy grader.
Good teacher, interesting, easy going. No papers for this class, two multiple choice tests and PLENTY of opportunities for extra credit. Does have a tendency to stray to the topic of current politics (I wouldn't have minded if we were talking about ancient politics) but overall a great teacher.
I've taken all his classes and i'm really sad I can't take him again. Best professor on campus imo. Has a real passion for what he does and is really flexible with the class.
i am a biology major and took him because someone told me to. It was better than i imagined. take him.
One of the Best professor ever. Definitely precise in his teaching. Must take him.
Getting ready to take classes again and will take him in fall. You should too.
The best professor at UMD. Helpful, understanding and smart but not the easiest.
If he knows you by name, you will like the class, he has a sense of humor and always open to any new ideas and change.Exam are from whatever he speaks in the class,he will do the review show up in class and you will do good
Seriously, it doesn't matter what major you are in, take him at least once if you can. He's awesome, but if you're a hardcore supporter of capitalism, you might be annoyed by him a little bit. haha...he's a big time socialist. Anyway, he's a brilliant guy and I actually wanted to come to class every time. TAKE MCKENNA!
This Guy is funny and awesome... he has really good points and makes light of the fact that we are fools! he is funny and knows how to teach a class...
I just graduated and he is probably the best at UMD. I've taken every class he teaches and my only regret is he doesnt teach more classes.
He's funny and class is fun.You like going to class and you learn a lot.We watched like 4 films,1 exam, 3 papers, and 1 final. The final is take home and essay, but it's somewhat difficult. This was an overall good class. I'm still not sure if we needed the books or not,but they're pretty interesting.
Wow, I don't even know where to begin. This professor is by far one of the coolest guys I have ever met. He makes class very interesting, and really gets you thinking about what he is talking about. He is a very fair grader, and offers plentiful extra credit if you need it. He completely changed the way I think about medicine. One of the greatest!
cool professor. he makes the class interesting, and funny. even thoough i fell asleep most days. you dont really need to read the book though, just go to class and get your 5 points everyday for turning in your thoughts on a certain topic he chooses.
It was my first semester at UVM and i am really glad that i had a golden start with Prof. McKenna. He is smart, genuine, funny and very easy going.I miss him and his class.I am looking for any class that he teaches that i can take and i am hoping i will be lucky to be in one of his classes again.Take him if u can i promise u won`t regret it.He rocks.
After graduating from UMD I find McKenna to be the best professor I ever had.
After graduating from UMD I find McKenna to be the best professor I ever had.
Take every class he teaches. You'll be amazed how much he teaches you how to think and analyze stuff. he's also really nice too. He really is one of the best profs I ever had. There is something really charismatic about him, and he has a way of making you excited about studying anthropology. He is super into activism.
Mind blowing!! He will knock your socks off. Easy A if you go to class and read the book. Very fun, incredibly fun class. You'll learn a lot, but its not traditional learning. He believes in a lot of radically different things one of which is anything can be curriculum. One of the best professors I have ever had.
I never expected to learn all this stuff. McKenna is absolutely the best teacher I ever had in my life. very smart. he loves anthropology. Take every class with him. I'm taking him again next semester.
This professor is wonderful! I wish all teachers would be so enthused about teaching and about their students learning. Absolutely a wonderful teacher. He is very open to all sorts of subject matters and does not make a person feel as if their opinion does not matter. This is truly a class that all are welcomed and encourage to participate.
Attending class is mandatory. There are questions from the book on the mid-term and final; however, his class discussions have nothing to do with the text. He frequently talks about capitalism. I learned very little about anthropology, but I learned critical thinking skills. You are practically guaranteed an A.
He is very exciting to watch and keeps the class interested. He is very open to suggestions from the class on what projects to do. He is very easy going as far as papers go. He has a good sense of humor. Best professor I've had at U of M-D
McKenna is awesome! Take any class you can, he challenges you to think outside the box. His lectures do get a bit off topic, but he will surprise you with what he talks about. Exams not too bad, and didnt use the book at all for first half of semester
Awesome professor. really gets you thinking about the topic. I had him for Medical Anthropology 2 years ago, and it is a fond memory of mine. I now think of bio-medicine in a whole new way. One phase about sums it up; "Bark at the MCATS" haha. Take him if you ever have the chance. he will change the way you think.
Honestly one of the best classes I've ever taken. He is also one of the best professors I've ever had. You will learn ALOT, take him at some point and you will be thankful. What education should be.
I am a biology major and did not know what to expect. I learned more here than in high school. McKenna is smart, funny and very caring about students. I'm thinking of switching to anthropology.
take him!
Best teacher at U of M. The way he taught was informative and interesting. You learn the material and critical thinking at the same time. Take any class he teaches- you won't regret it.
I had him this summer. He was one of the best profs I ever had. Very smart and caring.
McKenna is amazing!!! I have very fond memories of his anthro class. He does go off a bit on tangents in lecture, but you learn so much about life and he opens you up to a whole different perspective on life. And yes, he is really easy. Just show up to class, because you DO get points for attendance.
Truly an awesome guy.
He loves anthropology and it is very contagious. We do lots of fieldwork assignments. This is my favorite class.
One of the best Doctors period. all around one of the best teacher in this World, take him and learn.awesome stuff
One of my favorite profs of all time. Very lively, funny, and edgy. I actually liked going to class and looked forward to it. He LOVES class participation, and it does seem to affect your grade. Only buy the textbook, the supplemental books were never required or discussed in class.
Was an amazing professor...loved going to class because he was funny and interesting. I will take more classes with him if he's still around. Maybe even minor in anthro...Eazy Peezy class..make sure you go and you'll do great. He's not the greatest at replying to emails but who is nowadays? Take him. the end.
He was the best.
He applies to Anthroplogy what Frank lloyd Wright applies to Architecture.
Dr. McKenna is the MAN. I loved his class... it was super easy, we had a paper due midterm and a final project. Most of your grade was based on attendance. Class was soo much fun! He is hilarious and really opens your eyes. I highly recommend him for upper-levels!
I loved his class. Very helpful and entertaining! Made me want to go to class!! The books were not needed but they were cheap. If you need anthro take him!!
Dr McKenna is awesome. Fantastic class. I am taking another Anthro class with him.
loved mckenna. registered for his medical class.
Mckenna is so spaced out lol bu in a good way. But I enjoyed his class, currently taking another class by him. Easy A, he doesnt believe in giving failing grades. He teaches more about the REALITY of the world more so than anything. We rarely used the books, and he grades the exams on the curve. Just come to class, engage, and youll be just fine!
Interesting class, but be prepared to discuss capitalism- a lot! Grade based on huge group project (approx. 20 pages) with presentation at the end. Great Class.
very helpful and interesting
great and nice person. take him
Sweetheart, beautiful and spicy spirit, a rebel to his core. Extremely approachable, caring and devoted toward the issues. Fair grader on assignments. Upper Level Course that will bring your GPA up...very relaxed environment, be prepared to laugh.
He is awesome. I would take him again in a heartbeat. I miss his lectures. It is very eye opening and interesting. You MUST take him.
two five page papers, a midterm, and final.
Class consist of 2 five page papers, midterm, final, one large presetion, and one small one.Attendance is 10% of grade.
Class consist of 2 five page papers, midterm, and final. Attendance is 20% of grade.
great professor! funny, nice, understanding, and passionate. its nice to see a professor care about what they teach. class was very easy didnt buy any of the books or do any of the readings. he tells you literally all the questions AND answers that are going to be on the tests. had three papers, not too long, pretty easy. Great class over all
He is so funny, he gives a review before the test. Have a couple of short essays. Very easy class, show up and you will pass literally.
I've token all five of his course because he dose not believe in using grades as away to punish students. One of the best teachers I have ever had.
Dr. McKenna is one of the best professors at UM-D. I have taken several of his courses and his passion for pedagogy is inspiring. Reflection papers, Midterm essay, final project.
Love McKenna hes a really cool guy, loves to teach. His class is pretty easy. Just show up to class and you will be fine. There is a couple of papers throughout the semester and a midterm final. Best teacher at UMD!!!! Take him you honestly wont regret it!
BEST TEACHER EVER HANDS DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TAKE HIM
Dr. McKenna is amazing! I recommend taking him. You do not need to purchase the book, he gives exam reviews that you can search for online. He is extremely funny, laid back, and respectful of all students. If you show up to every class, study for the exams, and respect him, you will get an A! He is the reason I want to be an Anthropology major.
I learned more in his class than any other course I have taken at UM-D. He is very inspirational. I found myself looking forward to coming to his class because it was so interesting. I was able to gain actual, useful knowledge in his Doing Anthropology course. I can't say that for most other classes. He should be teaching at UM-Ann Arbor.
Professor McKenna is amazing. He truly cares about his students, each and every one. It is an easy A if you do the work and try. He is always there for advice and tries to make class interesting and get the students involved. I love this professor!
Professor McKenna is AMAZING! I took anthro with him first semester of my freshman year and I was so nervous. I sat the first day and took 3 pages of notes, little did I know all you really need to do to pass the course is show up and participate. Easy A if you don't just sit around on your phone (he hates that). Will be taking anthro325 with him!
Dr. McKenna is amazing and I highly recommend taking him if you have the chance. He is fun, passionate, and very respectful to his students. He is by far the smartest man I have ever met. You will have to put in some work, complete all assignments, and attend lecture. If you do those things, and A is easily achievable.
THE BEST EVER!!!! TAKE TAKE TAKE TAKE TAKE TAKE.
If you do not take him YOU WOULD MISS ALOT. Amazing person. I LOVE THIS GUY Take him take him take him for any class .... fun fun fun fun
Best professor ever. Very intelligent, loves to give out A's!
Take this professor! You will learn a lot and there is not much work to do. Just show up to class, meet his expectations and you'll get an A.
BEST PROFESSOR ON THE PLANET. I wish he taught all the classes. Very VERY chill but you learn alot!!!!
He gets us
the best professor at umd. very easy class, he understands that education is about learning things and not memorizing a few terms and spitting them out on exams. he teaches you life changing aspects in class and is just in general a very good person. very easy class, show up, do the work, read spark notes the day before, and you'll get an A easily.
Take him. Whatever chance you get. TAKE EVERY CLASS OFFERED WITH HIM.
The best Prof at U of M-Dearborn, hands down. I took just about every class that was offered with him as the prof. Some classes were easy and some required a ton of research and writing, but you picked your own topic to research so it was interesting, not hard. For his enviro anthro class I turned in a roughly 60 page term paper. TAKE HIM!
Dr. Mckenna is A M A Z I N G!! He is a GREAT. You will be missing a looot if you don't take his classes.
Good, easy professor who doesn't grade tough. Show up to class and talk, you'll get the A.
McKenna is a real human being with a heart worn on his sleeve. I didn't really get the whole thing until after the class was long over. Then I really came to appreciate this amazing man. he is trying to get students to think for themselves, to see beyond the veil. Quite a character and about as down to earth as it gets.
The best you will not regret taking him. He is so passionate about what he teaches and gets the material through to the students. He is the type of person that will get you interested in things you never thought you would ever be in. Just take him the workload is okay, even with more difficult classes
No enough words to express how amazing this man is. He is incredible. I have taken 4 classes with him & planning to take the 5th. He will assign books to read, but is very CLEAR about what he wants in his exams, which are usually a midterm and a final only. One term paper. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. His Classes fill out QUICKLY, register as soon as you can!
hands down the best professor at UMD.
Amazing professor, take his classes and see.
Every professor should be just like him. An amazing professor. It helps students understand and to think outside of the box. No one ever missed a class because we all wanted to learn from him. He has truly inspired me.
McKenna is by far my favorite professor. He wants his students to know about the real world and his lectures are extremely interesting. Do the papers, watch the videos, and study his review and you'll get an A.
In all honesty, McKenna was phenomenal. He made anthropology a delight, and was always open to the opinions of others. While his grading criteria is unclear, he insists his grading only composes of completion. Assignments were graded in the last day of class, meaning no student could improve their grade. Overall, the class was worth it. TAKE HIM!
You learn alot, I can't deny. However, the structure of this course is ridiculous. MT and final are each worth 35%, both are 50 MC Qs, and you get an hour for each exam. I've seen level 400 courses that are more forgiving than this. Also, alot of the stuff he tests you on is stuff he never talked about and isn't in the book. Take another professor.
I learned SO MUCH in this class from Prof. McKenna. I'm a sophomore and have had 400-level classes where I didn't learn nearly as much. Everything on the exams are from lecture, readings, and discussions so just make sure you show up, take good notes, and read. It's not an easy class, but its not hard either. Take him!
This professor assigns readings like everyone has 8 hours to spare every day reading. If you don't mind reading 5-10 hours A DAY then you'll enjoy this class. Oh and he assigns videos and lectures that are also hours long each week. Also for his quizzes and exams, he expects you to remember EXACT quotes from 100 pages of reading from weeks ago.
I had Dr. McKenna for another class and he was great both times. He obviously loves Anthropology and has lots of experience and stories to share. He assigns a reasonable amount of work. His tests are a bit complicated but he curved ours. His emails are a bit bland but he also grades easily on papers. His class was thought-provoking and enjoyable.
His summer medical anthro course was the most engaging online class I've ever had. Great organization and videoed lectures. Consistent communication with the class discussions and with feedback on assignments and he was always available through email.
Took off points on assignments for trivial things like not having the right font or not being double spaced. Asks extremely obscure questions on exams, without giving access to lecture slides. Lots of 'trick' multiple choice questions. I felt like difficulty in this class was artificial and contrived. A good guy but a frustrating professor.
Prof Mckenna's Med Anthropology class was my favorite classes. His 1st exam was not that bad as long as you did the readings and paid attn to the lectures but he did have to curve it due to low scores. His last exam was open-response based but he gave extra credit questions. I'd take it again. Make sure you read!
This class is more difficult than it needs to be. Way too much reading, and grading can be super picky. Do yourself a favor and just take another class.
Hands down my fav professor. I wouldn't consider the class workload heavy but you need to do A LOT of reading. There were 4 assignments, 3 discussions, 3 quizzes, & 2 exams. You couldn't mess up on the assignments or discussions as long as you followed the rubric and answered the questions. Does not accept late work so turn in everything on time.
Professor McKenna makes anthro a delight. His grading can be unclear, but he's fair. Doing the readings, taking notes, and using Unstuck study for practice really helped me ace this class. Would definitely recommend.
Great professor, clearly cares about students and his professional field. I enjoyed the class and learned a lot from it although it's not my area of study. I wish I could take more classes with Dr. McKenna.
