Cool class, but more pop oriented than rock. Good teacher, speaks clearly. Tests are pretty easy, as long as you study a little bit the night before. Also, know how to write 12 bar blues...
He's a very nice and funny guy; kind of nerdy. His class was not very hard at all. Everything on the quizzes were directly given in his lectures.
Kind of a goofy guy, but the class was easy. There's no reason why you shouldn't recieve an A.
Class isn't too interesting, but isn't completely dull either. Devotes too much time to "discussing w/ someone near you." Tests aren't bad, but have good amount of material not covered in class, only in text. Do online discussions right away; he only gives vague deadlines that are usually wrong. Class usually starts late or gets done early.

Cool Dude
Really knows his stuff an cares about what he is teaching. Funny guy, easy class if you try.
Nice guy who loves what he's teaching, and wants his students to be as enthused about the subject matter as he is. Great class.
This class is insanely easy if you know anything about music. He gives test questions on low attendance days and generally wants those who care to succeed. However, too much of the class is "discuss with a neighbor" instead of lecturing, and I had to dumb down my writing for the class. His PC attitude can get annoying sometimes, but not usually.
if you read the book, go to class, an know anything about popular music u should get an A no problemo,
prof. moon was really great and was very understanding about everything. i suggest taking this class for an easy A, the only bad part are the amount of papers, discussions, journals (ahh) assigned. but if you turn everything in and fill out the study guides for the midterm and final you will get an A.
great teacher... kinda lots of work--- 4 papers, 4 quizes, 4 discussions questions, 2 music projects and 2 tests...
I don't know how you can't like him, he's so goofy and he ****es about the same things throughout the semester. If Shana is your TA, the class is 10x better, she's really smart and an overall down to earth person.
easy class. just show up and turn your work in on time :-) You're lucky if you have this class (seriously).
Some might see this class as another Gen Ed, but Prof. Moon actually presents fascinating aspects of jazz history. He genuinely cares about what he teaches, he's funny, he's goofy, and he doesn't tolerate people talking in class or being rude. You'll really only use the text book to study for quizzes/exams, which aren't that hard. Great guy!
The only way that I can describe Professor Moon is delightfully nerdy. The lectures were pretty boring, but he was definitely interested in the subject matter. The assignements were easy, but annoying. He would tell you the date of the upcoming pop quiz if you showed up on a day when attendence was low (usually Thursday).
Prof. Moon is a pretty cool guy. Assignments aren't very tough, but don't count on checking your grade on DL2 because it takes 2 months for him to get through it. Most of the assignments are a waste of time, and there's definitely too much "speak amongst yourselves". Overall the class material is relatively interesting, and class is easy.
This class is really easy and if you like rock music it's pretty interesting. he does take attendance, but the lectures aren't bad and the tests are pretty easy. A really easy Gen Ed arts!!!
This guy is funny, but likes to pick on students. I suggest you don't talk in class or you will be the subject of his joke. Not a class to take if you don't like being in the spotlight, because he picks random people to talk. Otherwise the assignments are pretty easy and so are the tests.
Excellent class/prof! It's clear that he loves and is very knowledgeable about the subject. Go to class and do the readings and you'll easily get an A. Lectures are worth going to, they can be very fun!
This class is really interesting, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Moon certainly has a passion for music, and he knows a great deal about it. He isn't so great with technology, but his bumbling mannerisms and pure excitement over new technological discoveries are endearing. If you do the assignments and attend class, you will do well.
Loved this class. The topic is so interesting and professor Moon makes it even more interesting. He is a jerk to people who talk and goof off in his class, but it works because it makes it easier to focus. Don't talk, and you'll love this class. assignments are super easy.
EASY EASY EASY class. I ended the class with over a 100%. The only way this class can be hard is if you are an athlete and you don't put any effort(you guys know who you are lol) and expect tests to be cake. Overall, fun interesting stuff, and if you know music, then you know this class.
This was a fun class and he is very enthusiastic about what he teaches. He got to know each of us really well and he was fun to have conversations with about music. As an honors class this was still an easy A and the final was awesome, we had a team game-show 'final'. I would highly recommend this class.
Post below this one nails it. He's very nice, willing to work with students. Funnest class I've had at U of A. I looked forward to his classes and got to know fellow students pretty well. Class discussions were very fun.
Professor Moon is awesome! He is genuinely interested in what he teaches and gets to know his students well. We had a cool project to write our own group songs and the tests are a breeze (group essay questions :D) I would recommend this class to everyone!
A really good and creative music teacher. His skill comes in letting his students reach their own conclusions about music. He grades fair too!
Dr. Moon is one of the best teachers at U of A, PERIOD. He is an excellent lecturer and is genuinely enthusiastic about what he is teaching. The assignments are a joke and are grading very leniently. The midterm can be tricky but the Final is very easy. I would love to take another one of his classes. TAKE THIS CLASS. EASY A AND GREAT PROFESSOR.
Dr. Moon has been my favorite professor at the U of A so far, hands down. He's easy enough to pay attention to, even easier to get along with, and his assignments are even EASIER. I do recommend studying for the midterm and the final, but this class isn't something you'll stress out over if you go to lecture.
Very nice guy, he basically wants you to pass the class. As long as you do the work you'll get a good grade on it. He honestly tries to remember everybodys name. Don't surf the web in his class, show up, and do your work and you'll come out with an easy A.
Easiest class at the U of A. Im currently taking it online right now and it is hard to get lower then A. As long as you do all the hw and readings you will recieve an A. The class is actually fun and you get to listen music that you enjoy. I really recommend taking this class.
This is by far the easiest class I have ever taken, and perhaps the easiest I will ever take. The lectures were fun and simple, and the time flew by. Sometimes Mr. Moon would go off on tangents that barely made any sense, but his tests are so simple and the only way you could possibly get lower than an A is if you don't show up to class.
Ask him about the time he "jamped" over the bench in 6th grade.
Like most people here said. He is a good professor. He wants you to do well if you try. He is interested in what he teaches and tries to make it interesting to learn about. He will try to get to know you, especially if you are in his discussion section. I was and he knew my name and was always really nice. Overall good for an art or diversity req.
This is a good class, but spend time studying for the midterm and final. The D2L quizzes were easy. There is a group presentation that you have to give towards the end of the semester that I really didn't care for. Easy B; study and make it an easy A.
Moon is very passionate about the material he teaches. He is very understanding and makes the lectures interesting. I really enjoyed his class. Very easy B and an easy A if you put a little effort in.
This is a really great and interesting class. It definitely surpasses a majority of gen eds that are available! Professor Moon is really passionate and it shows. Lectures are always interesting and the work load is reasonable. Definitely highly recommend this course!
Professor Moon is fantastic. There are two big projects, make your own song and then an open ended one at the end, that seem like a big deal. Both are super easy. The online quizzes are easy. The tests are easy. The listening quizzes are easy. It's all easy.
Great guy and good professor, highly recommend this class. It's relevant and he makes the whole experience fun!
Professor Moon is a great guy. Really helpful, and the class was pretty interesting. Satisfies an art credit too. Definitely recommend this class
Great teacher. He is more interested in actually teaching you and sharing his life experiences, rather than testing and quizzing and all that. Super easy class, and really interesting.
I would shot the moon for Moon. BEST CLASS IN TUCSON. Hip Hop, Rock, whatever music you like, Moon will discuss it. Tests are easy and his book is free online. Almost everyone gets an A. Don't need to take notes or buy a textbook. It was like Woodstock w/o the "you know what."
GREAT CLASS! Discussions are mandatory, lectures are not. But I loved going to his lectures. If you do not plan on attending class do not sign up for this class, you will be wasting a spot for someone who can attend and enjoy it. Such a fun semester I wish I would take it again.
The class is very easy. I did not have much interest in the material so I had a little trouble getting the facts stuck in my brain for exams. Still the exams are very easy, and he gives you the essay questions before the actual exam. And HEY, how often do you listen to the Beatles, Michael Jackson, The Who, Black Eyed Peas, and many more in class??
He obviously doesn't care about his students at all. A general theme of apathy was prominent in the class. Often, he never told the TAs what to teach in the discussion section, so there was little to make us interested in music. It was easy enough, but he is very picky with the most minor of details in the hw.
Quite simply, when Doctor Moon lectures it is informative and fun. You will learn a lot from him, either one on one or through his lectures. If he has you do a Local Artist Project, though, the class becomes much too heavy on the workload and much less beneficial. Do not recommend this class if Doctor Moon is doing a Local Artist Project.
I love Professor Moon! He's super chill & loves talking to his students. The class material got bland sometimes, but he always made it entertaining. Easy A. Would definitely recommend.
Moon is amazing. He is very entertaining and you can see that he is passionate about music and knows a lot. He grades very easy and if you take the chapter tests that are given with the online book and know the terms for every chapter you will succeed on his tests. He is very helpful if you go in and talk to him. Great class that is always fun!
Professor Moon typically uses profanity in his lectures, and has sensual images in his Power-Point lectures; do not take if you are a Mormon, Christian, etc. He doesn't put lectures or notes online to study, does not answer emails, does not allow questions during lectures, and his instructions for homework assignments are unclear and error prone.
Dr. Moon is fantastic! His class is informative & interesting, & the class discussions are thought-provoking. Someone commented that they were upset because the HONORS class wasn't an easy A. That's just dumb. Also, he does NOT use profanity or sensual images (other than playing clips from popular music). I am Christian & wasn't offended AT ALL.
He's a really cool guy, laid back and pretty funny. He honestly inspired me. I really have never genuinely "enjoyed" a class before this. Super cool you basically get to jam to music and learn about the artists you already love as a lecture. Easy grader. Fun assignments. Can't say enough! Would absolutely take again!!
His tests cover a huge amount of information and he isn't specific about what he wants. Everyone I know did extremely poorly on the midterm and there is only the midterm and the final. He asks a lot of students in terms of projects and time spent on the class. Worst class I've taken in college so far.
I have never rated a professor because i am lazy but rating Professor Moon says something. This was definitely one of the worst classes i have ever taken. He is extremely unclear on what will be on the test. The midterm was extremely hard and most everyone got a C. He assigns "busy work" projects every few weeks and rarely responds to emails.
This was a great and fun class. It covers all genres of music, granted I didn't learn much but still liked the structure of the course. He isn't really sympathetic if you have tech problems with attendance, but still fun nonetheless.
This class was easy but really tedious. There's a lot of busy, boring work. Follow the course schedule because, if you wait until the due date, you will be spending 6 hours doing work. So work daily. It was easy to earn full credit. Warning: Moon takes a while to reply to emails most times.
The class itself isn't too difficult, but the work load is pretty heavy. There are a ton of projects and busy work. The information you get in lecture is the same as you'll read in the book, but there are clicker quizzes and questions you must do for participation credit. Very passionate about music and knows it well! Lectures are very interesting.
At first glance this looks like one of the easiest gen eds you'll ever take. However, he never posts his lectures online to look at later and theres no way to prepare for the midterm and final. Also he assigns a ton of projects that are extremely tedious, and he'll grade them extremely harshly even when you fulfill all of the project requirements.
The class itself starts out ok and starts to get decent toward the end but, not the professor. If you talk during his lectures he will call you out and ask you to move in front of the whole class. He does let you do other work in the class. All the assignments are basically due in the same week. Midterm is easy, Final was hard. Projects are tedious
Do not take this class. He is a useless professor who does not carr about the well being and education of his students. He also is un available for contact out of class and I am pretty sure cant use a computer. Also, he will write you up for "plagiarism" if it is less than 10% un-cited. Looking for an easy class that is useful to you? NOT THIS ONE
Be prepared to have no idea how the class is structured, and have friday discussions with grad students who treat you like you are 12. Also, professor moon is the classic mono-tone boring and unprofessional professor at the UA
Prof. Moon is probably the worst professor I've had so far. Personally, he isn't a bad guy, but this class is terrible. Lectures aren't put online, your notes won't help you much because of how fast he talks. Projects are tedious and irrelevant. The subject matter on the midterm and final can be anything.
As some of these reviews from a few years ago seem like this teacher is great, times have changed. No reviews for the test unless you have a TA as your discussion teacher. I had Mr. Moon as the disccusion teacher and it was awful. I emailed him a dozen times and got zero responses. As cool as the content may have been his teaching style is awful
Hes a nice guy but I have to give him a 1 because of his REALLY stupid assignments. He even made us MAKE OUR OWN SONG (had to make our own beat and sing as well) FOR A HISTORY CLASS. Sorry but I dont have time to learn how to use some music making program that I WILL NEVER USE EVER AGAIN. Dumbest assignment I have ever had in college.
He was not too bad as a prof but he gave ridiculous assignments that do not help you learn anything at all. We were required to write our own song and record a song which allowed creativity but also was so unnecessary for the class. Talked about race issues which was good
Professor Moon is a great professor who made what could've been a very mundane music history class very interesting and interactive. His main assignments are listening journals that you compile over the course of several weeks and they take time, but they're not difficult. He's very knowledgeable and a super nice guy. Would highly recommend.
Dr. Moon teaches a comprehensive Music Appreciation class. I took this class with the expectation of listening to a wide variety of music and learning more about different artists. While this class encompassed some of that, it was also filled with course lectures on cultural appropriation, institutional racism, and other liberal values.
He takes AGES to respond to emails if he even answers at all. There were countless errors in assignments, quizzes and tutorials that resulted in incorrect grades. He wasnt very clear with assignment descriptions or what was expected of us in the class. There were also grade descrepincies among students that were never explained.
His class is extremely tedious and he is very unresponsive through email. His assignments are not clear and explained extremely poorly. He treats this class like it's the only one you'll have this semester. His quizzes are really long also. I totally regret taking this course.
he assigns way too much work and it is all so tedious it just gets annoying.
Dr. Moon is one of the best professors Ive ever had. He genuinely cares about his students and hes always asking about the best ways he can help his students to learn. There is lots of homework but I personally wouldnt change that because the work is not difficul. Hes really helpful and I learned so much in his class. I recommend him as a prof!
I took Dr. MOON'S class on Frank Sinatra and the Music history in his lifetime. There is a lot of work, but it was mostly fun. I learned a lot. It was one of my favorite classes ever! I learned a lot about Sinatra and the times un which he lived. I enjoyed the music so much!
For an entry level, online class, this class has FAR too much crammed into it. The entire feels impossibly rushed, with far too many things to do with not enough time. If you're cool with scrambling to get work done, even in a week, and salty emails bc you're not meeting his standard, I recommend. Otherwise, don't take this class.
I took Professor Moon's online Music 109 class, it was by far the most tedious course I took this semester. This class is a ridiculous amount of work. Unless you want to be doing hours of pointless busy work every week I would very strongly recommend not to take this course. The professor is also hard to reach. This class is not worth taking!
Well you've gotta give it to him for being so passionate about what he's teaching. If Professor Moon could survive on a diet of only music, I am positive that he would. The only reason I wouldn't recommend the class is because of the heavy work load for a gen ed. Sometimes he breaks out into song and I live for it.
Took this online & was expecting to learn about the history of rock & roll, but its really focused on pop music & cultural appropriation which was pretty annoying. LOTS of tedious (but easy) homework assignments & you have to record your own song at the end of the semester. Not the worst class Ive ever taken but definitely not the best.
The professor himself is great, very nice and passionate about what he does. But the class requires a ridiculous amount of work, so much work, I cannot explain how much busy work this class requires. Also if you don't have a 'musical' background it makes the class that much more difficult and tedious.
There was no grading rubric/clear schedule. Professor Moon takes up to a week to answer emails, if at all. More of a music theory class than music history. Many of his "sources" for information direct you to Wikipedia as the information is not in the book. Easy pass but loads of busy work with unclear instructions.
There is a ridiculous amount of busywork and he doesn't give a lot of time to complete it. The class also requires you to write and record a song by the end of it even though it's supposed to be a music history class. All of the work is useless, tedious, and it doesn't teach anything. He treats the class as if it's the only one you're taking.
He means well but he is unorganized with his grading. I had to double check with him multiple times in order to fix assignment grades. His TA's grade tougher than he does on the journals. There is a lot A LOT of journal writes, discussion posts, and you have to read the book he wrote a long with listening to a lecture-about that same section.
Prof Moon is super sweet and understanding. If you email him/his TAs about late work or really anything, they are so nice about it. However, there is a LOT of work you have to do for this class, including writing/recording your own song. I actually learned a lot in this class though and there were a lot of interesting units! He is a very caring guy
This guy sucks don't take this if you are not a music major. You are expected to write your own songs. There is also an insane amount of work, this class was much harder than my major classes.
Moon is a good guy who cares and is passionate about music.
Took Mus109 as a seven week course and it was so fast and heavy on homework but it was super easy work. Good gen ed to take to get out of the way.
Prof. Moon was pretty uninvolved, mostly because he had just had a new baby, but this class was super chill. There's a 3-4 hour assignment once every 5 days. Not bad. The assignments are actually really interesting. The extra projects are pretty challenging. If you procrastinate, he constantly encourages you to participate. Otherwise he's chill.
This class has got to be one the most busywork heavy classes that I've ever taken. The format of the class is all over the place. too specific on responding to classmates post (post a video, reply to 5 people) The work may be easy(ish) but the amount, especially in a 5 week course is insane. I took the class cause I liked Sinatra, after?not so much
Possibly my favorite class I've taken at the UofA. Easy to get an A if you do all the work, and Dr. Moon is very forgiving about due dates. He is extremely helpful and caring about his students, learning all their names and respecting everybody's needs. I would definitely take another class taught by Dr. Moon. Loved this experience.
This was a very interesting class, this coming from someone who is not normally super interested in music. It was a self-paced class during the week, with modules due at the end of each week. THERE ARE NO EXAMS OR TESTS!!! This was the biggest draw for me personally, but there is a lot of writing involved each week and analysis involved.
I can't say much about Dr.Moon as the TAs run the class however I would not recommend taking this class. It's an easy A if you do all the work however it is an UNREASONABLE amount of work and extremely tedious to complete. The grading criteria is clear but overly strict and detailed. This class is TIME CONSUMING. The material is alright.Don't take.
He was a very fair instructor. The class itself had a lot of work but if you did them decently you got an A. I advise doing as much as you can ahead of time so that you don't stress last minute because you can't do it last minute. I learned a lot and liked how we could learn about our own music artists along with assigned ones. This class was fun.
Don't listen to the other reviews. I didn't love the class material but it was manageable and an easy A.About 20 minutes of homework per class day and it is super easy. Class is easy to not pay attention but he does call on people randomly. Yes, you have to write your own song but by no means does it have to be good.
Way too much work for a gen ed. there's a couple of projects that are extremely time consuming and even though he acts like you get credit for basically putting in effort to do the work, he's a tough grader. he's kinda everywhere and nothing in the class is really organized which causes work to be piled up. Don't take unless you're a music major.
SO MUCH WORK FOR A GEN ED...... He grades hard too. If you are not passionate about music dont take this class. Expected to always be in class, lots of hw, assignments and more stupid stuff. Try to avoid if possible
SO MUCH WORK!!! I took this class because based on the title it sounded interesting and I needed an art credit. But it was AWFUL!!!! So much work for a Gen Ed!!!!!! Easily the most work out of all of my classes, and it was online. He was also such a strict grader!! WAY TOO MUCH WORK! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
I was not expecting this huge amount of workload for a 7 week online class. There is a lot of assignments plus projects that are expected to turned in on time. He is also awful with responding to emails and discussion messages; it took him 2 weeks to send a response that could take 5 seconds.
Stay away... awful teacher and does not care about his students, only himself. Loves to hear himself talk and often ignores relevant student questions.
Discussion posts are expected to be 6-7 paragraphs long, with several uses of direct quotes from the readings. 6-7 paragraphs are a full paper, not a discussion post. The work in this class is way too much for what you're learning, and I believe dampens the actual learning of the material.
Moon was not clear about assignments AT ALL. We had multiple assignments due one day but he wouldn't post it on D2L until weeks later. This was a beginner course and Moon rushed through chord theory and the circle of fifths and expected students to write their own scores of music. His feedback was generalized and unhelpful during class.
doesn't respond to his emails at all, so if you have a question you are out of luck. Very hard grader even though it's a music class. don't take!!!!! caused me so much stress and it should have been my easiest class.
Dr. Moon did not update D2L often. An assignment would be due, but you would be unable to turn it in. The work was based on your experience, so it was not that difficult. If you are a beginner, it is hard to understand the music theory and how to use MuseScore. Dr. Moon is nice and understanding, but he is always behind.
Nice guy with lots of personality but a bit of a scatterbrain. Doesn't grade very fast. Small assignments/discussions + journals. Lecture heavy. Very easy. Good intro to music. If you aren't interested in music, you will feel extremely bored and unstimulated.
He was a fine professor. You could miss 80% of the mon/wed/fri classes and get an A. I will just say his class taught me nothing and it was boring to go to. I never wanted to go to class because it was so repetitive. He barely taught any theory and guitar, which you need to know for the final project. He is terrible at assignments and due dates
Brian was nice and always stuck around after class for questions. The lectures were incredibly boring and had nothing to do with any graded assignments, yet attendance was mandatory. The assignment instructions were often very vague and needed clarification. Although there were a lot of projects and assignments, they were pretty easy.
Dr Moon is a nice guy who obviously cares about his job! Lecture heavy. If you are interested in the history of music, I think it is a good class! If you are not, however, you will be bored out of your mind. Nevertheless, it was an easy class to pass and did have some fun projects. Dr Moon can be a little disorganized but is a respectable guy.
Tough grader, lots of work even for a gen ed. Use Unstuck AI and study group to get through assignments. Engaging lectures, but response time on emails can be slow.
The workload was a lot especially for a 100 class. Also he took so much time to grade anything that I didn't get any feedback until my grade was already final.
Class was pretty easy and the projects were also simple to complete. Weekly, we would have a short discussion post that took about 10 minutes to complete. Very lecture heavy and got very boring quickly. It's not a bad class to take because of how easy it is but attendance becomes annoying. Lectures become very repetitive.
He is really nice, chill and smart
Very heavy workload, especially for a class marketed as intro-friendly. Picky grader, but the criteria are clear. I took this as a five-week course and definitely would not recommend if you are planning on enrolling in others as well.
The Sinatra class was amazing! There was a lot of homework, BUT! I had a 5-week class (instead of 12 weeks), so the homework amount was reasonable for such a short period. Most of the homework was relatively easy and interesting. This class made me fall in love with Sinatra. The professor is really nice, and when I needed help, he was always there.
Just make sure you do the homework and your fine, he doesn't post it in the main d2l calendar so make sure you go to assignments and look. Lectures are overall solid some of them can be pretty boring, you can show up half way through class as long as your there at the end to take attendance you're fine.
Nice guy, but not organized. Sometimes there is no work and sometimes there is a bunch of busy work that doesn't really help the class. Doesn't grade work for months, but at least is gracious about it. But overall tries his best to share his love for music despite his messiness.
If you have a shallow taste in music and aren't really open to new things, don't take this class. If you are open to various genres of music, this class is super interesting. Lectures every day, which got boring after a while. Don't expect him to answer your email. No exams, but there are 3 journals which are unnecessarily long and tedious to write
If you need an artist gen ed requirement and want to pad your GPA, do NOT take a class with Brian Moon. Not an easy A at all. If you miss more than 15% of class, you cannot get an A. If you don't learn how to write sheet music, you will likely not get an A. His lectures were super boring and you only get to play guitar once a week in class.
