I have to say I have learned more about Calc 1 with him than the anyone else. He is clear on what is important to know and likes to use real life examples. For anyone who has had trouble with calc before he is a great teacher, one of the best at ucf! He makes the class interesting and is passionate about his work.
He is a good teacher
He is an amazing teacher. although calc is a very hard class, he keeps class very entertaining and i really enjoyed calculus and actually wanted to come to class everyday.
This teacher was really good. Even though he was extremely hard, I loved taking his class. I had never taken a calculus class before in my life, and now I feel like I know everything about Calc 1. He gives 4 tests and 1 quiz per week. Also hw. Great teacher! I am taking him now for Calc 2.
Not a good Graduate Professor. Poor knowledge of advanced subjects. Inappropriate comments to students in class - including myself.
Great Teacher, Hilarious, Always there for you. Tests are challenging but if you study you will do fine. I ended up with a solid B in Calc 1 with him and now have the same grade in Calc 2.
Dr. Moore is the best calc teacher. His tests are challenging, but you learn a lot. Halfway through class he does storytime, which is usually hilarious, so you can get through the class without falling asleep. Do your pancakes (homework problems) and you should be able to get a B.
Dr. Moore is the best! If you do all the assigned homework problems you will do good! Plus he gives extra as well. Make sure you attend class and stay on top of the homework because he does give weekly quizzes to add points to your grade! Awesome guy!
Great teacher! Quizes are regular, so do the assigned homework and you should be fine. The tests are pretty difficult, and require you to do some work, but it pays off. It is obvious that it is important to this prof that his kids learn something from him (and I have learned so much).
As he said on the first day of class, his 'easiness' rating on here is fairly low. Dr. Moore will make you work hard for the grade you want but you learn so many more applications of DE's than other classes. Gave a VERY difficult final b/c it was take home but definitely did some sort of curve with grades at the end. Highly recommended.
Easily the best professor at UCF I have EVER had. He's a master of the material, and a master of relaying it to you. Quizzes are weekly, but just do the homework and you're fine. Tests are tough but fair, and he's willing to reason with the class. He's extremely funny, which helps keep the class at an easy-going pace. If you can get him, take him!
Great proff if you can take him. Wish he taught all of my classes.
He talks in such a monotone voice so it's very hard to pay attention throughout the whole class. Many times when giving examples he would mess up his own problem, making me question if I want to trust everything he says.
he has a dry sense of humor. He will mess up on his own problems so it's hard to trust what he says. Also, if you show up to class it all appears really easy and simple, esp if you took ap calc, (i had him for calc1) but his test are killer and you have to study for them. he also tells a story every class or reads a poem. its wonderful. :)
Dr.Moore, the best professor at UCF easy. He is a master of mathematics and very funny as well. Story time is great (tandem essays lol). But, do you HW because the test are not easy.
Don't listen to the people who says he messes up problems! First of all nobody is perfect all the time, he makes a mistake once in a blue moon and fixes it! He is really good at explaining things and his story times are really nice in the middle of class, you will laugh. EAT YOUR PANCAKES!
Dr. Moore was an extremely clear, helpful and interesting professor. Always managed to balance the class on learning the material but keeping things light hearted. The tests were difficult, as were the quizzes. But there are no tricks. Do the homework and put in the time when studying and you will pass. Would definitely take him again.
His lectures can get a little boring--but he always spices it up with story time! The tests are fair. If you do well on the skills tests, and the homework, the tests shouldn't be ridiculously hard. He has a review day and goes over exactly what kind of questions will be on the test. Take him, and make good use of the TAs!
Great teacher. I really like his teaching style. He likes to pause lecture to tell a funny story or remark. In all, you can get a lot out of his lectures if you choose to go. But although there is attendance taken randomly once a week you can learn this yourself without going to lecture as well as long as you keep up with the homework.
One of the best math teachers I've ever had. He is extremely passionate about math and it shows. As others have noted, story time is entertaining and a great way to give students a little brain break. Review sessions basically cover one of every type of problem that you'll see on the tests, so at the very least go to those.
His lectures are very clear. He goes through definitions and then works through examples. He, however, is VERY helpful with his exam reviews because he works through a harder version of each type of question that will be shown on the test. IF you understand how to do that, then you're golden.
He's an average professor. Wouldn't recommend him but don't drop his class if you get him. He uses the iClicker to take attendance. Attendance is also taken in the labs. So basically 10% of your grade is 5 days/week attendance. The skills tests are computer-graded and are not multiple choice. Easy if you've had experience with calculus.
Typical UCF Math class, all HW is online, iClicker attendance, he is very flexible with grading and drops lowest test grade, responds quickly to emails. Average Teacher
He's got a dry, geeky, dorky sense of humor. But that's not a bad thing in my book. His typical in class problem examples involve comically random objects: "A burrito is moving upwards vertically w/ velocity..." He keeps the class lighthearted, which makes learning so much easier.
I did not love him. I am a major math nerd and never once received less than an A in any math course in my life, yet I got a D in his class. My answers would be right, but would still fail because I didn't use HIS method. He was funny in an awkward sort of way but didn't really explain much. I would not recommend him.
Dr. Moore's class is one of the best math classes I have ever taken. He does get side tracked sometimes, and skips a few things, but those are usually things you should already know. Overall, if you actually put in some effort into the class, and read your book, you will get an easy A!
He is a really cool and funny guy, but he skips a lot of material that is important for understanting how to do the problems.
He. Is. AWESOME! If you take any other professor, take this guy. Calculus is hard boo-hoo. If you're not ready to roll too bad. For the rest of you, take the class by the balls and tell it where you're headed. You're gonna have to do the things you don't want. Study and go to discussion. That aside he's a real cool guy and is willing to help.
Dr. Moore is a really good professor. His tests are hard, but all Calculus 1 tests are the same at UCF so you'll have the same test no matter which professor you take. Dr. Moore is very helpful and always willing to answer any questions that you have. He is better than a lot of the calc professors because he is american and you can understand him.
Dr Moore was a wonderful professor, his explanations were clear, doing the online HW made class easier. Gave stories every class that helped keep you awake and motivated.
Very good professor. Exams are brutally tough, but fair. He is approachable and probably THE most helpful of anyone I've ever had. If you go to him with a question on the homework or a project, he will tell you EXACTLY what to do so that you get a perfect score.
Very good professor. Takes the time to go over each topic thoroughly. Mixes lectures with funny stories to keep everyone engaged.
Ugh. This class sucked. That being said, calculus wasn't going to be easy to begin with. But Moore wasn't helpful, he would skip steps and we would only get through so many problems in class because of it. The stories he told, were sometimes funny but took 10-15 minutes out of each class. Tests are tough, especially the final!! Got a C, im happy!
Hilarious and hope to be able to take him again. His lectures were thorough and concise but the written exams were a bit difficult but definitely passable
If you take Calculus 1 and have no prior experience with Calculus 1 at all, you might have a tough time trying to understand different concepts with this professor. He doesn't necessarily tell you when he is proving theorems or when he is working a problem when the theorem is necessary. Despite this, he will tell funny stories during class.
Calculus 1 is already tough and it doesn't help that he doesn't clarify and teach more of certain concepts. If you have no experience with calculus then it will be extremely hard, but you'll get by if you've taken it before.
He was a great professor, but first time calculus students will probably find his lectures tough and have to supplement them with the textbook (I still did even after getting a 5 on AP Calc AB). He's very approachable and kind, and tells funny stories in class. Definitely have to work for a good grade.
This class was definitely the bane of my semester. You have to put in a lot in order to gain a lot from this class. Calc is hard is general, but the class didn't really flow like it should. Definitely ask questions if you have them and go get extra help from him or the TAs. He also gives some questions in the back of the book that help a lot.
If you don't have a good previous knowledge of Calculus, don't take the class. He expects you to know almost everything and goes on a tangent on almost every class talking about what to do with a math degree or that stem majors this or that or reads poems and stories.
He's very enthusiastic and engaging, and loves poems
I wouldn't take this class if I didn't need to. All he does is talk about things that don't matter. His notes are unorganized. He grades tests very detailed. The homework is long but sometimes helpful. He's very nice but I feel like there are just some people who are not meant for teaching and he is one of them.
Really hated this guy. Calc 1 is hard as it is, but he somehow makes it harder for the rest of us. Very unorganized and unprofessional, skips over important material from the book, and his tests are near impossible. If it wasn't for one TA I have, I would have dropped the class by now. I've spent hours over this class. Avoid this guy if you can.
Like others have said, Dr. Moore is a really awesome guy and really funny. Unfortunately when you are given a homework you walk into it absolutely clueless. He covers nothing in lecture that you'll need to do the homework. My only options were Khan academy and mathway in hopes that I might figure out what it is you even have to do for each HW.
He tries well, but can be tough to understand where he is going sometimes. The first test will be rough but the remaining test should feel easier. Often homework is unrelated to test questions. He sometimes goes off on tangents where you might not know where they are going. Course is 76% test scores. Learn material on your own, it will help.
He does not spoon feed you and makes sure that you understand everything conceptually (the "why") rather than just the how in order to get the answer. If you want to learn calculus and not just apply it, take him. Highly recommend for more math oriented majors, not if you are a more life science major who just needs to take calc as a requirement.
Having taken Calc 1 prior to coming to UCF I found that I understood a lot of the topics Dr. Moore covered, he explains things in a manner that is helpful to better understand the topic if you already have base knowledge about it but it's not good if you haven't learned it before. Unless you have previous calculus experience, I would not recommend.
Brian, oh Brian. I thought I was prepared taking calc because I did so well in Pre-Calc but I thought wrong. The test average were usually around 55-60%. It is a very sketchy class because if you fail every exam but pass the final with a 90, you will get a 90 in the class! If you are daring, take this class
The lectures were very long and packed, but he found a way to make the class less boring (reading short stories and poems), and we still had some time to review before the final. Don't be afraid to ask questions because he is always willing to answer and wants to make sure everyone is doing well in the course. Most of the homework is online.
I would say professor Moore is kind of underrated. It is true that the way he teaches can be rough at times but this is because hes trying to teach the subject at a deeper level which I liked. He didnt want to teach us how of the concepts but the why as well. His tests are hard and I wouldnt recommend studying just for the tests.
Was a struggle to pass, lectures are terrible can't decipher his handwriting and always goes off on tangents completely unrelated to calc. Doesn't care about students and doesn't teach. Taught the class to myself practically. Do not recommend.
AMAZING. Such a great feedback. You have to work for your grade, just like for other professors, but he is amazing. Explains clearly. Post notes. Curves grades. HE WANTS YOU TO PASS!!!
Challenging, personable, and loads of fun. I took Calc in high school, but I was shocked at how much my understanding deepened as a result of Dr. Moore. He cares deeply about the students & wants you to learn as well as pass. Tests are difficult but grading is generous. Take notes, do the homework, and do the review problems before the tests.
This class was not easy at all. Dr. Moore is a very smart person, but it is difficult to understand what he is explaining at times. I had taken Calculus in high school and passed the AP exam with a 3, but did not pass this course.
Passed Calc in highschool, expected this class to be a breeze. Sorely mistaken. He operates on what he calls "Deeper Understanding" which means on tests you should be able to figure out types of problems that you've never seen before based on what you've done in the past. The man knows his math, but doesn't know how to teach.
I'm awful at math, but Dr. Moore will explain concepts until I understand. He's very dedicated to getting through to his students, you just need to put in the effort (to either ask in class or go to office hours to practice problems). Do ALL the homework/reviews and you'll get A's on quizzes + high grades on tests. Loved him as a prof! Good person.
Dr. Moore is brilliant, and taking him for PDE was a great decision considering his doctoral work is in PDEs. The class is tough, but do your work and you'll be fine. If you're paying attention in class and putting your time in outside of class it's impossible to fail.
Dr. Moore's class was one of my greatest experiences at UCF. I had him for Calc 1 and 2. Both classes I found extremely difficult. His grading is harder than any other calc professor to my knowledge. I wouldn't take him if you want to ensure an A. But if you really want to learn the material, Dr. Moore will teach it to you.
Professor Moore is a great guy. He loves what he teaches, and really cares about his students. His tests are much more difficult than his homework or quizzes, and he always tests based on questions that you've never seen before, which meant most of the class failed. Don't miss lectures, the textbook is hard to understand and he does not post notes.
Teaching style is very disorganized. In a 110 minute class, spends about 20 minutes doing practice problems and another 90 minutes going on tangents about things that aren't even tested. Also loves to assign homework problems that have never been taught in class. Tends to make mistakes in his work and relies on students to catch them for him.
Never felt the need to write a negative review about a professor until now. Like the person below me said, the class is 110 minutes, but most of the time is wasted. He spends most of class off topic and rambles about random stuff. If you're lucky, he'll do three example problems for you. Tests are also vastly different from review.
I've loved math from the time I was in 1st grade to the time that I was in calc 2. 10 weeks into taking this class w/ this prof, math is now my least favorite subject. Lectures make no sense and he will assign homework problems that you've never seen before in class. Makes the class much harder than it needs to be. Take any other professor but him!
Terrible teacher. Goes off topic far too much and explains concepts in a confusing manner. I learn more from watching a 10 minute YouTube video than I do in a two hour lecture. I should have just taken this class online if I was just gonna teach myself from watching videos...
Loves to talk, but the things that come out of his mouth are of very little value. Even though he rambles for almost the entire class, I learn nothing from the lecture. Like the person below me said, I can just watch a youtube video and learn more in 15 minutes than I do in a 110 minute lecture.
Do yourself a huge favor and take another professor for calculus. Doesnt teach whatsoever, and will assign homework problems that were never discussed in class. If possible, avoid him
Got an A in the class, but my love for math was ruined in the process. Because of this prof, Im never going to take a math class again. He made the class unnecessarily stressful and forced you to teach yourself. In his lectures, dont expect to learn too much
Lectures were not helpful unless you studied the material before in preparation. However, he was a fair grader and did not grade tests very harshly. If you are good at learning material on your own you should be all right. However, don't get me wrong the class takes a time commitment.
I do see a lot of people knocking on his lectures and while I agree that he did ramble sometimes about non-calculus-related things, his lectures were nowhere near horrible. If you ask him something you don't understand he'll gladly answer. FO my class he gave us options on the format of grading and helped us all out. You can tell he really cares.
Very helpful and nice person. Thoroughly teaches material. I managed to learn everything well just by paying attention in lecture I didn't read the textbook. Homeworks weren't bad and exams were not too hard, he grades fairly.
I'm really not sure why Dr. Moore's rating is so low. He is engaging, fun, personable, and so so good at explaining the concepts of the course. His exams follow what we learn in class and are aided by the homework. He really cares about his students and wants them to learn above all else. If you're taking Calc 3, take it with Dr. Moore
Dr. Moore is a great guy. He is excellent at going over the material and explaining it. The final is a project and he is willing to help you with anything and will even set up private meetings outside office hours. I didn't do so well for personal reasons but I would definitely take him again if given the opportunity.
I feared taking Dr. Moore because of how low his ratings are, but others convinced me to and I'm so glad they did. He is a humble, kind, and amazing person; he makes sure everyone understands, was flexible with grading and due dates, seemed to look for ways to give more credit (I was awed by where he gave me points on tests), and so much more.10/10
Dr. Moore is an amazing professor. He really cares about all of his students, and will definitely meet you where you are. Very generous with partial credit. Weekly homework isn't too bad, just stay on top of it. Technically don't need textbook, but definitely good to have (same from calc 2). Because of him, I changed to a mathematics major!
Dr. Moores the type of professor that genuinely cares about student understanding. Hes extremely kind and forgiving, and although he makes small errors here and there, you will learn a lot more than just math if you take this class. Tests are fair; he does excellent review classes before the exams. Ask questions and go to class if you want an A
i personally found my calc 3 experience to be really challenging. i don't think he's a bad professor; it was mainly on me and my circumstances. his new grading scale is a bit weird but he makes you work for your grade and wants you to truly understand everything that is learned in the course so be aware that this class is definitely not an easy a!
Never mind the atrocious grading scale... Hours go by in lecture and we do MAYBE one example. Useless to even attend. Tested weekly (not quizzed... all towards final). WILL make snarky comments when you don't understand. "Didn't I already do that problem?" "When can we get to the new stuff?" Better to never attend lecture. Just take the tests.
He cares a lot about his students and really wants you to understand the material, however, he isn't the best lecturer. I had to put a lot of time into the class going to office hours and retaking tests. At the end of the day, he's not great at teaching but he wants to help you learn.
Dr. Moore is an extremely kind professor who genuinley cares about his students. He will talk with you and work with you to help get you the grade you want and the knowledge you want. Put some effort in, and you will walk away happy.
The tests are usually very difficult, and often don't resemble the HW or textbook problems. His lectures are bordering on useless because he is a researcher first and foremost. All answers must be explained to the extent that he BELIEVES that you understand the material, correct answers don't earn credit without this. Nice guy though.
Very good person, but his teaching methods are subpar, his tests on occasion nothing like the homework or textbooks, be ready to teach yourself.
Took him for Logic and Proofs, was one of the best Math Professors I've had as a math major. He's definitely a professor who works with you, and not against you. He tries to take off as little points as possible from tests, and gives genuine feedback. Idk about the rest, but for our class, his tests were extremely similar to questions from the book
I switched out of this class when the Calc Power Up was given as an option, but I would take this professor again. He was willing to work with students and he had good lectures. Recitations were mandatory and my TA wasn't the best. Recitations are run by TA's. He posts online lectures which are a must to watch. Exams are HARD, but he tries to prep
This class was not easy. He is a great professor and you can tell he really cares about the class, but be mindful of the TA you take for your recitation. They all grade differently and some grade very heavily. As long as you put the work into the class you can pass, but be prepared to study all of the time, just to fail the tests.
Amazing professor for such a hard course. You can tell he really cares about students and wants them to pass. Had multiple medical emergencies that led me to get a NC grade but Professor Moore still had hope I would pass. Will be taking him again.
Brian Moore is enthusiastic with the subject however doesn't teach well enough to compensate for the difficulty of his class. Exams are always on topics which weren't described well in lectures or even relative to the homework assigned. If you want to pass you should probably just self study because he is no help.
Professor Moore is kind and wants you to pass. Tests are difficult even with so much studying. Make sure you get all of the easy points!! Points grading system not percentage. A curve is built into the points system but no other curves and no drops. One extra credit. Very much a teach yourself course but you can do it with effort and determination.
Mr.Moore is a wonderful teacher, and all his lectures are accessible online if you do not want to go in person. Make sure you pay attention in this class however as the work is very difficult and MALL is required 2 hours a week no matter what. Use MALL as a time to learn and do homework and ensure you stay on top of this class. Tests are hard!
Let's be clear. This is a very difficult class. If you or a friend took Calculus in High School or Community College, that level of Calculus is not a good indication of what this class will entail. Make sure you do your homework, go to recitations, and ask questions to understand in a very deep level the concepts and you will pass!
I took him my first semester for calc 1, I recommend him! you can see that he cares about his students, he explains well and the tests were alright but as in any calc course, you have to study a lot. overall I really liked him as a professor.
As someone who is horrible at math, Mr. Moore was a great professor! He cared about my experience within the class and learning the material. He definitly made calc 1 less horrible!!
Best math professor Ive ever had!
His lectures are unhelpful and pretty difficult to follow. If you've taken Calculus before, you're probably still going to struggle unless you're talented in the subject. You have recitations and a quiz each week which in my case were a waste of time. You have to put in a lot of work for the grade and it doesn't come easy. No study guides from him
Dr Moore knows what he's doing and cares deeply about student success.
Professor Moore is an interesting math person. I enjoyed his lectures and really the class as a whole. He is very caring of his students and wants each and every one to prosper in his class. He sets you up to pass basically. I mean you get a good amount of homework, recitations, quizzes but thats all practice that WILL help, and use the textbook.
Very fun lectures (if you enjoy crazy professors). Very knowledgeable in his field. Handwriting can be hard to understand at times. Class is setup exactly the same as all sections. A curve is built into the class with an ~83% being an A. Midterms are pretty straightforward and make up about 34% of your grade and the final making up 17%.
Dr Moore is absolutely GOATED and has a format that makes it very doable to pass the class, I couldn't recommend him enough.
i love brain moore.. his lectures were a little hard for me to understand because of my lack of previous knowledge with calc but hes so funny and chill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and he seems very passionate and caring of students.. def recommend!!!!! my favorite...
Dr. Moore is great! He encourages coming to office hours and coffee hour and you can tell he cares about his students. Obviously calc is difficult but if you stay on top of the homework, passing isn't that hard to achieve. He is definitely better than other calc 1 professors I have heard of. Also shoutout to my TA Eduardo Evans he was great too :)
Dr Moore is an amazing professor, great guy.
