Just the greatest human being. Haven't had such an amazing learning experience in my life. In a school overrun with researchers uninterested in teaching, this man is so innately charismatic, hilarious, approachable, and intelligent, that it immediately makes you question the kind of education you've been paying for in all your other courses!

This is my 3rd time having brian -hes by far my favourite prof at UW! Gives the students great relevant info/stories from his professional experiences that fits into the course content. Midterm is long but completely fair (pick 2 of 4 essays), take home final same as midterm, and a 15 page paper. Keeps students engaged! Everyone attends class!

Orend is great! I've had him twice so far and in fact picked the PHIL315 night class over the other prof just so I can be in his class again! He really knows his stuff and gives clear and informative lectures, he is also very fast at responding to questions so if you have any just shoot him an email. An amazing lecturer and prof, really funny too!

First things first, if I see him on Tinder, I would swipe right ;) AHEM back to the real thing, lectures are AMAZING, you miss out if you skip. Super friendly and accessible outside of class! Really challenges you in terms of making connections between theories and real world situations. Very knowledgeable. And did I mention that he's cute?

Well, there's a ton of writing (as I sit here simultaneously writing out 4 essays between 2 of his take home finals), but that's a small price to pay for having the privilege of being in his classes. One of the most gifted lecturers @ UW & probably has the talent to make engineering ethics interesting for an arts student. Plus no textbook! :)

He's a reasonably good lecturer - however, he didn't provide much feedback. In this course, he simply gave some overall comments on the final exam. Midterm was marked by TA (2 short comments). The more detailed you are in your exams and essays, the better you'll do. I don't feel challenged in his classes which is a serious weakness. Meh.

Lectures were long, but he made them interesting. Being thorough and detailed is important for the exams, but he gives clear structure and expectations for the exam questions. Final is take-home, and there's a free 5% in the form of a course reflection. Overall great prof, but could be better at providing sample case studies and feedback.

First, he's not hot. He's average & has a small build. Moreover, I find him analytically lacking. He has decent elocution; he isn't monotonous but nothing he says is remotely intellectually striking. Boring because material was directly out of the text. He's VERY bureaucratic. Can't be late even if you have good reasons. Lacks compassion.

He's one of the greatest philosophy professors I've had! Extremely passionate and knowledgable in his field. Very insightful and open-minded. The course itself is very useful in the real-world as well, it's one of those courses that will actually stay in your head, unlike those courses where you write the final and forget the entire course after.

Not worth it to be honest. His courses tend to lack feedback and he has a higher opinion of his own teaching than he should. I didn't find anything about his lectures really interesting. Agree that Brian Orend is grossly overrated in both teaching and scholarship. Don't understand the hype and having taken classes from other brilliant profs in the department, he falls short. On a personal level, I found him rude and insensitive. Mentions PhD from Columbia to brag, but it just makes me question their standards.

He is an excellent lecturer who can keep a 3-hour class interesting, but his assignments are very heavy; an average assignment is 12 to 15 pages, 1.5-spaced. The midterm and exam are also very long, so you have a lot of work to do in class. Good teacher, but the assignments are challenging and very writing-heavy.
