Boring teacher with extremely dry humor. Tries to relate all material to a chart. Don't expect a straight forward answer when asking questions. gives pop quizes at random. But gives extra credit that he will never explain. I hated every day of this class. Good luck... God bless your soul if you wish to enroll in this class.
This class was tough, but that's life. This could've been awful, but ORoark made it interesting. People who complain just didn't want to work. Good teacher. Take him.
This class was aweful. I was the only one I knew of in my class not failing. He gives notes, but leaves out major points that connect everything together. Tests were crazy, I studied for 3 days and still got a C. I don't think reading really helps. I would never take him again.
This is the hardest class I have ever had. I would definitely avoid him at all costs.
His Tests are impossible and a lot of confusing notes, does not curve, average on test is around 58%, a little extra credit but really dosent care if you pass or not DO NOT TAKE!!
You need to pretty much teach yourself because what is presented in class is only about half of what will be on your exams. He grades with money but he only does it because he thinks so much of himself. He is extremely cocky and there is almost no student participation in this class - Long Lectures Only.
uses good examples in class, difficult tests
Really boring in class. Notes not really useful. Do the aplia and you should be ok. Half pay attention in class if you go and bring the laptop. Do hw in there
quiz once a week, test every 3 weeks, online hw due every sunday, gives tons of notes, class is hard because of subject, come to class, pay attention, do hw, take notes, and u'll do ok, most people get in 70's but he gives a ton of extra credit, people complain about him but they dont do work and just not good at econ, hes nicer than he appears
Alot of work to do in such little time. you always have something do whether it be in class or online. usually taught material that we didnt need for the test.
As a person who appreciates going to school to acquire an education, I LOVED this class! Before attending, I had NO inclination toward Econ; but he covered everything anyone would ever need 'bout it & really boosted my interest. If you work hard, you'll ace it. If not, you're an idiot. If only wanting to breeze through, this is NOT a class to take.
O'roark is very dry and his class is extremely boring. Aplia an online homework site is required for the class that cost 60 dollars and is a big part of your grade. He is not helpful to his students and has an arrogant attitude. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Good guy, keeps a boring subject relatively interesting, just make sure you get the book and study. Difficult tests and random quizzes. If you miss one class you're screwed for 2, since you might miss a quiz and the next one will be all stuff taught the day before.
Tough Subject. Good Teacher. attendance is not required but i would not recomend skipping too much. He covers a lot in class and if you miss too much youll be totally lost when you come back. He definately knows what hes talking about. 4 exams. 10 short quizzes all multiple choice. offers a very easy extra credit project. Not a blow off class.
WOW TESTS ARE HARD AS HELL BUT AS FAR AS ECONOMICS GO THIS GUY IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS. HE TRYS TO HELP YOU LEARN THE MATERIAL
He is one of the most intelligent people I have ever come across and he knows his economics like the back of his hand. His class is rough because of the exams. Read the book and study the notes in advance before the exams and an A or B isn't impossible.
Worst teacher I have ever taken. Difficult to understand, tests are impossible, homework is useless. I am an A student and I got a low C in his class. He is full of him self and could care less about anything else. He is also very calky and arrogant. Do not take his class if you can avoid him!!! You will be sorry!
This guy knows his stuff, but doesn't really teach the things on the test. The tests are so hard, and the questions don't seem to even make sense. The average grade in my class at the end of the semester was a 67%. He gives bonus but it isn't worth enough points to even effect your grade positively. Had to study so much for tests and still did bad
absolutely loved him. take him if you actually want the subject to be interesting, class is not boring. exams are pretty tough, but read the book and you will be fine. he is not impossible! very funny guy and helpful if you just ask him. works with athletes schedules well. don't miss class and you will be fine. great teacher!!!!!
Great guy, he gave me alot of attention when I needed help. If he wasn't married. . . Great Prof on a boring subject
I had him for an online class last semester and he is hard! Read and re-read the book or you will not pass. I have a 3.8 GPA, and got a D in his class. :(
Not a blow off class. Have to put in a lot of time/effort or else you are going to fail. Random quizzes that you can not make-up...thats his way of saying you dont have to attend...because you'd have something better to do. Average class grades for each test are around 73%. Overall good professor, but tests/quizzes are difficult.
His class is not boring, which you would expect a microecon class to be. However, his tests were extremely hard and as a Dean's list student, I struggled to pass the tests. He used completely different information on the tests than he did in class, and anything else in the class really doesn't effect your grade. I wouldn't take him again.
O'Roark was an extremely knowledgeable teacher and he knew his stuff! His tests are somewhat hard, but as long as you take notes in class and pay attention, getting at least a B is to be expected. He offers a lot of bonus points at the end of the semester so just stick with the course and you will do fine by the end!
Online Class. Im an honors student..yet averaged 80% on his tests. You teach yourself out of the book, then he gives you 25 minutes to take a 20 question quiz, where he changes definitions of stuff into his own words. Its not a bad class, just be prepared to work much harder than you should for an intro level class. Good thing its not my major.
As an Honors student, his class was very tough. He doesn't really use the book, but it goes along with the lectures. He makes Economics VERY easy to understand, however his tests are extremely hard and almost impossible to understand. His graphs and charts help a LOT but are only a small portion of what is on the test.
I had him for microeconomics.. His tests were impossible and I studied for hours..
ALthough, I enjoyed the class lectures and think he is a nice person, I would not recommend taking him for the simple fact that the tests are very difficult and there are very few if any easy problems. There are pop quizzes which were also tricky. If your a good tests taker this may be good for you. There were extra credits but worth very fw points
The book is not used, so unless you plan on studying for hours then I would not buy it. He didn't even refer to it once. Makes somewhat rude, arrogant comments about certain comments and will not hesitate to fail you. Def not a fluff class, this is the last class I took and it was by far the most difficult, I barely passed. Lectures are not bad.
AVOID. Pop quizzes including one the same day as a test. Very strict at grading, he always found a way to take off points on my extra credit. If you take him, read the book, study the notes, do the extra credit and do not miss any classes or you will regret it for a very long time.
Probably the worst professor I have had at this university. Takes points off of quizzes, extra credit, and homework, and doesn't even tell you what was wrong to better prepare. Made us buy the book and we NEVER used it. His tests are impossible. Avoid him at all costs.
His test are extremely hard. Unless your willing to teach yourself I would say avoid this professor. The pop quizzes he gives are also tricky. He does give extra credit, but it doesn't really help your grade.
Got to teach yourself. Hes smart and knows what hes talking about but tests dont come from lecture or book its like he makes it up
Awesome prof! Tests can be a little tricky but if you pay attention and do the homework your be fine. Gives a lot of real world examples and is also very entertaining. I would recommend him
this class was pretty hard - it was reading then quizzes every week, with 2 papers - the quizzes are pretty hard and require alot of reading. he is a cool professor but is not an easy A
Test's were difficult, Read the materials or you'll have problems.
My favorite professor so far at RMU. His conservative approach is refreshing as well as practical in his real world examples. The tests are hard, and are not strictly from the lectures, but if you take it upon yourself to read the text, the questions were pretty straight forward.
The course was hard, but anytime I asked him a question, he was more than willing to help. With his guidance I did very well in his class. I recommend picking him if you have the opportunity to.
definitely my favorite prof in my first semester. tough tests, but if you take the class seriously, you'll get an A or B. he gives you good notes, is very helpful, and gives hw only once each unit. the hw probs helped a lot, so do them
I took Macro online for my 1st class and I waited to take micro from him online. Great online teacher hard but great he put everthing for the hole class the 1st day. It has to be done at the end of the week. if you take this class with him take it online. this is college he is not here to make it easy or hold your hand
Definitely one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. A very thorough Professor, but for an entry level first year class, this class was way over the top for a student like myself who is very dedicated and straight A. His tests are EXTREMELY difficult.
AVOID. His grading scale is the worst idea possible. IE 1,650.045/2500.00 on an assignment is really confusing. He refuses to accept assignments that have been written. he will only accept typed answers, even though he give the assignment in a format that makes it difficult to type all the answers where they are supposed to go.
Dude is the hardest grader you will run into. He cares more about grammatical errors in your writing than the actual content. He is very narcissistic and condescending in the way he communicates to students (though he doesn't realize it). I had great quiz scores but anything with writing was marked down to a C or D. I got all As in COMM classes..
HORRIBLE!!! I took this class online and basically taught myself. His problem sets are extremely confusing, He basically tells you to draw a graph out of thin air with no information. I even got a tutor and he was scratching his head at these questions. AVOID! I learned jack! I got a decent grade, but I was so stressed out!!!
Hard class to understand and teacher does not clarify on anything.
It's a tough class, but O'Roark does a really good job of explaining and clarifying the material. Homework and exams are difficult but really test your knowledge of the concepts. Really nice professor who is willing to help you out if you need it. A lot of people here complain he's tough, but Econ is a tough subject, especially in upper level courses, so I don't know what they were expecting. I'd recommend him for sure.
O'Roark is challenging, but I felt like I learned a lot in his class. Even though attendance isn't mandatory I enjoyed going to class. Macro is a hard subject to grasp, so if you're confused he is available when you need help. My biggest complaints would be that he teaches at a fast pace and his homework is unclear at times. Very nice guy I think.
Chances are, he's your only option for an online summer econ class. As a gen. ed class, it really shouldn't be this difficult. My advice? Commit time EACH day to reading/studying the book; make flashcards; stay on top of the work so you can ask him for clarification. If you can, don't take any other classes - this one is more than enough work...
This class was absolutely awful. Dr. O'Roark, failed to mention an entire area of blackboard that was available for additional linkshelp. His videos of himself were confusing. The problem sets made no sense and as others have written, despite getting a tutor, I was still clueless. I am thankful I passed, barely. Would NOT recommend for online.
Dr. O'Roark is one of the best instructors I've had. This was my first college class, and although challenging, he was very clear on the grading scale and the lectures were very interesting. Once again, it is hard. But you'll learn a lot. He WILL help you and answer ANY question you have. But, the responsibility is ON YOU. Read the book, show up.
He was by far my favorite teacher this semester!! It's a tough class but you can tell that he is really passionate about economics. He writes every single word he says on the board (and it's all important) so that you don't miss anything when taking notes. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Highly recommended. I hope I have him again!
Not a lot of assignments, he does give a pop quiz almost every other class. His ability to make a very dry subject interesting is very helpful. If you want a good grade be sure to READ THE BOOK!
Overall great professor. You will learn a lot of valuable info especially if you pay attention and put forth somewhat of an effort. His lectures are long but he keeps them interesting with his humor and clarity. POP QUIZES: they are only 4-5 questions and are only from material learned in the previous class. 4HWs-4 tests and bonus opportunities.
Problem sets were extremely difficult, as he makes up his own questions. He is also a very tough grader. This class may be different in classroom setting, but I'd highly recommend avoiding taking his online course. Even with a tutor for additional assistance, I still struggled. My tutor was confused, at times.
Dr. O'Roark is a phenomenal teacher. He has a great understanding of economics and understands how to teach it. One of the best professors I have had. Challenges you but give extra credit so if you are will to work for it, you'll get an A. He will make you smarter.
He's good guy who knows his material, but when it comes to assignments and your actual grade for the course, good luck. His material is brutal and can leave you shaking your head at a problem set for hours and getting nowhere. He makes everything himself and is a tough grader, even for the slightest grammatical errors. Only take him if you have to.
He seems like a pretty ok guy over email, but I'm taking this survey of economics online and it is the MOST DIFFICULT CLASS I have ever taken. Seriously, I took this for some credits over summer thinking this class wouldn't be a burden, but it has done nothing but ruin my summer and my GPA. All I do is stress over this grade. Don't take online.
Time spent on this class is equivalent to 4 classes. Extremely difficult if you have other classes and/or work. I have studied more hours than I have worked this summer. I don't believe he should offer his classes online. RMU needs to invest in more econ instructors who offer on campus classes.
Class was practically half online, half lecture. The homework was plentiful and challenging. His tests were a mix of information learned in class, from the homework, and from the book. Good amount of extra credit earned from various opportunities in class if you showed up, even though it was non mandatory.
Good professor, great lectures and really teaches you a lot. Gives out a decent amount of extra credit. Don't skip his classes. He doesn't have an attendance policy but if you skip, you'll miss a lot of material. Tough grader too, tests that I thought went well usually ended up being C's. Would take again, but not for a more difficult course.
Excellent professor. World-class knowledge when it comes to Economics and thinking like an economist. He makes you apply the information rather than puke up what you're reading. Very challenging, tons of reading, and make sure you use a grammar checker for work. Very fair grading and a very nice guy with a great sense of humor.
Really cool guy and great teacher. Really cares about the topic and his students.
He is a great professor! His exams are a little difficult, but there are enough easy points to still get a good grade. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you probably should go if you want to do semi-decent. He talks a lot about superheroes, too, which is awesome.
Great prof. Definitely knows his stuff. Assigned four books at the beginning of semester, and you must read 100 pages a week if you wanna pass the weekly quizzes. Studied about 4 hours for midterm, got an A. Final was take home, but required several hours of work. Papers are both easy, if you pay attention. Hoping to take him again for econometrics
This is a tough class and there's a lot of reading involved. He assigns 4 "textbooks" that aren't really textbooks but u have to read them for the quizzes. He gives take-home tests but they are pretty intense and you won't find many of the answers in a quick Google search; trust me. This man may be a genius in the realm of Economics.
I had to take him for Economics as a gen ed class, totally worth it. He makes it interesting and always has a good time with it.
Actually made lectures really enjoyable and there were some days where the whole class participated in activities that helped us better understand the topic.
From day one, Dr O'Roark has engaged me with every lecture he makes and sprinkles in different parts with participation via games and such. These tests really put your knowledge of all subjects to the test, so enter at your own risk. But, if you really try to understand the topics and want to learn, it'll be fine. Not an easy A, got to work for it
This wass a tough class. The tests are difficult and there is homework due every Sunday. Some of the homework is graded on correctness and so you can't just blow it off. However, if you actually try, the class is fine. Dr. O'Roark himself gives great lectures and will help you out whenever he can. Would definitely recommend you take him if you can.
Really cool teacher and is clear while teaching
Hard to get an A. Lecture heavy, covers material fast and not too clear. Can be confusing and you will feel clueless. Weekly homework&quizzes are based on that book. Read the book thoroughly, you wont have an issue. Set reminders to remember the quizzes and homework (sundays@11:59pm) There are 3 exams, all rigorous, I only passed the 1st one.
He genuinely enjoys teaching, and he tries his best for students to understand the content and want to come to class. The tests can be challenging but if you pay attention in class, read, and do the assignments on time, you will do well in the class.
First prof that is genuinely passionate about what he teaches in class and makes lectures interesting. He has many in class activities that keep class interesting and allows us to get a break.
Great professor Inside the classroom with lectures. Makes the class fun and jokes around. Homework and quizzes are due weekly and are VERY hard, not to mention his exams are the HARDEST thing Ive ever done, even after hours of studying from NO study guide. The second you get lost in class youre done for. He never emails back when you have a ??
Tons of quizzes and assignments. Very tough grader; would take points off for any reason. He would take points off in blackboard discussion board just for capitalization! Hey this is not a research paper! It's just a forum!!! While this is a 1000 level class, be prepare to work as if it is 4000 level class!!
Just another one of your pointless classes that the school makes you take. The professor acts like this is the most important class on gods green earth. As I stated that this is just a course the school makes you take and the amount of work that is involved is laughable. His test cover roughly 5-6 chapters and has no study guide.
He's tough but he's a great professor. He gives lots of chances for extra credit, so if he asks for volunteers for something for class - volunteer! I guarantee he will give some or all of the volunteers extra credit. Do your work, theres' a lot of it.
I realized shortly into the class that this prof wrote and required his own books for class. That didn't sit well with me as I see it as an ethical dilemma. Immediately dropped the course.
Make sure you have all the books he requires. He is the author of the books you will be using so he knows the content. Make sure to read the textbook as the Inquizitive and Smartwork activities will take their content directly from it. Inquizitive is quite easy but the Smartwork5 is difficult. It can be extremely time-consuming and misleading.
Spare yourself and your sanity - do not take his course
Do the work. Pay attention and read text. Very easy class but a low of work. Test are online and open note. Class participation points and Extra credit opportunities. Likes to move fast, but not to hard to keep up and he knows what he is taking about. In my opinion he is great teacher and would take again, but class does require outside work
Brian is a good guy but his class is very work-heavy. Attendance is suggested because he randomly does class participation. It'll help your grade. Tests are online but still challenging. Book is needed because Inquizative and Smartwork assignments are assigned from the book. Macroeconomics is a hard course, but he is a good explainer.
Dr. O'Roark is incredibly knowledgeable about the subject and loves questions, don't be intimidated by large classes. 2-4 homework assignments a week. Homework is challenging but really not that bad. Exams are take home and open note. Pay attention, do the reading/homework and you will do very well. I will be taking Dr. O'Roark again in the future.
Great teacher, shows clips of the Office in class. Lots of lecturing and notes. No flexibility on due dates.
Fantastic Professor. Take all of his classes.
3 Exams. Exams were online. There are a lot of online assignments, but generally they were not that difficult. He makes class upbeat, and offers different forms of extra credit now and then. Do not hesitate to ask him a question in class or out of class, he is always willing to help.
Economics is the only class I got a B in during my time at RMU. There were just so few tests and they required you to really apply what he taught which is fine but there was just so much info in such a short time, it got confusing. I thought I got it before the tests and all three came back as B's which is how I got the grade I did.
I found this professor's way of teaching economics through an online platform to be overly complicated and frustrating. Test heavy, inQuizitive tests did not help me and only made the class more difficult and time-consuming. It seems like from other reviews that he is better with in-person lectures, but he should not be teaching online classes.
He grades homework on accuracy and not completion. The lectures he goes over in class do not reflect the homework, and the homework does not reflect the tests. He has a big project at the end of the semester that he grades too heavily on grammar; this is an economics class, not an English one. READ THE SYLLABUS OR BECAUSE DOES NOT EXPLAIN IT WELL!
"there will be NO flexibility on the grading scale. The scale is established to be a credible commitment to standards of excellence in the field of economics. By inflating grades, the incentive to work hard and learn deteriorates to a distressingly large degree." Also makes a C+ a 78%. Guy is full of himself because he has published books.
Lengthy lectures. Hours worth of HW graded on accuracy. Impossible exams based on 5-6 chapters at a time. Harsh grading. Lectures do not match HW, HW does not match the test. A lot of work for a 1000 level class that everyone has to take. Online modules weekly. Group project is not hard, but will grade it like an English class.
Great professor just wish he slowed down a little. Just to make sure why have material down before we move on to the next chapter. One example of needing to slow down would be that the weekly quizzes are do on friday night not on Sunday. Which makes it hard for us to review the material and properly study. Also, the quizzes can be quite challenging.
The one piece of advice and I will agree with other people when they say that he needs to slow down.
He was ok. I felt like I learned more from reading and taking notes from the book than listening to his lectures in class. He assigns weekly homework which is more than what should be assigned for a 1010 level class. There are 3 exams and the final is optional. He wasn't the worst but not the best.
Dr. O'Roark is a great, passionate professor. He is open to help his students if they need it, and his lectures were often engaging. There is quite a few assignments, sometimes it feels like too many and the tests were a little bit hard. It is a fast-paced class and be ready to study and understand everything for upcoming exams. Wonderful guy.
Lectures can be lengthy, but Brian is a good explainer. Expect challenging exams covering multiple chapters and lots of homework. Using Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook helps with study prep.
Literally the worst. Writes his own book and teaches, no not teaches, LECTURES and thats it, from his own opinion. There is way too much weekly work for a SURVEY class. No late work, tests are so hard, and is SOOO picky with grading projects even if you follow all directions. This class should be 4000 not 1000. Never will take again.
Did this online, so I can't speak fully about the professor, but he was pretty chill. I found the tests to be pretty hard, honestly. They are A-E multiple choice, which makes it a little trickier. As far as 8-week classes go, there is A LOT of material to get done, so do not fall behind. Do your work and earn an easy A- to A honestly
This class is the Bermuda Triangle of academia. The lectures are in one dimension, the homework is in another, and the tests are beamed in from a hostile alien planet where economics was never invented. My advice: Don't study. Just show up and let the spirit of John Maynard Keynes guide your pen. You have the same chance of passing either way.
Very intense courseload and difficult subject material at some points. However, he compensates with being a fun professor and really tries to get students to understand the material in new and creative ways.
