Loads of reading - he's very helpful though. Not crazy about the way the class is set up - read, quiz, then discussion.
This class takes up alot of time. Alot of reading and writing. Pretty average teacher. Only good thing is he gives you extensions for everything. You have until the end of the course to make anything up for a higher grade.

if you have a limited amount of time DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS w/ peterson, it is such a waste of time. i was writing about plants and making websites instead of learning about world history.
I got a good grade in this class. He is very laid-back when it comes to papers and such. However, I did not like the fact that he assumed everyone to be a history major. I took this as an elective and found myself lost half the time. If you're a history major, then you'll be perfectly fine!
I've taken him before, loved the class then, and loved this one as well. You learn a lot and you've got to live his POV on things.
I took this class online and it was easy. We had to do less work that the lecture class. We only had papers due every mon but then people complained and now its only every other monday. He is very laid back, understanding, and gives extensions. He also gives extra credit worth alot.
this guy knows his stuff. really effective teacher. felt most of the classes were easy and i still learned alot.
He is a great professor. Though you do have to read the material, he is easy and helps you though all the papers. Made the class interesting and entertaining. But you will perform a dance!!!!!
Holy**** This Class Is Sooooo Much Work! Take Something Else! We Had Like 4 Tests, A Billion Quizzes, 15 Papers, To Make 2 Hard Ass Webpages, To Put On A Play That We Made Up. Super Time Consuming! Don't Recommend!
The lecture potion of the class is interesting, but the group projects and meeting are pointless. He assigns a ton of work! I would reconsider taking this professor, if you are a busy person.
He changes the syllabus like every week, so you'll be wasting a LOT of paper printing it over and over again. Also, it is a lot of work and writing but this class is a humanity for me; so we have to write a specified amount of words... so it's what I expected. Other than the incredible word count we have to fulfil... he's making each group do a FOLK DANCE at the end of the semester.... ummmmm... is he CRAZY! (rollin eyes) Oh well...
Very understanding and lax on papers, allowing you to rewrite them for a better grade or turn them in at a later date.Furthermore, he offers extra-credit opportunities in most semesters. You will, however, have to work substantially for your grade.Extremely well-informed on countless historical topics.Open to suggestions by students. Recommended.
DONT take this class! it's a complete insult to your intelligence...you bust your ass writing a paper every single week and 2 long papers, you also do a power point. all this and you cant get a freaking A unless you do a stupid ass dance! are you kidding me? are we in college or elementary? total **** class!!
Likes to discuss topics with class. Group projects with powerpoint is a drawback. 3750 term paper to do at end of term. 500-1000 word essays on books. No quizzes or tests. No MT or Final. Lax on papers and very cool about turning in late. Easy grader. If you can handle a term paper, then I recommend.
This was the fourth course I took with Professor Peterson and, as expected, his virtues and professionalism remain intact. He encourages class-discussion and, naturally, he is very respectful of everyone’s opinion and willing to grant all students an opportunity to voice their opinions. His syllabuses typically appear daunting at first glance, bu
This is my favorite professor at FIU! He is always open to new ideas, this is because he teaches courses where he wants to learn things as well. He doesn't pretend to be an expert on everything. He is very lenient with his grading, and if you have a problem, just tell him and he'll help you.
PETERSON ROCKS. Yes, tons of writing. But the man is a legelnd in knowledge and in helping students. He knows his stuff, he helps you out with deadlines. He's the best. He's there to help you and for you to learn. He loves input, so participate. Don't take advantage of him. He's an awesome prof.
Fast paced! He does seem like a nice person but every week there is an essay due. they alt in length between 1400w and 700 w. I did not recieve the schedule from his TA on time and fell behind. It was too difficut for me to catch up b/c of my other classes and work I had to drop the class. no dancing :(
good prof. interesting & knowledgeable. posts lectures online & u're not even get tested. the ones who are complaining are those who didnt like the load since there are 1 pg. papers every wk, 3 big papers, a webpg, & a folk dance. the grading is done by the TA xcept for the folk dance at the end. he also gives lots of xtra credit.
I always hated history in high school. I took this class in the summer, and I loved it. There was a lot of reading and writing.. but no tests. I learned A LOT and enjoyed the class discussions. The final was a folk dance..that was fun. I recommend this class.
He's a bit weird but very helpful. No tests, just annoyin essay that are easy. Supposedly you have to read books...but its all on the internet. I got a B+ and didnt buy a single book...but i took this class in teh summer, dont know if there's a difference. Oh, and they ambush you with a very stupid Folk dance at the end of the course...either that
the weirdest class and professor ever!!!! I did not like going to this calss. He just seemed to blabble all the time. It wasnt an interesting class at all, but I took the class in Sprin 2003, so maybe some things have changed.
6 essays 500 words each (page and a half) and he drops the lowest one. Each paper is 10% so they add up to half the grade. Then, two term papers worth 25% each. The essays are based on books but you do not have to read them all just the information pertinent to the essay. Much extra credit and can rewrite your papers.
easy A++++++++. just read the books, do ur essays, and a lot of extra credits....
He seems a lot more strict than he actually is. Grades are completely based on papers, which aren't difficult once you understand what he's asking for, which he can be kind of vague about. The folk dance that you have to do is also kind of fun, if you have an actual dance leader who shows up.
Competent and compassionate with human understanding.
Awful class. The professor is certainly good in his lectures, but the lack of tests and assignments related to his lectures gives you no incentive to listen. Besides a bunch of reading on war-related books and writing easy term papers about them (though he's vague on what he wants), you waste your time with art activities and a dance project.
Wow, this guy seems to be all over the place. We didn't even use the stupid textbook, he changes some things at the last minute. Half of the students were confused. If you're not good at staying on top of things, he's not the guy for you. All in all it wasn't that bad. I got an A, but worked pretty hard.
his lectures are useless but attend class anyway. he is really nice but has a obsession with long term papers. i got an A in the class but thats because i was a representative and made friends with my T.A. half the class is with him and the other days with the T.A. a lot of books but they were never used, so don't buy them. overall good class!
If you're a history major, do yourself a favor and take one of his upper level classes. Totally interesting and the essays are a breeze. The class discussions are fruitful and Peterson is more than helpful outside of class in regard to your path towards your history major.
He is super helpful and will allow you to rewrite his papers a million times however he isn't the easiest grader. Lots of extra credit available, participate in as many as possible he'll really boost your grade for it.
EASY A! don't take the section with him though take it with Carolina the TA shes super nice and an easy grader =)
you have to read a lot and write some random essays here and there. try and be section leader if you can because it really helps your grade. extra credit is good too. get ready for some random play or opera at the end... its not as bad as it sounds. it just gets annoying because you have to perform during finals week... lectures a lot.
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR...TOO MUCH WRITING. I THOUGHT LIKE I WAS IN A MASTERS PROGRAM. DO NOt TAKE..IT IS NOT WORTH THE HEADACHE...AND YOU WONT learn much
Prof is nice but TA are A****** The second day of class we already needed to turn in a paper! TA gave me an F on Opinion paper! Its my opinion how can you tell me if im right or wrong!! Takes this class way to seriously and its just a bunch of BS that you dont really have time to learn because your too busy reading a million books!Take somone else
You better make sure he likes you as a student because if he does not he wont give you the grade you deserve...i got a B+ in his class and i worked my but off and at the end did not learn anything..so try to get on his good side and if you can take the class with the TA and not with him becuase everyone who goes with the TA gets an A in the class.
.. worst teacher ever!...
I had some personal issues during this semester and he has done everything in his power to assure i stay in the class and pass and keep up. This is an upper level history course, Nazism and the Holocaust, papers aren't too hard, if you're a history major definitely take him. He knows his stuff. I'm taking him again next semester.
this class was extremely boring and if you just fall behind on one this your screwd...there are papers due every week and he is not clear at all on what he wants you to write....horrible teacher...and the TA's are a joke....
terrible professor... please do not take him
do not take him. you will regret it... He makes you write useless papers... you will never need.
Hes a really nice person but if your looking to write a 3-5 page paper every 2 weeks and read ALOT of books then hes your guy.He was never clear exactly what he wanted on the papers, he gives like 1 question quizes every day. He does give alot of extra credit work but over course you have to write a paper for most of them.I have never wrote so much
He's alright, the work was somewhat easy. Just be prepared to write like crazy.
He is really nice. But the way the class runs is horrible. Too many papers and a lot of reading!! I had to work really hard for a B in that class. He is working on making his classes better though.
Makes you write over 11 ESSAYS and read over 7 BOOKS all in just one semesters.... if you take him in the summer he makes you read over 4 BOOKs and once his class only had 2 BOOKS but they were over 800 pages long EACH
I took him for EUH4033 online. There are 13 essays to write. He grades the papers for what he is, a professor, though sometimes he is a little bit harsh. It was not too hard for a higher level course.
The best professor I had in FIU. He is a hard grader but wants his students to learn and reach their potential. He never smiles but, he is very nice... understands external problems. Nazism and Holocaust is an exellent class. I learned alot.
He is the worst teacher of life. I wouldnt even let me teach middle school. Is very cynical, superficial, and condtridicting. Dont buy the books, you wont need them. The most giant waste of my time-he needs to stop teaching.
Amazing teacher! Always there to help but you have to be willing to put in an effort. Really loves to learn and teach what he has already learned. Very interesting course.
This class is pretty easy if you read all the books and write your essays...but he also makes you read like 6 books for the semester along an essay...so if you are up to reading a lot of books and writing a lot of essays, you are good.
Pray you get an awesome TA, or else this is hell. Total of 7 books in one semester, expects you to have it all read and finish, and a 500 words body, with 250words for the intro and the conclusion(each). Big ups to Derrick Lang(my TA), or else I would have dropped this course... One thing though, He did let you rewrite all your essays over
BORING! A paper every week, work in groups, easy stuff. He gives an extension for everything, my suggestion, make friends quick, delegate work fairly and switch over to cruise control.
I took this class online. Prof. Peterson really knows his stuff. You won't get away with BSing your way through an essay, you really have to read the books, all seven of them, and compare them to a text book and his powerpoints, citing info from all three sources. This class will teach u to write and about diverse cultures around the world.
i took this class online.not easy but not hard.what is on the syllabus is NOT what he wants.i would write the essay and he would then tell me to re-write it cuz that is not what he wanted.he will ALWAYS give you a chance to re-write.wether your fault or his.i write bad and the lowest grade i got on a essay was C.so everyone should be fine.
Horrible teacher. It seems easy at first but then he tells u that u need like 10 books. You need about 20 citations for every essay!!! He isnt hard but demands too much work for a class no one needs.
Professor Peterson is the most helpful and intelligent professor FIU has to offer. His Critics are either lazy or not bright enough to understand him. Yes you must write a bit more than for other classes however you will learn. If you are too lazy don't take him. If you want to learn then I recommend him 100% above anyone else in the history dept.
Prof. Peterson loves group work, calling on people, and doing plays and art projects. He is very nice but he's not the one that grades you..your TA does. Pray you get a good one. I didn't & my grade's suffering because of it. This class is very boring and requires a lot of writing, but its a Gordon Rule class so you should expect that.
The class is extrimelly boring. The attendance is mandatory but the sessions are a waste of time. The most important thing is that you get a good TA. Mine was really nice.
he is just horrible he kept changing the syllabus every five seconds...didn't know what he wanted. you have to read like 6 or 7 books in one semester, and everything. he expects you to get the idea and write the paper in a week. hope for a good TA. i didn't learn anything
Prof. Peterson is a top notch professor and human being. He cares that everyone does well but will not just give you an easy ?A?. His class does require a lot of reading and writing but he is very understanding about giving extensions. He loves group work and assigns a play and an art project for each group that will give everyone two easy A?s.
Not hard. A lot of reading but not bad. He lets you fix and resubmit papers for better grades.
He definitely once fell into the crazy hippie category. His views are radical and sometimes entirely out there. But I think that just adds to his uniqueness as a person and as a professor. The only complaint I have is that his directions and assignments are very vague. However, he seems pretty intent on giving everybody an A.
A true professor: Extremely challenging but extremely helpful. Will give notes on your writing and researching like "dig deeper" but will guide you if you need help. Open door policy in his office really helps. Hard professor--but at the end of the class you will come out a better writer and researcher. Not for students who like to coast.
I had him for several classes. Easy professor, just do the work, keep up with the assignments and you should have no problem. Lets you know up front he's a left-winger, but don't be scared to express your personal viewpoint - he's extremlely respectful to student's views, no matter what they are.
I've had him for two classes. A mountain of reading and lots of writing, but totally worth it. If you like the subject material, it's a bonus. But, even if you don't, you will definitely practice on your writing and public speaking skills.
I was so scared of this class up until the very last day. Then I looked back and realized I had learned a ton and truly enjoyed myself. Buy the books, read the books when you're supposed to, and go to class. He does reading quizzes but they barely count. There are 3 papers but if you can research and write a hefty paper around 8 pages, you'll pass
he's adorable and awesome!
The class seems easy at first until you realize that you actually have to read each novel til the very last page. He gives 10 ? hard quizzes on these novels and then essays about them, in which his syllabus does not make it easy to understand what exactly he is asking for. This class is not for someone who wants to get an easy A. Pick another one.
I have to say this class is, well crap and pardon me saying it in that manner. The essays are long, ardous and unclear. Taking this history class basically felt like taking geography. I understand the relationship but far too much emphasis is placed on the environment. I honestly forgot that the class was a history class at one point.
it seemed like he didn't have any knowledge about anything in that class....it seemed like he didnt know about any of the topics he talked about in the class. a lot of his powerpoints had spelling mistakes...reading a lot of history books in the past my self about Persian Empire and Islamic Religion and that part of the world, his knowledge about t
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE!... is too easy to fall behind on the readings, every week is a new topic and have to read 4 books. If you know you are going to be on top of the assignments every week then take it, but if you KNOW you are not that responsible then take it in person. Im repeating it since i fell behind on readings. NOT AN ONLINE CLASS
Interesting, but lets political biases heavily influence his teaching which I think is a major detriment to most discussions in the class. Assignments are extremely vague, but no matter what direction you take them in effort on your part gets you an A. Not a threat to your grade, but his political biases run rampant.
Very good professor, very knowledgable
the sweetest, most, understanding, patient radical on earth!
the good--> class is easy, close to 30 extra credit points avaliable toward your final grade out of 100. can rewrite all paper multiple times The bad-> class is boring, uses i clicker so attendance is manditory
Took this class as an independent study. I loved it. He really allows you to explore your interest on whatever topic you choose. If you want to do a focused study on a topic, this is the class for you.
He may be knowledgeable but he thinks if is class isnt stressful, its not worth taking. disorganized, lectures are to fast to actually comprihend.
IF YOU'RE NOT A HISTORY MAJOR DO NOT TAKE HIM. Dont get me wrong, he's a good professor, very knowledgeable but it's A LOT of work. though he gives lots of opportunities to make up grade. it's not ideal if you just need humanities with writing (historically based) take something easier.
Peterson is really knowledgeable, but the class left me feeling really unsatisfied. If you have really heavy coursework outside of this class beware, its a bit difficult to keep up. He does give A LOT of extra-credit oppurtunities for those who fall behind. Don't take if you're not majoring in History or have a high interest level.
I CAN'T SAY HE IS A BAD PROFESSOR, BUT HE HAS A DIFFICULT WAY OF TEACHING AND THERE IS A LOT OF READING TO DO. PASSING IS POSSIBLE BUT YOU HAVE TO PUT A LOT OF EFFORT
This guy doesn't know how to teach. Makes students read the most boring and senseless books and you have to bring a laptop everyday to class. WHAT! He may know his stuff but just makes the class difficult and boring.
I took two classes with him. I don't recommend this class in particular unless you understand Lacan philosophy. He is the kindest, most caring professor in the world who gives you chances to succeed, but his classes are among the most difficult of the history classes. You must keep up with the readings assigned in class as a weekly quiz is expected
I took the course online it is a lot of work. You have to read 5 books do a weekly essay on the book and peer review on 6 papers. In addition there are 2 research paper and one PowerPoint on the topic you researched. Peterson doesn?t really run the course his name is there as your instructor but in reality the course is run by TAs
He is a really nice teacher and he doesn't want anyone to fail but you have to do the readings. The class itself isn't very interesting but some of the readings were, don't take this class unless you have time to read and study. He'll only help a student who he knows is trying.
Super nice guy. He doesnt want you to fail, always lets you rewrite each paper. Do the extra credit for a whole letter grade more. Took him for summer B online class was pretty easy. 5 papers of 1,000 words. One research paper of 2,500 words. Easy class, professor he was a great guy. Very knowledgable, taught me alot. Got an A. Not a hard class.
Easy as long as you do the work on time. He values all opinions
Class is not SUPER easy but its not hard if you read. Its a lot of reading and writing, so if you want an effortless A, dont take it with him. Class is mandatory because of in-class group quizzes. Very passionate about his subject. Make sure you READ!
I took the online class and I never ever heard of him, only of the teacher assistant. You have to read A LOT and work every week on two 250 essays about questions they post, comment on your peer's post, and do three 1000 words papers, on a book you picked from a list. Powerpoints aren't that helpful, and you always need to do extra research.
Honestly super easy class, 3 papers 1750 words each, 8 quizzes on a assigned book and the final is basically a play on the time period! Easy A as long as you do the work and read.
Professor Peterson is the man. He lets you rewrite all of your papers. Read the books and study for the quizs and you shouldn't have a problem getting an A in his class. Make sure you read though. Really nice man.
I took him online and did not actually hear from him or speak to him once. The TAs basically ran the entire class. However, if you submit everything on time you will find them to be generous graders. Not very difficult, just keep up with the writings and it is a breeze.
Professor Peterson was amazing. He's so nice and gives you so many opportunities to raise your grade.Lets you rewrite each paper. Weekly quizzes and final was a group play! He's amazing!
Took the course online. Fully taught by TA . Very boring and overloaded with course work. The grading was strange as well. I wasn't very pleased with the course nor the TA. Take a different class.
Online. Taught by the TA. Too much work to take if you are taking 3 classes or more. A lot of reading and a paper to type every week on the reading for that week. The TA I had was too strict on the writing. It was never detailed enough for him. Assignments are to read one novel a week. Wish I never took it, not worth the stress and lack of sleep.
Took this course online. Professor Peterson does not teach the course the TA does. She was very poor at responding to emails also graded kind of strange. Rarely explained anything. DiPiettro was her name. I'd avoid this course with this TA.
Prof. Peterson is great! In the course we had to read several books which we had quizzes on. If you read the books, you'll do fine. I strongly advise everyone to read the books. I did and I got an A. Had to write 3 papers in the course which he let us re-do if we didn't get a good grade. I loved the course and he's a great prof. Easy A if you try.
Questions on some of the quizzes are completely off. TAs grade essays and do a horrible job at it (Basically assign grade based on turnitin.com plagiarism percentage). DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
2- 8 page paper to write. Had about 4 iclicker quizzes.individual quiz then group quiz(averages the 2) TAs are in charge of sections. they take paper attendance and iclicker attendance is EC! has EC to volunteer at an elementary school. Never bought or used the book. nice guy but kind of boring. Truly cares about the class
Peterson is one of the easiest professors u can take. Quizzes are basically keywords from the back of the book, papers arent very long (1000-2000 words usually), and if u mess up on a quiz or paper he lets u resubmit it and he overrides ur grade. Doesnt get any nicer than that.
take someone else cause he whispers the whole time..
Worst set up for a college class. He splits you into groups that you have to work with all year. He lectures about nothing for 15 min. then he'll tell you what to look for on google & then you present this to the class. Why go to class to teach myself? It's very pointless work. Grades are based on 3 (1000 word essays) & a 3000 word term paper.
worse class and teacher ever! cant hear anything he says and it feels like your just doing foolishness the whole time. class setup was stupid and makes no sense.
I took this class online and it was super easy! he does not teach this class at all though! it is his TA but he was very helpful. There is a lot of reading for this class and too many papers but the class is easy to understand and you can choose the topic of your essays. No exams but a final paper of 3000 word + a group prezi presentation
I took online with a TA. If you're going to take online you MUST manage your time for this class. Theres 3 books to read and you have to turn in a rough/final draft for each. Communicate with team members and it'll make the final essay and prezi so much easier. Not an easy class, but I got an A by working hard.
This professor truly cares about his students and their education. Always gives the student more than one chance to redeem themselves by makeup assignments and much extra credit. Do what is in the syllabus and you'll pass the class !
DO NOT WHATSOEVER TAKE THIS COURSE. THERE ARE THREE POINTLESS PAPERS: TWO 1000 WORD PAPERS AND ONE 3000 TERM PAPER. THE GRADING IS UNREASONABLE, HE RAMBLES ALOT BUT YOU WILL NOT LEARN ANYTHING, AND POINTLESS BUSY WORK ASSIGNMENTS
Great professor. He is very helpful and knows how to capture a students interest. Dr. Peterson is immensely knowledgeable in his field and it's a pleasure to be in his class.
Super nice, offers a ton of extra credit. Makes class a really fun environment and grades easily. You have to try to not get an A. Also lets you turn in work late all the time, overall amazing professor, loved him!!
Just be very aware of who your ta is.... mine was horrible almost cost me to fail the class.
Seriously one of the best professors I have ever had. It is easy to get an A in this class but if you hate to write, do not take it. If you want your writing to improve or are a great writer, Take him! Hes great and genuinely cares about his students and will give you so much extra credit. HIs class is also fun and set up pretty cool.
The worse Professor ever. To start with, he does not answer to his emails. He is a extremely hard grader, and arrogant. I would not even recommend this course to my worse enemies .
Please do not take him.... even if you will try very hard to get a good grade, you will be lucky if you will even pass. so to conclude, he has big but empty head, he cares only about his income.
The class is fairly easy if you read the book.. he reads off the power point so don't even pay attention. The reason I don't recommend this class is because he is the most disorganized professor EVER. Never answers emails and there are 2 weeks left of the class and I have not received any of my grades for the assignments we have done! TERRIBLE
Professor Peterson is a super smart, super prepared professor, and incredibly engaging and passionate about the subject. I learned SO much, but, of course, it was because we were assigned a 1000 a page book and had to write a 16 page paper. Tough grader, but will give you multiple opportunities to bring your grade up. No regrets. Loved this class.
Took this course online...I'm not one to write reviews but I feel the need to warn other students about the amount of reading and work in this course! It's not an easy A and you will be doing hours of research and writing every week. I have taken many online courses and this has, by far, been the most demanding.
He is a great teacher. I would take him again. Gives you extra opportunities to bring your grade up and fix your papers. He makes the class real.
Took this class online; the course content was vague and the weekly assignments included a research paper every single week. Peterson did not respond to 2 messages I sent him. VERY tough paper grader; simply doesn't believe in such a thing as a perfect paper. Would NOT take him again. You also read several books just for weekly assignments
I expected so much more out of this class & ended up regretting my decision to stay. In a Holocaust class, we read a book that resembled a wikipedia article (x1000 pages) and focused on none other than.... art. So not worth it. You'll end up skipping half of the classes and pray for the semester to be over.
If you do not make the effort to seek help then whatever grade you receive is the grade you deserve. He is an excellent professor and deserves much respect.
TAKE HIM! Seriously, enough extra credit is given to significantly boost your final grade. Don't be intimidated by the textbooks, they are heavy duty, but the engagement you show in the subject is more important. Participate and engage, if your shy in class, email him with your questionscomments. Participation and engagement matters. I made an A.
loves intellectual and psychoanalytical aspects to the people in the period in question. You get the chance to feel smart in the off-kilter group work done every day
I took this class because I was told it was an easy A. That person definitely lied!!! Attendance is 20% of your grade. Reads off of powerpoints all the time. He does not teach! Nor does he grade. His TA's do that. Always reading in this class and you have to read to pass quizzes and write papers. I read and still failed the quizzes. Just..... no
Dr. Peterson is one of the best professors at FIU. The guy is a walking legend. However, his class isn't as easy as everyone makes it out to seem. He is super helpful, and your given almost an unlimited amount of chances to bring your grade up. Don't pass up on the opportunity to take one of his classes.
