Great professor! First time teaching the class, did a great job. First test was easy, the second one was hard, but gave everyone 15 points(yes 15)to makeup for it. He is quite nerdy, but loves the subject. His voice can get dull, but you get used to it. Tests are 15 MC and written (short ans, essay) Homework is 5ish questions from reading, open book
Class was pretty difficult. He does post slides before class. I suggest printing those off and writing notes on them during lecture. Test could be a little ridiculous. Yes, he compensates grades depending on how the class did, but it just gets frustrating studying for them. Dr. Poole is a nice guy, but his class is harder than it has to be.
Dr. Poole is rad, I liked class progressively more each time I came. Expect quizzes every mon/wed. Tests are really clear if you know how to set up an experiment. Ask questions about things you find interesting that are somewhat relative to the topic, he loves it when the class actively participates. and he brings in object lessons regularly.
He's dry as the desert, but still cracks jokes related to the subject matter. I tutor students from his MMBio 240 classes. There are plenty of resources for you. I love Dr. Poole & his classes! He is a great teacher & a great man.
Great professor! Has a sense of dry humor that he slips here and there to make things interesting. Filling out the objective sheets are critical - if you know what's on them, you should do fine on the test. Also has demonstrations that really help with understanding the concepts. Always wants the class to do well.
Dr. Poole (aka Chance Daily) is awesome. His tests are pretty hard, but he really wants the class to do well. Also he is hilarious. If you focus on learning the objectives that he posts every week, you'll do fine.
Dr Poole is the best choice for MMBio240. He is a great guy that is excellent at explaining difficult topics and he gives you absolutely everything you need to ace the test. If you fill out the objectives, and attend reviews, he tells you absolutely everything you need to know for tests and doesn't try to trick you at all. He wants you to do well.
Great professor! His explanations make perfect sense and his tests are straight forward.
Dr. Poole is literally the best. He is one of the most approachable teachers you have ever met. He was more than willing to help and answer all questions, take personal time to talk with students, and is just a stand up guy in general. The tests were tough, you had to study hard, but he gives you all the information you need. Enjoyable lectures.
Dr. Poole is one of the best professors at BYU. He is very intelligent and very funny. His class is very do-able and he makes sure the class understands concepts before he moves on. Lots of demonstrations. Hard exams but straightforward, just need to study hard. He genuinely cares about his students.
Dr. Poole is great. He did his best to make learning the info as easy as possible. The tests were very fair. He teaches very clearly and his lectures are entertaining. I'm way glad I took MMbio from Poole. Highly recommended.
Take MMBIO 240 from him! He explains difficult concepts in a way that is easy to understand. He keeps class interesting with his nerdy but funny personality. He is also REALLY easy to work with. Don't be afraid to talk to him for any reason. Awesome teacher.
He has a dry sense of humor and is a very likable guy. The book was way too detailed to be worth the time. Tests weren't too bad--the final was not cumulative! I just watched youtube during the student presentations. You basically just need to read the abstracts of those papers before the tests. I slept through my own group's presentation.
Dr. Poole is awesome. He is a little quirky, but kept class entertaining and his tests were very reasonable, you knew exactly what to expect. As some advice, don't buy the textbook. Just use one at the Life Science learning center to do the quizzes and save yourself over 100 bucks. Oh ya, and lots of extra credit! Take Dr. Poole!!
Loved this class, informative and great! Study the slides and understand any concept he talks about in class. I never bought a book, but you will need to get ahold of one just to do the quizes. He's funny in a dry humor sort of way but a relaxed and nice professor. Study hard for all the exams and you will be fine!
Dr. Poole is just the best! His exams are totally reasonable. It's just like everyone else is saying-study the slides and objectives and pay attention to the little things he says in lecture, study hard, and you'll do great! Very straightforward. :) He is very helpful if you have questions. Keeps class entertaining and teaches things well!
Wonderful teacher; VERY easy grader. However, due to certain issues he freaks out over tiny things, like reminding him about an error in the gradebook.
Dr. Poole is the best teacher for MmBio 240. He makes it interesting and teaches it very clearly and the test is a good representation of material covered.
This professor is hilarious! His class is manageable as well. There is not too much material to cover, so he takes the time to really discuss the "ins and outs" of molecular biology. Based on discussions that I had with students that took different professors for MMBIO240, I learned that Brian Poole is by far the funniest, easiest, and best around
Dr. Poole is amazing! He is super funny and makes learning the material so much fun, yes, fun! He is a pretty easy grader, but you will have to work for your grade. Test have everything to do with what you learned in class, not tricks, just learn the material!
Dr. Poole is very dry and a little boring, but his class is really interesting and the tests arent very hard. He has objectives after each lecture that he makes the tests out of. So if you understand on the objectives the you will do just fine on the tests. I would recommend his class to anyone.
Some tests are manageable, but others are so over-the-top hard that there is no real way of knowing what you will be tested on. The TAs almost never gave reviews, so you're on your own.
I was scared of this class but it is actually super manageable. If you listen and take notes in class on the stuff that he says that's NOT on the slides, and then later combine that with the slides into the objectives, you're golden for exams. Dr. Poole also comes up with a lot of demonstrations that help explain and reinforce difficult concepts.
Dr. Poole is the man. Totally fair, teaches you what is necessary, tells you what you don't need to know. Review the slides, take good notes of what he says in class. KNOW the homework before the test and you are golden. Dr. Poole is great!
Honestly I feel like Dr Poole would be a better high school professor. In my opinion he doesn't respect our time in class. People seem to like his jokes, but they lower his credibility in my opinion. The homework is pretty simple and the tests seem okay.
Dr. Poole is the best professor! Just go to class and take notes... do the homework (it's not hard) and study for the tests and you'll get an easy A. The final is super easy as are all of the other tests. He's hilarious and sooo easy to listen to.
He is an awesome professor. He makes a hard concept simple. I recommend anyone to take molecular biology from him.
Dr. Poole is a genuinely funny man. He is extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter, and his TA's actually know what they're talking about, for the most part. The objectives do a great job of setting the expectations for the lectures and tests, and the content of the class was very interesting.
Dr. Poole is one of my top 3 professors I've taken a class from. He's super smart but doesn't treat you condescendingly. He's funny and makes lectures interesting. If class is slow it's because people are asking questions for the sake of asking a question. Dr. Poole gives reasonable work and his tests are fair.
The Powerpoints are no joke. If you know them and the homework questions you will get an A. There is one paper but it isn't bad. The class material is really dry so he tries to spice it up. Best/easiest MMBIO 240 at BYU
Dr. Poole has really fun lectures and makes them interesting and hilarious. He really makes you love viruses and bacteria more than you should. However, it is a hard class and you need to put in effort, not because Dr. Poole is a hard teacher, but just because of the nature of the class.
I took MMBIO 240 previously at BYU, and the structure of the class was so inconsistent and the homework system so flawed that it made the class impossible. I retook the class years later from Poole. Night and day different. His lectures are engaging, his grading is clear and fair, and he offers help where he can. certainly a good choice.
Only teaches this class winter semester. Offers extra credit on each test. He makes MMBio interesting and spices up lectures with humor. I don't like biology at all but I liked this class. If you know the slides and go to a TA review the tests will not be hard. Definitely the best MMBio teacher at BYU.
Dr. Poole is the man. I'd take all my bio classes from him if possible, because 1) he explains things so well and 2) he sounds like Patrick from Spongebob. Enough said.
You cannot possibly go wrong with Dr. Poole. He teaches you everything you need to know and nothing else. The exams are extremely fair and rarely have any curve balls. The final exam is also extremely easy. Clear expectations, hilarious, and very informative. Take MmBio 240 from him!!! You won't even open the textbook, just buy the online code!
Dr. Poole teaches very clearly and is very willing to answer questions in lecture. He seems to prefer questions. He enjoys teaching the subject. The material does get pretty detailed so be prepared. You will definitely want to do the homework, both for the grade and how much the questions reflect the tests.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but you'll want to go anyway. Super amazing and often hilarious classes. I loved 240 and 261 from him. I think everyone should take them both. Such a knowledgeable, funny guy. It's easy to be engaged and excited about the material. I feel like now I'm done with his classes I'm done with the best the college has to offer!
Dr. Poole is just great. He understands what he is teaching and can explain it in a clear, simple manner. However, he spits out a lot of information in one lecture, so pay attention and record the lectures. I would definitely take his class again.
This guy is awesome. He is a good teacher, and only tests you on what he teaches you. If you are willing to study, getting an A shouldn't be a problem!
I didn't really need the textbook because he teaches everything in class. With that being said, I took him for both mmbio 240 and mmbio 261. You want to pay attention in class because some things you won't find on the slides despite him saying everything comes from the slides. Not a hard class, just listen and he offers extra credit. TAKE HIM
Dr. Poole is a great choice for this class. Here's what you can expect: - Homework (5 questions) twice a week - 2 midterms and a final - 1 simple paper You likely won't use the textbook. He tests you on his slides AND the things he says during lecture, so you have to pay attention. Download his slides before, follow along and write extra info down.
Dr. Poole is fantastic. He is a great lecturer and really cares about his students. He wants you to know the material and succeed and is willing to adapt. His tests come from his lecture slides, so know those and you're set.
Dr. Poole is a fun teacher to take. His tests are all based off of his lectures and powerpoint so don't buy the textbook.
Dr. Poole is by far the best professor to take mmbio240 from. His tests are straightforward, and he gives you a detailed list of what to study for each chapter. He does a great job of trying to keep things interesting. Sets aside a lot of time for questions and additional discussion as well, and can answer just about any question you throw at him.
By far one of the best professors I've had at BYU. He is so intelligent and teaches difficult concepts so well, often with visual and object demonstrations. Tests are straight forward and he really has the student's best interest in mind. Take MMBIO from him if you can, you won't regret it. I, myself, will be looking for other classes he teaches.
Dr. Poole is one of the best microbiology teachers on campus. Very funny guy. He is very straightforward about what is on tests, so in that sense its not difficult. He responds quickly to emails if you have questions. I wouldn't buy the textbook. I will take him again.
Dr. Poole was great! My only thing against the class was that the third midterm was crazy hard in comparison to the first two. This was annoying because you think you know how to study for his test, then all of a sudden you have a randomly crazy hard test. That said, Each midterm progressively gets trickier. However, the final was not bad at all.
MMBIO isn't a super interesting class but professor poole tries to make it better. Unlike most science teachers he isn't trying to fail you or make you life hard. I feel like I got the same grade on every test no matter how much I studied so I wasn't sure what change.. In the end though he really is on your side and you will do alright in the class
Easy weekly quizzes due before class. 3 tests and a final. Final is comprehensive, but by far the easiest. Tests focus on small details in the slides. MEMORIZE THE SLIDES. One paper due near the end-- long but fairly easy. Funny, dry guy. Great at giving examples.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He is hilarious, makes class interesting, and I've literally never seen him skip anyone's question. He answers all questions that the class asks. He explains things well. Don't buy the textbook.
Dr. Poole is probably one of the best professors a BYU. Take any class you can from him. His grading criteria is clear. The class is very interesting and he answers almost all questions. Tests are based off of the slides, but content clarification comes form lectures. Make sure you take good notes. The final is the easiest of the tests. Ex credit.
I LOVED Dr. Poole. Don't get the textbookjust follow along on the slideshow and write down anything he says that isn't on the slides. Requires a fair bit of study and memorization, but that's just 240 for ya. Solid extra credit options. He's also hilarious. Definitely the best choice for this class.
Taking Poole's 240 class actually was the reason I switched my major to Microbiology. Tests and homework was very reasonable. He is a funny and very intelligent man. Some of the things he taught were difficult concepts and he taught them with ease and simplicity. I liked forward to every lecture. Would take again and again!
Dr. Poole is easily the best professor I've had so far at BYU. He's very engaging, he has hilarious demonstrations, and he always answers every question. Literally the best. Word of warning though: most of his TA's don't like to answer your questions, explain things to you, or interact with you in any way. Just talk to Dr. P if you need anything
Dr. Poole is a good teacher if you are ready to hit the ground running to learn mmbio. There is no required textbook for the class so it's hard to learn and you are expected to know a lot before class. If you are willing to put in the work to learn, he's great, otherwise, if you don't know anything like me, you will struggle.
Dr. Poole was AWESOME!! Seriously one of my favorite biology teachers that I have taken so far! He is very fair with grading and genuinely cares that his students are learning! He always answers everyone's questions in class! Super nice guy that loves what he does! If you are going to take MMBIO 240, take it from HIM!!
Dr. Poole is my favorite MMBio professor of all time!!!!! Seriously take at least one class from him. 261 was an amazing class, and even though I had to take a not ideal time for MMbio 240, I would never have taken 240 from anyone else. He makes it so interesting, and his easy to follow PowerPoints keep it clear. Not to mention he is HILARIOUS!
Poole's great. HILARIOUS guy too. Not an easy A but if you put in the studying you can definitely get one. Don't buy the textbook. Tests (4) are based on his slides. Would make a point of going to class and taking notes. Slides are vague. Does give out like 4% points worth of extra credit. One easy paper. Homework easily graded. Highly recommend!
Dr. Poole is the best, take any class you can from him. I found him very funny, he has a nerdy/dry sense of humor. Straightforward class with 2 midterms, final, weekly homeworks, and a paper that is graded very leniently. Definitely need to study for his tests but there are no surprises, just put in the time.
Dr. Poole is the best! He is very straight forward on his tests and tells you exactly what you need to study. You DON'T need to buy the text book, everything you need will be on his slides. He gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. Hands down the best 240 teacher!!
The book didn't help much, but the tests were mostly lecture based. Go to class and you'll be fine, just don't forget to submit the homework.
This class was team taught by Dr. Poole and Dr. Cutchins (from the English department). He's brilliant and has a great sense of humor. Being a general education class, he kept the biology portion at a pretty basic level, but it was very interesting and tied into the humanities portion surprisingly well. I really enjoyed his class.
Dr. Poole is the best! My grade went up 5% just from his extra credit. Don't get the textbook, you'll be tested off of specific material from the slides and problems he does in class. Attendance is essential. The TAs gave helpful reviews and that's where I learned most of the info that was on the exams. I wouldn't take this class from anyone else.
Dr. Poole really changed my perspective about Biology. Hands down to the best Professor ever! Three midterms and a final. Also, a paper due the end of the semester. Take this class from him. You won't regret.
Great guy! He is very down to earth and willing to help students succeed if they put in the effort. Class is difficult and the material can be confusing, but he is willing to work with the students for the grade they deserve.
I seriously love Dr. Poole. He is the absolute best. His classes are easy if you go to class and study. I enjoyed 240 more than 261, but that is just personal preference. He is super caring and funny. He doesn't quite appreciate the greatness of the Prequels, but loves Star Wars, and that makes him cool. Everyone needs to take one class from him.
Dr. Poole is hilarious. I laughed a lot. His powerpoint slides were basically just topics he wanted to teach us about and a list of exactly what he was going to ask on the test, so I would recommend looking at those, and going to class to listen to the answers. I never used the textbook, taking notes in class was sufficient.
Dr. Poole is an amazing teacher. He simplifies difficult concepts and relates material together. Gives great rants about vitamin C, essential oils, and vaccination. Loves his subject which makes the material easier to learn. Daily readings, a few essays. Everything was straightforward. Great class with great professors. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Dr. Poole is awesome! He is one of my favorite professors at BYU. His tests can be difficult but he gives you extra credit and a chance to redo one of his midterms, so it is very possible to get an A in his class. He is also hilarious. Make sure to go to lectures. Most test questions come from his lectures and his P.P.s can be hard to follow.
Dr. Poole is an amazing professor who obviously knows his stuff. MMBIO 261 is all memorization and if you pay attention in class and memorize his Powerpoint slides, you will do fine. He is funny and engaging and tries his best to make the material interesting.
Dr. Poole is great! He is a really good teacher. Make sure you ask questions in class when you don't understand something. His TAs are kind of useless unfortunately.
He's the best teacher and if you don't take MMBIO 240 from him you are doing it wrong!! Gave very entertaining lectures and was super personable. He knows what he's talking about and really good at helping his class to understand. As long as you memorize everything on his powerpoints and his lectures, you'll ace the class.
Dr. Poole knows what he is talking about and presents the material in an engaging way. For the Honors 220 class that he teaches he had a great chemistry with Dr. Cutchins. Sometimes the grading was a bit unclear and usually it took a while for them to grade tests and papers. Makes you think and exposes you to a lot of diverse opinions.
Dr. Poole is really funny, but they way he ran his class it was near impossible for me to succeed. The readings and lectures cover hundreds of different concepts, but the exam will focus on a tiny fraction of those concepts that are super detailed. So the only way to pass is to know everything and more. Almost entire grade based on exam scores.
FUNNY. A great lecturer w/fun demonstrations. Grade is mostly about tests, but know the learning objectives well & you'll be fine. 3 tests+final, 3 mini papers, online HW due before class(read the textbook for these. otherwise you'll fail them). Take good notes about things NOT on slides, & see TAs/him for any clarification. TAKE IT FROM HIM!
I didn't really care for this class. He's super funny and sometimes his let's are really funny and participation heavy wish is nice, but I found myself heavily relying on the TA review. There's also 3 mini papers you'll have to write. They aren't so mini.
I LOVE Dr. Poole. I am passionate about this topic, and having a professor who is passionate and has a great command of the class was great! He makes great visuals in class. I recommend printing out his slides and using them to make additional notes so you can write down his visuals and other helpful things. Very straight forward testing & grading.
Dr. Poole is a good guy that loves the subject but the class is not super organized. The exams were fair but the homeworks were really challenging at the beginning of the semester. He made changes through the semester but it was still not my favorite class.
Dr Poole is so funny! His tests aren't too hard and he makes molecular biology entertaining (which is not an easy task). He has the most forgiving grading scheme on the planet (you can retake 1 midterm). You will have to write 3 short papers, but they help you study if you do it right. He's great, I loved his class, even though biology is the worst
NOT an easy A class! graded on HW assignments, a research paper, 2 exams and a final. 1 extra credit paper. Average on midterms was a mid C for both. 25% of class dropped after first exam. Hard to study for exams. Only study material is his class slides which are very vague; topic bullet points which he then talks about. Need to take notes!!
It's pretty clear what's expected of you. There are online homeworks on the reading every week (I went to the TA lab for most of them), three midterms, and three mini papers. He even lets you retake a midterm. This class was difficult for me, but if you put in the work it's very doable.
Dr. Poole made me love molecular. He never writes on the board but gives you his slides- personally that worked for me. Lets you ask ALL questions in class. He is HILARIOUS. Has 4 tests and a few research papers.
He is a fantastic teacher. He goes the extra mile to teach concepts in class in really easy ways. Whenever other bio teachers subbed in for him nothing made sense, but he was great. A lot of memorization for tests but they're not hard. He let the class do an extra credit paper when people did poorly on one of the tests. He cares about his students.
Prof. Poole is one of the most amazing professors at BYU. His lectures make even the hardest subjects easy to understand. He cares about his students, answers questions clearly in class, and is absolutely hilarious. He made this class enjoyable, helped me love the subject, and helped me learn a lot. He is also very accessible outside of class.
Professor Poole is an amazing professor! He really loves what he teaches and does a lot of really funny demonstrations to help the class understand difficult concepts. The textbook is not required, you know everything you need for the test by attending lectures. There are only 3 tests, 3 papers, and the final and that's your grade.
Dr. Poole likes to involve his students in learning and makes the material pretty easy to understand. Tests weren't bad, but ask him to post an old test to help you study, that's the best study guide. He has an online book that has homework questions. He wrote most of the book so it matches lecture and is very helpful.
Dr. Poole is the best, and is the funniest biology professor I have had. He genuinely cares about his students and makes molecular biology easy to understand. If you have the chance definitely take it from Poole. His tests are straightforward and he provides past tests to help study from.
Dr. Poole is an entertaining professor who loves what he does. He is great at answering questions and a well-rounded professor. His TA's are extremely unmotivated, but I would recommend this class to anyone who loved biology.
Dr. Poole was a great Professor for this class. 3 tests and a final that are pretty straightforward. He wont try and trick you and make them difficult. Homework is optional. 3 mini papers that you basically get most of the points for if you just get it done. His lectures are funny and very helpful in simplifying things.
Dr. Poole has engaging lectures. The tests are challenging but not impossibly hard if you study and go to TA reviews and such. My only complaint is that in mmbio 261 the TA's don't have office hours to go over hw before submitting and dr. poole's demeanor when you visit him in his office with questions can make you feel like you're asking dumb Q's.
Fantastic teacher that actually makes learning enjoyable. I would take all of my course from him if I could. Your grade is pretty much just the tests, but that's fine as long as you pay attention in class. You definitely will need to study, but Dr. Poole makes it worth it.
Take this class from Dr. Poole! He is hilarious, and his tests are based on what is on his slides. Make sure to go to the TAs to get your minipapers checked before you turn them in, because they can be tricky. There is an extra credit paper at the end of the semester which can make up missed points and boost your grade up to 4%.
Dr Poole is my favorite professor. Hes a great teacher and is passionate about it. This class isnt too hard if you study well and go to lectures, you dont need the textbook at all.
Dr. Poole is an amazing professor! He is what got me hooked on molecular biology. I can understand the subject and type of learning required may not be everyone's cup of tea, but Dr. Poole make it way easier with dad jokes, demonstrations, and straightforward multiple choice tests. He clearly knows a lot and cares about his students.
Dr. Poole is very amazing and his lectures are very interesting. He does let anyone ask questions so some people may not like all the questions but just be respectful. You must study for this class, ask the TAs for help on confusing topics. Get a good study group and you should be great.
I can't say enough about Dr. Poole; he is an absolutely fabulous teacher. He is hilarious, straightforward, and very lecture-dependent. Know what's on his slides and what he says during class and you'll be fine. He hardly ever even references the textbook.
Professor Poole was the best! He was super funny and taught really well. I understood the concepts and I didn't even have to read the textbook! He was super chill and cared about our learning more than assignments. Most of the assignments were to help us better understand material. He was one of the best teachers I've had and super easy.
He likes the class to be discussion-based, which is great until there are specific students who like to ask a question every 5 minutes. Felt like we didn't finish the material for the day very often. He is great though, very knowledgeable and passionate. HW due after every class period, usually took me about 10-15 mins. Tests are not too bad.
I can't say this enough times, but Dr. Poole is the BEST. He really cares that his students understand hard concepts, and has thought of cool ways to break them down/explain them. He is more than willing to answer questions in and outside of class and never makes you feel stupid for asking. He loves his job and his field, and will help you love bio
The whole class was kind of meh. Super dry humor, but made class more interesting. He switched the exams halfway through the semester, which I felt made a disconnect between his lesson plans and content on the exams. But overall not a hard class to deal with. Don't bother going to lectures, all exams are open notes. Heavy weighted though
Dr. Pool was great. He always spent time answering students' questions. This class was about 75% exams, 16% essays, and the rest were easy pre-class quizzes. If you aren't a strong test taker or writer, this class may not be for you. Tests are open-note, but they are semi-difficult. You have to work for your grade. Lots of extra credit.
Dr. Poole is a solid choice, his lectures are amazing and he is a very caring person. This class has a lot of material and the grading is heavily dependent on the tests, but there is no busy work or stupid assignments, you just have to study and understand the material and you will be fine! Dr. Poole is a great choice for MMBIO 240!!
Dr. Poole was so FUNNY! His class would soar by so quickly! The tests were pretty simple and for us it was open notes. I never had to worry about my grade in this class and every lecture was a JOY!
Doctor Poole knows his subject really well but I feel he doesn't deliver it well. He posts his slides, but there isn't very much information on them so you can't really find answers to questions on them. He didn't give a lot of context on topics that we covered. He would just jump into a complicated process without explaining what we are learning.
Dr. Poole was a good professor for MMBIO 240. I had no idea what was going on the entire semester and I still passed. He changed his exams this past semester to be open book, note, internet, etc. Participation is not mandatory and the book is not needed at all. A few mini papers which aren't bad and surprisingly a decent amount of extra credit.
Dr. Poole is phenomenal. Breaks down complex ideas and concepts and makes them understandable for any level of understanding. Would highly recommend him as he has been very accomodating with COVID and thorough.
Don't even hesitate if you have the chance to take his class. He's super funny, super understanding, and super knowledgeable. He explains things super well and answers all the questions people have. Very reasonable tests. The class isn't easy, but an A is totally doable. Just do the homework assignments, come to class, and study for exams.
Take this class from Dr. Poole! His tests are incredibly straightforward and literally come straight from the slides. His lectures are entertaining and informative. He takes a ton of questions that are kind of off-topic, so it can feel like he is wasting time. But that is the only downside. The class is easy but teaches everything you need to know.
Learned a lot about immunology and virology. Dr. Poole was very chill and its an easy A if you put in the work
This was an easy A as long as you read the learning objectives and follow along in the class. I enjoyed the class and Dr. Poole is such a gifted teacher!
Dr. Poole is hilarious and explains everything really well. Sometimes it's hard to understand his slides because they're pretty sporadic but I got away with not studying until 1-2 days before the tests and they were all fairly easy A's. Pray that you have a good ta and memorize their test reviews, and you'll easily get an A.
Really wants students to do well, very approachable, good test prep materials. Teaches difficult concepts well, and very interactive in class. Super good at answering questions and keeping students engaged. GO TO CLASS because he expounds on the limited info on his slides.
While attendance wasn't required, all of the exam material comes from the lecture learning objectives. If you come to class and take good notes and study based on the learning objectives you will do well in the course. He doesn't use or require the textbook. But most importantly, he is such a fun and caring professor. He loves the stuff he teaches.
Dr. Poole is awesome! I loved lecture every week. He loves what he teaches and makes lecture interactive and hilarious. Tests are completely based off his lectures, which is nice because you don't have to read the textbook, but you must go to class. Your grade is based completely off of tests and minipapers. Use the practice tests to study!
The best professor for MMBIO 240. There are some really hard concepts but he taught things clearly! His key objectives/optional h.w. were a little disorganized, but one TA saved us with his test reviews. Tests cover a bit and are 75% of your grade so study in advance. Don't put off the mini papers and study the midterms before taking the final.
Taught memorization and then tested on application. No study guide or clear testing guidelines or expectations. Very smart man though.
Loved Doctor Poole. His tests require a good handle on the topics but they aren't too bad, very fair to what was taught in lectures. Review his practice tests before class and use the TAs!
He knows how to make learning about viruses fun. It's pretty straight forward, all exam questions will be on the slides and TA reviews were a big help. Really not to bad if you study.
The textbook is mandatory for quizzes and will provide lots of details necessary for the tests. He is an amazing instructor who makes lectures both entertaining and educational. This is my favorite class that I have taken at BYU.
I rented the textbook, and never read it. It may be useful if it's challenging for you. His exams are based on the objectives covered in lecture. He is super engaging and makes protein synthesis interesting and fun (a hard task). The minipapers are challenging to write but great tools for studying. I recommend studying the practice test/optional hw
I loved Professor Poole's class! It was so much fun and made me love learning about diseases! He teaches very clearly and his textbook is very easy to read. Homework is just reading a short textbook chapter and then doing an open-note quiz for each class. Super easy. His tests weren't too bad either, just require a lot of memorization.
Take this class from Dr. Poole. He is super funny and so knowledgeable. If you go to class, take good notes, and study well for the tests you'll do great. The tests are worth a lot of credit, but with little homework, there is a lot of room to study. The textbook isn't needed.
One of my favorite professors of all time. I've taken both molecular bio and infections&immunity from him and he is by far the best option for both. He's a very simple teacher, just know the slides and youre good! Also, im not one to care for teachers being funny but the dude has the driest humor and its hilarious. I tell all my friends to take him
Prof Poole is such a fun professor and so intelligent! The class itself is pretty difficult though, which I didn't expect. Go to the TA help labs to study for the tests. Do well on the essays because it will help pad your grade. Don't make my mistake and think you can get away with studying just definitions of stuff, know the processes too.
Best and easiest class I've taken at BYU. Dr. Poole and Dr. Lane Fischer co-teach it (Poole teaches about different genetic disorders, Fischer teaches counseling skills). It's a fascinating class and the counseling skills are super helpful even if you don't become a genetic counselor. Absolute 15/10 class. I will recommend it to literally everyone
I am a senior at BYU. I took multiple of his classes. He was my favorite professor. If you have the opportunity to take him, do it! It is thanks to him that I learned how I studied. Great professor!
Dr. Poole is my most favorite professor I've ever had here at BYU. He is brilliant & hilarious and makes really challenging topics easy to learn. He uses a lot of demonstrations in class to teach challenging concepts. These concepts are taught mainly in the lectures and aren't on the slides so it's important to attend class. 10/10 would take again!
Dr. Poole is really nice and you can tell that he puts in a lot of work to try and make his lectures engaging. However, his class is entirely lecture dependent, but his lectures are very confusing. His slides are reused so they don't make a lot of sense. Exams are heavily weighted. When studying for his exams, be prepared to teach yourself.
Super chill class; no homework and no textbook or readings. You need to do well on the minipapers (there are 4) and exams (3) to do well in the class. He gives practice exams to study with that help a lot. There is a decent amount of memorization but you also have to be able to understand how the processes work to do well in the class.
Super passionate and engaging during lectures! He makes it easy to succeed as long as you take notes and do good studying. 3 exams plus final, all in testing center multiple choice. 4 minipapers, one is a video. Records lectures to watch later. Has great practice tests!
Material was not hard at all, watching a few quick YouTube videos was enough to clear up any confusion I had. However, his lectures were often very confusing and very fast paced. LOTS of extra credit on exams, often curved up 4% on each one. Very, very caring guy but his lectures were just all over the place and hard to keep up with.
Dr. Poole is the MAN! 261 is straightforward. I hardly put any time in until it was time to take exams, and I headed into the final with a 100 (due in large part to the massive amount of extra credit he offers). The TA reviews were helpful and he provides practice exams for the midterms that helped a ton too. Super kind and an entertaining lecturer
Dr. Poole is a great professor. His tests go exactly with his slides and he wants students to succeed. Lectures can be hard to follow, but the general concepts are what he tests on. The class is VERY test-heavy but doable. Molecular biology is tough, but Poole made it enjoyable!
Dr Poole is so unintentionally funny and it makes his lectures super engaging. The concepts are hard, but that's just how molecular biology is. No homework, but exams/papers are worth a ton of points. His learning objectives tell you what you need to know for the exam, and his sample exams follow pretty closely with the real exams so those help.
Dr. Poole is awesome. His test reviews are cool, cause he doesn't prep anything but can answer questions thrown at him. That being said, come prepared with questions! He takes the time DURING class to make sure everyone understands the concepts instead of rushing through like other teachers do. He has "mini papers" that are just regular papers.
Dr. Poole was a really fun professor, but he was not super helpful outside of class. His tests are all reused from previous years, despite the textbook no longer being required. Questions were often confusing and about things that we never discussed in class. Really engaging and interesting lectures though!
Favorite professor at BYU. He cares about you understanding material & makes his lectures engaging. Never full 2 hours to go through material, doesn't feel rushed & allows as many questions as needed. Tests are very fair, he posts old tests up to review to prepare for upcoming tests. Extremely workable & will do whatever he can to help you succeed!
Tests are worth a big portion of your grade but he gives you old tests from past years to study and basically uses the same questions. Didn't put in a ton of time and still managed an A. Take 240 from him!
Pretty good class overall. A few "mini papers" that helped prepare for the exams, exams, and a group project. Daily quizzes to do before class that add up. Lectures were sometimes kind of confusing the first time through, but he usually records them for you to go back and watch. Reasonable amount of work. Know the practice exams inside and out.
Prof Poole is awesome. the material isn't always fun or entertaining but Poole has an amazing sense of humor that makes lectures enjoyable. there were 3 midterms and 3 papers and that was really all we got graded on. if you have to take 240, take it from Poole and no one else!
Professor Poole's lectures can be engaging, but the material is quite challenging. Rely on his sample tests and tools like Unstuck study alongside the textbook to succeed. Mandatory attendance helps, and the grading is reasonable if you put in the work.
Many students find Dr. Poole to be an engaging lecturer. He spends a large portion of class answering questions which can be annoying if you already understand the content/don't learn that way. Fortunately every lecture was recorded which was nice. All MC tests, not too bad, questions fairly based on objectives.
Attend lectures and pay attention, you will do just fine in his class. He also has all of his lectures recorded, but it's better to come in person because if you have questions, he makes plenty of time for students to ask and clarify anything they don't understand. His tests are based on what he teaches and are acurate to what is discused in class.
Dr. Poole is awesome at explaining the concepts and his lectures are SO entertaining. He makes the learning objectives for each lecture clear and the test is based off them. The tests are most of your grade and you do need to study for them, but all the material is taught in class and nothing surprising. I can't recommend him enough!
Dr. Poole cares so much about his students. He tries his best to give everyone the best help possible and takes into consideration their personal circumstances. He's also very responsive when you have questions for him. My grade needed to be fixed, so I emailed him at 11pm and he responded within 6 minutes with the grade corrected.
Super funny and passionate about biology. Pay attention to what he says in lectures and not just what's written on the slides, because he explains it better than the slides. Tests are straightforward and based on the learning objectives, so if you make sure you understand those, you'll be set. He provides a free pdf textbook but I never needed it.
He is so passionate about biology that makes you love his class. He gives time during lectures to ask questions and records them in case you miss them. Attendance is not required. He is easy to reach outside class during his office hours to go over content or answer questions, and offers extra credit. You should definitely take this class from him!
This teacher is amazing. He offers literally every possible resource to help you succeed. He records every lecture so you can go back and watch it. He does completion homework to boost your grade. His tests are the nicest things ever and he offers literally so much extra credit. Your grade and learning is ENTIRELY up to you, which is awesome.
Dr. Poole is a funny guy who loves disease. It felt like MMBIO221 but easier. Two midterms and a final make up 60% of your grade, but he also gives some extra credit. One paper on a pathogen of your choosing, but overall, this class was very good, and I understand a lot more about disease.
Dr Poole is the only teacher you need to take for molecular biology. This is his bread and butter and he teaches it so well. Incredibly easy class because he covers the material so clearly. He's also absolutely hilarious. I heard so many nonchalant one-liners during the semester and his demonstrations are both entertaining and helpful.
Dr. Poole is so epic. He is funny and entertaining. He has like no homework and all his slides have "Learning Objectives" and he only tests you on those. There is a super chill group project and that's pretty much it. Wish my Cell Bio class was like this.
Dr. Poole is the best! This was one of my favorite classes by far, he made all of his lectures super engaging and easy to follow and explained difficult infection pathways clearly. He's very clear on what's on the final and what you're expected to know. He's also really funny. I wouldn't recommend skipping class because there's some vital stuff.
You don't have to go to lectures or read the textbook to do well in the class, but I recommend going to class because Professor Poole has the best lectures. You can tell he loves what he teaches about!
Actually took him for Univ 101, best prof ever for that class. He's so kind and felt like he was really there for us, he made sure the workload was never too much/too annoying.
