He takes time to explain in baby steps, but that is essentially what this class is for. Very patient and will do anything to help you. Very exigent, knowledgeable, and competent. You will learn what you need to know.
not too much teaching; does not care
I thought he was a great teacher. He is concerned about his students and takes the time to explain assignments and work. He also is not bad to look at and really cares about his work and the subject. Very fair in his grades and does his best but you do have to put out an effort.
He does care, but he is so hard. He was very helpful, and very nice. He was tough on grading, at least with my class. There is extra work that we did that other people from different classes did not have to do.
Mr potter, was a very nice and i think very easy.Although sometings could have been done different. But over all he was great.
I took this as a fast track so it was very intense. I had a lot of questions and he was very helpful in answering my questions. You have to really work hard for an A but he's made a huge difference in my writing in other classes.
cool teacher but very boring talks very slow and explains most material....the class was easy but it was reading so what do you expect.
Mr. Potter is a wonderful teacher but can be a little hard at times if you dont keep up with his work.
Mr. Potter is very soft spoken. Hippie type of teacher. He is really nice. and funny. His class was Hard!I had him for a fast track Intro to lit.from 5pm to 1020pm.We got out of class at 1030 at night. The class was fun.It was the hardest I have ever worked for a B and it was the first B that I got in English.I recommend him but not a blow off class
I really enjoyed Mr Potters class. He is very smart and seems devoted to the writing proces. Iwonder if he has ever wrote a book? penny for your thoughts.
Exams are easy. pay attention to the review. Go to ALL WORKSHOPS.
Very hard to please. Somewhat condescending. Said his class wasn't a literature class. He was wrong. No feedback other than "rewrite, resubmit." When a teacher returns everybody's essay for rewrite/resubmit, something's wrong there.
Writing 1 class. I watched the class slowly dwindle down to only 5 people. Those were the 5 desperate ones who couldn't drop and take a different class. Nice, brilliant guy but taught way above the level of the class. Best suited for very advanced Comp or Literature classes. Made Writing 1 very difficult.
potter is a great teacher and has a lot of knowledge in writing. He is tough on students to help make other classes beyond writing easier. He is a hippie that is cool with me. If your looking for a free grade this is not the class for you. He is very reasonable if he can tell your trying to better yourself.
This guy is above CompII level. He should be teaching in a university and not community college. He does not give anyone a break not matter if you have perfect attendance in his class. :( Beware of you final grade.
Take this guy's literature class. He's brilliant, and if you plan on majoring in English, he's a huge help. His four week class isn't easy and you have to stay the whole time, but there's lots of class discussion and its interesting.
used games and fun group work to keep my interest
I liked the games and fun activities, too. Guy knew his stuff but I don't like writing. Still did OK in class-just had to revise papers.
Can't believe these last two comments--is this even the same guy? Best lit class I've had! Yeah we stayed the whole time, but it was worth it. Prepared me for all the lit classes I took after.
This is definitely not a blow-off class and he will keep you there the entire time. He grades insanely hard. Take notes. I enjoyed the class because I learned a lot but I was super stressed out the whole time thinking I was going to drop my gpa.
Very wide-ranging discussion. Very cool. Instructor highly knowledgeable, easy to work with. Definitely recommend.
At first I thought he was hard. Then I realized he gives his best and expects the best in return. It turned out to be a really helpful class. And it gave me a boost up when I took Comp1.
Brilliant teacher. Class discussions make the class, but he uses everything to help teach you. The work load was heavy for a night class, 1 day a week, but it was also my favorite class, and will miss the brainstorming leadership he offered every time. Great experience, highly recommend, but not a blow off class, plenty of work to complete.
While he's a very nice and helpful teacher, he gives you way too much work for the time allotted, and expects them all to be "up to his level". He holds you until the end of class, often rambling about topics not associated with the class at all.
The fact that my textbook arrived near the end of class hindered me. However, Mr. Potter did his best to inform and educate me. I agree that he assigns a stressful amount of written assignments for a night/fast track class. However, I found him very enlightening. I have always been partial to literature; obviously he knows and loves his subject.
Great class. Recommend. Major, non-major. Interesting discussions, not overloaded. Fast Track means "fast" but totally do-able.
I really liked him as a teacher and he has done Wonderful work. He is very helpful, But I do not like how you have to wait for a grade, instead of receiveing them all at one time. It doesn't really help you on the way, If your not sure how your doing in the class.
Best lit teacher ever.
I took it once a week for 3 hrs a class which is great as it gives you a week to do homework which is a fair amount. This is not however an easy A class you need to show up and apply yourself. My major issue is he does not provide grades through the semester, I got my first one week 13. This leaves you wondering how you are doing overall.
Brian was a fair teacher and willing to help if you asked for it. If you had trouble he offered suggestions, on how to do better. This is no easy "A" Class - You have to work for your grade
I have been at TCC for 4 years and have never had a professor be rude about assignments like he did. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM. He grades papers like you need to be writing like you have a masters degree in Literature! Nothing is ever good enough and doesn't give good feedback. He doesn't grade assignments in a timely manner at all.
He was nice when I asked for help and feedback. However.. that's the issue, you have to ask for feedback on papers. He's very intelligent, but I could never make a correlation with his lectures and the material. A little condescending as well. . But a good guy. Very spacial. . Would like to see more organization. He doesn't use bb
All of Mr. Potters lectures have to do with the main subject and all key together. Mr. Potter is understanding, lenient and has no problem giving help to those who ask. If you are looking for a mindless, easy and educationally pointless class, then this isn't the class for you! He can be a strict Professor, but nothing that isn't already expected!
easy and clear class, if you wanna good grade you gotta work for it tho. Help was available whenever i needed it. Verry nice, calm guy with a good sense of humor do what he asks for in the cyllabus and you should be fine.
This guy was a condescending rude know-it-all. He was not helpful what so ever. He doesn't even tell you the grade you have until the last day. He is lazy and forces his bicycling ways down his students throat. One of the worst teachers I have ever had. TCC needs to remove this guy ASAP. Do not take this man for anything.
This man is a worthless teacher to be quite honest. He gives you way too much work for the time allotted, and expects them all to be "up to his level". He holds you until the end of class, often rambling about topics not associated with the class at all. Do not take
He gives really unclear instructions, does not give good feedback, grades way too hard, is not helpful at all, made me buy a textbook that I never had to use, rarely answers emails, and overall the worst online class experience I've ever had. This is coming from an English major who excels at reading and writing. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Some of my classmates were rly horrible students. They didnt get one past this guy. I worked very hard and got a B. Now I feel mor confident going into Fresh Comp.
Writing is a challenge. I learned so much this semester. What to do, what not to do. I feel better about going to higher level classes.
Brit Lit rocks! Really fascinating.
British Literature--loved this class. Not at all what I expected.
Prof Potter spent a lot of time commenting on my papers and offering feedback, both positve and negative. I realy appreciated those notes. They helped me become a better writer.
Professor Potter is very difficult. If you don't have time to die to homework, you're probably going to need to pick a different teacher. He's a very tough grader for most of the semester but gives decent final grades. Just try very very hard and participate verbally in class and you're golden. He won't give feedback until the end of the semester.
I wanted to become a better writer. This was the class to take. Mr. Potter did not waste my time and his process works.
I'm just okay at literature, but this class really helped me. The prof offered lots of comments on my work and plenty of resources. His lectures were smart and funny.
Professor Potter was impersonal, was weeks/ months late in grading assignments, and was extremely disorganized. If not for what I knew from high school, I would not have passed this class. Over half of the students dropped out. I learned how to guess my way through unclear assignments and how to use his last-minute feedback in my prepared essays.
Online classes have always been tricky, and intro to lit is no exception. I accidentally sighed up for the 8 week class and with 5 other classes--it was brutal. I didn't flunk, but the workload was a lot. He doesn't give encouraging comments, least none that I ever got. So it can sometimes feel like your lost and unsure how to improve your work.
If I had known how difficult Potter was beforehand, I wouldn't have taken his class. He took forever to reply to emails, and when he did, he was rude and short with me. He took forever to grade papers, so you basically don't know where you stand in the class all semester. He graded very harshly on papers, and makes you feel stupid.
Grades papers like you are a professional. All of my papers I never got better than a C grade on. He rambles on things that do not have anything to do with the work. I WOULD NOT TAKE HIM AGAIN.
He constantly goes off on tangents that don't connect with the lesson. If you miss one class might as well not show up for the rest of the semester.
Lectures well, but has a tendency to go off on tangents and can come off condescending at times. He takes forever to grade assignments, and grades as if you're a professional. His instructions are fairly clear, but the course is rigorous, and if you don't have time to sit down and plan essays out you'll be lucky to get out with a B.
I really appreciate him opening the new door for me. I think it was decent amount of homework. I learned a lot from him. It was a little hard to catch up in his class and the assignments at first but his lecture/feedback always makes sense and logical. He spared a lot of his time every time I asked questions. I would take his class again.
Best English professor ever, Very thoughtful. An easy A. Take this class if you want become a better writer.
He is very funny. I would take him again.
You would not waste your time on his class. I wanted to become a better writer. I learned a lot from his class.
I'm not sure why he has a 3.5 when he deserves a 5.0. He's a wonderful professor and as long as you do the work .
He is very smart, very knowledgeable and easy with the homework. And he was generous when it came down to curving test grades.
Mr. Potter is very good teacher. You do have to study, but he cares. He knows the material and will give you extra help if you want.
Great professor. He is ALWAYS willing to help no matter what. He is definitely one of the best English professors that TCC has to offer.
Lots of reading, naturally as it is a Brit Lit class. Lots of papers, but most of them don't get graded until the end of semester. Meaning you don't get feedback on your work and what you should fix (from your professor) until its all said and done with. You do get feedback from your peers, this is mandatory. Overall, its a mostly enjoyable class.
Mr. Potter is a ridiculously hard grader. He grades based on HIS interpretations of the works of literature. He is terrible at responding. There were several occasions where I asked a question pertaining to an assignment due in a few days and got no response. I ended up having to submit the assignments.
Very bad professor in TCC. Never take his classes..
Very bad professor
He is a tough grader and rude.
Mr. Potter is very good teacher, but you do have to study. lazy students should NOT take his class.
He is willing to help if you ask . I think it was decent amount of homework, but I learned a lot from him. He has good sense of humor.
This is a difficult class, however, if you do what he tells you to do you can pass easily. He is nice and smart.
This professor has very entertaining lectures and chose great reading material, I would not recommend taking his class online though and especially not over the summer like I did. I was completely unprepared for the workload and I think I would have benefited greatly from taking his class in person.
Bad Professor
Professor Potter is a very tough grader and I didn't enjoy the class like I was hoping to. Now I will give him some credit, as he seems to be a solid teacher, but I would recommend taking this class in-person. I feel that it would be much more helpful. Don't take this over the summer.
DO NOT TAKE!!! A horrible professor!
This was definitely the hardest class I have ever taken. Although I learned a lot, I was stressed the entire time (probably because it was his first taught 8 week course.) He could be very funny at times but he was lowkey mean. I think I would've enjoyed it more if the class wasn't so crammed ( as an 8 week course). But he does give good feedback
Honestly this was the hardest class I have ever taken. He did not respond to emails, he did not grade papers in time which made us as students late for papers. He blamed anything he did wrong on the student. I would NEVER choose this professor ever again.
He posts feedback, but AFTER due dates. Then he is rude about not following his directions in feedback. I had completed multiple other parts before he would get back with feedback. I would have to change everything and then have my paper be late. He is very condescending and I have learned nothing in my class, except how much I dislike him.
Although i did not do that well in his class, i will be fair. He is a very tough grader and i think the way he teach isn't for people who is weak at the subject and looking to improve. However if you are looking to become a better writer or anything in the same field, i think he can make you better through his critiques.
I cannot express how much I would not recommend taking Comp 1 with this man. He does not make the lesson plan available, he will post assignments without informing any students, he will make said assignments due the next day or sometimes the day of, and if he does not agree with a topic you have chosen he will be very criticizing.
Professor Potter is too hard. He should not be teaching this class. He grades things pending on his interpretations, and he rarely answers back to emails. He also gives a HEAVY workload and tends to change due dates of things at random and does not give any heads up or warning.
I would not recommend this professor. Doesn't grade essays or homework and give feedback until it's too late. Lots of busy work. Didn't reply to my emails. He says he is lenient in the beginning but he is not.
Professor Potter is not clear with his instructions, and grades you hard for not doing things right, even though he never told you how. His emails don't match up with what is on the Blackboard. He treats you as if this is the only class you're taking, and like it is the most important thing in your life. Don't take this class if you want a 4.0.
Honestly, this was by far the worst class I have ever taken. We have been done with this class for two weeks and over half of my assignments have not been graded. If you take this class, make sure you're perfect and its the only class you are taking if you are a straight A student. Professor is very, very picky about everything.
There was a lot of busy work and it took a while for assignments to be graded. He does not explain somethings clearly and his responses are not very helpful at times. But, there are a lot of opportunities for extra credit and revisions, which made it easier to get an A. To get an A in this class you have to be really on top of everything.
If you are willing to apply yourself to what is being taught, be prepared to learn. If you want to skate by through classes and do the minimum amount of work possible, this class is NOT for you. Pay attention, KEEP UP WITH THE WORK, and take notes. The best experience is in person. I was unprepared for the work, as this was my first college class.
Does not give you assignment due dates in advance. Uploads new assignments that are due within a day or two, with no notification. Must check class online at least twice a day to see if there are new assignments Would not take again.
First things first, the man is just disrespectful, I could literally sense the disdain in his emails. He never graded papers on time, some most assignments were graded after class ended, turns in rough drafts back to you a day before the final draft. If he forgets to grade one of your assignments, forget it, would not recommend to my worst enemy.
This guy is a complete jerk! Do NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He was unprofessional, rude, and frankly, not what a student requires of a "teacher". He is a dictator that blasts demands with little to no explanation on assignments. I had to call his supervisor and file a complaint on his lack of ability to "teach".
I had way to many problems with this professor, I had to go to the Head of English to get him to respond to one of my 8 emails I had sent. He was extremely rude and unprofessional. He will not grade you papers if you made any kind of mistake in the doc name. His instructions are never fully clear and he try to help you if you are struggling.
Lazy, would not recommend. Dont expect feedback or help when you need it
Class is pretty confusing. There are assignments posted from previous classes, instructions for class are unclear. It seems like assignments are posted whenever he feels like it and there isn't much that tells you there is a new assignment. Wouldn't recommend.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! Board of directors has been contacted multiple times about him and he still is terrible. HE IS RUDE RUDE RUDE!!! You will not make an A, he will say literally SOMETHING BAD about every single thing you do even if you were to use his own work. Grades don't get put in at all and emails rarely get responded to. SAVE YOURSELF!!
Professor Potter is an awful professor. He assigns about 3 essays a week. Some are one to two page papers which isnt bad but if you take other classes it makes it difficult. He is a tough grader and doesnt give feedback on what you are doing wrong. He grades your work and then give no explanation. He never answers his emails. DONT TAKE WITH HIM!
very hard and the teacher is rude in his feedback
This dude leaves the most arbitrary grades ever. The directions to assignments are all over the place. He wants us to read a ton, which you don't really need to do, but no one would have that amount of time. He says to do one thing in this pdf but another in that pdf. Minor issues get you a 50% or worse. He'll give you a 2/10 and leave no comment.
This is my last year. I've never had an issue with any other professor or staff member. HE IS VERY RUDE! I took his rudeness with his jokes, until he belittled my major. Kept us 10 mins late talking about nothing relevant. Asked for the textbook title twice & he didn't go over it. He also curses a lot. We're adults, but still weird. Withdrawable.
He grades us based on his opinions on the material. Why ask us what we believe, if what we believe is wrong because it does not match his interpretation of the material. Grades are based on structure and formatting as much as having an original idea. When you ask questions you may get an answer, such as go ask the tutors. Why do we pay his salary?
I have never had a more unprofessional and unpleasant instructor. He randomly uploads assignments with no clear schedule and loves to give a 0 for the tiniest things such as not doing the writing block like he wants or not double spacing. You will not receive any constructive criticism from this Mr Potter only insults which the whole class can see
The absolute worst professor at TCC. Rude and disrespectful. I don't know why they allow him to teach classes at a college that is supposed to welcome everyone. He does not care about you and wants you to fail. Terrible! Find someone else!
If you expect to blow through this class with little effort and receive a decent grade, youre mistaken. Mr. Potter is a great, but incredibly challenging professor. If you are a dual enrollment student like me, you may run into some difficulties. Keep up with the work, read EVERYTHING, and dont expect to get it all right on the first try.
For each essay you have to submit your prewriting, outline, rough draft, etc. This is more time-consuming, but he gives great detailed feedback before you submit the final draft. We also have to give a 6-8 minute speech w/ Powerpoint about our final essay which feels a little pointless, and the last thing I need during finals week is extra work
I wouldn't recommend taking this course... This had a HEAVY/DIFFICULT class load as an incoming freshman Comp 1 class. Personally, I didn't learn anything while taking this course. I struggled a ton to get through the class, and finished with the highest grade in my class: an 80.
Worst class I have EVER taken. He is so rude and disrespectful in his feedback. He ridicules you and makes you feel stupid. If you are not writing a professional and perfect essay. Dont expect anything above a C. He takes forever to grade, he gives you so much busy work. I have spent my semester stressing out over his class. Worst. Teacher. Ever.
Professor Potter was my first completely online teacher. While this may lead to more biased views on my behalf, what I have to say about Potter is that he is overwhelmingly discriptive in his communication. Whether it be through email, assignments, critical analysis, or just banter, he would often have lengthy descriptions for work/misc topics.
Potter was rude, and his instructions were so hard to read. He grades like you have a PDHD, don't take this class in the summer unless you want a 40hr+ commitment. I had no social life this summer because of this class.
I never had a problem with Potter being rude. However, he isn't teaching at Harvard and I felt like I was expected to be at that level. Do not take this as a summer class unless you want no social life. I have never been as stressed and lost so much sleep. If you are very disciplined and this subject comes easily to you, then Potter is your man!
If given the opportunity to choose another professor I would recommend doing that. He rarely had clear requirements and directions for assignments. He grades more on format than content. He causes great amounts of unnecessary stress by having random due dates and times. He puts in grades before the due dates and oftentimes does not leave comments.
Gets off track, doesn't grade with his own grading scale, and does not work with students despite the fact that some students have scheduling issues. He's a great guy don't get me wrong, however, there are students paying for this class out of pocket or using loans and he doesn't use his class time wisely to teach or help those who have questions.
Literally the worst professor I have EVER had. Do not take him as a teacher.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. The worst class ever! He never responds to emails, ALWAYS late to class every morning. Please take another teacher if you actually want to learn.
The current semester isn't over yet but I have to say that so far this is a terrible class. He expects you to write your essays based on formatting from Harvard and his instructions aren't entirely understandable. If you wish to contact him, make sure you're ready to wait a few days because he never answers when you need it.
I regretted taking his class. Unless you are a scholar in the making, it will really be difficult. He is not a terrible person, but the way he teaches is expectant of a master writer. There are a ton of papers, no schedule and some assignments are made from thin air, be super careful of due dates. Grades rough and extremely slow, anxiety filled.
he doesn't respond to emails, grades last minute or not on time, rude and condescending. I asked him for help and he said "google it" and sent me a google link of my question to him.... He doesn't take the time to help anyone. How he is still teaching is beyond me. do not have him as your teacher, skip the class if you have to. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Do not take this class unless you are ready to give up all of your free time. He assigns absurd amounts of homework that he can't even keep up with. He does not respond to emails so asking for help is no good either. If the format isn't exact it's an automatic 0. My class had about 20 students and ended with around 5 or 6. Save yourself the stress!
His lectures are very long and most of the time don't relate to the essays at all. His due dates are set at very inconvenient times, so watch out for those. His grading is BRUTAL, he cares more about format than content.
I would ALWAYS choose the professor again. It was my favorite class. He appears strict but really just wants you to do your work and put effort into it. Great discussions, great human.
The worst teacher I have ever had, is EXTREMELY rude whenever he responds to any of my emails asking questions, and cares way more about format than the actual essay. Toughest grader I have ever had too, I'm currently struggling to pass this class with a 61% and we have a week left of school. DO not everrrrrr take this teacher.
Professor Potter is though, but you will learn a lot. I think he is a good professor that will prepare you for future English clases.
Takes ages to grade assignments, grades assignments that shouldnt be for a large grade other than completion such as notes taken for essays and the feedback provided for assignments are very necessary for completing the next assignments, but there isnt feedback until the first assignment is graded usually a day before the due date of the second.
As of writing this it is Oct 11, and there are a couple assignments from August that have yet to be graded. His layout of blackboard and how he does journal entries for writing projects is confusing and annoying. His lectures rarely have to do with the topic at hand. Can't wait for this semester to end.
First of all, uses lecture time inefficiently. Second, Blackboard is confusing as heck! Lastly, too focused on the format. He's a cool dude but I wouldn't recommend him.
Just a bully is all I have to say, does not know how to give good feedback- only has bad things to say and nothing good. I have taken other lit and comp classes and have done fairly well and gotten good, critical feedback but not Potter. Condescending and gives no clear instructions !! DO NOT TAKE
ATTENTION FRESHMEN!!!!! DO NOT TAKE ANY OF BRIAN POTTER'S CLASSES. Save yourself the trouble. Potters class is the worst educational experience I have EVER had. DO NOT TAKE. The class average is a FAILING GRADE. It is the last week of the semester and I have multiple large ungraded assignments. I have busted my @SS for this class and may not pass
I had to withdraw this class after the first quiz because I had absolutely no instruction on what i was supposed to be writing and neither did anyone sitting next to me. There are so many better comp 1 and 2 professors at TCC take ANYONE ELSE!!
He is very picky If he likes your paper you'll do good if he doesn't you'll get an F. It's up to his personal preference. He's test heavy and isn't a very good teacher at all. he's unorganized and really not a good teacher. I cant express that part enough.I started out with 20 some students in the class by the time I withdraw there was 5-7. (RUN).
