Easy A, don't buy the reader (650 pages, $70, didn't read much of it, just share w/someone). Liked the prof at the start till I realized he was terrible, didn't help at all and just preached his bias and arrogance at us lecture. Go for an A, skip lecture.
lectures are repetitive and fairly pointless, generally fairly entertaining to listen to, passionate about topic, but really just not a lot of point in attending lecture, not much work for the class
This guy is nuts. He is really boring and he yaks a lot about nothing. His lectures are SO pointless, and his assignments have no relevance to his lectures. But one thing is for sure, this class is real easy. I recommend it, because it is super easy.
Very condescending in office hours, interesting topics, tends to ramble on and on and loses your attention. overall, an OK class.
I took the class over the summer in '04. I disagree with the other comments, Prof. Powers has not been condecending in office hours. His lectures are interesting and he's a fair prof. I learned a lot from him, although he does go off topic at times.
He's extremely liberal--if you're conservative, you may not like his lectures (see other comments). He's very nice, sincere, helpful, and uberintelligent. People tend to really like his class, or hate it. I suggest you find out for yourself.
Professor Powers is very dedicated to his topics and did an excellent job using relevant topics for discussion. The class is based on two take-home essays and one in-class essay final, which is nothing for 4 units. I highly recommend!
If I could have poked out my eye with my pen, I would have. Talk about singleminded and full of bias. Don't take this class if you like to hear things said honestly and not be forced to regurgitate someone else's skewed view of the world.
I agree, Powers is insanely biased. He's very narrow minded, thinks that his beliefs are absolute, and if you go against him, he will be just tell you that you're wrong. End of story. On top of that, he rambles practically every lecture. It's no wonder why I leave class angry every day. Pointless.
He's the best professor ever! His lectures and assignments are easy. You'll be glad you took his class although he is a little strange.
easiest class at cal, so take it
very motivated and enthusiastic about topic but didn't have structured lectures
His lectures are extremely disorganized. You don't get anything out of going because he's just rambling about his own opinions and EXTREMELY NARROW-MINDED views. Your grade basically depends on the quality of the reader who reads your papers. Easy assignments/class. BUT SO BORING!!!!
in a nutshell, this guy degrades our fine institution, period
Pretty easy class--depends on the reader you get. Take home final was a bit of work though. But a boring class I have to admit for the very same reasons already mentioned--disorganized & rambling lectures. I wouldn't recommend anyone take this class since you don't get anything out of it.
Powers is by far the worst professor I've had at Berkeley. He is a very biased man, something that shows in all of his lectures and when he basically taunts everyone after they comment in class. He makes his assignments more complicated than writing a thesis. Soc 3AC is pretty easy, though.
stupid class
THIS CLASS RUINED MY GPA. Supposedly easy, but the reader grades hard...Take it if u want a B, hard to get an A if ur reader's hard. Shouldnt' have taken it. hated it
Don't take this class unless you have to. It's not difficult, but the prof babbles on and on in class, so it's just not enjoyable. Grade = 3 essays, the final is take home.
i heard it was easy but it really depends on who your reader is... so it might actually be harder than you think. i guess some topics were interesting but most of it was boring and his lectures were not fun to listen to.
Rising fees, minority underrepresentation, less spaces... the UC system has a lot of problems, but none like Brian Powers. This insane man rambles on and on about nothing. If you try to take notes, you find that there is really nothing to write. You will learn nothing. Worst teacher ever.

Pompous ****. Loves to hear the sound of his own voice.

stupid class
it can be summed up in two words: STAY AWAY
This fool is the most nonsensical lunatic you will ever meet. in an AC class where the point is to get a 4.0 to boost your GPA, he thinks that B's are the golden standard and only a handful are given A's. His voice is painfully annoying, but im sure you and your friends will have a blast imitating
this class is really easy. i didnt even go to class and still got an A. just do well on those essays!
definitely not hard, but just like every one of the other humanities classes at berkeley, it depends on your reader, and most of them are pretty stingy with the A's. kind of annoying because others are getting better grades for no reason. hes not such a bad guy, as long as you dont take him too seriously

He should find a new approach to teaching. The man is teaching a class that has the potential to be very powerful; the subject is an important one to know about, but no one wants to learn from someone so pompous. Not a hard class AT ALL, just try to shut his voice out. Poor execution of lectures.
The guy is crazy, runs and jumps around the room like a lunatic, and a crazy socialist. The concepts are very easy though and you don't have to go to class, just do well on the papers and you're set.
I could not STAND this guy!! I wouldn't go to lecture for long periods of time, & come back feeling like a didn't miss a thing. I actually ended up dropping his class because I didn't learn anything and he irritated the HELL outta me

taking the class this moment but i should have looked at the ratings beforehand. He really is annoying and boring. His lectures are unclear because he doesn't even seem to know what he's talking about or where he's going in lecture. It would be a good sleeper class but his high-pitched nasally voice prevents people from sleeping.
i cant believe this guy teaches! he should find another job. however, class was easy but its funny how the reader was HUGE to make his class seem hard hahahaha :)
This guy is DOPE! One of the best professors I have ever had! A lot of people do not like him because he makes you think. His classes are all about examining your society and being introspective about it. You can take him for a babbling idiot, but every year there are many students who take the class seriously and get a lot out of it. If you want to learn, take the class. If it is all about an A, then do not.
Don't bother going to lecture. He talks around points for the entire hour. He really likes adjective and adverbs (especially one's that he coins himself) and his sentences are chalk full of them so you never really know what he's talking about in the first place.
Powers' voice annoyed me. He whines and blames social inequalities on YOU for the entire lecture. Does little to guide you on papers. I began missing lecture and still came out okay, so spare yourself the misery and just do well on the papers to survive his horrible course.
he means well but his lectures are pointless. plus he's such a flake - never shows up for office hours, never responds to emails, etc. if you need the class though, its really easy so its not that bad.
Very poor and sad excuse of a professor. This guy is ridiculous. He does not teach you a single thing. Be prepared to teach yourself. All you do in this class is write paper after paper after paper. Lame and ineffective teacher. Also, he is very arrogant and egotistical. If he does not agree with you, he will put you down. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
What a quack. You can't get anything out of it, even if you care about the subject. Easy B+ or A-, harder for an A. Be prepared to regurguiate his socialist/leftist garbage on papers. I'm a liberal guy but this is the only unabashedly leftist class I've attending in berkeley.
Easy A. Just go to lecture and then write whatever he says in your papers. He is OVER THE TOP Liberal, so if you have a problem with that, you'll probably get sick of his whining. I found it entertaining now and then, but he wasn't helpful at all. Advice: whatever he says- Agree with him!!!
Brian Powers seems to know what he is talking about, but he is clueless when it comes to communicating those ideas to the class. His lectures and assignments are really hard to understand and if you get a bad reader, you're screwed. This class is definitely NOT recommended.
Very interesting topic, but you wont learn a thing from this professor. Reading help with papers, but I stopped reading anyways because it was too much and it doesnt coincide with lecture at all. Very obnoxious lecturer. Write papers based on common sense knowledge you already have. Easy, but useless.
He is not very friendly or helpful, but the class is relatively easy. Just write what he wants to hear on the 2 papers.
annoying, egotistical, unclear essay and exam prompts. readings were almost useless. like the previous poster said, easy to pass if you just use common sense and write what he wants to hear on essays.
Lectures are generally unhelpful (with only a few exceptions) and often contain long digressions. The 4 required papers, including the final, have ambiguous, unclear prompts. All grading is done by readers, and over half the class receives B's (I asked). This is not good for an AC, and you learn surprisingly little despite 600+ pages of reading.
The worst teacher I have had at Cal. He is obnoxious and arrogant, and his lectures address absolutely nothing. He has no command of the room and spends more time discussing Blackboard than he does lecturing on useful material. For some reason, he is always sweaty. Maybe that's why nobody attends his class! Taking his class was a mistake.
One of my favorite professors! He's unclear at times, but speaks very passionately about topics. He teaches broad concepts rather than minor facts and focuses on fleshing out ideas rather than listing them. The projects were really good as learning experiences (rather than proving what you know), too.
This class was truly absurd. It was an upper-division, but we spent more time talking about how to navigate blackboard or what he wants in the assignments than actual information. Every hour had about 5 minutes, if even that, of useful information. I learned nothing. This class was a joke.
These reviews are ridiculous. Everything he says is really EASY to understand and he's great at talking and lecturing. However, whenever I talk to him he does seem egotistical and his bias is over the top. Still, he does the AC thing very well. He debunks your "hard-work elitism" and that's why so many people complain..They overvalue themselves
I felt like the class could have been presented much better. I agree with a review below - we spent so much time looking at BSpace and what to do for the assignments than actually learn. It was one of the only classes I've ever wanted to skip, and that's saying a lot. He was definitely passionate about sociology though.
wished that i hadn't taken the class after a few weeks. out of an hour lecture, he actually only lectured for about 20 minutes and even that was not very organized. he was passionate about sociology but the topics were so random that it was hard to get anything out of the class. pretty hard to get an A.
His lectures are pointless and repetetive, but do make sure you go to at least one lecture prior to each paper (hree of them). Also, black lightning notes would be recommended to get instructions on papers. Grading depends on yor GSI, but a B is guaranteed on virtually any paper. He also cuts people at the beginning of the semester who cut class
he's pretty entertaining if you don't take him seriously...but it gets old.
The reading is really interesting—the class is all about inequality in America, very eye-opening—but Powers is condescending and cocky. He makes exaggerated gestures and statements to get attention, but instead of being endearing, they're just annoying. Lecture can seem pointless because he basically just rants, but he randomly takes attendance.
His lectures are entertaining (perhaps mainly because of the way he talks), but I found it hard to take him seriously. Your grade depends on around 3 essays. Reading all of the required reading is not necessary. Not too hard to get an A.
This prof is terrible. If you like going to lecture and listening to 20mins of info about the papers, over and over again-take this course. The professor hardly ever discusses subject-matter.If you get the $70 reader, you can learn from that, since the professor isn't much help.It doesn't seem like a good intro to soc,if that's what you're looking for.
Professor Powers needs to take a course in how to entertain students and communicate effectively. This is not an awful class to take if you are willing to put in the time (and money!) to get a good grade. The study group is amazing when it comes to papers, but be warned, the readings are dry. Go to lecture, but bring a book to keep you up.
I came into the class, enthusiastic. After the second week,he's like a broken record. I kept on telling myself to get the best out of it, I just couldn't do it. The class will do you good if you have the tenacity to teach yourself. You walk into the two essays blindly and I am still vague about the final. Try to avoid it.
I would definitely not recommend this class to anyone. Don't get me wrong, you do learn some fascinating information but .. from lecture? Not so much. From trying to figure out what he and the readers want? Not so much. From some of the readings - yes. But take another professor and learn it in a better environment.
interesting topic, but he makes it boring. lectures are extremely useless, he goes off topic. reading isn't mandatory, just read articles pertaining to essays. prompts for essays are difficult to grasp. hard to write what the readers want to hear.
I only went to lecture about 20% of the time, I find that when I didn't go to lecture, I didn't miss much. He goes really off topic and though he is very enthusiastic about sociology he really don't know how to teach it. He doesn't go according to syllabus and lecture is very random. His essays/paper prompts are hard to interpret.
The overall content of the class is intriguing. If you can see pass his ego, his constant sweating, and very useless lectures, this guy is great!
terrible lecturer, didnt learn a thing about sociology. grade depends on your gsi reader, i got mary who was a terrible, unhelpful reader and barely scraped a B+ in the class. dont bother, not an easy A like some sucks ups say.
this class was dullsville, USA :( there was no point in going to lecture, after you've heard one you've heard them all. don't waste your time doing the readings, just see what's relevant to your paper and read over that. the class is pretty easy, but it's so boring. the material has potential, but the teacher presents it very poorly.
Professor Powers is really passionate about sociology, but unfortunately, he's not a good teacher. He went off on tangents in most lectures, so going to class wasn't very helpful. The reader has interesting articles, but you only need to skim it for essays. Grade depends on your reader and writing abilities.
This class is extremely boring. I went to lectures at the beginning of the semester and just gave up later on. The paper he asked us to write is relatively easy; however, you have to use a lot of the reading into it, otherwise, he won't give you a high grade. Well, he does not give out easy grade anyways.
lectures completely useless, no need to attend at all. just make sure you go when something's due... he's really rude and when i pointed out he screwed up something online he fixed it and acted like i was stupid... not a good person or teacher, but my essay was done with only an hour of skimming the reading, and i got a b+ fairly easily...
horrible guy, acts like we are alllll stupid, incredibly arrogant and unwilling to accomodate to anyone, not like he grades anything anyways, so who cares about this guy? all he does is ramble.
Powers has made the grave error of confusing opinion with dogmatic truth. Getting a good grade is a matter of figuring out the words that best match his opinion. The lectures do not review the readings or the concepts, and are merely extensions of the ideas presented on day 1 of class. Avoid this professor. Avoid this class. Not an easy A.
I don't understand all of the rants complaining the class was hard. Yes, he's a little arrogant (he went to Hahvahd, it's understandable). The class itself is doable. Just do the readings, make sure you're clear on all the vocab, and the SLC study group helps a lot too! I stoppped going to lectures at the end of the semester; it got repetitive.
Must be interested in the class in order to like it and Professor Powers. I love him! His strength = getting you to think sociologically and to be critical about your original beliefs about the world. Don't take this class if you aren't willing to learn! Must do the readings! He is one of my favorite professors! Really willing to help students out.
Rambled in class, a lot of times could not follow him. Incoherent lecture slides .. not good for someone like me who needs organization to learn
Great teacher and even better lecturer. Has a lot to offer a student, and truly opens your perspective on things!
prof powers always has an open ear to hear how you feel. if you talk to him about postponing an assignment and you give him a good reason to, he will either consider it, or do it! the readings are not necessary to do until he hands out the assignment. it will save you a lot of time if you do the readings after they are assigned.
Paraphrase everything he says and you'll get A's on your papers.
Although this was not a difficult class, Powers was one of the most pompous teachers I have ever had at Cal. Maybe it was his grating voice... Maybe it was the fact that nearly every lecture made me want to drift off or doodle... However, I'll admit that the material he covered was interesting. I just wish the execution had been different.
My friend warned me never to take a class with him but I did anyway. Huge mistake. Not only are his lectures annoying because he has a very distinctive voice, but he is obviously extremely opinionated and biased which comes across in his teaching. Easy to BS the work but trust me, it's not worth it.
Please DO NOT take this class with Powers unless you absolutely have to. The lectures are absolutely pointless and useless. He just talks and talks about nothing. It seems that he just loves to hear the sound of his own voice, which is quite annoying by the way. i would definitely recommend against this class.
Do yourself a favor and do not take this class. Powers rambles in a distinctively annoying voice. You do not get anything out of his lectures but boredom. Your grade consists of a two essays and a take-home final. They're somewhat easy to write (just skim the readings). The prompts show how full of himself he is as they are long & convoluted.
Lectures were useless, Powers is useless - his voice is RIDICULOUS. He literally acts out historical events and oversimplifies them. His directions are incomprehensible, I literally went through prompts and deleted his ramblings to get to the point. Don't take Soc3AC with Powers. It's a shame because material had potential to be interesting.
entire grade based on 3 essays...don't go to class. you spend most of it on bspace and all you really need to do is use the reader for the essays. share it with someone. it's not worth it to buy it just for yourself. your grade really depends on your reader. just try to say what he says. and for the first essay, just make up a person. most do.
this man makes going to class the most unpleasant experience possible. he just talks in circles and makes no sense at all in the end. you do not learn anything in his class
Prof Powers is very passionate about what he teaches. He is exciting to listen to and even more fun to talk to one on one. Go to his office hours and his class will be much more fun. He can be boring sometimes and repeats the same info but it is for emphasis, be open minded and you will enjoy his class.
Professor Powers is arguably one of the nicest professors at UC Berkeley. He has so much respect for his students and he will take the time to talk to you about any topic! He loves to hear about our opinions. Soc 3ac was by far my favorite lower division course. It's a real eye-opener about America & the world. A is possible-work hard & office hrs!
This man drove me crazy. He oversimplifies and generalizes concepts that deserve more time and detail. His constant sarcastic voice & terrible jokes made this class particularly unpleasant. Granted it is an easy class-you have to be brain dead to do poorly. Just remember "Hotel America" & try to incorporate it into your work. Don't take this class.
Honestly, if you have interest in sociology, I recommend avoiding this class as the first soc class you take. He makes the material dry and his lectures are useless. I ended up going to every lecture thinking each one would be better but NO! The class easiness depends on your reader (GSI). This class can be easy, but not for everyone.
Teaching ability is decent mostly learn from texts and doesn't teach a whole lot throughout the class but overall decent teacher just needs to be more helpful with explaining his mistakes.
While Prof Powers can be a bit dull and repetitive (he likes to talk in circles), the material itself is still pretty interesting.
Decided to take Sociology to fill a prereq. Looked like an interesting class. Professor taught in all questions and was rarely helpful, if at all. Tons of required reading and I felt half of it could have been cut. Interesting content, hard class, practically useless professor. Oh, and lecture is required.
Very boring, pretentious prof. He basically goes in circles and talks about the same thing every lecture. His essay prompts are annoyingly long. But it's an easy class. Just be sure to show up to sign in.
he is terrible. he talks in circles about pointless things. class is a total waste of time.
Professor Powers is Great! He is a Brilliant guy who gives some of the clearest lectures I've ever heard. He is animated and makes his lectures amusing. Not that hard. Don't know why anyone wouldn't like him.
HE IS A NICE PERSON AND EDUCATOR.THE SLC STUDY GROUP IS VERY HELPFUL
I am a Psychology major and I love social psychology so I wanted to see the sociology side of social psychology. I made the mistake of not using rate my professor. Never gain. Absolutely horrible Professor. He does not teach anything, he rambles. Attendance is required and the class has no content. He shows videos I could watch online. Stay away.
The way he phrases things is just weird. Not worth going to lectures. The talks about education a lot. Easy class
Terrible terrible terrible! Learned absolutely nothing! Lectures go in circles!
He can be a bit all over the place at times, and he likes to repeat stuff. However, if you pay attention to what he's trying to say (he likes to use big, fancy words and a lot of them) he can make you really think about things. I liked his class better and better & I even liked the assignments.
I wish I could put -5 for clarity! His instructions are the absolute worst! And all he does is ramble on... sociology itself is very interesting because many people are not exposed to thinking like a sociologist, but this professor does not help one bit! AVOID AVOID AVOID!
He's not too bad. I was skeptical due to the ratings but he is great professor willing to help any in need.
Professor Powers is very helpful at answering questions! Just go to class and though lectures can be a little boring, as long as you do the work you'll do great.
He's verbose and finds multiple ways of describing the same thing. Lectures can get dull because of this, but I think it is mainly due to the nature of the topic. Social Psychology from a soc perspective is pretty cut and dry, and you get the idea from day one. There's a lot of interesting data you'll learn though. He is fairly friendly person, too
Rambles and talks in circles. In the hour long lecture, he typically says what we are going to be doing for the day, talks about something related for 30 minutes, talks on a different topic for 10 minutes, then we spend what's left on what he said we would be doing at the beginning of lecture. He asks more questions than he answers during lecture.
Took this class for fun. The readings can be a bit long, but Powers explains them all thoroughly in lecture. Yes, sometimes he does explain a bit too thoroughly, but these reviews are far too harsh. Show up to his office hours with whatever questions you have, and you'll be enlightened.
I learnt a lot from Prof. Powers in SOC150. The field work required for the class was challenging, but very rewarding. Prof. Powers offered great follow up and feedback, and enlightening conversations during office hours.
Negatives: something about his lectures is grating so I can never pay attention for long. Lecture attendance is a part of your grade. Tends to talk in circles, both in person and in writing. The ideas covered are very obvious. Positives: readings are usually short and can be quite interesting. No exams or section, just feedback from readers.
This is superficial, but his high nasal tone while lecturing, combined with repetitive and simple points, have not made me enjoy this class at all. Guidance for assignments is terrible (3-page-long essay prompts telling YOU to be focused and organized lol). He just has bad communication skills - which is surprising for a Berkeley humanities prof
I liked Prof. Powers, he is very knowledgeable and has lots of interesting readings. He is also very assessable for office hours and will gladly chat with you about any of the assignments. However, the lectures are not very organized which makes it hard to pay attention, and there is a sign-in sheet all semester.
Very enthusiastic about the subject manner. Most of the assignments are centered around preparing for the final paper. The lecture slides and assignments instructions are ridiculously text heavy.
Awful professor. Lectures are tedious and useless. Course materials, even the syllabus, are overly long and disorganized. I think attending office hours actually hurt my grade. Two papers are due at the end of the semester, so your final grade is up in the air for most of it, and the class gets stressful right when you need to focus on others.
I showed up to class about 5 times this semester. I did the readings what papers were assigned (which I wrote pretty late, as well). I did find the material quite interesting, but much of it seemed common sense.
Just don't do it. The prompts are longer than the length requirements for the actual papers. He's also a terrible lecture, it was the 3rd week of the semester and we were still going over the syllabus...
If you're into well-structured classes with powerpoints you probably won't like this. good if you want an easy-going class w a prof who loves the subject. Lectures boring, need self motivation, assignment prompts long but actual work is easy--then again he doesn't grade your papers. Overall rlly easy and found readings interesting on my own.
Worst professor I ever had. Disorganized doesnt even explain. He gives you prompts for p/np papers that are six pages long for a paper that is 2 pages long. the amount of work required for this class was absolutely ridiculous and more work than i had to do for my other 5 unit classes combined. learned absolutely nothing. dont take him
Lectures were extremely entertaining and readings were fun. Although I am not a sociology major, but rather a STEM major, this class made me interested in the field and helped me gain a stronger appreciation for research done within the department. Take this class if you can, especially if you love writing and gathering data.
Powers is very caring. I really like how he is super approachable. Some of the classes can be going in circles, however, he tried his best to get his points across. I would take him again for social psychology 2.0 if possible, but not his education class. Lol.
His lectures are a bit too long but very informative. The papers are a bit to much sometimes but if you keep asking for help from him he will always help. The readings can a be boring but is good stuff. SO much reading and he gives good feedback. The lectures are just too long but try to just pay attention and stay awake.
Prof Powers clearly cares about the subject, and is great about extensions, but he lacks structure in his teaching. Lots of papers, and prompts that are way too long to be helpful. His lectures are mandatory, he takes attendance, but he talks himself in circles, and he just reads his lecture from a word document the whole time. Don't take him.
Professor Powers' course if full of interesting content. I just wish Powers' lectures were a bit more structured. Overall, Powers is a caring professor.
Prof. Power is one professor I would love to have again. Even though his classes were sometimes alittle mixed up, he allways made sure that you got the help you needed. The help, charing and care lead to a great grade, greate friends and a great semester!
I liked the material and content of this class, but hated the lectures. He would say the same few things over and over again, and acted very condescending at times, as if we weren't sociology majors. He also went over the time at the end of the period regularly, which made some late to their next class. But he made attendance mandatory as well.
This class sounds interesting but trust me, it's not. I learned nothing, everything was common sense, and sitting through the lectures was just painful. His voice and style of teaching will drive you insane. It would be an easy A if his grading wasn't as crazy as it is, it just doesn't make sense how things are structured/points are distributed.
The readings for the class are interesting material, but the lectures are bad. The class is mostly graded from 3 papers with a central research paper as the focus. I only did the important readings and did fine. Brian Powers clearly cares about sociology but he tends to ramble, repeat, and be overly simplistic for an upper div.
3 reading logs and fieldwork reports (which are mostly pass/no pass), 1 take-home midterm and 1 take-home final. Does not require you to read every single weekly readings but lectures are really boring :(
The reading materials are great but the lectures were so boring and useless. 1 semester long project, 1 midterm paper, 3 reading logs, and an easy take home final exam! Oh and discussion posts are necessary for participation credits!
Very interesting readings and flexibility to cover a range of topics is a plus.
Professor Powers deserves a much higher rating. He's one of the caring, lenient, accommodating, passionate, and understanding professors I've had during my time here at Berkeley. His grading isn't tough at all and as long as you attend lectures, he basically holds your hand through all your papers and assignments. Just talk to him and he'll help.
Prof. Powers is such an entertaining lecturer! His style is different from every other professor I have had. I like how his class focuses on real life application and discussion rather than memorization and tons of tests. Definitely a great choice if you want to share your opinions and learn hands-on. Same for his Soc150 class!
I took this class over the summer online for 6 weeks and it was fairly easy but the lectures were extremely boring :( there were 2 reading logs, 4 field reports, 1 midterm and final paper (all take home). The readings were great, it was just the lectures that were so boring..
Professor Powers class is not structured as the average lecture course. He provides a medium that is discussion heavy allowing for students to learn from one others experiences given course material. Genuinely interesting class and if you actively participate you learn so much about the educational system.
