Professor Pratt was unhelpful and unclear; his writing was inlegible.
hostile towards students

A pathetic individual on all levels.
should have taught english literature or BS 101
Your mark is 100% subjective, not based on knowledge at all; cuts down geo-engs
this guy is a total egomaniac, be prepared to grovel for marks...unless you have
this man should not be teaching, he does not teach what needs to be taught
Interesting topic... too bad I didn't learn anything about it.
Challenging course; lab seemed to be inconsistent in marking
never met an engineer he didn't like
HE is very rude. You'd really believe he hates what he does.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had, period. He has not taught us anthing.
I can't believe what this guy gets away with. Dont attend this uni
This guy is an embarassment to all professors everywhere!
This man is an embarassment to professors and humans everywhere. Terrible prof.
Arogant, thinks he's a God, and a man with all lifes answers. Waste of money!
This man is an unreal human being. I suggest a career change
two thumbs down
Makes carbon dioxide for plants to use.
stop with all the "stories" and write so we can read it.
Knows every geologist in the world. Personal friend of Darwin
This man should not "Teach" if that is what you call what he does
i don't even think he is a geologist, he just goes to all the conferences
LEARN TO USE TYPED NOTES OR SOMETHING THAT YOUR STUDENTS CAN ACTUALY READ!
I liked him - seemed fun and very sexy
It was a very interesting class, he made learning fun.

i went to two of his classes and then dropped it. that's all it took.
Worst prof. in teaching history
I hated the subject material.........but he seemed like an all right guy
very concieted- seemed to think everyone liked his long drawn out stories
more there to show himself off....not very helpful at all

Rants but rarely teaches. Try's to obscure the material. Arrogant, egotistical, condescending, rude, etc... Undoubtedly the worst example of an instructor that could be found anywhere.
I graduated awhile ago if I see him in public it isnt going to be pretty! Worst Prof Ever!
This guy's class is EASY, he's funny, he's helpful and likes it if you're interested. All this guff on here is because he comes off as a little arrogant. Give the guy a chance, he doesn't say/do anything you don't every day.
This guy is without a doubt the worst prof I ever studied under. Drones on hour after hour about himself. I cant believe I paid money for this class, worst investment (time and money) I ever made. Stay away from this one!
why he fail me?
heart of black coal
I think this guy got a bad rap. I was a student of his more than once and whether or not I wanted to admit it he made people actuall learn. I have seen him since I was done and he is genuinely happy to see his ex-students do well.

Pratt can be funny at times, but the impression that I got from him was that he was somewhat mean and unaccomodating. There were some students talking in the front of the class, and he snapped at them like no other Prof I've ever seen. His lectures are pretty boring, and he's not an easy marker.
Terrible. Marks based on whether he likes you or not. Refuses to give your marks before final exams so he can play with your mark. Shouldn't be teaching.

Pratt LOVES himself. Should get married, wouldn't have to change his name. Class is terrible, avoid at all costs.

Does he have any friends? Prepare to listen to his life story zzzz. Don't plan on learning anything else! Avoid if you can.

Brian pratt thinks way to highly of himself. He is THE worst prof I have ever had. AVOID any of his classes!
He is one of the best professors I've ever had, and his class was fantastic. Despite everyone's complaining, it wasn't hard either. I think that you people need to stop blaming others when you get bad marks. Go to class once in a while, and maybe you won't flunk out. If putting in some effort doesn’t help, maybe you don’t belong in university.
Worst professor in the entire university, very unprofessional! Marks are based completely on his opinion of you which have absolutely nothing to do with how much work you put in. To challenge his opinion is to ask for poor grades.
pretentious, self serving, poor lectures
Terrible class. Consumed nearly all of my spare time trying to sort through coarse material determining if it was correct. Pratt is a disgrace to U of S. If you take this class you will regret it!!!
Worst Prof to date!!! I failed his class twice with the SAME mark, but passed the following year with a great mark from a different prof teaching the same class...go figure!!
Not always easy going and wants you to think on your own. If you invest a bit of extra work, you won't have a problem
Forced attendance, inconsistent marking. Almost solely because of this guy I swapped to a finance major. Would have easily passed the class except he marked me down on the final (i'd estimate i'd gotten ~80, he gave me 35) because we never got along. Tried to contest it, no one would respond to anything. By far the worst Prof ever.
In all fairness, books could be written about this mans state of being. Irratic is perhaps the kindest description.
He is extremely boring and all he talks about is the places he has been. I did not learn anything is his lectures. His midterms were crazy difficult, I have no idea where we were to get some of the information because it was not in the textbook. Do not take his class. I know more personal stories of his then the actual subject.
Extremely egocentric, spent more time criticizing the textbook (which was $100+) and telling personal stories rather than covering actual material. He is never wrong, most of his stories are about how he corrects tour guides or colleagues. I personally will not take another class from him
Very interesting man, but by far the most boring class I have taken so far. His notes are helpful and are summarized versions of the textbook, but honestly I didn't go to class because it was so boring and dry and everything was anecdotal. He is a very intersting person who would be perfect for higher level classes.
While Pratt goes on tangents all the time, I found the lectures and stories interesting. Be aware though that his powerpoints are mostly pictures for this course so if you want good notes, attend class.
He likes to talk about himself a lot. Tells stories about things he has seen and you are left wondering if we are going to get tested on his life. On exams the trivial stuff matters, very annoying.
Lectures are very dry, was very hard to pay attention to him for 3 hours. His notes were very vague, so the textbook is a must. Exams were very difficult, questions were confusing.
Tended to stray off topic and spend time talking about personal anecdotes that were only vaguely relevant to the lectures.
My misfortune to have met.
If you are reading this please be warned. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He does a terrible job of explaining the class content and his final was impossible considering it was over the most random crap. I made the mistake of falling into the hell hole trap aka Brian Pratt's class. Also he does not like to respond to emails
I was expecting this class to boost my mark and it was by far the lowest mark of the semester. Expect the midterm to be alright and the final to be almost impossible. The final dropped my mark 30%. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT take this class.
His lectures are nothing like the tests, since it looks like he just takes a multiple choice bank and picks from there. The entire first lecture didn't even cover class material and was simply about him. Seriously? I wanted to learn geology, not BrianPratt-ology. I'm in engineering and this is the lowest mark on my transcript....
Took his Geol 343 class for my degree due to my specialization. Needless to say, his class was tough. Could not focus for even 10 minutes in the lectures. So many tangents in the lectures. Too many pictures. Textbook was a must to pass his class. Labs saved me. TA was awesome at making things clear. Came out with a good grade in the end luckily.
Not meant to be a teacher. Although he really knows his stuff when it comes to geology, he's more interested in talking about himself and showing you pictures from all the trips he has been on. His Geology class was the first I'd ever taken and lets just say after having him as a prof I don't want to take another.
Brian Pratt is not a good prof. His slides are filled with pictures of himself in various locations and his lectures are almost impossible to sit through. Avoid at all costs. On a positive note, this class is 40/60 midterm/final and an easy pass if you even put in minimal effort.
Brian Pratt is a very kind and well traveled man, but he is not cut out to be a teacher in any way. He only tells stories of his own travels. he tells you to study from the slides (which he posts) but they are only filled with pictures. He told us not to worry about little details for the midterm, but most of the questions were small things. AVOID.
God awful lectures. He is clearly a well travelled man and is knowledgable on the subject, but he does little in the way of actually teaching. Don't even bother going to his lectures unless you want to see pictures of him on vacation. Avoid at all cost.
Should not be aloud to teach. only talks about himself. PowerPoint's are useless class average was 50% after midterm. Lectures are boring and pointless
Normally I wouldnt complain about a professed; however, Brians class was a complete mess. I learned nothing, because we were taught nothing. I could tell you where Brian went on vacation in 2009 (because lectures are only about his famous life,) but I cannot tell you about the Cambrian time. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He doesnt email you back.
I'm a 4th geological science student who's had many classes with Dr. Pratt; I personally think Brian is a great teacher. If you treat him with respect, come to his classes, and listen you should have no problem doing well. Yes he uses a lot of visuals, but he speaks to these visuals if you listen closely.
- Reached out for extra help on 3 occasions and he never responded - PowerPoints he gives out are mainly pictures and fail to elaborate on what he talks about in his lectures & lectures are hard to pay attention to - Textbook will be your best friend - seems nice & respected - maybe not fit for online
Lectures are filled with photos and no actual information. Talks about random stories instead of actual course material. Held a review session and when students asked questions he said "you can figure that out for yourself in the textbook and lecture" as if he had anything actually useful in the lectures. Avoid at all costs.
Just took the final and all I can say is lol. Lectures filled with photos of rocks and literal floor tile then asks us to draw 4 stratigraphic columns and 2 block diagrams in 40 minutes on the final. Was literal blasphemy
Didn't respond to ANY emails, didn't post lectures for 2 weeks and then back-dated 4 hour and a half long lectures, rambled incessantly about irrelevant information, powerpoints were almost entirely pictures of vacations, and his tests were overly difficult. Final and midterm exam average was below 60%.
He's informed & knowledgeable but lectures are a waste of time. Spends most of it talking about himself/people he's met, not on the material. Went quiet for weeks & didn't answer anyone so had to get the dpt. head involved. Take it with ANYONE else. Tests on random factoids mentioned in passing in lectures so can't rely just on the book either.
I am not over-exaggerating when I say this man did not teach us the material that was tested on the final exam. Like literally on a scale of 1 to 10 for correlation between lectures and final exam I give it a 1.5 at best, and I think that might even be generous
Avoid Brian at all costs - he rambles endlessly about dead colleagues and past vacations instead of focusing on the actual material. Nobody could reach him and he provided virtually no information about exams. Absolutely hated the class and would've dropped it if I didn't need this credit for my major.
So far the worst prof I've had. His online lectures would drone on for 2-3 hours, thankfully they were not live so you could speed them up. I also did not receive my AES extra time for the midterm which caused me to get a really low mark & he told me it was my fault and I should make sure to have it for the final
The exams are completely obscure. He does not answer emails. Do not recommend him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. I was told to take this class as an easy elective and it was awful. The lectures had no relevance to what was on the test and there was so much textbook reading that it was pointless. I read the reviews for this professor and still took the class but trust me, its better to wait for a different teacher.
There is only a midterm and final. The lectures are very long and unhelpful. They do not include any notes on the slides, only pictures which means you have to listen and take your own notes. I did not find the lectures helpful at all. He mostly just talks about himself and his own discoveries. wouldn't recommend.
Dude thinks he's famous and grades like he doesn't have thought going through his brain.
94% of your final grade is based off of tests. 60% final,20% lecture midterm, 4% lab midterm,10% lab final. Then 8 decent length labs that make up the last 6%. The lecture exams are hard. Just gotta read everything in the textbook and pray.
Terrible and offensive to students
Extremely arrogant and full of himself. For context, he sent an email to the class regarding low attendance, saying that it was a a privilege to learn from “world-famous” scientists like himself and that we should show up and be grateful to get to learn from him. Also talks down to students and exams frequently have questions on uncovered material.
Buddy yaps the whole class about non related stuff
Talks about himself more then he teaches the material so be prepared to read the textbook if you want to actually learn
Very cocky and arrogant towards students. Makes a big deal about attendance, takes a shot at students for not coming to class, also his emails were quite upsetting when you ask for help on what's going to be covered on the midterm or final exam.
Lectures are awful. Slides have 0 notes, just images, so you must listen close, but he barely covers anything useful. Most of class is bad jokes, travel stories, bragging, and rambling about dead colleagues. He should provide proper slides but doesn't,leaving the class average below 60%.Avoid his courses unless youre ready to read the entire textbook
I love Earth history and evolution, so it was very disappointing to take this class and learn almost entirely about sedimentary rocks, who Pratt knows (and whether or not they're alive), and where he took his pictures. Reading the textbook is the best way to get by. If you do have to take this class, hopefully you don't get him as a prof.
He was passionate however not a great professor. He tends to get sidetracked during lectures, and is very hard to reach by email outside of class. It's impossible to follow what he's saying throughout the lectures so get ready to read the whole textbook if you want to pass.
