great teacher
The worst professor ever !
If you participate once or twice in class he will like you.
He is a great teacher and helps you whenever needed it. He does a lot of group work that ties into the lesson and the essay you will be working on.
Good teacher! He's pretty funny and plays music before class. He takes attendance everyday and very little assignments are put into the grade book so GO TO CLASS! If you raise your hand and give your input he'll like you.
He is a decent teacher. The essays aren't that difficult to write and he does give good feedback on everything dealing with the class. English does make more sense during his lecture.
Very fun and easy class. You have to like essays because a lot of the class focuses on that. Reading is necessary too, as there are multiple short stories and novels to read. Very easygoing teacher. Not afraid for an in class debate. As long as you pay attention it's hard not too pass.
Great teacher! Although the course material was nothing I was too excited about, he still made it a worthwhile class.
He is a really nice person, but he grades really hard, last semester I received an A on all three papers. This semester having him as a professor I received a D- and a C+ on the third it is not graded yet. His IA's are much easier graders.
Took Raftery for Eng-460: The Novel. He engaged the discussions and made them more interesting. Lecture was only long because of the allotted time, but nonetheless there were great discussions of the novels we read. Mid-termFinal was extremely hard, be prepared to right and defend your position with the text.
He is a great teacher overall. I've never taken a test which is refreshing. You have 3 papers to do the entire semester and he really prepares you for them. When he gives you the opportunity the Thursday before the papers due to come meet with him DO IT! I didn't meet w/ him on the 1st paper I did terrible. Met with him on the 2nd and got an A+.
Overall he is okay
Raftery is pretty average as far professors go.
A little dry but a nice guy.
Brian Raftery overall is a good teacher but nothing absolutely spectacular. He is a really nice guy who gives relatively easy assignments. Grading criteria is very clear and you will not have to worry too much about his class. He is funny sometimes and is definitely not a professor you will hate. I recommend taking him if you have the option.
He will help you get 100% on all essays if you ask for help.
When there are essays due, he requires you to meet up with him or an IA to look over your paper, or you can write an abstract instead. Meeting up with him for essay feedback was really helpful, I got A's on all my essays. Although he is very blunt. He will tell you straight up if your there is something that sucks. But he helps you make it better.
He met with us before every paper. If you put the effort in, you'll have no problem being successful in this class.
Had Raftery during my first semester of my first undergrad year. He makes his students work for their grades, but is also willing to give excessive amount of extremely helpful feedback. Even now as a senior, I have never learned so much applicable information in one class. He's incredibly smart and very nice. Go to office hours and don't be lazy!
Brian Raftery: the most monotone professor you will ever have. His intentions on your grade were clear that they will be what you start out with. Raftery said, "if you get a B in the beginning, you will remain a B student throughout the semester." This class was just a horrible experience. I kept looking at the clock, but it wouldn't move. No!
The three essays that you'll do in the class are relatively easy. The lectures are really helpful. Don't miss class, because a lot happens in class that can be hard to make up. Professor Raftery is pretty dry, but has an easy class if you attend class.
Professor Raftery takes participation very seriously. Seriously as in, every day you get graded on it. Make sure to show up. The lectures drag on. You only have 3 essays due all semester, and he spends every minute going over the next one due. It is helpful if you're confused, but if you understand what you're doing, it gets hard to stay awake.
Professor Raftery was an okay teacher, he was partially annoying at times and not very clear on some things. If you miss even one day of class then you end up so far behind that it feels like you cant catch up. He teaches in a monotone voice and reads off his slides for the entire class period. Avoid this professor if you can.
Each day is worth points & you have to submit your participation each day. Only 3 essays/semester & each minute of class prepares you for the upcoming one. Light workload but only 3 essays means they're worth major points. Don't procrastinate. Reasonable, fair grader. Lecture heavy but super helpful & thorough, especially if you ask questions.
He talks very monotone you will fall asleep
Professor Raftery is such an amazing teacher! If you get the chance do take his class! He will help you with everything and will give you all the tools you need to do your assignments. He's hilarious, and honestly, he will surprise you! Super sweet and easy on assignments. Do take his class!
Brofessor was quite the dude. This class required a couple of books to be read for participation, but you can get away with not reading them as long as you buy them and bring them to class. He lectures a lot, but it's not awful. He's a stickler for proper grammar.
Professor Raftery is super chill. The projects, group projects, and little assignments are easy As, however, don't let that affect the way you write your papers. Try your best on them because he really is intelligent and grades very hard on them. I'd say skip class if you want because his lectures aren't that helpful so notes are a waste of time.
He is a good professor, his voice is super monotone and his lectures are long and boring. Show up for participation, practically for more points.
Participation and 3 essays are what make this class. Do bad on one and u will have the grade for the class. Not clear on what is wrong with your essay. I made all of his suggested corrections to the essay still received a b- & my essay was hands down the best of the others I read. Lectures really heavy. Does not write the essay in class. Busy work.
He was overall very nice. However, very monotone. I didnt like to ask questions because I normally got attitude like I should have known the answer. He had high expectations on papers submitted but it was an easy going class overall. Not terrible
This professor is not one I would recommend to anyone. I accidentally miss quoted something on an assignment that was a rough draft and instead of helping me fix it he didn't give me points for the assignment and said I was lucky he didn't report me to the university for plagiarism. He is overall very monotoned and boring. Do not take him
Don't be fooled by all these negative reviews. Prof Raftery is a super easy teacher. You have to do 3 essays in ENG 105 and they are all relatively easy. After you write your first draft you can meet with him and he will literally break down your essay and tell you specifically what to fix so they are all easy A's. Just show up for participation.
His class was extremely boring and kind of pointless. We only were graded on three essays so if you bombed one, you bombed the class. Also, the topics of our essays were boring to write about. He seemed like a nice guy but he did not really get to know his students.
There is a lot of discussion that is one sided. He would ask questions and expect people to know the answer even if he had not talked on it. Very monotone. Grade is based on participation and 3 essays and that is it, which makes the course hard. My grade dropped 10% after not doing well on one essay.
This class is easy. He is so knowledgeable and he will really help you succeed if you go to him for help. He offers such great advice on your papers. Go to class, he counts participation for a good part of your grade. His lectures will set you up for success on the papers. He tells you exactly what he wants and will give you the grade you work for.
Raftery took over our UNV-106HN class halfway through and completely changed the structure of it. He spent most of the time we had lecturing and the lectures were boring. He seems like a nice guy but overall I feel that his class was a complete waste of time.
He is a great teacher and really nice, although he is a tough grader since he is the Head of the English Department, he gives great feedback and one truly does learn from him and what he teaches. Although some of the topics we learn are a little boring, he tries to make it fun and interesting and allows kids from the class to tell jokes.
He is a decent teacher in that he was clear in his instructions and always available outside class. Some of his lectures were not engaging, and the reading was sometimes difficult.
My experience with Professor Raftery was bitter sweet, as a person, he is a wonderful man, as a teacher, he is a bit harsh. He does care for his students but he can be brutally honest. He grades essays hard but not terrible. If you think a grade looks fishy, don't be afraid to reach out to him! Attendance is mandatory but have your group cover you.
In general, I did not enjoy the class material, but Professor Raftery is clear with his grading criteria and very interactive. As long as you have a basic concept of English and philosophy you will be fine.
Lectures are never boring, often very thought-provoking. Show up to class, do the required work, and you will have fun.
There was a lot of papers that needed to be written, but the feedback was always short timed and when it came to getting our grades back you could get a lower grade because when they go over your paper you are being told what necessarily needs to be fixed all the time.
He is very nice, and class was average. A little boring in lecture, but I would definitely recommend him. He gives very good feedback, and really takes time to explain assignments. He's a nice guy- very strict policy on electronics in class- but for longer classes he'll give "tech breaks".
Raftery is a nice guy. The classes are a little boring and focus a lot on grammar. There were two big papers for the semester and not much else. He does grade easy but on the essays, he is very tough and structured. No quizzes or test. Overall he knows what he talks about and I passed the class easily.
This is the hardest english class I have ever taken. The papers in this class are graded harshly and there are presentations in the begining of the course. His lectures are boring but at least he tries to make some jokes perodically.
Raftery is great at making his expectations clear and explaining how to write a good essay. The course focuses on three essays and those are the only real assignments. With Raftery's help, this class is very easy and you should have no trouble passing. Raftery is dedicated to help you be successful and will help you outside of class.
Your grade will depend on attendance, group work, and your own individual work. His lectures are very engaging, interesting, and planned with purpose. The class tends to get out early depending on how your class time is spent/is the material is understood.
Lots of reading and long lectures. Overall super helpful but all power points. If you dont read you cant pass.
He has alot of information that he goes over quickly and then he wont post the pwoer points till after the quiz. It was very frustrating but the essays were super easy. There was only one test and it was pretty fair. He doesnt test on useless information. I enjoyed the class, recommend taking his 7a MWF. He super understanding.
Take him for UNV-106. Simple. Would let us out early, essays were pretty easy as he was straight forward with his expectations, group project is easy A as long as you do it. really caring if you take the time to talk to him as well.
Great teacher, his requirements needed to get a good grade on papers were clear and there was rarely a "boring " lecture. He is willing to help always and offers time to get 1 on 1 time with your essay in class.
He's just kind of your typical older guy. He's nice enough, a little boring and lecture heavy, but overall really smart. He gives great feedback on essays and writing. You have to be in class for participation. He gave us learning groups to work with occasionally which is helpful. He knows writing and English really well and that is clear.
He is an easy professor. His lectures might be boring but he does prepare you for the writing you have to turn in for this course. Listen to his feedback on turning in your rough drafts as the final drafts are over 25% of your grade. If you follow his directions you should get an A.
Professor Raftery was good overall. The only thing is that participation is taken every class period and it does affect your grade if you skip class often. His papers are easy and what he expects ios clear. Organization on papers matters! If you have two or more errors your grade is already at a c on your papers.
Good teacher, easy and super nice but we didnt do much.
Super nice chill guy, most of the time would let us out super early. 3 essays for entire semester, grading criteria super clear. Definitely recommend for that easy A
Prof. Raftery is kind and really easy on grading, he only looks at word count and grammar. You do have to show up most of the time, but the assignments are pretty much busy work and he does not five you much guidance on anything.
Raftery is a truly amazing professor. He makes mandatory 1 on 1 time before the due date of every essay for every single student in his class. He takes the time to read your papers and gives solid feedback. He is very personable, and it is easy to tell that he genuinely cares about his students.
Professor Raftery was okay. Very boring lectures but he is super strict on attendance. He is an easy grader and will give you feedback on your essays.
don't do it. I didn't learn a single thing and he was mean and harsh.
Professor Raftery was a nice and knowledgeable person who wanted to see us do well in our essays. His instructions are very clear, and if you follow the rubric you will do just fine. He may be a bit strict, but overall, I enjoyed this class.
This professor is incredibly rude. In fact, most English professors are. He does not care about your success. He always has an attitude when you reach out to him for any clarification or help. He is incredibly strict with grades and had no sympathy for us trying to transition from on-campus to online for the quarantine. Good luck with him
He was a great teacher, but often his powerpoints are long and drawn out. He requires a few assignments due a month and as long as you put in effort and follow basic rules, they are easy to complete and take minimal time. Be sure to ask for help before due date to make sure your assignments are the way he expects.
Professor Raftery is okay. He would probably be the first professor I've had throughout my freshman year that I would not care to take again. He is the head of the English department, so his grading style is already unreasonably tough. His lectures seemed very dragged out and slow, and you would have to attend class to gain participation points.
Raftery's class is easy content-wise, but he is kinda rude. He expects everyone to have perfect answers and opinions about the readings done in class, and he openly groans at some people's responses. One time, a student was honest and admitted that he didn't do this week's reading when Raftery called on him. Raftery asked if he was stupid.
I didn't like Brian Raftery. His class is very lecture heavy and his voice is very monotone making lessons very dull. He also came across as very rude and would call people out in class. In addition, he will post assignments on loud cloud with instruction different from the ones he gives in class and marks you down if you get them confused.
I expected a lot more to come from this class. Lots of essays. Considering its a university success class, I learned nothing about the university.
Prof. Raftery is very sweet and kind. He is an easy grader, and if you follow his instructions you will do fine. He assigns far too much reading, but you can also get by with Sparknotes in many cases. He will call on people in class though so be prepared with at least some knowledge of the pieces. Lectures are pretty boring, but informative.
Professor Raftery is a pretty easy going professor. We wrote about 3 papers throughout the semester. No quizzes or tests. No real homework only writing the papers on our own time. Does not let you work in class but I had no problem with that. Lectures are really boring. As long as you do the assignments you will pass.
This prof has high expectations but doesn't communicate them to you. Everything you would want to know before completing an assignment is reflected in grading, not before. This professor is just not good. I'm just hoping I pass at this point. Those of you with GPA scholarships, DO NOT TAKE HIM! HE WILL TANK YOUR GPA BEFORE YOU CAN SAY HELP!
I personally had no problems with Raftery. He made his expectations known at the beginning of class, and the grading criteria for assignments were relatively clear. I contacted him several times outside of class for questions or clarifications, and he worked with me every single time. Put in the effort and you will end up with a good grade.
Professor Raftery simply shouldn't teach if he can't provide students with helpful, clear & useful feedback. Students should not have to go searching for why they got a grade, it should be clear in the rubric. He's dismissive & acts annoyed when you ask for help of any kind. Not encouraging or a good teacher. I suggest GCU do some evaluating on him
Brian is the definition of a college professor. He "teaches" as in reads a power point and does not give any extra detail. When it comes to grading, Brian pretends he is a neuro surgeon and makes sure there is no errors. Overall a terrible professor.
Very narcissistic and rude
Do not take this teacher unless you have to. Is not kind when needing extra help, or questions. Never responded to my emails/private forums. Has called me out in front of the class, and always makes me feel wrong.
I have always gotten A's and B's on all my papers and English class... Until Profesor Raftery. He was the first person to ever give me an F on anything! Many of my fellow peers were in the situation about 10 people I talked to they dropped the class as well. He is monotone and when you ask a question he yells at you.
I personally struggled in his class and do not recommend taking his Eng-106 classes. his feedback is very minimal and poor so it is hard to fix issues on hand. He is also not nice when it comes to clarification questions and will either yell or tell you to check announcements. He grades insanely hard too for a 100 level class making it unfair.
I took him for HUM-201HN. This was a brand new course, so it wasn't well structured or understandable at times. Additionally, he was very rude and would ask questions on presentations that students had no way of knowing the answer to. He would make fun of you if you gave an answer about the reading that he deemed 'not good enough.' Do not take him
Raftery reads his PPT word to word. Positive: He narrows down the essay's topic making it easier for us to write about the essay (which other eng profs haven't done that I heard from my friends). Also, when I asked him any questions, he made me feel guilty for asking it like u r the prof & u r supposed to help us even if the question was repeated.
Professor Raftery is awful. Worst professor I have had in my college career by far. If there was an option I'd give him a 0/5 stars. His lectures are monotone and boring. He ignored my emails requesting office hours multiple times and when you do get him to respond he does so in an extremely rude tone for no reason. Avoid at all costs.
I actually took HUM201HN, and as a burnout gifted kid, this class isn't hard to get an A in, but he's super unclear with expectations and not tech-savvy at all. Lots of tedious work in this class but also some good discussions. Easy to get by without reading, mostly felt like wasted time tho. This course didn't even exist until this semester lol.
Raftery seems to have stretched himself too thin with classes. He came late every week, moved in person classes online often & graded very late. He can get impatient & intense & calls on people if no one is talking. He was an easy grader on assignments EXCEPT for papers- insanely critical. He would bring politics into class but not remain neutral.
This class simply seemed like a waste of time. The course was structured extremely poorly and Professor Raftery seemed to not really care about the quality of his instruction. He rarely held class in person and discussions were basically him reading a PowerPoint. He treats students very poorly, does not admit to mistakes, and is very accusatory.
I would not recommend Mr. Raftery. Im usually okay with strict professors, but he is actually mean and grumpy which made me never want to go to class. He called me and my friends out a few times in class and made us feel stupid. On top of this he is a very tough grader and even if you perfectly follow the rubric he will knock off points.
Professor Raftery has high expectations. He gives great discussions in class and is very interesting to listen to. Following directions on assignments is a must.
He has a tough time responding to emails and when you ask for help in class he gives you a lecture on how he talked about it in class. He gets frustrated when he has to repeat himself.
Professor Raftery is quite irritable and difficult to please. He is a tough grader, and will give you zeros on rubrics for small, minute errors. If your class is lacking in participation, he will become verbally frustrated quickly, and when asking questions, he is often only seeking one, "right" answer. I will be avoiding his classes in the future.
If you have the option, seriously please take another professor at GCU. Professor Raftery's lectures did not relate to the course. They were long and boring and attendance is mandatory. When students would ask a question, he always gets mad when he answers. He did not seem to know how to engage well with his students in this course.
As far as teaching goes, he is not that bad. He is pretty good at breaking down essays, but Prof. Raftery grades fairly hard. The main thing for me that he is very rude, and not nice, which makes his class quite unenjoyable.
Professor Raftery is very knowledgeable on class material, but is disrespectful in class. He will berate students in front of the class to embarass them and is not very resppectful of student opinions.
Overall, I thought Raftery was fine. He is slightly irritable and will cold call students if nobody's participating. He isn't a super tough grader, and as long as you show up to his class, you will be fine. He is a stickler about GCU policy, so make sure you're submitting all assignments correctly. He will not be forgiving if you don't.
This dude is very strict, if you get him, make sure to turn in assignments on time because my grade went down to a D after forgetting to turn in a essay that I finished. Also, he does not give any in class time to do essays so he expects you to work on it outside of class.
I took his class online due to the pandemic. Hes knowledgeable considering that he offers new perspective on DQs but hes not what the ideal educator should be. Hes SO picky about everything so dont always expect to receive an A on papers (rare). Hes not likable and is very cold on forums. Made me feel discouraged as a writer & eng major.
I loved the discussions we had in class, even though the class as a whole is stupid. He is a tough grader and I struggled to get B+'s in his class on our major writing assignments. He is an professor he expects your papers to be perfect. Also to get an A, you had to either hit the max word count or go above it to be "an honors student".
He sucks at responding to emails. His class was super boring and he was mean when he didn't get his way. I am sure he is a great person outside of the classroom but I would not take his class again
DONT TAKE HIM! Was the most unhelpful and least understanding teacher Ive ever had. Sleep deprived, I fell asleep in his class a total of two times and because of this he told me I was rude. After this, my grades went from A-B to C-D and even if I showed up to all the classes hed give me 2/20 on participation. Very unwilling to answer questions.
This professor is actually terrible, no help at all does not care for students. He is simply there for a paycheck. I am surprised his grade is even this high because this professor is well known on campus because of his horrible personality.
This professor is the absolute worst professor any college student could take. He will not accept an absence unless you have a sds covid positive test. I got super sick and was throwing up and was given a 0/20 for missing class. When it comes to asking for help, he is an absolute choche. Very unhelpful and makes you feel stupid if you need help.
Rude to students, extremely tough grader, horrible on so many levels. I would avoid this professor at all costs.
Professor Raftery is a tough grader who has high expectations for his students. His classes can be difficult so attendance is important. He is very knowledgeable.
I would recommend Professor Brian Raftery! He is very engaging in class, and has more than enough knowledge to teach this course. I had him once before this class, and I enjoyed him for both courses I took with him. He can be a bit intimidating and strict, but he is very accommodating and a great teacher.
He often moves up due dates without warning then would get upset at students for being unprepared regarding such assignments. He also is a harsh grader without much explanation.
Professor Raftery is, I guess, fine. I wasn't particularly as fond having to take the class, but the class usually felt slow and boring. I am not the best at writing English so unfortunately, I wouldn't do as well on essays as he would grade pretty strictly. I didn't like having to speak up for him, even though the class usually is quiet enough.
This class is an easy pass. Attendance is a pain, you can show up to class but not get it due to the amount of work for 10 points. This does add up and is my one critique. Other than that he is a great professor and while he might seem old school he has a lot of essays that focus on more modern aspects such as the effects of social media and ADHD.
God forbid you aren't clear about the "theme" of a text when you do your blog entry. He WILL mark you down for it and he won't explain how you can do better. Little help is offered; many spelling/grammar errors in his announcements and posts, but he wants you to have perfect grammar and spelling in assignments.
SO easy if you do the work its an EASY A+
This professor grades very harshly and does not give grace when asking for help or points back on an essay. If you have him and cant switch out, make sure you get help from the IA and have them grade you paper instead.
Just not great
A class that has no clear point to it and has assignments that seem like pure busy work. Mr. Raftery's classes are just PowerPoint lectures that are not easy to stay focused on with outside reading, and he is really bad with technology. He does not have any empathy for students, does not give any grace, and grades incredibly strict.
Do Not take him. Worst professor and is so rude. Doesn't care about students at all and will call out people in class if he gets annoyed. Do anything you can to not take him!!
SO RUDE TO ALL STUDENTS AND HAS NO RESPECT OR UNDERSTANDING THAT ITS 2022 NOT 1970.
Professor Raftery daily lets his mood dictate how his class goes. A bad mood day means lower scores for any student that had to present or speak in that class period. He is rude and degrading to students and the "critique" on assignments is unhelpful. Don't try and ask for help or to leave class a little early, or he will scoff at you.
His most prominent traits were impatience, lack of empathy for students, and irritability. Whatever ability he had to teach the material was spoiled by his attitude. Asked for clarity on feedback and he just insulted me. I've had teachers as old as him, but in his case it seems it's hindering his hearing and even comprehension. 0/10 do not take him
Wasn't terrible at explaining, but wasn't very straight forward about expectations or instructions for essays. A pretty picky grader and marked stupid points off. Not easy to talk to or get feedback from, mainly had to go to the IAs. Only grades were essay related and participation though. No homework aside from the essays. Didn't have any tests.
Overall: this teacher needs to retire. Again, I do not mean to sound rude but his age is starting to effect his teaching ability. If he shows(which he will) any offensive behavior, please report it to your ssc, hopefully enough cases of his terrible behavior will open an investigation. Assignments are not hard, look for other paragraph for advice.
My advice: check every essay and assignments with him during his office hours, his grading is at least consistent and will give you decent feedback. Do not let this man intimidate you because he will scoff at you for anything. Very moody man. Class is easy to get by if you have classmates who participate in discussions(Which you will in the honors)
This professor is a complete jerk. Almost every single day he would call me out in the middle of class and make some sort of offensive remark concerning myself. His age is really affecting his teaching abilities, and he should really retire. He offers no feedback, and this class is a complete joke. Theres readings for each class, but I never did it
Listen, Brian is a very smart man, did an incredible job with showing history and English together. Personally loved his teaching style and did actually learn stuff. BUT he is very rude. Will not give feedback without making you feel stupid. Brought me in front of the whole class and yelled at me for talking too loudly. Pay heavy attention.
I am always scared of him, he has no empathy, unfortunately. Wish he gave us a little more grace and he isn't afraid to call people out in class and embarrass them. Lesson learn to pay attention to who my professor will be.
While taking this class, you will quickly discover it is not a place to mess around; throughout the course, you will only have three papers; however, these papers you must do well on these, or else your grade will fall apart. You will have plenty of time to write these papers, so time is not the issue. ***He helped me become a way better writer***
Basically, he is just old. Has hearing problems, missed class for health reasons often, and is often irritable. He probably has interesting things to say, it was just drowned out by gruff and rude behavior. Not a terrible teacher, and if you have to be in his class, you'll be ok. But if you can get out of it, you will have a pleasanter experience.
He was not a very friendly person and I think he had a-lot going on health wise. He had good intentions but was not friendly at all.
His class wasn't challenging but the only thing that really mattered was the essays. He is very clear with the essays and explains very well during his class lectures. But he is a tough grader and grades consist of mainly essays.
Honestly, the man's a genius. He facilitates good discussions and also makes them applicable to real-world events. If you go to class, participate, & do what you need to do, you will be fine. He doesn't like slackers. If you are sensitive or set in your ways don't take his class. He will challenge your thinking & make it known if he disagrees w u.
People are such wusses when rating Brain. He is goated on another level. He tries to scare students off the first couple weeks, but he is actually kinda funny and you can BS everything so easily. I learn some cool things because he has a lot of experience with Rolling Stone and overall, he is just a G.
Raftery is not as bad as everyone says he is. The man is kind and knowledgeable about literature and historical events but is very strict and grades harshly. He struggles with technology due to old age and has trouble hearing during class discussions. Fly under the radar, do the work, and you'll be fine (but don't let him learn your name).
Professor Raftery is a tough grader and does not give the greatest feedback on assignments. The papers that you have to write for this class, have to be up to his standards or else it will not receive a good grade.
