I love Dr. Ribeiro's class. He makes philosophy really interesting. The test aren't bad if you study well. He gives random weekley quizzes that aren't too difficulf but you should definitely do the reading.
I like Dr.Ribeiro's class. He tells funny stories and he seems to really enjoy teaching philosophy. You need to do the readings for the quizzes. Tests are relatively easy.
Makes Philosophy fun again!!
Very nice and funny, tests are mostly essay, but he gives you a review sheet. had to buy a lot of little books for this class at beginning of year.
Dr. Ribiero is one of the best teacher's I've ever had. Go to the study sessions and you'll make A's on every test. He's kinda hot in an inexplicable way... Maybe it's the NPR-style smoker voice? He's hilarious, and he demystifies Philosophy. Take this class, seriously, you won't regret it.
A professor this hot is evidence of a provident deity.
Awesome class, had a lot of fun taking it. Also gave me some good fodder for arguing against religion majors
Brian is a great teacher-class is enjoyable and he always has funny remarks-hes not afraid to be frank! Tests are SO EASY-just go to study session and get all the answers. You just have to ready the easy readings for the day and youll make 100 on all quizzes. he drops 2 quiz grades-highly reccomend!
A great guy who makes class enjoyable and ultimately interesting. He is the first teacher I've ever had I identified with and he really got me interested in philosophy. His class is pretty easy too, reading isn't that necessary. Just take him.
It's been a great semeseter. Teaching style is wonderful. Lectures informative and entertaining. He's the rare gem (especially for such a young age) of professor who's truly in it to teach. I can't say enough. Take the class. it's thought provokingly well worth your time and money.
Ribeiro is totally hot. He's really smart and very easy going. Great lectures. I'm an English major, but he is by far my favorite professor. TAKE HIM!

Great professor. Make sure you read so you will do well on your weekly quizes. Go to exam review sessions because the test are exactly alike. Highly reccommend him
Really smart guy. Young too, so relates well to students. Hot?? Um, NO! Not unless you like the overweight intellectual type. Take him though! And make sure you attend class because he takes daily role that actually matters in the end.
One of the best teachers I've ever had!! Very interesting class!! I was actually excited to go! He's young and very smart. His tests are really easy if you actually pay attention in class! I got 99 on both so far. You have to go to class though! He gives pop quizzes once a week so try to read. I didn't read all the time, his quizzes are very easy.
This class was so much fun to attend just to hear him lecture. Obviously knows a lot about philosophy and loves to argue and debate in class. 12 Quizzes throughout semester and drops 2 at end. Mid-Term, Final, and 2 papers. I made a B and didn't put forth a ton of effort, but had fun in the class.
2 tests (mid-term & final), 2 papers, and some quizzes. Do the readings and all the quizzes will be EASY. Ribeiro is hilarious during lecture. You will look forward going to lecture everytime. He really knows his stuff and teaches it in an interesting way. Overall, he's a great guy. Highly recommended.
Dr. Ribeiro is the most brillant and funny professor at UTC,or in the south-eastern region for that matter! If you take one class at UTC,it should be his! He's so helpful and his classes are incredibly interesting and entertaining!Plus he is super smokin' HOTT!If you can get into his class, you should but good luck, cause this man is in HIGH demand!
LOVED this class. This class consists of 2 papers and 2 tests (final and midterm). He also takes attendence into consideration and has a weekly quiz to make sure everyone is keeping up with the readings. This is a great class for genEd.it is very interesting and you couldn't ask for a better teacher. I was never bored and looked forward to his c
he is funny but almost all his jokes are about sex so it can be weird actually he likes to talk about sex a lot so sometimes he can come off as a****but he is really smart and the class isn't that hard. you have to read a lot! i would suggest this class for boys and not girls because sometimes he talks about things you don't want to hear/discuss
He really wants you to do well, and enjoys his job. Super smart, funny dude, down to earth. he is the best teacher i've had at college so far. definitely take him if your thinking about taking philosophy. there is reading and quizzes but they are easy and he reviews for tests. he smokes cigs but never smells, thats tight
Awesome&outstanding teacher. YES I do think he's cute(for a white guy)even w/beer belly. TEXT REQUIRED! Easy class he explains txt very well--he teaches the txt on students level to make it more interesting test=study guide--study the study guide&you'll get "A's" on exams. attend every class & read txt you'll get an "A" for the semester good luck!
Love, Love, Love this class and teacher. (he is adorable!)Very smart professor who teaches on the students level and uses examples that we can relate to. He is very funny too. (and not just "classroom funny") ;) Definitely take this class. I'm sure you will have a very rewarding experience.
A really great teacher. Hilarious. He's the kind of guy I would definitely be friends with. You have to read and pay attention in class, but it's interesting. You have to read for almost every class, and there's a quiz every week, but you don't know what day. The exams are easy, almost identical to the review sheet and there is a review session.
Very good teacher - one of the top 2 I've had at UTC. Funny, smart, nice, and helpful. Come to class to do well on quizzes - tests are easy if you study the review sheet - and he's super willing to help on the paper which is tough but interesting b/c you choose the topic.
I had no real interest in the subject prior to this class. He creates a great atmosphere in his classroom. He knows what he's talking about, and he's excited to help you! The reading is required, but the material is great. Get him! :)
This man can teach yall. Im a basketball player and I find it rather easy to comprehend to his lectures...one of the best teachers on campus. I'm a witness.
Doctor Ribiero is very knowledgable in his field. However, is somewhat apathetic to students needs. He can be a bit rude and abrasive in responses, but other than that, his class is easy if you pay attention, and interesting.
Very good professor. Tests come straight from reviews- so make sure to go to review sessions. Also, make sure to go to class because he does take attendance very seriously. He doesn't want you to just learn, but to add to the discussions as well...it really will make the class more interesting.
He's that one professor I'll still be talking about in 10 years. He explains things in a way you can relate to, he's funny and engaging, and if you read every night you will get a really big boost from the weekly reading quizzes. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
He's my favorite professor by far! I took his introduction to western philosophical traditions class and absolutely loved it! He's such an interesting guy to begin with! I didn't know what I was getting myself into at first because I knew nothing about the class but he made it very fun and interesting. Looking for classes he's teaching now.
He is a good teacher and does his best to keep you interested and entertained. However, the subject material is repetative and the arguments are redundant. If you are totally into that stuff then he's your guy, but for those who are not, he's not too hard. It just gets old
I have taken Dr. Ribeiro for 2 philosophy courses and he is by far one of the best professors I have had. Attendance is not mandatory, but he gives pop quizzes. I found the courses to be easy, material is presented very clearly and easy to relate to. Take him, you will not regret it.
He was DA BOMB. I went in this class like "yeah right philosophy?" and now because of Dr. Ribeiro I'm like "LETS PHILOSOPHIZE Yall!" on the real he's a great professor and you'll love the class cause he makes it funny. and hes just so hot.
awesome prof. wish i could take him again.
He was funny as all get out! Totally loved his intro to phil course. You can tell he tries to make it interesting. It's just a fun course. I feel like I learned a lot about life. Also he has tons of cool tid-bits of knowledge. Test right from reviews, easy as pie. But you learn a lot. really efficient and fun course. TAKE HIM! FA SHO!!!
What a boss. He is a great teacher, especially for such a hard subject to understand. After taking his class, all other classes seemed easy. May be a lot of reading and some quizzes, but he makes it very interesting. Great teacher.
Easy class. You need to read everyday because he gives pop up quizzes. He dropped two lowest quiz grades. I would recommend to take him. But, if you're an athlete, taking him is not a good idea. He doesn't give make up quiz, and you will get a 0 if you miss a class for a match.
Brian is the man. Philosophy is really difficult to understand and the readings are confusing but once you get in class he explains it perfectly and applies it to real-life situations. He takes a modern spin on old stuff. He's hilarious which makes him hotter than I'm sure he is haha his class was the highlight of my day
I was not interested in Philosophy at all before I took this intro class but he teaches it soo well. Sometimes the texts are hard to understand but in class he explains it extremely well and makes sure everyone gets it. Always relates it to real life. You do have to read cause he gives pop quizzes. Definitely recommend him
Ribeiro is a fairly good professor. He knows what he's talking about for sure, but even when he asks for class contributions&discussions his replies & reactions always make it seem like a dumb answer. I think that's kind of rude considering he requests the class participation. For a class 3 times a week, his strict attendance policy is ridiculous.
He is so cool. He is so laid back and funny! He finds hilarious ways to explain philosophy. He grades hard on the papers and there are lots of quizzes but I would take him again.
Professor Ribeiro made philosophy very interesting. I took this class for a gen ed, but it ended up being my favorite class. He makes philosophy very modern and relevant on interesting subjects. All classes are basically discussions for the full 50 minutes. Assigns short readings for every class and has 12 random reading quizzes.
He is so smart, knows what he's doing. I would recommend checking out his papers/essays/articles he has written and posted online. Make sure you read what he assigns, about one pop quiz a week but they are easy. He's also hilarious and adorable!
Gives a weekly pop quiz on readings. Not hard questions just general questions to make sure you read. He is hilarious and makes class interesting. Lectures the full 50 minutes. 3 tests and weekly quiz is the only grades.
You have to purchase all the textbooks on the website. Also, if you don't participate in the discussion threads it will kill your grade. The final isn't cumulative. Be prepared to read A LOT. This course would probably be better so you can get feedback in person so you can do better.
Check the weekly folder and watch ALL the videos! And read all the material he assigns! If you do that, and you study, you will do well. The videos are informative but also entertaining. Professor Ribeiro is by far the best professor I;ve taken for an online course!
This has been my absolute favorite professor at UTC so far. Brian is awesome and he's a really good teacher. It's incredibly interesting and his tests come right from the study guide he hands out. Details are important on his tests, so make sure you know what you're talking about. Pop quizzes weekly so attendance is mandatory. Would take again!
Overall great teacher and great class! He actually cares about his students and does a great job in teaching the material. Gives you midterm and final exam reviews that are the same as the tests. Just read the reading and watch the videos and you will do great! Would definitely recommend this online class.
I am a Philosophy major but I took this class for a Gen. Ed credit and I loved it. It was my very first Philosophy class, and is the best class I've taken so far. Brian is so funny and relatable. He likes new ideas from his students and loves to know what you're thinking. I would definitely love to take another class of his again. 10/10
This was a really quality class. If you show up the majority of the time you'll pass.
Lectures are interesting, relatable, and fun. If you go to class and do the readings it is an easy A.
Great summer online course! Lecture videos are enjoyable to watch. Course is clearly organized. And Prof Ribiero is very entertaining!
Brian is by far my favorite professor @ UTC. I took his intro-phil class (what made me pursue a PHIL minor), then again for Modern, and again for this special topics course. He gives detailed handouts everyday. DON'T LOSE THEM. He gives study guides to all tests and the answers are on those handouts. He is so fun & understanding. 10/10 person/prof.
One of the best professors I have ever had. He made the subject so interesting and easy to understand and discuss. His lectures were so engaging and made me want to come to class even more. I highly, highly recommend taking his class.
He is such a funny guy that makes a dull subject like philosophy interesting. He incorporates his life into the lectures to make it more relatable and to help students better understand his lectures. You need to read what he assigns though because you have a ton of pop quizzes throughout the semester. Overall good guy!
He is really passionate and Philosophy which makes his lectures super interesting. He does random pop quizzes based on the assigned reading for class to make sure everyone reads but if you just skim over the material youll easily make a 100. The tests are super difficult but he holds a review group and tells you all the answers.
Dr. Ribeiro's class is lecture heavy, but the lectures are really fun. This class made me re-evaluate how I see the world. There is a lot of reading and pop quizzes on them, so you do have to put in effort. The tests are only difficult if you don't study. Super funny and relatable guy and doesn't push his beliefs on anyone. Take him!
hes a great professor. Youll need all the books on the syllabus but you have time to get them and check and see if you can find pdf versions online before you get them. Do the reading or at least skim it because he gives (pop) quizzes over them but theres only 12 and he drops the lowest two. participation isnt really required. TAKE HIM
He is the best professor I have ever taken, hands down. He gives amazing lectures, has a great sense of humor, and you can tell he genuinely enjoys teaching.
Very interesting lectures
Really awesome professor! Hes really funny and makes class enjoyable. You read before every class and sometimes you have short EASY quizzes. Will definitely take him again!
I liked professor Rebeiro. He is pretty strict with attendance and phones, but he makes his lectures interesting and he is funny. Some of the reading was boring but it was a very doable amount, and he would talk about it in class which made it more interesting. Reading pop quizzes every week so you have to read. Go to review sessions before tests!!
Class is mainly open class discussions about chapters/readings done the night before from various books. The only grades are for pop quizzes, which are a hassle, and exams which are given a full study guide with exactly what's on the exams. He's a very easy going guy with a love for philosophy and is really awesome. Would highly recommend!
There are quizzes each week over the readings that he assigns. They're pretty straightforward from the text, so be sure to actually read them. He grades pretty hard on his exams, so be sure to also be thorough. You can tell he really likes philosophy and wants the best for his students. You definitely have to work for your grade.
Ribeiro seems pretty cool as a person, but I did not particularly care for him as a professor. I love philosophy, but I did not find most focuses in the course curriculum to be very interesting. This class is mostly reading literature and being tested on it; you do not really get a chance to explore what the content means to you.
i love the concept of philosophy, but i am not a huge reader. i would definitely look elsewhere if you are not a huge reader or very religious, as a lot of content causes you to defy your possible beliefs to see other views. the class was online for me, so it was just discussion boards and quizzes every week with a midterm and final.
Prof Ribeiro has been my favorite professor during my freshman year. His class is very dependent on reading, but that is something to expect going into a philosophy class. He is extremely passionate about his career. He is also very keen on having students interact with each other. I would recommend taking at least one of his classes.
Professor Ribero is one of the coolest professors I've had. Super humorous guy and wears cool shoes every day. Get ready to read every night of the week though with a quiz every friday. The grading criteria is very clear and the exams are very straight forward if you do the study guide he provides you with.
Prof Ribeiro made this class super enjoyable. He talks about interesting topics and is relatable/ funny. Reading quizzes are easy. His exams are super straightforward and he posts review videos that tell you all the answers you need to know. Definitely take his class if you can, he is great!!
Loved this class! He is strict about technology use and you have to read but great lectures that kept you engaged. Super funny, would definitely take it again. The tests are not multiple-choice, they are all open-ended.
I highly recommend taking this class with Ribeiro, he is a great professor.
Each class he provides a handout as a notes page so you do not necessarily need to take any notes. So if you are looking for a philosophy class that is generally pretty easy but are really interested in philosophy and would love to learn, I HIGHLY recommend Ribeiro.
Professor Ribeiro is a great professor, very laidback, always tries to make his lectures interesting. The books are required, although you can find them online. A short quiz was due every Friday at midnight. 3 exams that are taken in person. He's a bit tough on grading, but he gives a study guide with the exact questions on the exam the week before
Ribeiro centers his lectures less like a sermon and more like a discussion, which makes an interesting experience. He has a weird policy about leaving the classroom (even if temporarily). Occasionally cracks jokes but uses profanity in a balanced and comedic fashion. Grading criteria aren't clear, but he publishes a study guide video with answers
CONS: Lecture heavy, attendance is mandatory, tardies count towards absences once accumulated to a certain threshold PROS: Gives an outlined sheet where students can take class notes @ each meeting to help organize that days lecture
One of my favorite classes I have ever taken. Riberio is the most interesting lecturer I have had and I would definitely take another one of his classes. You have weekly quizzes which are super easy, you do need the books even if you don't read them. Tests are not hard and he gives you a study guide before each test (there's only 3) and no final.
He is my favorite professor and honestly I am sad to go. It was hard to pay attention sometimes because sometimes he rambles but he is so much fun! I never read any of the books and honestly did great in his class. He will always have a special place in my heart.
Always full of energy, and makes the class entertaining. He incorporates personal stories to keep us engaged, and make the material easy to understand. Attendance is a must, and points will be deducted for tardiness and phones in class. Follow his rules and you'll do just fine. Tests are easy, and weekly quiz only 5 questions.
He is a really good professor for this class, he always comes in with a strong excitement and passion for philosophy. I am not a huge philosophy person myself, but he tries to keep it interesting and engaging. There are 3 exams and each is worth 27% of your average and then you have 5 question weekly quizzes that are worth 19%.
Fantastic lectures! There are not a lot of grades aside from tests which are toughly graded, so if you're a good test taker, he's an easy A.
Professor Ribeiro is amazing. He made me want to switch my minor to philosophy. Very lecture heavy, but he's genuinely a good guy. He's funny & is open to considering your philisophical opinions, even if he doesn't agree. Only HW is a 5 question quiz on Friday's, super easy. There are 3 exams, but he gives a study guide with a video review!
I really have no notes; Ribeiro has found the right balance for the amount of coursework, topics, etc. He cares and wants to see his students succeed. Just go to class and don't forget to take notes I hardly studied outside of that and did perfectly fine.
Overall he is a good professor. I would take him again. He is very lecture heavy but he offers very good study guides for exams as they are very similar. Tests are mainly essay questions. Only assignments are weekly 5 questions quizzes and 3 exams. He is a very funny professor and I did enjoy this class
