Exams came in two parts: 25 multiple choice probs and an essay. Just read up and copy the notes from the overhead and have fun. Likes heavy metal music (Cannibal Corps, etc.) and has long hair. Really nice guy
Very enjoyable professor. He makes the information that he is teaching very interesting and he is an interesting person in his own right. He has a great sense of humour and killer music preferences (Pink Floyd, The Beastie Boys, etc).
haha, this class is so breazy. take it, listen to lecture and remember it, multi choice and the question is easy enough if you ask him in class about it-just put what he says-dont need to buy book at all-dont **** up the weekly 10pt m.c. quizes though
Rutishauser or CUTEishauser as we call him, is the best history teacher ever. He seems to know everything about all of the material covered as well as extensions of the material. The class is not too difficult, and incredibly enjoyable.
Awesome teacher, one of my favorites at city. He definately knows his stuff and his lectures are really good, must go to class and take notes. If you do that you should be okay with his quizzes and tests. Does not try to trick you
Loved him for History 1. Wish he also taught History 2. Outlines very clear. Scheduled quizes once per week. Maps and Digital pictures enhance lectures. WISH ALL TEACHERS TOOK "How To Teach" FROM HIM!
oooh- the BEST teacher ever--- and hes cute....what more could you want?? its like story time every class
Good teacher
great teacher, interesting material, easy class
Class kicked butt.
excellent professor, and so hot!!! i loved him, one of the best teachers i've ever had.

He's a really good teacher, all his lectures are interesting. If you really pay attention and go over his lecture notes you'll be alright. Yeah and like i saw the other comments..he is a cuttie.
Totally hot. I always wondered if I was the only one who stared at him in class. Easy to follow his lectures. Gives quizes often. But they are easy if you go to class
Easy class, just follow in lecture and it will come easy. Lecture is fun, he jokes around and make it interesting.
Awesome teacher! Made history interesting at 8am. Highly reccomend. Wish he taught all history classes. This is how teaching is done. Two thumbs way up. Weekly quizzes keep everyone on track.

Awesome teacher, I highly recommend anyone taking History 1 to take him!! His lectures are interesting and quiz are given at the end of the week on Friday. If you show up to class and take detail notes you'll be fine. You don't even need the book to pass this class and his teaching style is awesome! This is the way teaching should be done.
Dr. Rutishauser of the best teachers that I have ever had. It isn't too hard to pay attention to his class because he is so HOT!!!
Hes a really nice guy and will go out of his way to make sure you get it. Hes young and plays the bass in a band... what more can i say? 4-5 tests and an essay. drops your lowest grade. tells great jokes!

So hot... and such an awesome teacher.

He knows everything of the top of his head! he has been to all the place he talkes about and i learned soo much from him!

Seems very enthusiastic about his profession, which in turn, made me a little enthusiastic, though i didn't get an outstanding grade when I took the class. I have to say it was a cool class.
great class, great professor. It is well worth the time to take any class from this professor.
very cute!i enjoyed the class even though i didnt get a great grade i would take it over just to see him!
Very awsome teacher, very clear, obviously enjoys his profession, and is one of the few History teachers to make History extremely interesting. Top marks for Mr. Rutishauser, in fact he's so good, he deserves a raise. lol.
Great Teacher, made the class super interesting, just watch out for his tests
very cute!!! he really knows what hes talking about, so it makes it fun and interesting for the students to learn from him!!! He gets an A from me make it a plus since hes a cutie too!!

This class is so fun! His funny facts about our ancestors and his great sense of humor make the class enjoyable. Even if you're not that into history, you'd probably like his class. His energy and enthusiasm keep the class from getting boring and the fact that he's pretty cute doesn't hurt either. It'd be worth it to take any of his classes!
Good teacher, just don't miss a quiz
Cute, funny, and definitely knows what he's talking about. He likes Pink Floyd.
Very smart man and very attractive.
This guy is a really good teacher. Test on stuff he lectures. Sometimes would make jokes about history which makes the calss more intersting. I wished he taught other classes. Attend class, take good notes and you'll do great. I only had to read the book to answer the essay questions.
Awsome class and teacher. could have been very hard class.
He is a totally cool teacher. He wants everyone in his class to do well. It helps that he has a good sense of humor. You just have to show up and take notes to do well.
great class with great teacher. all quizzes from lectures, essays are from book/lecture but you get the questions in advance. couldn't of passed with any other professor.
Great professor! I found the class to be very interesting. Most of the test material he provides through in class lectures. Really enjoyed this class, would highly recommend it!
Super Hottie. Excellent Teacher.
good class. basically just take notes, re-read his outlines for the section and show up for class, then you're good to go. excellent teacher with a sense of humor. :)
Pretty hard class. First class I did not get an A in. Very enjoyable and interesting. Grade is only based on tests and quizzes. Has essay questions on test. Gives you 6 possibilities to study from, he will pick 4 that day that you can choose 1 and write about.
Your grade is based solely on tests & quizzes; no assignments & NO extra credit, which is pretty much a bummer for a slacker like me. If you're not a lazy ass, I highly recommend this professor. Although I got a ****ty C+, I did learn A LOT! And he is like a freakin' sexy beast! Seriously, we even call him Dr. McDreamy- haha. I'm not ashamed!
LOL @ McDreamy comment! Yeah, he is nice to look at, but you do learn stuff in this class as well. He really knows his stuff which is good, and he sometimes tells jokes... which tend to be semi-corny. He's really fair and will usually give you extra points if he messed up on something. But yes, he is McDreamy! ha-ha.
Oh, yes? Mr. Cutishauser? Magical. Enchanting: it's like storytime ev'ry class, not to mention he's dreamworthy. (Hot, sexy and adorable!!) Did I mention *magical*?
I hated history and always sucked at it. But he made me want to come to class, and not just to stare at him and dream about running away together, which I did. He would tell funny stories and made it really interesting. I never used the book, just took notes and listened. He tells you everything you need to know for the tests.
Mr. Rutishauser is a really good professor(I should Know I took 2 classes the same semester) lol.Just read the text/take notes and show up to class. He is nice to look at. Gosh I wish he instructed more classes!
i think that was the class, awesome teacher, total hotass, i loved his long hair, SPEAKS LATIN(drool) just show up and take notes on everything he says, crack open the textbook a little. He is Professor Cutishauser and if you want to check out professor Paul Gimmie More, he's also @ city. I have never been attracted to men like that in my life!
LOVED his class... Still remember everything and I took this class spring of 2000 :)
He's just weird
Very straight-forward. Tests based soley on lecture and textbook. He reviews essay questions before every test. You don't need to purchase the main textbook, just the sourcebook; just make sure to take really good notes during lecture. Show up to class everyday and it should be an easy A/B.
Simply the best history teacher at city college, end of discussion. Let me put it this way, I ran into him at a bar and felt compelled to buy him a beer. This was 2 or 3 years after I had taken his course, so it wasn't as if I was kissing ass for grade. He's just an awesome, incredibly knowledgeable teacher. Basically, hes too good for city college
just want to let everyone know that you may read that he is cute but yeah he is for a maybe 50 year old. he may be cute but he is not hot or dreamy like everyone here made him to be. and yes i am disappointed too lol
he really knows his stuff. class was easy got an B/drop the lowest test and quiz.got bored sometimes. hes not that good looking like everyone says.looks like David Cook from American idol LOL... overall class was OK..
Great Teacher, he is good to look at and his stories were amazing plus he has a great sense of humor. Just show up and take lots of notes and you will do fine.
This man is the only reason I ever survived History! He makes things very easy, tells corny jokes so you have something to refer to during the tests that are EASY! I think his emphasis is more on teaching and so his tests are simple but you learn a**** load of stuff in his class! I teach some of my students using his stories now! He's a gold mine!
His lectures are fantastic. He makes the subject really interesting and makes you want to listen and come to class. Print out the lecture guide he provides, it makes note taking and studying much easier. The best history teacher at Fresno City hands down!
AWESOME! HE WAS SO COOL! ONE OF THE BEST HISTORY PROFESSORS EVER! LOVED HIS CLASS. WOULD TAKE IT AGAIN JUST FOR THE HECK OF IT! RUTISHAUSER ROCKS! GO HISTORY!
Awesome teacher, hands down. He has his PhD, so he knows his stuff. He's been to just about every place he talks about (Rome, Athens, etc) so he has first hand accounts of the culture he's teaching. He kept the class alive, which was nice. Exams were easy as long as you study. Part multiple choice, part essay question. Highly recommend him.
The problem with this teacher is that he completely overloads students with information. The stories/pictures are cool, but he spends so much time talking about information not covered in exams. Difficult class. He expects you to remember every individual he mentions, even though only a few show up on tests. Hard to know what to study.
Professor Brian Rutishauser is just the BEST HISTORY PROFESSOR! The way he teaches is easy to follow; there's a real flow in the way he lectures about western civilization. It was a GREAT CLASS and he was a GREAT PROFESSOR.
Awsome teacher
Rutishauser is really a great professor. He really knows his stuff, and the class is actually interesting. Not to mention, he is definitely nice to stare at! Wayyyy cute. The only down side is that there is way too much information/names, and you're never sure what info is gonna be on the tests. Overall, fun class.
His tests are hard, there are so many random things you need to know. You could feel totally prepared and study really hard but bomb the mult.choice. Sucks.
He is a very good teacher. he knows the material really well and tells interesting stories. He does expect you to remember lots of names but NEVER dates. He is a very smart guy and almost has an answer to everything! It's really hard to get an A on the ssasy though because he expects you to remember a long story in DETAIL,you chose what to write on
Honors class required a paper due every friday which got annoying after awhile. He is a great teacher though who really knows alot about history and teaches you alot. His tests come with 25 multiple choice pluss essay question, he gives you essay questions ahead of time to prepare for. He is a nice guy and a good teacher.
Very easy to understand and a very helpful teacher that knows what he'stalking about.
GREAT teacher. He really knows his stuff, and he is very enthusiastic about it. I took the honors course, and we had a two page paper due every Friday. The first part of the test (multiple choice) is easy, but make sure for the second test (essay) is VERY detailed. He wants them detailed.
Great professor, silver fox. It's easy to learn from someone who is passionate about what they're teaching. Make sure you study a lot for the exams. The essays need to be extremely detailed with more information than seems necessary (although it's history so I suppose details are important).
Great teacher. Just make sure to come to class and read the book.
He probably used me as an example on why you should come to class. I went from an A to a D in the last two weeks of school. Overall, he is a great teacher that teaches with passion. It was my own fault for not coming to class. Take him, you won't be disappointed.
Rutsihauser is the by far the best history teacher I have had in my life!!! And one of the best teachers overall! Pay attention to the lectures (on study guide), take notes, reading is optional (he rarely uses it), 10 qs quiz every friday, 4 tests (no final) you can prepare essay before and just memorize it for the test. Easy A! He is amazing!!
Great class, always get a laugh in this class
Very interesting class. Very good professor
Really cool teacher, Probably the best History Teacher on the west coast. He's been to all of the places he's teaching about and keeps you interested, you have to go to every class pretty much if you plan to get a good grade, but it's not a bother to go to this class everyday, it's really fun, and he keeps you laughing.
Best history teacher in Fresno!
Very knowledgeable individual with lots of charisma. He keeps you interested and wanting to learn about the subject. His obvious love for the subject is infectious and makes you love it in turn.
Loved this teacher. He lectures almost like he's telling a story. He keeps you engaged and wanting to learn more. He's been to a majority of the places he talks about and show pictures of his experiences there. His multiple choice portions of test and quizzes are easy, essay questions need to be answered in a lot of detail. ETCguy grades them so go
Great history teacher! I don't know what it is, but the way he lectures keeps you interested. Anyone can pass the class, just go to the ETC sessions offered, study for the weekly 10 question quizzes, and you should do fine.
Gives too many information in one day so it has me confused all the time. If your are not good at writing properly than don't bother taking this class; i am bad at that and i know ima fail his class.
Very interesting class and explains the subject matter in a way that's easy to understand. He has to condense thousands of years into a few weeks but if you pay attention you can get the big picture.
Overall this was a good class and the teacher was incredibly smart. The only problem I had with this class was it seemed impossible to get an A. I tried super hard and never made any progress do to his extremely hard grading. So as a result I gave up and settled with a B. If you are planning on taking his class just realize it will take some work.
Great teacher theirs four exams half question half essay. quizzes every week. not easy but i highly recommend this class.
Great professor. I took him for Western Civ, Ancient Greece and Early Islam. He is extremely knowledgeable about every subject he talks about in class and explains things well, using modern metaphors. All of this classes have 4 exams (one is dropped) a quiz every Friday (lowest dropped) and a 6-8pg research paper. Book is necessary in my opinion.
There is a lot of names and terms to remember for the tests. 4 tests 25 questions and an essay part. The book helps a lot, especially the study guide at the end of each chapter. Mr. Rutishauser is very smart and knows his stuff. Take lots of notes, and go to tutor, He helps on essays. 10 question quiz every Friday, don't take them lightly
By far the best teacher I have ever had, he is the most knowledgeable teacher I have ever met. If you are a history major he is a must.
Loved loved loved his class! One of the best history teachers I've ever had. Knows his stuff! Do your part and you'll love his class.
He is a great history instructor that knows his stuff. If you fail this class it's because your lazy, and undetermined. Pay real close attention, pass all his quizzes, and exams and you'll be set.
This class is not an easy A. work for it. Don't skip the lectures because half of the stuff he talks about is on the QUIZ. Pay close attention in class. The other half is from the reading. Can't read? utilize the chapter outlines that are available online but do not rely on it. The etc guy wants lots of details on essays. I didnt like him.
It was harder than I thought. My midterms t least half the class had dropped. Quiz every Friday and every point counts at the end. Four tests and a term paper. Taking History 1 before this course might help many. Test are multiple choice and written, he grades essays very hard. This class is NOT for people who want an easy grade. I got a ''C''
loved the lectures. go to etc for help and extra credit.
He is a handsome man. He spents time with students outside of classes for help on various topics related to classwork. For an A in his class you really have to read the chapters everyday, and study at least once a week on your lectures. Your essays will have to be quite detail, and clear if you want to pass your exams. Overall, I got a 93 and 96.
Professor Rutishauser is very engaging during lectures, and sometimes cracks funny jokes here and there to entertain the class. The subject was very interesting but the chapters MUST be read ahead of time before the quizzes to score 100%. If you don't read the chapters or review lecture notes, passing the class is highly unlikely.
Great professor! Cracks some jokes during lecture. Interesting subjects at times. IF ATTENDING ETC, don't bother to purchase book! Dale (ETC Instructor) gives you all answers to the weekly quizzes & exams. Exams consist of 25 multiple choice & 1 essay question that you choose out of 4. Just pay attention. Have a question ask for help, he's there!
Lectures are good, go to ETC and you will be fine .
Just study hard and youll pass his class
The lectures are great, it's like he's telling the story of Rome, not just the history. As long as you take notes in class and look over the chapter, you're golden. The semester paper seems tough, but once you have the sources, it's actually kind of fun to tell the story yourself.
He is a very helpful, and fun teacher. He will answer your questions, and give you a little more background so you don't feel lost. Don't be discouraged by the written responses on the exams, they are very easy.
took him for hist1 and hist3. he is a great teacher, must show up for lectures. quiz every Friday but they are off his lectures. makes you earn that A
Mr. R is a great professor who is really passionate about the subject he teaches. He knows a lot of interesting, funny stories that make his lectures entertaining. He pretty much lets you know from the start what he expects and how grades will be determined. There is no homework in his class, but there are quizzes every Thursday. Great instructor!
I have taken this professor for Hist 1, 3, 17, and 18. Each class is not enough words to describe other than he is an amazing instructor. He provides humor and he teaches the subject like he is telling a story. I'm truly grateful to have had him for history. Anyone who needs credit or loves history please take him! Also, Hist 17 is mind blowing.
Good teacher! He's very straight forward and there are no surprises. Just follow his curriculum and do the reading, and you'll get an A. He does genuinely want to see you succeed, if you put in the effort. He's actually been to a lot of the places he teaches about, so that also makes his lectures more interesting.
hardest class I've ever taken, lots work required, great lectures w/ lots of his own pictures. 0 HW, 1 quiz a week(10multiple choice), a total of 4 exams(25multiple choice/1 essay), tough grader but Offers some extra credit if you attend ETC. willing to read practice essays before exams if emailed before an exam, will give excellent feedback.
Only components for grading are weekly quizzes and 4 exams. Expect about half the questions on the quizzes to actually be covered before it's given. Questions on the quizzes are very specific and can be very difficult. Exams are timed and a 5 paragraph essay minimum is expected along with 25 multiple choice. Horrible experience.
Loved this class! It is tough but worth it. His grading system is straight forward - 1 quiz per week, 4 exams and extra credit for ETC. I remember correctly, he drops your lowest quiz and exam score. Mr. Rutishauser is a great teacher, very nice (and easy on the eyes) and his lectures are actually interesting. I never missed his class!
Dr. Rutsihauser is a nice guy and he knows his history but his teaching style is frustrating. His essay grading criteria is unclear and he requires iClickers for weekly quizzes (these clickers frequently malfunction.) Also, lectures are very long and boring. Not a hard class, just a drag to get through.
His class is all about reading and taking notes. His exams are half essay question and half multiple choice, roughly 5 per semester. Also, weekly quizzes on the book, before he teaches you the material! Overall, he is a nice teacher who is open to questions, just be prepared to work a bit.
He is an ok professor. Very long, boring lectures. Never has any kind of conversation with the class, just lectures at you for the entire class period. Only grade based on quizzes and exams. Grading on written portion of exam is very unclear. Once you get the hand of it, it is not hard to pass, but is time consuming and boring.
Boy let me tell you, do I hate history. But let me tell you also: this man LOVES history and its AWESOME. Hes got great personal stories, surprisingly funny history jokes/stories, and he really loves what he teaches. Hes taken expeditions to many historical sights, so hes pretty dang credible. I never read ahead, but it sure does benefit on quizzes
History was never my favorite subject but I needed this class for my major. He is by far one of the most tough graders I have EVER had! He literally grades every single thing on your essay question on test. He will make you feel really dumb!
If you want a professor who lectures every single day, no powerpoint, and lectures on topics that AREN'T on the online quizzes, and lectures on topics that you will not recognize on the test, then yes, take Brian Rutishauser.
He's chill. Expect a lecture heavy class. There are 4 exams which has two parts: half multiple choice & half essay question (essays are graded by a different person). Very strict on attendance. The only outside assignments are the online quizzes (15 of them, 10 questions each). Not a hard class. He's helpful and knows his stuff.
I had three classes with him and each class was great. (Classes being Hist 1,3,20). He teaches well and is able to portray history in an open end experience where you learn as much as you care to. Attendance is needed to pass the class. Overall great teacher, able to ask questions, clear syllabus, and able to reach after class. Great teacher.
Rutishauser is what I aspire to be. Knows what he's talking about, but never makes it seem like he's superior because of it. I've taken so many history courses, as it is my major but also for the joy of it so I've seen experienced a variety of profs and their methods, but Rutishauser is the only one I've returned to.
Rutishauser is so knowledgeable and interesting to talk to when it comes to History. This is the third class I have taken of his and I have really enjoyed him. He seriously knows what he's talking about. He's a super nice guy and gives you great feedback. With the writing portion of the exams, make sure to include as much information as possible.
One weekly, online assignment, four tests. Tests are easy to study for: One essay question you're given in advance, and vocabulary words. It's a good class if you need the credits for a degree, and lectures can be fun sometimes too, just because they're easy to follow and usually flows like you're being told a story.
Best teacher at Fresno City.
I know that maybe I'm not the best student and what not, but honestly, I had difficult because his lectures were very disorganized, didn't really know where to read, and no powerpoint. This class was very difficult for me, if you have better luck, good for you.
I took this course because I have a huge passion for history and needed a class to fill up some time. I came into this expecting the norm history class experience but that is far from what I got. He teaches in a way that makes it feel like a real story and always leaves you wanting to hear what happens next. Overall one of my favorite teachers.
Great professor really enjoyed his class, his lectures were amazing I wish I could take another one of his courses
The professor lectures all day MAKE SURE you are writing and more especially anything he writes on the board!!! Exams are 2 parts : vocab & a essay question. There is 4 essay questions and you get to chose which ever one you want to response to. There is also quizzes on canvas. Overall easy class & thats coming from someone who dislikes history
The best history teacher at this school, I am a history major so this was my strength, but it was fair even for someone who is not a history major. Take him for all your history classes if you can. His tests are very fair, study and you will score a fair grade. If I could have him for all my history classes my life would be easier. Cool dude.
4 exams: 25 definitions and an essay question. gives essay questions ahead of time. take notes you will need them to form your essay. read ch. before class to understand the lecture better. online quizzes are easy. send in essays early to prof. so you know you are on the right track. great lectures, love his stories, really knows his stuff
Very boring class. He literally lectures the minute class begins till the last minute it ends. Grade depends on how good you do on the exams. Exam is half multiple choice and other half is an essay. Tough grader on the essay portion but the multiple choice is easy because it's literally only the key terms from the book. Just study the key terms.
He was straightforward. He would post short lectures a day. The only work would be a discussion every week, a question that by watching the lessons you can answer with no problema 10 question quiz every week on the chapter. You have a whole week to work on the discussion and the quiz. The exams are super comfortable. I recommend him his easy.
He gave great lectures and put videos up online. Gave the class an outline of the topics covered which made note taking much easier. Gave feedback on papers and online discussion posts which was helpful. Super knowledgeable in his field.
I took Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, and I absolutely love Rutishauser. I would take one of his classes again in a heartbeat. Super interesting lectures! Clear instructions for discussions, tests, & essays. One of the most accommodating and caring professors I've had during the pandemic. Clearly loves and cares about the material he's teaching!
Easy online class. Little to no effort required just pay attention
Easy class, especially online. Discussions and quizzes every week. Four exams, half multiple choice and half essay. The work isn't really that much as long as you keep up with the lectures.
Probably my favorite class and professor, his lectures are so interesting that class seems to go by pretty fast. He also really prepares you for the tests and gives good feedback. Nice guy! Hope to take another class of his.
If you go to class take good notes there's no way you can't pass his tests are not based on his lectures they are key terms but the essay portion is. Very easy class good lectures
Professor Rutishauser is a gem, FCC is lucky to have him!! One essay he assigns in the middle of the semester. His exams aren't hard. 25 key terms multiple choice and a essay section. HW is posting in discussion boards weekly that prepare you for the essays on test. Just be detailed, take good notes and you'll be good!
I really enjoyed his class and loved the lectures. They were very interesting and entertaining. His assignments were just class discussions and he gives good feedback and our exams were an essay and multiple choice portion of the key terms. Take notes for sure! I wish I could take his class again! Very cool guy.
I loved Mr. Rustishauser, the class was extremely informative. Notes are pretty easy to take as long as you understand that he gives an outline. You write the short outline and then listen and write small bullet points of things he says about the topic (that's what I did). Quiz and discussion once a week (nothing too hard if you pay attention).
Dr.Rutishauser was my favorite history teacher so far. you have to show up and i would suggest taking good notes, use quizlet for studying the key terms for the exams on the chapters you read. Also you have two parts on exams, multiple choice and essay. the essay portion is at home, you have to do the essay portion or you will fail automatically.
I've taken two of Professor Rutishauser's classes and he's the best history teacher I've had, very educated and informative. His lectures always hold my interest, it doesn't at all feel like he's reciting from a textbook like most history teachers I've had. Just do the assignments and take notes and you'll pass, a generally easy class.
Easy class and easy to learn from, lectures are normally around 20 min but he keeps them pretty interesting. Make sure to turn in your discussion board on wed so he can give it a review before actually submitting for a grade ! very nice teacher almost feels like your sitting in a room with him during his lectures.
Great Professor, makes class interesting. as long as you take good notes and read the textbook the class will be very easy.
Prof. Rutishauser is among the best educators I've ever had in all my years of schooling. The man is extremely informed and, most importantly, passionate about history. I have taken both the Ancient Greece and Rome classes that he teaches and had a blast. Lectures are actually fun and he is a very understanding individual should any issues arise.
Dr. Rutishauser is passionate about his work, and it's evident in his lectures. If you love history, or at least a smidge interested in it- this class will capture you. He had a book that was "mandatory" for class, but I honestly didn't purchase it and passed with an A+. Don't waste your money, wink wink. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CLASS.
Professor Rutishauser is an excellent instructor! It's a very easy A, it would take effort NOT to pass the class. As the other posts say about the text book, they are right. I went strictly based off his online lectures and got A+. One discussion and quiz per week, 4 exams and that's it! One of the BEST professors at FCC!
Rutishauser is such a good professor, I do not like history just because I don't really understand it but he made me find interest into history since he teaches very good. The final for his class is just the last chapters test which is easy. I would REALLY recommend taking him.
