Brian is very approachable and works hard to make sure he is fair to his students. He loves to leave the reading to the student and have great discussions in class. He understands the challenges that working students face.
This professor is awesome. He is very friendly and a pro and what he does. He could out speak anybody. You learn alot from this guy. And he is a cutie also
KNOW the textbook for exams, he isn't kidding around when he tells you that. Assignments aren't that bad. Pretty relaxed guy, would take from him again.
To best describe Prof Schumacher I will compare him to actor Liam Neeson.Aside from sharing an appearance, the two carry with them: an authoritative presence,an inspiring wisdom, and a calm and patient tone.Despite my differing political views he is quite clever in his method of plugging crown corps. Nonetheless, a great prof! Educ beyond the text
Brian is amazing. He's fun. He's well informed and definitely knows the material. His marking for the group projects was fair and he is a very easy marker!! If you hand in all your assignments and study at least a little bit (do the online quizzes he recommends!) for the tests, you'll do great. If you talk too much...he ignores you! It's hilarious!
easy easy easy easy easy
Good teacher. His marking is mysterious - done in a black box. He does not supply a marking rubric. Dont work too hard for those who usually work hard. I worked hard and only got 5% more than the slackers. That was the same with other hard workers. Also, know the text for tests. Also, the way he grades participating is not accurate.
Brian was a great teacher. He made this subject(common sense) intresting. He wasn't too clear will the group project assignment, but once you talk to him about it he will point you in the right direction to get a high mark. The textbook is usful for the tests, just understand the overall concepts in each chapter. Very helpful teacher.
Nice guy, actually pretty funny, interesting lectures, fair tests. Just one gripe: Test instructions are "Be as concise as possible. Point form is ok. List and describe (or something similar) 7 points per questions. Everyone gets a 6! He will only tell you that you didn't have the "perfect answer" so he couldn't give you a 7.
Brian was a great prof. He was very funny and layed back. He knows his stuff. The group project is a little hazy, but once you understand it, it is a breeze. You would think the test would be easy, but you do need to study. For the person who said he doesn't give 7/7 on short answer, he does, as long as you get the answer right :)
I wish he was a full time prof because he's definitely better than some of the full timers. His class was weird in the way that I worked alot (especially on the group projects), got awesome grades, learned a lot, and enjoyed the entire process. Not many profs can make that happen. You need to take 205 with him because he is the best!
Best prof I have ever had. He makes his lectures easy to pay attention to as he is a great speaker. Helps to make students comfortable with speaking infront of everyone. I was nervous about standing infront of everyone at first. By the final presentation it didn't bother me one bit. Take classes from Brian Schumacher.
I can't say I learned a lot because this class is mostly common sense, but nonetheless, Brian is a great prof. He tries to make sure that every student is a good public speaker by the end of the semester. I agree with the people that said the group project is not very well explained in the beginning but once you get started on it, it's a breeze!
Brian is a great prof and has a lot of useful information to share with his students. I do not enjoy all the group projects that he has us do. For people that have a job, and take 4 other classes with projects, it was impossible to co-ordinate group meetings and I struggled to do so. I also got into an undesirable group which made this class hell.
This class is just too much work. There seems to be something due every week
Brilliant Professor, interest and fun class. Take it from him and no one else. You will be very happy with the course!
Awesome. (And I can't believe he doesn't have one of those chili-pepper things yet.)
Awesome Prof, makes content extremely interesting. Puts all the slides online but he made you want to come to class because it was fun and interesting. Take a class from Brian!
Great prof. If you have a chance take a class from him. Cares about his students and tries to keep class interesting. Has real world knowledge also, not one of those prof's who have never been outside of the classroom before. Very helpful
Really good prof, classes are interesting. He is a very fair marker. The only bad thing about him is that he's a Patriots fan!
pretty good prof, has lots of great examples and stories to help you understand the material better. tends to fly through the slides in class, so make sure you look over those and the textbook before exams. hes nice and tries to engage the class in discussions and such. would probably take another class from him if I get a chance
GREAT SPEAKER! HAS BUSINESS EXPERIENCE - NOT JUST BOOK KNOWLEDGE. TESTS ARE STRAIGHT FROM THE TEXT BOOK SO READ IT AND KNOW IT WELL. BEST PROF SO FAR. SIGNED UP FOR ANOTHER CLASS THIS SEMESTER. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. ONLY PROBLEM WAS A CHANGE TO THE MARKING SCHEME DURING LAST WEEK OF CLASS.
Class average was 74. He is really interesting to listen too. Although class is sort of redundant as he only tests from the text.
Favourite Prof so far. Make sure you start picking your group on the first day because there is a heavy load of group work in this class. But he's easy going and interesting to listen to. Very approachable if you need extra help. Tests are always right out of the slides and textbook so read them and you're set! Awesome Guy!!!!
extremely nice guy! he makes business interesting and uses good examples to help us understand.. he has 2 case study quizzes in the whole semester (gives a warning to students anyway)
If you aren't a business student, I wouldn't recommend him. I barely understood half the stuff he was talking about and basically paid my tuition to read the text book. Sure, he can get a discussion going, but he doesn't test on any of that. And the slides he tests on he goes through in 15 minutes.
He is definately a great prof. If you miss a few days of class it is no big either. The tests are completely out of the text, but going to class is interesting. He is a great guy, is always willing to help out the students, and although is a little.. disorganized at some points, he knows what he is talking about inside and out.
Great guy. Take his class you are not going to regret it. But always read the assignment before the class.
He was not as good as I was told but alright. He makes you APPLY concepts instead of memorizing them. Class is pointless as he tests strictly on text. It's frustrating that he gives 0 hints for tests but he is easy going and marks easy on the group project. Overall, I slightly recommend him. Be ready to hear the word ?presumably? 20 times a class.
Alright professor. Know the textbook inside and out. He is a hard marker on the midterm/final but the presentation and case studies will help your mark. ok prof, but not as great as I expected. If you can take this class from another I would recommend doing so.
Great Proff to have! He marks very easy on the presentations and his final/midterm is pretty easy. Just make sure to know the text book inside and out! His notes that he puts online are only a summary of what you need to know so make sure to be comprehensive of the text book details.
He is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I had absolutely no interest in business (had to take it for my major) but he made it seem interesting. Everything he hinted at that he said would be on the final/midterm wasn't at all. Basically know the textbook REALLY well and you will ace the class. p.s: he really wanted a hot tamala :)
He is an old guy. If u r Canadian, then his class is the most easy class for you. This class is more English & memorizing stuff, no numbers or Business. Will not recommend to International students. If u r international student, u will lose in his lecture, coz he talks about local Canadian history which you never know.
Most interesting business class I have ever taken. I enjoyed coming to class. Very interesting to listen to, and also a very practical class. Lots of presentations.
Great prof! Comes to class well prepared and has a clear message for every class. Tests are fair (MC are hard but Short Answer is marked easily). There are a lot of assignments and he doesn't do the best job of explaining them but marks fairly easy. The worst thing is his bad memory which led to a couple mixups in class. Tests strictly on textbook.
Brian is a great Prof. He's available for help if needed outside of class, and responds to e-mail promptly. He marks fairly, and the class is overall pretty easy. The group project can be time-consuming, but it's not hard to get a good mark. This class gets you good at presenting! Study your textbook for the midterm/final, and you'll be good to go.
He was the best prof I have ever had. The project was very time consuming but it was marked fairly easy. It is important to attend. Questions about group presentations on the midterm and final. If you attend class and get your group project done a high grade can be expected.
Awesome guy and an awesome prof. Had him in 205 and 260 and would take another class from him if i could!
Good prof. Very knowledgeable on various aspects of business. Relates often to personal experience to support point. Engages class very well. Although often get of topic. Lecture note posted online. Beware of pop quizzes so read chapters prior to class. Tests are fairly easy. Good prof for introductory class.
Good prof. He engages the class in discussion, lots of talk about relevant/current ideas. Don't be fooled by the lack of textbook use because the exams are based almost solely on the text. Over all a good guy, recommended!
Brian's class required more effort than other sections of Bus 205. The level of information and practical content was much higher - I highly recommend you take 205 from Brian - the extra work is worth it in spades.
Horrible???Avoid him?
He is a nice guy, weekly quizes so make sure you read the chapters. Short answer questions are mostly based on class discussion and you dont cover the book very much in class so it is important you read it on your own time. Smart guy and a pretty interesting class as basic as it is. I would recommend him over the other BUS 100 teachers forsure
Very nice prof, he give alot of mc tricky questions but the short answers are super easy. i recommend him....
I loved Brian!! He was super helpful and really clear on what he expected from assignments and the final presentation. I found the weekly quizzes to be the hardest part of the class but that's only because I didn't read the text beforehand. If you read the text and go to class there is no way you won't get a good mark.
Brian was awesome! Take him!!
Brian is okay. I feel that the weekly quizzes are way too time consuming. I sometimes feel he expects too much for an introductory level course.
Lectures were good, however he takes forever to get grades posted and reply to emails. He can be frusterating in that sense
Awesome prof. I like his teaching style. ez going. nothing complex. thumbs up for him
Brian is a nice guy and seems very passionate about this course. However, that being said. He seemed to put his other endeavours before his students. Very few e-mails that I sent to him were ever returned and if he did return an e-mail, it was simply a yes or no. As a student that pays for this course, some interest in my success would be nice.
Professor Schumacher is an amazing speaker, he is great at engaging the class and stimulating thoughts and ideas. I enjoyed this class very much but he is quite stingy with short answer, papers, and presentation marks. Marks are slow to get back and he is hard to get a hold of, but he is the associate dean so it is understandable.
Excellent professor. He is a very engaging speaker with a ton of knowledge. I learned a lot.
A very enthusiastic and knowledgeable professor. I enjoyed his class very much. This was a night class, and after work it is generally hard to pay attention, but this prof made the class entertaining. I highly recommend this professor.
Engaging, approachable & easy to listen to, makes a 3 hour lecture easy. Yes he doesn't answer emails quick, or ever, but his teaching style makes up for it. One of the best, if not the best prof at UoR. If more profs took a page from his book and we would have a much better business program. Exams- straightforward, from textbooklecture.
Brian is super personable and easy to talk to. His lectures are always engaging and he encourages student interactions. Having said that, he is not very clear on the assignments and expectations. However, his class was so enjoyable that I would take him again and definitely recommend him.
Not very specific on assignments very vague on what he's looking for. Additional marks by trying to get you to go to seminars and involved. Very much into getting students to sign up for things going on. But he does have interesting lectures good speaker a little off topic at times. Exams it's like some of the stuff comes from no where
He didn't let me present my group project because I was the only one who showed up to class the day of presentations. Then he threatened to fail me because I didn't present my project. I met with him in his office where he told me that he basically lost two of my assignments. Forgetful, condescending, and stupid. His class was like a guessing game.
he is okay. i wouldn't want to be in his class simply because he is not accommodating at all. he is an easy grader but not efficient in marking. 2 of my group members who literally copied the assignments from someone else got high 90s and worked for 2 days and barely got an 80. dont' expect too much from him. usually not available to meet you
Full of himself. Ineffective lecturer, and he does not care about his students. Prob the biggest ego at the U of R! Quizzes were pointless and his exams were out of right field at times. Avoid!!!
Felt as though his lectures were irrelevant and attending class was unnecessary. Really didn't enjoy him as a prof. I've had way better professors who are actually willing to meet. Just read the text book as that is what is going to be teaching you.
Brian was a great prof. His lectures were relevant to the REAL WORLD which is what is important. They make sense. His exams are all from the text book which makes them easy to study for. He is understanding and cares about his student. I would definitely recommend him to EVERYONE.
Worst prof in the school of business. Thinks he is a rock star but has no real business experience. Doesn't even have a business degree!!! Avoid. It's a waste of tuition.
Much of class is taught by guest speakers but when he taught it was engaging.
Took BUS100 with Brian. It was a great class. Keeping up with current business/economic topics on your own time will certainly help you with understanding and relating to inclass lectures. Do all the required readings, show up to classes and participate in in in class lectures and you shouldnt have a problem passing this class. Do NOT show up late.
Brian is the only prof I have taken that will truly make you think differently after you take his class. He doesn't teach content for more as he tries to get you to take something more from his lectures. Lacks in clarity as he wants you to think for yourself.
Brian is a great professor. And I am not just saying that because he shows his students his reviews on here the first day of class. He knows his stuff and doesn't use slides. Put in a solid effort and you will get a good grade. You can't expect to pass if you don't work at this class. He likes those who engage and participate in class discussion.
I had Brian for Business 100. I found his lectures to be engaging. He seems intimidating but if you get to know him personally he is a really nice guy. Do not start studying for the midterm a night or two before! You need to prepare a few days ahead of time! Overall I thought he was great, don't be intimidated by him, he just wants the best for you
Hard to predict what was going to be on the midterms. Had many interactive lessons instead of just boring slides. To be successful in this course, you must (must, must, must) both thoroughly read the textbook and come to pretty much every lecture. He can be fairly vague at first, but will always answer e-mails in a timely fashion.
Had Brian for BUS100, really understanding guy as well as very interactive lectures. Didn't really explain assignments/papers and the online resources aren't very useful. Midterms are unpredictable and difficult. Overall, I liked Brian but he could be a little more helpful when it comes to assignments.
Had him for bus100. Brian is a nice guy to approach, open to concerns, and his way of teaching is engaging. Tho he can be a bit out of topic sometimes, but his lectures will actually connect you to the real world. Use of textbook is a need for his class. His exams may be challenging. As long as you attend the class, pay attention, ull be ok.
Brian's lectures are engaging and allow you to take what you learn and apply it practically. Lot of guest lecturers for this course. If it was just Brian teaching, expectations might be clearer. Marking was harder for this class but Brian is accessible for help. You will thank him after its over because he gives you an opportunity to really learn.
This is a hard class. Read the textbook B4 class and don't be ashamed to go and ask for more marks (if you can justify it) Read the criteria carefully sometimes there are discrepancies in formatting. Go to class, be engaged and go to office hours questions from the textbook. use the GLC bus tutor! you can do fine if you do the work
I loved Brian as a prof. His marking schemes and assignment instructions are a little complicated and not always thorough but other than that he's great. Show up to class on time and you'll do great.
The lectures were always applied to real life. The only downside is that the lectures were sometimes not relevant to what you would be graded on (like on midterms or final exams). Brian responded to emails extremely fast and was available for any questions. Marking was real shady as the rubrics were crazy and you couldn't guess what mark you got.
Brian is a very engaging prof. Do all readings and preps if you want to do well and earn his respect. Do not show up late. Exams are based on the textbook content, so be sure to read and take detailed notes. Easy class if you come prepared to learn!
Brian was probably one of the most disrespectful and worst professors I've ever had. He never responds to emails and his tests are heavy. I learned more from the textbook book than in his class. Also, during class discussion's he only seems to think only his opinion is right. Pay attention to his guest speakers because you will be tested on them.
Most disrespectful prof I've ever had. If you're taking bus 100 take it with someone else. Email replies took weeks and exams had nothing to do with what was learned in class.
I had mixed feelings about Brian's class. Make sure you read the syllabus and do all the textbook readings otherwise you will not pass. He did often reference rubrics for projects but failed to provide the rubric which makes major papers a tad difficult. But he appreciates effort and understanding of the material. Also, participate in class!!
Make sure you show up on time. Make sure to buy the textbook and read it. All of the questions from the midterm and the final come from the textbook. More specifically if you want the questions that he uses come from the online questions from the online textbook. Make sure to show up to guest lectures because tests questions come from them.
Doesnt lecture in his own class. Guest lecturers in every class. Why is he here. Temper tantrums when people show up late. Bully Seems uninterested / disconnected. Doesnt recognize when one partner carries entire group project. Tests are decent. But if you dont read the book youre done for, as he doesnt lecture. Nice guy, avoid.
Brian and the lecturers prepare you for the real world. If you cant handle Brians class, I recommend leaving business school cause you wont be able to handle anything; not just in business but in all facets of life for that matter. Hes one of the best amongst many more in that department.
worst
bad experience
Brian is a good professor for the people who want to do something new in life. Rest of the lazy can ignore this class. Many students found the class for their own laziness but still blame the professor. He gives assignments and sometimes group discussions and I really liked it because I gained lot of confidence. Attend the class for extra marks.
The absolute best. Genuinely cares about his students. All of his assignments and activities are designed to help you succeed in the future. Lectures are fun but make sure you buy the textbook, tests are 100% made from it.
Honestly 10/10. He makes lectures really fun and it doesn't feel like I'm even in a class. I took a 3 hour class with him and time goes by so fast. Really nice and an awesome teacher. Also a very fair class. Take a class with him if you can!!!!!
Brian was amazing, was nervous for the 3-hour summer lecture but it flew by. He made class fun and engaging. I honestly feel like he has improved my public speaking skills (Lots of presenting). The midterm was easy (provided you read textbook), assignments were relevant and quick, and the final was actually fun. Overall enjoyed his class
A little hard to approach. He will give extra questions to let you show you join the class but he never gives any answers. You can't know the mistakes you made. If you could do well in studying by yourself without any worksheets and examples, you will be happy with his lectures.
His tests are brutally hard. Many questions are from textbook but he never taught them. So hard course and worse professor.
Brians a good guy and great prof. He lectures using real world examples. If you read the textbook you can clearly understand the material he puts forth throughout the lecture. Dont be soft or he will chew you up, be willing to exit your comfort zone, participate in class discussions, show up to class on time, read the textbook and do your work.
Brian is a great prof. He brings his real world business expierence to the lectures which helps relate the textbook content. His teaching style is not for everyone but for those that can handle it, he's an excellent choice. If you want a class where you will actually learn something, take business 100 with Brian
hella good guy. if attention is paid during class, you'll do well. also ensure you pick productive partners for group work.
Pretty good prof overall. His lectures aren't slides straight out of the textbook, they are real life examples from each chapters out of the textbook. He uses groups for the majority of the projects. He is willing to talk with you if you have questions about you're exams.
Brain is an amazing professor and I would highly recommend taking him for any of your classes. His lectures are super engaging and entertaining. He relates all of the textbook chapters to real life situations! He does not read from the textbook so you will need to read it on your own time. No complaints!
Brian is a great prof. His lectures are fun and engaging. I would definitely recommend showing up for his classes and studying hard for the exams. All in all Mr. Schumacher is definitely a good teacher and I would recommend taking his classes.
i absolutely loved Brian's class. i was scared at first but his classes were amazing and I enjoyed the vibe from the class. I'm definitely taking Brian's 205 class. this time to have an A. If you're ready to read and discuss with your mates you'd enjoy it. take his class
Mid terms and final were very doable if you read the textbook, especially if you did the adaptive test prep on mindtap; the resource got me 80+ on exams. However, the written assignments had vague instructions and he barely explained his marking scheme. Overall though, his lectures were very interesting and I enjoyed the class.
Hello Business 100 students. I know Brian is showing you this now. He's a decent guy but can be condescending. He doesn't really teach anything and you have to self teach through the textbook. If you do not like reading the textbook and want to be taught switch to another Prof who uses slides.
I really enjoyed Brians class. Make sure you read the textbook and youll do fine on the exams as the exams are based off of that and some things you discuss in class. He doesnt like when people show up late. I liked his lectures, as long as you pay attention note taking isnt really required. Ill definitely take another one of his classes!
Brian assumes you have read the textbook so will never teach off of slides except when absolutely necessary to get a point across. He leads class discussion through real-life scenarios of what was read. As someone who remembers more from relating information back to events, this helped me pass tremendously!
Brian, sorry to say it, but for a communications prof you need to improve your communication. Little or no guideline for projects, assessment seemed arbitrary, and classes were useless. Multiple ungraded group presentations. You're on your own for tests as he doesn't teach course material, but merely uses class time to talk about current events.
Considering this is a communications class, he has the most confusing syllabus of all classes I've ever taken. He seems to be overthinking and overdoing his communications style which makes instructions more confusing than they already are. Good guy, but his teaching style can be improved as attending lectures are unnceccessary.
The lecture discussions had nothing to do with assessment. For a communications professor and class he needed definitive improvement in that. Read the textbook because that is all the assessments are based off of, but maybe dont read it for some assignments because youll somehow be missing things you were supposed to know out of thin air.
Nothing much to say. Just Avoid.
Brian was an amazing prof. He has great experience to draw on and is willing to lead various discussions. His material is relevant to today's world and adapts it so it is suitable for such. Honestly, take Brain's class. You can't go wrong.
I've taken both Bus 100 and 205 from Brian. Bus 100 was in class and 205 was during the pandemic. Overall his in person lectures are engaging and make the three hour class fly by. He gave plent of opportunities for group discussion and networking. The assignments are creative and customized to the specific class he teaches at least in my experience
Never go with brian Worst prof i had in my life
As a fresher, I never really thought I would be so engaged in his class. A man of words and always closes door right at the beginning of the class. Make sure you show up at time! good luck.
I have had Brian for 100 and 205 and he is amazing. I got stuck with a crappy group for BUS205 and he had meetings with me to do check-ins to see if it is improving and to give advice. All you really need to do to pass is participate in class and know how to apply the concepts in the textbook. That's it. Long answer finals, easy peasy.
