he is really good at what he does. he keeps u interested in what he is saying. he has a lot of really funny stories. i wish he taught all the classes i need to take for math.
Shaw is pretty darn hilarious. oh yea, and he's good at teaching math.
He's really funny and cool! I liked him alot. Hes great at math and always willing to help a kid out. His personality is really funny and he has reallly intersting life stories haha. Def take him if u have the opportunity!
Shaw does have a great personality, however he goes really, really fast. Also he seems like he does not have alot of patients, and he will say that he gets annoyed easily. He is a great guy, but not a great teacher.
He is really funny and he totally knows what he is talking about when it comes to math. take his class if you can!
Pleasant personality disguises impatient nature. Dosen't seem to care particularly wheteher or not he is getting through to students, and can become rather curt when asked to repeat or clarify problems.
Extremely rushed, will not review sections the next week (due to lack of time) uses excuses but seems to always find plenty of time to tell everyone about his kids and how tough he had it taking all of his phd classes and decided not to finish it. Time would be better spent helping the students our of our class of 20+ starters only 4 took the fina
Please do not take his class if you don't have to.Pick an instructor who will help you,if you need help.If you are not good in Math do not take his class. He is a nice guy,but he is a bad teacher.I had to drop his class, just to keep me from failing the class.
Personable, but rigid & inflexible re: class schedule conflicts. Very tough grader. Not enough time given to take his tests. Would be better off teaching higher level math classes.
this guy is a boss. he is one of the best teachers i've ever had. very personable guy, thoroughly goes over material, and will repeat things if a student doesn't understand
he is humorous and has a great sense of math overall never hesitates to answer question and makes an effort to keep everybody involved throughout the course there is lot of opportunity to pass his class even if you happen to mess up on a test or two
cool teacher; teaches good but you must pay attention;
He sets you up for failure. His main concern is keeping the "unworthy" from advancing. He thinks he teaches because he tells what's in the book and uses a lot of red ink to keep the undeserving out of the next level. In reality you would be better of with recorded lectures and having a clerk grade a standardized test. At least you would be saved from this guy's bias. And planting a tree in his parking spot would help offset the CO2 he emits.
I would greatly recommend taking from this teacher. He is a fair grader when it comes to tests (partial credit) and offers extra credit quizzes. Lectures are clear and helpful. If you attend class, pay attention, and complete the recommended problems from the book, you will do well. He is also willing to help one-on-one during office hours .
He taught the course material too fast and did not like explaining how he got the answer. Did not spend much time teaching the material with clarity, he was just concerned about getting through all the chapters. I do not recommend him as a teacher. He was too hard and did not care if you passed his class or not.
Mr. shaw is a cool guy but he is not a patient person at all and it seems like he just wants to get the class over with and done so he can go home. he talks about his kids..boring. and he explains the material quite fast. if you struggle at math and its not your best subject, do not take him! you will probably end up getting a bad grade in the clas
doesnt seem to care if u get a bad grade in class i would not take him again! and Im thinking of droping his class to keep me from failing.he helps u but gets fairly annoyed and in patient when you ask questions and just seems he wants to get the class over with.i have a tutor and im still doing bad,he marks off points on small stuff on tests BEWAR
Shaw is a great teacher. He enjoys what he does and makes learning math fun. He cracks jokes a lot. I'm not going to say his class is easy because you won't pass a math class with any teacher if you don't do your homework. He doesn't rush and he gives time before lecture to ask any questions on the previous homework.
He's a nice guy, don't get me wrong. But I don't pick teachers for personalities. He seems to be in a rush. I guess he tries, but I felt he didnt explain difficult type problems & just did the easy ones on the board for us. He only gives a couple examples per section so I really struggled on homework. Took the class after w someome else & got a B.
forget this guy he thinks grading you hard makes you somehow magically learn. He definatly slams more doors close than he opens, what a pity students still have to deal with his kind.
Is a great prof, typed notes help students learn material, goes a little fast but has office hours and is willing to work 1 on 1. Keeps the class fun with jokes and interaction with students. I would readily take him again, although the class may grade a little hard, you come out of the class actually knowing the material.
Decent guy, but for people like me, who don't like math, aren't really good at it, but just need it for a degree requirement, take it with someone else like Pam Jackson. I wish I could have her this semester, but the times didn't work out. He goes way too fast - it feels like advanced math, and the tests are hard - even if you do all the homework!!
Don't take him unless you can teach yourself math. He goes way too fast, and if you are writing notes just to keep up with him, how can you understand what he's talking about??? He also gets pissy when everyone is confused, BECASUSE of him. I had to drop him and retake it with someone else.
He's really good at teaching all learning types
I love Mr. Shaw... He is a very nice guy and the tests and quizzes aren't too bad. And if you attend study groups, you will get extra credit... Overall, teacher is really nice and the class itself was ok
By far a very gifted and intelligent teacher. Doesn't let you pass the class without learning. Tests over concepts, not ability to regurgitate formulas. Those who want to learn math well, take a class with him. I got an A in the class without opening the book because he explains things so well in class. Truly a fantastic professor.
I have had him for a couple classes, algebra and trig. He's very good. He explains things well and answers my questions. You have to learn the math, but its fair. Fun class.
Understands material very well. Teaches from a practical aspect. Classes start/end on time - be there! Class not boring, surprising for such a challenging subject. Not many people dropped, also surprising. On tests, problems were fair but there were a lot of them. Grading was slightly nit-picky but relatively consistent.
good man
this guy is really nice and he really cares about his students and he has some funny stories too. He explains everything very well
Excellent Teacher! Really cares about his students and math. Class is not mandatory but, I promise if you do not come you will NOT pass. Missing one day is like missing 4 sections in a chapter..in other words missing a chapter of notes. Don't worry you will NOT get his! Missing classes, I had to W. Very funny and energetic Highly recommend him...
Awesome teacher! To anyone who said he goes too fast.. all you have to do is ask him to explain and he's more than happy to. And you can always get help in the math lab. Make sure you go to each class, it's not required, but you learn a lot in just one day. He's a VERY funny guy, just sarcastic, so if you can't handle sarcasm, he's not for you.
fantastic teacher, i hated math before i took his class. He is extremely educated and knows how to teach math, I plan on taking for every class i need to in math. He is also hilarious and has a great personality. His test have there tough moments but if you use his note packets you will get a good grade. He gives you partial credit if youshowwork!
awesome guy really helpful
Shaw is a great teacher and person. He knows how to communicate concepts in different ways and is easy to listen to and understand. He has funny stories and creates a good class atmosphere. He expects you to put effort into studying and coming to class even though it's not mandatory.
This guy knows his stuff and even applies to to concepts you will learn in high math classes such as calculus, trig, and even physics. You will not get by if you don't try. He lays out everything to expect on the tests and has wonderful notes. It can move fast, so make sure you know what you're doing in the homework sections. Very good teacher!
A great Professor. Extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and fun. I would certainly take him again. The SI was great, too.
BEST math professor at OCC! He explains everything so well, and gives out tons of extra credit. Study what's in the notes, do the hw, and go to study group. The tests are tough, but there are no surprises on them. Wish I could have him for all my math classes! Highly recommend.
Easily the best math instructor I have ever had. He focuses heavily on WHY what you are learning is important and relevant, which greatly aids in understanding and retention.
Easily one of the best math teachers. He's head of the math department.
Very helpful to students, even going so far as to review a couple problems on test days. When taking notes, he throws in funny stories and will still stop & make sure we understand everything we're learning. I've never been great at math but with him as my teacher, I get some enjoyment out of it. Get the textbook as that's where the hw is from.
best teacher i learned so much from him and the way he teaches. we didnt use the book i did try to but his way was much easier i still ended up not passing the class but thats my fault. amazing teacher hes funny too not boring to listen to at all gave helpful hints i tried retaking it w/him but he wasnt teaching the next semester:(
This is the best teacher that I have had at OCC. Also one of the best math teachers, if not the best math teacher, I've ever had. He knows what he's talking about and if you pay attention, take notes and do the homework you'll be fine. He makes sure you understand the material and has fun while doing it. You must earn your grade. Overall excellent.
I don't understand how Shaw is rated so high... he isn't a good professor. He quickly goes through complex material and expects everyone to understand it quickly. He makes you feel dumb if you ask for clarification on anything. Also, he's VERY strict on grading and doesn't believe in partial credit. You need to work hard for an A like i had to.
Our class had 35 students and at the end of the semester there were 13 of us left. Shaw is a difficult prof. Do not take him if you aren't prepared to understand and teach yourself everything on your own. Hes also pretty moody
Don't get me wrong he is a cool guy but he grades sooo hard.. I studied like crazy took the exam feeling like I got an A and I would get a D..
I had him for Calc III. He gives 100% effort to teach students what he knows, which is alot, since he's one of the most knowlegdeable people I've met.He is fair and upfront. It's a pleasure and a privilege to have him as a professor. Just MAKE an effort to actualy learn what he teaches you (HOMEWORK!) and you'll be fine. Practice, practice!
He is the best math teacher I have ever had. Homework is only due at the day of the test and he makes the day interesting because he is funny and loud and ties his math into hilarious stories. Definately recommend him to anyone.
This teacher grades very harshly.Something might be out of 6 and you might have had a problem that deserves 0.5pts off he gives you -4.Tests are very hard too. I don't recommend taking it with him.
Had to retake this class, Professor Shaw graded very harshly, It was his way or no way. I retook it with Vallely in an accelerated 8 week class, who got to the point, graded fairly, and provided clarification! I ended up with a B+ in her class,
Without a question the best math professor you will ever have. Brian's knowledge of math from Algebra to Calculus 4 is amazing!! The notes he gives you are so important and way more than you will get from any other professor. If you need any type of math for your future do yourself a huge favor and take any and all of Brian's classes.
awful teacher , unclear in lectures and tough grader . I don't see at all how they made him the boss in math department he is totally careless and rude
I had taken this class in highschool but it is only after doing this class with him that I have truly understood the concepts ..... I daresay even enjoyed it :) He is justly the head of math department !!!
Very tough grader. He is very strict with no exceptions. I was extremely sick and he would not even let me take the exam I missed.
I'm in the Math Center almost everyday an hour or so & some of the more "colorful" details of Brian seem to come from his fellow Professors rather than students. Yes he will mark correct answers wrong but for your own good if you go on in Math. Most other Professors will agree w students that his pedagogy is questionable but extra credit can help.
He is a good professor that loves mathematics. Expect a lot of pointless stories not related to math from his football history to giving rides to his former math teacher on his motorcycle. Other than that just study, pay attention, and ask questions!
Don't get me wrong , he's a great teacher and I absolutely love his stories but he's a REALLY tough grader. He really tries to push his students and will expect a lot out of them, which is good IF you're not also taking many other classes in the same semester. All in all, I would take his calc II class now that I know what to expect. Be prepared.
Hardest grader I've ever seen with 120+ college credits
He is great at explaining the conceptual stuff. However, his tests are extremely difficult and the homework, math center, and reviews did not prepare me for them. I have never gotten less than a B in a college course and had to withdraw from this class. He is great at explaining the concepts but not at explaining how to actually do the problems.
Always seemed ready to help with questions. Grades fair. His passion for math is catchy.
the best math teacher i have ever had, he might be a little hard on grading but he dos have valid points. i had to drop his calc 2 class and then started from calc 1 -3 with him. i was dazzled by the knowledge of mathematics that he has, i did not just learn math i learned many other things. simply the best math teacher i have ever seen
Great math teacher. He is really good.
He explains the concept but doesn't explain how to put it all together. If you're good at teaching yourself, you'll be fine. If you're not, I'd choose a different professor. Tests are extremely tough. There WILL be things on the test that he doesn't cover. I've never had lower than a B+ in a class and I had to drop his.
I highly do not recommend taking Shaw. He is one of those teachers where 2/3 of the class will drop before the final. Obviously if there's that many people dropping, the real issue is the teacher. Lectures barely cover anything on the exams. Exams are so hard people turn some of it in Empty because there isn't enough time to finish. Dont waste time
Shaw is awesome. He is really funny. He is good at teaching and you can tell he really cares. Homework is optional, but if you do it, he will replace a test grade with your homework grade. Tests are kinda hard, not too bad. He answers everyone's questions and takes time explaining.
Shaw is a very intelligent, nice guy, but is a tough grader. I went to the morning and afternoon group studies, did all of the optional homework, extra credit and was still failing. We had 30 students the first week, by the second month there was 8 left. If you know how to teach yourself, you will be okay. Try to avoid as much as possible!!!!!
All around awesome professor
easily one of the hardest math teachers I've ever had. I have him currently right now as of 2017 and I'm going to drop his class. He teaches way to fast for notes I don't even get to understand them just writing it down. He does Tests only no quizzes just these huge test that are very challenging. He is hard to understand. You get no breaks. Rude.
he is a good professor. he is funny, when he teaches something he go in depth of that subject. his test though are hard, so be prepared for it.
great professor. you can tell he loves what he does and is quite entertaining. The only downfall is he is a really tough grader and kind of goes fast through the notes but has no problem answering any questions you might have.
Great teacher if you want to really understand Calc 3. The tests are much harder than most teachers but they will prepare you well for future courses. Your whole grade is dependent on five tests; very few other opportunities to earn points.
I really learned alot from Professor Shaw, he explains in great detail, and tries to make sure everyone has an understanding of the matter. Their are lecture packets you can printout which makes note taking a breeze. So,if you do decide to sign up for Professor Shaw classes, you will not regret it!
Great teacher, always there to help you when you need it. His course packs makes the class way easier.
Huge test worth a lot of points, the test are nearly nothing like the notes. Text book it not even used for the class, slightly helpful for studying, he has said multiple that he disagrees with a lot of things in the text book. Ended up having to drop the class because i goofed on the first two test and my grade was past the point of no return.
Great professor who is already to help. His SIs are also really helpfull.
Good teacher who knows his subject and is passionate.
Shaw has to be the toughest professor I've ever taken, but he does a great job! If you want an easy math class, don't take him, but if you want to actually learn something, go with Shaw! If you are willing to put in the time studying, he is an effective communicator.
Mr Shaw is a good guy and really does try to push everyone to do their best. When it comes to lectures, he does an ok job at explaining the material and expects you to really understand when you do your homework. His tests however are really difficult as he gives a ton of problems with curveballs. Get ready to put in a ton of work 24 hrs/week min.
Terrible professor. Has refused to answer students questions Im not going to answer that because you should have learned it in the previous class. Be ready to teach yourself the entire semester with a book he chose but somehow disagrees with it in every leachure so his exams are nothing alike
If you're bad at math, care about your grades, and expect to have time to actually learn the material: don't take this class. If you're good at teaching yourself you MIGHT be ok. He is the math department chair, and teaches really fast. Exams are incredibly difficult w/curve balls. All but about 8-10 students dropped the class by the final exam.
Hard class. Only grades tests and makes them long and hard. Don't take unless you are a fast learner or prepared to do work outside of class because in class he goes fast.
Mr. Shaw is the best math teacher at OCC, and if he went to another university he'd probably be the best there too. He goes by the book unless there's an easier way to do it and he'll accept that with no issue. Very understanding and accommodating if you make some effort.
Mr. Shaw is probably one of the best math teachers that I have ever had. He knows what he is talking about and he makes sure that you understand the material as well. He is not an easy teacher, but if you do the practice problems and the hw and actually pay attention to his notes in the class you will be just fine.
Hardest class that I took!! He constantly goes off on other topics and does not do a lot of problems in class. Talks about lots of other stuff besides math. Is a super hard grader to. Avoid him if you want to save your grade
Super hard exams and barely gives any partial credit! Constantly talks about other things besides math and his exams are way long and way hard. Ruined my GPA with this class. Avoid if you can
I don't think it was really him that I struggled in this class I think it was because this class is hard. Really wish he had more opportunities to get your grade up you only get one homework assignment per exam. The homework is optional but if you don't do the homework that only leaves your test grade. So unless you're a math wizard do the homework
Honestly I never good at Math. I dropped other professors classes twice. BUT what I wanna say is Shaw is the BEST one I ever met. He cares students and tries so hard to help us to understand the lecture. You will find out his notes and HW all tight up with the tests if you do them. I take 2 of his different corses and all get the good grade.
Professor Shaw is a great professor. His teaching style just did not correspond with my learning style. This class is really hard, especially if you're not good at math. He does a great job going over it in class, will work with you outside of class, and gives you plenty of options for practice. Personally wouldn't take him again but he's very nice
His class is super hard and makes exams long and extra hard!! Constantly find other things besides math to talk about. If you want a fair math teacher and want to learn math then you need to find some other prof who explains the steps clearly. Gets off topic with a bunch of stories unrelated to math.
Most students end up failing his class!! Avoid his College Algebra class. Good teacher but makes his class super hard. Avoid at all costs.
Went to class then came home and had to teach myself the material. Picks the most difficult problems for the exam. Rude. Doesnt give people a chance to ask questions.
Mr. Shaw likes to talk about his family A lot which is fine, until we've wasted 10 minutes of class time with him telling stories. Other than that, he's nice and thorough. He loves participation because it helps with understanding and he doesn't just talk at you. I'm taking one of his classes again this summer. My final is in 2 days so idk my grade
Prof. Shaw is an EXTREMELY tough grader, every little detail counts or points are taken off. Much time was spent studying outside of class and the highest I've gotten on a test is an 87%. Would not take again for future math classes but that's just me. No extra credit besides the problem of the week which are impossible.
He's nice, but the material he teaches is not reflected in the tests. The majority of test content comes from optional homework assignments, which means you will have to teach yourself the material. You will need time to do the problems and to understand them. Also, he's very picky and takes off points for the slightest errors. DOES NOT CURVE.
Avoid this guy at all costs! Spends more time talking about his family than actually learning algebra. Exams are waaayyy too hard and not reflective of what is covered in the homework. Save your grade and find someone else!!
Nice guy but very tough prof. Doesn't curve. Extra credit problems are very hard. Hw is optional but if you do it, it needs to be correct otherwise it hurts your grade. So exams make up almost all of your grade so if you know what you're doing then you're good otherwise have fun struggling. Replaces 1 exam with final exam if you do good.
Heavy on tests, books is used only for practice, DOES give extra credit (thank god), thoroughly explains things, not necessary to go to class as long as you get the notes. Overall, it is a tough class but the professor makes it so enjoyable and somewhat easier to understand. 10/10 would take again because he's amazing!
He gets off topic way too much, and all his assignments such as tests and homework require you to write an essay explaining your answer. Writing essays to explain our answers will take too much time from doing other problems. I though this was math class, not english class.
I personally thought Shaw was a good prof. His lectures are informative and he mixes in a bit of humor as well. Your grade comes from exams and optional hw assignments. The hw is graded on correctness and can hurt your grade if you're bombing them, but if you do them all you get extra credit based on how many points you're over the limit.
Mr. Shaw is a very tough grader and the way he sets up homework is very confusing for me; it gets to be too much. He spends most of the class time talking about his personal life and it's so distracting and it makes it very hard to focus. We would get through the material quicker if he stayed on topic. This class is going to be hard to pass.
Would never take him again! His lectures are long because he always talks about his life outside of class, and will keep you after class! Youre ONLY graded on tests (and optional homework). Also he calls kids out during class and is pretty rude.
Avoid!!! He spends most of class talking about his personal life. Also he is super repetitive and gives many many examples on the easiest topics, but quickly goes over the harder topics. Keeps you late after class (probably wouldnt if he didnt mostly talk about his personal life). Also youre only graded on the tests!
Horrible! He is nice enough, but very condescending. He gives fill in the blank notes which is nice. During corona his online format was awful and he took points off for technical difficulties. He is not understanding or accommodating at all. Avoid like the plague. Need textbook for cheat sheet for studying. Recommended problems in syllabus suck.
AVOID!! While all classes were switched online he made it as hard as he could for kids not to pass. Videos he posted were poor quality and rushed through all hard problems. He was extremely rude and wasn't accommodating during such a terrible time. In class, he took up much of the time talking about his own life. ONLY GRADES INCLUDE TESTS.
If you study hard enough, you won't have any problems passing this class. Great Prof.
I cannot recommend Shaw enough -- if you have the chance to be in one of his classes, take it!! He provides note packets that make following along really easy. Shaw will also give a ton of tips and tricks to make your life in math soooo much easier. Classes aren't hard to sit through bc he usually breaks up the time with fun, personal stories
I recommend this course for anyone who wants a solid foundation in math. He is very helpful and his class offers a study group as well, which is very helpful. It's up to rather you pass or not.
I recommend Professor Shaw for anyone who wants a strong foundation in math. He makes you work for your grade, and his class offered a study group as well. It's up to you if you pass the class. You have to put in the work and ask for help.
Harsh on grading If you ask him for some points or why he took points off He will respond in a horrible way Its not the professor you would want to take Very difficult and will take points off the smallest mistakes . If you want to take this class make sure you take it with any other professor than him .
Ive never grinded a class harder for a B. Hes a nice guy and knows his math, but hes a very harsh grader and very cut throat. His tests are very long. If its an online version of this class avoid it because he grades harder since its online.
Took online classes as a result of cornavirus mandates. Was not accomodating, rude, and unhelpful. Took off points unjustly. WOULD NOT RECCOMEND.
Shaw is an outstanding professor, I don't know how anyone could honestly give him a bad review. I think a lot of the people here fail to recognize that math is a difficult subject, and requires you to do a lot of work on your own to understand it. If you want easy A's and to have your hand held throughout college then go major in the arts.
Brian was the best professor I ever had. Took his class when Corona became a thing that made the class go online. Throughout the entire class, I learned so much about math and learned a lot from his life stories. I wish there were more words I could say about this guy. All I can say is that he should be getting paid top dollar for what he does!!!
He's a tough grader who takes days to respond to any email. Docks points for the dumbest things. Working so hard for such a simple class isnt how I imagined spending my time. Nowhere near enough time given for tests, which forced me to turn in an incomplete test. I would rather drop out of college and become a sheep herder than take his class again
The tests and homework are only difficult if you are not productive in this class, you can't leave things until the last minute or you will fail. Update: After taking this professor, I decided to take a math class that was below trig (you decide why). This professor is a harsh grader, but understandable. The prof is willing to help you out though!
He is very honest and I respect that, expect some constructive criticism. His passion for math is hilariously entertaining at times, both in person and remotely
I've had multiple classes with Professor Shaw. Fantastic math teacher. You will not be disappointed.
Ive gone to college for four years and have a cumulative 3.85 gpa. The lowest grade Ive ever received in those 4 years is a B+. I AM FAILING HIS CLASS. Harsh grader, barely teaches material shown on test, rushes through problems in lectures, and barely explains anything. PLEASE avoid this this teacher, hes the worst ive ever had.
A pretty okay math teach in person, but online I found the format difficult to learn from and he was not forgiving of technical issues, even if you e-mailed him in advance. He can be funny, but he also can be condescending at times. I've taken two classes with him and his tests are always long, and the finals always seemed to be really hard.
I barely passed his class. He didn't even teach, he just uploaded old note videos and gave us homework that had nothing to do with the exams. Graded super hard on things we had no way of knowing we had to do a certain way.
Professor made videos that are low quality and hardly made sense. Completely different tests than anything you learn from the homework. Student teacher didnt explain things well and sometimes didnt even understand or remember what chapter we are on. Overall, way harder class than it needed to be.
He does easy problems in class but puts the hardest problems on his exams. AVOID HIS CLASS if possible!!
If you try, you will do well in this class. Have quizzes weekly, hw you got 3 tries and if you got 90% he rounded to 100%.There was a midterm and final. They are def hard and diff from the hw, but if you come prepared you will do well. Lots of extra credit points. Lectures aren't long and they are very clear. He is strict but wants you to do well.
His midterm and final exam are REALLY hard compared to the homework and online exams. I recommend avoid his class as he makes the stuff really hard and gives the easy problems during lecture. Exams are not similar to the material covered in class.
I would recommend Professor Shaw to anyone who is willing to work hard and put in the time for the grade that they desire. If you are looking for someone whose structured and knows what he's doing then it would definitely be him. He cares and really does help his student, but the student has to also care for themselves. A class for hard workers!
Professor Shaw is head of the Math Dept, so he knows his stuff. I took his asynchronous Stats course, and all I can say is, WATCH HIS LECTURE VIDEOS. By watching them 3 times each, I was able to grasp the material well and got great grades on my exams. His exams are straight from the lectures. Only thing that sucked was Pearson's ebook. TRASH!
do not take Professor Shaws online classes, youre asking to fail. uploads videos and uses online system for the homework but those did not correlate to his exams that are in person. tough to understand what you need from him in order to pass the exam.
If you want to succeed in math avoid this professor. I enjoy math and perform very well in any learning setting (whether that is online or in person). Math requires a lot of practice and repetition and I can guarantee that no matter how much you practice the course materials that are provided by him, you will perform terribly on his tests.
This is by far the worst professor I've had at OCC. The online lectures haven't been updated, things he tells you to study for that will be on the tests are not causing you to study for the wrong thing, things that were not in our homework end up on tests, the "extra credit" he offers is a joke, etc. I would not recommend anyone take his courses.
Old lecture videos, and long note packets to go along with the videos. Worst of all he'll have you come in person to take the mid-term and final, but that's not the bad part. These two tests are what 65% of your final grade ride on! Great idea shaw have one of the most confusing college courses ride on two giant six-chapter tests! talk about lazy!
I found professor Shaw to be great! I took his Statistics class in person once a week with a 4 hour lecture. His classes are heavily focused on lectures... if you miss one you will be very behind. The grade is composed of 4 tests and online homework every 2 weeks. Work hard, go to class...you will be successful. He is also a very fair grader.
Do not take his class if you wanna do online classes. He will make you answer the tests on campus even if it is online. His exams were all difficult. He is very critical in giving you points. Be careful if you think you get a whole point because he will not give all the points. Attend his group study if you want to; that's his only extra credit.
He made me love Math again
He grades very harshly, assigns homework not representative of tests, and demonstrates unchecked arrogance, protected by his title as the chair of the math department. Grades are heavily reliant on four tests, barely taught in notes. You can give full effort, do everything recommended in the syllabus, fail, and it's still YOUR fault, exclusively.
Do not take! Especially if you already struggle with math. His online homework and quizzes aren't too bad due to being able to look at your notes for reference but his exams are very hard and a little different from what he has us study from. Doesnt allow cheat sheets either! And I hate how he no longer does ec for Math1560 bc it would help so much
DO NOT TAKE!!! I should've listened to the reviews. He is the absolute worst omg. I had to drop his class because of how insanely hard his tests and exams are and ofc they're worth more points than the hw. If you're good at trigonometry, you might be able to pass but if not pls do yourself a favor and do not waste your money on him.
Graded only on online HW and tests. Online HW does not reflect the test format. Very tough grader on tests. AVOID!
I thought I would fail this class, but I got a 90% on the final. He's very clear and entertaining. He speaks slowly and often uses real-life experiments to help us understand. His homework is harder than the tests, and I struggled a bit, but there was a highschool freshman/sophomore who helped us do good on those. try to befriend her if you can!
Professor Shaw is the best. Basically, exams are form his lectures only. Need to practice multiple examples from his given exercise.
This class takes a lot of work in order to be successful. There's graded online homework, ungraded book homework, weekly quizzes and 2 exams (midterm and final). The 2 exams make up the bulk of the points for the course and are difficult. If you do all of the coursework including the ungraded book homework you should do well.
His lectures were very easy to follow, and with this being a fast paced course, he left a lot of difficult, non-important topics out! Only 2 exams, midterm and final, the rest is online homework and quizzes. Overall, really great teacher, funny and very easy to contact outside of class.
Do not take the class with him. Lectures are different what you you will have in the exam. Very hard .
i was iffy reading his reviews and i thought "it cant be that bad" and its not BUT theres a lot of lecture videos (like 70) and notes. hes also using videos from the beginning of covid with shorter classes so he cuts out a lot of topics & now in a full term class i am still expected to know these things hes not teaching. its not the best be careful
do NOT take this class if you value your time and sanity. this professor is AWFUL. i have so much more to say but not enough characters to type. heed the warnings, this teacher is not neurodiv. friendly, and to anyone considering taking this class for statistics credit especially online, STAY AWAY from this unnecessarily difficult class.
He made statistics look easy! He's always available after class. The syllabus lists many optional exercises. Most of them are the same problems that he puts in the exams, so if you use them to practice, you should pass the class easily.
He is a good person and probably a good in-person teacher. His online is totally backwards though. He has you do e-homework that isn't anything like the exams (and he tells you this) and then provides supplemental work (non graded) that is exactly like the exam. Why not give homework that actually reflects the course exam expectations?
Stats is the only math class I've taken at OCC. And I'm pretty bad at math. Overall, the class was doable. The online quizzes were difficult. I focused on his videos & practice tests for midterm/final prep. He seems to be an easy grader on the midterm/final. I spent 15hrs on this class per week, so it's no joke, but if I can pass, so can you.
Professor Shaw makes stats digestible. His lectures are clear, and his practice materials closely match the exams. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for review - along with the free textbook, it prepped me well.
I really liked Professor Shaw. He was kind and very funny. He's a smart man. His exams and a little difficult and he is a tough grader but go to class and pay attention and do extra credit! You will be fine.
take the guided notes. do the recommended bookwork. do your homework. the extra credit is difficult, make sure you have time to do it. difficult material, but amazing teacher. you will succeed if you just try.
Lecture note format compared to homework and quiz format was completely different. If you have a difficult time with math. This is not the teacher for you. I reached out multiple different times for help and questions and got little to no information or help. I don't recommend taking his classes.
Do not take this class especially if you aren't strong in mathematics! His digital lectures are an average of 15 to 20 min length. While the notes are print outs they give you nothing for the online homework or quizzes. A majority of your grade rides on the in person mid-term and final which are based on question from the book he never really uses.
In his online asynchronous summer statistics class, everything he provides is sufficient to succeed. His videos are informative; I watch them and fill in the blanks on the provided notes he gives us. The online quizes and homework are not like the exam, BUT he posted example exams & always instructs us what textbook problems are useful to practice.
I don't even know how to start. I took this class in the summer, thinking it was gonna be hard, but not to the point where I wanted to drop out of school. Every time I emailed the professor regarding a question on our first exam, he told me and I quote " Whatever is on it, is fair game" this was very unhelpful and overall depressing to take.
Though this class was online, Professor Shaw made clear videos and he was very helpful. I struggle in math and I am not saying this is an easy class but I worked hard and professor Shaw showed that he really cared and wanted his students to succeed. If you work through the practice exams he provides, you will be fine on the midterm and final.
This was probably the worst instructor I have ever taken a class with. His online homeworks and quizzes are nothing like the test and he posts almost nothing outside of the lecture videos to help you learn the content. If you dont spend your entire week on his class, you won't succeed. Also, dont forget to get at least avreage 60% or you fail!!!
I had an 81 and he erased it to a zero.
He gives grade super hard. If you write not the same he wants, you won't have grade. No extra credit, no chance
Unbelievably difficult, by far hardest class i've ever taken, please do not take him he is the head of math at occ orchard ridge and does nothing to offer extra help outside of class or credit or anything.
DON'T TAKE. I love math, and this is by far the hardest class I've ever taken, very rude, no feedback, only graded on mid-term and final, no videos/notes go with the exam. Even if you "pass" the class, if you don't do well on the midterm and final, he'll fail you. Hard to understand, complicated. NEVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
Exams do not reflect practice materials and high-stakes testing outweigh demonstrated learning. This class is also not neurodiv friendly. You'll have video lectured notes but have to ultimately teach yourself. Needs to update formats, covid videos are still being used. Prioritizes policy enforcement over instructional support. Take anyone else.
