Dr. Sillanpaa is a really fun Patho teacher. He likes teaching, is great at answering questions, and makes it easy to learn the concpts. He makes tough concepts fun, and genuinely tries to help each of his students do as well as possible. Definitely my favorite BIO teacher at GCU--super encouraging.
He just read from the powerpoint and let his IA do the rest. We did busy work and were basically just kids he babysat.
Mr. Sillanpaa is a very laid back teacher. He's sarcastic and funny. The length of the class and the constant lectures and Powerpoints made it hard to stay engaged... But assignments are not too hard!
Funny. Really cares if the students learn the whole concept, doesn't want us to just memorize. Tough class but learned a lot.
Professor Sillanpaa is not one of my favorite teachers at GCU. He has very long and boring lectures that are very confusing. He does not know how to explain topics and just reads the slides on the power points and goes by very quickly. I don't think he cares about his students, it seemed like everyday he just wanted to hurry through the class
Boring, dry material, reads straight from powerpoint slides, hard to stay focused because he is not interesting at all. lecture with exams, this is a self teach class, he doesn't teach he just reads and gives out exams. I had him at ASU, he obviously isn't there anymore... (wonder why!)I would NOT recommend this teacher.
A teacher that really doesn't teach anything. Rambles on in class about stuff not even related to the topic, then asks questions on tests not covered. Taken him for multiple classes and his teaching style is boring and not helpful in any of the related subjects. Do not take him.
Made you feel dumb when asking questions. Did not know the material on the slides. When ask him questions he would not answer clearly and leave you asking your self what is the answer. I would not recommend him. Patho is a very hard class in itself, with a teacher who does not know what he is teaching makes it that much harder
Study, study, study. He is funny but the class is hard!
I did not enjoy his class at all. He was not engaging, and he made it very hard to get into the lecture. He makes you feel stupid, and does not answer questions to the best of his ability which leaves students hanging. The test are constantly graded wrong, and gives test before completing a chapter. He is not a good teacher. Do not get him!
Great teacher if you put effort in. There are a lot of whiny students that just want to get the answers. I've had this teacher for 3 classes now, and I learn a ton. He will spend hours going through material if you have studied and have questions, but he doesn't have any patience if you don't buy the book, come to class or do the assignments.
Good teacher. Taught us the material and made it so we had the help we needed.
Didn't know what he was talking about most of the time. Rambled about nothing during lecture, and exam/quiz questions were very challenging to understand so most did poorly. Don't expect to be taught anything.
He really got off topic a lot. We kept getting behind and then we had to rush through things and he would say,"Oh you'll learn this in lab" We did not learn that in lab. The tests are easy though as long as you study the study guides. Everything from those are on the tests.
Dr. Sillanpaa is very knowledgable and keeps his class interesting. I highly recommend him. Go to review sessions if his TA offers them, because they will literally give you answers. Take notes and stay engaged during class, and you will be fine!
Dr. Sillanpaa is the BEST teacher at GCU! He's funny and really explains physiology behind the diseases really well. ALL of his lectures are on his YouTube page, ALL of his lectures have written transcripts, and he gives study guides for each test on the first day of the class. BUT HIS CLASSES, ESPECIALLY PATHOPHYSIOLOGY, ARE VERY HARD!
Pathophys is a challenging class, but Dr. Sillanpaa is always willing to help. He really know his stuff and always engages the class with thought provoking questions! He does well keeping your attention and explains the concepts so they can be understood easily. Highly recommend this professor.
Great Professor! Learn how to write case-studies and memorize key words
You do the assignments in class and all you need to do is try on the assignments and you get 100%. He actually teaches you instead of reading off the slides and he explains everything instead of trying to go through as many slides as possible in one class. He makes his own exams and gives you real life examples.
He's great at lecturing because he teaches instead of reading to you, but he has PPT's to go with everything that help for studying. He is always willing to help and if you go to his office will spend all the time you need to make sure you understand the material. His exams are what he says they'll be, just the material is hard.
If you take this professor be prepare to study like crazy, but get a bad grade on tests because instead of learning pathophysiology, you will have to find the "key- word"on a case study made by other students. What you learn in class, you will not be tested on. I don't recommend.
Really helpful but you have t ask for it. You are expected to be an adult, show up and do the work.
If you want an easy A DONT take him. If you want to really learn Patho there's no one better.
Sillanpaa was rude and NOT helpful. He makes rude comments and has no intention to help his students. I would not take him again for anything.
Best professor I have ever had. I couldn't have gotten through this semester without him. If you go to him for help he will work with you in any way he can. He helped me with many of my courses, not just his own. He is straight forward about what he is testing on. He has an ability to break down complex material in a way that anyone can understand.
Great professor! As long as you do the study guides, you will know exactly what he wants from you on the tests. He lectures in a good speed for me. Not too fast. I would recommend him for this course.
Pathophysiology is a difficult class, but he did a great job with lectures and giving all of us resources we can use to practice reading and solving case studies. It was a great class.
Professor Sillanpaa is a fantastic teacher. He prepares you with study guides, videos of his lectures along with everything g he said in the lectures written down and practice tests. His lectures are exciting and intense. He does expect you to be prepared and will keep you on your toes! No better teacher for Patho!
His class was always entertaining because he tries to keep you on your toes. He will yell you key things to remember about certain diseases so that you dod not have to memorize 20 million different things, but he is an amazing teacher and would totally take his class again! Goodluck.
great teacher.
Test are only hard if you do not study. Ready the transcripts and powerpoints!
Professor Sillanpaa was easily one of the best professors I have ever had in my educational experience. If only he taught in the school of nursing! His lectures were very clear, he expanded greatly on all topics, answered all questions, and he was a very fair and honest grader. I would love to take a class taught by him again.
He is good at lecturing and explaining things. Though not so good at picking out the specifics that should be on tests or quizzes.
His lectures are very dry, except when he makes jokes every now and then. He elaborates on things he thinks are most important to grasp, but expect to go to the textbook or google for most things in the study guides. Overall it was a fun class if you were an active student and asked questions. Playing Kahoot in class was a lot of fun, too.
Sillanpaa is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's very sarcastic and has a sense of humor that may or may not be appreciated by some people, however, he does know what he is talking about and gives you the tools to learn more about diseases and their affects on the body.
His lectures are really boring tries to be funny at times. Does not go over what we need for the test. Worksheets are graded by the students. Only have 2 Exams which is pretty much your grade. He told us not to use the book but rather google it.
Sillanpaa is a great and funny teacher. He kinda reminds me of primack if you had him for 201/202 lecture and humor wise. The course itself is very difficult, no matter what teacher you have. Lectures are interesting. He would put like one or two things on the exam that weren't even in the lectures. Other than that, I enjoyed him as a professor.
Patho is a hard class to begin with so no matter what professor, this course IS DIFFICULT. That said, Sillanpaa is pretty amazing. He really wants you to understand and will keep explaining or giving examples until you do. He wants you to pass and constantly pushed his office hours. He has a dry sense of humor but he is hilarious! Great professor!
Sillanpaa is an amazing professor. I had him for two courses 202 and 322. These courses are not easy and it will be hard regardless of the professor. He is highly respected and through my journey in the other courses, I constantly recall parts of his lectures. He does have a very characteristic sense of humor so please keep that in mind.
Will never take him again. He is a terrible lecture & his quizzes/exams are never like the study guides. He is sarcastic in a rude way. This class shouldn't be as hard as he made it
Dr. Sillanpaa is an amazing professor and I highly recommend him for Pathophysiology! The class itself is not easy but the professor applies the information in a useful way that is easy to grasp. Also, his videos on YouTube are extremely helpful when reviewing for an exam.
He is very monotoned. Reads straight from the PowerPoint and doesn't elaborate much. He expects you to know things that aren't in the PowerPoint but doesn't tell you what. You must ask questions!!!
Brian was an okay teacher. He read directly off of the power points but still expected you to know other details about the subjects. He drew a lot of pictures so I guess that helped visual learners but his voice is so boring it was hard for me to even understand what he was trying to say. I think he made things harder than they should have been.
He is such a great teacher. A little cooky but funny and very interesting. I took him for nursing patho and he made the curriculum so he knows his stuff. He is easy to understand and easy to get ahold of. I would definitely recommend him!
Dr. Sillanpaa is a great professor. He tells lots of stories and loves to hear from students about their experiences with the conditions covered in class, which helps them to stick better. Without the textbook it can be hard to find all of the information he wants you to know on the test, but the textbook is cheap and older versions are fine.
Professor Sillanpaa is a great guy! He spell out what you need to know and what you don't really need to. He also makes you work for your grade, but also wants you to do well. I highly recommend.
brian is a very average professor. He is monotone and boring and often skips through the slides saying "this slide is boring, i have nothing else to say." the IA is much more helpful and often has to jump in to answer questions that the professor cant answer. I do not recommend him.
Professor Sillanpaa is obviously very educated in the subject and, honestly, I believe that is why his class was so terrible. He forgets that this is an entry level class for nursing and that none of us know the basics. He dives directly into depth and he is notorious for skipping through slides and not explaining them but including it on the test.
Prof. Sillanpaa really cares about his students and will reach out to them to help them understand the lecture. If you go to his office hours, he is mostly available and will explain in depth about what you need to know to help you understand for the exam. The exams can be simple if you really study and understand what you're studying.
Professor Sillanpaa is a great teacher! He has a unique sense of humor that helps you remember the material and he definitely cares about his students. He cares more about understanding than memorization, and he draws lots of pictures for all you visual learners out there. The class is lecture heavy, but I wouldn't say it's boring.
Prof. Sillanpaa is a great pathophysiology professor. He works hard to break down each sign and symptom so that it is easier to critical think on the exam. He also makes it a point to distinguish similar diseases from each other. His tests are very creative, funny, and straightforward; not written to trick students.
He is a nice guy and makes the material easy to understand. The whole class is scored off of four tests, so be ready to study. I would definitely take him again.
I highly recommend Professor Sillanpaa for BIO201 and BIO202. He may seem a little intimidating at first, but trust me he has a sense of humor and wants you to do well. It is very important to go to class because he tells you what is on the tests! Tests are very straight forward, but you will definitely need to spend time studying. Use quizlet!
He really doesnt care about his students Should be fired
Brian is a great teacher. Do not be afraid to talk to him outside of or after class. He really cares and wants you to succeed. The TAs/IAs are important to get to know and they are more than willing to help you too. Do not miss class! You miss a lot if you miss just one class.
Super boring lectures that are hard to understand, he constantly telling us we are going to fail, and some days it seems like he's IA run the course more then he does. Didn't like this professor at all, not helpful or good at explaining concepts. Wouldn't take any of his courses again.
He makes sure that you understand the material. He is honest with what you need to know, and weeds out anything that isn't essential. We are already learning so much, he only teaches the practical stuff. He is very good at applying what you learn now to the bigger picture of how it will be used later, in future courses and in the medical field.
One of the best professors I've ever taken. Makes it very clear what you need to know and doesn't expect the world out of you. Show up, listen, study, and you'll do great!
AWFUL!! Worst instructor ever. He reads from the slides, doesn't elaborate on anything. He skips slides because he has nothing to say about them, but they could be on tests. He will test on complete body systems that he has never gone over. He likes to tell the class how his daughter who is a nurse is smarter than all the doctors she works for.
I think Sillanpaa is a great professor! I think he does a great job at preparing us for the exams and really pushes us! He has a good sense of humor and helps you to remember things that will be on the exam. It is no surprise that you have to study for this class and it will be challenging, but Sillanpaa is a great choice for 201!
He's fine. Not many complaints nor things that make him stand out. Just make sure you study, go to office hours and TA hours. Ask for help if you don't understand! This material is dense. Know that many of your peers are in the same boat as you, and there's a great chance that they don't understand the same things you're confused about.
Dr. Sillanpaa is probably my favorite professor. He is a little scary at first, but he really does want you to pass. He clearly lays out what you need to know and what you don't. He not only explains the concepts but relates them to examples you will see in the field so you can understand them. This is a hard class, so study on your own time!
His study guides are more than the exam is based on but he is a good lecturer that is willing to answer questions at any time.
At first he seems intimidating but he actually cares. If you don't study, you will not pass this class. Do the study guides they help. He only teaches us what he knows we will need as nurses which helps. He always answers questions so don't be afraid to ask. He is one of my favorite professors. Attendance is important ther's a lot ot learn
Great instructor! Knows his stuff exceedingly well, and will answer any questions you may have.
Brian was the best professor I have ever had for any science course. He relates a lot of the lectures to real life concepts which makes it easy to understand. He draws things out on the board to make sure his students understand and his tests and lectures are based off a study guide that is easy to follow and is almost exactly what is on the test.
doesn't really know what is going on at least in this course
Didnt have any idea on what was going on in the class. He gave me the creeps and seemed kind of unprofessional. The class was an easy A as long as you put in the work and effort.
I really loved this professor, he made learning fun. This was a hard class but he really tried to make sure that he was doing things to help you understand. We did kahoots before all exams. If you really want to do good go to his or the IA's office hours.
He's actually pretty nice, his organization skills could be better in terms of placements of the power points. However it is nice to have a professor who doesn't take down participation. And going to his lectures he explains a lot of detail so if you want to miss its fine but remember you are missing out on a lot of information to help you for exam
What a great professor! His lectures are amazing, and he has a channel on Youtube that you can watch the lecture before coming to class. It was an easy class because he makes it fun and easy to understand. Take this class with him if you want to learn and succeed because that is his goal! I feel so much more prepared for Med- School!
Silllanpaa is honestly one of my favorite teachers from this past semester. He's easy going and has a good sense of humor. He tries to make connections with his students and it shows that he enjoys teaching. He loves class participation in answering questions in class or from Kahoots.
"i have nothing to add to this slide" only had weekly participation + 4 exam grades for the whole semester
I do not recommend SIllanpaa for SCI-150. He was typically late and very unorganized. Nothing taught during lecture was relevant to the quizzes/ exams.
could be because of the learning style right now because of covid but lectures were very boring. assignments were very clear he just posts the details of the assignment very close to the due date. I showed up to his class literally 3 times out of the year and passes. doesn't really care for participation. didn't learn anything related to my field.
"I have nothing to say about this slide" was the most used phrase during lectures and says its not important even though it shows up on the exam. There is no other assignments to help the students succeed except for participation. Additionally, he shows no emotion during office hours and acts careless for improving your grade.
He was not very engaged in lectures. His favorite phrase was "I do not have much to say about this slide". When he said that something wasn't important , it ended up showing up on the exam. He gave out false information about testing. He made the material/concepts seem easier than what showed up on the exam. Sillanpa didn't seem enthused to teach.
At the beginning of the semester he was okay, but as we got into lectures he became very boring and continuously skipped slides that ended up being really important on exams. During his office hours, he would always say "you have to look that up" or "go to YouTube". Only exams and participation points were graded.
Professor sillanpaa is a nice guy with a good sense of humor. Kind of dull with lectures and doesnt elaborate on important topics as much as he should. But, the topics he does explain in detail he makes very understandable. Its a very hard class regardless of who you have, so expect to study lots.
Isn't very understanding and a bit rude. I would not have him as an instructor again. Isn't as caring and compassionate as most other professors are, or should be.
Honestly a good guy, and very elaborate, I didn't study enough and that's on me. good guy though and teaches the class well. You will have to read outside of class and that's just typical for all anatomy courses.
He is super rude and isnt connected with any of his students. He lectures very dull and doesnt help very much when asking questions just makes you feel bad for asking them.
literally one of the worst professors ive ever had. when asked something he responds with "idk" like not helpful at all. only FOUR TEST grades for the whole class plus participation and connect, so basically if you dont do well on the tests youre screwed. gcu anatomy professors are so bad, but sillanpaa is most def the worst
So, if you do not study effectively for this class, you will not do well. There are many people who have negative things to say about Sillanpaa, and with this being my second time taking a class with him, I can honestly say just pay attention and study. This is a college-level class in a pretty rigorous program, if you do horribly that's on you.
This was my first time having Dr. Sillanpaa as a professor. He teaches hard classes - yes, but he heavily emphasizes being self sufficient and how getting a good grade is 90% studying on your own. I completely agree with this sentiment! He wants us to be prepared for post-grad studies. Please do your own work and take in all of the lecture material
His lectures were not very valuable, I could have learned just as much by reading the textbook. He was very kind and funny, but if you struggle with biology/anatomy, I would get a different professor. I would take him again because his tests were very easy. It is also only tests and participation in the grade book, so STUDY.
Dr Sillanpaa is a very nice guy but a bit disorganized and his lectures consists primarily of just reading off PowerPoint slides which you can do at home. He doesnt take participation either at all other than completing homework assignments. The PowerPoints are very long as well. The tests include a lot of info, but study guides are provided.
Sillanpaa is a great professor and I would definitely take his class again. His class does require a lot of studying but that is typical with all anatomy classes. If you pay attention in class, take extra notes on what he explains in class and do his study guides you will pass. He really knows what he's taking about and it great at explaining.
he is a nice prof and records all his lectures so class is not mandatory but i do suggest you go. His exams are pretty normal for Bio classes and you work backwards to get answers so I would def say this class is not one to easily slack off on. his lectures are not interesting but ask questions and if your classmates are interactive its not too bad
Dr. Sillanpaa is a hilarious professor! In addition, he lays out the information in a memorable manner. He doesn't require attendance. However, if you want to do well, I would highly suggest you attend the class. Patho is a pretty hard class, but Dr. Sillanpaa made it so much easier!
Dr. Sillanpaa wasn't too bad of a professor. He was nice and his tests weren't too bad. This class is already difficult due to the amount of information needed to memorize. He thoroughly went through the slides that would correlate to the test and even did some review before the exams.
He made a difficult course seem easier. This class was a very lecture and test heavy so obviously, you need to put in the work but he made the lectures funny and interesting especially for taking it at 9 am. You can tell he knows what he is talking about and uses his personal experience in the examples to help him understand. Highly recommend
Professor Sillanpaa is highly knowledgeable and always willing to explain concepts from different angles. In class, he's down to Earth and relatable to students which makes them easily approachable. The class itself is journal article heavy, I would recommend having read these articles beforehand and asking about them in class.
