At first I thought he was easy, his quizzes sure are and his grammar lessons dont always make sense. But then he started grading kinda hard on the essays, you MUST follow the MLA format and for sure show up for peer reviews or else he takes of tons of points. He offers extra credit for getting tutored though.. he himself is not helpful though
He's nice, I enjoyed his dry sense of humor. As long as you read the articles he assigns and work hard on your essays you'll do just fine. He's very understanding and very nice
He is a awsome teacher. he helps his studens and he is not hard. One thingh tought you have to work to pass his class, and hat is writing 4 eesays. and readind some texts. its easy but if don't come to the class alot then you will problay get an f or d
4essays, 4quizzes that cant be made up. he's really really nice and cares about his students, if you ever have trouble or are absent, always tell him by email. he gave me really good grades, and gave me specific comments on my paper, which didnt really make me a better writer. his grammar lessons sometimes he doesnt know what hes doing i think.
At first he starts out easy, but later on he grades your essays a little harshly. But he is an extremely cool teacher! Funny, interesting, and gives out chocolate treats. Quizzes are easy but the essays are not. But he puts a lot of his time writing detailed comments on your essay. He is very nice and understanding. You work hard, you get A!
Somewhat hard class and could be boring, but it is a 1A course, and Prof. Smith does a good job at helping you pass the class with a good grade, and enjoy coming to class. He has a great dry sense of humor that keeps the class awake, and is always available for questions. Your writing skills will improve after taking this course with Smith.
this teacher is a good man. he spends alot of timne writing comments onur essay to help u understand what u did wrong. in addition he is vey helpful at his office hours. not easy a but if you do the 4 essay's you will probaly will get an A like me
He is the coolest professor. Really cares about u doing well in his class. Very easy 2 talk 2. Treats u like an adult. Really funny, hella smart, very helpful. Really improved my writing. Readings interesting. Expects u 2 give ur opinion but makes it fun. u will not regret taking his classes. Highly recommended. Guy rocks.
He's ok.the class is really easy, but this quarter he got really behind on correctin papers.we also didnt have class for like 10 days which may be good for some and bad for others.partcipate in class and ull do fine.the lit book is only needed for a lil bit and after that u never really look at it again. but i didnt learn much
Brian is very disorganized. He took forever to grade essays and gave essays after another. First few weeks of this class was using books to learn few grammars and the rest of the weeks were all essays!! Just that brian marks every single little thing on your essay and then passes you, other than that, hes an okay teacher.
Other posts should b fair. Had week after Thksgvng to do research projs. Said he was there if u wanted help. Spent lots of time with everybody 2 times I went. Wanted help u should have come. Told us marks lots but only counts what he lectures on. Learned a lot on essays. Most reading okay. Essays were late, said he had lot of classes.
He's the kind of teacher that will help you out as much as he can. On the last day of class and last day to turn the porfolios, i was an hour late (the class was 50mins long), and luckily he was still there at the classroom, so i got to turn it in, and i passed the class.
disorganized, always give back late papers, boring......
I liked the class. 5 papers, 1 oral report, some quizzes...1 book was a cool graphic novel. Show up and do the work and you do well.
Brian is without a doubt the most thorough, thoughtful, understanding and qualified instructor I've ever had at DeAnza. I'm a better writer for taking his course. Great sense of humor, seemingly endless store of knowledge. If you're considering taking him, do yourself a favor and sign up. Not enough space to give this guy credit. A+ to Brian Smith.
Great professor who knows what he's doing. Organized and very clear on what he is looking for from your essays. Pay attention to the instructions and follow them. Very fair grader, it's not hella easy but also not impossible to get an A. He really puts effort in teaching, take him if you want to learn. Not boring in my opinion.
I had a great experience in Prof. Smith's class. He was thorough and very helpful. It was easy to approach him about different things in class and he always made time to help me out. My writing definitely improved and I learned a lot. Smith wants to see you succeed and improve. If you put forth a quality effort, you'll get an A.
He's Great
He is great! Class was super easy if you have somewhat decent writing skills. There were 3 essays, 1 group presentation, 1 easy final. Super easy reading quizzes (4-5 questions only). He is really nice and easy A. I would definitely recommend!
In the words of Kanye: Yo other English professors I'm really happy for you and Imma let you finish teaching, but Brian Smith is one of the greatest English professors of all time, all time!
GREAT GUY! GREAT PROFESSOR! I only have good things to say about Brian. He takes his time to ensure everyone understands what is going on. The class is mainly essay based - as long as he thinks you understand it and you have solid grammar you should be fine. The class goes by fast and it is fun. Take him! he's great!
Brian is a wonderful, knowledgeable prof. He takes time to make sure students understand the material and makes an effort to help you succeed in class. Although this is a writing class, it's obvious that he cares about you succeeding not only in school, but also in your career! The class itself is not too difficult. Definitely take him if you can!
He's a nice guy but awfully boring. Did not learn much from him. Make sure you be on time, participate in class and you'll do fair.
The class was really good. He wants you to do well and helps every way he can. Though this was a summer class he still made it fun and interesting. Best english class I've had so far. Recommend him highly.
Brian Smith's organization, planning, information booklet on the plays and related material were great. His handling of everything, difficult with 50 people, was terrific! Best Shakespeare trip I have been on.
Attendance is mandatory!!! he's very helpful but this is definitely not an easy class. You need to already know how to write, don't expect him to teach how fundamentals of writing.
If you want to feel as though your english class is a corporate office, this is for you. I go to SCHOOL and English because I want to be creative and learn. In this class I felt that everything had to do with job searching; I already have a job, so it was a pointless class for me to take. Must attend all classes, but if you only miss 1, no final.
Great class. Research paper on careers. Write the paper & choose a job or better job at the same time. One of few classes I have had that was really useful. So the poster before has a job, but I do too, & I want to research something I can really use now instead of the same save the world crap every other DA class has. Take this class if you can.
This class is very enjoyable and highly useful. You learn much more than you'd ever expect to learn in a GE English Writing class. The workload is also fair. It consists of a compare and contrast essay on short stories, a poetry presentation and a research paper on your career of choice. Mr. Smith is a great instructor; helpful and approachable!
He is a great teacher! the class is enjoyable and useful.
Super Writing instructor! He doesn't spoon feed his students but he helps anyone that asks him to his fullest potential. There are only 3 big assignments in the class but they are challenging and require work.
Great teacher! Tells u exactly what he wants with essays and how to do it. 5 essays. Interesting topics and readings. Works in silicon valley so he knows business. Knows microsoft word inside out and shows u how. Keeps it fun. Take the class.
Easy going. Wants u do well shows what to do on papers. Does attendance. Pretty good assignments. Do sensible work and EZ pass. Recommended. He had 5 but 5/6 papers standard eng 211. 1 friend had 7 in another class.
Very helpful teacher. He truly wants you to do well in all your essays. I took him for the summer and we only had 5 essays. He is great at explaining things, and if you ask questions he will do his best to help you. Attendance is mandatory, but he lets you work on your papers in class. Less HW if you actually take advantage.I would take him again.
knows his stuff. teachs u 2 chuz career, resume, find job, interview. 1 essy, grp proj, reserch paper. takes roll. most valubl class ive had.
Great guy, very helpful and reasonable! At first might seem scary but through out the class you will find him very helpful. Just do the work, ask him questions if you have any and you will do fine! I would take him again just because the things he talks about are so interesting.
Brian was such a nice guy. His class was easy, few homework assignments...mostly just essays. I found him an easy grader. If you attend every class he excuses you from the final, so I didn't have to take it. He knows a lot and I loved learning from him.
Reccomended. good teacher. take him.
Nice teacher!
Knows what being a student is like and is nice. Easy to talk to and helps if you ask. He explained how to write an essay in a way easy to understand. Very clear assignments. Dont try to fool him cause hes too smart and calls you on it. Really funny dry sense of humor. Will take other classes from him if I can.
The best English teacher I have EVER had , considering that I have been studying English as SL. If you have a class with him , just pay attention , ask whatever you need as he will respond.
Professor Smith is the best professor ever! Strongly recommend to international students.
One of the best professors I've ever had. Completely there for you if you ask, but you have to do the work. You can tell he really cares about your progress and he will definitely prepare you for UC level work. Makes you think, but by the end of the quarter you will be a better writer.
English is my second language and I took the class for fun. Turns out it gave much more than other major classes. Mr. Smith is a great professor. I learned not only about Shakespeare's work, also some important skills: Writing format template, speech delivery, and how to do effective powerpoint. In addition, he gave us some tips for our career.
Professor smith is a great teacher. I like his style. He's very clear and let's you know exactly what to expect and tells you exactly what the assignnts have to have. Easy grader. Work is fair and you really learn things to help you in your career. Smart, open, and helped me a lot. You’re lucky if you take him.
Professor Smith's lectures are straightforward. Taking this class will give you a great insight on the historical background and help you understand the plays better. He cares enough for his students to point out their mistakes, but kind enough not to take a lot of points off of them. Go to class regularly & do the assignments and you will be fine.
Very Helpful, Very Clear and Concise, Generous Grader, Excellent Explication of Historical Background
Professor smith is a great teacher with kool style. very clear and let's u know exactly what assignnts require. EZ grader. work is fair. u really learn things to help u in ur career. Smart, open. Helped me a lot. u’r lucky if you take him cuz he’s the one u measure other teachers to. Take him!!
As far as i am concerned, Mr. S is the best eng prof at De Anza. I took eng 211 & 1A with him. Explains everything clearly and gives u plenty of time to do the homework. Class is really interesting and fun. If you pay attention, u will get something to write about. Can't wait to take him again.
Brian is truly a great teacher that cares deeply about his students. Like me, if English is confusing to you, he is the teacher you want.He will teach you what you need to know to write better; grammar and punctuation will become easy and clear for you. Just do your work, show up and you'l do great in the class. Hooray for teachers like Mr. Smith!
He is the greatest teacher. His lectures are very clear.
Brian was a good professor because he teaches you, but at the same time he shows you what is the incorrect way. Helps you when you asks for it. Teaches you more on Microsoft Word. Would take him again for 1A
He gives what i want to improve my writing skills. Always be there for you. If u have any question, feel free to ask him. He is sometimes very strict but sometimes very hilarious. All the feedback he gave were so useful for me. I showed improvement every single essay with his feedback. Should take him!
Brian Smith is such a great professor, he's so nice and helpful. He is a tough grader but only to better your writing skills. Get ready to write essay after essay, he gives very good feedback and takes his time to help you out. If you have more than 1 1/2 absences you have to take the final. He also gave us cookies a couple times, which I like :)
He's great. Learned so much. Very thorough. Make sure you pay attention to detail. Definitely recommend!
Not as helpful as you thought, keeping asking you to go to the WRC, boring lecture. Anyway, you will get a pass grade if you show up 80%, you just need to focus on the portfolio.
breaks down writing process & makes it real easy 2 write essays. understandable. extremly helpful if u ask. go 2 office hrs if no time in class. u wont regret taking him. wrc can also help.
He is awesom and a very good teacher. Truly recommend him.
Mr. Smith is nice. He has a great sense of humor. He cares a lot about his students. HOWEVER, DONOT take his class if u don't expect hard works. U'll lose LOTS OF POINTS and FAIL the class if requirements are not met each assignment. Smith grades your works fairly but he'll also subtract plenty. BE PREPARED.
Class is about finding a career. I learned about the process of getting a job, business projects, and career. People can use about 90% what they learned in this course for real life. Class is really going to help me in the future trying to find a job. Such a great teacher! Is straight forward and wants nothing but the best for his students.
Tough grading on take home essays, yet he is the best professor I have ever taken in De Anza. Full attendance means you can skip the essay portion on the final. Not as helpful as you thought, but he is respected by every students
Professor Smith is a really nice teacher. He give good and useful feedback to your work. I have learnt a lot from his feedback not only on my academic study, not also for future career and life. In the Ewrt 2 Class, we focus on writing research papers about future jobs after graduate from school. The lectures are very meaningful! Take his class!
Highly recommended! Professor Smith' lecture is straightforward, and you can apply what you learned in the real life because the research paper is about the career. You choose one entry level job to do research and write an essay for it. He also cares about his students. He helps me with UC transfer essays. He wants us to succeed as much as we do.
A wise man and my all time favorite professor. I have taken three of his English class in different level. I am grateful that I could learn from him. Not really tough, but you gotta work. Caring and heartwarming. Respected by everyone. Take him if you can, as he may leave teaching career soon due to an old age.
Really useful and highly recommended! His research paper seems hard, but as long as you put effort you will be fine, and you can gain something valuable from the class. Take him!
You will master your grammar skills. 1 GIANT ESSAY which he has you work in parts. 1st part is graded around week 7, then you add on your 2nd part to the 1st part and that's graded as a whole around week 11. Groups presentations are professional, so don't be too silly. Grammar final is based on his handouts. Gave us treats on the final exam.
Write one paper in parts over the class. Liked how was focused on our future career, helped make up my mind about what I wanted to do. Great instructor, has clear directions, knows what hes doing. Good feedback on essays. Use MLA format & Msoft word program but shows you how. You learn a lot that benefits you for other classes & jobs after college
His lectures can be boring but he is clear on what he wants. 3 essays, and a few quizzes. If you come to every lecture, you don't have to take the final and most of the time, he let's you out early. Overall a great learning experience.
Class is very engaging, nice pace, also was relevant to life and not just study based. Awesome instructor! Wished I could say the same about some of my other instructors.
Professor Smith's class has offered great insights into the business world, and I have learned so much about how to design neat slides, write in professional format, and make effective presentations. It is going to be a very helpful class if you want to know more about the business world.
He is an alright professor, not too great. Never in my life have I had a teacher be so picky on MLA Format. He highly scrutinises the format of your essay to what he believes to be most professional. He's a pretty easy grader when it comes to the English material.
Course was very helpful in improving writing skills. I realy liked how the things we learned are very applicable. To the future. Professor is well organized. Learned to write in a professional way, and liked listening to the presentations on finding a career and job.
Brian lets you work in class, provides good group discussions, and is overall pretty funny. I wish he would have given an in depth breakdown analysis of some amazing essays, to teach the students WHY the essays are so great. I did not learn as much as I'd hoped. If English is your focus, I suggest a more thorough professor.
Brian is a pretty chill teachers. Took him during summer quarter, and my advise is show up to every class so you don't have to take in class essay for final. He gives you full credit for this too! He posts material online, but doesn't go over much. He expects you to go over it all yourself. There isn't much discussion about the reading, but quizzes
Dunno what 1A class below took, not mine. He coverd essays, reading, grp discussions of reading, MLA. Dudes, summer class. Know goin in only 1/2 the time for hmwk so lab time saves u. Take other time if want more topics. Im @diffcollege but took summer class 4 GE. Wish my coll. profs helpd as much. Good class, learned a lot. Would take him again.
This course was not easy for me but I can honestly say that professor Smith is great at his job. He really seems to care and want to help students do their best!
My feelings are mixed. He's knowledgeable but has difficulty expressing himself. He gets a little awkward and quiet while lecturing. He is very strict about MLA format and not like what you did in high school. It's the hardest part of the class. Readings are interesting. No after class help. I did learn lots to his credit. Easy A. Very nice person.
Took his summer course and it was pretty straightforward. There were 4 essays, with 4 readings and 4 very easy and short multiple choice quizzes on them. Most of the time he just lets you spend the whole entire time in the computer lab to work on your essays. He grades pretty easily.
His EWRT2 class is all about learning how to use tools to find a job, and researching about a career. There is one group presentation, and one research paper that is divided in two parts. He grades really easy and there are no readings or tests. He doesn't teach much about writing, but the information about job seeking in his class is useful.
All you have to do are..... Put a lot of effort on your papers!! Show up! Do not miss and delay. Care about MLA format! Nice professor:D Thank you.
let me just start off by saying, he is super picky about the MLA format. there is an insanely long (17 steps I think) step by step of how he wants you to have the MLA format. he is a pretty chill professor and the class consists of 1 research project split into RP1+RP2, a group presentation+write up, and like 2 quizzes. theres no reading or hw
Class has one presentation and a 2 pt paper. His rep is best prof in English and class tough to get into. I learned lots from him I can use in my career. Below post unfair and I call bee S cuz paper not 25 pages, not a tough grader, college has Word in lab where we meet at. Don't shade somebody just cuz u don't do any work.
Love him!!! Amazing professor !! Take his class hea so adorable!!
My sister and I took Prof Smith's class. He is the BEST English professor in De Anza!!!!! He is very kind and always want to help you. His course design is the best! It's very practical and you will learn a lot about job search, and proper formatting etc. The main assignment include 1 group presentation, RP1, RP2. continued
the workload for this class is SO MUCH lesser compare to some other EWRT professor! everything is very organized, he gives very clear instructions. Everything is posted in My portal. so that means you can start writing the RP well in advance. Choosing his class is one of the correctest class selection I have made in De Anza. Super Highly Recommend!
To the review on June 22: He does pay a lot of attention to MLA formatting. BUT everything is written so clearly in his instruction. If you just read&follow his instruction, you get FULL marks for MLA formatting. AND you get a few hours of lab time just to work on the format! So, stop complaining! Your comment isn't fair. He is doing his best help!
BEST BEST BEST !!!! TAKE HIS CLASS!! I WISH I HAD TAKEN PROF. SMITH FOR EWRT 1 TOO!!!! all those people who are complaining are those who don't put in any effort and still hope to get an A. Wake up please! Before you complain, you should at least try, work hard, read his instructions. don't just keep whining whining and whining non stop.
I don't understand why some complain on his format requirement. He provides a detailed STEP by STEP instruction with Screenshot on how to set up the format template. and He will provide feedback if your template is not right. If a student still cannot get the right format, it's because the student is unwilling to put in any effort
Prof. Smith's class is so popular that registration is like a war. I don't understand why some are complaining about the Research Paper when you only need to write a min of 11 pages in total for Both Research paper part 1&2, and it is double-spaced. The workload in this class is much lesser than any other EWRIT prof. in De Anza.
best English Prof in De Anza!
He's the best English prof at De Anza. He deeply cares about students' success. He prepares you well for your major. He shares his career experience that I found inspirational. I learned a lot about life from him. He also reads my personal statement and gives great grammar feedback and opinions. Just ask what you want, he's always willing to help.
He is literally one of th best professors i ever had at de anza. English wws always one of those annoying courses for me. This class not even helped me with my future job but also he teally cares about all students. Just ask him and he will help you. Such a great professor, so polite and helpful. Clear in grading and overal awesome professor.
This professor is nice but boring most of the time. Attendance is not mandatory but you don't have to take the in-class final if you have a perfect attendance. I took this course as prerequisite but if you really want to know more English, this is not the best option.
This was the most useful class I've taken at De Anza. He provides you with citing/essay templates that I've found really useful in a bunch of my future classes, and the research project we do in this class about what you want to do in the future really helped me reevaluate my life and my career options. Definitely a useful course.
I am so happy I took Professor Smith. He prepared us for our major by teaching us how to write a professional research paper on our career. Professor Smith is one of the best instructors at De Anza College. Some suggestions I have for his future students: Follow his clear directions, turn in your assignments on time, and show up to EVERY class!
Prof. Smith helped me out a-lot. If you show that you care, he will too. He only wants the best for his students. Attendance isnt mandatory but showing up everyday is worth it when the final comes around. He had us so easy work, but the only downside is it HAD to be his format on Microsoft word 2016 ONLY. So if you have Apple, good luck.
Amazing professor who revolves the class around your future career. Research paper is about your future profession. Prof. Smith really cares about his students and wants the best for them. Class really sharpens your MLA skills. Writing skills, not so much. Easy class if you can follow instructions exactly.
Brian is the most chill professor I have ever taken. You attendance is mandatory and honestly can be an easy A if you meet him halfway and follow instructions AND turn the assignments on time. He really cares for his students. I don't think I acquired much writing skills but I LOVED this class and Brian so much! There are 4 essays!
He is the most caring professor I've ever seen in my life. He has such a warm heart and encourages every student sincerely. The MLA formatting skill that I learned from him is really useful. As long as you follow what he teaches would get A easily.
Brian Smith is of the best teachers at De Anza. He really cares about his students and gives the students helpful feedback. Professor Smith always picks low-cost textbooks and he is always accessible outside the class. Take his class, you are going to learn and gain invaluable skills.
Profesor Smith is one of the best teachers I had at De Anza. I took EWRT 1A and 2 with him. He cares about the students and helps you to understand the assignments. He gives you useful tools for school and for life. English 2 is focused in jobs research and he shares all his knowledge with you. Take his class, youll love it.
I was really disappointed in this class. He just focuses on MLA format which in my opinion is not a subject for EWRT2... There are no feedback from him and every time you email him, his replies are borderline rude, as if you are bothering him. Never got my grades for my finals nor third assignment. He is not flexible at all if you don't have word
Best professor at De Anza!! Take him, you won't regret.
I took Professor Smiths asynchronous class last quarter. I was pleased by the response rate when asking for help or questions. Professor Smith is very understanding and extremely helpful. It is easy to pass the class as long as you respect the material and deadlines. I never really enjoyed writing and reading classes however I enjoyed this class.
Yalu have 3 paper to write in total, all are pretty easy and doable. For honors you have to write 50% more than the regular class. Prof. Smith responds quick to emails quickly and holds optional office hours.
5 essays and no final exam. He's nice and caring to his students. He literally gives out full points for all essay outline draft assignments. He goes over the MLA format thoroughly at each class meeting. Easy grader.
Honestly just dont take this class. Hes not rude or anything but his classes are honestly kind of terrible to sit through. He will go over the same thing for the entire 2 hours and when he says hes moving on he really isnt. However the work load in this class is very easy. But if you have a learning disability of any kind run for the hills.
The class was made up of 4 essays with no final exam. I enjoyed the lectures as he gave a lot of insight and information regarding the reading which in turn helped for the actual essay writing. He's a great teacher and really pushes you to put your best work forward. I highly recommend this class especially if you want to improve your writing.
Want to learn how to write? Wouldn't recommend. Focused mainly on MLA format and not actual mechanics of writing. 4 essays, one of which was a reflection on your learning. Understanding if you ask for extensions. Says textbook is required but I passed without it so don't waste your money. Overall nice but boring. Take if looking for an easy A
