Brian Smith it the worst math teacher I have ever had. When a teacher uses comments such as lets make sausage out of this problem and lets bend reality over instead of teaching. You may have some problems learning the material. ?boy needs to go away
he's a little odd, but a nice guy who is usually able to explain things well. He is wierd, but nice.

Lectures right out of textbook, but is able to explain things if you just ask. Tests were relevant. Class was not all that difficult.
Always teaches out of the book, blesses you with the same maroon shirt for the length of the term. Horrible jokes but a great time to catch up on lost sleep, especially in the front row. Likes to show his belly from time to time.

very helpful. speaks in soft tone. lets you out of class early sometimes. exams are very relevant to class notes. likes to follow the book. but hearing him lecture makes it much easier to remember. might fall asleep. cus i have.

Best math teacher I've had yet at this school. I actually understood what the he was talking about in class. Tests are based exactly on lecture and homework.
He seemed kinda odd, or happy .
Great class! Explains subjects clearly, tests are easy if you do the homework.
I liked Smith, he explained the material clearly and i never fell asleep once in his class
Great teacher, easy to follow materials and grade on the curve. 411 if you do homework and use the study guide the test will be easy.
He's been smokin the crack, but still remembers how to teach math! I don't know what you expect a math class to be... but for a math class it kicks ass. 50 minutes of solid information and examples. Failsafe.
Nice guy but doesn't always explain stuff well. He's very hit & miss when it comes to explanations. Tests are very muchso like homework and stuff discussed in class but the subject matter is rather difficult by most people's standards.
I like math profs who follow the text closely and expound on it clearly like Smith - lets me annotate the book to understand better when working on HW. Best math prof ever.
He is not very interesting, but he knows his stuff. Do the homework and you'll be fine.
Totally awesome sweater with llamas on it that I'll never forget. He was rather boring (and refused to be technological when I took him.. no email or anything) but I do agree with the "failsafe" comment
lectures are word for word out of the text. midterm and quiz questions are very similar if not sometimes directly out of the study guide. there are "group" quizzes. watch out....you might fall asleep in this class...
He's a little strange, mixes up words and numbers at times, but overall not bad.
It is hard to follow the lectures because he has problems talking. He does teach the class ok, and the tests are pretty easy.
easy, but agonizing to sit in class, taking this class is like taking a self study course...you have to learn it all from the book
Worst teacher in the history of teaching.
I really do think he's a nice guy, but he's a nice guy who should consider doing something other than teaching math. The tests sucked, and so did the lectures.

I'm sure that he's a nice guy, but he's a crappy math teacher. The only thing I learned from his class was how to pass a multiple choice exam. I am retaking this class just to understand it.
He is very poor at teaching and math itself. He does not prepare for the class, just bring copy of textbook. Do not take his crappy class
I can't understand anything he talks about and when I ask a question about something I thought I understood he makes it more confusing. I have to learn everything on my own.
horrible teacher... worst than scarbough... have to learn everything on my own or with help of the TAs. Had about 3 typos in his midterm of 10 questions... and it was all multiple choice. Horrible teacher!!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
Worthless! Copied lectures directly from the book. No point in going to class.
His lectures were copied straight from the book and the tests were unbelievably easy. Not too particularily helpful in person, but definitely not challenging either.
Average teacher. Just shows up to class, gives a lecture and leaves. Not too helpful, but okay. His class is usually very loose, and he seems to be okay with it. He doesn't show much emotion or care for much.
Horrible teacher. Doesn't help at all and treats students like garbage. He shows no emotion and hates everything.
A little confusing, but has easy tests.
He is probably a nice guy, but isn't helpful, can't teach math and is too lazy to write his own tests, so you get tested on stuff that you haven't even learned about. If you're good at teaching yourself, it shouldnt be too hard. Don't expect to get much help from him.
Class is a waste of time. Way too easy, he goes over basics several times as if he's teaching elementary school. He hates it if you ask questions that go more advanced than he wants. He isn't hard to understand though, and tests are a cinch. First math class I ever took that was an easy A.
He hands back your test results on these little sheets of paper. He cut mine out wrong so I couldn't make out the results. Then he acted like I was troublesome 'cause I wanted to atleast see my test. He couldn't find the tests and so sent me packing. HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!
He babies a lot, and it makes his lectures really irritating.
its was very unclear when he was teaching. I always felt lost and he made multiple mistakes that confused me a lot. He hardly looks back to see if the class is getting it and hardly looks for questions.
Was a decent teacher for mth 112, but when I took 252 he was horrible, I spent 4 hours a day in the math learning center trying to teach the material to myself even though I went to class every day. (for my efforts I was rewarded with a B-, my worst grade ot OSU)

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROF. You won't learn a thing from lecture. He just copies his lecture right out of the book examples and he often makes mistakes when he copies them down. If you haven't taken calc in high school you will have to teach yourself or learn from your TA.
Worst math professor. He babies the hell out of you. He'll stand at the board for 30 seconds waiting for someone to say what 3 minus 2 is for no apparent reason. He could take a peanut butter sandwhich and make it sound confusing.
this guy didn't teach me one thing, sometimes he would ask questions like what is four plus four, no joke
Well, when I make it to class he explains things well, and it all makes since, if I could just make it to those 9 am classes it would be an easy A.
I don't know if this was his first time teaching it or what, but his final exam was horrible, an average of 67%(plus there were careless errors and multiple correct answers). if you can avoid him for this course, do so, for your own good!!!
I didnt understand anything from this guy, horrible teacher, luckily the book had everything i needed. avoid him if possible but if not, amuse yourself in class by noticing his ability to tech to only 1 person in the front, and his incessant twitch, thats what got me through class. Dont drink coffee before class because you wont be able to sleep.

terrible class avoid at all costs

Worst professor ever... can't teach, can't speak correctly, and doesn't know the material. Had him for a math course in the past.. This guy is the worst professor in the university. AVOID THIS GUY AT ALL COSTS!!!!
Hardest class I ever took... I dont think Mr Smith knows how to teach very well... I ended up spending waaay too much time studying the lessons that he and my rec teacher couldnt teach

HORRIBLE. avoid this class if at all possible. it is the biggest waste of time and money.
This instructor doesn't care, period. His lesson plan is impossible. I never knew if I was getting it because I could never check my answers! The homework came back 2 wks later, then you took the test the next day! I have NEVER known a math teacher to do this! Ruined my 4 point, got a B, even though I tried like hell. Student's worst nightmare!
That class was on the 3rd floor. If only there were windows or some other means of ending it quickly...
Extremely boring. Lectures in monotone right out of the book using photocopied sheets off the textbook. When I went to talk to him, he didn't seem like he was happy about it and I get the feeling he just doesn't care.
This guy sucks at teaching. He writes things way too small as if he's writing a note for himself. Today, I noticed some students even brought binoculars so they can read his writing on board. He doesn't realize he is lecturing students and couldn't care less if they can see what he's writing let alone understand.
Sooooooooooooooooooooooooo . . . boring and extremely disorganized, didn't even know what homework was due when and there was know way to know becuase he doesn't have blackboard or a website or anything. There was little to know communication between him and the TA. AVOID!!
Didn't seem like he knew the material much better then the students in the class. Just read of slides made by the teacher before him the whole class. Dosen't really like answering questions and dosen't write legibally. Takes an hour and a 20 min to cover what would take about 30 min for any other teacher. Other then that, he's a good guy.
The only amusing thing about this class was this prof's spelling mistakes. According to him, calculus is spelled "cacluculus" or something like that. He writes verrry small, makes a lot of dumb mistakes, and is sometimes rude to people who ask a question in class. Pretty easy tests, though. All multiple choice.
This guy can't explain even the basic aspects of calculus. After taking his class, all I have to do to fall asleep is just imagine that I am back in there. His tests are all multipul choice, so you get virtualy no credit for knowing how to solve stuff, just for getting the right answer. Avoid this guy at all cost!
Terrible prof. He writes really small, all his lectures are just doing the sample problems from the book, and if anyone asks for help he just tells them to look on their own time.
Hes a really nice guy, and he knows the material pretty well. But he pretty much just copies down what the books says word for word, so the lectures are kinda pointless. The tests are easy!! Though if you miss like one question it drops you almost a whole letter grade.
- Teaches from the book. - No new examples. - Doesn't explain anything. - Not a PHD. - Worst math prof on campus. - Tests are hard. - You never know what's going to be on the tests. - Doesn't curve. - Doesn't care about students. - DO NOT TAKE MATH FROM THIS GUY if you want a good grade!!
His lectures are a bore and he walks into the class looking like he hates his life. Go to review sessions before tests and write down the example problems as they will be VERY similar. Get a hold of old tests, if possible. Put all of that on your notecard, and you are golden. Easy A if you're not a dummy who can't manipulate numbers.
The lectures are very boring and makes you want to skip the lectures. He is very unclear and unhelpful during the office hours. Horrible teacher all in all. Confuses himself and talks to the chalk board rather than the class. :(
He is very easy on his tests and uses the same tests year in and year out. He may not be the "most exciting thing ever" however if I had to choose between him and most professors. I would choose him hands down based on the fact that he is a very easy going professor and he doesn't assign much homework :)
Wow, where do I begin? I took ST 201 with this guy and it was HORRID! It was so boring, he was so unorganized, he seemed very uncomfortable with teaching us what he was, he copied the book word-for-word and offered no alternatives to learning the material. However, he was pretty good about his tests.
Copies the textbook word for word which is frusterating when trying to learn the material. Just note the examples he uses as they are almost word for word on a test. TAs and hmwk will help you save your grade.
The good news is you never actually have to go to class. Since all he does is read from the textbook and copy problems from the textbook onto an overhead (slooow), you can look at the homework assignment online, show up at recitation and turn it in, and show up on test days. You can use a 5 x 7 note card, so it's cake. This guy is boring as hell.
Ok so this guy has very very low homework, and every test is just the questions out of the book. But class is boring as hell. Overall, a pretty easy course.
HORRIBLE! if you already know material and want a low homework easy grade, do it. If you are in need of some instruction, look elsewhere.
straight from the book, word for word. not helpfull at all if your planning on actually learning anything!
Not a good teacher, talks himself in circles and reads from the book. You are better off just reading the book and NEVER going to class unless its the day before the midterm
DO NOT GET HIM IF AT ALL POSSIBLE!!!!!! If I knew he was going to be this bad I would have waited a term or something for another choice. Homework is straight out of the book, just like his lectures. He is very strange, and when he teaches he copies examples straight from the book. He can be mean if you ask a question. Tests are MC, and suck.
How does this person have a job? Obviously not for teaching abilities. You won't learn anything in his classroom. Your grade will come from your own efforts to learn the material that Brian is incapable of teaching. Do whatever you have to, but don't take this teacher!
I could teach this class better than him!!!
Seriously...how is this teacher still NOT fired? Does Oregon have an incredibly undermined budget that they still allow horrendous people like these? That is why OSU is starting to go downhill: a lack of good, efficient teachers who can actually teach. He just lectures straightly from the book. He doesn't care about students. NEW TEACH PLZ!
Although everything was from the book, he explained everything that would be in the test, he was will to use office hours to help and he brings his personality to the class.
Avoid this prof. He knows nothing. He may had to buy his PHD to be able to work. He just read from the book. If a student asks a question, he wouldn't answer because he doesn't know the answer. A week later, he would email the whole class the answer. I think he may have got it from another prof. useless hw. hard quizes. you maynot pass the class :(
Brian Smith i find is not a very good teacher. He reads straight from the book, which does not help that much, and argues with students. Granted the book is terrible so the lectures are terrible. The test and quiz's are way harder than what we have learned. Overall i would suggest someone else.
I have 200 credits, worst professor yet. Reads out of the book, hard quizzes, doesn't know math, makes fun of you for asking questions, true/false midterm and final (horrible format) with too little time. I am filing a formal complaint with the dean of mathematics. He is honestly a disgrace to OSU and should not be teaching 306.
Horrible teacher. I'm getting a C in this class though I'm acing in my Calculus class due to his disorganized teaching style. Read from the book, don't go to detail and make quizzes harder than ever. Consistently avoid student's question and pretty much useless. I'm glad that I have Dave as my GTA, otherwise this class would be like miserable.
Try to avoid this instructor. I usually give the benefit of the doubt but there is no excuse this time. All lectures and examples are out of the book, literally. Told us midterm was multiple choice, then it was short essay. Didn't make enough copies of the midterm, then lost the tests afterward. Assigns tough HW that he can't do himself if you ask.
goes off on tangents a lot. dont really know what to write down/ whats important.
ABSOLUTLEY HORRIBLE! I'm not just saying that either because I did bad or something. Avoid at all cost. Seriously. Doesn't respond to emails, reads the book in class and doesn't explain any more than what the book does. T/F midterms/finals. Wont pass unless your a math wizard, get tutored, ask the TA questions, or at lucky at guessing on the tests.
I have taken 6 math classes at Oregon State and Brian Smith is by far the worst. I received a B in this class, however, I had to teach myself the entire course. Stopped going to class because working with the textbook on my own was WAY more helpful. Doesn't answer any questions in lecture. Should be fired without a doubt.
It is almost certain to say that Mr. Smith is one of the worst professors at OSU. He lacks professionalism or passion for his classes. He's an extremely lazy person. I would highly avoid him. The material is only easy if you have already learned this before. Overall, he just doesn't care about students and it shows. Very very bad teacher.
This teacher requires too much homework, doesn't explain well, and expects you to "look up google"
he is the worst teacher in OSU by far. dont understand how other teachers lose their jobs yet this dumbass is still teaching. avoid at all costs.
Brian Smith provides zero insight of his own, and literally writes up his lectures (often) word for word from the book. His lectures might almost be considered plagiarism. On top of all this, he is inconsistent and mumbles everything. Only go to lecture for laughs. Search youtube: "khanacademy" to learn all of the linear algebra you need to pass.
HORRIBLE
It is an embarrassment to Oregon State that this guy is still allowed to teach. If this is any indicator of what OSU considers acceptable teaching, then I am transferring to UDub.
This man does not understand the information he teaches, but expects us all to. He just reads the textbook and while that isn't even very clear he refuses to do anything else(examples/expand on the topic) i had to withdraw from the class because he didn't teach anything.
Does not answer questions and reads lectures strait from the book.
Taught word for word out of the text, and the text was terrible.
Brian Smith is probably the worst professor ive had in my college career. Reads straight out of the textbook, cant answer ??s. Pro tip if you get stuck with him: DO NOT ATTEND CLASS. Huge waste of time, i learned much more while watching youtube videos about the same thing than in his lectures. Do attend recitation though and get help if needed.
Worse teacher I've had in my 4 year college career. Everything that is said on this site is true. Notes straight from book (which is bad too). If it wasn't for the TA there would be no way I would even pass this class. Needs to be fired.
The class might as well just be the recitation and nothing else, since that's the only time you'll be actually learning the material. Unless you want to hear the audiobook version of the (terrible) text as narrated by an incredibly annoying voice, just avoid lecture. Seriously. No idea how Brian was cleared to teach 300-level math at all.
So very, very, very, very, very bad. Should not have gotten my tuition money, because I could have done his job just as easily, since he just reads from the book in class and fails miserably at answering questions. Wikipedia and recitation are the only way to get through his class. Charles Barkley could teach this class better than Brian Smith.
If you were to graduate from college next term and you have to take a math class with Smith, it is definitely worth staying one more term. Anything is better than this class. Every single thing (including examples) was from the horrible book, availability of extra help was poor (after asking a question you would be referred to the book again)...
So many stories I could tell, without the 350 word limit. Worst instructor I have ever had. Abysmally disorganized. His TA (I forget the name) was a saint and was the only reason that class was bearable. The class itself was pretty easy.
