GREAT teacher. Lecture attendance isn't required but bascially if u go u are guaranteed an A because he tells u everything u need to know for the tests. The 5 tests r easy. Discussion is a waste of time but attendance is mandatory for it. This guy really loves what he does, is very enthusiastic, and funny. Great professor
He is the best teacher on this campus. His lectures flow naturally and he reviews every day. The day before the test he reviews the entire lectures and readings. I wish every teacher on the KU campus was like him. I had no interest in Econ and didn't know anything and I got an A!
TAKE THIS CLASS! If you need to get an econ credit, he will get you through it. Attendance is not required, but it is if you want to get an easy A. Seriously, his power pts have EVERYTHING you need to know for the tests, and you are well prepared. You don't even need to open the book if you go to class. Also, he channels Richard Dreyfus. Its scary!
Excellent teacher. He is very engaging and knows what he is talking about. If you need an econ credit, this is the class to take.
Tries very hard to keep class interesting throughout semester.
Best prof i have ever had at KU (i'm 4th yr) Take his class and you will have a good/easy time in econ
As an economist, he is very interested and excited by what he teaches. His tests aren't too hard, but they do require some studying. Just go to class, take notes, and you'll be fine. Discussion classes are pathetically easy points.
Great professor and interesting class!
Great teacher, knows what he's talking about, and makes learning economics as engaging as possible
This class was extremely hard the test are tricky and are not straight forward. The lectures are interesting go to office hours that would have def. helped me.
Excellent professor. Best lecturer I've ever had. If you take econ try and get Staihr. Makes what could be a dull subject into something pretty fascinating and interesting to learn. Go to class and take good notes and you'll do fine.
the only thing u need to do is attending and concentrating
Brian is one of the best professors I have ever had. His powerpoints are integrated into his lectures FLAWLESSLY. They help so much. He makes a complicated class seem so much easier. His tests are bearable, if you study then you should have no problem. He is a flawless lecturer that keeps you interested and has a good sense of humor too.
Gonna go ahead and say one of the best professors I've ever had ... He's so interested in what he's teaching that it makes sense and his love for the subject keeps it interesting
Brian Is a lot of fun to have in class. The material can get boring sometimes, but if you go to class and pay attention somewhat, it should be pretty easy. Having the book was a waste though.
He's amazing. Plain and simple. His lectures make difficult concepts really easy to grasp. He also really makes class interesting and cares about how we do and if we're getting the concepts. If you just listen, take notes, and do the homework, you'll ace the tests. I definitely recommend taking this class!
Loved him! One of the best professors at KU. Very clear and compressible when teaching Intro to Econ. Gets the class involved even when teaching in a huge lecture hall. I recommend him to anyone needing to take an Econ course.
This guy is amazing. Best professor yet. His lectures are easy to understand and even though he is a 1000 person lecture hall it feels like you have no more than 20 other people in the room. He loves what he does and it shows. Get this professor if you can.
Great great teacher. One of the best I have had at KU. Makes the class fun and interesting. Way better than Neal Becker!
Great teacher. I had some interest in economics anyway, but he made even the boring stuff a little less boring. He definitely knows what he's talking about, and far more than he has to know for this class. He is fun, but still professional.
Amazing Professor! Brian does a great job making economics less boring and he has fun with the class. I went to office ours a few time to clarify a few concepts and he was extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend him and would take his class for 144 if he taught it!
Dr. Brian is teaches Economics 104 in a very interesting way which encourages the students to study and do good in Econ 104.
If you go to class, the information gets repeated three times fully before the tests. If you can listen, you can pass. Difficult content, but made very clear. Excellent prof, been meaning to drop in on his class just to hear the first 10 minutes of current events through the lens of economics.
Great teacher who is very nice and goes out of his way to make sure that his students do well. I would highly suggest him if you have the opportunity to take one of his classes.
AMAZING. WIsh I could have him every semester! I knew nothing about economics, and he made the pre-req my favorite class. He is amazing at explaining, gives fair tests, and is a truly kind person. Quite possibly the best teacher I have ever had. Highly recommend him!! Team Staihr!
Great teacher. You can tell that he's incredibly prepared for class. He's simply a pro. If you're good with theory, this class is at worst an easy b. Arguably best teacher I've ever had, dude knows his stuff.
I had no interest in economics and he made me excited to go class. He's an amazing teacher. Super nice too!
really good teacher... knows how to make you understand the material.... Best teacher i ever had...
I found this class really confusing and if economics isn't really your thing, you may have trouble with this. But prof. Staihr makes himself available to help when confused but sometimes that doesn't help either. if the first test doesnt go well it only gets harder, so id suggest you get a tutor if you feel overwhelmed.
Brian is an awesome professor. I took this course to fill a requirement for my BA. I am not an econ or accounting major. Every class was made interesting. Book is necessary for online assignments and complete understanding. Got an A in the class, only studied for a few hours the morning of the test! Brian, again, is awesome!!
At first, I didn't like Brian, but as the class went on, I realized how intelligent and awesome he really is. He gives tons of practice problems out & as long as you study for the tests, you will do well! He awesome & really has great "real world" experience in the field he's teaching about. He really knows his stuff! Take his class!
Good teacher, knows wgat he is talking about. He will get the class involved even in big lecture classes. You will not skate through the class but if you do all your homework and actually attend the lectures than you should be just fine. He is very good about extra help during office hours.
I was dreading taking this Intro to Econ class because I have no interest in it, but Dr. Staihr made it very clear and fun, even in a class of over 500. He was always engaging and hilarious, and knows exactly what he's talking about! Once he even gave everyone in the class money to buy coffee. So glad I took this class! He's the BEST teacher at KU.
Brian is quite possibly the best lecturer at KU. He is very intelligent and has tons of real life experience. You can tell he loves his job and does a great job of making himself available for extra help. Everything on the tests are stated in lecture. You only need to read parts of the book for clarity if you need it.
I am also currently in his ECON 144. Best teacher ever. He keeps it interesting. He tells you what you need to know and what you don't need to know. No surprises on tests. Take his class!
Awesome Guy
He is one of the best teachers I've had. His power points are awesome and goes perfect with his lecture. He is very clear on what's on the test and even gives you practice questions similar to the test questions. Take econ 142 with him!
Really great teacher. He truly cares about students well-being. He is more than willing to help you if you need it. He also makes class interesting and relatable to students
One of the greatest instructors I've ever had. Inspired me to change my major to economics
Best teacher I have had at KU so far and probably my favorite class as of now. Really enjoyed it. Dr Straihr is BRILLIANT, one of the smartest people I have ever met. Was lead economist for Sprint and worked with the Fed. Lots of outside experience that makes him more than qualified to teach! Plus his tests are right off the notes; go to class!!
Brian is a really nice guy and a great teacher. He really wants his students to do well on his class. He really loves diet coke and will pause for about 30 seconds each class so he can get a drink. Great guy, great class. I would recommend it.
Very easy class, BEST teacher I have ever had! Go to class, the notes will help you pass the class with no problem.
BEST TEACHER I have had.His teaching style is very funny and interesting, he let you feel interest of econ. DO NOT MISS CLASS!Attending is not mandatory, but his classes are AMAZING! Easy A, notes is enough for test but textbook may help for homework. It's a pity that he teach in a super professor level but his title is only a lecturer.
Greatest professor ever! He has active presentations, clear examples, and is very funny. I was shocked how interesting he made economics. The tests are off his notes. Go to class, take good notes, and do the practice problems. Those together ARE the tests.
Brian is a great professor! He makes his power points really engaging and interesting. He is very smart, funny, and knows what he is talking about, while making the information very clear. Highly recommend his class
Brian Staihr is a God amongst men. He is engaging, helpful, funny, a snappy dresser, intelligent, and overall a fantastic professor. Easily my favorite class last semester. He was able to make a class of around 300 feel like 30. Very helpful in-and-out of class, and is a huge reason why I decided to pursue economics.
VERY intelligent man, but understands that we are not all econ majors. Very clear in his explanations, class is not difficult if you put in the work.
I had him for Econ142 & 144. He's an awesome teacher. He is always willing to help if you go to his office hours. He is very straight forwarded with his material. He tells you exactly what will be on the exam & what to study for. He's very intelligent & knows what he's talking about. One of the best teachers I've had so far at KU.
Brian is probably the best teacher I've encountered so far at KU. His is the only class I will not miss unless I'm on my death bed. He's incredibly knowledgeable on the topic, and has so much outside experience. He makes class entertaining and makes economics interesting. The class has now, just sample problems. Loved it.
Brian is a great teacher and his lectures are never boring. However, as a journalism major who just needed to take an Econ course as a requirement, I regret taking econ 144 instead of the general econ 104 course. The material does not come easily to me and it definitely requires a lot of preparation and everyday attendance to do well on his tests.
Brian is definitely the best teacher I have had at KU so far. He knows what he is talking about and transfers his knowledge to his students clearly. He makes it obvious as to what will be on the tests, and although the tests can be somewhat tough at times, if you put in the work you'll do fine. I got an A- and I'm a Bio major
Brian was an amazing teacher! I had to take this for a general course and I absolutely hated econ before this class but he actually makes it interesting! He is extremely smart and explains things so well. I recommend this course to anyone who needs to fill a general class!
Dr. Staihr is easily one of my favorite professors at KU. He is funny, helpful, engaging, etc. etc. This class is not difficult if you keep up with the notes and pay attention in lecture. He expects a lot out of his students but gives you the confidence to do so. Although the subject is kind of boring, he made me want to attend class.
He was one of the best teachers I have had so far. Though his tests can be difficult, if you attend lecture, you should be fine. Most of his test information comes from lecture. Very cool guy, who knows his stuff!
Great guy. Had him for both macro and micro. Loved him for both. Have to go to class to get material. Tests are what is mentioned in class. Textbook is not mandatory for tests, but for online homework, its a good reference. Homework is 25% of grade, easy points. Another easy 15% is going to discussion. Overall, best teacher I have ever had.
one of the best teachers i've ever had period. very nice and smart. not easy class but he does everything to help you
One of the best professors I have had!! He knows what he is talking about and he is always ready for class with power points and occasionally will have practice problems for students to do before tests. This is a hard class and he can make the test confusing sometimes but if you take good notes you should have no problem! Great Professor!
He is one of the best teachers I've had at KU! So credible, and his test questions encompass all of the material so you are really applying what you know. If you are an A/B student, expect to get A's and B's on the tests and you'll do great in the class.
fantastic
Dr. Stahir is a very good lecturer--probably one of the best I've had at KU. He knows his stuff, and he explains it in a very clear way. He is very helpful and seems to care about his students. The tests are not hard if you go to class and take notes--he doesn't put anything on the tests that wasn't mentioned in lecture. Highly recommended.
I didn't have a great TA for this class, would've been helpful to have a proper review before an exam. He goes through his power points really fast and usually tells you to just write the page number down and go back to the textbook. I just took pictures of the slides during lecture, then wrote the notes later. The exam covers everything in lecture
Great to have a small class with Staihr. He's great in the large lecture setting, but even better here. Grade determined by 6 exams and participation points (essentially, just show up each period, which you will, because he's Brian Staihr). He knows what you need to know to succeed with economics, plain and simple.
great professor! make sure you take notes and study them
One of the best teachers I've had. He is very clear and makes what could be a boring subject interesting. The tests are still challenging.
he is not helpful and his grades are straight. he doesn't give a curve. his online quizzes and homework are not clear. I don't recommend him as a professor.
If math isn't your best subject do not take this class. Take it somewhere else and transfer the credit. Most TAs were very little help with unclear English, Brian has a lot of students so office hours are cramped. Econ is rough, and he tries to challenge you. It just depends on how you look at it. Regardless the man is a genius.
EXCELLENT TEACHER! He's a genius when it comes to economics and he really relates well to the students he's teaching. Get him for macro and micro if you can!
Overall a good instructor. He is clear in class, makes lectures interesting, and obviously knows the material. However, his ego is much larger than his qualifications, and he can be incredibly rude to students. Also, previous comments about bad TAs and language barriers are spot on. I enjoyed the class overall, but don't have much respect for him.
AN AMAZING TEACHER! He explains everything to where you can completely understand whats going on. Really don't even need to use the book because he teaches so well. Great energy. Charismatic. Cares about everyone. Just great teacher and has a great personality. Two thumbs up.
Turned a class I was going to hate to a class I didn't mind going to. Very interactive lectures and he does all he can to help you do well, provided you put in the effort.
A great teacher, explains the material well. Tests are a little tricky.
This is a tough review to give. Brian Staihr is very knowledgeable and you will learn a great deal about economics but here is the issue....He is one of the MOST arrogant and moody Professors ever! Can snap on you in an instant. Very difficult class/test. Hard to keep up with material. Moves super fast and no online slides. One of the harder people
Lecture is interesting and understandable. He will tell you exactly what he plans on including in exams, which is nice, and he provides sample question sheets after every lecture that help. He's funny, and blunt, which should not be taken personally. Knows what he's talking about. Get him!
Staihr is by far one of the best instructors I've had at KU. His lectures are interesting, informative as well as engaging. The tests arent to bad. Plus the final isnt a cummulative final. I would definitely recommend him.
He is one of the best teachers I've had at KU. The class, for me at least, was somewhat difficult. He does sometimes go fast but I could listen to him teach all day, he's that good.
Very helpful graphs, go to class and you'll do well. If you go to class you probably don't even need the book. Just do his practice problems and pay attention. He's a great, engaging professor and I will definitely take him again for Macro.
Staihr is the man. He will work with you and is a really good guy to get to know, you just have to have the guts to go talk to him in his office. Really nice guy who really knows his stuff. However he expects you to work hard to know your stuff and if you don't he won't have much sympathy for you. The TA's had a bit of a language barrier though.
He is a great professor. Explains things really well and lectures are enjoyable. Comes off very arrogant but he really knows his stuff. Quizzes and Test are difficult but passable if you really put time and effort into learning the material. Don't ask the wrong question because he will snap at you. TA useless soft spoken and barely spoke English
Professor Staihr is an excellent lecturer. He explains things very well, although he moves way to quickly many times. His tests are passable, but they are quite tough. He always tries to trick you on them and makes sure you REALLY know the material. Also theres 10 quizzes that can get tough. Study hard and youll be fine. Great guy though!!
He is a very good professor and I would definitely suggest taking his classes. As long as you pay attention in class, take good notes, and do the practice problems, its an easy A. He covers in class every thing that is on his tests and will even often tell you what specifically will be on tests
Probably the best at KU as far as large lecture classes go. Lectures are very organized, and he moves efficiently through the slides. Tests are 30 MC questions, and cover EVERYTHING from the lectures. I went to class every day and thought the tests were somewhat easy, but they are very comprehensive.
Staihr is a really good professor. He's one of the best I've had at KU. He makes economics interesting and engaging. You definitely have to go to class, as he covers some things that are not in the book. As long as you take notes and study them before the exams you may not even need to use the book.
He is a great professor but his test use very tricky language.
Brian is a wonderful guy and an engaging professor but he expects more from his students than an introductory level should. Hopefully in the future he can cut some information out and also not make the final cumulative. Just study hard for tests and make sure you're at every lecture and you should be okay for a least a B.
Staihr is the most interesting professor I've had at KU, especially for teaching in Budig 120. He knows a lot about economics and keeps everything relevant. Honestly, he's the best. His class is not an easy A but if you go to his class and take notes and care enough it would be attainable. I got a B because I didn't study for his final at all.
I definitely recommend Brian for anyone who has to take 142 and 144! He is very clear about what will be on his tests and he gives a lot of practice problems that are super helpful. The biggest thing is you really need to be at EVERY lecture and take good notes. If you put in the work i don't see how you couldn't get at least a B.
Dr. Staihr is a great professor and really knows his material. He teaches well and the class isn't hard. Just be ware of his tests, he gives lots of trick questions.
He is so mean when you ask for help in office hours, he doesn't put notes up online to make you go to class and he goes way too fast to even get it all down. the tests are hard even if you study, tons of trick questions. unless you enjoy math and boring stuff about demand and supply curves, don't take this class. I am an A student and have a D.
I found the material in the class to be challenging. Although I had never taken an Econ course before. He is a good teacher and knows his stuff, but his tests can be difficult and there are tricky questions
Not an easy class by an means. However, Staihr is an excellent lecturer and makes difficult concepts much easier to grasp. His TA's are miserable on the other hand, and I found myself feeling less prepared after leaving the discussion sessions. Do the sample questions, study, and you should do fine.
Makes difficult subjects easy to understand. He doesn't post his notes online, but he tells you exactly how to study and what will be on the test. He adds information applicable to the course to make it interesting. Very knowledgable and credible guy. His tests can be tricky - just be careful on what he asks. Highly recommend him
Easily the best professor at Ku hands down. He turned me from a finance major to an econ major. You need to pay attention in class, take decent notes, and know how to work the sample problems he gives you. Talk to him after class and during office hours. He is a genuine guy who wants to see you succeed. 10/10
Not a bad teacher, but you have to go to class if you want to learn anything. His tests are difficult, and he does not put notes online.
As a senior, I will say that he is the best teacher at KU. A+ for clarity and presentation of the material. You will not find a better lecturer, which makes learning the material much easier. He turns one of the most complex subjects (economics) into a clear, understandable, and interesting lecture. Going to class is a must.
GO TO OFFICE HOURS. This could change your entire experience of the class. He REALLY wants you to understand the material so if you don't care about your success as much as he does, then you deserve that C.
Brian Staihr is so awesome! I'm a C student and I will get an A or B in this class. Theres 5 tests including final and discussion grade points. No other grade. Must go everyday or you will fall way behind. Doesnt post PP but lets you come into his office and copy down. He is the most helpful person I met. Go to his office hours and he wil help you
He is a VERY good teacher and knows what he's talking about. LOTS of materialconcepts to learn. He gives study questions on material after each lecture which, put together, are basically his tests. Tests are hard if you don't study well, but overall a very interesting class. Discussions are POINTLESS though. Overall, hard class & keep up on text.
Brian is a great person and professor. Extremely interesting to talk to, definitely has had experience in his life and is very obviously teaching because it is what he wants to do. He works hard so he is rarely in the office but he is always willing to help when he has office hours. Other points of interest: No homework!
Dr. Staihr is a great professor. Makes economics simple and clear. Tests, while numbering only 5 a year, are difficult if you haven't paid attention or read the material. Notes are not posted online so attendance is important.
This guy is great. My favorite class of all time and the only one I actually look forward to going to. He makes the topic so interesting and he uses tons of real life examples to apply the topics to.
Tests are very hard; he expects you to do too much in the amount of time you have.
The best professor I've had at KU hands down. This was the one class that i actually looked forward to attending. He made the material interesting and was very clear. he gives you sample test questions every class period. you must attend class. tests are very hard. you have to study. the discussion teachers are mostly foreign and hard to understand
Brian is a humorous professor who makes the time in class enjoyable. Subject is relevant to everyday life and interesting at times due to the way he presents it. You have to write notes very quickly and pay attention in class. A little difficult, but very worth it.
Professor Staihr knows Economics, and he's great at explaining it too. His lectures are very clear and entertaining, although very difficult. You'll have to pay attention and write fast for notes. The material is interesting and applicable to daily life.
You have to go to all the lectures to do well in the class. His tests are difficult if you do not know the material front, right, back and left. Discussions do help and there are plenty of TA's too that are more than willing to help. You'll get the grade you earn. No extra credit but also no homework.
He is great explaining the course material. Tests are hard but he gives you sample questions each class, definitely take each and practice on it. Besides that, be fast on taking notes and try to get everything he covers.
Either you love or hate Brian Staihr's Econ classes. Unfortunately I was the latter of the two. He never posts any of his slides to Blackboard so be prepared to take notes (I suggest bringing a computer & not skipping). If you don't know the material like the back of your hand, good luck on the test. Read the book; it helps tie the lecture together
Brian Staihr is an amazing professor, probably the best I've had at KU so far. He covers a lot of material and all of it is pertinent. The only things that are graded in the class are the exams, so make sure you study a lot of all of them. And they are usually though. Great class, would recommend everyone to take it with him in particular.
Staihr is the man. His teaching styles work with every student in the classroom. If you need help, he will do everything in his power to make sure you understand the material. Great mentor and great professor. His experience speaks for itself. If you have the chance to take a class with him, do it!
Staihr is the best teacher I've ever had. He shows up excited to teach and taught me so much. His tests were super tricky and challenging but overall I loved the class.
Best professor at KU, bar none. Explains economic concepts very well. Sets forth his expectations from the beginning. And if something isn't clear, he has a ton of office hours. Take his classes. Little tip, his tests are his practice questions.
Extremely difficult but extremely interesting. There's no homework or attendance, but if you miss class you'll most likely be completely lost. All of his lectures are important, meaning if you space out for five minutes you'll be lost. His tests are hard, but after you figure out how to take them they get easier. Really good professor, very funny.
Really great lecturer. His tests are tricky, but the lectures are very engaging and clear. Don't skip class, mostly because his lectures are too cool, but also b/c he likes to include stuff on tests that isn't in the book. Highly recommend his class, it's obvious he really enjoys teaching this stuff.
This class is SUPER hard but Staihr makes it bearable. He presents the information in a really interesting way but definitely makes you work for your A. The only points in the class are test grades and discussion participation, so there is no room for error. Study a lot and read the textbook and you have a shot at getting a good grade.
4 tests worth 16%, discussion worth 16%, final worth 20%. This class is easy if you spend the time reading the book, going over the sample questions he gives you, and attending lecture. I don't know how some people didn't get at least a B in the class considering it was the easiest class I've taken. Very straight forward concepts.
I am an economics major so it was easy for me to understand the information. However, for those who aren't, like business majors, you must go to every single class and take extensive notes. Before every test I would make note cards over every important term and I got A's on all of them. Also make sure to go and participate in every discussion.
Lectures are doable, he's a funny guy in class and is one of the best lecturer I've had. Although, beware when going to his office hours, he isn't the kindest professor and can be very arrogant and rude to you. Tests are hard but not if you study/ pay attention in class. Don't skip or you will be lost.
Brian is great! His lectures are absolutely filled with info, but he cracks jokes here and there to make it not so heavy. This class and the lectures move quite fast. I had to go from writing to typing notes just to keep up. If you do the sample questions, and do them again and make notecards, you should be alright.
You know when teachers say, "I don't make test to trick you." Brian Staihr does. Otherwise, his lectures are a treat to listen to. He is passionate, crude-humored, and extremely intelligent. You will work your brain, but it will be worth it. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Wonderful professor, extremely entertaining. Intimidating at first but it's now one of my favorite lectures to go to. Tests are very difficult. Attendance is not mandatory but you'll miss out on so much if you skip.
The best professor I have had
He is an intelligent guy but I still believe he is the worst teacher I have every had at KU. He expects us to spend too much time studying otherwise we wouldn't pass or we'll at least get a grade of C. I am taking Engineering Classes this semester. I prepared for Econ 142 much more than I prepared for the engineering classes I am taking. Crazy!!!!!
His tests can be tricky without good studying. He makes the material and lectures very very easy to understand and exciting. One of, if not the best Econ professors on campus. Definitely a class where you need to work some for the grade but actually feel like you learned a lot and enjoyed the class, even though its Econ. Take this class.
Staihr is an awesome professor. He tries to make the material as easy as possible to understand in a big lecture. You really have to work for an A though because its really easy to lose points on tests. The discussion is just participation points but if you understand the lecture then showing up is useless besides the participation points.
Discussions are nearly useless, the only reason I went is because it's 16% of the grade. Brian gives great lectures, but sometimes it's hard to go back and think about the steps he went through to get to a conclusion. Incredibly engaging. Never opened the textbook.
Staihr is everything you could want from a lecturer. His lectures are engaging, concise, and relevant, even for someone like myself who isn't interested in economics. Fair warning, you do need to go to class and actually listen to do well. That said, if you understand basic algebra and go to recitations, you'll get an A. Four exams plus a final
Brian Staihr is hands down the greatest professor I have ever had. While Econ can definitely be brutal, he tries to make it as simple as possible. If you pay attention and do practice problems, you will do well. If you are confused, he has multiple office hours you can take advantage of. He is the best.
I usually hate taking lecture heavy classes but Brian makes his lectures engaging and entertaining. All of the learning in the class is done via lecture and sample problems so try not to skip, but if you do make sure you get the notes! If you are struggling with anything there are plenty of resources to help, and he's always available.
Dr. Staihr was a great teacher! The grade depends ENTIRELY on 4 exams, discussion participation, and the final. You need to go to every class, pay attention, and do the sample problems. Read the chapters to follow along in class and then to help study. He keeps the lectures fun and entertaining.
His lectures are hilarious and NEVER a waste of time because he fills it all with important material. He hands out practice questions that seriously saved me on the tests, but they are not required or for points. This man knows so much that it would be a waste NOT to take one of his classes. He's really approachable at office hours all the time.
He is a great lecturer. He has very good slides and you can tell he comes prepared. He even has hand-outs at the end of the class that help students narrow in on what to study.
Dr. Staihr is one of the best lecturers I've encountered at KU. He makes learning economics engaging and quite simple. Although the tests can be tricky, studying well and doing his practice problems will help you succeed. His classes aren't too math heavy and emphasize conceptual understanding. Dr. Staihr has inspired me to take up a minor in econ.
Brian Staihr is the best lecturer I have encountered at any of the schools that I have attended. He makes the material easy to understand and makes a subject as sometimes dry as economics entertaining. If you want a professor that will give you valuable knowledge, hassle free education, honesty, and the desire to learn, take one of Staihr's classes
Definitely the best professor I have had. Brian can explain complicated things extremely clearly. He definitely comes to lecture prepared, and is always willing to help a student outside of class if needed.
Brian Staihr in my personal opinion is one of if not the best professor on KU's campus. His passion for teaching is unparalleled. Even if you don't do well in his class you still find yourself saying I should be an Econ major to the point where you could call it the Staihr effect which speaks volumes to his teaching ability and drive.
Tests: Moderately easy if you study for a day or two. got 2 90%, never happens for me. 78% on final Lectures: Amazing. Made micro really interesting TAs: mine was average, cared about wanting me to succeed Go to discussion. if you go to every one 100% on a sixth test. (Five tests total) Tests and discussion-only things in Blackboard
Take a class from this man. Brian covers a lot of ground and his tests are tricky, but if you take good notes and study hard you'll be fine. He is one of the best professors I've had in my 4 years at KU, which is incredible because he teaches in front of gigantic lecture halls. He's very funny and engaging and you'll probably look forward to class.
Very good man. No online content. Recommend getting the book even though you don't technically need it. There are five tests and the final is only worth a bit more than any of the tests (150 points instead of 120 points). Attendance to discussion counts for 120 points. I didn't like the course content at all but Staihr himself is great.
Brian is an amazing teacher. His lectures are interesting and engaging. I enrolled in the class knowing nothing about economics. ECON 142 ended up being one of my favorite classes. Go to all lectures and discussions, take good notes, and do the sample questions. As long as you put effort into learning the material, you wil get a good grade.
He's funny and charming, but he makes class MUCH harder than it needs to be. Grading is based entirely on tests and they are HARD. This is a 100-level class but feels a lot closer to a 300-level. I bombed the first test and then did very well on all the rest and ended with a B. I would take this class online at JCCC if I could do it over again.
Staihr is a gifted lecturer. He gives lots of resources to students, including sample test questions, plentiful office hours/Supplemental Instruction. USE THEM! READ THE BOOK! The class is NOT an easy A, and the tests are meant to really test your understanding (lots of tricky questions). But you learn a lot about an important topic. Take ECON144!
I LOVE THIS MAN. He provides the best and most informative lectures I have ever sat through. Not only does he know his stuff, but he makes the material fun and easy to learn/grasp. His notes are not online, so you can only get them from his lectures. 5 exams total, no homework. His lectures prepare you for exactly what his exams are.
VERY good lecturer, love him. Have to go to class to understand, I also had to go to office hours a lot to have things re clarified. If provided, I would recommend going to the SI sessions, they helped SO MUCH. Tests are hard, he makes sure you actually know the concepts, not just memorization. Personally didn't use the text book.
Great professor, especially if Economics isn't your specialty. If you go to class and do the sample problems, you'll be fine
Keeps his lectures very interesting, I'll be tempted to show up to one of his future lectures in a class I don't take just to listen to him. 84% of my grade was from tests, so good luck getting an A. Hope for a good TA who makes review guides. He refers to the book, but posts slides online so buying the book was a waste of money. Great guy.
This class was super hard but I loved it. Class attendance isn't mandatory, but it's extremely helpful since some of the test questions aren't in the book or slideshows, only talked about in lecture. Brian made me never want to skip this class. Study hard for the tests because that's all you're graded on and they're tough.
One of the best lecturers I've ever had. Not once was there a day where I didn't look forward to learning about Macroeconomics. Has a great reputation around KU.
Staihr is a great lecturer and is able to keep students engaged. I refused to buy the book for either class, which I wouldn't recommend. W/o book, you should be able to get at least an 80% on the test, but the remaining 20% is random stuff that you could easily remember if you read it before. Be prepared to study, tests come quicker than expected.
Professor Staihr's class was easily the class that I've learned the most in so far. You can tell he really cares about his students learning the material and his lectures are interesting. 6 tests was a bit extreme, and you are not graded on basically anything else so study hard! You have to work hard for an A or B.
Brian is very passionate about his job, to the point that he continued class while he was having a heart attack without anyone knowing about it. He really wants his students to learn. The downside to his class is that there is a lot of material to cover and there are 6 exams. His ppt slides are kind of messy so you won't get it if you miss class.
Easily my favorite professor on campus. He makes his lectures very straightforward and entertaining. The guy wants you to succeed and will give you all the tools you need in order to do so. The class is tough, but very fair. It is no where near as difficult as a math class. If you put in any effort and look at the notes and practice problems, EZ.
Extremely captivating lecturer, and he is filled with energy. I had no problem sitting through any of the lectures, and I often enjoyed them.
He is basically one of the best and the most helpful that I have ever had in KU. Typically, I do not like to stay a little bit after the class to talk to the professor; but he always give a new insight of issues happening around the world (that is related to the topic of the class). You won't ever fall asleep during his lecture!
Brian Staihr is one of the most amazing professors I have had at my time at KU. A few of my friends even changed their major to economics because of his class. He is so funny and genuinely LOVES what he does so it's always interesting. If you have the slightest interest in economics, take him. He'll make you love it
Definitely my favorite professor at KU so far - in fact, I changed my major to economics after taking his 144 class. Extremely interesting, engaging lecturer. Attendance isn't mandatory, but showing up and taking good notes is important as his exams are fairly challenging. Wish I could have him for all my ECON classes, highly recommended.
Staihr is a great professor. I am seriously considering changing my major after receiving an A in his class. His class is hard, and he makes it that way because he wants you to learn. The content is challenging, and so are the tests. That being said, if you study hard and not just memorize the material but understand it - you will be just fine.
He's an intelligent man, and he's highly respected at KU. However, you will work harder than I think necessary for a 100-level course. I'd recommend avoiding him if you care about your GPA. If you want to actually learn valuable info, take a course with him. His tests are excessively hard, but he wants to push you to study.
One of the greatest professors on campus. Love the guy. He's very test heavy, but you will learn. And he deeply cares for his students. He makes you work for your grade too. Tests are hard, but there are no tricks. If you study, and pick up on his cues during class, you'll do fine.
Great example of a professor that challenges you in a meaningful, constructive, way. This class was my hardest of the semester but I learned more from it than any other. He places an emphasis on "figure sense", using/interpreting the math behind the econ principles. Beware exams, no partial credit is awarded for missed problems.
Brian truly cares about his students. He learns your name before you step foot into the first class session. He was the only instructor I had that made an effort not to read off slides during the mandatory transition to online coursework. He went on campus and continued to film himself in front of a green screen with the slides in the background.
Typically, my favorite professors are the ones who are nice and easy and don't make you try hard.. but Staihr is totally different. Incredible teacher who bring the best out of his students. It has been two years since I had him and I still look back at how much I came away with in the class. Glad I had him to push me so hard early on in college.
Professor Staihr was one of my favorite professors this semester. He truly cares about his students and really makes sure his students understand the material. It's crucial to watch each lecture to pass the exam. But because of online learning, Prof. Staihr went in each week to individually record lectures. Seriously one of the best professors.
Truly one of the best professors I have had. He knew all of our names before the first day of class and handled the transition to online classes well. His in-person lectures were engaging and you always knew he cared about you as an individual.
For this being an all online class, it was set up really nicely. You have to watch the lecture videos to get the information but they are easy to watch and take notes on. The class is graded on a small number of things, which is the one downfall. The examples he gives the class are close to the same as the problems on the test.
Brian is a true gem. His lectures are so good that as long as you understand them, you will ace everything. I barely even study for the class and I have aced every test thanks to his lecture videos.
It is an easy online class. Do the reviews and you can ace all tests. The homework is easy, you can get 100% on all of them. The tests are easy and identical to the reviews. BUT the professor uploads the most painful lecture videos. A video that could be 10-15 minutes, he makes it an hour. He needlessly spends 20 minutes reviewing the last video
Truly a gifted lecturer. Explained difficult concepts seamlessly and was super engaging. You can tell he really knows his stuff. Took the class online but wish I would've gotten to experience it in person because he seems like a genuinely cool professor/person.
Brian is a really good lecturer and relating a lot of the material to real-life events. I thought the lectures were fast-paced so practice a lot of the examples/exercises from class at home. Connect HW points were easy. Exams are MC and short answer. He gives a lot of optional exercises you could do at home to practice for the exams.
Brian Staihr is a nice guy, BUT, a pretty bad teacher. I would highly suggest you do NOT take this class in person. For in-person class if you missed one day, you were screwed for the test, he would ask questions like, "We discussed this in class...", I had a 4.0 GPA in high school and college and just received my first C. Worst professor I've had.
Great teacher. Posts all the lecture slides and sample tests on canvas. The textbook does a poor job of covering the problems so you have to show up to class. Tests aren't open note, so make sure to type the formulas into your calculator using the PRGM button.
He's the best. Lecture videos and taking notes are important if you're taking it online. Homework is free points. Take the class online if you can. Never met him in person but can tell he's the nicest guy ever. Wants you to succeed, and always has great energy.
Professor Brian is a gifted lecturer who makes difficult concepts easy to understand. His lectures and slides are invaluable - just make sure to stay engaged. unstuck study was a lifesaver for exam prep.
Glad I took this class online. You are required to buy the textbook, it is helpful for studying but pricey. Unlimited tries on homework. I found the material difficult to understand, but make sure you watch the videos and do the sample problems before exams. Exam is based off the sample problems, and questions reference the videos. Nice guy!
