He's awesome.
He is reallyyyyy good!! Good at explaining and very lively in class. He makes use of a lot of gestures, making the class more fun and lively! He is very helpful too... bloody awesome!! A must take!!
Good lecturer, but tests are hard and finals are impossible. I dropped his class and took perino for 1A and she was helpful and makes things look easy unlike Stanely.
His lecture was very clear, but make sure that you are girl before you take his class; then you will have more fun
Pros: Funny with a lot of jokes in class. Cons: Put special interest on pretty girls. His explainations are ok BUT not as good as Strand although his exam system similar to Strand.
Stanley is really a good teacher. He's good at explaining and always jokes in class. But be carefull if you are a male and you are smart, he will kind of sentiment with you. But if you are a girl n you are pretty, he's gonna be very helpfull and very nice
they should add an option under Status : should not be teaching . he is a good teacher, and his skill is the only reason he is still there. a prerequisite for taking his class is being female. he's very unhelpful to guys, esp. out of the classroom.
He's a really good teacher. He has great skills, and the lecture is very clear. Easy to understand. However, his grading policy is strict. By the way, you need to be a girl to take his class. hehe...

Wow he is terrible. He is a good teacher but the tests are nothing like class. Don't take this guy his tests are actually impossible. Worst math teacher I have ever had, take strand instead.
He is a very good teacher! His lectures are very clear and his tests were fun to take... You have to be sure to study for his class though, it is not an easy ride.
Excellent, very straight-forward, clear lessons. The British accent doesn't hurt either.
Avoid this guy! Terrible grading and exams!
This is my second time taking this class. What a difference having a great teacher makes. His exams are fair (disagree with previous reviewer) if you do the homework and come to class. If you are a flake don't take his class - you won't do well.
EXCELLENT TEACHER!!! The best math teacher at Foothill. He is so helpful and sweet you would be crazy not to take him. I got a better grade in his class than in math 1A.
Great teacher. He makes it clear exactly what's expected and how to succeed in his class. If you are showing that you're interested and are putting the effort in he will do whatever he can to help you do well. Otherwise yes, you're on your own.
British - likes to get to know students. Can be moody. Get on his good side or else...
Absolutely the most helpful teacher I have had in any subject. You'll do better if you are interested in math (note I said 'interested' - not brilliant) and come to class regularly. He's not bvery tolerant of flakiness or rudness. But that's fine with me.
He is a very helpful teacher. You will learn and understand many things in his class because he explains everything in detail. He is a excellent teacher.

I love Stanley. He's such an amazing teacher and he really cares about his students. He made learning about integrals more interesting than it really is.
!!!!!
He is such a good teacher. he explains the materials very clear. I begin to love math after taking his class. remember to do homework, then it's not hard to get A. He is the best math instructor in foothill
He's awesome!!
He's hella hot which helps if you want to pay attention. If you study you will get an A. If you get an A on the final you get an A in the class. HE really enjoys helping his students

He is a great instructor. He helps a lot and teaches very well. He uses lively teaching method and his grading system is good. 10% participation and 10% egrade is for sure. 20% on quizzes dropped lowest two, 20% on midterm, 40% on MC Final
He is a good teacher, but his grading policy is not good at all. Everything is based on HIS EXTREMELY HARD FINAL EXAM. can be moody also. I
Worst grader. You are at sleep untill the final.Every thing depends that how you do on final exam.
Pretty helpful as an all-the-time gentleman. Highly understandable to his detailed explanations of the brief-and-hard mathematical theories. He's much more focused on theories rather than practical math. problems. Final is not easy.
Hmm - the review below is odd. I found him to be very practical - has an engineering background and brings the real-world into the classroom like no other teacher I have ever had. "Flakes" and "lazies" should take another teacher.
Sucks! Final exam, his most stupid exam ever, is all that counts, even if you do such a good job in the class. A multiple choice exam! For God's sake! This is a Math class. Solving more than 40 problems in 2 hrs. Still wanna take it with him, be my guest.
Hmm . . the guy below probably didn't study much :-). The final exam was a lot like the practice version he gave out before the exam. Not easy–but definitely fair. He'll do anything to help you– if you want to work.
I wouldn't recommand him. He makes sarcastic remarks about students that are very discouraging. His final, 40+ problems which are suppose to be multiple choice but they are not. He has no idea what a multiple choice exam means.
He is a really good teacher, but he is very hard. I took 1B in the summer quarter and barely passed. He is willing to help you on anything. Very nice, and funny. Entertaining classes. What was said earlier about final is true, it's very hard...
Nice teacher - very helpful. Students told me it was hard but I don't find it that way. I think they were looking for an easy time. He just expects you to be serious about the stuff. The class was the most interesting math class I took - ever ! He does not take too well to the lazy students though.
Just finished 1A with him. Final was not hard if you studied. Got 10% of my grade just for showing up on time for class! Better not be late or you lose that. Great examples from real world - entertaining and funny. Tough about showing work in quizes and midterms (except on final which is MC).
Fantastic teacher, very clear, friendly and helpful. Class was always fun and involved. The downfall is that nearly 40% of your entire grade is based on the final, which is extraordinarily difficult. I went in with over 95% and got out with a C simply because of the final. I would not take him again
GOOD TEACHER, BUT NOT RECOMMENDED BECAUSE OF HIS EXTREMELY HARD FINAL.45 MULTIPLE CHOICE PROBLEMS WHICH ARE REALLY HARD.

His lectures are pretty good and he holds your interest fairly well. But the final is crazy hard and counts for a ton of points. Look for another teacher if you want a decent grade.

Come on guys, stop complaining. He is good, you have to admit that. Regarding the level of difficulty for his finals, I just have to tell you guys to appreciate his do-able finals because if you think his finals are crazy, you might want to re-think about transferring to REAL 4-year universities
What they didn't tell you below is that he spends a lot of time preparing you for the MC final. If you go to class and listen hard you can't go wrong. The final has to be a bit hard cos he gives you that as your course grade if it's better.
Yep.. He's giving you the offer of getting an A in the course if you get an A in the final (even if you're getting D's and F's so far). And that's a REALLY good deal, nobody else has this policy. So of course he is not going to make the final easy, BUT it is certainly doable, as someone said earlier
He is really good! Take his class, trust me!
The final is horrible, and he does a bad job of preparing students for that. Very unclear. He is also very picky, and prefers only certain students that he likes. Has his own stereotypes, and tho he seems like a white rabbit, he is the devil himself =) nah, i just don't like him and his class.. glhf
very pk...not enough time to teach in class and ask students to do the work on their own...-.-
Stanley is very clear in his teaching. very fun teacher! his class is fun. he likes to joke. yes, he is picky. highly recommended to take his class. midterm is easy but final is quite hard.
Good as a teacher, but hard as a grader. He is extremely helpful and has a good sense of humor. However, his final exams are really hard. Most students do badly and have their grades at least two or three notches lower than the grades before final.
This is the worst class I have ever taken! Brian Stanley can't bring himself down to the algebra level (he teaches calculus and reminds you every day). He makes students feel stupid by asking the class "who DOSENT understand this?" He plays favorites and insults Americans. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
Mr. Stanley is friendly and always willing to help. Class is really interesting, even though the subject is quite hard and boring. If you study for the final and attend the review sessions, you will do fine (in the class) despite the final being quite hard.
This is my second time taking 105. Finally found Mr. Stanley who teaches me how to understand what I am doing. I got tired of just being told "this is the way it is". Someone told me to take him. He makes the hard stuff in algebra even "fun". believe it or not. NOW I understand absolute value!!
Mr. Stanley is great. He suggested I have an LD (learning disability) and they checked me out. Now I see why I have been having problems all of these years. Very kind and sympathetic, and extremely senstitive to your needs.
He doesn't understand calculus at all!!!!!!!
Mr. Stanley is the best math teacher I have ever had and I have had a lot! He makes it relevant and helps you see that math is all around you. Awesome to the power n !
He's claculus class is at algebra level. He always thinks that he's cleverer than the book, but actually, he's "methods" are silly. If you have to take clculus class, he's the last choice. However, if you want to take algebra level class, he might be your first choice because he seems only can understand algebra.
Awsome teacher! Very clear and straight-forward. If you pass the final you pass the class no matter what.
Stanley was alright. The class wasn't too difficult so long as you remain on top of the homework. The final was really hard, but it was multiple choice. He has clear favorites in class, and it's uncomfortable to not be one of them. More like you don't feel like you're part of the class. But he was a good teacher.
great prof !
Obviously the material is hard for non-science major students. Basing on this, Stanley does a really good job on his grading system. His teaching is good(thanks for the lecture notes), and he's usually friendly too. No matter what, he has taught calculus for years; u cant expect flexibility and "begging grade" from him.

good teacher, but not fair. Very moody.
This teacher was horrible. His grading was completely unfair(any part of the answer being wrong=entire answer being wrong) and his solution was to tell me to "Stop taking tests, it is hurting your grade." Math 101 I got an A, and I took the class over in the summer quarter and got a B. I barely had a D in his class.
He provides a "survival guide" which is VERY handy. In truth I didn't even have to open the textbook as long as I went to class, because the notes are all right there. His tests are easy to the point of hilarity, with the grave exception of his final. I went into the the final with a 98%, came out with barely a B.

Stanley is great. He explains things clearly and has superb, well-organized lectures. He uses the same lecture notes as Knobel, which really indicates how important teaching skills are because Knobel, with the same material, is an absolute train wreck.
Great teacher.
u can only learn a little from his lecture. He just goes through the notes and teaches basic concept, and his time management is bad....take him if you know math or willing to learn on your own. one good thing is that his final exam can cover everything and become the final grade....
math 1a and 1b is a difficult class and he doesnt make it easier. the survival guide helps but you need to do a ton to understand it. gives a lot of quizes and u can do well if u do the homework. the mid and final is hard as hell!!! although if u do well in the final, the quizes and mid doesnt count. work extra hard for the final!!!
Stanley is very student focused. He shows concern and makes himself available for students if they need help.
Excellent teacher; come to class prepared every day and you will do well; 1B is easier than 1A
It's a tough class and you'll have to work for the grade, BUT he's a great teacher! He's always trying to help his students. He's always cheerful and ready for class. His lectures are clear and organized. Highly recommended!
He likes girls very much~ He will give A to all the girls~ So, if you are a girl, I recommond you to take his course~ If you are a boy, then you need to be very smart, otherwise you are so hard to get A from him
Without a doubt the BEST math teacher I have ever had. Too bad he's not teaching 1C in Winter. I am going to wait until Spring. The Survival Guides are a great way to get the main information for the course. If you need his help he'll make himself available for you. The tests are not trivial but they are fair. Just do the homework and come to class
very very very hard. dont take his class, drop it!!
he is sooo great..the way he teach is clear n eassy to undestand..he always compear his self with us when he was a college student. it help lot to undestand..not eassy to get A but if you do the homeworks you can!!come to class every day.his notes are soo eassy to follow..and don't come to class when you are late..the best teacher i ever had
The first class I got failed.
not my favorite teacher.he's particularly irritating when it comes to participating in class.love to compare his a section class with b section class. -_-' His way of teaching is pretty good though. One thing i hate about his class is that there's no break..u just have to sit there for almost 2 hours with no break and forced to participate
His class is ****ing easy!!! >.<
This teacher is great. He explains very clearly about each and every thing. He is also available too. I would recommend this teacher.
he is hard!!! especially his final!!!!i guess if u study hard and do a lot of work u'll do fine, otherwise it's impossible to pass. but he does care about his students and he is pretty good at explaining...
He really cares about his students' success. His published lecture notes, the "Survival Guide", is so helpful it can easily replace the textbook. He always makes his expectations clear, and can explain complex concepts from many different angles. Highly recommended, if you want a rewarding learning experience with a dedicated instructor.
You'll love him!In my life i have never met a great teacher like this..although his exams are not eassy...if you study hard n listen every word he says in class you can get a A!!i'm hoping to see him 1C class too...:D
I waited for MATH 1C having taken 1A and 1B a year ago. It was worth it ! The class notes are awesome ! If you want to learn – take him. His strategies lecture on MC tests is the greatest prep for a test I have ever had. There are only two legendary "S" teachers left (Seelbach has gone already). Take stanley if you can! Waiting for 1D now.
I don't recommend this teacher. I took this course in my home country and had to retake it at Foothill because my "foreign" transcripts aren't accepted here. I have gone far beyond this level in math. A lot of irrelevant material, does not include important types of problems you will see later. True/false on math tests should not be allowed.
I took Mr. Stanley's class years ago, and still remember what an impression he made on me. He is helpful, explains concepts well, and makes calculus an enjoyable way to spend the hour. And he's pretty funny, too. :)
he is english, i love his accent! anywaz, he is a great teacher, i never laugh so much in a math class, but he is really good in terms of making us comfortable in a math class. do ur HW and and practice exam, and u will be just fine to getting a grade that u desired~
awesome teacher. loved every minute of it. he's really funny and nice. the study guide is really useful - allows you to focus on what he's talking about and not have to take notes!!
Great teacher tho exam is not that easy...Nice policy! I am taking his MATH 1B now
The greatest teacher in the Math department!!! But then his class can become super-hard if you don't like to study. Very friendly, very social, very helpful!!! And he likes girls too)))
He is a great teacher. Very knowledgeable in mathematics. He is funny too. You can get perfect with his quizzes if you do all the hw problems. Your concepts must be very clear if you will do his T or F questions. You will learn a lot. Good to take him if you are a discipline student.
good but hard
As I am transferring he's one teacher I will alwys rem at FH. Took his class last yr and totally loved him. He is the best teacher in the Math dept. He genuinely wants all his students to succeed. So study hard and yow will get the grade you desire. And all you girls watch out he's definetely going to charm you with his charismatic personality!!
Absolutely an inspiration- You just want to do well in the class because he puts in a huge effort and has so much passion for his subject. VERY FUNNY like stand-up. Very compassionate and understanding. Not very forgiving though - so flakes stay away.
what a jerk have no idea what he is trying to check through his finals.... made a fool out of you when he said you have choice . His life is all calculus but he needs to realize that we have better things in life to do to then get ourselves depprseed by his extremely tricky final
Brian is AWESOME. He is very funny! He has that British humor that knocks my socks off every time! You don't have to take the quizzes if you're not ready, and the second midterm is also optional. He is very fair, but his final is extremely hard- which makes sense cause if you get an A on the final you get an A in class.
he is pretty gd teacher, but some of his test is quite hard.. but over all he is pretty gd!
Mr. Stanley is the only math teacher I've had who's such a good lecturer, I actually understood the concepts behind the work I was doing. HW is never collected, so grades are based on tests and quizzes. You don't have to take any quizzes, but beware... if you don't do well on the ones you do take, they'll be a much higher portion of your grade.
Man ! I just took Math 49 with him...I had a really bad experience with this professor....HW is not mandatory and so do quizes....but the grading style is too tough...you can hardly get an A in his class...it's really really hard to pass his class..in my class, almost half of us dropped the class....I would not recommend this professor at all !
I have no words for this teacher, he is "THE BEST" of all..he is so charming and adorable and makes you feel so comfortable in class. Have enjoyed each and every second of his class, omg i am in love with Mr.Stanley as he is way tooo HOT...:)
U R Awesome!
Mr. Stanley is the best teacher Ive ever had in my entire school carrer. He cares about his students so much that he wants everyone to be successful. I wish I had him for all my calculus classes. He is a very smart guy, I look up to him, and I am so proud to be his student. He is the best, the list just goes on and on. I just love him!
Mr. Stanley expects you to make your own choices, which was geat for me. If you don't act like a grown up, you may not do well in his class. He gives absolutely great lectures. In the math center he is non-judgmental, and very considerate, doesn't ever make you feel small like some others in there.
Very flexible teacher. Everything except for the first midterm and final are optional. If you get an A in the final you get an A in the class, and the final isnt that hard. He understands his math and is good at explaining it. Also he is a bit funny and can make math more entertaining.
This is the only teacher that I will always rememeber in my life, so far i havent seen such a great teacher who is so enthusiatic about his subject. I JUST LOVE MR. STANLEY...:)
great professor^____^
Hes a real good teacher, probably one of the best, but he is not fair. He really is easy on the girls and I really mean it when I say it. I don't think he realizes how unfair he is. Hes a good person but he is lonely and he really needs to realize that grading someone based on their gender shows what type of man he is. But I still respect him.
I don't see how he's being unfair... he gives everyone the same chance to ask questions and answers them patiently. he's a really really nice teacher and he makes math interesting!STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!!
He is good teacher. I think First exam is very very important to get "A"
The main concern that I had in his class was not the difficulty of his exams, but his high self-esteem really makes me puke. He's constantly stepping down on students. He thinks students are stupid in Foothill. So why he doesn't teach in a IVY-League school or go back to Britain if he thinks Britain is so much superior to US?
I Don't see anything wrong in this teacher and he is THE ONLY teacher who cares about his students ALOT. His classes are just amazing and you won't feel bored even for a sec. You will miss a life time opportunity if you don't take his class. He has changed my whole life and always make me feel Confident about myself. Thank you Brian!!!!
pretty good teacher! His exams are moderate! not too easy not too hard. the 2nd midterm is optional i suggest u dont take it if u dont need to. i didnt have the survival guide but my friends told me that it's perfect! he doesnt take attendance and collect homeworks at all! but he is so arrogant!!!
He is the best teacher i had ever met. He help students clearify math concepts. He help me gain confidence in Calculus again since i did extremely poor before in this subject. His lecture is super interesting and he is good at craking jokes. Exams' difficulty is acceptable. Highly recommended for learning. Not recommended if you want good grades
He seems quite jaded and tired of teaching at foothill. He locks the classroom door and doesn't really seem motivated.
This guy is awful. Stay away from him. I studied extremely hard and did well in his class. But he offered no office hours, wouldn't stay to help after class, and was a useless lecturer. He also has a clear and disturbing favoritism towards young, Asian female students. Stanley has a chip on his shoulder, and has no business teaching in a classroom.
the best teacher at foothill! I am serious. he doesn't really think that u are a high school student and almost everything is optional. quizzes, attendance homework, 2nd midterm are all optional!!! He is the best at foothill!
harsh grader
great teacher
He truly cares a lot about his students and my only gripe is that the homework isn't graded or at least collected. Homework is mandatory to do well in the class but it's too easy to slip behind without some prodding. A really good professor and he gives you a way to redeem if you can pull it all together for the Final. Definitely worth taking a cla
Arrogant and cocky. He thinks he's a "professor" but that title is not bestowed upon junior college instructors in America. Don't even bother with this guy.
though his final is pretty tough, but he is a great professor, really helpful, and gives clear explanations, easy to understand what he teaches! quizzes and 2nd midterm are all optional, you can make your own choice!
DO NOT BUY HIS SURVIVAL GUIDE! The childish and elementary schoo level survival guide is a scam. The font is so large I feel as if I am reading a text book from junior highschool.
The best teacher I have had bar none in my life. I was so scared of math and then I took this class. He is passionate and caring. I actually grew to appreciate math in his class never did before now.
Great teacher, you will have fun in the calss. and get a good grade. just do his homework (optional) then you will be fine with the test and final. Final is MC....
He gives a very offensive first day speech. He brags about having the highest retention rate at foothill. He also belittles and condems the other instructors at foothill who give weekly and daily quizes. He also makes disparaging remarks about the division dean for allowing unqualified people into the calculus sequence.
(Math 220/221)This is a great teacher. I have had many issues with math in the past. I has been a very difficult subject for me and I just could not understand it. Mr. Stanley took the time to talk to me about my issues and help me find ways to work around them. He also took the time in every class to answer everyone's questions and more. He's A+.
I felt lucky that I got Mr. Stanley's class in Beginner Algebra. He is a teacher who is dedicated to helping his student's understand the material, and that is half the battle. He knows his stuff and is secure enough to handle questions with grace. He is organized and makes it fun and interactive. For an Algebra class anyway. :) Two Thumbs up!
At first he seems like he is going to be a good teacher, but right away you sense his favoritism to certain students...it becomes so obvious its pathetic its as if the rest of the class does not excist. he favors and flirts with cute girls . I witnessed him (first hand) make an exception for one, but did not do it for others.
Stanley is a pretty good teacher. He isn't hard or easy. Calculus is a tough subject so unless it comes natural to you, practice is a must. Explanations in class can only go so far. Hw will challenge you and must be done regularly. He isnt perfect. He has his own style that everyone might not agree with, but he gets the job done. Take him.
This guy is really great!I thought he was hard after reading the comments below;however, his final was really easy.People who had taken math and got C or above in public exam would get an A.For people who had taken additional mathematics(you know what I mean),you would not have to attend his lesson, and you would get an A.If you want an A, take him.
hmm, so the last comment says his tests are hard for other math students....what in the world does that mean? "other math students" don't take his tests so that seems like an odd statement. Whatever, just do your work and your knowledge will show regardless of who the instructor is for the course. duh.
He is THE teacher who cares about his students ALOT. His classes are just amazing and you won't feel bored even for a sec. You will miss a life time opportunity if you don't take his class. He has changed my whole life and always make me feel Confident about myself.
he is getting easier and easier...take him for an A!!
Truly enjoyed his class. He is an amazing instructor. Great wit and humor - makes the class interesting and fun. I couldn't recommend a better instructor for mathmatics!
I like him a lot!! His explanation is very clear for students who have not taken calculus before. He emphasizes on concept and you must work hard to nail his exams. He also likes discussing problems with students. All quizzes and the second mid-term exam are optional. If you work hard, they are not gonna be a problem :)
Mr. Stanley is a wonderful teacher who really loves math and wants students to understand it. He is trying hard to show how we use math in everyday life and to make up interesting problems. He explains well and will go over things 2 or 3 times so that everybody can understand. His grading is strict but fair. I would take his class again.
I have never seen a person like him. I am amazed to see his devotion towards math. His support compels me to change my perception about math in a very positive way. And that's why I am fond of mathematics now. He is truly " incredible" in one word...................
He creates an ambiance of knowledge, critical thinking all through out his class. I get the most positive vibes from him. He is truly a gem. I can't help saying that I never want his class to end.He is much more than extra ordinary.I can't rate him because I feel he is really virtuous from every angle.
More than half of the class dropped or failed. His ratings appear high because the low ones were flagged and removed. He tends to help certain students, not all. He holds standards for students such as coming to class on time, which is fine, but then he's been late for his own office hours.
Calculus is hard, but he makes it easy. You will get A as long as you did a good job on final. second exam and quizs are optional, so you can simply opt out. Take him, you won't feel regret!
I love this teacher! He is absolutely amazing! The people who wrote bad reviews are ridiculous. He treats you like adults. If you are willing to put in the effort, an A is possible. Homework is optional which is nice. He doesn't give any busy work. He will help you understand anything you are struggling with. I strongly suggest taking him!
He is increbiably too charming of a man. Everything is basically optional except the final, but his grading policy can murder you. He teaches basic things, and expects you to apply it in the most abstract, difficult way possible on the midterm/final. However, he's really friendly and nice! Totally dedicated to math and expects you to be the same.
Totally mean and cruel. Good teaching at most times, but very mean indeed. And has a keen interest and focus on girls, specially with sympathy.
It seems nice at the beginning, you dont need to go to the classes and he doesnt really care what you do in the class while you remain quiet.. Everything seems fine as the class go until the exams, he gives you problems that were never done or shown.. He's classes are good but his exams are ridiculous hard, if u care about ur grade.. AVOID
He often skim by material to finish the syllabus on time. Although he is helpful, he's not straightforward. The final/midterm is basically your grade and practically nothing you actually saw before. The key to aceing his class is appliance, and I hope you had a good math background beforehand, he puts that to the test.
in class quizzes, midterm, and final are crazy hard, and 70% of your grade. He suggests that you think abstractly of what possible ways a problem can be and come up with your own problems and ask him during office hours. Clearly he believes everyone's life in the class is dedicated to math, or are math majors. -___- he's great as a person, though!
He's REALLY nice, but the tests are like nothing you've ever seen before. He expects you to know your stuff INSIDE and OUT. The material on the test is like nothing you'll see in class, or in the book. Or anywhere else. He's really helpful though... still ridiculously hard. Too abstract for my understanding.
Very helpful and fun lectures. Rarely a class you won't laugh or at least crack a smile (I know, math - who knew?). Definitely buy the lecture notes and use them, I didn't (I never take notes in math) but by the end of the quarter I really wished I had. He explains things in a relatable understandable way, all you have to do is listen and engage.
No instruction in the online class! Does not respond to discussion board questions, or update dates on the online site. not helpful
his lectures are super interesting and sometimes he bring toys to demonstrate what we are learning and makes it easier for the students to understand. Plus collaboratve activities are really helpful and also gives extra time for us to chat
this teacher is not easy for A...(although i eventually got an A) A good thing is if ur final score is better than ur avergae score of whole quarter, ur final score will be your course score. ahh...his class is interesting, but his tests are...just each question takes too many points, screw one u die
Unless you have prior knowledge of Calculus in high school or at another college, Stanley isn't the right instructor for you. None of his lectures helped me prepare for his exams and does throw major curveballs in those, despite easy homework and quizzes. Unless you have great critical thinking skills, AVOID HIM!
This is a hard class, but Stanley's a good teacher. He really tries to help you understand the material, but you still have to work really hard to understand all the concepts and different ways to apply them. The tests are nothing like the homework and lectures.
He's a bit overrated. Did a lot of work for the class. Does throw some curveballs in his exams, but if you read the textbook, you'll pass his classes.
This guy has seriously gone downhill with his helpfulness and clarity. Threw way too many curveballs on the final and midterm, after stating over and over he wouldn't. Would not recommend
His lecture is very organize, easy to understand, and he is very friendly. However, his exam is very hard. If you wanna learn math 1b, I recommend this prof, but if you want good grade, you should take another math class.
He's a nice guy, but I would recommend him if you had prior knowledge to calculus before coming to class. He is very helpful on being clear in his lectures, but his homework and tests tend to be tedious. He does throw curveballs in his exams, but I passed with an A. If you are up for a challenge, give him a try, but otherwise I'd stay far far away.
If you have never taken Calculus before, DO NOT attempt to take this class. He expects you to know Calculus & doesn't like when he has to go over PreCalc stuff. You can opt-out of half the HW, midterm, and all quizzes but it means the final will determine your grade. Exams nothing like hw and are filled with things you've never seen: very hard.
His system is simple: Show up to class, pay attention to lecture, read approx 15 pages a week, watch a few 10 minute videos every week(all of which are helpful), and get an A. You are able to choose what you want graded(HW, quizzes & the midterm are optional). This system can be easy to take advantage of, but get your stuff done, & you'll be fine.
He demands you to possess a full comprehension of the concept; which is really beneficial in the future. The best aspect of his class is your freedom to design your own grading system. His quizzes are little bit tricky; however, if you are willing to delve into the subject, they come quite mutually. Moreover, his final can save your grade .
Was getting an A before the final exam. Flunked it because it's all multiple choice. Ended up with a C.
Take the man. You want him to be your teacher. You want to learn from the man. His quizzes and exams might be challenging at first; nonetheless, endeavor and persevere. See him in his office hours. One tip: try not to opt out every quizzes, learn, do it once and try to get a good grade in other tests. You DO NOT want to put all pressure in finals
I can't recommend Stanley highly enough. He's just a fantastic professor all around. The class I was in was rather large, but if you make the effort, he will be more than happy to help you. You also never have to worry about him not knowing the material. I never saw that happen once.
Took in the summer. Works with his students. You can opt out of tests if it helps your grade. Gives EC. Very good teacher. British accent is pleasant. Didn't throw many curveballs until the Final Exam. One of the most reasonable and talented Math teachers at Foothill. Great teacher for 1A. Attendance is recommended. Do the HW and you'll be fine.
Terrible professor. Never helps, even if you come directly to him for help. Take another professor. This class is really hard!! The tests are hard and he only gives 40 minutes to complete them, you have to be a math genius to do the tests in that time. Hated going to class, and I had to withdraw.
Great teacher and he cracks jokes in class. Very understanding and always tells us that you need to put in hard work and he understands because he says he's not naturally smart. You get the grade for the amount of work you are willing to put in to learn.
He makes so many grading mistake and hate students to ask for fix he even threaten student not going to give a bonus credit he will gonna give everyone. His class have something to learn and he tries to make student understand the concept but his attitude and way of saying is very rude...
Do whatever he asked. And it is a lot! Choose your teammates carefully. Because there's a lot of homework. His gives EC but I don't see how much it will affect your final grade. What really matters is the final exam. I got a 118 out of 120 in midterm and good grades in homework but end up with B .The reason might be I found the final is very hard.
Humorous, gentle, responsible. Perfect for international students.
He's very knowledgeable and helpful. His lectures are amazing, too. However, his final is really hard nonetheless.
There's a lot of work involved but if you go to class, complete the homework AND the other problems from the textbooks he assigns (but not graded), you should do fine. He sometimes seems like he's in a bad mood but he's just sassy.
Great professor. Classes are interesting and full of illustrative examples. Homework helps to understand the concepts, very clear grading criteria. Very easy to get an A if you are doing homework and drill problems.
His explanations are good, his lectures are ok. But we did most of the work outside the classroom, and then faced some very creative problems in his tests that even the tutors at Foothill couldn't figure out. He's also a very tough grader. Class average for the last exam we took before the final was 50%.
Amazing teacher! Really tries to get the students to understand the material and make it accessible to everyone. It's a really hard class, but if you work hard and OPT IN to almost everything, you'll be fine
Homework must be done in groups, in pen, & neat. Uses Active Calculus (free book) but no answer key so can't check answers. Must take midterm and final (multiple choice). Also 4 tests, you can opt out if want. Math Survival guide with class notes useful. Kind of self-teaching class - you watch video, do homework, then he covers questions you have.
One of the best math professors I've ever had. Lectures are engaging, information is articulated extremely well, and any student who puts in effort can get a lot out of Stanley's class. If you have a sense of humor you'll appreciate every lecture. I cannot recommend this man's classes highly enough.
Stanley is a great professor. You only have to take 1 exam and the final. However, I suggest you complete all the CP's in the beginning of the quarter and at least attempt the 2 midterms. You do NOT want your final to be worth so much. The final exam was moderate, just go over the practice exams. Highly recommend Brian Stanley, he's very caring!
He is an awesome professor. He has core and non-core tests and assignments, so it is really flexible. His finals can be bombs, but if you study and learn, you should be fine. He has his own notes, and that's the framework of the class, so it is easier to catch up. His lectures are amazing, and he is open to all questions. He is the best math prof.
Classic british humour, Emphasis on concepts (which is very important) and has VERY FLEXIBLE grades (only need to take two compulsory exams). If you are signing up for his class, I highly recommend to find different examples that are tougher (not algebra wise but concept) as his final exams is a no joke. I was at 90% and dropped to a B so yeah.....
The professor is good at lecturing and he has a clear and flexible grading system. You can opt out some of the non-core exams or assignment and only be graded by those you participate and wont affect your total grade. The assignments are good drills while the exams are not too difficult.
Professor Stanley is one of those teachers who I like as a person but I feel lacks in quality as a teacher. I believe that this ultimately boils down to his teaching style in class and how he never manages to post his notes online ( also 2 textbooks? really?). In my opinion, only take this teacher if you have a really good foundation on Integration
professor Stanley is a great person to be around with but I hated his exam format and teaching style. He gives us too little time to complete his tests and extra credit problems.
throws many curveballs in his tests although he claims that hes not tricking his students. hes also really bad at giving partial credits. Oh, and the average score for his test was 48%.
The study material he gives is not sufficient for the exams he gives. The last exam he had us take had a 40% average. Funny but spends half the class off subject.
Does not cover most of lecture, makes you do everything outside of class. I had to file a complaint with the Division Dean because of exam conflicts and made me take his exam on the same day as my other exam so had to test for 8 hours. now only 25% of the class remains after the drop deadline. so overall avoid him because he will try to fail you
Very clear lectures. Offers good insights for those who come prepared. Very flexible grading system. Places a lot of responsibility on students. Some students do not accept that responsibility and end up failing. But this is not through Mr. Stanley fault. He is the best instructor for the mature student.
He always uploads additional exercise for students to practise on myportal. The tests are fairly similar to the practice problems. His lectures are easy to understand. He ueses his survival guide as his major lecture notes. It is very easy to read and covers everything you need to know for exams.
Not that hard to get a good grade from Mr Stanley. Just have to do the hw according to his guidline, read his survival guide, do the practice problems he uploads on myportal. Boom A :-)
He always uploads practice exams and extra exercise on myportal for students. The tests are fairly, at least 80% similar to what the practice exam look like. He is very generous tbh. He told us we will be given what method to use to solve the problem on the integration exam, which makes the exam a lot easier.
I came back to foothill and take 1B after transferring. Compare to my college professors, Brian takes baby steps to make sure everyone in the class understands the material. He gives tons of examples in class and real life application. He is the best professor i've ever taken math courses so far.
I like math, but I am not good at it. So I study for it more than any other class. Am I gonna use what I learn? Probably not! It just makes me appreciate everything I use daily. Prof Stanley makes a boring and difficult class to a fun one. He gives lots of extra credits. It's up to you to study and take advantage of those. There is no free lunch!
Stanley really cares about his students and their performance despite what some people feel that he is judgmental. Homework is graded strictly so just follow all the rules he lays out and try to do all the hw independently. Gives plenty of studying resources and if you do all of them then exams will be easy
To get a good grade from this class, just watch Prof Leonard YouTube channel. You'll thank me! Prof Stanley asks difficult exam questions harder than the class examples and HW questions. So be ready for that. He's very particular with the HW assignments. Don't do a lousy job if you want to collect your extra credit.
It's a mystery where he gets his final questions other than that he is a hilarious dude to study math with.
At first I found his class structure and syllabus to be quite complicated and intimidating, but once I understood it I realized how great it was. Almost every assignment is opt in, and isn't counted towards your grade unless you get at least 80%. Exams are heavily based off his class notes.
Very difficult to get an A if you haven't had exposure to calculus before. I will just say there are better teachers out there. Too much time spent lecturing & too little time going over examples. The homework has to follow very specific rules in terms of formatting to be turned in. Overexplains the rules/instructions and ends up being vague.
He is an awful professor if you've never taken calc. He has too specific grading schemes and if you don't understand something, don't bother asking, he won't help you if he thinks your question is stupid. All his material is online but he gives literally zero examples and expects you to do everything alone. He helped write the sucky textbook.
He is so lovely and humorousi love taking his courseAttending his class will make me feel relaxed and happy. Although he advocates self-study before class, I think it is not a very difficult thing, and I benefit a lot from this process.
Some of the most good-hearted professors that you rarely find these days. 1. Very responsible to emails 2. Always there In office hours to answer your questions 3. His textbook is covered with detail examples and easy to read. Midterms and finals are very much like the book examples and homework. 4. Hilarious lecture
This class had the potential to be good but is ruined by: 1. FLIPPED CLASSROOM (look it up) don't take this course unless you're confident in your ability to teach yourself 80% of the concepts without errors in understanding 2. The professor is passive aggressive + takes out stress on students 3. Rude when answering questions he thinks are stupid
If u 1. Pay attention in class 2. Do the hw and use the generous study guides that he provides, you will not have the same experience as that poor soul from 1B below me. :) If you dont want to do any work but get your pass handed to you, dont take this class (and dont take any classes and dont go to college). Stanley was GREAT.
I don't think anyone taking Math 1A should have to ever go through as many hoops as you should have to like in Stanley's class. He uses a terrible textbook and is very VERY particular on how he wants his homework formatted, and it almost feels that he changes his mind every week. Not at all a receptive professor, nor sympathetic, nor enthusiastic.
Prepare to have to teach yourself. Confusing class structure and he makes you learn material yourself at home then just do random work I class. Would never take again. Other professors I spoke with disapprove as well
The class is not that bad, but he's moody and salty
