Never have I had a worse teacher. Gives reading checks EVERYDAY on topics we haven't learned. Unlike any other teacher I have had before, he grades homework by accuracy which is horrible for your grade. Boring lectures that seem to drag on forever. Be ready for a quarter of self studying and struggling.
Extremely test heavy class. If you fail a test you can kiss your passing grade goodbye. Grading is extremely tough and wrong answers and wrong work will result in a serious grade penalty. Textbook use in mandatory and expensive. This class isnt one you take to get an A but in hopes to just pass. Good luck but I dont recommend this class to anyone
Brian does care about his students. Lectures were taught with low level examples, but rarely touched examples that required more thought. Sometimes the assigned online homework was more intense than what was taught in lecture. Overall, Brian wants to do a good job. He simplifies the difficult aspects of learning physics, and encourages discussion.
Brian does hold lectures with plenty of examples pertaining to the topic. However, these examples rarely resembled the problems that show up on tests. The tests were worth more than half of the grade (55%). So do badly on one test, and it is nearly impossible to make it up. Very tough grader, all assignments are graded on accuracy. Overall, tough.
I don't know why there aren't many good reviews about him here, but he definitely is a great instructor. I am taking his Physics 121 now, and I feel he gives us reasonable amount of work. I wan't good at high school physics, but I feel like I am succeeding in this class! He is caring and encourages us to ask questions in class.
I like his teaching style. I have heard he has a degree in Physics Education instead of a Physics degree. He assigns reading quizzes, so you may consider buying those expensive books because the questions are simple but they are from the text (This takes a small portion of your score). We have 5 exams this quarter, short exams and reasonable! :)
Brian is a God at physics and a God in general. He is amazing and every time I go to his class I just wish I was him. You will not regret taking Brian. If you rearrange the letters in Brian you get brain. Brian has a big brain and his inspiration will go down in the legacy of Bellevue College.
most of his assignments and tests are fairly difficult but as long as you study well and pay attention in class you should be able to do well
The worst grade system I've ever seem. He count our exam grade by sections and each one worth 10. If you got 8/10 or 7/10, the you can just stay at home and cry.
Physics is a hard subject. Brian does an amazing job of breaking it down and makes doing well possible. His lectures are amazing and he instills a solid conceptual understanding if you pay attention. His exams are tough but if you practice problems you will be able to do well. His homework questions are much harder than what is done in class.
Brian is one of the best teachers that I've ever met. He is knowledgeable and he does care his students a lot. Exams are reasonable and doable. He has his own teaching style which is new to me but will adapt it after one week. He is great overall.
Professor Brian is respectful and really care about his student. Do your practice exam and HW it will help your exam. Follow his instructions you will be fine. Class is not hard if you study hard and there are lots of extra credit.
Brian do not taking attendance but his lecture is really help. Taking note and doing the group work, then you will getting a good score.
Brian break down the concept and wanting you learn in his class. He is really patient to answer your question and the practice exam did help your exam.
Brian is the best! He really know the material that he teach, and he is really happy to help you when you asked him question. The grade system is fair, final is counted into other exams. It only worth 18% of our grade. You don't need to worry about it even you did not do well on it.
The extra credit that professor Brian provided raised my grade from B+ to A. He said he was not usually doing extra credit but I'm glad he did.
Professor Brian is very knowledgeable on physics. I definitely take his class gain!
Brian is a great professor. Lectures are really well done. Test are difficult but not too bad. Homework load is reasonable and helps you prepare for the test. Labs are very important and hard. Brian one on one helps makes sure you understand the whole concept not just how to solve the problem which is super helpful.
He only had 4 tests including the final and each test was worth 20-30 points. If you mess up on one test, your grade will plummet. He gives out practice tests which are helpful and somewhat similar to the actual test. If you ask for help, he'll thoroughly explain a problem to you. He gives out some extra credit towards the end of the quarter.
Brian is a really knowledgeable professor that makes an attempt to help all of his students. He holds office hours almost everyday (some before class and some after) to make sure that his students understand everything (yet they are often underutilized). He really tries to make sure all of his students are on the same page as far as content.
He is amazing! Very helpful, provides many ways to reinforce learning before exams. Do all of this - and if you need more help he is always accessible. I wish i went to his office hours more, so please do that! I struggled in physics till this class and now I actually find it fun. Take him please!
A lot of lecture videos to watch because of COVID-19. 3 exams and 1 final that worth 48% of the entire grade, while the rest 52% are easy points consisting of written HW, lab, and Wileyplus HW. Stephanik is good overall but lecture very heavy, and you have to do really well on the exams/final to get a good grade, which has tricky questions.
Brian is a great person and teacher! Really nice and wants students to succeed. The exams were really hard, but the labs were not too bad. I enjoyed watching his lectures. Although the class was majorly asynchronous, having a Discord chat for physics helped a lot! Also, definitely attend office hours, there will be hard topics.
Brian is a great professor. His lectures cover the material in addition to the textbook reading. His lectures are super helpful because he is great at explaining the material. While it is asynchronous, he has office hours 4 times a week and is more than happy to explain anything we have covered in great detail to really help you understand.
Brian has a great understanding on what he teaches and allow you to understand more about the world of physics. But his class felt harder than needed. His written and WileyPLUS hw was difficult and took multiple days to complete and his test suddenly became harder compared to the previous courses he has taught. Exam were worth 50% of your grade.
Brian is an absolute gem of a professor and human. His lectures are the most easy to follow from any class I've taken online or in person. Yes, his classes are difficult, but it's physics! He is available for help in his near-daily office hours where you can feel comfortable to ask questions without feeling dumb. Brian is seriously amazing imo.
Fantastic professor, highly recommended, these negative reviews are bonkers. He assigns short and sweet lectures, you watch them, his asks you easy versions of what he went over. Not difficult. He's lab heavy, but gives crystal clear guidance for doing well on them, and he'll support you every step of the way, it's actually awesome. Great prof.
Brian reasonable. From lectures to tests, if you put in 2-3 hours of studying a day, it will be relatively easy. He responds quickly to emails and is straightforward on how he grades. Office hours are useful for practice exam questions or to listen to other's questions, so go even if you dont need specific help. Extra credit gives a nice buffer.
He's genuinely a shining gem within BC's middling physics department. He cares about your success and is willing to give you the help you need to succeed. Will extensively assist you during office hours if you choose to go to them. If you regularly study and do the material that he asks you to do, exams should not be a significant challenge.
Best physics prof I've ever had! Has a remarkable ability to ask the best guided questions when you're asking for help. Asks clicker questions in class (not for a grade) that really help you understand the conceptual aspects of the material. It's a hard class of course, but if you do the work, you get a grade you deserve AND solid grasp of physics.
No matter DO NOT take this class at any cost! Wait 'till there is a better professor next quarter. DO NOT get baited by the other reviews. None of his course materials connect in any way his exams are extremely difficult and do not reflect any of the other material. The rate he gives our new assignments it's impossible to focus on anything. AVOID!
Group projects can be tricky be aware of communicating with your team as Brian just throws the assignment out there without actual help. exam grading system is TERRIBLE and takes a huge chunk of your grade if you miss even one question AND THE QUESTIONS ARE LITERALLY 10X more challenging than the examples he gives. LECTURES ARE DRY, AND DRAGS.
Brian is very available to offer help. Has dry lectures. Homework is time consuming and requires you to actually know the material. Tests are extremely difficult with VERY little margin for error. Most time consuming class I've taken at BC. Sometimes assignments overlap which can be annoying. He wants you to succeed you just need to put in the time
L teacher. On one of the labs, he subtracted almost 2 points because I couldn't complete the final draft on time for my group to turn in. I turned it in before the deadline but not the time my group wanted because I was on a school trip that lasted for a couple of days so I wasn't able to be as responsive. The tests are like 55% of our grades.
Pros: He teaches really good. Cons: There is a lot of assignments. A lot of things need to do for group project. Need to read a lot of articles. The exams are super tough, I am not kidding! You can't find only answer from Chegg or any other websites. Feel super regret to take this class. Kinda destroy my life. Don't trust other comments.
Curves applied on exams and end of year grades. Be the group leader in every lab as you'll get extra points and keep everyone on track. I attended every office hour for help and professor does a great job to direct you in the right direction. Last quarter had horrible physics teacher and did way more work that this class so I'm grateful for Brain.
Wiley hw isn't a big part of grade. Test based off of lectures and written hw (doesn't count for grade but good to do). Good prof, not sure you'll find better. Easy to understand his lectures. B is doable. Had a final quarter long group lab, but it wasn't that hard cuz there were check-ups every week. Can get by without lab kit.
Great teacher! Always available through texting and is willing to work with you. 40 minutes of good (asynchronous) lecture per day. Gives good responses to questions. Office hours 4 times a week. 4 exams per quarter, I did well on them using a notes sheet (all open-note, open-textbook, open-lecture, etc.) Would recommend and would take again! :)
Great teacher! Very clear and accessible outside of class. Gives good answers to questions. All Wiley homework has solutions enabled. 40 minutes (asynchronous) lecture each day. 4 exams in total, not that hard b/c it's open-note, open-textbook, open-lecture, etc. Office hours 4 times a week. All in all very good teacher
stephanik will make sure that you learn the material. He is an extremely picky grader. This is a heavy class lots of group labs, and homework. Exams are 55% of the grade but should be doable if you put in at least 3hrs of studying each day. Go to his office hours he is super helpful.
He's probably one of the two best physics teachers on campus. He wants you to succeed and is extremely helpful during office hours, and his lectures are really thorough and descriptive. Your class grade is probably going to be majority exams so make sure you study, but that's unfortunately just how college often works at this level.
Easily the best professor I have had in 3 years at BC. One of the few professors that actually teach and help you understand the material you signed up to learn. That being said this class was also easily the hardest class (BY FAR) I have ever taken at BC. I've done the BC Calculus, CS, Physics sequence + gen-eds. I'm not over-exaggerating.
This class is super hard but Brian wants you to succeed. He's not a lenient grader, but he has some pretty helpful policies. Probably the best physics professor at BC, his lectures are amazing. Will be taking his class for 123
Took Prof. Stephanik for PHYS121-Online, his lectures help and he's available outside of class too. He is more lenient on quizzes and hw but has tough, concise exams. A lot is covered, as well as additional lab work so theres a decent time commitment needed.
Before I took this course I was actually happy, but somehow Brian was able to take that happiness away from me. He has deluded himself to think that 50% treat average is a good thing. Don't worry though, you can study every day for 6 hours and score below that average. Thanks you Brian Stephanik for everything #sike #worstprofessor #notswag #L
Professor Stephanik's course was a frustrating experience. Overwhelming lectures, limited resources, and vague teaching hindered learning. Emphasis on difficulty overshadowed support. Caution: think twice before enrolling. He's a community college professor with an ivy-league ego.
His lectures lacked enthusiasm, clarity, and his communication skills sucked. He displayed a complete disregard for the time and effort put into this class. I strongly urge others to explore other options and Bellevue College should reconsider professor Stpehanik and look into other teachers for their physics classes.
He teaches some difficult courses at BC- but he was always respectful, accessible outside of class and understanding when I had him for 121.. Physics series itself is frustrating in amount of material that's covered quickly. Exams are rough but he gives partial credit and some EC. Keep up with coursework, work diligently on labs and you'll pass.
Professor Brian Stephanik's teaching style lacked enthusiasm and clarity, leaving students confused and frustrated. The course lacked adequate resources and support, hindering the learning experience. I would caution against enrolling in his class and recommend exploring other options for a more effective and engaging learning environment.
Taking professor Stephanik's class wasn't a good experience. Probably the toughest professor I've ever met in BC. He just gave too much assignments... I had no time to study my major at all. Also this professor aims to only give out grades around 80%, so it's best to avoid people who are looking for A's.
My experience may be unique in online environment (as his reviews from in-person classes over at WWU look much better), but I was frustrated most by lack of overall engagement (as much as discussion boards suck sometimes, they really do help collective learning) and unfairly graded exams (few questions with one question being worth half the exam).
The 1 star ratings below lack individual accountability. Physics will be hard, you can't expect a perfect grade and Stephanik does a great job in providing what you need to succeed. Put in what you consider the minimum work and you will do fine!
Be aware. Most of the reviews criticizing this professor have been deleted. I saw at least 10 reviews stating about how hard he was in the previous quarter and they are mostly gone. His lecture was clear but lots of hw were given and his grading was very strict. I would not recommend him.
WARNING! At least 10+ bad reviews are completely gone. Do not be fooled! This teacher is horrible and lacks compassion for his job. Please stay away or you will regret it BIG TIME
Do not take this professor's class! Many bad reviews have been deleted for whatever reason but the upvotes on the bad reviews still showcase how bad of a teacher Brian Stephanik really is. I took his class a while back and I 100% agree that he sucks and my university professors are much better.
His lectures are very detailed and provide great examples on every unit. His office hours are also very useful when it comes to any questions regarding the course.
EVERYONE NEEDS TO STOP BESMIRCHING THE GOOD NAME OF BRIAN STEPHANIK. Breakdown of hours per week (aprox. 7 hours max) 2-3 hour lecture. This is a lot, can be watched sped up 10-15 homework q's, no longer than two hours. Every two weeks a lab is assigned, 4 hours total Class grade is 55% exam, and 93% for A. Generous stem classes!
There was literally a question called "click for one point"
He's a nice guy but his tests are poorly written and he make corrections while you're taking them. Averages were usually between 55-70%, both for my class and others. Lectures way more tedious than they needed to be and didn't really prepare me for the homework or tests. If you value your time or GPA go with someone else for this class.
Overall: PHYS116 - solid. The class is a big time-commitment - requires a lot of work + studying, but worth it. Weekly HWs, reading quizzes, bi-weekly labs. 3 exams total, each w/ 5 MC + 1 free response; they are tough (50 min). At the end of the term, he's very generous w/ grading + offers some extra credit, so push through and you will succeed!
Professor Stephanik was great! It's a difficult class, but that's just because of the content. Professor Stephanik makes it as easily understandable as possible, and he is SO accessible. Office hours are held every day. Nice and good at explaining concepts. Extra credit is available.
Please close your eyes and choose him. It's a difficult class, but that's because it's difficult in the first place, and the professor goes into great detail. But there's heavy labs, and the exams are huge, but they're not that hard. The exams are short.
absolutely suck at lecturing, very unorganized and mistakes everywhere
does not know how to teach despite having done it for many years, the worst physics class I've ever taken (I was excited about this class before taking it and now hate it)
I am amazed by this guy's ability to obtain a lecturer position with such incompetence. A shame to hold a PhD in physics (education).
Such a disappointment now that he teaches both at BC and UW, ruining students' interests in physics in both campuses. I don't know how someone can manage to teach this poorly.
This guy uses atoms and particles and molecules interchangeably, I wonder how he even got hired in the first place.
Considering this was my first physics course - Brian was OK. The main feeling I got was that he would much rather be teaching higher level physics, but got stuck teaching 100-level classes at a community college. My biggest gripe is that he definitely pulls out the hardest questions for the exams - way harder than anything in the homework.
Doesn't know the concepts really well, and is very mean when you ask him for help.
Had a really hard time with this professor, he made us do physics online way and it was very confusing and hard to comprehend the topic. I am struggling in this class and I am trying my best. I wish I haven't taken him.
this class alone tanked my gpa from a 3.95 to a 3.7. Seriously, he doesn't care that almost everyone received a failing grade. The content on exams aren't well explained during lectures(if at all). It is also difficult to reach outside of class when you have questions.
I think people forget that physics is a very complicated/unforgiving subject; stephanik is way too overhated here. he's not the best, sure, but he's serviceable. His lectures are pretty good (lengthy, though), he's always available for office hours, provides practice problems in-person sometimes, but his tests are brutal: 50% of the overall grade.
The worst lecturer ever
The class itself isn't hard if you study, focus on the textbook, and use helpful resources like school tutors or group studies. The real issue is the unreasonable teacher. I have a lot I could say, but I'll stay professional and simply advise others to avoid this teacher at all costs and take the class with someone else.
OK this guy is for those of you who actually care about learning physics- and if you do, you will love this guy. If you don't, and you just want an easy A, go with someone else I guess. You will have to work hard and really try, but nothing is unreasonable. His office hours skills are exceptional, I have yet to find a professor this helpful!
He should be the standard for physics profs. Grades well, teaches well, responds quickly, etc. Ignore the negative reviews as they're just salty. Having experience with both profs, take Gamble if you don't want to learn and get an easy A, and take Stephanik if you want to learn and get an A (with quasi-BS effort)
I am one of the students who truly cares about physics. For me it is not just about getting an easy A. I believe it is important to study and do well in advanced classes. However, I have to say that Brian is the worst professor I have ever had.
This class single-handedly destroyed my GPA from 3.8 to 3.4. Dr. Brian doesn't appear to care that 70% of the class is flunking. His lectures are entirely useless - he mumblingly goes through derivations without providing the concepts. When you ask a question , he ignores them or answers with one-word answers like "obvious" or "trivial."
Listened to ONE positive comment saying "pls just close your eyes and choose him" and have NO REGRETS. Did much better than I expected, and owe it to his teaching STRUCTURE. Rly organized lectr, teaches concepts clearly, & lays out lab expectations in advance. Class isn't easy but the rules are SPELT OUT & he puts SO MUCH effort in & WANTS to help!
Difficult teacher, he does not care bout his student I felt like. I am very surprised of his rating. If you care about your gpa skip him. Also, mixes topic and does not seem that he is knowledgable in the topics. Again, if you care about your sanity and gpa take any other phys teacher.
Teacher could've done a better at teaching. He does not seem to know enough to be teaching physics in my fair opinion, I am very disappointed in taking him I wish I just waited for any other teacher.
I did not like his style of teaching, I really had a love for physics but not after this class. I feel so upset with myself but more with how the teacher teaches. Never have I ever struggled on topics as much as when Brian starts explaining them. I had to go learn everything with Chatgpt. Please skip him if you care about your education.
Brian is an incredible professor. The class was heavy on group work, but he facilitates it very well. One group I worked in had a problem student but Brian worked with us and didn't hold it against us or our grades. Very knowledgeable about physics and never dry when lecturing or answering questions.
