Great in every aspect
He was a very helpful, fun, and an informative teacher. He took us to Las Vegas for the big field trip! He is nice and has a sence of humor. I really likd him!!!
Professor Stokes is an extraordinary teacher filled with motivating enthusiasm and passion. He makes the study of anthropology more than a requirement, but an enjoyable learning experience at the same time! I can gurantee I will never be able to watch Star Wars again and not be reminded of his eager yet hilarious lectures.
I couldnt have found a better teacher at Hancock! How we got so lucky, I'll never know! Brian Stokes is so passionate about Anthropology, it rubs off on almost everyone in the class! Such an enjoyable teacher, I only missed one class...and it was because I had too! A stand-up comedian for a teacher.....cant get any better than that!
Stokes was a good teacher. His class was harder than most, but he taught well and made it interesting.
I took the class out of curiosity and ended up fascinated with the subject- Mr Stokes leads us with questions that erased the stereotyped opinions from so many of us. Take his class and be amazed.
This wasn't my favorite class but I did have fun arguing with Stokes. He definetly loves monkeys!!!
Stokes Rocks! hard core! rock on homes!
He is the best teacher by far at Hancock. He makes learning so much fun. I never missed one class of his because he was so great. He has a great sense of humor and good personality. I highly reccomend this class to everyone. The subject is interesting as well but it wouldnt be the same if he didnt teach it.
Awsome teacher, teaches the material well and doesnt over load you with home work, finds interesting ways to teach his class :)
A wonderful teacher! He gets students involved, really cares about anthropology, and is ecxcited to share his knowledge with those who want to learn.
Good teacher. Always makes us laugh. The class isn't too easy, but it's not insanely hard. Be prepared to study, though.
Awesome class, very hands on, cool field trips, great teacher...
His class is challenging and requires everyday attendance. BUT, he's the BEST teacher I've had!!! He's a natural comedian and shares his passion with students. EVERYONE PLEASE TELL YOUR FRIENDS TAKING INTERNET CLASSES TO STOP BECAUSE THEY WILL SOON ERASE GREAT TEACHERS LIKE HIM!
The best teacher ever I ready transfer to Cal Poly but I will try to ge his next class just for fun. His class is quite challenging but if you read and take time to go over the notes is going to be easy. I WAS SO MAD THE CLASS WAS JUST FOR ONE HOUR he deserves to get at least 2.5 hours. He will make you laught and learn at the same time.
Best teacher ever. Take class from him, you will learn a lot.
Brain is a great teacher...I thought this class would be the boring one...Turns out it was my favorite..He keeps you learning and laughing....Very fun class!!
I have taken almost every single class that he teaches at AHC and I am not even anthro major. He is a great teacher, with phenomenal teaching style. His classes are always fun and interesting.
This was my first on-line class. Teacher is great, very helpful! You will get an A in this course if you do what he asks. Reading the chapters is a must for a good grade. If you read the chapters and take notes while watching the videos, you will go good on the tests. The online discussions were very fun and interesting.
Stokes is a pretty good teacher. He's always available to answer questions and will give you an A if you try hard enough. Some of his jokes are off color but funny. He's hilarious when you catch him outside of class. :)
If catching him out of class means seeing him at a local winery! He is super funny and a great teacher. I learned a LOT. I hear his field trips to Ireland get crazy!
I do not recommend taking the online condensed version of Anthro 101. 6 weeks is not a lot of time to do all the work required in the class. Lots and lots of reading and discussion board usage. Plus, you need a Netfliz subscription to do movie reviews on Blockbusters that never made it to the theatres.
greatt person he is really funny and has a good personailty makes jokes like krazy
mr stokes is even sexier then tim white! awesome teacher. be sure to read your book! and dont click your damn pen.
I took his Anthro 102 Distance class. It's very easy. Do the work required and you'll get an A
Mr. Stoaks is a great teacher! Very funny too you will laugh tons! He is always willing to help when your lost or confused. The class will only be hard if you don't read the book and pay very close attention in class. If you do this you will do well.
Favorite teacher by far! The class is very easy if you just make an effort. He is very fair in grading, quizes are full proof if you take the extra 5min to visit the book website and make a notecard. Very funny, lots of jokes, makes it worth going to class!
Teacher is a real stickler for deadlines...to the frieken "T" with deadlines. I took both his online classes. He's an easy grader and good communicator with email! lots of work with article assignments and discussion boards..but they're easy. QUIZES are beyond ridiculous with stupid questions. MAKE SURE YOU READ THE CHAPTERS EVER SOOO CLOSELY!!
he likes star wars...a lot
Great teacher! He made things interesting and he is a very down to earth guy. Go to class and take notes, he tells you exactly what is on the tests. If you do the work you will get a good grade.
The picture really does not do him justice :D He's a great teacher, just participate, and try and it's a great class.
AWESOME TEACHER! He's so capitavated by the subject, and you can tell he loves what he does! DON'T CLICK YOUR DAMN PEN, show up on time, participate and do the reading. His lectures are great, and entertaining. By far the best teacher you can get at AHC. I recommend him to everyone. He's very helpful if you're stuck, just ask! Plus he's a hottie!
Stokes is AWESOME! This is the first class that I've taken at Hancock that kept me intersted AND entertained. I learned Anthropology and became a better student. Stick to the syllabus, read the book, show up on time, and participate. He's a natural teacher and wanted me to succeed.
Stokes is a really good teacher. Very helpful with answering every question as best he could. I was taking too many units i had to drop his class cause its no joke. He has extra credit, its a field trip but its cool. Its simple, do the work get the grade.
I took this class to just fill my Gen Ed requirement. I was not happy to have to take it. However it has turned out to be my most favorite class that I have taken at Allan Hancock! I loved the text and the assignments really made me think! It was a lot of reading and writing but the writing was not intensive and the topics were super interesting.
I just started taking Cultural Anthropology and all I can say is HOTTIE! This guy is fun, interesting, and a great teacher. I can't wait to go back to class next week.
Brian Stokes is a great teacher, one of the best I've had at Hancock so far. Expect to learn a lot, pay attention, participate, and show some respect.
Stokes wastes an incredible amount of time policing the classroom and useing stupid voices in an attempt to get people to participate. Unfortunately, only three weeks into the class about half of the people have dropped, an incredibly high number for any class at Hancock.
I'm currently taking Anthro as a night class with Stokes. Per week we do one article on line and read one chapter. He is enthusiastic in his speeches and brings humor to each class session. I actually look forward everyone to attending his class. I am now more then ever interested in a subject I had no idea existed. Class highly recomended.
Professor McDreamy !!!!
Great teacher. Funny, and clearly knows what he is talking about. Will reply to an email very quickly. If you have a questioon he will respond to the best of his abiblity. This is the class I wake up in the morning to go to.
Very knowledgeable instructor who is willing to help his students succeed. He sometimes gets a little grating in his lectures, and has no problem calling you out if you're disrupting him. If you're willing to overlook this, however, there's a lot to be learned from this guy and he's definitely recommended.
I think Mr. Stokes is an amazing teacher. You can tell he really loves what he does. His passion is anthropology and coming from a christain girl i never tought i would respect someone with the views he has as much as i do. In order to maintain a good grade in his class you MUST do the reading. It is possible though! Good Luck:)
I learned much more than academics in this class, I learned a lot about myself. He's great! VERY qualified. Not just informative but also hilarious! I highly recommend him! Just don't click your pen!
The whole 3 people complaining about Stokes were probably just angry that he constantly puts out of line people in place. Anyways, Sir Stokes is a G. You'll learn alot about cultures, your own culture, and yourself.
I took this class years ago, but I never forgot how great of a teacher Prof. Stokes was. He was hilarious, made the material understandable and was very cool. I never forget how he used to compare human behavior to that of animals lol! I believe we lost this great teacher here in San Diego. Great luck Prof. Stokes!
If you can overlook his ego and need to charm the ladies he's actually a pretty good teacher. You'll learn about Anthro and a lot of other things.
i wasnt sure what to expect when i signed up for this class , but stokes makes it enjoyable to learn and go to ! hes very funny and keeps his class under control by calling people out :] he makes a 3 hour class fly by ! strongly recommend him for anthro 102 ! :]
Stokes is a gifted instructor who probably spends his waking hours improving his lectures and responding to his students. If you're just in it for the points don't bother but if you want to learn and be challenged he's the instructor for you. He has a great sense of humor and is super approachable as you can tell by some of the posts here.
Be aware that this course is extremely under rated. This is a 5 unit class and only earn 3 units. Thats why this class starts with standing room only, and only a handful left for finals. In each exams you must know, understand, be able to explain how they apply at least 100 terms, plus write two short and one long essay. keep it under 8-10 units.
I took Stokes years ago when I was a working single mother. The class was challenging although he made it funny and interesting. I'm now in grad school and I credit Stokes for my academic success. He will quickly weed out anyone who's been pushed through the educational system and prepare others for graduate school and beyond.
I have to say that while I got an A in this class, this was THE hardest class I have ever taken..and alot of work and studying! Mr Stokes is by far the best teacher I have ever had online. He responds fast to your emails, grades quick and is more than fair on a subject that is so hard. I wouldnt recommend this class in fast track though as it is qu
An absolute joke of a professor. Asks incredibly ambiguous questions. Use your own words too much and he will ask for examples. Switch to using examples and he will ask to use your own words more. Make an effective point and he will simply respond with "k". Cannot possibly recommend him.
Stokes is a great professor who is helpful and very entertaining to listen to. He is firm but fair, and will always help if you ask. Probably my favorite professor on campus.
Stokes is a great professor who is helpful and very entertaining to listen to. He is firm but fair, and will always help if you ask. I had no interest in learning anything about Anthropology, but somehow, he sparked my interest in the subject.
Ok,I barely passed this class, but it was not through the fault of Stokes. He is an excellent teacher.. He also has to be the most hilarious teacher on campus! I took this class to satisfy my transfer units but have totally become interested in this subject matter since taking this class. Great class. Take notes! Take LOTS of notes! Awesome teacher.
He should be a comedian! He's hilarious! Theres no way you can sit through one of his lectures without laughing. He adds comedy to his examples which makes them stick to your head. He provides study guides that are extremely helpful. If you cant pass his class then you are an idiot! By far, he is what a professor should be like!
Best professor at Hancock! A lot of work, but he provides class notes and study guides. Also very helpful. Take him.
Very interesting class I took the class online and all the assignments were very clear and easy to understand. He makes himself available if you have any questions and responds quickly to e-mails.
I took Stokes for both 101 and 102 in the same semester and he really helped me figure out what I wanna do in the future. I was an Anth major before taking the class and through both of the classes I learned what subfields really interest me
Hands down GREATEST teacher at Hancock. He tries to learn everyone's name in all of his classes, which is a nice change. He also makes it fun and entertaining. I rated his easiness a 3 because you HAVE to want that grade. If you don't, you won't get it. PERIOD. If you work for it, you won't be disappointed. I STRONGLY recommend this teacher.
Not sure we agree with these lop-sided ratings. Our class with Mr. Stokes was sad. We thought it was hard to take him seriously, too much immature comedy and not enough expertise. If you dig this, take him. If you want a teacher who cares less about being liked or having his own photo on this site, then you know what to do. We're just being honest.
I can't tell you what to do. Enroll with him or not. But this site is for ratings and warnings, and he's now been rated by me and you have been warned by me. Any true ACH grown-up can see this teachers' a joke. We need educational leaders here on campus not pals with little self-respect.
I took Stokes for the lab class, but had some other contact with him through a potential trip to Northern Ireland he organized last summer. He's a great professor and all around person to talk with. Those complaining about his humor obviously lack it themselves. He's funny (would you really rather a teacher not be?), approachable, and very smart!
Awesome teacher. Had him a few semesters ago. I feel like he's not getting the best credit on here. He is fairly hard as far as homework/tests, but if you study you'll do fine. He gives a lot of examples and stories.. that was the best part. He also has great humor.
Stokes is a very good Professor. The class is tough but if you follow his instruction and study then you will do great. He is very funny and has a lot of interesting stories.
The beat teacher on campus no bs with this guy if you fail it on you , he gives you the material lets use 3x5 cards on quizzes gives you a study guide for exams if you fail this class either you didn't attend class ,read ,or study and don't need be taking classes PERIOD
Do you really want to listen to the person that said "any real AHC 'grown-up'"? Brian wouldn't and that's why you should take his class. Read the book, attend class and don't be a jerk and all your problems are solved.
I think as long as you work hard/really try, ask for help when struggling, and show respect in the classroom you'll do fine. Read the book and study. He won't pass those who don't earn the grade. This is a 4-year college prep class. Good luck.
Took three classes from Stokes. He's the man. It's really not that hard to do well if you aren't a little turd. Come to class and be ready to learn. Sure, you have to work a bit for the grade, but honestly it's not that hard (and this is college.) Does a great job of really teaching the material while being engaging and entertaining. A+!
I didn't have him for the actual class, but I had him for the lab and i felt he was rude. You have to know your stuff in order to get a good grade. He was a little funny
Excellent teacher. I took 2 classes, and one lab class with him. I didn't know a lot about anthropology before and I love it now. The great thing about Stokes is that he gives students a hard time when they deserve it. If you don't do the work and goof off you don't do well, and thats how i should be. Excellent learning experiences every class.
Professor McDreamy.
I took my Anthro 101 class with him. He's engaging when he lectures, but does not put up with those who just mess around. as long as you do your work, read the book, and ask questions if you need help you will do fine in his class. you do actually earn the grade he gives you.
Stokes is a pretty chill teacher. He just lectures and answers questions. It is definitely worth taking his class. If you need help just email him, he is quite quick with his responses.
A serious challenge. That said, I learned tons from his course, even via distance education. He piles the work on (should be a 4 unit class, based on homework), but it's a pretty fascinating subject. Grades way too heavily on grammar/formatting of essays (dings you 10% if you don't number your essay answers...), but otherwise alright.
great teacher.loved this class and his teaching style.hes not easy but sure lerned alot.
You will learn so much from his class. Hes passionate and will help you if you put forward the effort. Dont mess around with Stokes. If you play by the rules, fallow the syllabus (common sense) do your work and show you have an understanding instead of just regurgitating facts you'll do great! Respect him and he'll respect you. Its a fun class.
I'm so thankful I took this class. You will learn so much, and you'll have a new insight on culture. His homework is very well laid out - it takes effort, but he's more than willing to help. Plus he's entertaining :)
Hard class with tons of homework. Yeah he is a pretty good teacher and you learn a lot but he is very serious and can sound pretty rude at times. I actually tried and I still didn't pass. The first day of class you will know if you he is the teacher for you or not.
My experience in this class wasn't very good. He embarasses his students when they try to answer questions and by the end of the class more than half have dropped and nobody speaks up. I would recommend another instructor.
Stokes is a very helpful teacher if you go to him for advice. Most people think he's rude and mean, but he just has a low tolerance for people who don't want to be in the class. If you read your text and follow in class, then you will learn enough to pass his class. I learned a lot from him even if I didn't get the grade I wanted.
This is a college class, so there is alot of homework. But if you show up to all the classes and do all the homework and quizzes you will pass.If you are having trouble then go to his office hours and you will do fine. This instructor is friendly and funny but strict. For optional pts he gives a end of semester pot luck assignment which is great.
Good luck with this one. Take everyones advice even the people who have never had him, and do not repeat DO NOT TAKE HIM. You would think at the difficulty of his "teachings" this would be a 5 unit class.
dont take him! and you will thank me later, doesnt care about your grade and deducting points has a bad rep and i should have taken everyones advice before taking his class.
Stokes is fabulous! I recommend taking any classes you can with him. If anything, it's a really interesting class and there's plenty to learn from him. Ask him questions! He always answers emails, and is a very quick grader.
Awesome teacher. Very funny keeps class entertaining. Day before test theres a potluck and u bring food for extra credit. Knows what he's talking about. Gets whole class involved in discussion and its really fun. You will need to study study study for the tests though. He emphasizes studying because he wants his students to be prepared 4 university
I took this class because it was required and didn't know what to expect. It was hard but he was funny and sets out what he expects. Don't be late or disrespectful and you will be ok. If you do the work you will get at least a B.
I loved this class! Very little outside class work. It's very interesting and seems like a lot to handle at first, but is such a great experience. Take it if you can, it's only a single unit class and so worth the time. Love Stokes!
The class itself is interesting, but he can be very rude. The class itself isn't too difficult, but just make sure to read from the book, don't simply stick to the power-points because he takes some of his questions for the quiz from the book as well.
Very hard class he grades as if it were an English class tests are hard and timed I would not takes this if you don't need it.
He's much more relaxed and easygoing in this lab vs. the lecture class. It's like a different guy teaches it. Maybe because it's a 1 unit class? Class is rowdy and group work is the the norm. A few do the work/learning, the others just copy the answers. I dreaded it for this reason. You will be handling real skulls and bones. Know your biology too.
Very interesting class, really had to work to get the B I received, Stokes is a good teacher and as long as you do your assignments and attend class every day on time you should be fine.
Don't expect to get any help if you ask - it's a huge inconvenience to him and he's rude and short. Though it was an online class, there wasn't any teaching to be had (which was why I figured I could go to him for help). I've had other online classes from professors who care and are more than willing to help. Thank God the textbook is interesting.
An excellent class, basic surveying techniques and introduction to archaeology terminology. Invaluable knowledge. Professor Stokes has some uncommon idiosyncrasies but is passionate about his field. Someone I look up to, even though I got turned down to be an anthro tutor.
Great teacher. Took the class over summer, and really enjoyed it. Fast paced, but manageable. The teacher was very helpful and explained things well. articles were interesting and chapter quizzes were moderate. i recommend the class to anyone who is looking to satisfy any elective classes.
His class is ridiculous. Very fast paced, very hard to please him, and very hard to pass. I threw all of my effort in and tried my best, only to barely make it out alive with a c.
Brian Stokes is a great teacher and really makes Cultural Anthropology a fun class, I learned so much! Be willing however to do a lot of work, you have chapter quizzes online every other week (open book) and an article review (1-2 pages) every other week. You have to work for your grade, it's a college class so that should be expected. He's fun!
Amazing teacher! I took him during Spring of 2013 for Anthropology Lab. He loves to joke around with Star Wars, which is pretty amazing because I am a Star Wars nerd myself. Advice is to go to the Zoo Trip with him when he goes that day as he is pretty funny on his commentary about the new world monkeys. I only got a B because I was lazy on onetest
Stokes is an amazing teacher. Show up t class, respect his rules, dont be a jerk, and you will get along with stokes just fine. Some of the people on here who rate him low were probably on their cell phone or came in late. Stokes is a passionate teacher with a great sense of humor but his class and learning come first. Don't be afraid!
Great teacher and great class. Stokes wants his students to be better students. Best class I’ve had at AHC so far. Secret to an A is: 1) show up 2) do the assignments on time 3) do the recommended exam prep. And if you’re looking for a course to satisfy a GE requirement, you would do well to pick this one. Definitely info/skills for the future!
All the negative reviews are 100% from people who don't put in the effort to earn an A or at least a B. Got out with an A - and I got it because I worked for it. As they say, anything WORTH having is never easy to get. Stokes and his classes are difficult if you make them to be that way. Going back for 2nds next sem.
One of the most interesting teachers I have ever had. This guy understands how to teach. I only received a B because I didn't study hard enough for the tests. Easy class if you show up, pay attention, and study!
The instructor was hard on the student, with no sympathy when he required student to be proficient in APA format before taking his class, even when the APA book was not even avialable for purchase at AHC book store.
I think he is the best teacher in the world and he might be a strict teacher but he tries his hardest and I think you SHOULD take his class you could learn a lot :)
I like Stokes because he was informal, could be funny at times, and interesting. l also liked that he was strict but a little overbearing and eccentric at times like being in the military. His pet peeves were do not use the bathroom during the class, which was kind of strange, don't click your pen, or yawn, lol. Word of advice, lighten up, dude!
Stokes, is certainly one of a kind and not necessarily in a good way. He is extremely arrogant and requires to be in control --at all times. His professionalism could use some help, from the way he presents himself all the way to his persona. I would highly recommend another instructor even if it means taking it at another school. Trust me.
Very Funny. Makes class interesting.
took stokes for lab and passed with an A. you will do group labs and a midterm and final on your own. lectures are long but you can leave after youre done with the lab. jokes a lot during class, not my cup of tea but i didnt have a problem with him. just study for the tests and youll be fine. if you put in atleast some effort you'll pass.
One of the best teachers I ever had!
This guy gets off on belittling people in class. He acts like his students are below him. He will pull out charms plow pops and throw them around the room during lecture when you answer a question correctly. I am not in grade school and felt insulted. He is sarcastic and needs to take the time to grade his papers correctly.
Good luck. Half of the class practically dropped.
The lectures are long with a lot of information so don't miss class. NO MAKE UP WORKTESTS. He is funny tho and is pretty easy going. He is not mean like some have said. Hell spend time after class to tell you your grade and what you need to do to pass. Dont miss class & do your online quizes & articles & you'll pass even if totally bomb the exams
He's an amazing teacher! His lectures were never boring, and I was immensely interested in the subject, cultural anthropology. The only problem was he was a tough grader. Even when I studied I couldn't get things right, and that's including the articles as well. I ended up dropping the class even though I loved it. My grade suffered.
My favorite professor of all times!! He's hilarious and really makes anthropology interesting! It's not an easy A though, you have to work a little for it. Literally the highlight of my week coming to his class! Make sure you keep checking Blackboard for assignment updates. You HAVE to have the book to pass.
I'm a good student, but this professor just expects a lot of work. We had to do discussions boards twice a week & because I would do them on the same say he would give half the credit. I would cite my references and he said I used to many, so I used less and then said I didn't use enough. Overall worst teach I have ever experienced, first D ever.
I took Stokes' 101 and 110 classes and got an A in both. He's a tough grader but one of the best teachers I've ever had at Hancock! Jokes a lot in class but makes sure you understand the material clearly. Grades get posted the day you turn in an assignment or take a test so there's no waiting. Responds to emails quickly. Cares about his students.
Brian Stokes is one of the best professors I have ever had in my entire life. I had him for biological and cultural anthropology and I absolutely loved both classes. He keeps lectures fun and interactive, but at the same time you are actually learning the material. He is a hard grader, but in a positive way, he wants you to actually learn.
Good teacher, plenty of work to do but helpful.
Keep in mind that anthropology isn't an easy subject. Genuinely makes the content interesting in his own, unique way. I wouldn't say that he's "condescending," but he certainly has been around and done some amazing things, and seriously knows what he's talking about. Definitely take the lab class at the same time, it'll help you fully understand.
Favorite teacher that I have had so far here. He is knowledgeable, easy to understand, and funny without being offensive. Great lectures, note-taking is a must. He made the textbook optional, and I got an A on every test without it just by studying my notes and putting in some work. 1 homework assignment each week. Not an easy A, but very feasible
Stokes is a hilarious teacher. I took his lecture (ANTH101) & lab (ANTH110) class and both classes helped me with tests and quizzes. Long lectures but he gives you everything you need to study for. And don't skip class.
Mr Stokes is a great teacher. he uses lots of real life examples to help you remember what he teaches. Dont skip class. if you cant help it he only allows 1 makeup lab thats partial credit. lectures are long followed by a group lab. if you need help you justhave to ask. theres no surprises on the tests. just study. and hes a quick and fair grader.
Stokes is an all around great teacher with a good sense of humor. The workload given is what is expected at a university level course but putting in the work effort will make you pass even if you struggle at science. Show up to class, do the work, take the notes, and ask Stokes if you need help. He will make you a better student. Tim White is GOAT.
By far the best instructor at Allan Hancock College. Truly a brilliant guy that is there to help you learn. Very down to Earth and funny and really tries to help students learn the material. One of the best teachers I've ever had.
Great teacher but you better work hard!
Anthropology in general is a difficult subject so be ready to study ALOT! Weekly homework assigned along with online quizzes are assigned. He makes the class pretty interesting and pay attention! Easy book quiz every few weeks. The exams on the other hand, are something else. Study everything! Work hard to earn the grade you want!
Only reason for high rating is Anthro majors who nuthug this guy. Everyone in real life told me to avoid like the plague. I shouldve listened. DONT RUIN YOUR GPA/TRANSCRIPT FOR AN ELECTIVE. Everyone drops it. This guy is an egomaniac/sadist. Studied my buttoff. have a mountain of notes. missed one test. NO MAKEUPS. RUN AWAY. SAVE YOURSELF.
The lectures are based on the book but he does not require it. All the information needed is in the lecture/powerpoint so it's important to take good notes and go to class. He is super clear on what he expects from you and he usually gives like one assignment a week maybe but they are relatively simple assignments. He's funny so lectures are fun.
He is such a funny teacher and he makes the class interesting. You do have to show up to take notes on his lectures and read the chapter he assigns in order to pass the weekly quiz he gives online. There are three tests and no cumulative final, as long as you take advantage of the study guide he gives you and you study it hard you'll do fine.
One of the best teachers I've had. Had a great syllabus and was always following it. SO passionate makes you want to come to class. Found him funny and easy to talk/ ask questions to. Highly recommend if interested in Anthro. Took instead of Chem/ Bio and fell in love.
I respect B. Stokes and learned so much from taking his class. He regularly stays after and talks with students who show interest and he is just a cool guy in general. I loved how he always kept the lectures fun by throwing in some comedy and he will usually crack up the entire class when he's really on his game!
First day of class he says, "Why am I here, everything you need to learn is on the internet, go figure it out." I should've known right then and there: that this wasn't going to be good class. His lectures unfortunately aren't engaging enough to want to come to class everyday, and his quizzes and exams are hard to follow. Proceed with caution.
Stokes was a pretty good teacher. He graded fast however there was a lot of work due all the time. There were three different due dates for specific assignments. Personally, I hated this part because it makes me do the work all the time, instead of when I have time.
This teacher does online classes yet does not work with his students at all. You ask him to clarify anything he refuses to answer what you asked and just tell you to read the notes he put on the side which don't clarify anything. He does not work with you on any subject gives 0's if you don't do the exact thing he wants 200 words and write 192.
If you are looking to mark off a requirement to graduate or transfer, this class is not for you. The amount of reading and work due was ridiculous for an online class. I am a straight A student and even reading all of the material, submitting every assignment, studying for tests I struggled to maintain a C. Test questions are stupid and hard grader
Really a guy that takes the time to put a profile picture? This dude is a joke. I am an engineering major not trying to know why monkeys walk the way they do. However this guy assumes every student cares about anthropology.
Stokes is one of the best professors that I've had. I wasn't excited about taking Anthropology but he made it interesting using humor and relating to the classroom. He seems to care more about developing good students than recruiting evolutionists so that was refreshing. I would highly recommend him if you are looking for a challenge.
After signing up for the class and then reading the reviews I was skeptical. Glad I stayed with it. Stokes is a great teacher and a smart guy. It's a science class so be prepared to read dry material but he makes it fun and interesting. Would take this class again. Be sure to cite your sources using APA or he'll dock points.
Grades on a curve. Answer every assignment question as completely as possible! If you are the stereotypical engineering major make sure you put in the extra time to write decent essays. The 200 word minimum for DB posts is a joke, there is no way to adequately answer all of the questions in such a short response. Learn something, take Stokes class!
Get ready to take pages and pages of notes in this once a week 3 hour lab class. Tests are very hard. Most difficult lab class I've ever taken. Emphasis on apes and skull identification/ bony traits. Do not miss 1 assignment. Anthropology 101 with him was also hard af.
This is the worst professor I've ever had. Last time I checked, it was a Anthropology class not English. The Prof. is obviously teaching the wrong subject. I didn't learn anything because I was so stressed about any grammatical errors. God forbid I cite my sources incorrectly. Don't waste your time, money, or effort on this class.
He's a tough professor. He chooses a different book each semester, then have you do 15 min. Canvas quizzes based off the readings & lecture. He goes through slides quick (take pictures). You get 3 essay Q's based off the book he chooses, & then he chooses 1 of them to take as a quiz in class. Prepare yourselves by reading the chapters ahead.
A challenging course that helped me become a better student. Stokes is a great professor and expects a lot out of you but he follows his syllabus to the tee. The exams are hard but he gives clear study guides and explicitly states what he wants out of you. He wants you to put in the work and excel. He pushes his students. His class is interesting.
I would only take this professor again because he has been one of the only few that has actually challenged me at Hancock. He is meant to be a professor at a 4 year instead of a community college. He is the perfect representation of what 4 year institutions are like. He is a challenging professor and I DO NOT recommend slacking off at all.
Great teacher for those interested in learning. This class was very educational but it does require a lot of reading, a lot of writing and a lot of learning. The professor is very knowledgeable, he gives great feedback and he is a very fair grader. I'm taking another class of his so I definitely recommend him.
Hands down the best professor I've ever had. He's tough but you'll actually learn from him.
Mr. Stokes assigns a lot of homework and you can't miss any cuz you won't be able to make up for it. His lectures are long and the course is loaded with a ton of terms that you have to know. He complains that most of the students who take the class are just there cuz they need it for their Gen Ed and he's really sarcastic. I don't recommend him.
Will make you question your intelligence. Not in a good way either.
Horrible experience and I wouldnt want anyone else to have to deal with it. He doesnt want you to succeed, passes out Ds & Fs like they are candy! I am an A/B student that got Ds and Fs on the assignments that he graded but would get Bs on tests. Very harsh & his grading system is screwed up. Save yourself, time & impact on GPA!
I actually enjoy this class & it's really not that hard just make sure you go to lecture write down your notes. They help a lot to study for exams. And Must READ chapters for the 15 question quizzes which are 20 min timed soo take your notess to! There based on lecture & chapters. He grades fairly !!
he's so very aggravating, annoying, & extremely hard this teacher sucks & I hate I'm even now as I write about him, unless you like very picky quiz questions and specific way of thinking of answering exams and essay questions. I have spent all nights preparing for exams & quiz's & trust me there's barely any breathing room when preparing for exams
An overall good teacher. The grading is pretty spread out between labs, quizzes, and tests, so even if you bomb a test you can bring up your grade with some effort, plus there's extra credit. Tests have very clear study guides to follow. Not easy, but not hard if you put in the time, do the assignments, and show up to class. Learned a lot.
I'm an older student who recently decided to pursue my degree. I found Professor Stokes very knowledgeable about Anthropology and he was available to discuss the subject before/after class and during office hours. This was a challenging class and I believe that I walked away a better student. The syllabus was clear and so was the expectation.
I have taken multiple online classes at Cuesta as a transfer student and I have taken more than a few classes at once at Cal Poly. Nothing prepared me for this guy. He is the worst teacher I have ever come across and that is saying something. There is no point taking him. You will fail. I am an A student and have a 4.0 at Cal Poly and have an F.
Way too much work for a 1 unit class.
This professor is extremely lazy. His comments on papers and quizzes are cut and paste. It is clear that he doesn't read your papers. He looks for nits with formatting and citations. I have never had a worse professor.
Took anth102 online with Stokes. Very time consuming and lots of reading for a GE class. DO NOT procrastinate in this class nor take with a busy schedule. Review your papers thoroughly before submitting. On the other hand, Stokes communicated to me very effectively. He gave me some tips on how to get an A, which I believe helped me get it.
I think this professor is just plain lazy. Or maybe he doesn't take the online version of the class seriously. The quiz questions aren't about the concepts, they're all about whether you can memorize trivia. Awful!
The best professor at Hancock. I took 3 classes with him. Hes the only professor there that will prepare you for a 4 year university. He is hilarious and really cares but you have to earn his respect. I will forever be grateful that he was my professor at Hancock. He mentored me and helped me get into UC Berkeley. Hancock is lucky to have him.
With an on-line class there is only so much you can really comment on, but from my on-line communications with him and what he presents on-line for the class, he is a really solid instructor with a really solid personality. I got a B, which he helped me to get.
If you are a student at another universityed to take this class over winter break, DON'T DO IT IF THE DATES OVERLAP your primary schooling /if you have ANY other daily commitments. There are 6 lengthy assignments each week. Very picky grader. I'm sure he's great over a semester, but this is NOT the class to take on top of anything else.
I dropped his class for a couple reasons: 1) I had too busy of a schedule to take this class 2) Brian Stokes is a poor communicator in email. He also came across like he resented my contacting him at all. I'm not sure if it's laziness (like others have said) or just burned out.
Brian Stokes develops learning and critical thinking skills in students while teaching the subject of anthropology. He's a tough grader and has zero tolerance for plagiarism. He's recommended for students who aspire to transfer to university and succeed in professional career. The courses are challenging and prepared me for graduate school.
Easy to pass if you pay attention in the class! Lots of notes but very useful for the study guides. He is pretty straight forward on what he expects. Not a lot of homework.
I took this class online for 6 weeks and I wouldn't recommend if you have a busy schedule. There's a lot of material to cover in a short amount of time. All of the week's work was due on one day so it's important to not procrastinate. He's a thorough grader but you can tell that he wants you to learn and succeed. Very friendly too!
This professor is tough, but he's very good. Provides good feedback, grades very quickly, and is very accessible. I wanted to drop the class because I was having a hard time grasping some of the concepts related to genetics. He encouraged me to stick with it, and I'm glad and grateful he did. Great online teacher.
Its imperative that you attend class as lecture notes are really important for exams and homework. Its a manageable class as long as you do the assignments and give some effort. Study guides are given for exams so as long as you study theyre not difficult. Overall, this class was interesting and entertaining and not overly hard to do well in.
He was one of the toughest instructors I've taken at Hancock. His lectures were boring and long. Only one opportunity for extra credit. His class was only based on quizzes and exams that were fill in and expected too much .
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR GENERAL ED. Ill save ya the trouble that I went through. This class is very hard and a lot of work, way too much work for a general Ed class. I bet he is a really good teacher if your major is anthropology, but if your taking this class for some easy credits I would definitely recommend not taking this class.
Don't take him unless you are actually interested in anthropology. BUT if you're genuinely interested then he will make learning fun. Do the reading and you'll pass. Expect a paper weekly with " Questions with layers like an onion"
While Stokes is a fairly good teacher, his class is EXTREMELY difficult. Theres a ton of reading and research involved, and hes a very heavy grader, especially when his course is already a particularly difficult subject. If you manage your tune properly, youll do alright. Class is pretty interesting, just incredibly difficult and time consuming.
The class wasn't hard or anything, the tests and assignments weren't particularly difficult. Definitely read the textbook in preparation and take notes in class. Because that's the only help you'll get. Stokes is not clear with his instructions and will talk in circles instead of answering directly. He accepted way too much from a 101 class.
You are going to leave this class knowing anthropology. It was a challenging class for me because it was the first time I had to do APA style essays. Grammar, biography, and citation matters!!! His online course was very organized. If you read the syllabus, you will be fine. I took this class in winter for 5 weeks, and I had 6 assignments /week.
Professor Stokes is a good teacher but you have to make sure you follow his grading criteria to a T. Make sure you do exactly what is asked of you on the assignments and you'll get an A. You don't need a textbook, just read the handouts for the mini essays and scan over the lectures before the tests. Everything was fairly easy and straight forward.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR JUST CREDIT AND GEN ED. If you are an anthro major, This maybe a good class for you, but beware- He is a really tough grader, does not have clear instructions on the work that he gives, He does not communicate good, and There is alot of work to be done in the class (so if you have a busy sched, this class is a no-no)
This was my first time having an online course, and this class was really enjoyable thanks to this professor's actual effort. Yes, there is a lot of work, but it is worth your time and is quite interesting material. Definitely would take again.
He is a not a good professor at all I have had bad professors and good professors he is terrible at giving advice and seems like he doesn't care if you pass or not. If you are taking this class for general ed don't take it!! Quizzes just see if you can memorize certain little things and don't help you learn at all. Seems like he doesn't care either
no actual effort is given in his class. Although it is very straightforward, lectures are online youtube videos and youtube documentaries. you can put in whatever want from the class just know that it's all on you and there isn't much effort put in. However if you need the class for credit reasons, its not the worst, at least its organized
I took his 8-week class. The workload is suitable for an 8-week course (a lot). He is a really tough grader. Something as simple as not having your references in alphabetical order will cause a decrease in points. He also does not accept any late work. The work is doable but if you are looking for an easy GE don't take this class.
This Anthro class changed the way I looked at Anthropology in the best way possible! If you take this class and expect to pass with an easy A, you'll fail no doubt. Brian Stokes tests you to your limit. When you're in this class you live, and breathe Anthro. If you put in full effort and time you will pass this class, and learn so much.
YOU GET OUT WHAT YOU PUT IN! Prof Stokes is a very great anthro teacher who knows what he's talking about but you do have to read the chapters along with his lectures. Fall course was 1 chapter a week, 1 quiz (15q), and 1 video response assignment. 3 Exams that are essay questions (400 words) spread out throughout the course. BUSY BUT REWARDING!
Took the 8 week course. The quizzes weren’t difficult but you do need to read the chapters and watch the lecture video every week because the quizzes are NOT on quizlet. He’s very particular in the way he grades so make sure you read every single instruction because you will lose points for wrong citations, no title, etc.
His expectations regarding citations are too high. For the exams he gives you a study guide with three essay questions and tells you two of which will be on the test and you will not have enough time and suggests to do them in advance. NONE of the questions were on the exam this class was a complete waste of time for a failing grade.
Professor Stokes is a good professor IF you are an anthro major. He grades harshly but he's very passionate about anthro. I really cared about my grade in this class, and spent hours on research for assignments just for my grade to be marked down due to the citations. He really wants you to succeed and gives great advice, though.
If you don't have a great science background this class can be somewhat difficult. Every week there is 1 quiz and 1 paper due. The paper must be properly cited in APA format. He is very accessible and gives good feedback on work. If you do the work and read the book you will definitely get a B but could most likely get an A.
Professor Stokes was a nice guy, but is very tough. He makes things pretty boring, a class that I actually was excited to take turned into a class I dreaded. I think I would've enjoyed the class if he didn't assign so much work.
The professor assigns about 30 pages from the textbook every week and a quiz to go along with it. He will then proceed to make an assignment based on a video that is nearly an hour long every-time sometimes going over 1 hour 30 mins. Homework on average takes about 3 hrs of frustration and he grades super hash terrible class.
Worst instructor I have ever had. His grading criteria is ridiculous, your grade will drop a whole letter if you don't meet his standards. Would not recommend Brian Stokes to anyone, especially if you have a hectic personal and work life. He has zero empathy, dose not accept late work, & to top it all off is horrible when it comes to communcation.
Tough but fair grader who is very strict about following proper APA guidelines. For anth102 online there is weekly reading, a multiple choice quiz, and a weekly discussion or article/video review. He tells students what is required of each assignment. Assignment feedback wasn't always clear but he did respond quickly to any questions.
Took the 5 week winter class that consisted of about 7 assignments per week which each took about 3-4 hours to complete if you watch all the videos and do the readings. The final was to answer 2 essay questions which also wasn't hard. The class was very easy and straightforward but there was a lot of work to do. Just cite in APA and you'll be ok.
I failed biological anthropology before taking cultural anthropology. All you have to do is answer each question he asks in the papers. In your answer, restate the question in an answer format to make it clear. And use real APA. He gives good feedback so apply it to your next week's assignments. To get an A, you have to be engaged, material is good
I haven't finished the course yet and honestly, I'm considering dropping it. The teacher himself expects you to know all the answers, sucks at giving feedback, be prepared to write an entire book for a DB assignment. please do yourself a favor in taking another science class before this one unless you're in the major and absolutely need it...
Stokes is not only hilarious but just wants you to get something out of the class. He puts effort into his lectures and assignments and only expects the bare minimum in return. If you are looking for an easy A, this isn't it, but if you just put in the work, you will get a good grade. He was understanding when I was sick and accepted my late work.
I took this class just to fulfil a requirement little did I know I will end up liking the whole class in general. The way that Professor Stokes organizes and leads you through the assignments was great. Professor Stokes really likes Anthro and has even rubbed it off on me as being in this class was some of the best time investigating humanities past
Anthro 102 was amazing with Professor Stokes. You can tell he is invested in these subjects a lot and he tries his best to get you involved in learning about the wonders of cultures and humans in general. The way that the class is organized is great and overall was a great class. Ofc its one of those subjects you need interests in to not get board.
Don't take this class if you need GD credits. Worst teacher i ever had. He expects you to already know the answers when it's only an INTRO class. His exams are a joke lol and expects you to finish it only in an HOUR. His whole teaching is a joke so take this class if you hate yourself lol :p
I would not recommend this class at all this professor grades HARD. He expects you to know everything and is very picky with the answers he wants. This is a hard class and the exam is a joke lol he expects you to answer two essay questions in ONE HOUR. THIS CLASS IS A JOKE do not take any of his classes. :p
Brain Stokes is the worst professor I ever took in my years at Allan Hancock. This class is a waste of time and it frustrates me that no matter how much time and effort I put in the assignments it will always be a bad score. He has zero empathy towards the students. My time with him has been horrible your grade will drop by the littlest thing.
This professor is so hard on his grading nothing is ever good enough for him. When I feel that I have done my best work I get the worst score. He expects you to know everything like this is an advanced class. He expects you to expand your explanation of an example when you've explained as much as you can. His quizzes and exams are super extreme
I already see many same experiences for Intro to Bio Anthro on here. Tough, tough grader. Stickler for citing your work (I know students hate doing this, me alike.) Fully confident I'm going to fail this class even with as much effort and time I've put in. Would not recommend... at ALL.
Brian's is awful, but I don't recommend him. He struggles to explain assignments and doesn't provide examples. What frustrated me most was my test result I put in a lot of effort, using APA citations, but still got a low score because he didn't think it was up to par. If you end up with a bad grade, it's important to speak up and argue your case!
Extremely tough grading criteria and unclear, several times marked correct on one thing then the next assignment it's wrong. Learned a lot in the class. So much work at such a difficult level will bring down even the best student. I really wanted to do anthropology and this class makes me regret it.
A ton of homework. Quizzes were difficult even for me and I think I catch on quickly onto classes. Grades pretty tough on assignments.
I was a high school student taking this class during the winter semester. I originally bombed a test and had a C but got it back up to an A by the end. He is a tough grader, and APA format is a must to pass his class, but what people say about him isn't fair. I think he was honestly not that bad and if you put effort in, you will pass.
you'll read chapters from textbook or PDFs provided, watch hour-long documentaries, take quizzes, and engage in discussion post with classmates who could care less. harsh grader, idk why he's so stringent on APA citation, like it's only good if you're going into research. he'll take points of the littlest of things. would not take this class again.
He literally just makes up ways to take points away from you
Would not take his class again, he is a hard grader on essays. The essays are also APA style so you would have to learn if you don't already know. Quiz once a week.
After reading all these reviews prior to taking this class, i was worried. TBH HE IS THE BEST. I enjoyed him. Yes, he's a tough grader, BUT, he wants you to succeed and do your best. He says this is college, do the work, show up, and you will do GREAT. Don't procrastinate, and you will pass. LOR's are a lot, but i learned to love them. Thank you!
This is a lock in class. Just lock in and you'll pass, if you want an A... extra lock in time.
He literally finds any reason to remove points off every assignment. seems like he doesn't even want you to succeed. Accused me of cheating and AI generated response when I spent hours. Class just consisted of video reviews and quizzes every week. Assignments are not hard and the curriculum is interesting but stokes made it so hard to learn.
Amazing professor, helped me figure out career opportunities in anthropology. Every component of his classes feels intentional and well-thought out. His lectures are engaging and packed with information. Quizzes aren't too bad, but longer assignments can be grueling. Overall, put in the effort and you'll be fine.
This professor was absent from most of his online class aside from the notes he would leave on your papers. Very dry and impersonal experience, he could have been replaced with ChatGPT and nobody would have noticed. Very harsh on APA style formatting.
I would not recommend taking his class. Can tell that he is very knowledgeable on the subject but expects way too much work for an intro anthropology class. Tough grader even when you follow the rubric closely. If you have any technical issues he not be understanding and won't accept the assignment. Does not reduce work load on exam weeks.
Mr.Stokes was an extremely harsh grader for no particular reason. He would give me little to no feedback for his strict grading. He knew I was a high school student taking his class and he still showed no remorse, reason, or logic; he is the first teacher I have encountered at Hancock who was so unreasonable and rude. Do not recommend.
I took this as a 4 week winter course and was thankful it was the only course I took as it required a lot of reading and study in a condensed quarter. Professor Stokes was a firm, but fair Professor and the way he graded was consistent throughout. I was challenged by his class and learned a lot.
Very hard professor, especially at an advanced rate (4 week class). Do not recommend to anyone who wants to have a winter break, otherwise you'll be sat at your computer doing homework all day just to receive a low grade on assignment you spent hours on with a few words of what was wrong. Do not recommend.
I had Mr. Stokes for ANTH103. The class was enjoyable. The textbook is online (mid-way through my course he did the shift to what will be the new textbook for future arch courses). Assignments require a decent amount of writing and you will need to use APA formatting (there are templates on google docs). You'll have no issues if you're focused!
My first class at this college, and I hate it. I'm not even done with the course, but even if I spend hours writing an assignment and follow the criteria, significant points will still be deducted. Had a former teacher proofread some assignments, and it's still not satisfying the requirements for a decent grade. A 102 class, MIND YOU.
This class felt more like a REALLY STRICT English class than a learning about anthropology class. The teacher strictly grades on your citations rather than answers. The workload is also heavy; he makes you read from the textbook and gives you an hour documentary and a whole essay to write in the second week. Btw my 2 page essay got a 8/15.
Do not take this for a filler class. Heavy workload for a class that you just take for credits, and he actually grades them - very harshly, often getting a 10-12 /15 for when you spent 2 hours or more on the assignment. Although you can't blame him, as anthropology is a dying industry, and I'm sure he is on the verge of losing his job.
Do not take this class unless you are seriously interested in the subject. Tough grader, too much to read, he expects you to do so much for an intro class lol. Worst professor I have had so far. Positives are that he grades fast and responds right away. Take another professor.
The only good thing about this class is the free online textbook.
