yeah, my writing has gotten alot better also!! whoo hoo. i feel like i learned so much than i have in high school.

Hard teacher, sometimes harsh, but he's tough love. A really great teacher who really makes you bring out the best in you. my writing has improved 10 fold, great, great, great professor!

Great Professor. The essay assignments are a bit vague @ first, but as long as you do the reading, take notes, & participate in the class disscusions, you'll do fine. The Research Project counts as much as any other paper, so it's not THAT big a deal as he makes it sound. No vocab, just sentences & a few essays. I got an A & I HATE HATE HATE Eng

I think that he's a really good teacher. The work may seem hard, but if you're willing to do the work and want to get an A, you will.

brian, he is really cool. he taught me a lot and i had fun learning.

really cool teacher and he is really nice. you can almost treat him like your friend, talk to him about anything. not much reading just papers (obviously) you have to do. research paper is about 10 pages and counts for a big chunk of your grade. i really did learn ALOT in that class.

Though I had Brian freshman year, he was a great professor. He made the class seem like it was just a group of people discussing different issues. Though there were some reading and whole lot of writing, the topics were very interesting. I learned to be open-minded in his class. I would highly suggest this prof. to freshmans who need accel eng.

Brian is an amazing teacher. I hate english and writing essays and i loveed his class. The topics he chose for our essays were extrewmely importnant and interesting and made me want to write well writen essays to get my point of view across. Good class. Worth the hard work

hes a hard grader and pretty strict about what he wants but it definitely pushes you to do better and helps you improve your writing skills ALOT.

Brian is an awesome teacher. He is very passionate about what he does, and does all he can to improve upon each and every one of his students' writing abilities. If you get the chance to, I highly recommend taking one of his classes.

I really love the way he teaches! He motivates you into wanting to learn more and to be a better writer. He is pretty tough but one important thing i learned from him is that if the work isn't hard then there is no challenge and that's true! He also connects with the class by talking to us and actually having good conversations. I totally recommend

He is a pretty good teacher. he really teaches you how to write an essay at the end of the class. he cares about the students and really tries to help you by giving you info for tutoring counseling, etc. his grading is purely on improvement. no quizzes or test but essays and projects. fun class and has a lot of humor.

He is one of the best English teachers if not the best English teacher I have ever had. Don't get me wrong, this class is challenging but is worth it and can greatly improve anyones writing if you put the effort in.

Pretty easy if you actually do the work and readings. I learned more than I did during high school. Be ready to do work and the outcome will be good.

MY BEST TEACHER EVER! Without him, the rest of my college courses would have been hell! He is a hard teacher, but you get so much out of his teaching. TAKE HIM! He's an awesome guy too! He's very intelligent and he cares about his students. I took him almost 4 years ago and every class I have I use the skills i acquired from him. Thanks Professor!

Such a great teacher! If you get placed in Eng104, DON'T GET DISCOURAGED! He really helps you to write the "perfect paper" and is extremely helpful. I always love going to this class because everyone talks in a group setting and it feels like high school again. I've learned a lot from him and I def recommend taking his class. Such a nice guy too!

he really teaches you how to write well. His class was so boring, all we would do in every class meeting was basically discuss the readings he assigns, to prepare us write the essays. he has a very high standard of grading essays. He expects everyone to speak up in class. You would not like this class if you were shy and quiet, like some students.

Hard, but best teacher i've ever had! It's amazing what he has helped me accomplish, not only with my English classes, but for every class I took after him! Passed JEPET! Thanks Professor! He is stubborn, but if i were as intelligent as him i couldn't just stay quiet when you need to be corrected. Best professor i ever had!

He is a very good professor. He has high expectations for essays, but taking his class will improve your writing. He makes appointments with you so you can ask him questions about your essay and how well you are doing in class.

Probably one of the tougher Freshman writing classes, but very useful in the longrun. Your grade is based off of your growth for 5 essays (one being a semester research paper) so you have to prove that you're a consistently good writer in order to pass the class. Although you will will be doing a lot of work in this class, it definitely pays off.

Strang is def a great teacher. I learned a lot from where I started off. I was in his remedial 104 as well, and I passed both classes with an A beause his teaching methods are def useful and effective. He's serious about the class, and if you are, you will pass and LEARN. I had him for Eng 114 and he was not only a great teacher for writing skills but he truly promoted critical thinking and pushed the class. We read many interesting articles and ended up learning about the world. To integrate writing skills with real world topics helped people care more about the class and what they were writing. I loved the class.

Amazing teacher. Learned so much from him. He challenges you, but its all to your benefit. He truly helps you improve as a writer, he is great. Highly recommend him. I wish he would teach other English courses.

An extremely helpful teacher only if you want to really learn and become a better writer. He will challenge you to the MAX and constantly keeps you thinking but it made me such a better writer. You will get the best out of this class the effort you put in.

Loved this class! He is very helpful, and has good office hours. Pushes you to really think, and forces you to understand the reading. I learned many new things as a result of this class. Overall a great teacher!

Out of all my teachers, Mr. Strang is best teacher I have ever had. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is able to take his class because he is very interesting, understands what is going on it the world and actually gets to know his students. This is by far the best class I have ever taken in school.

VERY GOOD professor. Teaches you a lot about the world and by the end of the year, about yourself. I highly recommend him to anyone who is trying to push themselves to learn college material writing. You will learn a TON after having him.

Didn't really butt-heads with this guy in the beginning. By the end of the year I gained tons of respect for Strang because he taught me so much about writing and about the world in general. The skills I learned in this class have helped me in all my classes. TAKE HIM YOU WILL LEARN A LOT!

This professor definitely helped me improve my writing skills. He's quite honest and knows exactly how to get you thinking when you're stumped. There's quite a lot of essays to write as well as a research paper for a final, but its definitely worth it. The improvements were quite apparent with each new essay I had to write.

Had him for 114 and 214. He was a great teacher and chose interesting, relevant topics. Really learned how to write with his guidelines on structure and development. I passed the JEPET and passed both classes with A's.. so that's good proof? Def would take him for any english courses.

Honestly, I thought this class was so hard. However now looking back on it, I learned so much from this class. He is a hard teacher but he really, REALLY, improves your writing skills. Also, he genuinely want his student to succeed. He looks for effort and improvement through out the semester. I finished with an A- and had alot of fun in the class.

Definitely knows how to push someone to do their best. During the first semester I was really motivated to improve my writing, but during the second semester I just lost all my energy. Loves playing devil's advocate, so be aware of that during class discussions. I ended up w/ an A both semesters.

He was extremely helpful with all of the papers we had to write throughout the semester. He was very clear about what needed to be worked on. All the papers I wrote in this class have helped a lot in my upper division classes--I still think of the methods/techniques he taught us in this class when writing.

Truly an awesome teacher. Very down to earth. This is one of my favorite classes so far as SFSU because of him. Helped me improve my writing tremendously. Our class became pretty close because of all the work and discussions we had together. I feel very lucky to have had him as a professor

Professor Strang is a great teacher!! He is a hard grader, but he definitely helped me improve with my writing. If you're finding a professor who can truly help you improve, take him. If you just want an easy class and if you're not planning on putting a lot of effort, then don't take him.

He's a great teacher, will definitely help you accomplish goals as a writer and encourage you to look past the surface. His class isn't an easy A but you do gain a lot from taking it.

hard grader but makes you an excellent writer

My favorite teacher of the semester! Though Strang can be a tough grader, he pushes you to do your very best. 5 essays are assigned throughout the semester and 3 are required to pass in order to successfully complete the course. The discussions are very interesting and eye opening. He is very helpful and understanding.

He's a really hard grader and wont really do much to help you out. Focuses more on peer editing, which gets you feedback, but doesn't exactly help you understand what he wants out of his essays. I wouldn't recommend him if you don't have a strong interest in improving your writing.

Your brain will hurt from taking his class, but you will thank him later for it because he challenges you and teaches you how to gain true writing skills. This class was worth the struggle for that A. I feel like a beast anytime I write a paper for any class now. PS: DO NOT procrastinate on the research paper!

Great teacher. Show up to class everyday and put in the effort and you will wreak the benefits from this class. Pushes and aids individuals to become stronger writers. 5 essays, sentence exercises, and a research paper on the topic of your choice from a giant pool of options he provides. Definitely recommend. Great class.

You actually have to try in this class, but it is absolutely worth it because he turns you into a great writer. No actual book, just articles that you HAVE to read and a free workbook. If you want to be a better writer, take him.

Amazing instructor, one of the best thus far. You must put in a lot of work, but you will seriously be thankful because you will develop as a writer.Highly, highly recommend Brian.

Hardest English class I've ever taken in my life and I was only a freshmen in college. My Eng 114, 214, and GWAR professors weren't even as hard as he was. Choose your professors wisely...

If you're looking to improve your writing this is definitely the teacher to take. He really cares about improving your skills and will guide you throughout each assignment. You should have no problem passing the class. 5 essays: 1 diagnostic, 1 reflecting how you improved on your writing & final is a research paper. Really recommend for freshman!

The reason this teacher is hard is because he bases an essay's grade on the lowest grade of the following 4 categories: organization, development, mechanics, and syntax. And if anyone's writing is rated below a C on those 4 categories, he or she receives no credit. As harsh as this may sound, it is actually very helpful to those who want to improve

I definitely recommend this teacher if you're looking to improve your writing skills. I definitely feel confident in my writing after taking his class. He provides the class with a workbook so you don't need to purchase some expensive textbook. Awesome!

Professor Strang is great, he is an excellent teacher and truly wants his students to learn. His class is not easy, he'll really make you work hard for a good grade. If you want an easy A, take this class with someone else. If you want to learn how to write well, take it with Strang.

I can honestly say my writing will never be the same after taking Brian, (yes we're on a first name basis, its amazing.) just kidding he introduces himself as Brian and you know right away how laid back he is. You will never get as helpful writing tips from any other teacher. If you want to improve your writing, definitely take Brian!

I really enjoyed his class, his grading is interesting but fair. You will have 5 big papers in the class. He has a great sense of humor and knows what he is talking about. There are no textbooks and you will have to actually try on his essays. Overall, if I had to take this class again, I would take it with Brian Strang.

Strang is an amazing English professor. He assures that you progress as a writer over the course of the semester. There's about 4-5 papers that each build upon each other, in terms of complexity. Take time on your research paper and manage time appropriately! His paper feedback is first intimidating, but If you intend to learn, you must take him!

Mr. Strang is a tough grader but he is always there if you need any help. I learned a lot from his class. His lectures are pretty clear. Do not miss class. Class discussions helped a lot too. Really appreciated to have that face to face discussion when essay did go well.

Brian is a great teacher and if you stick with his class and put a good amount of effort into it, you will become a great writer. He has a heavy homework load, especially towards the beginning of the year, which causes people to consider dropping, but most of it is extremely interesting. He makes you work for the grade, but in the end its worth it.

Professor Strang is really cool. My writing has improved immensely. There are about 5 essays and one final research paper. With each essay assignment there are articles that you are to read, then there is a class discussion. He really pushes you to think critically. You will have to work hard; however, it is worth it.

Really great teacher. Not a course you want to take for an easy A, but definitely worth it if you want to drastically improve your writing. He offers clear, productive feedback and respects his students as equals.

He's a good teacher, and the material isnt super difficult. Five essays total, one being a larger research project. Lets you make up for absences by telling jokes. He's really helpful if you put the time into it and tries to cater the class to what helps students improve their writing the most.

Strang is a very understanding and down to earth teacher. I improved my writing a lot in this class. There are 5 papers but they go quick. Definitely recommend him!

Really hard grader, papers take actual effort and he can tell when you didn't spend enough time on the assignment. However, he will definitely improve your writing and set you ahead of students leaving other 114 classes. Glad I had this teacher.

Trust me when I say I hated English classes before I attended this class. Brian is so inspirational and very hands on. He definitely helped me improve my writing by providing challenging activities and amazing feed back. Highly recommended!!!

Brian has turned me into a MUCH better reader. He grades tough but he is still very fair. His workbook is super helpful as well and uses it for everything. It was my go-to whenever writing essays. Overall, he is a very down to earth guy and genuinely cares for his students.

Brain was super helpful and really made me a better writer. Although he is a tough grader he is very fair and his grading system is setup so you hopefully won't fail the class . The things he teachers in the workbook are really useful and he gives good feedback on all papers.

Best english professor i ever had, i failed 214 with some other professor, she wasn't great. Strang was completely different! I actually learned! Interesting topic too!

If your writing skills are not that great and you dislike papers, prepare to suffer. This was the most stressful class I have ever taken. Nonetheless, Brian is an exceptional teacher and improvement is pretty much guaranteed.

Brian Strang, hands down, great teacher. I loved his class, it is very different from your typical English class, also cool guy. Overall, his class is not super bad. If you are not a decent writer, it will be pretty tough. Try to lead class discussions and be direct and thorough with your writing. The writing model PIE is used constantly in class.

Start on your research paper early!! DIFFICULT CLASS but amazing teacher. Not the easiest A and all the work seems intimidating at first but if u use class time wisely you'll be fine. I hated writing essays in high school because I never got passing grades, but class discussions and his articles are a big help.

Mr. Strang is an amazing professor! Has a great personality and treats each one of his students like adults. Class consists of 5-6 papers including the cumulative research paper. Rarely gives out homework and never gives out any quizzes! Must put effort into the class, as he knows when you are half-fasting things. Would recommend Strang to anyone!

Prof. Strang is by far one of the best teachers out there that actually delivers the material very well. In his class you will learn how to write good solid essays and improve your overall writing. His class is challenging and he grades hard, so you will have to dedicate yourself because this is not one of those easy GE classes.

Professor Strang is a phenomenal professor. I took his Eng. 114&214 courses and got A's in both. My writing has developed so much. He has a great personality and really trys to connect with students. This is not an "easy A" class, but your writing will improve tremendously. Highly recommend you take Strang, you wont regret it.

Brian is such a cool professor and he really does care about what you think and how you are. His class consists of 5 essays and some small homework throughout the semester. Before, writing even a 2 page essay was difficult. after taking this course, i have enough confidence in myself as a writer to come up with ideas that i would not have thought of before! Brian would always come around to check up on our progress and his methods of planning ahead for an essay helped become well prepared for an essay.

The class is challenging but if you listen to his feedback and take detailed notes during class discussions you should be fine. Make sure to start your research paper EARLY!

This was the hardest English class ever but it really makes you a better writer. There are 5 papers, one that is done throughout the semester. I would only take this class if you know your other classes will be easy, because this class has a huge workload. I learned a lot from just one semester.

I took both my first and second year English with him. His class is tough with several 6 page essays and one research paper at the end. BUT IT WAS WORTH IT. Challenge yourself. He is a fair grader and will let you rewrite for a better grade. My writing improved DRAMATICALLY. he is also really funny and in a band lol!

Definitely intimidating at first but overall chill teacher. No tests or final.. whole semester is based on essays that are spread out, so you have enough time.

But its free so no wasting money. He will talk to you about the means of holidays and their back stories. A really cool teacher tells jokes during class time!!!!

Brian's lectures were always pointed towards improving students' writing ability. There are roughly five papers, including the seven to ten page research paper at the end. The textbook is required for the minimal amount of homework he assigns, but an online version is provided for free by him. Show up and be willing to work towards improvement.

He really helped improve my writing, I am no longer afraid to write essays thanks to him. Not a lot of HW and wasn't graded on correctness. For essays he gave us plenty of time. He is the 1st English teacher I have ever liked. I highly recommend him.

Recently took his class in the fall and I have no regrets. He teaches in such a way that it actually improves your writing (if you put in the work) and the homework he assigns can sometimes seem like a lot, but in reality it's not THAT time consuming which is something he is very understanding about. I have huge respect for him, 100% recommend

Class is very straightforward and direct. He is clear with what he wants and also gives a very good job on explaining what students should do to improve their writing. Attendance is mandatory but classes aren't boring. Grading is somewhat flexible as you can redo an essay to aim for a higher grade. His 1 on 1 personal feedback is very helpful too.

He really cares about the students! he makes everything very digestible, is there when you need him, and definitely teaches you how to become a better writer.

Professor Brian is a true gem! Overall, since starting his class, I've been able to fine tune my writing. He really cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed. His feedback is invaluable and anyone could benefit from being a part of his class. He also makes it easy to do well as long as you are willing to do the work, of course. 11/10

Brian Strang is the best English professor I have ever had! He has clear grading criteria and will make sure that all his students will understand what he is saying in class. He has 5 essays and they are all clear and he provides the articles as well and encourages creativity when writing your paper. Overall, he is a good choice for freshman!

If you want to actually learn how to write I recommend taking this class, It is definitely a class you need to work for in order to get an A. Overall, the class is pretty easy there are 5 essays you do and as long as you get two As you get an A in the class. Ive learned a lot from him.

His grading structure is kinda confusing but you are essentially graded on attendance and the essays. 5 essays per semester.

Brian was a very good professor who made the class fun and gave good feedback on papers. For this class, all you really do is write papers and they had to be 5 pages if you want an A, but they weren't too bad.

Brian is an incredible teacher who will actually help you improve at writing, in ENG114 the last 2 essays had the biggest impact on your grade, but as long as you show up to class and do the work on time you will get a good grade.

Professor Strang really cares about helping students improve their writing. His clear feedback and flexible grading make the class manageable, as long as you're willing to put in the work. I found unstuck ai helpful for essay prep.

He was okay for my first year we got a week of online work every essay not too many essays if you do the work you will pass and it wasn't that difficult I would take his class again he is also very considerate if you communicate he will sympathize but overall for my freshman year I would say you should take his class.

One of the best professors I have had!! I started this class with little to no confidence in my writing but ended the class with a lot of confidence. His class was not an easy class but with enough effort, you can definitely pass with a good grade. I'd also like to suggest to stock up on the extra credits given. Very helpful towards the end!

Professor Strang is a great teacher and he really made the class feel welcoming, it was clear that his goal was to get all of his students to leave the class as better writers. Be prepared to work with others in class for peer editing, it may seem intimidating at first but it really helps. Make sure to do your assignments and readings.

I really liked his class, he was always engaging with everyone in the room and was always so positive. Yeah the work may seem confusing and hard at first but he is very understanding and as long as you speak with him and ask for help you should be okay. Also, DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!!! Totally worth it!

One essay a month. Straightforward. Gives clear explanations and help if needed. Not a hard grader. Wasn't the best at English in high school, but I passed this class with a B+.

Brian cultivates a great class atmosphere as the semester unfolds. Made lots of great acquaintances in this class. Beware, you can't escape participating! But it's definitely for the best, had many great class discussions. Grading is a bit tough, but the effort you use to put up with it pays off, I learned a lot. Friends and I would take again.

Brian is honestly such a good professor to have. He gives honest and helpful feedback. He always makes himself available when you need help and is very understanding. He loves to learn about student's interests and spark conversations. In all, just a very good Professor!

He's a good professor you can tell he cares about his students. He makes an effort to get to know everyone and he's very polite. You definitely do have to participate during class though. Class was fairly easy.
