He's a good guy. Very positive, and very clear with his expectations. He's kind of old school; you have to go to class. The subject matter is pretty boring, but he knows what he's talking about. Reading is essential.
He is a very good professor, but the tests are pretty hard. You are definitely going to have to work to pass his class. He is pretty young so he relates a lot of the material to modern day problems which helped me understand his lectures more.
Fairly good teacher, overall good guy. Asks input about tests and quizzes, and gives you a chance to ask questions the day before the test. The midterm is pretty straight forward if you study your notes and power points. However, he threw in another test halfway between the midterm and final that was a lot harder. MEMORIZE the material to be safe.
Interesting teacher that immediately responds to emails. Will help you write papers or study if you ask for help. Tests are very tough and require memorization. His class is lecture styled but he makes them very interesting. You will learn a lot from this class but do not take him if you are not prepared to do the required reading and show up.
Was my favorite professor this semester. I had him for an 8 am and he made my whole day. His test were difficult but once you figure out how to take them its an easy A. He doesn't want fluff in his papers, be to the point. He also cares about his students he gave everyone 10 points on a test that had a low average score. Best lectures very funny!
Super cool guy and really cares about what he teaches. There's a ton of reading though and his tests are super hard. There's a few papers but they aren't that bad. He likes straight to the point papers. He asks for feedback in class. He also made our final into anything of our choosing because he wanted us to pass.
Professor Swaine was a great professor to have for a pretty boring history course. He understands that very few people actually enjoy history, but tries to make it fun and relatable. Down to earth guy, gives specific feedback on what he expects. Lectures can be long but again he tries to make them interesting.
Great professor, young guy who really has a passion about history. Lectures run long but he is funny and makes them enjoyable most of the time. Tests are very difficult. They are multiple choice format with an optional essay portion. This class is not really one for the easy "A", but if you are interested in history I strongly recommend this prof.
SWAINE is Great , Best History Professor I had in school ever Personality is AMAZING He is AMAZING , He is very STRICT about attendance but its in YOUR Favor , His Lectures are lengthy and detailed , His test are 100% Straight forward , STUDY ! STUDY ! STUDY ! 3 Test , 2 quizzes & A Pretty Cool Final Project , Overall , GREAT TEACHER !!!!!!!!!
Tests are so hard, I came to class everyday and studied for hours and barely passed them. This semester it was 3 exams, multiple choice style with optional essay. 2 map quizzes that are really easy just memorize them. Final project is very open ended and at least is worth 15 percent but can be worth more.
Tests are really hard. Do not skip class. Write notes and pay attention to power points. If you love history, this is for you. If you don't love history, take another Professor. Be prepared to study really hard for the tests. 3 tests, 2 map quizzes and a final project. I would not take this class with this Professor again.
He is a great professor. He is a bro, and he wants you to pass. So far at KSU, he has been my favorite professor. Take his class.
Test are hard and his lectures are boring. If you don't enjoy history, he's not the professor for you. He talks the entire time. He gives you powerpoints to study but they're all pictures so basically your screwed. It kind of awkward because he's the only one who seems to enjoy the class. Not a mean a guy but needs to find better way to lecture.
Professor Swaine is a great guy. His lectures get kind of boring, but he tries his best to make it fun. Final project is easy because he leaves it open to interpretation. You can do anything for it. Tests weren't extremely difficult and most of the info came from PowerPoints. Overall a great class.
Great, great, great professor. One of the best I've had. He can turn a boring topic such as history into an engaging experience. One of the few classes where I actually learned something that is going to stick.
Great professor ! Test are hard, make sure you write the essays on the test
Swain is a really incredible professor. He is passionate about the stuff he teaches and it shows. He is also a funny guy, and lectures were always interesting. Downside is that its a hard class, with a lot of writing. Two papers and the tests are essay-heavy. Its a lot of work, but I would take him again in a heartbeat.
His tests are hard, and there are only three so STUDY. 2 map quizzes that are easy. Overall, a likable guy and a decent class, but is sort of an a s s if you try to communicate with him. MANDATORY ATTENDANCE. Do not miss more than twice, or he takes points off final grade.
This was an ancient Rome class - Swain is a really nice guy, a great lecturer, and has great powerpoints. There are reading quizzes, and attendance/participation matter - but this is a class you will really want to go to. He is extremely smart and a great professor. 2 tests, 1 map quiz, 2 papers, multiple reading quizzes
BSwain is by far one of my favorite professors. Attendance is a must and you won't pass if you don't show up but showing up is worth it because he really knows what he's talking about and he's pretty funny. Tests are essay heavy which makes them long burntou get a cheat sheet so it makes it easier. Would definitely take him again!
Professor Swain made history easy for me! He's really informed about this topic and loves it!
Good professor and nice guy, very easy to talk to. Attendance is mandatory however he does his best to give you all the necessary information to succeed in the class, while also doing his best to keep it entertaining. You can only miss 3 classes or he will drop you a letter grade, be wary of that. Other then that, he's a great choice.
He is tough, but Swain is a great professor. Hes very funny and makes coming to class enjoyable. The tests can be scary and the papers can be hard, but an A is not out of reach if you study and work hard.
You get very few grades but if you try you will do well. Attendance is a grade. He keeps the lectures interesting. He does a final project, not a test, and its not accumulative. I never had work outside of this class other than studying. You can make a decent grade on the tests without reading the book, but you have to have really good notes.
Great Professor! Lecture heavy with very few grades, but he is willing to help you if you talk to him outside of class.
BSwain is truly a remarkable professor. He is very knowledgeable on what he is teaching and always comes prepared for class. His lectures are note heavy so you need to go to class & his teaching style is very story-like, which makes is hard to NOT pay attention as he is very engaging. He really cares about his students. Best professor iv'e ever had
Unbelievably handsome. Funny, interesting, and caring/concerned teacher. His lectures are genuinely fascinating and if you make any effort in the class or to know him, he'll taken an interest in you. His exams are tough, but study for a few hours and you'll be fine. If you take Pre-Modern History at KSU (which you should) take it with Brian Swain.
Loved his lectures! The two quizzes he gives are easy. His tests are straight forward but a little difficult (read the textbook and study notes). Final project was a lot of work but it was fun that he let us pick whatever we wanted to do.
You really have to work for your grade. He is a fantastic professor though. He has random reading quizzes so you better do the reading. The classes are super informational. You have to write your notes from listening to him, so if you don't take good notes that way, this probably isn't the professor for you.
Funny guy, but the tests are really hard. You have to take detailed notes in class, read the book, and study for several hours if you want to make higher than a C.
Hard test and lectures are confusing. Dont take him if youre wanting an easy class
Worst professor. He told me I needed to think beyond the information given, but also told me his lectures were too original to use any other sources to help my grade. I made all A's in my classes and a C in this class. Do not take him unless you're really good at history and know beyond information that is barely taught to you
You will definitely put in more than you get out. I've taken two of his classes and done poorly in both. I've taken other history professors that require less work and came out retaining more info. He's well dressed and really funny, but he will kick you out of class if your phone is visible or makes a single sound. He made me hate ancient history.
Dr. Swain is an amazing professor! He makes history interesting, even for people who hate it. He takes attendance, so you have to go to class or you fail. His tests can be difficult, but if you show up to class and listen you'll be fine. Also, there is no cumulative final, just a final project.
This class was so very tough-- so much material to remember (especially for a maymester class), but he taught it like a beast. I think he really wants to challenge his students, but he doesn't want to see them fail/stress about it, so talk to him outside of class about questions/concerns. Sarcastic at times but really nice at the end of the day.
This was the most amazing Greek special studies class I've ever taken. The lectures are intense you have to take real notes and he will do pop quiz random on reading assignments. The papers are not too hard but the midterm and final were brutal. He knows what hes teaching! BEWARE NO CELLS OR ELSE U ARE KICKED OUT OF CLASS FOR THE DAY!!!!
I absolutely adore this professor! He is witty, intelligent, and gives incredible lectures. History was never my best subject but he makes the class interesting! This semester he decided to not require attendance but I would highly recommend attending all the classes you can as tests are lecture-based! As long as you put in the work, an A is easy!
He isn't a bad teacher but for someone who isn't great at history like me, I probably wouldn't recommend taking him. If you think you can keep up with the information and memorize all of it then you'll probably do well. He gives easy map quizzes and his tests are very lecture-based. He gives a final project where you can do whatever you want
Don't get the textbook it won't be needed trust me!!! This professor was absolutely amazing he was the first professor and probably the only one that made history INTERESTING!!!! His lectures were absolutely amazing and i wish he taught US History because i would take it with him in a heartbeat the final project you legit can do whatever you want!
It really doesnt get much better than this professor. He really cares about history and his lectures are very interesting. Easily the best professor I've had at KSU. 11/10
I took his online class and hes a very mediocre instructor. Doesnt require too much work but his exams R tough and he grades like youre a history major-TOUGH. He has this mission to make his students abstract thinkers so u better be prepared to think outside the box. He may make class appear lax and easy, it isnt. Easier Hist. Profs out there
Not a bad guy but he isn't a great professor. His exams are lockdown browser w/ webcam and he doesn't give you a study guide for them so they are hard. You have a discussion every week and the most tedious bookwork ever. Textbook work is open note but sometimes it is impossible to find the answer. His class is busywork only so find someone else.
If you take this class during the summer, let this be your only class if work as well. I took this class along with another one and I work full time. I passed the other class with a B and got a F in this class. This class has lots of work and reading. I found the test to be hard with no study guide to point you in the right direction to study.
He's the worst. Exams are lockdown w/ webcam and he doesn't give a study guide. Cengage content is designed to trick you and he doesn't care if you struggle. I emailed many times about concerns and he brushed them all off and told me to try harder. I promise you there are better professors out there. I'm an A student and he made my life way harder.
He must have changed between last semester and this semester because he was the most frustrating professor I've ever had I'm not sure what those old reviews are talking about. Cengage was expensive and confusing for everyone. His exams have no study guide. If you're a history major he's your guy but if this is for a gen ed take someone else.
So many textbook assignments each week and so much material is covered. The three exams have no study guides and way too much material to even know what to study. The two quizzes along with the exams are extremely hard and are worth a good portion of your grade. Please do not take this professor, this class is such a hassle.
I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I am a very good student and this is probably the hardest class I have ever had to take in college. The textbook assignments are insanely hard, 3 exams that are extremely challenging and are short 3-4 word questions. just do yourself a favor and do not take this class unless you don't care about making a bad grade.
Professor Swain is a funny guy that makes usual lectures pretty entertaining. There is a good bit of material but it is manageable, he does a weekly assignment called a virtual museum which is an easy A every week to boost your grade. His online book/hw is lots of reading and if you dont read it can hurt you. his tests can be difficult but study
It mightve just been an online formatting thing but you had to finish up to 5 quizzes a week along with a test. Then, you have a discussion post. The quizzes are based on the textbook but think of an ALEKS history book and thats about what it is. A lot of reading and work memory wise. The exams were pretty hard with lockdown.
Professor Swain isn't exactly amazing as his previous reviews used to state, but he is getting a bit better. He has a nice personality and is good at teaching, but his online class is a bit difficult and requires a lot of work. He only has 3 major exams, but they are a bit difficult. If you're a history major such as I am, take him!
Teacher is nice but very sarcastic. You have to work for your grade! I wish he would've made it more like a story and made it more interesting. I'm not great at history already so it was more difficult for me. Lots of quizzes and 3 Exams. Pay attention it dates and detail.
The grading criteria was three exams and a lot of quizzes. There was a quiz almost every class that was based on the readings. Some of the readings were pretty dense but it wasn't too bad. I'm not a history major and this class was not too bad. You can have a cheat sheet for the exams, which helped a lot. It was a fun class and I learned a lot.
Professor Swain's "Ancient Rome" class is one of the best classes to take. He is knowledgeable, easy-going, funny, and accessible as a teacher. When it comes to his style, expect to take notes from PowerPoint slides, lectures, and reading a lot. There are five significant assignments and reading quizzes to help boost your grade. Highly recommend.
Professor Swain is the kind of professor you want if you're a history major. He goes out of his way to make his lectures engaging and even humorous. He is kind and will always try to help a student that comes to him with a problem, especially if you're putting in effort in class. I've had three classes with him, and I'd take a fourth if I could.
One of my favorite history professors! He gives great lectures and includes anecdotes and primary sources. Gives multiple dates for papers in certain classes so you have a chance to improve your grade. Ancient Rome was great and I learned a lot. If you get a chance to take one of his upper level antiquity courses, I would highly recommend it.
The professor has a very sarcastic and funny personality. He gives multiple chances on essays, and his tests are straight from the lectures. There is a lot of reading, and there are a lot of pop quizzes based on the readings, but they are easy if you do the reading. Overall a very good professor whom I learned a lot from this semester.
Really good! He really cares about his students. His lectures are fun.
One of my favorite professors. If you do your reading and participate in class you should not have any trouble in his classes. I can't wait to take another one of his classes.
He's a good professor and definitely knows what he's talking about, but his exams are absolutely ridiculous. He gives us nothing to study and basically tells us to find key points in the reading and lectures, which just doesn't work for my learning style. But if you are a quick learner and love history, you should be fine!
Brian Swain is a complicated man- his class is very difficult, but the reason why is because he cares deeply about our understanding of history. I have to give him a high rating based on that fact. His grading is hard, but it is because he wants us to truly get how our history impacts us. Take this class to expand your worldview of history.
If you are not majoring in history do not take this professor. He takes this class so seriously and has you do a bunch of readings and assignments with minimum word counts and its all just way too difficult for a required class. The guy knows what he's talking about but if you're looking for an easy A for a required class, you wont find it here.
Swain is an incredible professor, especially if you're a history major. Don't get me wrong, he makes you work for your grade and his papers and exams are difficult, but if you put in the work I guarantee you will come out of his class truly understanding the topic. At the end of the day, Swain cares about history and he cares about his students!
One of the worst professors at KSU by far. Took him online during the covid pandemic. He rage quit a zoom class because no one answered his question quickly enough. Maybe it was a bad day for him, but very unprofessional nonetheless. I do not appreciate having to baby sit a professor.
He's an okay teacher, but his test are so so hard. It's out to get you, but they're only worth 15 points. The majority of the grade is from the online text book quizzes. He's NOT online savvy. He doesn't have due dates set up on D2L, so its easy to forget an assignment. He takes forever to grade everything.
Great professor. He provides his own lectures. The class consists of discussion posts every week and textbook quizzes. Three tests, and optional essays if you are not good at test taking to boost your grade up. If it weren't for the optional essays, my grade would not have been an A.
Professor Swain is a really wonderful professor. He does have a few pre-recorded lectures, but they're usually 10-15 minutes and there's 3-4 per module. They are also actually pretty interesting- he actually lectures, rather than just reading off of the side. Usually his PowerPoint slides are maps and pictures anyways.
Taking this as a Summer class, lots of reading so be ready for that. Tests are very annoying given there's an immense amount of information we have to study and according to him we have to "fIgUrE oUt wHaT tO sTudy" which would make sense in more straightforward but is pointless in this area of study. Besides that ok teacher
Wonderful man, thoroughly enjoyed his class
If you're not majoring in this subject, I would suggest you not take this class. He expects you to know every detail of every event and if you can't, you get a bad grade. It's really difficult to keep up with everything he gives and not feel overwhelmed. I suggest taking it if you're a major, but if not, it's best not to take his course.
If you love history you will love this class. I had so much fun listening to the lectures. They had the same level of entertainment as a Netflix show imo. They also weren't long. I took him online. We had to make a discussion post and do replies. There were also short textbook quizzes. Watch lectures and read the text. Put some effort in.
His lectures are some of the best you will hear at KSU. His lectures are worth it even if you are not a history major. He makes history come to life. He is a tough grader; however, if you listen and understand the content, you can get an A. I would highly recommend his courses.
Swain was great. Just make sure to pay attention to lectures, since his tests use specific phrases from there. Some of his questions are a bit obscure, but I have gotten good test grades on every one. Did not take very long per week to complete! He lets you work one week in advance! Tests are open for a while. No study guides tho, but good class!!!
His lectures are slow paced but are actually super interesting even though I dislike history courses. His class consists entirely of weekly textbook assignments, a weekly discussion post, two quizzes and three tests and none of it requires much effort, but you have to keep up with the due dates. Super cool guy, very direct and doesn't mess around.
Brain Swain is an amazing instructor. In his lectures, he conveys that learning is not merely knowing the course content, but the skills developed along the way. His lectures are memorable as he cracks witty jokes. The course requires effort, do not expect to slide by doing the minimum.
lots of essays, in person exams with a cheat sheet, lectures can be hard to follow sometimes but this guy has a cult following. the people who love him love him
This is the worst professor I've had questions on test have nothing to do with the chapters
Professor doesn't care if he uses technology t
Professor was horrible
He explains the notes slowly and splits them which is a good thing however when it comes to tests/exams be prepared because there is no study guide at all so you will have to create your notes. One of the quizzes had nothing to do with the module it corresponds with
He was a good professor, with good easy lectures, but the only bad thing about the class was that the exams were hard and he didn't give any study guides or quizzes to prepare for the exams.
Weekly bookwork, 2 high-value quizzes, and 3 exams. You need to stay on top of submissions and do some minor studying for the exams. Straightforward professor, 10/10 recommend it!
One of my favorite professors in terms of personality and lecture type. Absolutely amazing storyteller while keeping it educational and he is excellent about answering any questions you could have. He is a tough grader, and there's always a geography quiz at the beginning of the year, but it was some of the best in-person class time I've ever had.
exams are very heavy and he does not give a study guide or study parameters. he just tells you to guess what's important
The tests make up a majority of your grade, but are extremely hard to study for. The video lectures are actually entertaining and I do feel like I genuinely learned from them, tests suck. We also had weekly textbook work which was decently easy, but sometimes had a lot of reading. We were allowed to work a couple weeks ahead, which I recommend.
Great teacher he really cares about what he teaches and you can tell with every lecture he gives.
If you want to learn about ancient history, take Dr. Swain's class. The workload isn't easy, but he's pretty down-to-earth and wants you to succeed. He WILL teach you what you need to know for the assignments, you've just gotta put in the work to do something with it. Be prepared to do some reading in the upper-levels.
