A nice guy Period! Very helpful and understanding... hopefully he will be my instructor for 1302!!
Very nice, very helpful, very flexible with homework and assignments. Great Comp 1302 professor!
Best english prof ever ! He is totally laid back and is willing to work around your schedule. He is super helpful and an awesome guy overall ! You should totally take his class !
BEST TEACHER EVER!!MR. TATUM IS THE BEST ENGLISH TEACHER I HAD EVER HAD VERY HELPUFL, FUNNY, AND EDUCATED!! VERY CONCERNED ABOUT HIS STUDENTS!!! TAKE HIS CLASS EVERY CHANCE YOU GET YOU!!!!!
Not helpful at all. Does not proved rubric for grades to be based on. Takes of lots of points off paper for no actual reason.
great english professor! never liked english or writing until his class!! loved taking his class! I took the minimaymester but it was totally worth it!!
This class was quite intense, esp. being a two week course but the instructor made it easy by making all comfortable He is funny, firm and fair. Very helpful and understanding of each person's predicament. He is well grounded in his teachings, he is patient and always willing to go an extra mile to ensure his students succeed. Highly recommended.
Fantastic professor. His teaching ability is second to none. He is very knowledgeable & always willing to impact the knowledge to his students. Very helpful & understanding of each student's circumstance. He would go an extra mile to help his students' succeed. I would recommend him anytime.
Great professor. I would highly recommend him to anyone. He is really passionate about this subject and it reflects well in his teachings. A++
AWESOME!! Mr. Tatum is very passionate about this subject and makes it interesting. He is willing to help break things down until you understand them. Very fair with grading and testing. DEF TAKE THIS CLASS! :-)
HE IS COOL AND READY TO LISTEN IN ORDER TO HELP YOU IMPROVE. HE IS VERY GOOD
HE IMPROVED MY ENGLISH, LISTENED TO MY CHALLENGES,AND SAW TO IT THAT I BECAME BETTER. HE IS COOL. HOPE TO HAVE HIM AS MY PROFESSOR BY JANUARY.
this is a person who is actually good at what he does. yes, you have to do ur work, yes you have to try, and not its not crazy eazy but he is helpful and offers lots of do-evers on essays and extra credit. if you fail his class, its your own falt because with your work and his helpfulness the grade isnt that hard to attain in the end.hes funny too!
Tatum is AWESOME. He's super hilarious, has great taste, and sparks great discussions. I'm an English person, so I thought the essays were cake, but if you aren't skilled in formulaic writing they might be more of a challenge. Take his class if you love English. Oh, and his thesis on Dracula and the theory of relativity is WAY worth the read.
Mr. Tatum is fun, easy to understand, and just simply outstanding. He helps you every step of the way and makes things simple so that you can follow along easily. Class is both informative and fun and I wish all professors would be more like him.
He is absolutely the best teacher for english... He is so understanding and he is really helpful. His work is hard but he will help you over and over until you get it. TAKE HIM
Great professor! I took Comp I and II with him. He offers extra credits. English is my second language, and still earned A both times. Just followed his instruction and go to the writing lab if you need extra help like I did. The only bad thing I got to say about him, that he takes a while to grade papers, but I understand too many papers to grade
I have found this wintermester to be a lot of work in a short period of time. Professor Tatum has been an awesome instructor. The only thing I would recommend is the papers get graded in a timely manner. Great instructor!
I like his grading technique
Professor Tatum is a really great teacher. He is very laid back and funny. He is always willing to work with you and help you if you are struggling to understand something. He has really great class discussions and I was never bored! Your effort goes along way with him and he really takes it into consideration.
Tatum is really cool. His class is pretty chill. Just read all the short stories and take Super easy quiz for grade boosters. Only problem, his essays. its not hard, but he really critical when he grades it. i never passed any essay on the first try, but whats cool is you get to re do them for a better grade. Just fix the part where its wrong. Easy
Awes teacher.take him.i was confused in the beginning but he helped me a lot. Do the extra credit assignments, thy will help your grades
Doesnt give good instructions. Didnt know could do so much extra credit would make grade lot higher
One word describes Mr Tatum..AWESOME! He is a great professor. Always willing to help (even outside of his office hours). I loved that he gave us our final grade for his class right after taking the final exam if we wanted to know. I will be looking for him for other classes.Trust his ratings he is a great professor!
Didn't teach us how to write but graded hard on our essays. Wish I knew he lets students do as much extra credit to bump up grades high
Tatum is great. I wish I could have taken him for 1302. I already know how to write an essay and I was sure that 1301 was going to involve a lot of teaching students how to formulate an essay. We did that as a class one time. We focused more on reading and analyzing text so we had the material to write a good essay. Definitely my favorite thus far.
High recommend professor Tatum's class. I took him for 1301 and was excited (and lucky) to be able to take him again for 1302. He chooses stories that are interesting and class discussion is always fun. He is also funny and plays good music at the beginning of class. He does expect a lot out of your essays, but helps you to achieve better writing.
Took him for 1301 and will be taking him for 1302 as well. He is awesome!
Couldn't dream of a better professor. Not easy, but if you put effort you can't fail. Up there with the best professors I've had. Tests are pretty straight forward, quizzes are not bad if you read.
Pros: Allows you to do re-do work for better grade. Readings for class are interesting. Gives interesting perspective of the readings. Cons: Grades harshly on papers. Not very good on feedback. Doesn't respond to emails. Takes forever to post grades.
Do not take him online! He is the worst. Doesn't clearly explain what the assignments are about, constantly changing due dates from the syllabus, and he never goes online to check the discussion boards or to give feedback. Also, he takes forever to grade assignments and there is no feedback.
Worst online teacher. Completely absent throughout the semester. No instructions or help given whatsoever. Does not read the papers he asks us to write. No lessons/lectures given at all. No need to buy the expensive textbook: all the texts studied are available online for free. I have never had a worst teacher. Would recommend to my worst enemy.
Not very helpful.
Do not take!
Sometime you would question his teaching whether he is teaching enough compare to the other teachers. Takes forever to grade essay if ever. Go to writing lab five times a day to gain extra credit for your easy A. Take his class if you want an A but don't take it if you want to learn.
AN ACTUAL PROFESSOR. If you're truly interested in learning this professor is for you. There is a lot of work, but none to regret. All required assignments and essays TEACH you how to analyze literature/write correctly by training your brain to think abstractly about literature. Guaranteed SIGNIFICANT improvements in writing/analyzing skills.
The absolute worst online teacher I have ever had. Gave absolutely no feedback on papers or assignments, just posted grades. The grades posted are always weeks behind the assignments due date. He grades harshly, but gives no feedback on how to improve. He is about as useful as a teachers assistant. He's there to grade you, not teach you.
By far one of the worst english professors i've ever taken from. He never graded his essays on time and gave barely any feedback and was not helpful with corrections at all. He was very hard to get in contact with and would respond to emails hours or even days later. This was my first online class I ever took and it will definitely will be my last.
This instructor is firm in regards to the quality of work that he expects from his students. He is also kind, patient and very motivating. This is the instructor to have if you want to improve your writing skills. Excellent !
Overall I enjoyed the class. I read a lot of passages I had never read before, and learned a new style of writing. The only complaint is the response time of the questions posted to the professor. Most of the questions posted in the discussion board were never answered. We were left to figure things out ourselves, and hope we were correct.
You won't pass or get an A without having to live in the Writing Lab for the whole semester.
I took this class my first year in college because it was perfect for my night schedule, work mistake. He let us watch unrelatable youtube videos and made us read short stories as homework (even though he only gave us quizzes that had 10 questions). He had us write a paper and NEVER took the time to go into depth as in what he expected from us in this paper. I haven't gone to school in years so it would have been nice to know how he expected us to write this paper instead of wasting our time with these unhelpful stories and youtube videos. IF you have time to waste be my guest and take this class. You can tell that this teacher teaches this class for a paycheck and does not truly care about you benefiting and learning from him.
He is the most disorganized professor ever. I took his online class and I regretted. Syllabus changes frequently and it's not clear that what to do and where to submit for assignments. He is not helpful since there is no feedback and reply to your questions. I won't recommend to take his online class.
This teacher is horrible!!!!!!! The instructions suck, the feedback sucks! The only reason I got stuck with this professor was because our last one got sick! Ruined my perfect A! DO NOT TAKE!!!
THE CLASS ITSELF WAS INTERESTING BUT THE TEACHER IS VERY DISORGANIZED. WHENEVER HE DOES EMAIL YOU BACK HE IS NICE ABOUT IT, BUT GOODLUCK TRYING TO GET A RESPONSE OUT OF HIM. MAKE SURE YOU TEAM UP WITH A CLASSMATE SO THAT YOU GUYS CAN FIGURE IT OUT TOGETHER. IN THIS CLASS YOU PRETTY MUCH HAVE TO PLAY IT BY EAR BECAUSE THE SYLLABUS ALWAYS CHANGES AND NOTHING IS EVER CONSISTANT. IF YOU LIKE DISORGANIZATION, THIS CLASS IS FOR YOU. GOODLUCK!
I had no choice but to take him because my teacher got sick, he worst teacher I ever had is the first class I ever made a C on, provides no feedback, very disorganized and not clear on instructions.
Amazing teacher! I would choose to ignore the bad reviews. The only test there is is the final, and the quizzes are VERY easy. He is very helpful and cares a lot about his students. I would take him again if I needed another English!
Please TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Needless to say I know how to write now :) he is very very good and passionate at what he does, and cares about his students! Will be taking him again!
One of the best professors I have ever had! The essays are relatively short and easy. His grading is fair, If you at least put effort into them! You will definitely learn how to right amazing essays. I would recommend to everyone! These people obviously didn't try..
Professor Tatum always makes class fun and enjoyable. He explains the criteria clear and easy to understand! Essays aren't bad at all, they're actually kind of fun!! Everyone loved his class!! Will be taking again for next English for sure.
He took over this class because the original professor got sick. I personally found this class boring. Lectures are long, and I personally did not learn anything. Get ready to read. We read every night. There is a paper due everyday before class. Do not take during the wintermester! other than that it is an easy class if you keep up.
I love his lectures. There are a lot reflective papers to write, but they really help you to prepare for the big paper( conference paper). If you are a hard working student, you will get an A. Attendance is not mandatory I think, but his lectures are really fun and helpful. This teacher is recommended.
I took his class for TECM 2700. It was the hardest class that I've ever taken. Not necessarily because of the course content, but because of his way of teaching. He has no clear grading criteria and will never give anything above a B, even if you work really hard on that project. If you are concerned about your GPA, take some other professor.
He is a very tough grader but that is only because he knows that it will make you work harder, and when you begin to work harder your work and grade goes up. His lectures are very laid back but informational and he likes a lot of feedback.
he is so hard, i regret taking his class, the class is so bored and he did not care about the student, he is very rigid, this is the hardest class, or let me say worsted class i ever take in tcc, i finally drop the class, because he said only two people will pass in the class
He isn't a bad teacher, at first I was nervous about his class, but his lectures are very interesting, he does assign many readings, and quizzes but it's to help your grade and to keep you busy, he communicates well with our class and helps us if needed outside of class. Great Professor.
He is a great professor! He really does show that he cares for us, his students, and our future success. We did have several quizzes and writing assignments, which in the beginning might seem like a lot. But you will be surprised with yourself of how much you will be able to accomplish. Do not complain if you do not do your work, instead appreciate it. He is willing to work with you if he sees your effort. Lectures are great if you actually read, because that way you will follow with what he explains. Be ready to have your mind blown with the texts you will analyze!
Hardest TCC class ever but also completely worth the work. You will get the grade you want if you work for it.
He is an amazing teacher, he makes you work hard but helps you in any way he can! He's funny and nice and really genuine! Will definently enjoy his class.
He's very helpful when asked questions, he does do lead you all the way to you point when doing essays he gives suggestions to get you mind working. Gives off a fun environment in class and a great professor that can relate to a lot of us students.
He is an amazing Professor! In the beginning it may seem overwhelming how the syllabus looks, but honestly it is manageable. You'll for sure learn a lot and enjoy it as well. I can't emphasize enough how great of a person he is as well.
Great guy great teaching i learned more in this class than all my other english classes combined
Prof. Tatum is an amazing professor. You will learn SO MUCH in this class. By the time the class is over, your ability to communicate and write well will be hugely improved. Plus, he is so much fun and really connects with his students.
He was very cool and fun. His personality shows through his teaching and I learned the most in this class.
Great teacher
I enjoyed this professor because he always knew what he was talking about and helped the class find deeper, more meaningful ideas about many of the works we had to read. I wish I could have more professors who are as laid back as Professor Tatum. He made a painstaking course fun, and I learned how to write a research paper.
His class was super difficult. Get ready to read because you have a reading quiz at the beginning of each class period, and if you're late you get a 0! At the beginning of the semester he'll say you'll only have 2 papers to write but the truth is you're gonna have a 1000 word essay due at the end of the week. I do not recommend his class AT ALL!!!!
Terrible when reply student email
Ok so the reading is kind of brutal but if you just suffer through it you can actually participate in the entertaining lectures that he gives. Probably one of the funniest professors I've ever had. 10/10 quality guy.
yeah. tatum is lit(erature).
Hardest class I have ever taken thus far, However, I loved his class so much I would do it again. If you work hard and really engage and try in British lit you will pass. I promise. He makes you work for your grade but is also more than willing to help you out given you have put the effort in too. So far my favorite professor! He is awesome!
I reget taking this professor for a wintermister, one of the hardest professors I've taken. There's a lot of reading and writing response papers for every story. Be on time to class because there's reading quizzes each class, & if you're late you'll get a 0. A big term paper was due at end of the semester-no clear instructions & gave no feedback
Honestly, it's all perspective. If you are the type of students that "expects a organized professor" then you will fail his class. All in all, if you try, you will pass. Maybe not the grade you expect, but if you persist and work really hard for it/ have the capacity to do well, then you could get an A+. He isn't the best, BUT he understands.
So boom...I walk in on the first day and Tatum is on the table in the complete dark. He's humming along to Radiohead's "Creep" playing in the background and tells all of us to join. Strange first day but he's the coolest professor I've had on this campus for sure! Oh and you are going to work hard because of the amount of reading but you'll pass!
Tatum is a wonderful professor. I enjoyed his class very much, so much that I am going to get his face tattooed on my lower back.
I took his class in a maymester, so it was a lot of work for 15 days but I genuinely enjoyed his class. There was a lot of writing, but I felt like he really wanted us to be engaged and write about something that we were invested in so that was cool. I liked everything we read and I wish him well finishing up his PhD.
Tatum never actually taught how to be a good writer, and he just expected all of us to write perfectly.
I actually had Tatum for Comp 1 and two semesters of Brit Lit. He truly is a great professor that cares. For the term paper, he has you submit a rough draft and gives very thorough feedback to point you in the right direction. There is a quiz every class for whatever you were supposed to read, but nothing too taxing.
Every class there is a reading quiz, so make sure you read. I only sparknoted everything and mostly got 40s and 60s. There is one term paper which he gives a lot of extra credit on. There is two tests, So make sure you do well on the paper and tests since they are heavily weighted. He rarely responded to emails.
Good teacher overall, very harsh grader but tons of extra credit opportunities.
He does not help you with anything. He says that your thesis either sucks or it sucks. He wants us to write like we have a pHD in english
Dr. Tatum is overall a wonderful professor. If you arrive on time, pay attention during lecture, and turn in all essays and journals, he will make sure you pass. He is a hard grader, but it helps to prepare you for University-level work.
Great class. I loved Tatum, had him for two years. It was tough at first because I wasnt used to so much work, but im glad I had him. Im a better writer for it. There was a lot of work outside of class, but the class itself had a lot of good discussions and I really think it helped me. Im gonna miss him :(
At first I hated him, I cant lie, but its been two years and the idea that Im going to have a professor that isnt him makes me so sad. He really helped me grow as a writer and gave me a deeper understanding of the texts we read. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it.
Doctor Brian Tatum is a tough, but fair professor. I wouldn't recommend taking this class unless you are prepared to put the work in. Do not walk in the class expecting an easy pass. The main grades are the term paper, mid term exam, and the final exam. Overall, it was an experience. 8/10 would recommend.
Watched Youtube videos and heard him talk about himself, while rarely getting email responses and failing quizzes on account of being a minute late. Dr. Tatum is smart, but he's atrociously self-absorbed and disorganized. Instructions are usually not very clear and his feedback makes people feel stupid. Avoid him, unless you want to doubt college.
Dr. Tatum is really awesome. He engages each of his students in the classroom while having fun and teaching. His work is normal but you need to actually do the work and not slack off. Its easy to earn an A if you show up to class, do your work, and participate.
The extra credit is the way I passed the class
If you expect it will be a breeze, think again.
Harsh grader, he expects you to write magnificent essays but does not even elaborate how to. Only passed with extra-credit, that is the only good thing about his class. Also, he has a huge ego, because he has a "PHD" and he's a "doctor." He's not saving any lives with his grading...
never actually taught anything, just left instructions for homework, never replied emails, and expected us to write on a professional level
If he is the only professor available for teaching English then drop out of college or switch schools. His class is absolutely horrible, I got 100s on every single assignment and then when he graded my essays, I would always score poorly. Grades wrongly and has a big ego, essays are also worth over 50% of your grade so nothing else matters.
Professor Tatum is the worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. He was extremely rude, entitled, and did not seem to care whether I passed or failed his class. Many of my classmates also received failing grades. He does not care about his student's success and was unwilling to help me.
This professor does not care about the student. He doesn't answer his emails even if you email him within office hours. A majority of his instructions are unclear. He will tell you your papers suck unless you write like you have an IQ of 140. I did not learn a THING from this class. Highly DO NOT recommend this professor unless mandatory.
Toughest grader I've ever had in my life, consistent 50-70 on all essays among myself and friends. Also the essays make up 50% of your grade so if you get 100 on every other assignment besides the essays like i did you end up with a total average of 75-80% AKA C+
He is not very specific when grading papers, you will not know what you got wrong most of the time because he takes off points for the most arbitrary reasons. He doesn't teach us anything, the information given is not very useful, besides paper there is nothing else you will learn. He grades very harshly, avoid this professor at all cost.
He is a harsh grader on the essays. If you are looking for a challenge take this class.
Not necessarily a bad teacher but on essays he grades really hard. All the other assignments I got A's on but my grade suffered when he would grade my essays. Doesn't really ever explain what we're doing just sends instructions that aren't very detailed. Also doesn't really respond to emails!!
This teacher was such a pain, I had to drop it while I was passing. He waves around his PhD like he's going to get it taken away from him and in fact, cares more about his title than actually grading papers properly. I wish I had come here and read his reviews before registering for class. It's that bad. Do not take "Dr. Tatum," no matter what.
this teacher was the reason i didnt want to take another TCC english class in high school. he graded very hard, the first essay was hard to pass most got between 30-50%. He did give a few extra credit options but this class made my average go LOW.
Dr. Tatum actually tries to help students. His class is only tough if you don't try. He actually made me want to write.
Great summer class professor
Literally stupid assignments. Has readings, discussion boards, essays due every day for 5 days straight. It's ridiculous. Doesn't reply to emails, you wouldn't understand from reading class notes or textbooks. oh wait, you have a paper due every day and he doesn't read his emails everyday. You scramble to do everything on your own while cursing.
Dr. Tatum is a great professor. After you are given a project, all you do in class is sit on your computer and work on it (or don't which is what I did) and I still managed to make high B's or low A's. Make sure you turn in all your work or it will be hard to have good grades. OH! AND DON'T PLAGIARIZE BC HE WILL KNOW!!!
I have no idea what I learned. No feedbacks, grades harshly, seriously regret taking this course. He made someone who loved school to hating it. Should not be teaching.
He's an amazing teacher, he explains our assignments well and doesn't even need to teach most days because we all know what to do. Most people don't take the class seriously enough because of how laid back he is, but if you do your work when he gives you the time (which is all of the time), you easily get a 95-100 overall for the class.
Was super fun and easy. Gave out loads of extra credit, and got a 130 on my term paper.
Dr. Tatum was intimidating at the beginning, but he is easy to talk to and very reachable. VERY tough grader and he doesn't give clear feedback on essays. However, his class was fun and he is a caring professor. As long as you participate in class and discuss your ideas with him, you will do fine! Also gives extra credit.
Honestly, it is hard but if you try, you will be fine. You just have to put forth effort and actually do everything on time. Time management is very important.
This class is tough, but Dr.Tatum won't let you fail. You HAVE to read everything, and you'll need to do assignments in detail. He is a tough grader on essays but offers plenty of extra credit that'll give you a good grade. The finals are extremely easy if you study efficiently, and the class itself is enjoyable as long as you participate.
I was nervous to take him, but he really is an amazing teacher. Unfortunately, he is not just going to give you a grade just for showing up. You will have to read, and you will need the textbook if you want to not struggle. He has clear guidelines for assignments and has reasonable expectations for a college professor. Do the work? Get the grade.
pick someone else
This class requires a lot of time out of your day. I spent the whole day writing the final essays. Also, the professor's feedback is not reliable. Even if I adjust the paper to match the feedback, he counts points off on the final draft. His feedback caused my overall points to drop. Jit Trippin, respectfully.
The Professor was not good or clear at all. The professor would give you advice on how to fix your essays or thesis you would take that advice to fix your next essay or thesis. But when he grades your essays or thesis he would give you a failing grade. More than 50% of the class dropped the class. I would suggest not to take this professor at all.
Prof is off his rocker.
Professor Tatum does not teach. The class is British Literature 1, but he treats the students as if they have been studying the course material for years. If you are unable to perfectly understand old English and all of the underlying meanings in works from as early as 1400, you will not do good in this class.
I am taking this class because I have to for a requirement. I am not a literary master. Dr. Tatum has his doctorate, and that's great, but he acts like we have our own PhDs in literature. He is such a hard grader and expects you to know how to perfectly write papers. Honestly, take another teacher.
Yes, you have to read a lot, and you have notes worksheets due every week. But he is willing to help you understand the texts, and as long as you read what you can, and manage your time properly, you'll be fine. I only got a C because I was taking this course during the height of marching season. He's a very chill guy, and it really isn't that bad.
To be upfront and honest, Dr. Tatum's class is challenging. However, I am so glad that I stuck with this class. I have learned a lot and Dr. Tatum is very good at offering help when you ask for it. He is considerate of his student's needs and is very knowledgeable. He is always trying to improve his class for his students, over-all great professor.
Grading is done at a level much higher than what's typical of other professors of this course. Considering this is a core course that's required to take, if you want to learn basic college-level writing and don't want to worry about unneeded difficulty, choose a different professor.
Dr. Tatum AWESOME!! He is always willing to help if you ask. I have not had trouble with any other english class after taking him.
Worst teacher I had. Instructions are not clear and neither is the feedback given. He never writes back to comments you have to email him and wait to get a reply. He later will tell you to complete papers to MLA format but doesn't want you to have a header, meaning no name on the paper. Why?, because he wants to grade work "Anonymously".
Dr.Tatum's intro to levitating birds class is the best class I have ever taken. He is truly an amazing teacher and I have learned so much from him. As a master bird levitator, Dr. Tatum is incredibly talented and he is wonderful at sharing his knowledge and turning his students into up-and-coming bird levitators. Highly recommend.
Rate my professor would not let me speak on Tatum's levitating birds course, but it is truly the best class I have ever taken. I learned how to levitate birds and now I can't stop. There needs to be a levitating birds course 2 so that I can learn how to control my awesome powers. Wonderful, I will try to pursue a PhD in bird levitating.
He could've given me a D in the class and I would have fumed for a week, come up with vicious rebuttals to his commentary in my head, and prepare the guillotine - then he could make a single well-timed joke and I would sink into mild anger. (Just kidding. I'd still be angry, probably.) Still, he made up for the struggle by not being boring, ever.
Took in Summer II. Journals due daily, quizzes over each text, 1,000-word rough draft and paper due each week. Very tough grader considering critical analysis of literature is subjective and this is an accelerated course. Not enough time in class to break down and analyze texts. I would not have made an A without extra credit. Don't skip class.
Dr. Tatum is a good guy. I'm not here to vent, but I want to warn people against taking him for the sake of their GPA. When I set up a meeting with him to discuss the grade for my first essay, it became apparent that receiving an A is the exception in his class. I'm all for a challenge, but I would like to save my b's for when I truly deserve them.
This professor is a tough grader. He will drop your lowest grade, but I still barely passed with the extra credit assignment included. Assignment instructions are clear, and I value that he seems patient when it comes to asking questions. If asked he will give your essay feedback before it is due.
Loved this professor, helped me be very engaged in class, definitely my favorite professor. He is a tough grader but if you do what is told it is pretty easy. Lots of projects but pretty easy & i enjoyed doing them. Will help you if you have any questions. Would definitely take him again.
Dr. Tatum grades tough but fairly, and he provides lots of feedback. Getting an A wasn't that hard. You just really have to follow his instructions and use the feedback. Overall, I learned a lot.
*Edited* I had Dr. Tatum for Brit Lit in high school. Now that I am in college, everything that he teaches you is MUCH needed. It is a hard course, but it is so worth it for the future. He is absolutely hilarious and is great at teaching the levitating birds course. If you're willing to put in the work, definitely take the class.
I took this class online, and it was terrible. We are expected to read a new book/poem every other day and make meaningful questions about it. The teacher never taught us anything and expected high level writing from high school students. His grading always seemed random and either gave us vague or no feedback on our writing to improve it.
Some things you want to know about his Composition II English class. So PLEASE before you take him: - Weekly journals 300 words. - Read short story, quiz next class. - Close Reading Builders: Find implicit quotes and topics from one of these stories, and then fill out this document. Essay due next class! (He doesn't tell you how to form the essay).
Dr. Tatum seems nice, but the class is so challenging that it affects my other classes. I love my advanced/accelerated classes but this is the class for doctors, scholars, and those doing this for a job. We had three readings a week which each required two assignments to go with it. It might be an online thing but I don't like the teaching style.
Really struggled in his class. Rubrics are not clear. I'll take advice he gave me on a paper, apply it to the next paper, and end up with a worse grade. Quizzes on the texts you read every day if you're not writing a paper, and it's a zero if you're late (quizzes have a time limit of 2 minutes and they usually begin as soon as he comes into class).
This class is difficult at first but it gets easier if you stick with it. Dr. Tatum gives lots of feedback on papers. You just have to actually follow what he says. Go to the writing lab for your extra credit and you should be able to make an A.
I don't usually enjoy writing, but this class was actually fun! It was nice to be able to write about different things besides just basic essays. Definitely recommend.
I have NEVER failed a class from high school to college and this is the first class I have not passed... BEWARE... 3 total essays in the online course minimum of 1000 words. He is not a clear grader, he accuses everything of being AI-generated (don't think you're slick or you will fail). He grades very harsh/ expects a lot without any true "how-to"
This is a good class if you enjoy writing and want a professor who actually reads your papers and gives a lot of feedback. Don't try to use AI in his class, even a little bit. I had a few friends learn that lesson the hard way. If you follow the directions and feedback he gives, you should be fine.
My first impression of professor Tatum wasn't good due to some rumor I heard. However, after taking his in-person summer class I completely change my mind. He was the most awesome professor and I always feel comfortable around him, he treated his students with lots of care. His assignments are very fun and I've gain a lot of new knowledge.
Dr. Tatum's class is pretty tough. The directions are not always clear and he grades really tough. The problem is not that he grades tough. For how tough he grades, he does gives little to no feedback. If he does provide feedback, and you apply that to the next assignment then it is still wrong. If you want to maintain a higher GPA do not take this
He is very cool. He doesn't weight his assignments too much so if you fail one, it wont damage your grade too much.
Dr. Tatum is a cool dude, every assignment is weighted fairly so if you fail one assignment you won't fail the course. I really like his humor and that he tries to make the class fun. The class overall is fun and encourages you to keep up with assignments. He is also fair to everyone and does not have favorites.
This professor is so difficult to work with. Nothing was good enough and they had assignments constantly. Composition 2 should not be this difficult.
Professor Tatum is a tough grader, but fair. The class is challenging, but engaging. Using unstuckstudy along with the textbook helped me stay on top of the workload. Would take again.
The workload is very feast or famine, the reading can be too much. It's hard to fix bad grades without a meeting. If you want an A, its up to luck only as EC doesn't help at all. The professor put out an announcement over the major paper, altering stuff, 12 hours before it was due-it was Saturday. He's a brutal/nit-picky grader with vague feedback.
Took this class for Comp 1 dual credit and the professor was strict with grading and also gave a lot of work and was also funny. He also responded and graded mostly on time and doesn't do favorites.
Cool and fun professor. Very practical assignments, had a good English 1301 semester with him. Would recommend!
as a duel credit student i couldnt breath at the beggining of his class it got better at the end, he is a funny guy but he grades so hard, i barley had a life outside of his class when taking him, i some how passed with a 81 after many hours working on projects, i balanced sports and a job too go for it if u want to but u have been warned!!!
2 quizzes a week plus a DB. The readings had to be understood on our own. There are 2 papers, mid term and final exam. He does give an extra credit opportunity. Grades quite harshly and takes points off if your interpretation of the text doesn't match his. He responds to emails when he wants to. Puts everything thru AI Checker/ very strict abt it.
If my rating was based off of Dr. Tatum as a person he would receive a lot of positive feedback but online classes don't suit him. It is a lot of reading and learning on your own. I recommend you meet with him in person at TCC to get feedback. If you put in effort to meet with him and interact, he rewards students who are hardworking and care.
Spent most of class talking about himself, spent the rest of it being condescending. Grades harshly, but not fairly. Assignments and reading didn't teach me much, felt like a waste of time taking the class.
Had this professor for Brit Lit, but more notably, Intro to Levitating Birds. I was able to set up very well for my future levitation classes. Dr. Tatum specializes in the levitation of birds, so it was a great experience to have a professor who exercises his skills very often. I now levitate many birds, and get praised for my consistency.
I had Dr. Tatum for Comp II as a dual credit student. He's a very nice guy and chill professor, and I learned a lot of new things in his class. It was definitely different than the writing I was used to, so be adaptable if you're taking his class. Tough grader but gives lots of extra credit so if you work hard you can definitely make a good grade.
I would not recommend taking any course from Brian Tatum. His criteria for discussion boards were not clear. His grading was harsh and unjust. The assignments were not helpful and were dreadful.
Very difficult class to get used to in the beginning, with many readings that are difficult to understand. Dr. Tatum grades harshly on discussion boards, and does not provide much feedback to help you do better. The quizzes are random and ask for minor details instead of actual comprehension. Taking this class felt like I had no life outside of it.
Dr. Tatum is a very knowledgeable English teacher, that genuinely cares about his students and how they perform in the class. That being said he is a very fair teacher, he doesn't show any bias towards any student. He is also incredibly well versed in the realm of levitating birds, and never refuses to share his expansive knowledge on the topic.
Since I was a kid, my aspiration was to work at the State Fair and deep fry food all day long. I didn't know where to start, but Dr. Tatum's deep frying class helped me to start so much. From deep frying fanta to extinguishing small fires, I gained a great baseline of how to start my dream from his class.
We started in English then found our way into the secret elite class of deep frying 101. We learned how to fry many things and also how to levitate butter. Most work is done at home and to do well in the class you have to ask about frying fanta first There is lots of extra credit opportunity. My cholesterol level was my grade, pretty high. have fun
After English Comp I got to take Levitating Birds class. After I learned how to levitate, I got to take Deep Frying class. We learned how to fry Fanta, butter, and many other things. For our final we got to fry coq au vin! Make sure to get your doctor's approval before eating anything. I ended up in the hospital, but it's okay because I got an A+!
It was incredible to learn under the greatest deep fryer to walk the TCC halls, being Dr.Tatum. I was able to gather the skills necessary to pursue my dream of becoming the world's best oil levitater. Now, my arteries may be incredibly clogged now, but I did achieve the grade I wanted. My deep fried Pepsi Lite earned me a great grade in this course
