Best damn teacher at UVSC. This guy mad a boring class fun. Every class was a debate with only a few papers that were graded fairly to be written. Fun class.

Professor Whaley is the best English teacher I have ever had! He is so helpful and I love going to class. We pretty much discuss "hot issues" in the world to learn how to argue effectively. Take this from him for sure!

Brian is a good teacher. but if you don't like poetry, i wouldn't admit it in class becasue he really loves the stuff. He is really smart, and is also really funny when he gets flustered.

Best english teacher I have ever had! I retook this class to get a better grade, I learned more in his summer class then sitting in a semester class with different teacher.

I was so scared to take this class. But I was so glad that I took it from him. He gives really helpful comments on your papers, and is really understanding with situations that come up.

Great teacher, loves to talk with his students, not just at them as many tend to do. He is always willing to talk about interesting topics, and he is honest with his students.

He is an interesting person. He tries to involve students and has a sense of humor about things. He can be hard on grading papers, but once you get used to what he wants it is fairly easy to do well. Most of my problem with this class was the material he chose to use. I didn't enjoy a few of the books we read.

Fantastic. The most genuine teacher at UVSC. Cares most about the students and hopes that they learn and enjoy at the same time. i went to his office for help, which i don't usually do, and he was extremely understanding and helpful. very reasonable in grading and assignments. i look forward to going to his class each day.

What a kind teacher that really knows his stuff. He is respectful and truly interested in student participation. He is a tough grader on papers but there are only four. You do have to show up for class but it's worth it, he has a good sense of humor. He gives praise where it is due and helps where you are lacking. Take his class when you can

One of the best teachers if not the best I've taken at Uvsc. He keeps the whole class involved, and I loved the discussions we held in class. He doesn't cram you with a ton of work and gives you time to finish assignments. I learned a ton in this class and I hate to write!

Awesome guy! He's very kind and one of the nicest professors at UVSC. He lectures and his voice is very soft and will make you want to sleep. You have to read a lot of books. I read two out of 10, attended class, wrote somewhat intelligent papers, bombed the final (it's extremely hard!) and somehow got a B+. He's an awesome guy, though!

He was the best teacher that I have had thus far into college. If you want to have a teacher that really cares and wants to make an impact then take his class. I liked him so much that I am taking a class again from him this semester. A lot of work, but he is fair and fun.

Incredible teacher. Extremely helpful and understanding to everyones needs as an individual. Loved his class and him. He is so open minded and understands that everyone has a difference of opinion. That helps when writing opinionated papers. I highly recommend him.

Professor Whaley was an amazing teacher. I hated English before I took his class, but he kept it easy and interesting. We used the book a couple times and mostly watched documentaries and discussed the issues in class. He was always offering help and wanted us to get the best grade possible. Very open-minded. Professor Whaley is amazing! In Eng1010 I received a B on every paper, but in Professor Whaley's class he has truly helped me to succeed (A's on every paper!) The thing I love about him is that he TRULY cares. If you try your best he will help you. He comments on your papers so you can improve. Believe me when I say- TAKE THIS CLASS!

Brian Whaley is one of the best teachers here at UVU! He is funny and his expectations are easy to understand. I didn't really like my experiance with english 1010 but I loved this class. Brain made my semester more enjoyable than it would have been if I took english from anyone else, I'm sure of it!

Professor Whaley is the best teacher by far at UVU. He is caring and understanding and really wants you to succeed. His clear passion for what he teaches makes it easier to follow what he says and definately makes it more interesting. He will stop and make things clear if you don't understand. He was the most amazing teacher ever. He understood when I was sick. He cared and took notice when I wasn't in class. He made sure I had a firm grim on what I was doing. He was a great friend to me. He has what the rest lack--compassion. His class wasn't easy but he made it worth it. I enjoyed him completely.

This was the best class I have taken so far! Class discussions were always interesting, and really got you thinking. I learned a lot from him and I think he is one of the best professors UVU has to offer!

One of my favorite teachers I've had! He knows his material well and is clear when telling you what he wants in your papers. He checks attendance every day so make sure you're there. Classes were fun and discussions were very helpful. journal entries weekly and a 3 to 4 page paper almost weekly as well.

Professor Whaley is very respectful, and makes sure that no one feels stupid. He is willing to regrade papers after talking with him and to read papers before they are due. The only negative thing is that he has a soft voice and sometimes it is hard to hear, but other than that take him, he is just a wonderful man.

Dr. Whaley is the nicest man in the world! He is pretty much the only professor at UVU who actually cares about his students and the subject he teaches. Lots of reading, but fun class discussions. Only two assignments and a simple final exam for lit classes. Totally worth it! I would take every class from Brian if I could!

Prof. Whaley is awesome. He is smart and really wants his students to do well. He expects a lot of you but gives you as much help as you need to succeed. His papers are fun to write bc they are not your typical paper. This is the best ENGL 2010 class at UVU.

The class was pretty hard, but Brian is really helpful. He is more than happy to clarify if you have questions, or to guide you through your drafts of papers. His language is pretty technical and sometimes gets hard to follow, but he clarifies if you need it. Two tests (easy) and lots of papers.I would definitely take from him again.

I loved this teacher. I loved the papers we wrote because I could use my life and tie it into our essays. We write a rough draft and have a day to fix it and turn in the final copy for credit. He makes the class interesting. I recommend him!!

One of the best professors I have had. He is extremely helpful and he really wants you to succeed in his class. I had some unfortunate medical issues come up and he was more than willing to work with me. There are quite a bit of papers to write but it's to be expected of an english class. I would definitely recommend this class.

The papers overall are easy to write, you can really relate your life to them so it makes it easier and more enjoyable. You turn in a rough draft first and he'll really work with you to make the second version better. I feel like I have better writing skills because of this class.

Professor Whaley inspired me to think critically about reading and writing. He encourages you to write expressively, to go beyond the standard essay in both form and substance. Everyone is encouraged to participate in class discussions. He grades fairly, offers useful criticism, praises good work and remembers what you wrote. Highly recommended.

Great teacher and pretty easy class (compared to other 2010 classes). Nine 3 page essays... nothing too crazy. A lot of discussing. I recommend buying the text book but I got by without it using the internet and library resources. He is understanding of student situations and is willing to work with you. Wants students to succeed.

I have been at UVU for years, and out of all my professors, Whaley has been my favorite. He makes class interesting and allows freedom when it comes to writing. You are constantly writing in this class, but he encourages you to think deeply & experiment with different writing styles. He is amazing and allows the writer to express himself freely

World Lit. Emphasis changes every semester it is offered (mine was 19th century russian lit) EXCELLENT PROFESSOR! I'm not an English major so I felt a little in over my head, but he was way helpful and clear and I'm doing great! Wants you to succeed! LOTS of reading. 2 papers and a final. attendance mandatory. Discussion/participation based.

One of the first things you will notice is his soft, soothing voice. Professor Whaley is intelligent, very funny, and extremely kind. Class is discussion based, though he does fine without class participation. You will love his class.

AMAZING! He makes British Literature come to life. His voice pulls ou into the conversation rather than put you to sleep like most professors who rely on lecture. My only complaint is that your grade gets dinged for poor attendence.

My favorite teacher I've had at UVU yet. Smart guy, super nice. Class is great - we read awesome poems by great authors and discuss them in class. One paper, one final. He walks you through the paper, too, so it's totally do-able. Great class - great professor!

He is amazing! He helped me so much to understand readings in ways I never would have on my own. He really takes his time to push your own ideas to their limit, and help you open up your thinking to new levels. I haven't never read or written so well after working with him. I really can't say enough good things. Great experience.

This was a great course. You need to be to class for class discussion- although if you're one of those quiet people who doesn't say much you can just send him an email with a thought so he knows you were there physically & mentally. He's really cool. There were only a few papers- he expected good quality, but willing to help. Reading is a must.

He is super understanding and helpful. His classes were all discussion based. He is open to everyone's ideas and likes to hear from everyone. For an english class it was very different than I've had in the past. He does not pound grammer rules intom you, but more helps to shape ideas and thoughts, in a way that is not always typical. Great guy

Whaley was awesome! He's super friendly, very easy to understand and welcomes any comments or opinions on the texts. He's very excited about what he teaches and wants to help you pass the class! Class was mandatory, but it makes sense because a portion of your grade is based off attendance and participation.

This class was awesome, which surprised me. I HATE english classes, but I really enjoyed this one. It is discussion based, and he really focuses on creativity and shaping ideas vs busy work with writing tons of papers. I even enjoyed writing the response papers. Impressed with his method of teaching.

I worked my schedule so I could take ENGL 2010 from Prof. Whaley (based on his reviews)and I'm glad I did! There are 3 essay assignments & a final paper. A lot of the grade is based on participating in discussions (so plan to attend). I highly recommend his class. The 1st assignment was really interesting (and got me published)! Thanks Prof!

Honestly he is great as a person but as a teacher he has some problems. He talks really softly, which for me personally was just hard to follow. Also, the grade in the class is based on very few things - participation, attendance, a paper, a midterm, and a final. He is very helpful and knowledgable though.

Very impressed, awesome teacher. Expects you to be in class every time but is chill with your writing style and writing skill, whatever it may be. I would definitely take him for the rest of my college career if I could. Don't consider anyone else!

Brian is wonderful! Very passionate about subject & kind. He explains in depth his expectations and how to develop your writing skills & explore different styles of writing. There are 4-5/2-3 pg essays & an 8-10 p final research paper. The second half of the semester is essentially optional. He does like to meet for a progress check on final.

Brian is an EXCELLENT professor. He does speak uber soft, so sit close. I can't think of a finer gentlemen, nor a better literature teacher.

Professor Whaley was an amazing professor, I learned so much from this guy and he is hilarious which doesn't hurt either. Such an easy going professor, and would bend over backwards to help a student out. Super understanding of real life issues and is super flexible for that. I would recommend him to anyone I know.

I signed up for this class and was nervous initially because of all the books we would read throughout the semester. But honestly, he is an amazing teacher! His lectures are outstanding and he doesn't want to trip you up on tests- he WANTS you to succeed. GO TO CLASS because the in class discussion will save you for the tests and paper!

Professor Whaley is the best professor I have had in my experience at UVU! There is something about his manner that is so friendly, his class is more like a book club than an actual required class! There aren't very many tests and his grades fairly easy on them!

Prof Whaley is very soft spoken, it's easy to fall asleep in class. However, he's super laid back, and one of the nicest Professors at the school. His writing style is very free, so you don't have to worry about changing your writing to fit him. You'll write 3 2pg papers and a final 8pg paper, plus lots of readings.

Professor Whaley is excellent! He is so respectful of his students and pays close attention to each comment or question that is made. Participation is very important but he helps create a comfortable environment even for the shy students. This was the first English class that I have enjoyed and I would definitely recommend taking from him!

Brian is a wonderful prof, we had a 2 page paper due every week, but nothing to hard. As long as you do the readings, show up to class, and participate once in awhile, it will be an easy class. Summer class with him was a great choice!

What an incredible class! Best English class ever! I've never looked forward to English classes before - I'm nowhere near an English major either. I found myself looking forward to class because of the discussions he put on. Very fair grader! Not incredibly difficult, but you'll still learn!

He's one of the best professors, if not the best, I've ever had. He's focused and so prepared, and he respects everyone. You have to do all the reading and he assigns a handful of smaller papersbut nothing impossibily hard. He's great and so is his class!

Brain Is such a good guy, most caring teacher I'v ever had. Four 2 page papers, One 8 Page paper. I love his teaching style because he has you read about current hot topics, then gives you the freedom to wright about whatever you want within the topic, If you go to class and participate and do the papers you will do well in the class.

Professor Whaley is honestly one of my favorite teachers that I have had. You can tell that he is very enthusiastic about what he teaches, which makes his lectures so much more interesting. I shouldn't even say lectures because he is very focused on having the entire class participate. He is a very kind teacher, and 100% I would take him again.

He's a really great and relatable professor. But if you don't like sitting up in the first few rows of a class, don't take him. He's really soft-spoken and at times it's hard to hear him. Also get ready to participate, class time is fully dedicated to discussion and if you aren't going to participate, might as well not show up at all.

Awesome professor!!! Do yourself a favor and get to know him within the first week of class and he'll be your best friend. He made tough readings easy to understand and is very lenient when life gets in the way. Understanding guy and I would definately recommend him to everyone.

Best Teacher Ever! Whaley is a really great guy. He cares about his students and will bed over backwards to help them succeed. He is a quiet guy, so you need to listen and pay attention to hear his lectures, but if you have a question, he is happy to repeat himself or clarify something. Participation is also mandatory in his class.

Whaley is super nice and tries to make the lectures and discussions not drag on. Always willing to help outside of class. Most days are spent discussing the reading, but he gave us an option to email him a comment for the week instead of speaking in class, which was really nice. Class overall was not too difficult, tests were easy if you studied.

One of the best professors in the English department. He gives fantastic lectures and really loves the subject matter. He enables a good group discussion that engages everyone in the class. I would recommend this professor to everyone.

This class was amazing. We read a lot of books (mostly novels). Even when the book was something I didn't care for, I loved hearing Prof. Whaley's thoughts and interpretations of the works. He was excellent at hearing ideas and getting good discussions going. I would honestly pay to continue with some sort of book club led by this amazing man.

This is the best teacher I've ever had! He gives amazing feedback, is so understanding, and passionate about what he teaches. This class is easy, yet very educational if you apply yourself. I gained a deep love and appreciation for poetry and the classics through this class. You simply have to take him to understand how amazing he is.

I cannot say enough positive things about Professor Whaley, he is the type of professor that makes you want to become a teacher yourself. You can tell how passionate he is about his job and the students, he makes the literature interesting. Listening to him recite 'The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock' is one of my favorite memories from this class.

I have never had so much fun reading poetry/short stories. Professor Whaley's way of teaching is really good. As long as you participate and do the readings you'll pass with no problems. His lectures are inspiring and thought-provoking. I definitely feel as though I learned something I will take with me outside of his class. I highly recommend.

Amazing class! The teacher clearly knew the material extremely well and was amazing at guiding discussions. He helped me understand and genuinely enjoy Shakespeare even more. Picked great texts for every era, an easy class if you read and show up. Graded on monthly reflections and final presentation. Rare reading quizz. You don't want to miss this professor.

If you have the opportunity to take ENGL2870 with Prof. Whaley, seize it! His syllabus and readings were pure perfection. He makes everyone's thoughts and ideas feel important and substantial. Class is a discussion, not a lecture. Readings are super manageable and so fun. Truly one of the best professors I've ever had.
