Very short temper, unwilling to help students outside of class. Class does not prepare students for higher biology courses.
He is a great teacher but dismal in any help outside of the classroom. He considers a "B" student as simply "satisfactory."
His research with modern viruses(ie HIV), and cancer, is at least 5 or more years out of date. Even though I found the course relatively easy, your best bet for help is from his many TA's. He doesn't entertain students outside the classroom well.
Brian White is an incredible professor! He gives you everything you need to get an A in his course. Whether or not you choose to take it is your problem. He's always been supremely available for help and, come on...his research revolves around how to teach kids biology!
He helped me understand that I really didn't want that biology degree I had always dreamed of. No help at all outside of the classroom. Very self-important but his only lasting impact was on my GPA.
it was a nice class, just sitting there editting the notebook that he wrote for us. one cheat-sheet per exam, and 2 cheatcheats for the final, how much more spoon feeding do you need, but it was a hard class and getting the "A" is different than getting a lazy sleepy B+
Very helpful professor. He does a tremendous job in clarifying concepts. I don't know why other people bash this professor. He makes himself very available for help out side of class.
He is not helpfull at all. He don't have time for students. But very easy class if you ready your notes. He gives you everything you need to ger an A. But really boring because you have to edit the lecture notes that what you will do all day.
Good prof. Even though he hand feeds you everything you'd need for an A, you have to work your ass off to get it sometimes, especially in lab.
He was very helpful and accessible to the female students; good luck if you are a male student.

Brian White may be the best teacher ever. If you go to lecture, you can easily get an A. I'm a senior expecting to get a BS in biology in the spring and I have found that of all the upper level classes I have taken (7) in bio all lead back to bio 111. Because Brian taught the class well, it has made the rest of my upper level classes much easier
somewhat pompous and arrogant. he only dedicates time to you if you're a bio major. don't look for help if you're just trying to fulfill a gen ed requirement.
his very helpful and his an awesome guy. it's a pleasure to have him as a professor

Tests are completely from lecture. You get to make a cheat sheet to take into the test. So you get to learn and get a good grade on your tests. What else could you ask for?
This guy is great and the course is really interesting. His approach to teaching science makes it understandable even for non-science types. Go to class and lab you'll do fine, but expect a lot of work. Course is very well-organized and has a terrific website with lots of helpful material and computer programs for use at home.
Professor White teaches science in a way that helps people think about it for themseleves instead of just memorizing facts. His exams are difficult, but you will get a lot out of them.
One of the best teachers I've had. Crystal clear explanations of every concept, pre-written notes you can buy at the copy center. Great office hours, and friendly. Allows a cheat sheet to every exam. Only catch: all exams are essay form, which may or may not be a problem. Recommend taking 112 before anatomy; it helps alot!
Great teacher. Exams are not tht hard. You must study if youw want to pass. Go to all lectures and labs to get a better understanding of material even if you have the notes for the lectures. Prassede is the best TA in Bio.
pretty interesting and easy....
Great guy. Tough tests because they are all essays and he gives trick questions. Really hard for foreign students with English speaking problems but he is a great guy and knows his material.
You never feel like you have to look over the notes because you always understand it the first time. never study for his test or go over my notes yet I learn the most from this class just from making the cheatsheet the night before. Sometimes I end up pulling an all nighter to make the cheatsheet but I am forced to understand it. Very good notes.
Definetly one of the most helpful teachers I've ever had. He is really easy to understand, take his job seriously, and makes difficult concepts make sense without trying. I barely studied for this class, not because the material was easy, but because he made it understandable. TAKE HIS CLASSES, you won't regret it!
For Bio 111 this was a good class, you will do fine if you study for your exams and go to lecture. Beware though, if you have Alex T for a TA in lab, I would suggest you switch to a different lab section immediately!
this class was very interesting. brian is a really good professor and he cares about teaching alot. he goes over things and always leaves room for questions. he uploads his lectures on the website for review and studying. just go to lectures!
In Introductory Bio, White spoonfeeds/oversimplifies all the information. His teaching models for biological processes are so simplified that they can become unclear; certainly he occasionally confuses opposites during lecture. You can tell he's not really thinking about what he's saying, just reciting the lectures he's been giving for years.
The Best Teacher I've have so far in college. His leacture is clear and helpful. if you go to his class and pay attention to his notes you dont even need the book to pass. He encourage you to ask questions and cares a lot about his student.
Prof. White is very good at teaching is very organized but just a warning his exams are very hard and even tricker. So be careful!
A really great teacher, he knows his stuff and more importantly how to teach it to you. The only problem is if you are self diagnosed ADD his classes are not for you, sometimes with upward of 300+ people in lecture.
The best!
He is such a great teacher and knows exactly what he is talking about! If you attend every lecture then you will not need to use your book because I never used it and still passed the class. The book is basically for reference. The test are basically on the notes so if you go to lecture and study your notes you will do great.
As the other comments say, Professor White is one of the better professors at the University and one of the best I have ever had in my scholastic career. Kudos to him for having such a fun and engaging class and unlike some other professors, finding a way to make it informative too!
Professor White is the best professor out of all of the professors I have had in general. He's # 1. He was very passionate about his subject and that makes a difference.
I would not recommend this professor. He is one of the worst professors I've ever had! No help from him What So Ever!!!

white is one of the best profs @ umass boston. His research is on education so he knows what he is doing!!
REALLY WANTS HIS STUs TO LEARN! NOTES/HANDOUTS/AUDIO FROM LECTURE ONLINE. PLENTY OF CHANCES TO GET EXTRA 10PTS FROM SURVEYS. 3 TESTS, 1 FINAL. DROPS LOWEST GRADE. DOESN'T ACCEPT ANYTHING LATE, WHICH IS FAIR IN A WAY. 2 ICLICKER QUESTIONS FOR AN EXTRA POINT/LECTURE. PAST EXAMS USED AS STUDY GUIDES. 1 CHEAT SHEET PER EXAM, 4 CHEAT SHEETS FOR FINAL.
Great professor, I mean you have to try hard not to get an A in his class. He explains things very well, students can use cheat sheets on the exams, and there are tons of ways to score points. A very student-friendly teacher and course. You'd be crazy not to take this class.
He's not a nice prof.
AMAZING
Awesome guy. He teaches everything so simplistically. I would recommend him to anyone. It is really hard to do bad in this class. He tells you the exact pages to read before lecture and there are not that many of them! I can't wait to take Bio 112 with him.
i love this man, he is the one if the best teachers i have ever had
He really is amazing!!
He's a good teacher. The only thing is that he doesn't care if you have been in the hospital and missed Labs.
He's a cool guy. lectures were interesting but labs were dull. study all the notes, not so much the book.
Amazing prof. really wants his students to do well. Labs are rather dull and could use a revamp. Study all of the notes as his exams are not multiple choice and at times can be challenging even with the cheat sheet he allows. Wish he taught more Bio classes. Highly Recommend!
Prof. White is amazing!! His class isnt based off memorizing things. He makes u understand so u can apply the things he teaches. If you pay attention in class and go to labs his tests are easy. I didnt even use the book for the class and I got a B. Just pay attention and take notes in class and go to labs and you will be all set.
He really give you every chance to pass with handouts and class lecture notes from previous classes. His tests can be difficult and some you will have to cram for if you werent present at lecture but all in all hes pretty good.
Great teacher.....not easy but very elaborate and organized!!!
I entered the class without any real interest in biology. I barely remembered anything from high school biology, but Prf. White made this class not only incredibly easy to understand, but incredibly interesting as well. Very dedicated to students and will always put in the effort to help you understand the material as long as you do your work.
Brian White is easily the most dedicated professor i have met thus far. You can tell Biology is his life and he loves to help anybody who wants it. Prior to this class i had no interest in Biology. now i am thinking of majoring in Biology
I can see why people like him. Which I agree, his lecture and class alone will get you by with a pretty decent grade. But he is an illogical and very very very unreasonable when it comes to retake his exams and dr. Jekyll and mr Hyde outside his class room. Not the same attentions and person for that matter outside his lecture. C- for him.
A great teacher who will help you learn tons of new stuff. His teaching material is very well organized so as long as you do your work, you'll be rewarded with a good grade. Students are welcome to ask quetsions. He's very fair on grading.
He works hard and does a good job with this class. You will learn a lot with relative ease when you take his courses.
great energy very helpful and fair, organized and resourceful. makes it completely feasible to get an A, but class is still challenging. only warning is that he is strict about make-up tests, but he drops the lowest, and there is also a long extra replacement assignment u can do if it is extremely necessary.
Bad. Repeats himself. Class is boring. Watch mistakes on your tests. He does not have any leeway on that. You have to repeat exactly what he said how he said it to get full credit. Loves to take points away. Started to hate my major (bio) in his class and I switched. Dont leave out obvious stuff on tests, if you dont write it...points off.
He's a great professor and really helpful. Always willing to go the extra mile for students outside of class. I made him my Biology advisor and his input is golden. Tests can be hard if you don't study because its application, not just repeating facts. Lab is easy. Lectures are great. He uses plenty of real life examples. Great professor!
Took both 111 and 112. Honestly the most fair teacher you can get in terms of grading. You have to do really bad to do badly. Helpful and gives you all the resources you need. Tests were difficult but not more than they needed to be. Good class.
I don't think I like his teaching. What the heck wrong that you have to repeat exactly his words the get full point. You can not creactive. What to point of learning in this class. He's easy, don't get me wrong.I got A both of his classes after I learned from my 1st test that copy down everything on the practice test into your cheat sheet & you're saved
Good professor. His lectures are clear and helpful. Most of his lectures are recorded and posts them on his web.
Very organized, clear, and fair. A nice guy.
By far one of the grestest biology professors I have met...If he were to teach of the biology courses at umb everyone would pass with flying colors...crystal cear when explaining things...just go to lecture all teh time and your guaranteed to get an A if you just pay attention
By far one of the greatest biology professors I have met...If he were to teach all of the biology courses at umb everyone would pass with flying colors...crystal clear when explaining things...just go to lecture all teh time and your guaranteed to get an A if you just pay attention
presents his materials well, but it gets extremely boring after awhile. mostly all he does is write on the overhead projector and you take notes. his notes can be found online so it's not much of a problem if you don't come, attendance is about 5% of your final grade afterall.just study well from his notes and from the past tests, you will get an A
values student feedback; held sessions for separate discussion outside of class time. exam graders don't appreciate lengthy descriptions and it usually hurts your grade to write a lot. relatively inflexible with syllabus rules: you get to drop 1 exam whether it is your lowest grade, death in the family, or xerox/faculty collating error
I think he was a great professor!
By far one of the best professors I have ever had in my college career, if not THE best professor. Very clear and helpful, and everything is explained perfectly. His class really prepared me for upcoming harder classes. Take Bio 112 with Brian White!! I want to have his kids!!
The class is okay if you enjoy biology or if you need it to fulfill a requirement (my reason. Overall the prof is alright
Oversimplifies everything to the point of confusion and kills the subject for you if you already have a strong background in bio. Good professor for people who don't know much bio. You don't have to do much to pass. Go to class and lab, and copy the practice exam onto your cheat sheet and you'll get an A.
Best teacher you'll ever have. He gives you all any tools you'll need to succeed and truly cares. It doesn't get any better then Brian
great prof in the whole umb, very origanized and clear with everything.
Great Prof. Very interesting and well organized.
I LOVED HIS CLASS, if you can't not past the class that must mean you were never there AT ALL because it is harder to fail his class than it is to pass. I would recommend his class to everybody
Best Professor at Umass Boston..very smart and Aesome
Very good teacher. Let's you have a cheat sheet on all of the exams.
Oversimplifies things so much they become confusing/boring.Textbook is hardly used.Lectures are boring watching him write notes the whole time. Everything esp. exams are overformatted and he is dead set on using his graphics and animations to explain everything. Labs tend to be boring. Overall uninspiring class. Seems very earnest and nice though.
excited and interested about biology. kept students engaged with useful examples that were easy to understand. allowed one sheet of notes to be brought to each exam, and 4 sheets to the final! overall really nice guy who cares about his students and genuinely wants them to do well
i had brian for 111/112 he's really smart and takes teaching seriously 112 is WAY harder then 111. he's really fair and reasonable person the class is relatively easy but you do have to put in work (this is coming from someone who got an A) do the readings and practice tests and hw and pay attention in class and it should be smooth sailing
Basically copy everything he writes or go online & copy from there. Textbook used a few times. Class is boring. Lectures are on iTunesU. He takes points away from Q's on exams even when part of your answer is right & the other wrong he makes it a 0 which is unfair (it's college, but it should be partial credit). Handwriting's hard to read on board.
Hmm.. He's a very knowledgable professor, but his lectures can put you to sleep. Puts most of his lectures on iTunes, but not all -_- tests are something that you need to study for and read the questions carefully! Go over notes and practice tests that he includes in the lecture handouts binder.
prof White is an okay professor. He practically tell you where to get any information you might need. The problem with him is that he over simplifies things way too much. He really needs to find a teaching style that works for everyone and can help on the test. The way he teaches in class is does not help on the test. The questions are very confusing
he is such an awesome professor!
Really great professor. Attendance is kind of mandatory because he does a clicked question at the beginning of every class. Exams are short and all application no memorization. Lets you bring a cheat sheet but you won't even really use it. Overall there are a lot of ways to bring up your grade if you do the work. I ended up with an A.
His class was very straightforward and he made sure to cover everything on the exams in detail beforehand. Very easy!
I absolutely adore Brian White! I'm so sad he isn't teaching Bio 112 this semester, but we keep in touch. I agree with some of the other comments about how he can talk in circles when covering certain topics, but when you come to him with questions he does very well clarifying his lecture. Love him!!
Brian was a really great teacher. I learned alot from him and enjoyed talking about biology with him. He is really helpful and sincere. He is really focused on teaching in a way that you will take what you learn with you. If you are a biology major, he really helps set up a great foundation. Wish he was teaching bio112 this semester....
Very clear about material and explaining whats gonna be on the test. Dropped lowest test grade
Easy A and learned alot. I wish every teacher was as good at teaching as he is.
It's been 7 yrs since I've graduated with my BS, and have been successful in the field since. I still find myself going back to many of the basics I learned from prof. White. He is an amazing teacher, with amazing teaching techniques. His approach to teaching an "easy" class is really hard work disguised very well to make it "stick" in your brain.
He is awesome! he simplifies the complicated ideas in an easy way to understand. He is the BEST. If you do the work, here is an easy A.
Good Professor. 10 exams and a final. Exams are for the most part short and allowed "cheat sheets". Very nice. Recommended Only critique is that at the end of the course he changed the way he counted our points.
His class was just Ok, the exams weren't that hard but sometimes the materials taught in class weren't the same in the exam. Just put a little effort and u'll be fine.
Don't take this course in the morning. It's hard and the lab in the morning are alot of much work. I heard the evening lab are better than the morning. There was no time to study alot this material in 2 two exam. You must put alot of effort.
Bio 112 is hard.Don't take this class unless is in the evening/afternooon.It was the worst mistake I took Bio 112 in the mornings,3 time a week and the lab in morning as well. You need to be there on time and make sure to study. Exam are hard. Questions are confusing. It's not enough time to finish anything. You have to study on your own a lot.
Prof. White is the one of the most helpful science professor out there. He simplifies many hard topics that other professors would fail at explaining. I can't complain about him; I look forward to all his classes. If you put attention to lectures, do the mandatory work (which is little) ask questions and follow along, an A is very achievable :)
HE IS AWESOME!! TAKE THIS CLASS! Those who complain probably did not try even a little. His lectures are posted online, always takes time clarify any misunderstandings. Super easy, conceptually IF YOU TAKE NOTES AND TRY! Honestly didn't like Bio prior, but definitely do now. Best choice you ever made if you take his class :)
He is a great teacher and the most organized I have ever seen! He has so many resources, I dont see how you can fail! He grades very loosely and drops two tests. The exams take 15 minutes and youre allowed a whole class period. Honestly, people that are complaining did bad because of themselves. You must not have tried at all. Utilize his resources
I took Dr. White for 111 and 112. He is the best teacher I've ever had. Explains things really clearly, very nice and funny as well. 10 "mini-exams" that you can take a cheat sheet to, plus a final, which you can take 4 cheat sheets to. Organized, clear, informative and fun. PLUS, he is trying out a free version of the textbook. Bonus points!!
Dr white is very engaging professor. He definitely know his stuff very well. The course has 10 "mini exams"(he'll drop 2 lowest), 1 final. there'll be bunch of work that you gotta do but if you put the efforts "A" is guaranteed. the book is rarely used also you don't need the atlas in my opinion (I bought it and never used it).
He know his stuff too well. There are 10 "mini exams", 1 final. You'll be allowed to bring notes to the exam. books are not mandatory, and I don't think you'll need one.
Brian so far is the best biology teacher I've ever had. He is clear and concise. Some of this topics are very engaging. He allows 1 cheat sheet (front and back) per exam and drops the lowest test score in each "half semester". Easily the easiest class I've ever taken. Didn't read the text book nor studied. The cheat sheets will do it all for you.
Professor White is OK. For those of us who want a challenge and want to learn REAL Biology, I suggest taking Bio 111 and 112 elsewhere because the one in UMass Boston is a Cliffnotes version. I barely put any effort in and received an A. 10 mini exams with cheat sheets--doesnt feel like college level course.
Best biology professor I've ever had. He uses a program called SPOC that is very helpful, especially if you're the type of student who needs to repeat the material many times to understand it. If you have the chance to take his class, than do it! Fyi, he gives 100 safety-net points. Basically impossible to not get a good grade with him.
Amazing professor. His use of the SPOC program is great and more teachers should adopt this method. It is extremely helpful. Wish I could have him again next semester.
Super good teacher, lots of homework, very good and explains what you need to know, the lectures we have to watch prior to his class for HW suck though. you get points for attendance
Professor White is ok. His class is very easy. The majority of the graded material comes from homework, and if you do it you're guaranteed at least a 90. You have to watch roughly 45 minutes of his lectures as homework per class, if you do this then the tests will be ridiculously easy. Lab is pretty simple. He wants you to get an A.
Dr. White is, by far, best bio instructor I've ever had. His lectures consist of iClicker questions. His tests are based on practice problems and sample tests which are provided on SPOC. Definitely recommend him for any science majors.
He is a great professor! If you are unclear about something, he would be more than happy to help you understand the concept. Tutoring is optional but I strongly recommend it if you are struggling in the first two weeks.
If you pay attention and do the online work (SPOC) you should be fine. I was surprised how clear his assignments were. Great teaching style.
Brian was an amazing professor. His lectures, although 300+ students, were clear and extremely helpful. If you don't have a strong science background you might struggle a bit, but you'll be fine. He uses an online tool called SPOC for lectures and in class it is mostly clicker questions to help you understand the concepts more.
He is a good teacher learned a lot this year from him
He's a great professor. Everything is well-explained during the course. You can easily pass this course if you follow and complete all the small work sections. Lab is fun, the SPOC lecture is interesting and very helpful for self-studying.
Brian is the best teacher I have ever had! His teaching style is something that I wish every science teacher adopted. The SPOC is one of the greatest teaching tools, and combined with the iClicker questions provides a very easy way to learn.
Dr. White is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is very clear on what he teaches; all of his tests and assignments are distributed according to his instructions. Very inspirational, if I may add. He gives you A LOT of chances to do well in Biology and actually cares for you. Unless you are bent on failing, you are GUARANTEED to do well.
Brian White has been one of the most enthusiastic and helpful professor. I truly appreciate being in his class and having a greater understanding of biology. If you want an intuitive course to learn biology from the source; Brian White is the guy. If you dislike Biology, he'll teach you the way into success.
cant believe he doesnt have an A. this guy is the best if more professors were like him more kids would attend school. He is clearly interested in the material and cares that everyone understands. Got an A without the final
Brian was a good prof. He loves to use the SPOC & iClickers as the primary source of learning. It was great in the beginning, but got annoying towards the end. Overall, I got a good grade & great knowledge from him, and he was always willing to answer private questions that I needed to ask him.
The class is full of non-science majors just trying to fill a distribution requirement so be prepared to deal with a lot of confused people without STEM backgrounds asking dumb questions. His problems-based approach is novel, but I felt like a lot of time was wasted waiting for iclicker answers, and that time often devolved into loud chaos. Easy A.
Amazing Professor. If you complete all the work which is very much, its an easy A. The only reason you wont get a good grade is if you dont try at all. EASY A.
Amazing course, makes it so easy for you to get an A. Allows many cheat sheets for each exam and SPOC is super helpful. GO TO LECTURES. They'll give you all you need to know. Super easy class super fun class loved it
He is an amazing professor and his lectures were mind blowing because I felt like I understood everything. :)
Professor White is amazing. He is so great at teaching. I got a concussion during finals, and he worked with me to make it up during the winter break. He is truly an amazing professor.
This class is the biggest joke. You just need an iclicker to answer the questions, but he always puts up the entire class online so you'll be fine.
I'm not a big fan of science but his class was easy enough for me to pass. He takes attendance by having iClicker questions for every lecture so either go to class or have someone answer your iClicker. Every thing you learn is on SPOC so use it to your advantage.
Great professor, you watch the lectures online and then attend the lectures where you go over the material. Great class if you like science, easy to understand if you don't
His class is super easy and extremely stress free. Even though I already took AP Biology in High School, I learned new things in his class and actually enhanced my knowledge in Biology. Even for a person who isn't even a Bio major, they can an easy A if you attended class and do the homework (SPOC).
Brian was an amazing prof. His teaching style is so clear-cut. He uses an online education tool to help supplement his lectures, and then clarifies everything during lecture. He also had 10 mini quizzes, and he had a 100 point "buffer". With pretty much failing every test (not on purpose), I got an A- in his class. And now, I really miss Brian.
SPOC (online lectures, questions, and homework) was really useful for Bio 111. Cheat-sheets are allowed for exams. You hardly need the cheat sheets in his classes, as the way he presents lecture material makes it easy to understand and you can pass exams with flying colors. 10 exams & final for the course.
In Bio 112, cheat-sheets are allowed for examss. You hardly need the cheat sheets in his classes, as the way he presents lecture material makes it easy to understand and you can pass exams with flying colors. The lab practicals are very useful to study off of for the final exam. 10 exams & final for the course.
Amazing professor. The only great biology professor at Umass Boston
Such an amazing professor. Took him for Bio 111 and it was a pretty easy class overall. He's very clear and tries his best to make class exciting. He has exams from previous years and they are a lifesaver. If you pay attention in class and study off those past exams, you'll pass with flying colors. Taking him for upper level because he's awesome!
He's the real MVP!! If you have the opportunity to take him than don't waste time thinking twice about it, because the class might get full! Easiest A possible!
Bio 111 w Brian White was the best decision of my career at UMB. Easily one of the best professors at UMB. Class is easy as long as you show up and tune in. There were 10 mini tests when I took the class, and he dropped the lowest scores from the first 5 and the last 5 tests. Also he lets you use one cheat sheet (double sided) on each test!
I've taken both BIO 111 and 112 w Prof. White. He's that good! The lectures are pretty easy and he breaks down the material so it's easier to understand. I'm not even a science major and I passed the class w an A. Prof. White is very approachable and he's always willing to help out his students.
Brian White is amazing.
Best of all, most caring of all, most understandable of all. He is soooo knowledgeable. He is comfortable teaching the materials which is what students want to see to make them want to learn. He basically help students pass the class if they are serious about their grades by dropping the lowest exam score, clickers questions and homework.!!!!!!!!!!
He is awesome!!! Bio is tough but he insures that every single person in our 400 student class gets what is going on. Take his class!
awesome
One of the best professors I have ever came across so far in my college career even though I am just a freshman bio major. His explanations are clear and as long as you attend lectures, do SPOC, and other extra stuff, you'll do fine in his class. Rewatch the SPOC videos because it will help out on the test and be sure to pay attention in lecture.
The easiest class ever. I took AP bio before this & was so over-prepared from that, that I barely had to pay attention in lecture/watch the online lectures to do the homework. Homework starts extremely easy, gets more time-consuming at end of the semester, still not bad. The lab is part of the course, also very easy, rarely have lab reports. Easy A
Clear lectures and schedule. There are mini-exams (more like quizzes) every week but they end up being very helpful to boost your grade up. There is a small assignment before every class but they also are quick and helpful. Cheat sheets are allowed even on the final and he will answer all questions. Amazing professor!
Brian White makes Bio 111 is easy. The lab component only requires showing up and sometimes completing a lab report (lenient grading). You get a cheat sheet on every exam and the final, as well as past practice exams to study from. Your grade is calculated out of 650 but there are 710 possible points; easy A, but I still learned a lot.
Brian White is a great Biology 111 professor. He is clear about what will be on exams and he has an engaging teaching style. It isn't too much work and you really learn. The cheat sheets aren't helpful btw lol it's either you know the stuff or you don't.
Fun guy. Short exams, and a fairly easy class overall. If you pay attention to most lectures and take some notes you will do just fine.
The way he teaches is by watching an online lecture than applying what you watched in class through clicker questions. There is no book but there are test every Monday but if you study its an easy A. Extremely helpful and keeps your attention. He is a very smart man!
Easy science class. all assignments are found online, you watch a video and answer some questions before lecture and you're set. lectures are engaging because you have to be answering clicker questions which count for credit. very short test once a week, takes about 15 minutes to complete and he allows a cheat sheet. super easy class.
Brian white was an okay professor. Majority of the material you will have to learn on your own through SPOC where he assigns lectures from an MIT professor. Sometimes lec online is longer than class actually is. There is an exam every monday and lab report due every lab. Easy class + easy A. Cannot skip clas because of iclicker q's + xtra pts.
Great class. Need to satisfy a natural science req? You'll be glad you chose this instead of gen chem. Bio major? Take intro to bio with Brian. You'll be a happy cookie, I promise.
Professor White is an amazing professor. He uses questions and multiple other techniques to help you remember information about Bio. His lectures feel like you've only been in class for 30 minutes. He helps you in whatever way he can. The tests were easy if you listen in class and do the homework. I recommend making a cheat sheet to all the tests.
Professor White is very clear, detailed and specific about what he requires for students to do well. Main ideas and concepts are learned for homework (which does take some time), and in class, he does examples that will prepare you fully for his exams. His practice exams are very helpful and exactly like his real exams. Highly recommend!
Great professor !
Honestly one of the best professors at the school. He is so considerate of students who have questions in class, regardless of the fact that there's 200 of them. He breaks everything down and makes it more simple and easy to understand. Even though the tests were sometimes challenging and there was one every week, it ended up being so helpful because failing one or two didn't ruin your grade and he gave partial credit. 10/10 100% recommend him as a professor he is awesome.
Without a doubt the worst professor I have ever had. He is rude, unapproachable and clearly doesn't care about teaching bio 111 at all. The lectures are useless as he makes you watch essentially the same thing before class for hw. he is the worst lecturer imaginable!!! He is dry, speaks too quickly, isn't passionate at all... monotone for days.
Amazing teacher overall. Really willing to help. He gives you all the opportunities, resources and materials you need to pass. He's great at explaining things, deserves best teacher award. He inspires you to want to be like him.
He posts all his lectures online which is super helpful! He also assigns work based on the next lecture, so you get to apply what you're learning and then learn more about it in depth the next lecture!
Absolutely amazing professor. His area of expertise is science education, so virtually all of his research is on the efficacy of different teaching methods. What this means for anybody taking his class is that you get a professor who's dedicated his career to finding the most efficient way possible to learn his course material, and make sure everybody passes. I highly recommend him to anyone who has a chance to take one of his courses.
Professor White is an amazing professor and strives to teach bio as clear as possible. I learned so much from this class but he clearly has potential to teach at a a much higher level instead of being stuck with students who don't even study and get SPOC answers from other students.
Brian is one of the best teachers at Mass Boston. He does a different way of teaching compared to most other professors and it works. His style of teaching is very guided. He doesn't want you to read from the book and learn by yourself, he wants to actually teach you himself, whether its from lecture or from video. Take any bio class with him!
Greatest professor ever! Professor White is a one of the best professor I have in UMass Boston, he is caring and inspirational. He posts all lecture notes and videos online, it's very helpful for all . Short quizzes every week but he allows cheat sheet, exams are easy once you pay attention in class. I learned a lot from him, highly recommended!
Best teacher in umass wish I could take all my science classes with him Definitely recommend him to anyone
Don't skip like I Did. Those 50 point iclicker questions help towards the end.
He is nice. But the material is hard. Every week have exam and assignments before each class. Every week has homework.
Brian White flipped the classroom: we watched lecture videos for homework and did homework sets in class. Weekly exams, but if you do the reading and come to class you will pass easily.
Simply AMAZING !
He's really funny and I find him clear to understand, but there is LOTS of homework. Lots of teaching yourself outside of class type homework.
An amazing teacher, homework is everyday but simple, if you need anything he is a very nice guy! I wish he taught every classs
As long as you show up to class and do clicker questions, do SPOC homework, do well on tests, and succeed in lab you will pass. None of the material is hard as long as you pay attention to the SPOC lectures. He is willing to help students struggling but overall the class is passable.
This guy right here is the best! I love the way the class is structured and he actively searches for ways to improve it. He will often poll the class to see how we would like to see the class run. He doesn't lecture, instead there are online hw videos. He then explains everything that was mentioned in the hw clearly and answers questions. No final
Brian White is one of the best professors at UMB. He designed his class in a way that makes it so simple to follow and understand as long as you are doing the online homework and showing up to class. I would take this class again if I could.
The way this class was structured was really cool- you watch the lectures online before class and then in class you answer questions about it with a clicker and go more in depth about what you already learned. Also the quizzes are really easy if you study and everything you need for the class you buy in a binder at the beginning of a semester
Hated this class. The professor is a good person outside of work but a terrible professor. He barely answered any questions students had.
One of the best professors here at UMass Boston. Brian's whole system (SPOC) in the way he taught, tested us and kept up with the class was genius. Brian is also very accessible and loves to talk to his students he's caring. He made BIO111 interesting and enjoyable. Highly recommended, the best choice
Brian White is a great professor who is personable and smart. The flipped classroom set up made lectures go by quickly because you are engaged in the clicker questions + discussion. As long as you show up to class, pay attention, and do your homework you should easily get a good grade. I found myself not having to put much extra time in to get an A
The lecture is very dry. There's no passion or emotion in his voice . It's very hard to stay focused because the lectures are so boring. The exams have nothing to do with the material he teaches or uploads online. I did not do well in his class but did well in every other class I had. People either love him or dislike him.
He is an angel
Favorite teacher so far.
He is my favorite teacher so far throughout my college experience. He is extremely smart and knows how to teach. You ask him a question, he gives a detailed answer until you understand. He is very passionate about science and would definitely take him again.
His lectures were very engaging and he knew how to get the content across. Attendance was taken through iClickers, there was no textbook for the course, and there was homework assigned through an online website. There were weekly exams that were all cumulative; however, there was no final. Safety included; therefore, the class wasn't too difficult!
This man is an ELITE professor. A goat if you would.
Brian White is the best professor at UMASS HANDS DOWN. He is so kind, helpful, and an expert in his field. I took Sim Life with him remote (thanks covid) and I had so much fun in his class. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed in his class and helps guide you throughout the semester. 10000% take his class if you can!
My favorite professor ever!
Brian made me like Biology again, I was nervous to take it but he made it really fun and interesting. The homework isn't horrible, some videos are long which is the only downside. All of the exams are take-home and you are allowed to use your notes and go to him for help. 10/10 would take again
No textbook but invest in the two binders he has for the class. The 50 min lecture goes by relatively quickly because you're actively learning. Great teacher. Hw isn't hard: just videos with follow-up questions. Grade is based on hw, participation on the iclicker, labs, and the take-home exams. Not hard to pass if you do the work and go to the labs
Prof White is one of the best professors at UMass Boston. His lectures are engaging, and he makes every effort to guarantee everyone passes his class. He has the neatest handwriting compared to all my professors.
If you are going to take BIOL111, take Brian. This class does involve quite a lot of work to be done on your own, but if you actually do the assigned lectures, class is a piece of cake. Could not say enough good things about him. I thoroughly understood every topic in this class.
Brian White has designed the most easy to digest hw routine I've ever imagined. Don't get me wrong, at the beginning I thought "This is going to be a tough class with a lot of hw." Half way through the semester, I realized he was my favorite teacher. The online systems HE CREATED is very impressive. 3-4 hours of hw a week and you'll get an easy A.
I took it both online and in person . He is a great teacher, he is understanding. Pay attention in class and do all the homework, easy A. Ask questions he is willing to help he answer emails quick.
Prof White is the best prof at UMB. He is an amazing person and actually cares about all his students. There is about 3-4 hours of online homework every week and all exams are take home based on the lab for the week prior. There is no final or midterm. Easy A.
Brian White has a totally different way of teaching and he does it this way to make the students more engaged with the class. We have clicker questions that he makes and updates each year and has a lot of passion for what he does. Although I do not think I retained much from the class it is an introductory one so I don't think it really matters.
Brian is honestly such a great guy. You can tell he is really passionate about what he does which made me enjoy the class more. The homework can sometimes be a little time consuming but always pretty easy. The exams were take home and were based off of lab so lab is important. Lectures were pretty interesting, and I found the class to be an easy A.
Professor White has a lot of passion for what he does. His teaching method makes students get more engaged with the class. We had an online based homework which takes around 3-4 hours every week, iClicker questions given during classes. It is a must to attend the lab classes for understanding and giving the take-home exams.
Great professor who actually cares about teaching his students. As long as you stay on top of homework, attend class for iclicker questions and do good on take-home exams (not sure if he's doing them for upcoming semesters), it's very hard to get even below a B+. Homework (SPOC) is dependant on lectures so make sure to keep up with them.
I'm a freshman and I didn't do very well in AP biology when I was in high school but coming to Brians's class made it so much easier. He literally starts with the basics and builds up from each class. If you pay attention you'll literally do great. PAY ATTENTION, Do the spocs , and make sure your pre labs are correct.
Take Brian White!! He's a great guy and he cares! Do the SPOC, show up for class, do the iclicker q's and it's an easy A. Exams were every few weeks, more frequent at the start, and were take-home and had multiple days to do it. Lectures were reversed so material is learned through HW/videos and questions/more in-depth learned occurring in class.
I loved Brain's class, it was easy but not too easy to the point where you had to put in little work. you still had to put in work, and the work you put in is the grade you get
Caring guy with a big heart, loves his job and reflects his passion for biology through his teaching.
Great class, just pay attention, and its an easy A, I'm a bio BS major, and taking this course for the first time as a freshman was amazing, please take this course even if you arent a bio major.
Exams are online and take home and he gives you two weeks in advance to do them, which is helpful. They can be difficult. Parts of the exams are based on what you do in lab, so pay attention in lab! Clicker questions are mandatory, they count your attendance. Homework involves watching hours of videos, and answering questions, which was not fun.
great guy. great class. easy A. take it.
You can tell he is passionate about the subject which is very encouraging. Had to buy a binder instead of a textbook- helps learn a lot more and is not super expensive. He really tries to connect with his students and I really appreciate that in professors. Exams are take-home and you get plenty of time and guidance- def recommend!
He is an incredible professor but also a great person. He makes what he wants on the tests very clear so all you have to do is check against the rubric before submitting it. Do watch the SPOC lectures if you want an understanding of what is happening. In class participation does not matter if you are right or wrong just that you tried. Take him!!
He is the absolute best. He cares for his students so much and you can really see he is enthusiastic to teach. He made my first semester of college really good and I would definitely take his class again. BW FOREVER!
Amazing professor. The lectures were very engaging and the homework was meaningful.
i love brian's classes, they were fun to attend but required a lot of attention. if you don't pay attention youre doomed. do the spoc and the iclicker questions and you should be all set for the lectures. attending the lab is very necessary otherwise you wont know what to write on your exams. he's kind and all his classes are fun.
I agree with all the positive feedbacks written below. I want to point out the negative. Firstly, you'll barely get any feedback on your work. Secondly, his video materials are more than 10 years old and are very laggy. Thirdly, the class is huge. On the good sides, u can attend classes online and there is a 99 point safety net for getting an A
Dr. White is a great teacher. If you show up and do the work, you guaranteed to pass the class. If you follow his guidelines by doing spoc, attending lectures, and labs its easy to pick up. There is also tutoring available for Bio 111 and I'd recommend your TA/lab office hours. He is also engaging during lectures despite the large class size.
Super helpful in every way. Clear lectures and understanding of technical difficulties.
brian white slays
Probably one of the easiest professors here. Super kind, classwork is explained in a clear way. Required us to get a packet full of all the lecture questions and we had to get some remote thing (~$76 total). Worst part was lab, very strict TA who was just looking to take off points. But Brian himself is very nice and I would 100% take this again.
Always ready to listen to students and help with their concerns or help them understand where they have difficulties.
Brian is an engaged and funny professor. Even though it is a large class it is very informational and manageable. This is one of my classes where I felt like I was taught the most and challenged on what I learned. Great class and lots of opportunities to raise your grade.
Would recommend! I definitely would take it again.
He's so sweet and amazing!!! We all love him. Thank you, Brian
Brian is a great lecturer and human. Very helpful and kind to all students, Grading is very fair and reasonable amount of work. The lectures are online with questions for the homework and then class is just going over it. Attendance is done by clicker questions which you are able to use the app from everywhere but you're supposed to go
Great teaching strategy, funny, would take again.
Mr. White, a standout biology teacher,His unique ability to simplify complex concepts and genuine care for students, fondly called "Gramps," create a memorable and enjoyable learning environment. educator and musician, his impact extends beyond the classroom, making him an exceptional mentor and inspiration. Highly recommended!!!!!!
Hes a great guy. The class is pretty easy, all the tests are take home and consist of what you do in lab. There is homework but it is manageable. Attendance is mandatory with the iclicker, and his lectures are pretty interesting. He doesn't just talk he makes us get involved to understand better. some computer softwares are annoying.
Participation is huge; do the iClickers. Take home exams nearly every week, but they aren't multiple choice. SPOC assignments are everyday unless he announces otherwise, he doesn't announce when there is SPOC only when there isn't.
Went in as a business major not knowing anything at all. Despite having exams almost every week (7 exams) that aren't multiple choice and could pretty time consuming, I don't regret taking this class at all. He is very well respected, knowledgeable, and his classes are super interesting. TA did grade everything, search up your TA before selecting!
Homework is key to understanding lectures. However they were still fun and interesting. They are pretty interactive and the TAs he chooses for the course are pretty amazing too. The atmosphere of his classes is great. Also be sure to ask for help b/c there are some sections that can be confusing but everyone is willing to help! Overall enjoyable!
Brian was easy to talk to and made a large lecture class fun and understanding! highly recommend him and his class.
He is an excellent professor and cares for his students! Pay attention in lecture to help you understand concepts and to get help on things you do not understand. He is the best you will enjoy this class!
He is very funny, approachable, and cares about his students success. The exams are more like lab reports due every week and the rubric is super clear; as long as you hit all the marks on the rubric, you can ace the exam no problem. Labs are fun and easy, though they are pretty long. Loved this class!
He is such a nice professor. His lectures were engaging and the content is interesting (if you like bio). He walked around the room and interacted with students when asking clicker questions. The work can be difficult sometimes but if you pay attention during lectures + lab and do the work it will be fine. It was my favorite class.
Professor White is a fantastic lecturer who makes a large class feel engaging and enjoyable. The course has a reasonable workload, and the TAs are incredibly helpful. I found unstuckstudy ai and the free textbook to be great study resources. Highly recommended!
While I did not get a good grade he was still a great professor. Biology personally is such a hard subject for me. He's approachable, relatable and overall a good person. The only complaint I have is the speed of his lectures. He moves at a fast rate and if you aren't good at bio i recommend tutoring and talking to the TAs. It felt accelerated.
Nice professor, his class really approaches the topics from different perspectives, all you need to do is to relax and flow naturally in the wave and you will end up doing well while also learning stuff firmly.
Hands down one of the best professors at UMass. That is all I have to say.
Professor Brian has probably been one of my favorite teachers at UMass so far, which may seem like a low standard due to the unique education system here. His class is very understandable those not proficient in Genetics. He always makes an attempt to get to know his students as well. Please take his class and ask him if he remembers Alisha.
He wasn't bad, but I thought he graded a little too harshly on exams.
