Great lecturer. He goes pretty fast, but he's very entertaining.
Wow. Wonderful man, what can I say. Very nice.

This guys lectures are like watching a monkey**** fight. No structure, no engagement, basically all over the place. He prides himself on making the class out of reach and over everyone's head. Not one of his lectures came close to what on his tests. Basically he could care less about the students.
This guys teachings habits are a mess PERIOD. In class he will go through some easy concepts, then you will do the online homework and you'll do fine. However, when the first, second, and third tests come around, you'll ask yourself where he the #### did he git these questions from. Not a very helpful teacher out of class either. STAY AWAY!!!!
This teacher prides himself in running circles around the class maybe to compensate for insecurities. He has a good attitude while teaching, but a very poor attitude outside class. Avoid this teacher if possible.
Very easy class. As long as you attend his lectures, take the quizes, and read the material for the exams, it should not be a problem to get an A.He's passionate about the subject, and tries to explain it as best as he can.I liked him. Very very helpful with the students.Approachable any time.Lenient in grading.Very easy quizes. Not the exams, though
stay on top of all of ur work and you will do fine
Lectures are extremely boring and he never uses the textbook so don't buy it and save your $55+. He talks while he writes notes on the overhead projector. Lots of continuous writing in class. The class isn't actually about start and galaxies it's pretty much a physics class and you talk about atoms and equations and useless stuff like that. Don't t
Woodahl's innumerous notes correspond very little to anything in the textbook and he's very boring. He doesn't use oncourse at all which is super frustrating. Nothing is done through oncourse, you can't even get any info about the class on there when you're enrolled. Ridiculously boring class
EASY. The people who complain are the ones who skip every Tues. after a quiz and every Thurs. Maybe if they came to class, they'd do better. He writes ALL the notes down on the overhead, so you don't have to sift through the info he lectures on. Nice guy. Also, he said (clearly) on the 1st day we wouldn't use the book!
the labs and recitation are a piece of cake. its the exams that get you. There are 8 problems, 4 points each and then he makes that into 100 points, very bad grading system. so many people retake that class. First day the room was packed and all of sudden 1/4 of us were left and half of us still got c's.
Very fair and knowledgable about subject material. Text is not used, tests are 100% from notes. He goes out of his way to make sure you understand the material. Entertains myriad questions before and after class explaining material. I would highly recommend Prof. Woodahl!
He is a great professor who likes what he does and he is very very funny!
I'm not sure what all the complaints are about. As long as you attend every class and take notes, you should have no problem getting AT LEAST a B. He does not require you to buy the textbook, which is always a plus. The class can get rather boring, but Professor Woodahl is very funny, keeping it entertaining.
He's pretty cool.
Dr. Woodahl is by far the worst professor I have ever had. I took his Introductory Astronomy course as it was a required class. His teaching style is completely nonsensical and the information he provided was useless. He told me explicitly that he didn't care about my education when I confronted him about the problem. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES!
He is the best professor of physics ever!!!
There was a lot of material for this class, but Dr. Woodahl did a great job at covering and explaining it all. He does move quickly, but if you attend class and pay attention, there should be no problem getting a good grade in the class.
Dr. Woodahl is a great professor, but does move quickly like many said. He'll normally get things done with time to spare, so getting out of class early is a plus! He's also pretty funny for a physics prof!
Dr. Woodahl is pretty cool as a person but kind of hard to get as a teacher if you have never taken a physics course before. He seems intimidating at first but he really isnt at all. The hard part about the class is he teaches topics in his order and therefore doesnt go by a textbook. He also gives you a lot of point boosters which are pretty cool
awsome teacher. really funny. people get so worked up when they fail though...they just need to come to class
Easy A! I am not good at science but Woodahl makes it easy for me to grasp. Be prepared to take A LOT of notes, but if you summarize them everyday it makes it so much easier when the test comes. As long as you go to class every day and take good notes and study you should do well in the class.
Dr. Woodahl is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He sometimes goes above and beyond but he LOVES physics.
DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK. He understands that most students are in his class to fulfill a requirement, and makes the class extremely easy. I think I could have gotten an A without going to the first half of the semester, if it weren't for the quizzes. Weekly, easy quizzes, tests are all multiple choice. Really simple class.
Great class- he's a hoot and knows when his students need some entertainment. He does a great job helping students understand complex concepts and his exams are very fair. He's organized, interesting, and engaging. I was very impressed.
This class is hard no matter who you take it with, but he makes it less grueling to attend because he's funny. He does well in lecture but goes really fast. His tests usually have at least one or two questions that are SUPER hard.
This dude is awesome, hands down. All the haters just didn't do enough practice problems to prepare for the tests. If you can knock out "one star" problems in the textbook, you can soundly defeat his tests - they are incredibly straightforward.
This professor is very funny. He either believes whole-heartedly or jokingly in aliens. Its hard to tell if it his true belief is this or if it is just a joke. My class was in the large lecture hall and therefore the attendance isn't truly necessary. Quizzes every Thursday and 3 main exams but no homework ever. A+ (Also allows laptops!)
He is the best prof at the entire school. I wish I was a physics major. Because of him I chose Physics as my master degree. He made physics easy. yes his exams tend to be hard, but who wants an easy class?? if you are a bio or chem major, you will learn how to think outside the box. He is an amazing prof, adviser, and a recommender.
Pretty fun teacher. Very smart and enthusiastic, especially compared to the other P201 teacher. Tests are super hard, but their are lots of other points offered to raise your grade. Calculus is not required for the class but knowing it is helpful in understanding some of the material.
People that complain about Dr. Woodahl clearly lack either work ethic or a sense of humor. He's one of the most entertaining professors I've ever met and is extremely knowledgeable. He manages to come up with the most random and humorous examples throughout the course. The course itself is fairly easy so long as you take time to work problems.
He literally is no help at all! Physics is a hard subject so not having a good teacher is a nightmare. He spends all lecture deriving equations that he doesn't even test over. Horrible class! DO not take with him!
Woodahl's eccentric but fascinating.
Guy's cool as hell. Funny, smart, inspiring. Class was wayyy too easy unfortunately. I sometimes felt like he didn't take it seriously, and that was sad to me. Does not use the textbook at all, which is upsetting because the book is extraordinary. Class size was about 400, which is so large that you can guarantee you're never getting time for Q's.
The professor is funny, but all we do in class is derive equations when you will be tested on the knowledge of the material, outside class, he does not seem helpful, tells you to drop the class after failing the first exam! I'd stay off this prof
Woodahl is pretty out there, but he's easy to listen to. The tests and quizzes are 100% from his notes and not the book. I shouldn't have even bought the book. The material is tough to understand sometimes, but the tests are dumed down to a middle school level. ZERO HOMEWORK.
Woodahl was great! kept class interesting and you ligit didn't know what he was going to say next. You don't need to bother with the textbook as all quizzes and tests are directly from his lectures, thus you should really attend. I would recommend him to everyone!
this professor is great , keep to your notes and you will be fine , always take notes and don't miss class.
Do not buy the book!! I look forward to coming to this class, he makes everything so interesting and his stories are hilarious. Quizzes are 4 questions (multiple choice, once a week, and exams are all multiple choice. Everything is based off of the lecture notes and not the book, so go to class although attendance is not mandatory.
A very silly professor. Sometimes goes off track but fun none the less. LOTS of note taking.
Professor Woodahl is pretty silly! He keeps the class laughing, so that definitely helps because I think the material is pretty dry. You will be taking a TON of notes - take them on a computer. It makes it easier when preparing for the exams. Study for the quizzes - they are a big part of your grade. And DO NOT buy the text book.
He writes all of the notes on the board as he lectures, so note taking is easy but extensive. Take notes. Quizzes are easy if you just look over last class notes. I took the quizzes lightly, and ended up with a B in this class (bad thing)! It's an intro course, and he teaches it that way. Which I appreciated. Very interesting still.
This professor is so funny. Some days he seems fresh out of the loony bin. Definitely a guy I would chill with. 100% on personality. He gets a "hotness" check due to his sweet Patagonia vests. Class is hard. Buy the textbook. He doesn't use it but the "one star" problems will make your grade if practiced.
If you took this class because you thought "Ooooh the solar system"...you're going to have a bad time. Professor Woodahl is extremely eccentric and funny so that makes this material bearable, but mostly what we did was look at big numbers or do equations. It wasn't hard, but still, I had a different expectation of what the class would be like.
By far the best teacher at IUPUI. Didn't know what to expect coming into his class, but I will it admit that it opened my eyes and helped me view life with a brand new perspective. Go to class everyday and take notes, and you'll earn an A. One of the more enjoyable classes I've ever taken.
Best Professor I've ever had! All his lectures are hand written notes and all of his test are straight out of the notes.
I do not recommend Dr. Woodahl for P201. Physics is tough as it is, and having a bad professor does not help. You will get much more out of the course if you take it with Dr. Petrache.
He doesn't believe in posting anything. Recitations are pointless. He is never helpful, ever. Never uses the full class time. He assumes everyone took physics in high school. Even my friend who did take it in HS hates him. Positives are he is funny. That's about it.
awful professor for P201. My roommate took his astronomy class and LOVED it. BUT if you are planning on taking his physics class prepare to teach yourself! He is an astrophysicists his thing is astronomy not physics and he makes that clear. He is pretty funny in lecture but EXTREMELY mean outside of class! tells his students to drop out of college!
Dr. Woodahl is a mechanical engineer by trade, with a PHD in physics... He is so smart he makes himself laugh during lecture. He was extremely funny, and a very smart guy. I loved his lectures. The goal is to UNDERSTAND the material, not apply it. Highly recommended for a elective class. I would take it again and again. One of the best classes.
This class is more challenging than one would think. Though he is hilarious, his lectures are all over the place and really hard to follow. Concepts are hard to grasp. Wouldn't recommend.
As long as you take good notes and study them often, you will do well. Never looked at the textbook. Do not expect a lot of assistance or updated test scores often. Fun and funny class!
Worst class I have taken at IUPUI. I am an exceptional student with good grades, &this class is the first that I have received a poor grade in. He never uses the allotted time for lectures, recitations are pretty much pointless, labs are easy & graded on participation. He is very unavailable & rude when asked ques in or outside of class.
Just terrible. He talks about his childhood memories instead of explaining student's questions. I do not recommend.
This class is super easy. Show up (or not) and take notes (or get them from a friend). Study the night before the test and you are fine. There is a easy 4 question quiz once a week and no homework. Textbook is not needed; don't waste your money on one.
He gives you all the notes during class, just copy them down and study them, and you'll do good on the quizzes and tests. Also, he curves your final grade. Fun class and an easy A!
I feel like I didn't learn nothing from this class, he gets off topic way to much and when he does notes he doesn't do them to the point of where I can't really type them up on my laptop as this is the easiest way to take notes in the class
Brian is very smart and hilarious, but he often gets on tangents and tells a lot of lame (but funny) jokes. If you just show up and listen and take notes, you will pass. The book is not needed at all, he writes everything you will need on the projector. Also, if you can't decide, take a105 instead of a100. It's easier and more interesting.
Weird dude. Weird grading policies. If you take good notes and show up to class for quizzes and tests, you'll be fine. He doesn't use oncourse or canvas to update your grade throughout the semester, so that's annoying, but he curves what he grades so it's not as bad as you think.
There were three tests during the semester + the final; you perform poorly on one, it's difficult to keep a decent grade. Make sure to do the practice problems from the book. The most difficulty I had was trying to transition from the lecture exams to the final. The final often requires more than one equation in tandem, different from the first 3.
Rude when asked questions, gets off topic discussing childhood stories, seems to have some serious disdain toward students, and lectures are not very helpful. Take it with Petrache.
He really knows his stuff and he is a great lecturer. The only thing that I didn't like about him was that he doesn't use Canvas to post grades or assignments. Attendance is not mandatory but I would recommend showing up to get the notes, because you cannot access them online.
He is not a good teacher. I had to teach myself everything I learned the entire semester. I learned nothing from the professor.
Really enjoyed Professor Woodahl but it is mandatory to go to lectures. He does not post notes online and you do not need the textbook so all of the test and quiz information comes from your class notes. Your entire grade is based off of 3 tests and a quiz once a week. Overall, if you show up, the class is easy and you'll learn a lot.
Likes to tell stories off topic. Had a weekly quiz with only 4 questions and three exams throughout the course. A down to earth guy.
Great professor and I love the lectures, they are never boring. Made it an interesting topic to learn about, even if you don't know much about astronomy yet. If you pay attention, you'll pass the weekly quizzes easily. There's only three tests throughout the semester including the final.
Attend all classes. Take notes and you are all set for an A+. Very easy weekly quizzes and exams.
Easy course
Lectures keep you engaged. Show up and write down everything he puts on the projector and you'll be fine. Just study for a few minutes before quizzes and make flashcards for tests. As he tells you at the start of the semester, it's an easy class.
Easy class and he knows what he is talking about. Just write the notes from the projector, and use them to study for the exams. Note that he does not use Canvas to post grades.
Hes a funny guy who knows what hes doing. As long as you come to the lectures and pay attention and study your notes you will pass with ease. There is no additional homework, just quizzes and tests.
He's definitely a quirky guy, but it makes lectures interesting. There's only two tests and then weekly quizzes.
Pretty awesome course. Pretty awesome dude. I got an easy A+, I'm not sure if it was due to my high interest in A105. Just write his notes and review the notes often. I would miss MAYBE 1 or two questions on each exam and I am by no means an A+ student just due to my capabilities. I believe you would have to try NOT to get an A in this course.
He is a horrible professor. I have never taken physics before enrolling in college. You learn nothing from the lecture. All he does is derive equations that isnt helpful on the exams. The best way to study is to go online and do a lot of problems. Also trying to find exams from a friend will help. The lab section is awful, but show up for points.
Took summer AST105. MUST take notes and come to class everyday, or you will get behind. Sometimes he puts notes on the projector screen so you can use the notes if left on projector. Somewhat hard to keep up with notes in the beginning, but you get used to it later on. Kinda funny. Laughs at his own jokes. If you follow his timeline you are fine.
The key to getting an A in this class is showing up, writing down his lectures word for word, and studying your notes. I was stressed before the first test because I was so confused by the material, but as soon as I took the test and saw every question was from the notes, the course became immensely easier.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! Unless you're good at memorizing hundreds useless facts about the planets. This class is way too hard to be a 100 level class. Way too much memorization, and he acts like we have prior knowledge of the solar system and does not elaborate. Very very difficult.
Go to the lectures, pay attention, and take notes. That sets you up for an easy A. There is a weekly quiz and 3 exams. Curves the grade at the end of the semester. He can get off topic sometimes but he can be pretty funny. Overall, a very easy class.
Great professor. A lot of the in-class discussion will be far more advanced than is necessary for class, so try to enjoy it. Ask questions and become interested - it's really neat stuff. He answers questions if you ask, and the class becomes interesting. The tests are hard, so take good notes and study them, but he adjusts grades at the end.
Really fun professor to learn from. Kind to students and loves to answer questions or expand on side topics. Class was super easy, but you'll learn a lot in there. Weekly quizzes are ripped straight from the notes. Attendance isn't vital but the notes really do help on the quizzes and exams. Overall a really good professor and I'd take more classes
I loved this class! Hes a very smart dude and cares a lot about the subject. He doesnt take attendance but lectures are very important to go to as he doesnt post his notes anywhere. Theres a short quiz about once a week, but the quizzes and tests are directly from notes, so theyre straightforward. No papers or textbook reading!
Dr. Woodahl makes this class VERY fun! He makes lectures very engaging and enjoyable! It is YOUR job as a student to practice plenty and use your resources. He goes over how equations are derived, some examples, and some interesting history behind it.
Probably the funnest lectures I have every sat through in college so far. Very engaging and cracks hilarious jokes. He derives equations and their history and does a few example problems. The rest is up to you to practice. Are his notes the best? It's what you make of it, but practice lots and you will be fine.
Professor Woodahl is a very funny man. He takes boring material and makes it fun. Come to class and you will be fine on the exams (I averaged a B+ no outside studying). There are very few grades -- Quizzes every Monday (4 questions and based on previous class notes) and only 3 exams. Don't buy the book - he doesn't use it or leave chapters to read
This class was the reason my 3.6 GPA went right out the window. All he does is derive equations which is useless. The lab feels like a whole other class and the recitation is just pointless. So something tells me i might have to retake physics again in the future. But please be ready to teach yourself.
If you are a physics student, keep in mind that a lot of these reviews (like mine) are for astronomy. There isn't much I can say that hasn't already been said. He's a great lecturer. If you take good notes and study them, you will do well. I thought 105 was more interesting than 100. Also, there is no homework (besides studying)!
He does not explain thing very well in class so you have no idea what is on the exams. I do problems from the homework and book and I'm still not doing very well. He does not explain his grading because his TA's grade the exams. Even asking them for some explanation is not any help because they have no idea exactly what he is teaching.
Dont expect any help from your professor! The exams are absolutely ridiculous compared to the other professors that teach the course. Youre better off taking it at Ivy Tech and transferring the credits if your GPA matters to you.
I have nothing to say just he is a boring professor. He is a boring lecturer. He tries to be funny and he is just not.
P201 students- proceed with caution and get out while you can! He doesn't answer questions even when people raise their hands in class, is unapproachable and just derives equations the whole lecture time. If you know you're good at physics, you'll do well. Use Chegg for online homework! Exam grading is unfair, have to get at least 50% on each.
If you're not good at math or physics you will struggle with this class if you don't use other learning materials besides his notes. His lectures consist of deriving equations. Although his tests are somewhat easy, focus on learning not memorizing the concepts. Tests consist of 8 problems, and the average is a 65%.
Go to class and take notes, and study those notes and you will get an A
For the Fall 2020 semester, Professor Woodahl gave four non-cumulative exams. There is little guidance and exams are extremely difficult. He posts grades, no feedback, and did not even show us the last exam grade. I saw my final grade on my transcript! When I asked to see my scores he said that it makes no difference. He was the only option :(
Terrible, boring lectures and communication is lacking. This professor doesn't even post a syllabus.....
I ended up having to drop the class due to the lack of support from the professor and classmates. I feel like he has too many high expectations for students. This class MIGHT be good if you have taken physics in high school or a course previously. I feel like his expectations may be a little too high. Be prepared to take A LOT of notes in class.
Ended up having to drop the class.. would definitely recommend this course for people who took physics in the past. I had to drop the course due to lack of support from classmates and professor. Be prepared to take lots of notes.
Amazing professor. You can tell he is so interested in what he does, and a very knowledgeable person. He writes the notes that you need as you go along in class on the board so all you need to do is study those and you will be fine. The weekly quiz and exams are much easier than what is taught in class. Super interesting material as well.
Physics is a hard subject but Dr. Woodahl's lectures were engaging and he explained things as clear as possible so we could understand. Doing the homework on time will help you 100% so DO IT!! The exam problems are easier than the recitation problems so GO to recitation, and the exams offer partial credit, what more can you ask for?
Amazing professor. You can tell he is so interested in what he does, and a very knowledgeable person. He writes the notes that you need as you go along in class on the board so all you need to do is study those and you will be fine. The weekly quiz and exams are easier than what is taught in class. He always made class fun and made the class laugh.
Look. Professor Woodahl knows his stuff, but when it comes to being helpful with students, don't expect much. Extremely rude, doesn't put notes on Canvas as a resource. Very exam heavy too.
Your hand will cramp if you don't type. Easy class if you can keep up with the notes!
He taught in a way that made physics accessible and easily digestible. There's not a lot of homework in this class besides Mastering Physics, and he'll provide bonus points at the end for if you showed improvement between your exam grades. Exams aren't hard (8 open-ended problems, partial credit), and I recommend doing practice problems to study.
If this is your first time taking a physics course, I would not recommend this professor. Most of the lecture is deriving equations and he doesn't go over many example problems to be able to understand/use the equations. Also he goes through the lectures quick and doesn't provide notes, so you need to show up and write fast.
It's a rough class, but the professor does whatever he can to help you succeed. Be prepared to study a lot especially if its your first introduction to physics. He genuinely cares about the class and his students, and tries to make class entertaining as well. Can't stress this enough, do extra practice problems to review!
If this is your first physics course, good luck and prepare yourself. This class is extremely difficult, however, the teacher really does try his best to make the class more fun and eduational. Also KNOW THIS: if you do not have an average of 50% with all your classes, you WILL fail no matter what.
Prof. Woodahl does not give clear lecture notes that relate to his exams. He tends to ask for derivative equations on the exam but does not explain how to get to them during lecture. There is no clear way of how the exams are graded and expects you to find the answers with missing information.
Dr woodhal is very knowledgeable of the material and is passionate about it but he is extremely rude and does not help during office hours. He will turn his back to you and is frustrated when you understand “basic principles”. If you don't have a 50% average exam grades you'll fail. Class average exam scores are
Prof. Woodahl has definitely been one of the worst professors that I have had - I went to his office hours to find out how I did on a test and all he could say to me was the reason why I wasn't doing well was because it's where I come from (not USA) His tests are the worst things to ever exist - his lectures are no where near what's on the tests.
Tough class, but the professor tries his best to make it engaging. Attend every lecture and use unstuckstudy alongside the textbook to really grasp the concepts. With consistent effort, you can definitely succeed.
He is very distracted, jumps from topic to topic and often rants or lectures about things unrelated to the course, taking up a lot of time in a lecture period that is already crammed. He offers no help for anyone who is sick or otherwise disabled and unable to come to class, notes are not posted and lectures are never recorded. Do not skip!!
Professor does not provide feedback on tests to inform you what you missed. The three tests are the only things graded for whole class. Lectures are poorly recorded, making it hard to take notes. If the lessons were re recorded it would be bearable. Overall, not a great professor.
