Yates is straightforward with you up front. If you read and participate in class this class will not be too bad, and it wasn't for me. Sometimes his questions do not make sense, he is a bit confusing, and the paper prompt was kind of tough. If you do all the readings and participate during class, you should be fine. I liked him, others not so much

Really cool guy but very tough professor. I've never worked so hard for an A in my life. Most of his grading comes from class participation and reading quizzes that are impossible if you don't do the assigned readings. A really great guy, but he's a very demanding professor. You'll have to read every other day if you expect to ace the quizzes and midterm. He doesn't give any written homework, but the tradeoff of that is that you'll be drenched in readings. Even though this is a required class, do not take it with Yates- choose a diff prof. Material covers hundreds of years over numerous continents with no clear connection, and then he throws everything from the very long readings for a nearly impossible quiz. He will not answer questions clearly, and it is very frustrating. Do not take.

Yates is a nice person who cares a lot about history and current events, although he can be unorganized sometimes. This class requires a lot of weekly reading, there is also three papers, 4 quizzes, and you need to participate, which is fine if you read. Take this class if you are good at working hard and trying your best.

Dr. Yates is a nice professor, there's a lot of homework, a LOT, and a lot of readings to do, but to be honest if you just generally have an idea of what they're about you'll usually do fine as long as you read them over once or twice before the quiz. His class is demanding, but he's accessible outside of class and cares about his students.
