He really cares how he does lecturing and cares how all of his students do. Difficult material but he really tries to make it as easy to understand as possible.
Professor Zid rocks!! He moves quickly through lecture & the material is difficult, but he does his best to teach it in a way that his students understand. If you want A, you need to go to lecture and also be prepared to read the textbook outside of class for additional help. Zid truly cares about his students & wants the best for them!
Heavy assignments, hard exams, hard materials. But I do feel that I really learn something and that Brian cares a lot about us.
He isn't the best explainer in the world, but his lectures are fairly easy to understand, and he is very organized with the material. Thing is CHEM 6A is kind of annoying class in general, so much so that the band Switchfoot specifically wrote a song about it, but he makes it a little less annoying.
There's Group Work before class ends every now and then, it's easy. I was on my phone throughout the year, but the ample resources he provides on TritonEd is so darn helpful. HIs homework takes a good 1-2 hours to knockout and it's once a week. There's a quizzes in discussion that can be resubmitted for half the missed points and a group powerpoint
If you have somewhat of a background in Chem then this class should be an easy A. If you don't, Prof. Zid's lectures are moderately paced and goes into great depths in explaining concepts. He has 3 quizzes, 2 midterms, and 1 final with a generous grading policy. He has in class Group Work so attendance is mandatory. Class is both screencasted.
Professor Zid is a solid choice for Chem 6A. If you don't have a background in Chemistry, his lectures can be too fast-paced at times. However, if you complete his homework (once a week), you should be fine. He has 3 Quizzes, 2 Midterms and 1 Final which are all curved.
He's very knowledgeable about the subject but explains concepts in the most complicated way possible; his lectures are very easy to get lost in, and his tests, although usually fair and based off the homework and quizzes, are not curved. However, the discussions and his office hours are very helpful if you take the time to go to them.
Zid is an overall good professor. Attendance isn't explicitly mandatory in lecture but he assigns group works in lecture which are turned in for points. One allowed discussion absence.
He is really good at teaching and his exams are difficult but fair. Funny guy at times too. Homework every week with 20+ questions on each assignment
Very clear and easy to understand lectures. The exams are extremely challenging, but Zid makes the expectation clear and if you study it is possible to do well. His class isnt hard but he pushes you to learn and fully grasp the information. Overall a rewarding class to do good in.
He was very passionate and always answered questions. His pace was a bit fast for me
ZId is a solid Chem 6A choice. He explains well, but does go very fast. The material is not difficult and the tests and quizzes aren't too hard either. Go to class, because he does have "pop" class activities that you must write in hand and paper and turn in.
Zid felt like a really chill and clear professor (always communicated clearly about expectations). We did one lecture + HW a week which didn't feel too bad. Didn't give us final/midterm because of COVID, instead we had a learning check every two weeks which was fairly difficult (not too bad though). A very solid choice, would recommend!!
I would 100% recommend! The lectures are pre-recorded and come with skeleton notes. Chemistry is hard, but Zid makes the information easy to understand and enjoyable. There are 5 learning checks (aka quizzes) every 2 weeks. The learning checks are fair, easy to understand, and cover everything from the lectures, group activities, and homework.
Dr. Zid really cares about your well being and he also really wants you to succeed in his class. There are no midterm/final but instead there are 5 learning checks which are like 5 tests (each learning check covers 2 chapters; 2 hrs each). The learning check is not too difficult. Just do your required materials and you'll do just fine in his class.
I am not too experience with chemistry, but Zid teaches it well and he definitely cares about his students. We had 5 learning checks which are like tests that you get up to 2 hours for, since there are 4 questions that are 30 minutes each. He drops the lowest one of them, but they are pretty tough (atleast for me). You should be fine, with lectures
Dr. Zid is great! His lectures are recorded and asynchronous, but go over the material really well. There are five learning checks every other week, which can be a lot sometimes but are very straight-forward. All the other assignments make it easy to pad your grade a bit.
Chem 6A was a tough class after only taking reg chem in hs. His lectures were pretty slow so I watched them on 2x speed. (Fall 2020 COVID) Generally he explained things pretty well and was responsive to questions over email. The discussions are jsut group work on a POGIL led by a TA, mine was pretty chill. No specific complaints about Zid
Dr. Zid is great. He teaches very well but be aware that his learning checks tend to lean more on the conceptual side. And so learning checks (which are like tests) arent too easy. However, the questions you see on the learning checks are all material that hes covered (even though you may feel stuck on the question, youll realize he taught it).
He is extremely understanding about the current circumstances and his grading reflects it. His lectures can be confusing at times, but if you ever need something cleared up there is always office hours, discussion sections and the textbook.
Mr. Zid is an outstanding teacher. I found his lectures to be interesting and concise. While this class is material heavy, I think he does a great job of explaining the concepts and the way he grades is fair and equal throughout the course. Because of covid I did not get to meet him in person, but online he was great!
Dr. Zid is a great professor. I only gave him a 5 in difficulty because his assessments (learning checks) are concept heavy and each learning check is so long (2hrs each for 5 learning check in total). I definitely do recommend him; he teaches chemistry well. I wish I could have met him in person.
Dr. Zid is super sweet! His lectures were amazing and really helpful for me, and I thought he did a good job breaking down complex concepts into understandable language. I was a little intimidated by him at first, but he was always welcoming during office hours. His tests are very conceptual and a bit difficult, but they're fair and helped me learn
Professor Zid is amazing! He has pre-recorded lectures that makes hard material easily to understand. His office hours are very helpful and are a great opportunity to connect with him. If you go to them frequently, you're guaranteed to do well in the class. He really cares for the students and wants them to succeed. 100% would recommend!
The lectures were all asynchronous which was nice. They were always very clear and made it so the homework and exams were easy. Overall a really great choice for 6A.
This class was A LOT of work. A 1-2 hour lecture took me 8-10 hours to get through because of the amount of content, plus the additional textbook reading (which I would recommend). However, the way the exams were structured (5 mini exams) allowed many chances to make up a bad grade. Exams kind of like AP Chem FRQs. Would recommend!
Professor Zid is a young fellow who is very knowledgeable in the area of Chemistry. His lectures were easy to follow, as he allowed the use of skeleton notes that he provided. He makes all of his learning objectives very clear. His grading system is very generous as well. 10/10 highly recommend.
Professor Zid would often be 2 to 3 weeks ahead in lecture material than what was originally scheduled. This being said he vaguely and quickly went over the material and didn't provide many example problems. Midterm was extremely difficult and he makes you memorize a bunch of unnecessary info. Doesn't curve even when majority of class does poorly.
Zid goes through lectures really fast. His exams are written and very hard and often a step further than the homework. His grading is not forgiving either despite it being written. Don't take him.
Professor Zid is one of the nicest professors I've had. He takes the time to answer questions during lecture and go over practice problems so that we feel more equipped for the exams. Exams are fair with lots of partial credit- it's not black and white. Wish he was teaching the next level. All lectures are recorded and can be accessed online.
He tries to keep his lectures simple and makes sure only to focus on the things we really need to know. Holds review lectures before midterms and goes over concepts that will be on the test and is open to any questions. Workload isn't too heavy. Records lectures and going back through lecture podcasts is a great way to study for tests.
Professor Zid's powerpoint slides are concise and easy to follow. The exam content comes straight from the lecture slides, so the test won't contain info not covered in lecture. Lots of opportunities for partial credit on exams. He takes the time to answer questions during class and moves through lessons relatively quickly but it is manageable.
please trust me! If you didn't take AP Chem, it is going to be VERY difficult. it would've been nice to see the professor accommodate for everyone's type of learning. I just wish his pace was slower, I think we were on week 7 material during weeks 4-5, he doesn't elaborate. I felt played bc of his high ratings on RMP pls take my advice <3
WORST chemistry teacher. If you did not take AP chem you will not pass. All of the previous rating lied. Does not go into detail while teaching he expects you to know everything. Midterm grade average is a D. Don't recommend he doesn't care about his students at all. No curves, open ended exams, unnecessary hard when its gen. chem.
Really nice guy. Class is well organized. Honestly I found the class too easy and too slow which was fine. His midterms are so doable and his lectures are slow but he explains things and is very patient with students. He will spend as much time needed to make sure all questions are answered.
I will say you might struggle if you don't like calculations, as he's probably the most calculation based compared to the other professors. Besides this, he's honestly solid as long as you go over the learning objectives he provides. People say he goes too fast but he does it so we have more time to study the material before an exam.
a really nice professor. his exams mostly cover his lectures and a bit of the homework. his office hours are extremely helpful. you need to fully understand the concepts to do well on the exam-dont just memorize bullet points. go to office hours if you questions about the content or your exam/how it was graded!
Perfect chemistry teacher. If you listen to lectures and actually put in some effort it is very easy to get close to a 100 on all the tests. Midterms and final were very straightforward. Study the learning objectives conceptually and know how to do problems similar to those on the lecture slides. Don't listen to the bad reviews; they're just wrong.
At the beginning of the quarter he mentioned that he "simultaneously goes too fast and too slow" through lectures, and he sure wasn't lying. Every Powerpoint took 1.5-2 lectures to get through what other professors normally cover in 20-30 minutes, and he glazed over the barebones summary of each slide while giving barely any time to take notes.
Amazing! He answers your emails and actually cares about you. His lectures are very clear and his exams are straight forward as long as you understand everything on the lectures. He does go through the material very rapidly so if you have never taken chemistry before I do not recommend. The amount of homework is ok. Lectures are recorded
Out of my 4 professors for my first quarter of college, Brian cared the most. He was always quick to answer emails and he was very flexible with homework and testing. His tests are very hard, but if you study and come to his lectures then you will be prepared. Overall, Zid is an amazing professor and I am glad I took his class.
Dr. Zid is easily the best chemistry teacher I have EVER had. I will admit that I have had AP Chem experience in high school before which made it easier, but he is extremely explicit that his test content will come straight from the lecture. If you didn't learn it in class, it's not on the test, which is super helpful. Take notes and you're golden.
Amazing chem prof. I never took AP chem in high school and was still able to do well on midterms by making sure I understood all of the learning objectives and reviewing lecture problems. Very clear on what is on tests: if you didn't cover it in class, it's not on the test. Responds quickly to emails, office hours are very helpful.
I did take AP Chem, however, I found the class a bit difficult. There were weekly online hw for points and weekly discussions graded for participation. The two midterms weren't anything more advanced than what Professor went over in class in his examples. The final is easier and he replaces a midterm if your final grade is higher. I recommend!
Prof Zid wants students to learn and is very accommodating if you have to miss an exam. There are 2 midterms and since the class average was lower on the second exam than the first so he blamed himself for not teaching well enough and gave everyone a couple extra points. Having taken AP Chem the class was a breeze, but if not it can seem fast paced
Probably the best 6A professor. Always made time to answer questions and was accessible after class. Was pretty clear about what topics were on the midterms and always had review lectures. Midterms were a bit complicated, and he gave everyone extra points on the second one after the class average was lower than the first one. Overall a solid choice
Had an A- by the end of the quarter; decided to email him and he let me complete a homework assignment from weeks ago to reach an A. He's very caring about his students and is accessible outside of class. Tests are short answers with lots of partial credit. Lectures are very clear and as long as you watch them you should do fine on tests.
Reads slides and does not explain. Expects us to connect the dots (to an unreasonable extent) No reasons as to why one might not understand something, just blurs off with "it's difficult" or "it's beyond this course." No stream of consciousness, no guiding, just jumping from one thing to another with a "So." Nice dude but cannot teach.
Professor Zid is very excellent! He is patient, attentive, and caring. Definitely take his class! Everything in the course is perfectly arranged; the lectures are great, and he is so understanding.
Nicest professor I've ever met! Extremely caring and attentive. Professor Zid really cares about his students - spend a lot of time with students who are enthusiastic in science. He gives excellent lectures and provides students great opportunities to study. Don't hesitate to take his class!
Solid Professor, makes himself easily available outside lectures, even came to teach the discussion sections after the TAs went on strike, his lectures, along with some other form of supplementary help make his homework and his exams manageable. Just make sure to study and ask questions, he is one of the nicest professors on campus.
Professor Zid's teaching style is not very accessible for everyone, as in his lectures he uses fill-in-the-blank slides with around a couple vocab words added per slide. The first midterm was difficult, as it was a majority of mathematical questions and free-repsonse, though there are lots of opportunities for partial credit.
Took Professor Zid in FA21. Professor Zid is easily one of my favorite chemistry professors till date. Super helpful lecturer, answers questions very well. Tests were free response and VERY representative of homework and lecture content, not difficult if you study. If you have the opportunity to take him... do it.
Overall amazing professor, lectures aren't mandatory but I recommend going --podcasted if you can't make them. The first midterm is basically what the AP chem content was. He cares about his students a lot and taught discussion sections during the strike in place of TAs. 10/10 recommend, explains concepts well, and is open to questions & emails.
Professor Zid is a really good teacher for Chem 6A as he seems to always want the best for his students. This class is pretty difficult if you haven't taken chem in a while. If you do the homework and understand the practice problems, the exam is similar. The FRQ midterms were more difficult but partial credit helped.
Pretty good professor who always answers questions during lectures and is willing to put in effort to ensure that his students succeed. If you take this class with no prior knowledge of chemistry, you might struggle a bit. Doesn't give a lot of homework and his exams are pretty much based on lecture material. Overall would recommend.
Zid knew what he was talking about and was easy to talk to. The class was very calculation heavy compared to other chem 6a classes. Tests were free response which had its pros and cons. Overall, I learned a lot but I wouldn't recommend him if you do not have a lot of chem knowledge already.
Professor Zid is a wonderful prof. He genuinely cares about his students and will put the work into helping you. This class is hard! If you havent taken a chem class in a while go take Chem4 then come back. Midterms and the final are worth 60% of your grade. They are all short response. I recommend him if youre ready! Go to office hours 100%!!
Professor Zid is great! During the TA strike he would personally stand in for the TAs during discussion sections. The midterms and final were not too hard if you have taken chem before and are understanding/doing the homework. He does go fast during lectures, but there are podcasts you can look back on. Overall a chill and cool guy.
I had a really hard time in this class because I never took AP Chem and didnt know how to study in general. Super nice guy, gives dad of young girl vibes if that makes sense. He moves really quick and you NEED to either go to lecture or watch it online. I did fail both midterm and final, but I passed with a B because heavily pads grade w homework.
I took Zid for an elective chem class. He's the best chem professor at UCSD. Explains things clearly and simply. He is very dedicated and encouraging. During TA strikes, he went to every discussion. If you get the opportunity to take him, definitely do it!
Great professor, but sometimes the pace of the class was a little bit high in the most complex subjects. The PowerPoint slides went by fast, so you have to be focused on the whole lecture to take notes properly and understand the class. If you do that, you can get through the course.
I enjoyed this professor. His powerpoints are straightforward, easy to follow, and facilitate note-taking. I wish he taught more courses in chemistry. He makes it important to go to discussion sections in order to finish worksheets but I didn't mind that at all. Exams were easy. Structure of class and lists of assignments sets you up for success.
Brian Zid was very generous but he could not explain things easily for students. I trusted all his great ratings but was so disappointed. Having only taken one chemistry course in h.s, it was so difficult to do well in his class. Lectures are basically useless, you will have to teach yourself. Big curve at the end saved my grade.
Be warned, if you haven't taken AP Chem or IB Chem in high school, you will have hard time in his class. His lectures aren't helpful, and his lectures goes by very fast so if you miss a day, it will be hard to catch up. The discussions class aren't helpful at all either. But if you have taken AP Chem, this class should be okay.
if you havent taken AP chem, good luck fam
If you haven't taken AP chemistry before you will have a hard time. He is a very nice guy, but doest teach only reads off his slides and goes too fast. Not an intro course at all.
Like plenty of others have said, if you haven't take AP chem prior to this course, it's incredibly difficult. Don't get me wrong, Professor Zid is incredibly nice. However, his explanations are really difficult to understand for an introductory class. Most of what I have learned I learned from either my friends or from online.
there are easier chem 6a professors. He is a good explainer but a fast. not bad professor. Doesn't give any type of cheat sheet which all the other classes get. If you have a long journey of chem ahead then take him because you ill learn a lot but if you only have to take one chemistry class then don't take him cause he makes his class extra hard.
Zid is a fast lecturer, but his slides were straight forward and easy to read. Exam were straight forward with majority of it being mc. Homework was a little difficult due to limited attempts + deduction for every wrong attempt. Coming from a person that never took ap chem, if you consistent review each week and put the work in then it'll go fine!
Prof Zid was a bad lecturer. He is one of those teachers that say a lot but in reality, end up saying nothing. I basically ended up self-teaching the course to myself. The only good thing about the course was that his exams were straightforward, not tricky. Homework taught me more than the lectures did. Super sweet guy though.
The other people mentioning that not having taken AP Chem make this class extremely difficult are correct. Zid is kind and clearly enjoys chemistry, but his lectures are hard to follow for those not already familiar with the topics presented. The hardest topics are glossed over with a max of one practice problem being shown and little explanation.
As someone who didn't take AP Chem this class was hard. I spent 1-2 hours outside of class each week studying and reviewing but ultimately did fine. Tests and lectures were very straightforward and to the point. He doesn't try to trick you and the class is padded with hw and di projects. Many lectures ended early. Good prof if you put in the work.
Zid was a very straightforward and enthusiastic professor. He taught everything that would be on the exam and you should be good if you spend the time studying. Exams were mainly multiple choice. Just keep in mind that he doesn't do cheat sheets, I know some other 6A professors too and it can be a deal breaker for some people.
Professor Zid's lecture can be a bit tedious at times. But I would take him over some Chemistry professors in UCSD. A shame he only teaches CHEM 6A. Super accessible outside, had meetings with him from time to time. Curved a lot during midterms/final. Doesn't do cheat sheets, but has a reference sheet (didn't help except for the periodic table).
loved his chem class- very clear lectures and he was very passionate ab the subject! barely studied but paid attention in lecture
He's a cool guy. Don't change Zid. You the goat.
Zid is a good teacher/lecturer. However I would not recommend him to students taking 6a, as he is the only teacher (from what I have heard) that 1. doesn't allow cheat sheets, 2. does multiple choice AND short answer, 3. and his tests are always a week before every other chem class. but if you took chem honors, or AP you should be good
Zid reads from his slides, but is very knowledgeable when asked questions in lecture. Grade based upon 1 online hw per week, assignments in DI sections, and two midterms & a final. Very straightforward and a good lecturer.
I would definitely recommend taking Zid's class. He tells you everything you need to know for the exams. You don't get a cheat sheet, but you don't need one. He does practice problems that are due every week and the discussions aren't mandatory, but there is a worksheet due. He can be a little boring at times but otherwise is a good professor.
Gave us notes to fill out as he gave lectures. The lectures were very clear, he would explain a topic and also allow students to work through it themselves with practice problems. Every week had 2-5 pages of additional questions to study for midterms (midterms were ~75% MC, 25% FRQ). Discussions allow for group work but are not mandatory at all.
Awesome professor and you can tell he really likes what he does and cares for his students. Can go pretty fast during lecture but will answer your questions if you have any. Grade is based on homework due once week ranging from 15-20 question, two midterms, and a final. No cheat sheets allowed but he gives you a reference sheet.
Dr. Zid was great. He tends to speed through slides, but if you rewatch the lectures at a slower pace, it is easier to understand material. His TAs were amazing. There is weekly HW that can take some time, and no cheat sheets for exams. Discussion is not mandatory though which was great considering mine was late. I would gladly take Dr. Zid again.
For a gen chem class, this is pretty easy. If you have taken AP chem or CC chem it will be very easy for you. His exams are VERY reflective of what he lectures are on. 2 exams and a final make up 60% of your grade. Discussions aren't mandatory but are chill and a good time to get the section assignment done. I recommend this prof for chem 6A.
Great teacher with good lectures, but he speeds through quickly so it may be difficult to keep up. Tough class but he explains stuff well especially in office hours. Discussions are graded on completion not attendance so I stopped going after week 3 and just did the assignment. Tests are fair and reflective of lectures. Would definitely recommend.
Good grading structure as grade is weighted 60% exams, and 40% HW and POGILs. Final can replace a midterm grade as well. Exams do not surprise you with new content. Lectures are good, occasionally he goes a little fast but overall quite good. HW is reasonable as well.
Professor Zid was a great professor to have for chem 6a. I never took ap chem in high school so it was hard to understand some points he made but, he was understanding with every single one of his students. I had a medical emergency before the final and he allowed me to take a makeup exam on a later date. Would take again.
Never took chem so I struggled but he was so kind. He said it can be a hard class if you have 0 history of chem. I struggled but SI sessions helped me alot. His lectures are very reflective of his exams, no cheat sheet, no extra credit. HW was a frustrating software, my O-Chem friends struggled with it. Would rec taking chem 4 first if no chem hx.
He goes extremely fast, so be prepared to have the lecture content written down before coming to class or have an iPad with the slides downloaded. He is a good professor who clearly knows what he is talking about, and his midterm and final were very fair. Make sure to study up on concepts well.
Dr. Zid is a clear, effective lecturer! Optional discussion sections gave time to work on weekly worksheets graded on completion or weekly online homework with the opportunity to ask for help from TAs. Worksheets and HW help boost your grade which was mainly determined by 2 MTs and a Final. This course allows for a midterm to be dropped!
Midterms and final are very very hard but they are curved pretty heavily. His lectures are very fast with a lot of information all at once. I definitely would still go to lecture even though he doesn't take attendance.
I enjoyed the lectures because they were clear and understandable. The professor tells the students what to expect on the midterms and finals. I would recommend studying the lecture notes and doing the practice problems. The homework was fair and the TAs were friendly and approachable.
Def my favorite professor at UCSD so far! His lectures are easy to follow and he also posts skeleton notes, making it easier to take notes in class. His tests are fair and the avg was relatively high compared to midterms for other classes. My hs teacher didn't rly teach us chem but I was able to understand most of the materials from his lectures.
Brian Zid was a great teacher. His lectures were easily comprehensible, and he would explain questions that students asked clearly. One iffy thing initially was that he doesn't allow you to create a crib sheet for midterms or finals, but he does give you a formula sheet that has everything you need to know. Just need a bit of studying!
Best CHEM 6A prof to take during fall quarter. Would take any other chem classes with him if he taught besides 6A. Office hours were also very helpful.
Zid is goated, if you want a professor that teaches the material clearly, understands it well, and gives relatively easy tests he's great. I have friends taking 6A with other professors, and their tests are harder. Only gripe with this class is I feel that the discussion material didn't help me too much despite it being mandatory. Great prof tho
Good guy, okay professor. Struggled in this class because I had a bad chem background so if you took AP chem, you'll be fine. Goes fast in lectures that are also boring but after rewatching them I would get the concept(s). Homework assignments aren't bad. Tests are weighted 60% of grade!! No cheat sheet also.
amazing prof. lectures were alright, can go fast at times but if you took AP Chem, its just a review. If u didn't, good luck. Gave lots of points and explained the midterm rubric clearly. he was passionate about teaching the class and gave alot of helped in office hours. zid's the goat for a reason.
Professor Zid is by far the best science teacher I've had. His lectures are very easy to understand, and his way of teaching is very effective. Lectures weren't mandatory, but you could easily catch up if you missed anything. Would definitely recommend for anyone who wants to take Chem.
didn't take ap chem... he goes really fast for me. the material is digestible, the formula sheet saved me on the midterms and he has a lenient homework policy. good basis for chem6a
Not taking AP Chem def makes the class a little harder, he's an okay lecturer. He moves through material really fast but talks really slow at the same time? He does podcast, which is helpful, and his midterms are pretty fair.
Great dude. Didn't do AP Chem and this class was honestly really hard for me. Had to self-teach myself a lotta things as he just goes too fast for me. You'll be fine if you have a background in chem, are passionate in it, and can keep up with his pace. Most other 6A profs don't cover as much content as him, and no cheat sheet besides formula sheet.
A great prof. the HW and the discussion work is a chore, but he cared if we did well on his tests i.e he let us stay over the time limit during midterms and finals to let us finish AND he went over basically everything that was going to be on the test the lecture before the exams. Legit the goat behavior.
easy if u did ap chem. great science teacher.
Even though most of the grade consists of exams, Dr. Zid's lectures tell you exactly what you need to know to prepare. His office hours are helpful, and he truly cares about his students. The textbook is required for homework, but it covers more information than what is necessary.
Professor Zid was amazing! His lectures were well paced. I like to say they were slow enough to where you wouldn't fall behind, but fast enough to force you to remain engaged. If you attend lecture and do all the homework, you will be well prepared. Go to his office if you have a question! He is very helpful and willing.
Compared to other chem 6a professors his class and exams were a little more difficult (we don't have a cheat sheet, have frq's, etc). However, he is a great professor and teaches the content well in his lectures. He tells us what will be on his exams, and if you show up and take notes you will be fine.
Zid is my goat. Office hours were great, and lectures were very comprehensive.
