One of the best Classics professors I've ever had. Easy to understand and humorous. Talks about surfing A LOT. And he's hot!
Uses tons of Slides (reuses most several times). Exams are just One essay and some IDs from the slides. IDs NOT what he emphasizes. Be prepared to work hard. He is willing to help you if you need it, but he takes a long time to reply to emails.
Definitely not the easiest A you can get from a Classics professor, but surely one of the best professors you can take a course from and not be bored out of your mind. He keeps things interesting, is easy to talk to, and not bad to look at either.
Not an easy A but he keeps the class interesting. Humorous in that he will talk about random stuff a lot...like him surfing a lot...I don't fall asleep in his class which is a plus.

Im taking the greek myth class right now and i think the reason im doing well in it is becuase he makes me interested in learning...he has a great sense of humor, and is very friendly...i want to take more of his courses!!
hes very energetic and passionate about what he does. i almost want to become an archeologist because of how cool he makes it seem. i love going to lecture, even on fridays, because hes just so hilarious. totally recommend him to anyone.
Erickson is AWESOME! his lectures are fun, he has a great sense of humor, and his tests are super easy. he definitely makes the class entertaining and worth taking.
This guy is hilarious, makes class really fun, especially if you have any interest in myth prior to the class. There's a ton of reading but it's generally pretty interesting.
he's AWESOME!! has a lot of experience in the area and really engaging lecturer. He's really funny too - not afraid to make the inappropriate sexual comments! overall..lots of reading and the section is required but REALLY FUN!! and if you remotely LIKE greek myth - it's an even better experience!
Very passionate about the subject. Interesting and funny. Do your reading though, test are very thorough.
Great guy. Loves to teach and still maintain a comfortable atmosphere. Always makes a few good jokes per class, no need to fake laugh, his jokes actually are funny. Take this class if he teaches it!
professor erickson was just so enthusiastic and really enjoyed teaching the subject, which made it fun to go to class everyday. Great class, with great lectures.
Very funny and interesting lectures. He seems to really enjoy what he's teaching.
He makes the subject matter very interesting, at least I thought so. He's kindof a dork, and he makes lots of jokes. I really enjoyed the class.
Erickson is an awesome guy and a great teacher. I didn't always read, but I came to 95% of the lectures, and since he goes over the reading so well, I still got a B. It's not hard to pay attention and have fun.
WOW...I dont know what class all these people went to, but I thought that was one of the most awful classes ever. It is so slow and he is extremely unorganized. His slides are random and his lectures are pointless. His class objective is unclear, I gained absolutley nothing from his class.
A good latin professor. The class is actually sort of interesting and not as painful as expected. Watch out for 100% or nothing quizes. He could do better with explaining grammer. He goes just a little to fast at times. He can be funny at times. We do have to learn meter.
Erickson is AWESOME! he is one of the best professors i've had so far!! the lectures are fun and interesting! there is a lot of reading but i recommend you only buy the reader because it explains in detail about the other books required. TAKE THIS CLASS!
One word...AMAZING. This class was so interesting, and he is so passionate about his subjects. The lectures were always funny and he keeps yu awake. Expect a lot of reading, and there are 4 quizzes as well as a midterm, final and a 5 page paper. So, work hard!
He is really funny and just a good guy.
He was really funny and is really into teaching. I loved this class
He is an amazing professor who knows his stuff and has a great ability to keep you interested. The assigned paper topic was actually fun and he likes to incorporate movies into his lectures. And he is the most adorable professor ever!
He is so enthusiastic about the subject and makes you like it too. The paper topic was on a movie and was really fun. He also likes to tell funny stories in class; he's very personable.
Awesome teacher, very passionate, very very intresting lectures you shouldnt' miss them! However, its a LOT of reading if you're not interested in the topic. You can get a C w/o reading, I would guess. He explains a lot in lecture. Definately a great professor though
Great professor- he's very helpful, friendly and hyper. The course itself is rather challenging. There is sight reading on the midterm and final and we have to learn meter.
Awesome professor. He talks a lot about his own experiences in the field, which is a lot of fun. He's always available to help if you are having trouble understanding. Don't miss lecture though, there's a lot of in-class activities.
Cool lectures, fun paper topic... all in all i liked going to class, which is good because its pretty important
I dont really like him every much... he lost my paper! and he wouldnt let me turn in another one even though i proved it to him that i had it done on time!!!
I love your classes, however you make a student go broke with the cost of books for your class. Try to tone it down or put more into the reader so we have less primary sources to buy. Over all great class, but come on do you really think that UCSB students go to cocktail hours at fancy museums??? Hell no we drink in IV.
Best lecturer I've had.
class is never dull with erickson. He tells jokes, stories and sort of bounces around during lecture. He's a lot of fun and you can tell he's excited by the bouncing in place when he talks. Attending class is key. Great professor!
the lectures are a lot of fun because of his enthusiasm and jokes. always interesting, but it is a lot of work.
Super fun lectures, he enjoys teaching and will make you laugh. He really knows his stuff. His tests are tough; he wants you to prove you've learned the material. Challenging, but never dull.
Worst lecturer ever! Everything is disorganized and it's impossible to predict what he will test on. The quizzes are very challenging, and beware that he assigns a five-page paper. Do not fall for his comedy. You won't be laughing when you get to the exams.
Professor Erickson is great. He is extremely enthusiastic and his teaching style makes lectures entertaining while you still learn a lot. I would highly recommend him to anyone. There is only one paper and the quizes are easy as long as you keep up with the reading and go to lecture.
He is a great lecturer, he really tries to engage the class and he goes out of his way to make things fun and interesting. seems like a pretty cool guy
very enthusiastic, but he assigns way too much reading, and his quizzes are really hard. a challenging class/prof for a GE requirement, and he tests on very detailed issues, so u really have to study and know ur stuff. i would have taken it with someone easier if i had known.
this class suuuuuuuucks..... there is way too much reading and his quizes and tests are extremely specific.... i used to love greek mythology until this class
Good Lecturer but his quizzes and tests are way too hard and specific. MOst of the questions are from the reading and not from the lectures. made me hate greek mythology take it with someone easier unless you have had an extensive couse in greek mythology already
WAY too much reading. Tests are quite complex, and quizzes too. I suggest taking this with a different professor. I now Hate Greek mythology....
One of the best classes i have taken at this university. He is a great professor that understands the material and helps you understand it. Very interesting and fun. I love Professor Erickson!
OMG he's the best ever! Not to mention really hot. Soooo funny. This is a great class. He's always making jokes and he plays good movie clips a lot...there's a lot of reading and the memorization is crazy, but I loved this class. Not easy, but not too difficult..just right I'd say. VERY interesting subject and a lot of fun to learn...take it!!!
I think Erickson is one of the greatest professors that I have found here. He's funny, really knows what he is talking about and loves his subject. Yeah, the tests are specific. The study of mythology requires specific details to understand it, that's just how it is. You're given all of the information you need to know. It's great. take this class.
He is not that difficult. I got a B without trying really hard. The class is interesting because it is about Greeks, but this professor is a dork. He is a wannabe Greek and his jokes are terrible.
He was friendly and all together interesting. he surfs, and plays will smith music...what more could you ask for?
I loved this class and prof erickson. He is such a goof and he makes lots of bad jokes which makes him so adorable. The material was interesting and the tests were fairly easy. Make sure to go to lecture and discussion, and do the readings and you will do well in the class.
Funny professor, kind of a klutz, and spits a little when he get's really riled up about a subject he likes (but then again who doesn't?), a warning for those who want to sit in the front row. He really enjoys what he teaches, and is very clear in teaching. Lecture's pretty important, homework and field trip's are a MUST. Take this class.
Not very good. He is good with the fufu classes like myth, but not the upper division language classes. I found myself drowning in work and he was not helpful and frequently got his latin translations wrong. Some students even had to correct his Latin. Steer clear of this one

As a person, he is enjoyable, but as a lecturer, he is not. Lectures are very fast, not much time to take notes. Reading is far too in-depth and way more than necessary. Tests and quizzes are overly difficult and detail/memorization-based. The material is interesting, but take it with a different professor.
Funny teacher. His lectures are pretty interesting and he does a good job at keeping the audience engaged. His midterms are easy. For Classics 40 (Greek Mythology) the material is pretty manageable. Even though the readings are long the text book does a very good job at summarizing the material and lecture finalizes that.
Loved going to class because Erickson is so goofy and entertaining. However, he makes mistakes about his facts sometimes, and if you don't go to lecture, most of the material he covers is also in the readings, if you can get through it. Midterm was reasonable, paper is fun to write, and the final was easy. A good, enjoyable class to use for GEs
Erickson is so goofy and loveable. his lectures are very interesting and entertaining. i looked forward to his class. tests were easy and the paper was fun to write. the class is a lot of reading which has to be done o get a good grade. overall a great class, i would definitly suggest it.
Overall great and enthusiastic professor, even though he does make the occasional error. A lot of reading, but the class is still enjoyable. Stinker with his honors discussion section, though...
A very fun and entertaining professor. The class was enjoyable overall. There was lots of reading but the professor does a good job of summarizing most of it. The tests were pretty easy and the paper was fun to write.
Ya sure he is interested in the subject but he is not clear about directions on assignments, he ALWAYS lets you out late EVERY SINGLE DAY, the midterm and final are hard because basically it's like an art history class. he posts a slide and you have to identify it and also write an essay.. the papers in his class are poorly graded. but ya he's nice
Amazing professor! I loved this class! He's really enthusiastic, friendly and funny (in a cheesy way). The midterm and final were pretty easy. Lectures and section are important, especially if you didn't read. I didn't read most of the books. The paper is also pretty easy, but it also depends on your TA. Overall, great professor and great class!
He makes class interesting and teaches in a way that everyone can understand.
Sure, he's funny and approachable, but his teaching? He jumps around from the myths & Gds w/o really taking time to slowly describe the importance. He didn't even write the midterm, he had his T.A.s do it. Avrge was a C- (this is a GE class) and my personal Final SG is 26 pages, half of which still looks like Gibberish to me. TONS OF READING.GLuck
He's a really goofy guy which makes the class more intriguing. I only went to lecture & I had a good understanding of the material because he goes over it decently. Don't go into the class thinking mythology is logical, it's not.
Awesome teacher! He was hilarious and able to make a random subject very interesting. It isn't really necessary to read all the books to get a good grade. Just read the main textbook and show up to lecture and you'll be fine.
looked like he got some good reviews. Maybe he got complacent this quarter. But for Fall2012, he wrote his midterm the night before, couldn't even get his own questions correct when he took it, the TA says he was too lazy to create a gauchospace page, and the class averaged a 68% on the midterm. Greek Myth was a fascination of mine since a kid.
I am interested in learning about greek mythology prior to taking this course, so when I was actually taking this class, i did not find any difficulty to concentrating on reading the textbook. Yes, i think it is really important to read the textbook to have a clear understanding of the lectures and the sections. Fairly easy class.
Great Professor, LOVE HIM to death....Class 40 you have to read to get a good grade, and if not at least attend all lectures...Class 50 was the first class i took with him, and hes amazing lots of terms to know for a 10 term test, but still amazing lecturer... I will surely take another of his classes
LOVE HIM. If you are at all interested in ancient Greece/Rome and willing to put work into his class, you will do well. If you are in one of his smaller classes, make an effort to see him after class and in office hours, he appreciates when you put effort into his class. He takes this into account IF he remembers you, but he is a little scattered.
BEST lecturer I've had at UCSB...really funny and knows his stuff. Only thing is, the tests are picture IDs and 1 essay and they require you to intensively pay attention in lecture in order to do well. If you miss one little thing you could be screwed...just my take. If you don't do scattered, this class isn't for you.
Professor Erickson is an intriguing lecturer, but I didn't like how he is so obsessed with Greece and shows it while teaching a class about Italy. I love Italy and wanted to know more about it, not Greece. However, the class is super easy! I put almost no though into the test and paper and got a B+ on both. Btw, he lets you out late EVERY day. :(
Professor Erickson is by far the BEST professor I have had here at UCSB! Take his Classics 40 class to be intrigued and entertained. He is an incredible lecturer and you can really tell that he loves what he teaches. He is so personable and easy to talk to one on one in office hours. HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING CLASS40 WITH HIM!
Takes an interesting subject and makes it boring, in my opinion. This class was supposed to be about Greek Mythology but ended up being an archaeology class. We looked at waaay too many cracked pots and ancient broken buildings.
Our midterm and final were based on lecture. Take good, organized notes on your laptop and you can do really well. I took it PNP because section is worth 25% and I missed it a lot, but I did really well on the midterm and paper so I was okay. Material itself is cool and the paper was fun to write. Brice is really corny and fun. Take it pnp for GE
He was charming, charismatic, and funny. However the content of the class was pretty boring. It was heavily architecture based, had a lot of boring reading, and I didn't fall in love with the subject at all. I wish he had spent more time lecturing on the stories. I am glad I took it PNP. Too many books you have to buy$$$. I just sparknoted.
Took this class as a GE, and ended up REALLY enjoying it! I rented the book but only read it ONCE... go to lecture- all you need to know without spending money on the book! Over 100+ terms you have to know for the midterm/final (object, dates, location, significance) but do-able! He is flexible on dates- I went to office hours and got points back!
Great class, you must go to and pay attention to lectures. The tests are just pictures of some of the things we talked about so actually gathering the information is a must. He makes them interesting though, so don't worry.
Really funny lecture, but make sure you go to them cause it actually helps.
Love the energy and passion. That being said, his slides are terribly organized. If you don't have a laptop or a recording device when taking notes, you'll be screwed. Posting slides online is basically pointless because its mostly pictures. Very specific test questions. Expects you to memorize EVERYTHING. more about memorization than understanding
Erickson is great! You can tell that he's passionate about Greek Myth. It's all interesting information so it's not hard to remember. Just make sure you go to lecture, he explains everything, even the readings he assigned, in depth. 1 paper that's only 5 pages, a midterm and a final. Great GE to take!
please dont take this class.. it sucks. its hard and the lectures are sooooo boring, but if you dont go you dont pass.
He's super passionate about greek myth, and greece in general. he's also really funny and he showed us music videos before class which was AWESOME. it's also in general just a really easy class. 10/10 would recommend
Erickson is very enthusiastic and lectures were fun. I personally thought first half of quarter was amazing (gods), but when we moved onto heroes I was always bored & could never stay focused. I had no idea what was going on. Lots of names to remember. But he makes up for it b/c of his personality. Didnt do any readings and still got a B. Recommend
Cool professor. bad class. he's passionate/eager bout the subject. ALOT of reading /books & memorization required. Slides were NOT organized. 80% were archeology pics (he's an archeologist) Hard to follow if you don't go to class or don't take good notes. Depending on the TA, you either get assigned weekly writings OR quizes.
If you need to or want to take Greek Myth, then make sure you take it with Erickson. The man is amazing and his passion for the subject along with his personality keeps the class engaged. Honestly, it's because of him that I'm most likely going to take Classics as a double major. By far one of the best professors I've had thus far.
Professor Erickson gives super interesting lectures and seems very passionate about the subject. The class definitely requires some effort so not the easiest A but definitely worth taking this class.
The class was good, and the the professor teaches it really well and makes it interesting. You can get away with sparknotes and online resources if you need to, but youll definitely need to buy the reader, though, which he'll tell you about on the first week. Watch out - you never know for sure what material will be on the tests
I loved taking his Greek Mythology class. I didn't do all of the readings, but I went to every lecture and that helped a lot.
I LOVED Clas40-GreekMyth. We had one essay due at the end of the quarter, but it was a breeze and you are given the prompt at the beginning of the quarter
I loved this class. Erickson is clearly very passionate about Greek Mythology and he conveys that passion through his lectures. He assigns reading (not much) after every class but really if you pay attention and take good notes during lectures you wont have to do the reading. Overall it was a very easy A. One of my favorite classes at UCSB so far.
Best professor I've ever had, every time he teaches a course here I sign up for it. He is an incredible teacher, really funny, and has a way of making anybody interested in the course material.
He was an awesome professor and really enthusiastic about the course. The class may be lecture heavy but its easy to sit in and listen to him cause he makes it fun. However, I did notice that for this class, I didn't really need the readings to pass.
He's enthusiastic but I found that he is difficult to follow along at times. His lectures have maybe 10-20 words on the entire set, otherwise it's just pictures... Meaning the notes you take are the notes you study, so you better go to class and pay attention... The notes you have will either make this class hard or easy for you. His tests are fair
Had very interesting lectures and if you pay attention, the material is easy to understand. However, for the midterm and final, he pulls 6 out of 100+ terms to focus on in depth, so studying does take a great amount of time if you want to do well on these.
Very heartfelt, interesting lecturer. I hope his mom reads this. Probably the most enthusiastic, fun lecturer I have had so far maybe up there with Daryl Cooper! If you sit in the first 3 rows he makes eye contact with you!
Interesting teacher. Talked about drinking games in class that ancient Greeks use to play.
Great teacher to have for classics. His passion for the class rubbed off on me and I never wanted to skip class. Midterm and Final seem like they would be hard but are actually not, if you go to class and pay attention it's very obvious what terms you must study. Notes are extremely important but so is just sitting back and taking all the info in.
fantastic teacher & lecture, great class!!! my favorite professor at UCSB
Erickson is a great guy; he clearly has a passion for the subject and is an enthusiastic lecturer. However, his lectures are quite long and unorganized, and his slides have virtually no content on them besides pictures. Attending class is a necessity, but it's very difficult to take notes. Exams are also a little too specific, with trivial details.
Erickson is my favorite professor so far at UCSB! His lectures are funny and engaging and he makes you interested in the subject. Tests and grading is really fair but you need to attend lecture to pass. Best professor to take Greek myth with!
Erickson is a great professor, and makes greek myth interesting. Summarizes readings in class, buying books isn't necessary. Because he is an archaeologist, the class involves a lot of memorizing buildings, sites, pictures. Can get annoying to have to know every picture on a vase. Midterm and final are slightly hard(and super specific), but MC.
One of the best professors at UCSB. Exams were a bit specific and averages were around a C- if I remember correctly.
Midterm and Final are super specific, so make sure you really do study although it is hard because he doesn't give you a study guide. There are a lot of terms and information so it is hard to focus on what you really have to know for the tests. Professor Erickson is a great lecturer, but it can be hard to stay interested during lecture.
His midterm and final were very specific since they were based on what he lectures on meaning YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS. Dont need to read all the books, just the ones he talks a lot about. Very funny guy! Loved his approach. I got a D on the midterm and a C on the final but a B overall so a really easy class to pass. Totally recommend!!!
Erickson's lectures were engaging, but the slides only have pictures so be ready to write/type fast. Midterm is harder than you'd expect, final was a breeze. You might have to write essays in section depending on what TA you get. The final paper was super easy. Overall the class was fine, not worth stressing over.
Lectures are great, take notes and you will pass.
Professor Erickson is one of the best professors. He's really entertaining and will keep you engaged and laughing the entire lecture. His exams are relatively easy if you go to class and pay attention. The readings aren't really necessary since he summarizes the readings in lecture, so make sure you go! You won't regret taking his class.
He's passionate and engaging. However, you will likely not know your grade going into the final. The midterm and final require a LOT of studying, but there is little other homework or readings. While attendance isn't mandatory, show up and take good notes because it is 100% of the material tested. cons: doesn't reply to emails and grades slowly.
Prof Erickson is a very good lecturer and very passionate about Greek Archeology. Be prepared for a lot of memorization for a very fair midterm and final. He gives you a list of ID terms before the midterm/final and chooses a few key ones for the test. If you go to lecture and study you will get an A.
Prof Erickson is engaging, energetic, & makes information that seems dull really interesting. Although he didn't take attendance in CLAS50, it was necessary to go to class because his slides have only a few pictures or words, described more in lecture. Midterm & final were almost strictly memorization. I would definitely take his class again.
Tremendous! Professor Erickson is an amazing professor who is extremely passionate about what he does. He makes he content very interesting and always throws in jokes to crack up the class. My favorite professor at UCSB without a doubt.
erickson is a good professor who tries to make his lectures entertaining. while lecture isn't mandatory, section is. there is some reading, but I didn't do it and still passed. there is a midterm, paper, and final. the class is interesting, and I recommend
The best professor I have ever had in UCSB. Take his class for sure!
Gives good lectures but his slides barely have anything written on it, just pictures. The midterm and the final is lecture-based so you don't have to read as long as you pay attention in class. He talks A LOT so it gets a little confusing. His lectures are funny and engaging.
Erickson is amazing and a really good professor. He is really passionate about what he does and describes and analyzes myths in a clear, understandable, and fun way. His tests are super easy and his final paper is pretty interesting as well. Fun and easy class. He even shows music videos at the beginning of class and lots of movie clips.
My favorite professor till now. The materials are interesting and he's a great story teller. He can even make exams funny.
I loved this class! Professor Anderson is very dynamic and makes the lectures entertaining. You should attend lectures; he posts the slides online but there are only images.
Erickson is by far one of the best lecturers. He's extremely passionate and knows his stuff inside and out which makes his lectures so fluid and clear. Going to lecture is a must because then you'll understand the slides, and reading isn't necessary if you go to lecture. Very enjoyable class with interesting material. He's also hilarious.
His slideshows are a bit disorganized bc they're all just pictures, and he's a bit hard to follow in class. The readings are hard to understand and he just goes over them in class anyway. There was one paper at the end of the quarter but it was pretty short, and the midterm and final were both MC. He also has some spicy takes on pop media.
this professor doesnt let his TAs post grades on Gauchospace, so i had no idea what my actual grade was even after i took the final. this professor is very lecture heavy, so its important to go to class. but still this professor is wack for not posting grades online when the Internet is so prevalent in this age.
Brice is one of the best professors I've ever had. He's SO funny, and he made me want to go to lecture purely for entertainment. He's passionate about what he teaches, but he keeps things fun. He basically told us the answers to the first five questions on the final. I would take a class about how sidewalks are made if Brice was the one teaching it
greek myth is really fascinating. one of the best courses at ucsb. I did bad in midterm bc I didn't pay attention and didn't know about the myths in first half of quarter. then I just understood the myths as if they were stories after that and I passed the class. the final was really easy. I recommend this class.
This class was harder than I expected. Lectures are funny but the slides are disorganized & only helpful if you pay really close attention. You also have to at least read sparknotes for all the readings or you'll fail the midterm & the final b/c they're specific. One paper that was easy. Ended up taking it PNP b/c I tanked the midterm. Study!
Great professor, even better person. Always starts class with jokes and it's difficult to get bored as you listen to him lecture. There are a lot of readings, but they aren't necessary with his lectures honestly. Powerpoints are sparse, mostly pictures -- take in-depth notes on what he says so you remember it for the midterm/final
oh god i love erickson. I took Greek myth with him and i absolutely loved the class! he was always super passionate about every topic and always cracks jokes to keep us awake. i didn't do any of the readings, but attended every lecture and took good notes on everything mentioned and did well in the class. tl;dr : go to class and take good notes!!
He is the BEST!!!! It's a bliss if you get him as your professor. The class content is a lot of fun, and he gives the best lecture. He is definitely knowledgeable about mythology and you will learn so much more from his lecture than the reading itself. Although there are a lot of readings, 99% are stories that are interesting to read.
Proff Erickson is an amazing lecturer! Hes really funny and super passionate about what hes teaching so lectures are always fun. Youd be fine with not reading the books and merely reading summaries, he goes over everything in class really well
A humorous and knowledgeble prof. Attractive and amazing lectures The prompt of paper is interesting. He is the best!
Professor Erickson just might be the FUNNIEST professor I have ever had. This comes from his true knowledge and passion for the material at hand. I was actually excited and looking forward to lecture because it was like entertainment to me. On the midterm and final, he would literally give us the answers to some of the questions. LOVE HIM!
Erickson is amazing and made the class so funny. I enjoyed going to lecture. You only have to write one paper and its not very hard. I read most of the material but you dont have to if youre good at spark notes.
Loved Erickson and his class. I didnt read any of the material, but still got an A. Just go to class and pay attention during lecture. Hes very passionate about what he teaches and I highly recommend taking the honors section. The grading is also 25% section participation, 25% midterm, 25% paper, 25% final so its easy to get a good grade.
Erickson is a fantastic lecturer who keeps it light and fun. I already was very familiar with Greek Mythology going into the class, so it was a breeze. Probably could have gotten an A without doing readings but they were interesting enough that I didn't mind. Big discrepancy in readings from night to night.
Erickson is such a funny and informative lecturer. I looked forward to his class every week. You can probably get away with not reading if you take good notes. Only one paper and it's not bad at all.
Professor Erickson has been one of my favorite professors at UCSB! His lectures are very interesting because he is passionate and enthusiastic about what he teaches. If youre considering this class, take it 100% (Percy Jackson knowledge comes in handy in this one).
This guy knows how to teach a class! Always had funny little blurbs to tell throughout class, and the material itself was presented in a compelling way. I found that skimming the reading was enough, as the tests were based entirely on the lectures, which were dense but interesting. The tests were fair, but you will have to study a bit.
Honestly such a nice guy and clearly into what he teaches. Actually cares about the material. Also super organized and easy to follow during online class. Minimal work, mostly just reading and work for section.
When taking this class online, there is no interaction between the prof and his students. I had no contact with him at all. However, he gives good explanations in lecture, so there was no real need to contact him with questions about the material.
I took this class online, and though I never spoke with Brice individually, I loved his lectures so much! His lectures were clear, interesting, and he cracks jokes every once in a while! His class structure is clear and easy to follow which I appreciate, and he definitely prepares you for the assignments and assessments he gives! I also loved my TA
His lectures were prerecorded and he provided the lecture slides. He is so funny and his lectures are very clear and easy to follow. Definitely recommend this professor for CLASS 40.
The class is really lecture and reading heavy, but the class isn't bad. But, I thought I liked Greek myth before this class and now realize I don't. Section is once a week and mandatory. You're graded by participation in section, midterm, final essay, and a multiple choice final. Overall, okay class, just kind of boring .
Very passionate about Greek Mythology. I enjoyed his lectures! But this class was not as easy as I thought.
Very informative and passionate person/lecturer. The class overall however was way more difficult than I would have expected. A midterm in an essay format, a paper, weekly discussions, a synchronous MC final, and can't forget a lot of reading. Make sure to get your writing up to par. Sadly, no writing credit from this course.
this class was only easy for me because my TA was amazing. You never interact with the professor, and from what I've heard, he isn't very transparent with the TA's. if you're someone who gets stressed when you aren't given clear directions or aren't given study guides/examples then this isn't the class for you. also, don't bother reading.
Has really interesting lectures and he seems really passionate about Greek mythology. There are lots of readings and they're honestly not really necessary since he goes over the most important parts in class. There are a few writing assignments but luckily my TA was really nice. The final multiple choice was really easy too.
Lectures are completely asynchronous and posted in 2030 minute lectures (3-5 videos a week); I actually preferred it this way & the professor made each lecture really interesting. Only downside is the amount of writing involved even though the course doesn't cover any writing credits.
Professor erkison is a fun guy who is super passionate about what he is teaching. His excitement is infectious and makes the class super interesting.
I only skimmed the lectures and read the SparkNotes for the myths I ended up with an A in the class. Professor Erickson is very passionate about the subject but he tends to get off topic during his lectures and talks about the history, geography, and archeological backgrounds of the myths when its not necessary for the class.
THE most amazing lectures ive seen at UCSB. He makes things so easy to follow while being informative and interesting. I would highly recommend this prof and course, although the workload is dependent on your TA and some sections ended up with lots of tedious work. Besides this, I would highly recommend!
Funny guy, enjoyable lectures. Subject matter was interesting. You didn't really have to do the readings if you paid attention to the lectures. MC weekly quizzes, midterm essay, writing assignment, & MC final.
Great pre-recorded lectures that felt engaging. Lots of reading, but you can get away with skipping some and just watching the lectures (especially if you take good notes on them).
Never really got to meet Erickson but his pre-recorded lecture were engaging and you could immediately tell he's passionate about what he teaches. The midterm (2 essays due in 1 day) almost screwed me over but I got a good grade for the big paper & a 100 for the final and ended up with an A :D Quite a bit of reading but a super interesting course!
Hes awesome honestly. Greek myth was a very interesting class and he is clearly passionate about it. LOVE
Took this class because of how much I loved CLASS 40 with this professor and was not disappointed! SUCH an amazing lecturer and so knowledgeable in his field. Must attend all classes though because recordings or slide info arent posted and the midterm and final are very heavy on memorization. Besides the midterm and final, very light coursework!
No homework and just a midterm and final that require a hefty amount of memorization and studying. Attending class is essential since he says all the important info.
One of my first professors here and he was an utter delight. His tests are purely based on the lectures and they were always incredibly entertaining and uplifting! The main thing for this class is getting a good TA for the paper and you are set!
Professor Erickson has been one of my favorite professors so far at UCSB. I took this Pompeii class spring 2022 and it has been one of the best courses I have ever taken at UCSB. Very engaging lectures, light workload (only a midterm and a final), and overall great class. You have to go to class to pass, but I honestly enjoyed going!
He's really funny and chill a bit all over the place and hard to follow because there's little structure. But super fun to listen to and interactive with the audience he knows a lot about what he is talking about. Incredibly easy class literally no work.
Erickson is a funny guy, and he always makes lectures engaging. Overall, there are not many opportunities to get grades, but as long as you somewhat pay attention and take a few notes, papers and final aren't that hard.
I had a lot of fun in this class, if you're looking for a GE class that's a nice break I'd say to take this class. Erickson always made lecture really fun and full of information so I would never have to do the reading and still understood what was going on. The only really challenging parts were the papers which were graded by the TAs.
Erickson is a cool dude, but when it comes to GreekMyth, it is a very chaotic class. His powerpoints online contained little to no information so you would HAVE to go to lecture to know what is going on. The homework was lots of reading. He barely responds to emails and he jumps around a lot in class which can be confusing. Interesting but chaotic.
Super funny! loved his class
Professor Erickson is really energetic and pretty funny. There were only 3 assignments: Midterm, Paper, Final. The paper was actually really fun to write. Despite the massive class size, he still tries to engage with as many students as he can. His lectures are very clear, and he did curve the final and the papers too I believe.
Everyone loves Professor Erickson. He makes this class incredibly interesting and fun through his lectures. If you take this class you should join the honors section; it is a great opportunity to have him be your TA and you will gain a greater appreciation for archaeology and myth. I woke up each day excited to go to this class.
Erickson is such a great professor, I really enjoyed my time in his lectures and it was the one class I actually looked forward to attending during my winter quarter. There is quite a bit of reading but it isn't that difficult. You can also get away with not really doing the readings, however, if you want a high grade you must still put in effort.
Erickson is such a great lecturer and even made me consider minoring in classics for a while. The material is really fun, and I even was excited to write my final paper :'D. Readings can be a little long and unclear, so make sure you set aside time for it. Definitely one of my favorite classes I've taken at UCSB, and pretty easy too.
Erickson is an enthusiastic lecturer and is very engaging with the entire class. He guides the class through the translation in a clear and positive way, which is so nice because Latin can be very frustrating and difficult to figure out when you're stuck. He's such a funny professor and this was one of my favorite classes I've taken.
A god amongst men, no one compares to the GOAT Erickson in any regard, he's just such a guy. Very funny, you can tell he just wants to teach some Greek myths and have a good time.
He is an amazing teacher. He is very entertaining and very passionate. His class isn't too hard just make sure to really pay attention in class and you won't even need to spend your free time on this class. I would definitely recommend this class if you're looking to complete a GE.
This professor is the best professor I have ever had!!! Not only does he come to class everyday and involve the crowd, but he makes the lesson clear and understanding. The class is made up of 3 assignments which are super easy if you know what you're talking about! Overall, he is one of the most caring and hilarious professor I have taken. 11/10
I loved Erickson. If you go to lecture and just listen, you will get an A. Sections are mandatory which was kinda rough but always got out early anyways. My favorite class that I've taken here. Instead of doing the reading, I would always watch a Youtube vid and it worked the same. Highly recommend
Great lecturer, very funny. Just pay attention in class and you'll be fine for exams.
Idk i heard this was an easy A but lowkey its not. There is a midterm essay, a 6 page paper, and a 100 question final. Everyone says pay attention in lecture but its so hard cause he just talks and his powerpoints are just pictures. Idk i would have rather wrote an essay than have to memorize 100+ terms.
If you dont go to lecture and you dont like going to lectures in general dont take this class. If you try to look at the slides to catch up you wont really catch up. I did the absolute bare minimum and got a C.
There are lots of readings but he goes over them in lecture, which was a lot easier than reading them. Timed essay for the midterm, in-person multiple choice final, and final essay relating Greek Myth to a modern day movie. The lectures are entertaining and easy to understand.
prof erickson is super funny and entertaining in lecture, and his courseload is manageable and pretty easy. the papers are a bit long, but a little effort goes a long way with them. honestly didn't do a single reading and still did decent in the class. the in-class timed essays are easier than they sound.
if you want an easy GE, prof erickson's greek myth is a great option. you can get away with doing minimal work and still get a good grade. the papers are worth a lot, but if your ta is chill even that shouldn't be a major stressor. prof erickson's lectures on their own are super entertaining and make greek myth fun!
If you want an easy A, just go to class. Everything that you need to know in order to do well in this class is taught in lecture. Erickson is a super entertaining lecturer as well with a very pleasant and inviting charisma. If you don't go to class, you won't get an A. Despite that, going to class is well worth it. Only class I've genuinely enjoyed
A very chill professor. No issues
Erickson's CLAS40 is a gem - entertaining lectures and manageable work. Skip the readings and focus on class notes. Use unstuck ai and ChatGPT to breeze through the essays. With some effort, you can easily snag an A.
Professor Erickson is a great professor!! Lectures and content are super entertaining and you can tell he truly cares about what he is teaching! Just go to lecture and skim the readings and you will do fine! He is super respectful and understanding and makes his class easy for a reason so please respect him too!!
if you don't do the readings then go to lecture, he's cool
Um so at first he was very chill and I thought the lectures were amazing but then he just got really weird and apparently he is making the class even harder now. There is a midterm at 25%, paper at 30%, and a final at 25% which is multiple choice and 100 questions. Thankfully I have a very chill TA, Carissa you're the best, but Erickson just yaps.
Every person who gave him a bad review is just mad greek myth isn't as easy as it used to be. It is still mad easy if you put in a small amount of effort. He's very passionate about the material and lectures are fun and entertaining.
Class is graded only by project, section participation, and midterm/final exam. The midterm and paper are relatively straightforward and require some effort. The final exam is 100 MCQ questions, trivia-like with hyper-specific questions only mentioned once or twice at all. Brice is a nice guy, but his final is unreasonably difficult.
Class consists of 1 midterm (in class essay, and you sorta knew what was gonna be on it), 5 page essay, and a ridiculously hard cum final (100 MC) with super specific questions. This class is not easy like everyone says it is. lecture 3 times a week (not mand), section once a week (mand), and TONS of reading each week. You gotta buy a lot of books.
“I don't get how he's rated so highly. I took Greek Myth expecting a fun, mid-effort GE, but it was far from it. Lectures start off fine but spiral into his rambling. His slides have almost no info, making class feel mandatory—yet I learned more from readings. The final average was 63/100. Wouldn't recommend, even if you're not after an easy GE.
If you go to all or almost all the lectures/sections, skim the reading (you don't have to buy ANYTHING just go to the library or google an online version), and do a little bit of studying for the exams, you'll do amazing. The class is incredibly interesting and in depth, and most of the readings are covered in class anyway. Super fun!
Great professor interesting topics good at lectures. no homework very reading heavy but pretty chill. Class was a perfect GE until this year's final, worth 25% of your grade, with an average of 65/100. That is crazy difficulty for a GE. luckily it had an 18 point curve so it wasn't that bad. I took it Pass/No Pass, so it was pretty OK overall.
If you don't like Greek Myth maybe don't take this class or you'll be bored. Professor was good, made things funny and relatable, making things easy to understand. Talked a lot abt Freud but it was fine. Lots of readings but go to lecture cuz he explains them and you'll be fine skipping a reading or two. Grade mostly depends on TA since they grade.
I really enjoyed this class! It was a good way to get gen ed credit, and it was super insteresting and engaging. Taking good notes is key, and there is honestly something from every lecture on the final, so if u skip make sure someone gets you notes. I had a lot of fun in class 40 :)
He is an excellent lecturer, fun + engaging; I found myself genuinely excited to attend. Grading is heavily dependent on your TA!!! Grace Miller is a gem, I'd recommend her. Lectures are ESSENTIAL, but readings don't matter. Take very thorough notes— the final was basically trivia, tested on tiiiny details mentioned once or twice in lectures.
Erickson enjoys teaching this class and you can tell that he does. Your TA however really makes or breaks you in this class. I had Dai and he was one of the chillest TAs ever. Graded very easily. Some easier professors teach this class, however, Erickson's class was still manageable. His final was extremely niche and failed to state he would curve.
Midterm was an in-class essay, final was 100 question multiple choice. I never did any of the readings and relied on my 6th-grade Percy Jackson knowledge and got an A on the final. Prof Erickson is super passionate about his subject and a funny/engaging lecturer. I'd recommend going to lecture bc slides are impossible to understand otherwise.
Class is boring, final mc is so specific, very little things in the grade book. If you have previous knowledge the class is easy, but otherwise there is so much reading and so much memorization. Easy to pass the class but if you want a good grade you have to work for it. Not a fun GE, there are easier. But, you can not show up and get a C easily.
He's very passionate and easy to listen to. As long as you do your reading and go to lecture it's pretty easy. The slides can be difficult to understand if you miss class.
GO TO LECTURE! It's important but also the prof is super charismatic. Attendance isn't required but you'll fall behind if you miss. Also super important to do the reading. Overall, easy & fun GE. Highly recommend!
Fun guy, I think he is the best guy to teach this class but GO TO LECTURE. He drops small things on the final. The essays were very reasonably graded and transparent on how to improve but the final was EVIL. I studied everything on the guide and still got a 75% without the curve. It was quite the curve, I got a 94 but the final is no joke (trivia)
spent 10 weeks in class just to take a final that had absolutely nothing he covered in class. the only reason I got an A was because I learned more from Percy Jackson in elementary school than this class. he would crash out if people talked. final was so bad he had to curve it by 35 points. TA Dai was lowk the goat and such an easy grader.
easy class all memorization & easy grading. did not do readings still got an a on midterm, all you have to do it sit and listen to lectures easy GE
He's super passionate and has a good personality. Barely any homework, lots of assigned readings, but I didn't read any and was fine. Only a midterm and final, which was memorizing certain locations and artifacts, so it's not that hard. The only con is that he doesn't post grades. I just finished the final, and not a single grade has been inputted.
Erickson was awesome! Super passionate about this material as it is what his research is. It's important to come to lecture because his slides that are posted contain very little text. A few in class attendance/homework assignments, 1 midterm, and a written final. Overall pretty interesting and pretty easy!
Amazing professor and great class. I definitely recommend going to the lectures as the midterm and final are based on his slides, which he posts but lack detailed information. You can tell he loves his research and was always willing to answer questions after lecture. Midterm and final were the same format (what, when, where, and why) and very easy
