Best class I have taken! Bridget is one of those profs that makes it fun to go to class. She is hilarious and cares about her students. Super easy tester just read the materials (including the textbook)! I had her for intersession and I wish I would have waited to have her for a full year!
Bridget is funny, down to earth, and willing to help you out with anything (course-related or otherwise). Any class she teaches is an easy A, although her exams are really nit-picky. Her lectures are more just her talking about her own experience in social work, which makes them entertaining and helpful. I highly recommend her.
She is the best. Super hilarious
Bridget cares about her students, is easy to talk and makes a 3hr lecture enjoyable and easy to attend. She uses humour and stories to make the material easier to remember and learn. We got to "raise" a virtual kid & it was a great assignment that was fun and made the course more interesting. She is firmI & fair, would take any course she teaches!
Absolutely amazing teacher. She used most of the class time to tell stories about her own experience in social work. 3 hour lectures fly by. She is a very fair prof and let us use a cheat sheet on the final exam, but make sure to read the textbook
Really great person to listen to, but extremely hard marker. You must listen to every word she says in lecture and read every word of the textbook in order to do well on her exams, and even then they are hard. Would not recommend this class if you do not have to take it. Seriously, more hassle than it is worth.
Overall a good course because Bridget makes it interesting. She cares about her students and is willing to help you if need it. She's a fair marker but you need to earn your grade. Expect to read the assigned readings. For the paper, she expects APA format and has high standards. Feel better prepared for upper year courses thanks to her!
This course is interesting because you reflect on past relationships and it talks about stuff like good communication skills that will help in the future. Lectures aren't necessary to attend unless there's an in class activity but going to class will give you a good idea of what might be on the exam. Read the textbook properly if you want a high A.
Would not recommend this professor. She is very unapproachable and is not pleasant to talk to one on one. If you ask her for help, she answers in a disrespectful and condescending way. Her exams are unfair and are more difficult than you would think given the nature of the class.
I love going to Bridget's classes! She tells the greatest stories that all help you stay engaged in the class while understanding the lecture material. She really cares about her students and wants them to be mentally well and safe even outside of the academic realm. Great prof and great class!
She is an awesome prof
Did not enjoy the semester with her. Found her incredibly rude and disrespectful and did not care about students' well-being. Even if you initially respect her, she is nasty in return. Would not recommend her as a professor.
Had her 3 times, twice for this class cause I failed the first time. I was mad at her when I failed and blamed her. I asked for extra help and she met with me 3x and answered many emails. This time I read the book, like she told me to, not just her slides and I got an A! She wants the best for her students at the university level for success.
Intersting course but lots of homework to raise a virtual child each week. Fun assignments and tests are straight forward. Prof is caring and expects the best from students. Does not like if on social media or phone and asked students to stop using phones during presentations which I liked but also though was rude of her to make that request
Straight forward first year course. Follows textbook so easy to keep up and do well. Written paper was good for me to boost my mark. Made 3 hour class enjoyable. Helped me many times, especially with my paper but didn't just give me the answer, wanted me to understand and I am a better student now thanks to her time and care. Would take again
applies course content to real life situations - very welcoming in lectures! pretty much tells you exactly what will be on exam.
Bridget is funny and has really cool stories to explain content. If you show up to lectures and read the assigned readings and you'll be fine. The exams are easy but she marks a bit harder on the paper. Realistically you would only struggle in this course if you didn't put in any effort.
Super fun and interesting class. I really enjoyed it! The only thing I didn't like was how slow the classes would go. Instead of a 10 min break every hour I would rather we end 20 mins early (night class) and just have 1 break. This is a great elective to take if you don't mind the walk up the Brescia hill! And you study a lot for the final!
Content in this course is very interesting, however, she is very nasty and has little respect for students. Even when reaching our for clarification and help you will be made to feel like a burden. Would never recommend.
Caring professor but also requires students to do their work and not rely on "the teacher" which is one aspect of University that I really appreciate. Large classes so while I don't agree with rater who said makes feel like a burden, she does tell us many of us and 1 of her so to ask in class rather than by email. Reasonable request given size.
Not approachable what so ever. Puts on this very approachable, reasonable, fair, persona but is the furthest thing from it. She'll call you out in class for not paying attention meanwhile she'll talk about nothing for the first two hours of lecture and then lecture for the last 30-45 minutes. Won't be taking another course at Brescia.
Fav prof! Compelled to write this review because of prior comment - this prof is kind and caring and has high expectations for ALL her students - so staff off your phone in lecture or leave the room to use. As a mature student returning to school, I appreciate that as I find others use of social media distracting. Excellent use of lecture time too.
Love this professor, this is my 3rd course with her. She's caring and funny. Always gives us our breaks and starts/ends on time. Got to raise a virtual child and it was a lot of fun and better than traditional course work for learning! Take this course!
Get ready to feel belittled and treated like a child. Youll need to make a name tag for this professor. You will be called out if you ask questions but if you do not you will have no idea what youre doing and she will not accept questions that arent asked in front of everyone for the benefit of the class. funny but a sarcastic and rude prof
I'm in this class and different total different perspective to prior post. I appreciate the ask for use of name tags, I want my teacher to know my name! Why I went to a small school. As a mature student, I understanding emailing prof outside of class is a privilege not expectation so I understand her wanting questions asked in class. No complaints!
One of my fav profs at Brescia! She makes this content relatable and lectures go by fast. Raising a virtual teen and it is easy to relate and earn a good mark at same time. Much better than traditional testing.
Professor DeMarchi is an amazing professor who is willing to listen to you and provide great feedback. Professor DeMarchi is a fair marker and her test are directly from the textbook and lecture slides. If you put in the work, you will get a good mark. DeMarchi makes the class exciting and engaging and you can apply what you learn to real life.
she does not respect the students. she talks with them as children and does not respect their questions. she spends three hours talking where the lecture does not need more than one hour. she did not give a clear explanation when you ask her about your mark. The worst class ever. Not recommended.
Fun class! Got to raise a virtual kid! 2 written assignments on virtual kid were spaced out over course so not to heavy. Uses a rubric so you know how you will be graded. Midterm and final exam were straight forward. Cares about her students and I would recommend.
Lots of reading in this course but prof makes lecture time fly by and is easy to listen to. Weekly quizzes and m/c tests so very straight forward. No problem earning a good mark. Would take any course with her!
Makes a 3 hour class go by fast. Always gave us our breaks. Straight forward m/c tests. Weekly quizzes were open book and a good way to practice before the midterm. Would take a course with her again. Easy to get an A if you read the text and attend class.
She treats the class like children. She tries to come across as being approachable, easygoing and having a good sense of humour, but is not. She calls students out during class which can be embarrassing and unnecessary. The class felt dragged out and longer than necessary. It was great that she would tell stories to help teach, but class felt long.
I know my classmates want class done ASAP and don't appreciate the pace of this teacher but she's a good teacher. No phones to be used in class and she makes that rule known at first class. If you are "called out" for it you knew the rule and she asks you to take your phone to the hall to use it. She wants students to be accountable.
extremely condescending
Amazing teacher. Passionate about subject matter and explains things well.
She took over this course a few weeks into it and no complaints!! Makes course content easy to understand and class time goes by fast, easy to listen to and good class conversations.
I really appreciated her direct approach and as a mature student her classroom expectations and management. She knows the material and is easy to talk to. She took time to meet with me and help me with learning strategies. Helped to ease my transition back into studying after a long time away from education. Real gem!
The most interesting course I've taken so far! Everyone should take this course if you plan on working with children or having children. Her passion for the subject matter inspired me to do a 'deep dive' into more of the theories. Makes class time go by fast. Fair exams - if you keep up with the readings, you will do well in the course.
She made program evaluation 'come to life' and made a boring subject matter seem interesting and relevant. Showed us all the ways future employers may require this skill in various work settings. Course pack was better than main text. I've had her for several course. Funny, caring and high expectations for her students to prepare us for future.
My most favourite class. Subject matter is interesting, challenging and made me think differently. Prof is caring and wants everyone to do well but doesnt give away marks for nothing so read the book and go to class and straight forward. Would definitely take a course with her again.
Great prof, if you are bad at multiple choice dont take her class, you are only marked on 3 multiple choice tests. She is intimidating at first but she is super nice!
I took this as an elective and so glad I did! I learned a lot of things that I will use in my career and everyday life. Made concepts of brain development easy to understand. Some of my peers unhappy with mark but when she docks marks, it's clear as to why. She wants the best out of her students academically and professionally. Good prep for life
Amazing professor. All around engaging lectures.
Bridget is a good person and a great professor. All of her lectures are interesting and often end early. She cares about making all instructions and concepts as clear as possible. She answers emails quickly and efficiently. Her assignments are detailed enough to know what she wants but open ended enough to be creative.
Pro: course content fascinating. Con's: be prepared to study hard but don't expect to receive a high mark, difficult to meet with this professor to review marked material, exams questions often do not reflect course reading's or lecture content.
She is a great prof. I didn't find her exams to be very difficult. I didn't study a whole lot and got over 80. The readings she assigns are beneficial and interesting. She is super funny, knowledgable, has great stories, and is over an awesome prof. I would take her other classes just because of her if I had room for them in my schedule!
Do not take this course if you arent good at memorization or fill in the blanks! Online, this course is absolutely awful. Fill in the blanks are extremely hard, and exams are impossible to do well in given so much content needed to memorize and such a short time.
This class was taken online because of the recent pandemic and it is awful. The first exam was complete nonsense. She expected people not to cheat online and I highly suspect that grades were unfairly deducted even if you didnt cheat. Shes overly paranoid and should rearrange her exams so there isnt any cheatable questions if shes so concerned.
My first online class and given all the newness of online learning, I learned a lot and found lecture material to be helpful. Exams were different each time for format and as someone who doesn't like m/c, I appreciated an opportunity to show my knowledge in other ways. I don't agree with those 'awful' reviews. Not my experience at all.
Simply awesome
Don't take. no clear outline for class and lectures are pointless. Not sure how she is a proff. Spends most the class complaining about personal stuff. Marks hard and gives everyone the same mark. Also does not clarify outlines for exams.
Awesome course especially for being online. Exams were fair and I appreciated the non-cumulative aspect!! Interesting lectures to listen to
If you want to learn a lot, take this class. You must follow requirements and ask questions if you arent sure for the assignments. I did and got 90% on my essay! Exam was open book and I good to show learning rather than memory. If you want to slap a paper together, expect a lower grade. She has high but fair standards for her class.
Third course I've taken with her and highly recommend. She expects excellence from her students and prepares you well for next level of course work. I'm a better student for it. She's fair in grading. She's easy to talk to and is willing to help those who want to excel and help themself.
This is my third time taking a class with Bridget. I've been trying to give her several chances to prove herself as a decent prof and even further- a decent person. Yet, she fails me each time. This will absolutely be the last time taking a class with her as she doesn't even understand the basic meanings of respect and kindness. STAY AWAY.
Exams are tough
As a mature student, I appreciate her approach to teaching adult learners. I think some of my classmates straight out of high school expected more "hand holding" but that is not University. She expected us to be responsible to govern ourselves for completing the assigned readings. Interesting to watch the generational differences in the room.
I have taken multiple of Dr Demarchis class, and while the content has always been interesting, she has missed the mark as a professor time and time again. When I sought accommodation, she was short and rude. She often grades differently than her rubric, and is not timely with grading. Content wise, interesting. Personally, would not recommend
The course is textbook heavy and sometimes the readings can get too much. Bridget responded fast to any emails and answers questions well. All exams, including the final, were multiple choice and non-cumulative which was really nice. Overall , if you keep up with readings you should do fine in the course.
Overall, I think its time for Brescia to get some new family studies profs. Very tough grader beware. Exam questions are very detailed. Heavy on projects. Overall, its a family studies course why is it being taught/ tested 20X harder?
I completely disagree with the other reviewers for this same course, same term ... I find her to be kind, caring, respectful and fair. I've had her before and she is clear and brings the content to life! Her expectations are the typical for University level work. She answers emails and questions quickly and is helpful if you want added help.
Interesting course.
One of the worst profs ever. Bridget not only constantly goes on random tangent during class that have no correlation to the class material but she also constantly leaves little to no guidance on not only assignments but exams as well she also takes weeks to respond to emails and is extremely rude when asking questions during lectures STAY AWAY
Bridget likes to go on tangents and though she can talk for hours her stories help you remember the concepts she teaches. she is a bit of a hard marker but she's a great person and a really funny prof
Very tough grader
Her first exam is very difficult. She has told multiple classes each year that the grades of this first exam are, "the lowest exam average in the history of teaching this course". It is nearly impossible to meet on zoom with her. If you need to take this course with her do text readings and study terms.
Just terrible. Will not be taking any more of her courses. Evaluations are difficult for a first year credit. High expectations.
boring course,
I had 4 courses total with Bridget. At first, I was a little put off by her teaching style but in the end I appreciated her approach and the knowledge I took away from her courses. She was a pretty tough grader with high expectations, but if you pay attention, you know what she wants from students. She was helpful to me post-grad too!
Easy 2 assignments, difficult midterm and exam. The final exam wasn't proctored, 240 questions (MC, F/T & fill in the blank) within 3 hours. I tried to voice my concern about the timing of the final exam, but she dismissed it by stating that it's the university's policy to set minimum 30 seconds per question.
Relatively a difficult course to excel in. With much effort a low 70 is what it will get you! Although it does have interesting material.
Lots of reading but interesting material and Prof makes lectures interesting. She has expectations of students that are very reasonable for University and yet some of my classmates - direct out of high school - were upset by this. If you want to be spoon fed and taught material directly to the test, this won't be the class for you.
Interesting course material but asynchronous course delivery isn't the best since topics would be better discussed in class, as a group given the nature of the topics covered. I've had Prof Demarchi before and she really does care for her students. Not an easy A but an A or A+ is definitely possible.
Multiple choice tests with questions straight forward and not tricky. Interesting assignments that were enjoyable to do and I learned a lot. Some of my classmates didn't like her but I thought she was excellent. Her stories help to bring the content to life and what some say are off track, they do relate. I found helpful.
Can't wait to take more courses with her! Knowledgeable, kind, caring and accessible outside of class. Great course, great Prof.
Tests were specific to the readings so pay attention to those details and easy enough to do well on exams. Not cumulative tests which is nice. Assignments are not too hard or too much time which is nice. She's passionate about the material and it shows. Only Prof I've had who has taken time to help me outside of class time.
difficult exams
Probably the most difficult prof I have experienced with high standards
She's really nice, and her stories make the material easier to remember.
Exams are long and focus on small details from textbook with questions that seem to have multiple right answers. Does not give feedback on assignments. Goes on a lot of tangents during lectures making them long and sometimes boring. Textbook is definitely required. With lots of effort expect a 70.
If you want bad marks take her courses.
I found adjusting to first year university hard. Grades in all my classes were lower than I got in high school. For this course, I appreciated that Prof stuck to the textbook and added real life aspects to make it easier to understand. She really cared about her students and had high but reasonable expectations.
If you read the book and listen the lecture, you will be fine. Exam questions - many of them BUT easy to understand and not tricky. Prof met with me many times during the term and was super helpful and caring.
Has a cute cat. Seems strict but sweet? Does not provide feedback on exams. Cut 15+ points on my audio assignment because "I spoke too fast." MCQ exams are confusing and detail-focused. Finishes a 60+ page lesson in 15-20 short slides. Good but LONG stories. Don't take an online class with her - online exams SUCK- 135 MCQ'S AND YOU CANT GO BACK
I've had her for many classes and she's really grown on me. She kinda rambles in lectures but she's got a soft spot for her students so that makes up for it. She's got a warm heart and she's clearly passionate about what she teaches. Her exams are LONG but fairly simple. You definitely need to study but she throws in a few giveaways here and there
Multiple choice. Liberal examples from personal life when lecturing. MUCH UNRELATED INFORMATION!! Gets old. You don't know if that information will be included on the tests or not. Sticks closely to textbooks. Be sure you buy and read them! Do not recommend. Not a real professor, only MSW.
When I went to her asking for advice on how I could study properly to improve my work she was more than happy to help! Her teaching was a wake-up call for how I should approach studying for university, and the methods I used hae have carried me through to an A honours undergrad degree. Heading to graduate school now and feel very prepared, thanks!
She is very good at keeping her class focused but is strict about testing.
way too much reading and terrible grader. would not take this class again.
she is so funny
She talks about her Life in Class, which deviates from the lecture. Her Exams are M/C nonsense with typos and very confusing wording at times; for my class, there were no Short Answers or assignments outside of a final one regarding notes, which I find hampered my marks. But, this may not be the case for yours.
Relies solely on slides & rambles on stories of her life. Makes comments that can appear ignorant & unrelated to course content. In exams, says she does not accept questions being asked. There were several typos & repeated questions throughout which caused major confusion. Would not take this class or any other class with her again.
Exams were a mess, relied heavily on slides and rambled on in class with stories about her life. Sometimes the stories did no even relate to content. Would not take a class with her again.
stay away
She makes lectures enjoyable. Includes textbook things on exam, so read the textbook.
half the time she will ramble on about things that don't have anything to do with what you will be tested on. She uses difficult/mature wording, has many spelling errors on the exam, and is barely any straight forward questions on exam. This was unfortunate as the only grades you got were from your three exams.
Great teacher! Really passionate about what she's teaching
Prof is a nice person and fair grader on essays. My only issue was that the exam questions were too general with multiple right answers and lots of repeated questions on exam, over a 100+ questions & the exams were weighted too heavy which brought down my grade significantly. I just wish the exam was more clear and organized.
Best class I took this year. Prof is clear in her instructions about expectations and test questions are from the book so if you read the book, easy enough to do well. Class lecture style includes stories that connect to the content and while some of my friends don't like it, I loved it. Made lectures enjoyable, helped me to remember content.
Just great! Interesting content and lectures were enjoyable and didn't make me want to skip class!
AMAZING professor, she is intelligent in so many areas, she is personable and transparent. I love her
favourite prof by far
If you have the opportunity to take a class taught by Prof. DeMarchi ... do it! Very knowledgeable, kind, caring and smart! Really cares about her students.
Prof makes the lecture time go by quickly as she kept us engaged in the content and how it also shows up in our everyday life. Such a good and practical course for self and professional degree as a future teacher.
Don't love m/c exams but it's a great course with a great teacher! Would take another course taught be her.
Took this course as a requirement and ended up loving the lectures due to this prof. A night class I didn't mind showing up for!! Loved the group project assignment as different and interesting.
Lots of readings as course covers a lot of very interesting topics, Project was fun to do. Exams were long in length but there were a lot of readings so I guess it makes sense. Would take again.
Didn't like the content of the course but I got through because this Prof made us all feel welcome and safe to share our thoughts on difficult topic matters.
She was nice and funny but half our lectures were taken up by stories that ended up not even relating to the content by the end of them. She is knowledgeable the stories took away time learning content. Instructions on our video assignment & case study were very minimal and unclear. Grading was okay but still no final grade and it's January now..
Prof DeMarchi can be hit or miss, but the class is still fairly engaging. Use resources like the textbook, Unstuck ai, and study sessions to get the most out of it. Exams can be disorganized, but the course still has its merits.
She would often go on lengthy anecdotes about her life and not adhere to course material. Attendance was mandatory, but because she was so unfocused it often felt like a waste of time. She can be very rude, often without seeming to realize it. Assignment grading was inconsistent with her own advice at times. All in all, a horrible experience.
While a nice and bubbly person, she simply is not a good professor. During lectures (required), she spends her time rambling about personal anecdotes that do not relate to the course content. She reads off of a few slides (typically 5-6 for a 1.5 hour lecture) near the end of class to meet her requirements. Yet, her exams focus on the textbook...
My favourite class because of this teacher. I took as an elective and ending up loving it. Brings real world professional practice into the required readings so lectures don't feel boring. The course structure requires a lot of time on the practical application of interviewing skills so be prepared to do your readings and come prepared.
I found an online asynchronous course a challenge as I struggled to keep up with the weekly work without an official class time. Not the teacher's fault just something for others to consider. I appreciated the practical applications given to the content. I want to be a social worker one day and I found Bridget to be very knowledgable and helpful.
I was so anxious to take this course because of the video assignment. Bridget encouraged me and helped me to believe in myself that I could get through it. Lectures were fun and time flew. I didn't do super great on the video but well enough and I'm proud of myself. Because of her help, I didn't drop the course!!
This course is a requirement for the professional program and the school of social work requires attendance for it. That's annoying for someone only taking it as an elective. But despite that, I really liked the course and the teacher. She is kind and was always willing to help me or my classmates. Would take another course with her for sure.
Expectations are clear and assignments are fair. I like that my grade wasn't only based on tests as I'm better at assignments than tests. Didn't love proctortrack but that isn't the teacher's fault. Would take a course with Bridget again, but would take one that is in-person. I didn't like the online as much as I thought I would.
All Bridget does is go on and on during lectures, mostly about her personal life that no one cares about. It was a mandatory three hour lecture, and she only spent about 30 minutes on the actual content. The rest was her rambling about her job. Honestly the worst prof I've ever had would not recommend her for any classes.
My favourite class! Her teaching style connecting real world practice skills to the textbook is very helpful for my learning style. It was because of that teaching style that I did better on the assessments and exams. Some classmates don't like that but I appreciate learning beyond the textbook. Would take a course with her again.
I've had her before so I knew what to expect and it did not disappoint. She offered help with the experiential learning expectations and made lecture content not boring. I genuinely looked forward to her class each week. She cares about the students and has high expectations for our success.
Loved this class and we had a blast during the communication labs. Would def take a course with this teacher again. Attendance is mandatory so if choosing as an elective, keep that in mind!
Loved the class, liked the Prof. Labs were scary at first but turned out to be a lot of fun and great learning! Now considering this as a career/major.
Be prepared to hear a podcast about her whole life. Most pointless lectures ever, all she does is talk about her life and random things that have nothing to do with the actual course.
