best prof i've had in a while. she really wants us to succeed and gives us tons of resources to help us - makes worksheets for recitations, study guides, help sessions. also does demonstrations in class so you can see what you're learning about. i really like her class.
Best teacher I've had in a long time. She's super nice, caring, and really wants you to succeed. If you go to class, read the book, and do the homework you should be golden!!!
Dr. DePrince is a great professor. She is always looking to help you succeed in anyway she can. This is chemistry, so expect to study and put time in to practice, but if you don't do well it is on you--she give you absolutely everything you need to succeed in this course. I HIGHLY recommend!
She is simply the best option for taking an intro chemistry class. Such a sweet individual and really cares about her students. If you just pay attention in class, do the homework, and pay attention when she focuses specific topics you will easily do well. Also her office hours is like a personal tutor! She's great!
She's the best. She will help anyone out and during the semester she continued to push back the homework due dates because there was minor issues with the program. She curves tests if needed and the exam review sheets and quiz's given are exactly whats on the exams. I would recommend her to anyone!
She is perfect! She is very laid back and very helpful. The test reviews before the tests are extremely helpful so I would suggest going. Tests are fairly easy if you attend the reviews. I would recommend her for chem!!
She goes very fast in class and handwrites all of her notes but she turned out to be a pretty good professor. She is SO helpful though so that makes up for her disorganized teaching in class. If you study the methods from class and read the book you will be fine. She is so sweet and nice and really wants to help her students. Definitely recommend!
Dr. DePrince was one of the nicest profs I've had, she's super helpful and very approachable. However, her teaching style is very unorganized and made studying the notes difficult b/c she would write whatever came to her head instead of having notes already written up. She's a good prof, just not the best for the way I learn.
She is such a wonderful professor, I'm not good at chemistry at all and I passed this class. She is so helpful and kind and she wants to see all of her students pass. TAKE HER!! Make sure to go to her office hours as well.
LOVED HER! She was always so willing to help. Her test reviews are great! If you know the test reviews then an A is totally possible. Totally should take her. AMAZING teacher.
I took ap chem in high school and passed with a 3. I didn't learn anything new in this course so the topic was pretty easy for me. She is a wonderful teacher and is very lenient on grades. I could see how some information could have been confusing to a student who only took honors chemistry in high school. go to her office hours if you need help.
Absolutely recommend. I would like to get into graduate school for chemistry and she is my idol!!! Likes to get the class engaged, and very approachable instructor that is super smart.
This class is definitely difficult but Dr. Dprince really helped me out. I had a hard time following her lectures in class because she wrote the notes while teaching instead of having a powerpoint. I went to her office hours every week and that is the only way I passed the class because she explained all of the problems for me. Tests are difficult
Bridget is hands down one of the best professors I've ever had. She talks a little quickly but explains concepts so well and will go back if you need her to, and she's really helpful at office hours. She gives lots of practice problems that are exactly like her tests. I'm taking chem 2 at another school and wish I had her, she's awesome
She's honestly one of the best professors I've ever had and really devotes so much time to answering students' questions. She is what all professors should be. Very clear in lectures, helpful, schedules reviews before the tests. She focuses on you understanding the material rather than giving you formulas and making you memorize them.
I took her for honors chem 1 and regular chem 2. During chem 1 I had a tragedy occur and ended up having to skip about a month of class but she was supportive and gave me attendance points for that time. I ended up getting a C because of missed material but in chem 2 it is a breeze. She is very sweet, tests are clear, homework is frequent but easy
She does a great job explaining material, and her lectures aren't boring. She tends to make jokes sometimes, and uses in-class experiment demonstrations to show how topics work. It is really easy to take notes from her lectures, which are helpful for studying. Plus, she puts up a lot of review material to help students.
best prof for 1046, but her tests are hard. she doesn't give partial credit. tests are broken down half math, half concepts. 7 quizzes, 1 dropped. 3 tests, 1 dropped. i don't like how she teaches bc she doesn't show exactly how to do the math problems, just plugs in numbers that we dont know where they came from. iClicker for attendance, connect hw
Basically what everyone else said; however, this is my first time ever struggling in chem (pre-pharm) because the information is new (more in depth than 1045 and high school). Be prepared to prepare... advice: read, practice problems, do connect not only w yahoo answers, use office hours, go to good a TA, and don't fall behind. Wish I would have!
Great teacher! Super nice and approachable, very helpful during office hours. She wants to help you with whatever she can. Tough grader sometimes but you really learn.
Amazing Teacher! I hope I have her for Analytical Chemistry also.
Dr. DePrince was a great professor. Always willing to help you out and even though it was a very large lecture class always made you feel like she cared about your indiviual grade. She wants you to learn and understand and is slesy excited about teaching chemistry. Would absolutely recommend her.
It was clear that she cared about teaching students the material while not boring us to death. The tests could be tricky, but they were fair and she gave us ample examples and practice problems to work out on our own. Even though attendance is not mandatory, still go because she explains the material much better than her notes do. Would take again.
Dr. DePrince was and is an exceptional teacher. Even with a large class of about 200 students, she made the effort to personally help every student that approached her. Due to her large class size, her office hours were often full, but they were definitely worth attending. A bit of a tough grader but she uses several examples to explain concepts.
study her notes.
Was an excellent chemistry professor. Does good examples and makes jokes. Very approachable to ask questions of .Evaluates at end by adjusting grades according to how hard the tests are, which can be tough. Devote yourself to this class and you won't be let down.
As a student that's currently taking orgo, I'm really happy I took Deprince for Gen Chem II. I took this as an honors course so I can't attest to how good she is in a large lecture hall, but I thought she always did a great job with lectures (examples, helping us with a homework problem or two). The tests are challenging but not insane.
One of the best Chemistry professors at FSU. Great lectures, and great TAs. She explains material well, and keeps things interesting. She does cool experiments and gives followable notes, so it is easy to study later. Go to lecture, and actually do the homework (dont cheat) and you will understand the material.
Great teacher! Difficult class but she is very helpful and will curve if the whole class does poorly on an exam. She's very approachable, would definitely take her again.
When I took her for Spring 2015, my experience wasnt easy. Like, I had to study alot of practice problems to understand it and her office hours were not that helpful because everybody else had a question and I could never ask my questions. Does curve at the end to help you out, which is wonderful, and there was a cheat sheet with formulas.
She is very clear and articulate during lectures and gives out practice questions for the exams, but in my opinion they absolutely do not help and I have no idea where she even got the exam questions from. Book is almost optional (I would recommend having it). I like her but her exams are not fair
She is overall a really great professor. She really seems to genuinely care how her students success in the class. She gives ample amount of review material for each test; including old exams, sample questions, and a study guide. One thing I hated was the online ALEKS program she uses for class. Way too much work for something I didn't learn from
one of the best professors i've ever had. she gets our struggle and will make effort to personally get to know and help you if you go to her. honestly ive never gone to her office hours and she was still really nice to me. also she does help out your final grade in the end and makes it passable. her tests are tough so study
While she does offer a lot of help don't be surprised when you are blind sighted on her tests. She does drop the lowest test and quiz and curves but DO NOT DEPEND ON THAT. Also she has a homework program called ALEKS which is the absolute worst but the more you complete the more it'll help your grade. She's a good prof. but you need to study.
She honestly made the material so easy to understand. Lectures and quizzes were conceptual which helped a ton, just wish she would do more practice problems. Her tests were hard, but she did drop a test and quiz in the end. ALEKS (online homework) is your worst nightmare. Just do it on time and expect to spend hours doing it, it helps in the end.
The test's are a little tricky but she gives so much extra credit, it's not too bad. Bridget has to be the nicest lady ever. I don't think I've ever had a teacher who cares about her students as much.
Study her notes and do recitation worksheets and practice problems and you will do fine for the test. Homework is really time consuming but if you do it, it will help in the end. i highly recommend taking her as she cares alot about her students and helps with curve at the end.
Everyone on here gives her way too much credit. Yes, I loved her as a person and she cares about her students but she is SO hard. gives you study material but none of it is useful for the test. Everyone I knew was struggling for a C. Go to all of her office hours and TAs office hours, thats the only way you will survive. Do the homework
Dr. DePrince is AMAZING!!!! Her office hours were great, her homework was useful, and her tests were challenging but manageable. She recognized very quickly my interest and love for chemistry and supplemented my education by challenging me further than the gen chem 2 curriculum! I loved her so much and hope to take another course with her.
Deprince is probably one of the nicest professors at FSU. That being said, the class is definitely not easy. She focuses on understanding the concepts behind the material rather than just being able to regurgitate it on an exam. I really felt that she cared how her students were doing and how we felt about the class though, which is not very common
Dr. DePrince is a wonderful professor. She genuinely cares for her students and she wants to see everyone succeed. That being said, her tests are tough...I can't even tell you how many hours I have spent working out problems in preparation for her tests. If you need a good chemistry professor (most aren't great) definitely take DePrince!
She is honestly the most fair science teacher I have had while at FSU. Gives a nice curve after every exam, but they are hard. Don't expect to barely study and just pass. However, she is very understanding and helpful in her office hours. I strongly suggest taking her.
Great teacher! Cares about her students, sets clear expectations, and lectures well.
Best chemistry teacher I've ever had.
DePrince is tough, I'm not going to lie, but she is so much better than any of the other teachers. She's explicit in her lectures, her office hours are super helpful, and she curves tests by at least ten points. If you can take her for both 1045 and 1046 as she teaches both.
Honestly the best chem professor at FSU. She uses concepts to really drive home why the math happens, so it's much easier to understand. Her tests are half conceptual too, and she's great about giving partial credit. The homework is a lot but i recommend getting a notebook and writing down exactly how you did each problem. Not an easy A but doable.
Deprince was one of the best teachers I've ever had. She truly cares about her students and what she teaches. She understands exactly what she is talking about, curves the tests, gives extra credit, and is just all around great. I'm not going to lie, the ALEKS homework is a lot just make sure to keep up with it and it'll be a great help.
Deprince is one of the best teachers you can ever have. She really knows her stuff and knows HOW to teach. Especially compared to all the other chemistry professors here. The textbook helps, and ALEKS as well. You're never blindfolded by tests or quizzes. She prepares you and gives you the proper resources. 10 out of 10 for Deprince.
Best chemistry professor at FSU. She is so nice and so knowledgable and really wants her students to do well. Her lectures are easy to follow and not as boring as would be expected. Curves test grades and is reasonable about grading. The ALEKS homework was the worst thing ever but other than that Dr. Deprince is a great professor. Highly recommend.
had her for chem 1. TAKE HER!!! so sweet, went to her office hours all the time and she made the material so easy to understand. drops your lowest test score which counts for 55% of your grade if your other test scores are substantially good. drops lowest 2 quiz grades. curves the class. ended with an A+ and signed up for her 8am chem 2 for spring.
Her tests are extremely difficult and hard to prepare for. She uploads old exams and a study guide, but tests are often completely different. She offers very little extra credit. She requires that you do aleks and it is the biggest waste of time. Most of the things you do on aleks are tedious and not used. Start aleks early, it will suck but do it.
Dr. DePrince was honestly the best professor I have had so far at FSU. Her class is extremely difficult, and you have to work really hard to get the grade you want. However, her lectures are amazing and she provides so many useful study tools (old exams, study guide, etc.). Iclicker, hw, and quiz grades help with your grade. She also curves.
Definitely the best chem professor at FSU. She knows what shes talking about and wants her students to succeed. The Aleks homework is awful and her tests are extremely tough, but she curved a lot which definitely helped my grade.
She taught very well and made chemistry easier for me. I did horrible on my first test but my grades continually got better as I learned how to prepare for her class better.
Dr. DePrince is a pretty good Gen Chem 2 teacher. She grades tests in a way that is helpful to students who are just a bit above average. Clicker questions are extra credit. Online homework is a pain but is worth 12 points overall for completion. Good teacher but VERY conceptual so if you find that difficult, I would not recommend.
Dr. DePrince is amazing. She cares so much about the success of her students and makes herself available to those who need help as much as she can. She explains the topics in a way that makes them so much easier to understand and her tests are very fair and match up well with a lot of the worksheets that she gives for extra practice. She's awesome!
Dr. DePrince is my favorite professor at FSU! She is sweet, caring, respectful and truly seeks to further her students education and help them understand the material. She does awesome experiments that stick with you and help you understand certain reactions. Her lectures were very informative and she's a very smart and amazing teacher.
She's an incredible teacher that really helps simplify chemistry. If you take her for chem 1 then take her for chem 2 also because she simplifies it too much and you will be lost with another professor. She heavily curves the tests and is a nice grader. No recitation quizzes.
Dr. DePrince is by far the best professor I have ever had the pleasure of having. I took Chem I and II with her and she has honestly made it the best experience for someone like me who really wants to learn the material, but also teaches in a way that even non-science majors can easily understand. NOTE: she does not use ALEKS anymore, don't worry.
I had her for CHM1045 and 1046, she is an incredible teacher (definitely best for chem) but it's still a hard class. If you take her for 1045 you have to take her for 1046 because she doesn't prepare you for other professor's chem classes as well.
DePrince is soooo great!!! Take her, I mean it. She cares about the students and really makes you understand the material. I am better at chemistry because I took her for both 1045 and 1046. You won't regret taking her.
Dr. DePrince (Bridget) is a great professor. This was her first time teaching P Chem 2 and it seemed like she had been doing it for years. Quantum mechanics is extremely hard to grasp for most people, and she is extremely understanding of that, and provides clear expectations for what she wants you to know. I'd take Dr. DePrince whenever possible.
She's COMPARATIVELY the easiest prof in all of chem at FSU. The chemistry will still be hard, the exams will still be difficult. However, there is a big curve. Helpful during office hours. Mandatory attendance through iclicker. Tests(including final) was 90% of grade so if you have test anxiety maybe not the best option idk.
DePrince is probably the best chemistry teacher FSU has! You must attend recitation but it is so worth it because she gives you worksheets every week on the topics you've covered that week that were old exam questions (great to study for exams). The exams are difficult so studying is a must! I would recommend her for both CHM1045 and CHM1046!
Tests are difficult, but she makes lectures interesting and gets the students involved with questions to help grasp the concepts. Its only her second time teaching 4130, but you would never know. The only thing is her tests questions are worded a little weird so its easy to get confused.
Professor DePrince is amazing. Her lectures and tests are tough, but if you put in effort you will pass, and pass well. I took her fro both gen chems and I'm very prepared for orgo. I recommend her highly. She's a blessing to freshmen take advantage of it.
GREAT professor. Chem is HARD in general, she does a great job teaching what you need to know. Study for tests, even though she does give a generous curve :) For anyone who says she's hard, she does a great job, the chemistry is what most people don't like. Def. would take her class again.
Had her for Chem 2 and Survey of Bio Chem. She is really great at explaining the information and if you go to office hours she is even more helpful there. Hard class but made more bearable with her!
She taught extra material that other teachers did not, making this class significantly harder than other chem classes.
DePrince was GREAT! Defiantly would suggest taking her for CHM 1050. Posts lots of problems to practice and posts the answers/solutions. Was very helpful and easily accessible
She isn't a bad prof, but she tended to overcomplicate things. The tests were a bit tricky, but there was a large curve at the end of the semester.
My idol. Dr. DePrince is so awesome for chemistry. No comment. Take her and you wont regret
Mrs. DePrince is a great Physical Chem teacher. The lectures were very interesting and she provided concepts clearly. She bases the class on concepts more than plugging in equations. Her quizzes are based on concepts learned in lecture. Set aside time to study for the class and you will find yourself with an A. She curves every exam based on avg.
Three exams and a final constitute your final grade. Tests are difficult and if you don't study pretty intensely you're screwed. Doesn't work a lot of examples in class because there isn't time. Dr. Deprince definitely cares about her students and chemistry.
Chem 2 is not at all easy, but she is a very good professor. Lectures aren't confusing and notes/practice problems are always available on Canvas. Recitation worksheets are the exact same style of questions that are on the exams. Exams are usually curved and also are graded with partial credit.
If you want a good grade you have to put the work in, chem 2 is a pretty hard class. Deprince is a great teacher and really wants to help students. The only problem is she doesn't do many practice problems in class, leaving you to figure out how to solve the recitation problems on your own if your TA isn't helpful. Huge curve on entire grade
By far the most caring and down to earth professor I've had in the past 3 years at FSU. She curves exams based on averages which is very fair, but take those weekly quizzes seriously because they can swing your grade. She sets her students up for success as much as she can and really listens to our feedback, so work for it and you will be rewarded
Chem II is not an easy class, but DePrince sets her students up for success. 3 tests and a final along with quizzes you'll take during recitation. She is a very nice person and go to office hours if you get the chance. Even though the class has a massive curve, put in the work and you can end with a good grade.
TAKE DR. DEPRINCE FOR GEN CHEM. Thank me later. She's an awesome teacher that cares about her students, and will help you if you need help. The exam averages were always around like a 50-60%, but don't be scared because there is a big curve too. You get in what you put in. Overall the best teacher for gen chem.
She an amazing teacher. Her lectures are very details, but her exams are very hard and tricky. She tends to keep repeating thing a lot. Make sure you pay attention to in class questions and homework. They are similar with a little tricks to them. She barely curve. She is very helpful in office hours. The textbook is helpful to study for the exam.
She is a great professor. I got the chance to understand chemistry because of her. She uses real life examples and understands that the subject is hard. She goes at a reasonable pace for people to understand and post the notes from class online. Good curve at the end!
Dr. Deprince is an excellent teacher who walks you through the problems she expects you to be able to do in class. She likes to go on tangents about the weird parts of chemistry which I found really interesting and enjoyed because she doesn't test on that stuff (except for the occasional extra credit question). You MUST do ALL homework questions!
It is very important to go to lecture to succeed in this class. She posts her notes, but hearing her explain them is vital. She lectures clearly and is straight forward. Very nice to students and clear about what will be on the tests. Grade is 60% from 3 tests, 30% from cumulative final, 10% easy WebAssign homework. I would recommend her for Chem 1
Very understanding professor, she really listens to students. I got an A- in the class and I got a 65, 79,85.5, and an 80.5 on the final w/ an 86 quiz avg. She really wants her students to do well, but this class is pretty conceptual based. Take notes and show up to class, or you will be so lost! Go to her office hours for help
She might be good if you plan on going into a chemistry career, but if not, go to a different professor. Everything is concept based and she chooses the hardest questions possible for her exams. I spent around 15 hours each week doing the homework and studying but I still failed every exam. She gives a huge curve at the end though so we don't fail.
Dr. DePrince is a great teacher. I was completley new to Quantom Mechanics and she helped me get a firm grasp on the basics. She posts her notes online, but you need to go to class to understand what she was talking about. She always had time to explain concepts outside of class. The class was based on 4 test.... Do the homework! Even the math part
Never reviewed a prof before this. This class is ridiculously hard for an intro level chem class. I have all As this semester (including chem lab with a different teacher) except for this class. I didnt pass a single exam out of the 3 she gave, even when studying for a week straight. She just shouldnt be teaching a lower level chemistry
Overall, not the worst. No chemistry class or professor is easy. I ended up with a B- in the class and received a 33 (with a curve) on the first exam. If you do the recitation worksheets and learn the steps before the exams you could easily get a 60 on each.
Chem 1 with Dr. Deprince will NOT be easy. My unit test average was definitely not the hottest, but the (BIG) curve at the end makes everything worth the trouble. Go to her office hours she's SUPER nice and helpful!
I loved Dr. Deprince. She was very easy to understand and gives you plenty of test prep. I have taken AP chem before, so it was easier for me than some, but I still felt that she was very easy to understand. There is extra credit on the tests, but its always something totally random that you might happen to know haha.
This was way harder than an intro Chem class should be. Exams were more complex than what was taught, & despite studying for 8+ hours each week, I failed every one. I had a serious inquiry & couldn't make it into her office hours & she refused to answer me. I've been an A/B student my whole life, and I failed this class. I would not recommend her.
The class has a big curve at the end so if that's enough motivation for you to select this teacher then by all means go on. I would not recommend her if you truly would like to learn the material and not just try to survive throughout the semester. She's a bit rude and doesn't give enough examples on material. Good luck you're going to need it.
Deprince completely overcomplicates gen chem. Studying for the exams didn't seem to even make a difference, considering the fact that they are extremely difficult. Office hours were super busy and she always left before I had a chance to ask questions. Go with a different professor who doesn't try to make every topic harder than it needs to be.
Deprince was OK. She seemed to be kinda helpful during office hours when discussing/calculating my grade. Her test were soo hard, even when I thought I was ready I open the exam and I would wanna cry cause of frustration. One good thing is the curve and her grading scale was based on the class test scores & she post all her notes
The best chem professor at FSU by far. She goes above and beyond to help her students inside and outside the classroom, whether that be in the form of additional office hours in test weeks, review sessions, practice exams, and posting the lectures online. She teaches with a passion that makes lectures engaging. She makes you work but it's doable.
Dr. Deprince is one of THE BEST professors. Exams are difficult, and you have to study every week. Go to recitation, a lot of the exam questions are similar concepts. She offers homework examples as well and dedicates a lot of time for office hours/ meetups. HUGE curve at the end. My exam average was a high C, and I ended up with a B+ in the class.
Useless. Had medical excuse that she wouldn't accept. One quiz every week, decides to give two quizzes the last week unannounced.
I had Dr. DePince for CHM1020C online and it was lots of work, but not too hard. This was her first year teaching it so she didn't really answer questions asked, so ask the TAs. When doing anything online in Second Life, take note of everything on the screen because the post labs and quizzes are extremely specific.
Unlimited attempts on quizzes, two attempts on post-labs, she drops your lowest quiz, post lab, and exam, no final. Don't know what more you could ask for. I highly suggest doing the post-labs while doing the lab, the questions can be super specific and I found it was way easier than writing everything down.
her tests are tough, not gonna lie, but she is a really good teacher. she actually teaches!! she gives lots of practice with homework assignments (that you dont have to turn in), recitation, and questions from the textbook. she also posts "old exams" that look really similar to what you'll take! absolutely love her
If you didn't take AP or IB chemistry in high school, I pray for your soul if you have to take this class. Homework is easy, but her tests and quizzes are impossible to get an A. Questions on the tests/quizzes are sometimes completely new questions that you've never practiced before and there is usually never enough time to complete the tests.
Would probably have been better if it were not taken through zoom.
She is a very sweet teacher and you can tell she enjoys teaching Chemistry. Her exams are VERY difficult, especially if you do not attend class. You will have homework every week as well as a quiz. All I can say is that if you have her as a teacher, be prepared to take away a lot of time to study for her exams!!
Probably the best chem professor at FSU. As long as you are paying attention during her lectures and going to office hours with her or the TAs, you'll do fine. Only took her class over zoom so I'm not sure what her class is like in person, but I think her tests are pretty far and she doesn't assign a bunch of homework.
The best thing she did was curve our grades at the end of the year. There was excessive work and everyone in my class had a difficult time. We requested more time for exams and she did not give it to us. Although there was a lot of extra help given to us and she was very responsive, that didn't take away from how difficult her exams were.
The best professor I have had so far. Easy to follow and does a good job teaching, the material it self is a bit difficult but if you pay attention and do the HW you will be fine.
I LOVE Dr. DePrince. Best Chem teacher I have ever taken. Chem2 isn't easy, but she explains all the material very well. The course is very fair, and she wants all her students to succeed.
DePrince was the worst professor I've ever had. Her class was way harder than a Chem I class should be. Everyone failed her tests, the last one being an average of a 49% (there are 200 people in this class). I would want to cry every time i start her exams. Yes she does curve at the end but it sucks we don't know whether we pass until the end.
This is my second time taking chem 1, i failed the first time. taking deprince was the BEST decision ive made. she does her notes during lecture & uploads them for the class. EVERYTHING U NEED TO KNOW IS IN THE NOTES!! all the quizzes, and recitation problems easily make up half the exams. also, everything is open-book, open-note, & no honorlock.
People who are giving Deprince a bad rep on here obviously dont study enough or put enough time into hw or recitations. chemistry isnt meant to be easy, but its not extremely difficult either. Deprince has made this class as simple as it can be. Also there are so many little assignments that she gives to help boost our grade too!!
Being able to see how much she cares about her students is what got me through this class. She responds to emails quickly and does a big final grade curve. I ended with a 79 but got a B. Exams are difficult; there's homework and a quiz every week along with some other small assignments that keep you super busy. DePrince is the best prof for CHM1046
Chem is a very hard class any way you look at it, and she definitely didnt help with that as she tends to add in extra material. Other than that, you have to study lots, the tests and quizzes are incredibly difficult. She definitely accounts for this though and puts a massive curve on the class. Lots of little assignments for extra content +points
She's a good professor. Exams are difficult though. Make sure to study her lecture notes and quizzes. There's a HUGE curve at the end. I got a 65, 72, and 73 on the tests with a 61 on the final. I had a 72% in the class and ended with a B in the course. Make sure you don't get behind on the lectures.
Even though I did struggle throughout the semester, I would def take Dr. DePrince again! She gives amazing notes, records her lecture, and gives fair tests based on quizzes and recitations. I honestly wouldn't have passed chem w/o the help of the TA's & office hours. Fortunately, she curves the final grade on the end based on the class' average.
The reason why people don't like DePrince is because they don't put in any effort. The amount of time on exams is fair so long as you study the material. You are given about a week to complete homework assignments, so don't wait until the last minute to complete them. I had a 75 in the class which curved to an A. Open note exams.
I didnt watch a single lecture and ended up with an A because of the curve. I took AP chem in high school so this was just kinda review. Her recitations are just like the exams. She really cares about her students and actually likes to teach so theres not more you can ask for. If this your first chem class, put in the effort and youll do fine.
god the class put me through hell and back, first test the class average was in the 50s, 70% of your grade is based on 3 exams and the final (20%). I got 52 on first test, 74 on second test and like a 47 on third test and 84 on final exam and ended with an A-. There is a good curve on the exam. but I got these grades and worked MY BUTT OFF STUFYING
I had kind of a hard time getting concepts just from the lectures alone, but homework and office hours helped. The tests are almost all multiple choice but EXTREMELY hard. you really have to understand the concepts well and the math problems will be like the homework except with a twist. Curve at the end is good I had a 83 and ended with an A.
Dr. Deprince came through and saved my GPA and she's a queen. If you take her for 3120, her exams are open book and open note. She uploads all of her notes and is very thorough when she's explaining the material. She's also super kind and seems to genuinely care. By far one of the best chem professors fsu has.
Definitely one of the best chem 2 professors at FSU if not the best. The exams are hard but she teaches the content really well. There's weekly homework and short quizzes.
Took class online during Covid. DePrince was very caring and genuine. Lectures were very helpful since she would write down notes/problems rather than reading them from a slide. Exams were tough, math in this class can be confusing. Do practice problems. Chem II is a lot of equations. The more you practice on your own, the better you will do.
Dr. DePrince is too intelligent to be teaching this course, I found it was hard to understand since she didn't 'dumb it down' for an average kid. I struggled a lot and had to put in a lot of effort outside of class to do well. She is helpful in OH and will sit and explain multiple ways till you get it. Study old exams & recitation problems
Amazing professor for Chem 1. The material was a little difficult, but it was taught well. TAs/LAs were very helpful. Doing practice problems helps a lot. Exams are rushed, but there are enough other grades to balance out. Attendance is not mandatory, but there are a lot of participation points. She always posts lecture notes if you miss a class
Bridget DePrince is literally amazing, highly highly recommend you take her. She is so understanding and actually teaches.
Dr. Deprince is a nice person and offers lots of office hours for her course. Gen Chem is always going to be a tough class and you need to understand that going to class and doing the homework is not going to cut it for this course. There are 3 exams and a final that make up the majority of your grade and your grade is curved at the end.
She's horrendous. Get ready to get homework and quizzes shunted at you even during the week before finals--with 0 regard for other work students may have, because this class will treat you like a child who cannot study on their own.
Don't take this class. She gives you a lot of resources outside of classes which helps I guess. Multiple quizzes and homework assignments every week, including days before exams and even DURING FINALS WEEK. She curves your letter grade at the end of the semester but you literally know know if your going to pass or fail until the last day.
DePrince is the best CHM professor you can take based on what I've heard of other professors. She is well-spoken, nice, fair, clear in her explanations, makes really good notes, is so understanding towards her students, etc. It's still a hard class, but she does her job perfectly. Open-note, open-book exams.
Dr. DePrince is a very kind and caring individual! Class was composed of 17 quizzes,12 hw, 3 exams, final exam. Pre-lecture assignments are due before most lectures. I feel as though I learned the material very well, but the exams were difficult. 25 q's on Canvas and only 50 min. She curved at the end of the course, but not by much. Good luck!
She isn't the best professor as everyone says. You learn something in class and then the exam are somewhat things that she doesn't even teach in class. She is too smart to teach the class. Exams are too long and quizzes are too conceptual that even my chem lab TA said was very advanced for us. The curve at the end wasn't helpful. 1/10 never again.
I have mixed feelings about Deprince. While she was the best option out of all of the chem 1 profs at FSU and was very knowledgeable, our first 2 exams had 25 questions in 50 minutes and were so hard to finish on time. This class was so much work and studying. I got a 60, 69, and 84 on our 3 exams and an 81 on final and ended up with A-.
Dr. Deprince as a person is really sweet but her teaching is horrible. The homework given did not help with the quizzes at all. The quizzes/recitation problems did not help with the exams. I was stressed so much in this class and the curve is the only thing that saved me. Be prepared to stress, especially if you're not good at math.
DePrince is such a sweet and understanding professor. Truly her lectures are spectacular, I never felt as if I was missing any information during them. The quizzes were frequent but theres so many that if you do bad on one you're fine. The curve at the end of the class is extremely generous. Open-note everything, but exams require time management
The amount of quizzes and homework is excessive; however, the amount helps balance your grade in the end. You will think you have failed the course until she applies a generous curve at the end. There were four exams and my grades were F, F, A, and C. I passed with a B after the curve. You have to keep up because it is new material every lecture.
DR Deprince was THE WORST professor I have had so far at FSU she was extremely bad at teaching and I mean terrible. Only drew on her little iPad and expected those to be enough in notes. Had to drop the course to save my GPA her class is too hard for no reason. She is probably the better option out of everyone but I still would avoid her.
Analytical chem is tough, but her lectures and my previous chem 2 knowledge have helped me throughout this course. 3 free response exams, tons of quizzes, and a final exam. I do not really like the quizzes as they are on canvas and you do not get partial credit. Other than that, you have recitation worksheets, homework, and tons of study tools.
Dr. Deprince made analytical chem very easy. There are a lot of homework assignments, quizzes, and easy in class participation questions along with 3 exams and a final. The extra graded assignments help boost your grade if you don't do the best on the exams which is great. Great with communication, and her TAs are super helpful too.
I took this course right after I finished my gen chems, and I think that that really helped me pass the first two exams, which were literally a review. But exam 3 was very difficult and most of the class failed it. 3 exams, 1 cumulative final. All free response with partial credit. Homework, quizzes, and participation help boost your grade a bit.
The best chemistry professor at FSU! Dr. DePrince is extremely knowledgable and presents information in a way that is easily understood. She's also a very kind and accommodating person. If you go over her posted lecture notes and go to recitation you will be totally fine.
She does a fantastic job of engaging students and keeping them listening. Always hated science courses before having her! She does a great job of explaining things (especially if you've never learned it before) and she genuinely cares about each students progress. TA's and LA's were also incredibly helpful this year. Fantastic teacher overall!!!
This class was a gen chem review up until the 3rd exam. Most of the class failed that exam. I think that this class was more difficult than orgo imo. STUDYYYY!!!! Do the recitation questions, redo quizzes, do the homework, do the reviews she posts. DO NOT CRAM! I finished with a B, but i probably could have done better if i studied way more.
Professor Deprince is a great professor. Her classes are lecture heavy but even in a class of 300+ students she tries her best to get to know everyone who wants to be known. Each class has interactive questions on TopHat that she uses to understand what the class needs help with. She and her TAs/LAs are extremely caring and helpful.
I would not recommend it. She is compassionate but she does not teach well. Refuses to use a PowerPoint, constantly getting sidetracked. Spent all semester talking about a curve that only benefits the people failing the class. Earned a B grade curved to a B.
deprince is so so sweet and most definitely caring. but, her class is simply impossible. i studied and studied and still failed all 3 tests as well as the final. she gives a quiz every week but they help your grade a little. she gives an extremely generous curve which is how i failed all tests and still passed. take her over the other professors
She is the best of the worsts. Not the best at teaching but super nice. Exams make up most of your grade and are pretty difficult. Study recitation problems and memorize the wording of questions and you should be good for exams. I got a D,B,C, and a C on the final and passed the class with a B+ there is a curve at the end but it is not that big.
Professor Deprince is kind to students but teaches like she is lecturing to graduate students who have already a considerable knowledge of chemistry. During lectures, she skips over some steps and uses challenging terminology as she assumes you already know them. I have never taken a class as difficult as this one. Grade depends HEAVILY on exams.
Professor DePrince had a challenging class, but, after all, it is chemistry! She was available for office hours often. Her tests demonstrated lots of concept-based questions followed by math based. I got two B's and a C on her exams, but ended up with an A in the class due to her curve.
She is the kindest teacher I have ever had at this school. Yes, the tests are tough but you can tell she wants the best for everyone in the room. She has a very strong motherly vibe to her and I felt comfortable enough to talk to her about any concerns.
Was excited to take her as she got generally good reviews on here. However, my experience in her class was quite the opposite. Difficult quizzes every single week. Test heavy and tests are always harder than she lets on. Studied over 20 hours for each, never exceeded a C. The final was drastically different than exams and curve did nothing for me.
Tests have nothing that was in class or in recitation problems. Each test is a complete mystery. Quizzes every week, her lectures were nothing like recitation. She offers a pretty big curve, and she is nice but this is not a class I would recommend.
Her exams stop me from a 5. 40 qs 50 minutes. Didn't feel I'd time to think. Chm2 is harder but from someone who made an A in 1 w/o curve I don't feel her class assessed ability properly, quick tricks over understanding. Short time means you can't check for mistakes. I'd recommend her if she changed her tests; lectures are good & she's funny.
She makes the exams soooo hard. No extra credit. Class is mandatory. I go to office hours and recitation every week and still fail every exam. Expect to put in a lot of time outside of the classroom. You have to watch preclass lectures beforehand. Lectures are confusing. I would take Hanson.
She was caring person and was understanding but her class was insane. At first the exams were online but half way through the semester she changed it to be in person one week before the third exam. Her office hours were sometimes helpful but she'll talk about analytical chem and orgo topics even though it was gen chem 2. Lectures were confusing.
You have to go to class! Do not fall behind because it is impossible to catch up! I loved her as a teacher, but the class was nearly impossible. The only reason I ended with a B was because of the HUGE curve. The exams are nothing like the in-class, recitation, or homework problems, but if you really try to understand the content you can survive
very premed oriented, little math. DONT TAKE if not great at tests. superb lectures but there was inverse relation to my effort & test grades; i may be built poorly! Doesn't post enough of her own problem for tests which primarily try tricking. Hard to fail, but if you want to do well get prior tests from past students & stay calm. good luck!
Amazing person very exam heavy.minimal math all exams are multiple choice. Study the recitation and class slides and you should manage to pass. The curve is huge my exam average was a 70 and passed class with a B. Aim to get a high grade on the first exam which I relatively the easiest to boost your exam average. Curve is based off exam averages.
Great person but class was very hard. It's test heavy and most of the questions are nothing like the examples given in class or recitation. Ended up with an 82 in the class and only got an A because of the curve. Don't believe what she says about what's on the final or midterms, study EVERYTHING!!!
Hands down best chemistry professor at FSU. If you show up to office hours and get to know her and the TA's, there is plenty of help to succeed. She is the most caring and kind professor I've had and has so much compassion for students that are truly trying. Be prepared to practice and study, but an A is more than possible in her class.
Worst teacher I have EVER had at FSU. Told us that 50% of the students should be failing the exams. I studied for weeks for exams and they were IMPOSSIBLE. She applied a generous curve at the end but was failing the whole semester until end. Her tests have multiple "tricks" to them that made it hard to assess knowledge and the final was ridiculous.
She is a kind woman; however, her teaching style is not for everyone. She doesn't assign homework and many of the problems given do not align with the exam. She also doesn't allow you to see your grade until right before the final. Average was never higher than a D on every exam. Her curves were nice though.
W teacher
To her, her tests are " fair". The averages for all tests are 50s, something she says "should be normalized". Many A students are receiving Cs in her class. It didn't seem that she cared about her individual students and their failures. Instead, she points out how we "should've known" that important detail she said once in a lecture 3 weeks ago.
She is a good teacher and I have a great grasp on the content. However her exams are extremely challenging and in my opinion unfair. I did everything she recommended and still averaged a 50%. I also retook her exams with the lecture notes out and still count break a 50. I think her exams were made to confuse and trick you. Avoid this class!!
All exam averages were a D or less. The exams are nothing like the class material or practice problems (and she barely gives any practice). The exams are insanely difficult and honestly so unfair. Her class is impossible to do well in even if you do everything she says. Also don't bother emailing because she won't answer.
Her lectures are informative and she's good at explaining the topics. She intentionally makes the tests very hard and curves them heavily which was different than any class I've taken before. If you aren't present at 3/4 of the lectures, you immediately lose 10% from your grade.
Very caring, and does teach very nicely and straight forward. However, the grading criteria is really vague for some reason [she'll justify this in the class using some teaching complex lol, professor BS]. I don't even know how well I have to do on the final to get an A/don't know if there are A-'s/B+'s. Tests make the grade, and they are hard.
I know a lot of people had issues with her teaching methods as they found her lectures hard and not applicable to the tests but personally I believe she gave us proper instruction and guidance to do well. Her tests are hard and you will get a 50-60 on one but she is a generous curver and will ensure failing is hard. Highly recommend her for CHM1046
DePrince wants you to LEARN chemistry. Because of this, she doesn't ask you to memorize stuff and just spit it out on the test. Her tests are concept-based, & you have to thoroughly understand the material to do well on them. But if you have a few bad tests you can still pass, & even get an A! She is very kind & office hours are SO HELPFUL! :)
Dr. Deprince is very friendly and caring. However, her class is so, so hard! I studied hours and hours for every test and still averaged around a 50. I did everything she recommended and nothing changed unfortunately. The curve is nice but not as much as it is made out to be, considering most of the people I know still got a C in her class.
She like to keep you on your toes.. (if she projects this on a PowerPoint, you've been warned)
Averaged a 70 on the unit tests, got an A on the final, ended up with an A
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. The class averages were in the 50s and 60s for most exams and you don't really know what letter grade you have until the end when she curves so the whole semester I was stressing. I would study hours on end just to get 60s on the exams. I would avoid if you could. You will learn better with Dillon.
People who say she's hard didn't put in enough effort. Any Chem class at FSU is notoriously hard and then people get surprised when they have to put effort in. She curves all the tests, but students get scared when they see a raw score that isn't pretty. Her class is doable don't let RMP scare you.
Analytical chem is dry but she added as much personality as possible! Extremely fair grading , so nice!!
Dr. DePrince is an amazing professor! The material is difficult, but her in-class lectures and iClicker practice questions are extremely helpful. I felt that the test questions were all very reasonable based on what we had covered, and I think she sets her students up well to succeed. I also highly recommend attending her office hours!
She is a great professor, but she teaches many high level classes, and I think because she knows so much she kind of expects you to meet her there and assumes you understand things. Other than that she is good at explaining and cares that you succeed- huge curves for all the exams
This class was by far the hardest class I have ever taken. I felt as though the test were 10 times harder than anything gone over in class or recitation. I found that no matter how much I studied, I basically failed every test. Best resources for test prep was recitation questions, iclicker questions, and office hours.
Only 75% attendance is required for full participation points. Exams are extremely difficult and she provides no study materials. The questions in class and recitation are way easier than the exam questions. I did all of the textbook questions to study and I always did well despite half the class failing. She also curves at the end of the sem.
Maria Montessori once said that "The greatest sign of success for a teacher... is to be able to say, 'The children are now working as if I did not exist.'" Deprince has obviously taken this to heart as she forgoes teaching entirely. That being said her curve was very nice.
Professor Bridget's class is challenging, but the lectures and iClicker questions are very helpful. Use Unstuck AI, the textbook, and office hours to succeed. Exams are tough but she curves generously.
If you listen to any review, listen to this one. She's nice, not a good professor. Worst class I've ever taken, and I've taken a lot of classes. She expects you to learn on your own, so If you aren't good at teaching yourself, id stay away. I've done all the material given, gone to office hours, tutoring, etc, still lost. Save yourself the stress.
Professor DePrince's passion for teaching is there, but her teaching style is horrible and ineffective. You teach the material to yourself then come to class to do problems on them, if you don't understand the lecture now you don't understand the problems. Exams are difficult and what we do in class is nothing compared to what we get tested on.
She curves the heck out of every test. If you take notes, go through them after lectures, and do practice questions before tests it should be super easy to pass. She's very good at testing conceptual knowledge (not just memorization) on tests which I think some people aren't used to, but it's what makes her such a good teacher.
Very good professor, while attendance isn't mandatory it is definitely a must to show up to class due to Aktiv in-class assignments (they are usually open for less than 2 minutes, being in class is easier as it ties into the lecture). Missing minor assignments will not kill your grade, the TAs and LAs are also helpful for any questions.
The worst part of the class is that Deprince isn't making the tests. Dr. Deprince's lectures are very helpful and cover the material you read about the night before pretty thoroughly. There are a lot of online assignments that become lost in the sea of other work, so be sure to stay on top of it. Tests are VERY difficult though. Be careful.
Dr. DePrince holds great lectures and explains in a way that is easy to understand and she uses simple analogy. She also posts notes online.
Dr. Deprince seems very nice and caring. As a professor, I found her lectures generally easy to understand. However, the study guides do not match the tests. The tests felt way harder than the study guides, which made the class difficult. The online assignments are easy to forget about, so it's important to keep up with them every day.
Deprince is nice, but does not teach effectively. In class, she only goes over simple concepts and expects you to go home and know how to do everything despite barely spending class time on it. 4 exams total, and study guides given have nothing to do with the actual exam. This class was extremely hard if you are not good at chemistry.
gives lectures but that are just reviews of the classavo homework the night before, and the tests are much more difficult than any of the work you did. the final wasn't too hard though.
She is a really nice lady, but the class was definitely not easy. There are four exams that cover most of your grade, and if you do not do good on them, you're basically screwed. There are corrections, but she grades them very hard, and you only get half of the points back. The study guides and questions do not match the difficulty of the exams.
Overall this was definitely a weed out class and very tough. DePrince is a decent professor, she is definitely very kind and will try to help out your grade and make exceptions whenever she can. However the exams are really tough and not proportionately so to the practice problems given in class. Overall I would take her again as a professor.
If you know some chemistry, you'll probably do fine. If not, it can be tough. The lectures cover the basics, but the exams are harder, so practice lots of problems. Deprince is kind and helps fairly, but that's not always enough. I would focus on the first three exams—they're a big part of your grade. My mistake was not asking for more help
The third exam and forward it is conceptual math and not taught well. I understood all the concepts, then thrown questions on the exam that were nothing like I've seen before. I knew the content but the tests were not a good representation of anything taught. The average of the final being a 59% is not right and shows how bad the teaching was.
She is such an amazing and kind person, but that's it. We have pre-lecture hw the night before class, and all she does is go over what we learned and writes on her iPad. She doesn't give give enough practice problems, and the exams are way harder than what we are taught. Beware, she only showed up 75% of the semester and does not respond to emails!
Not as hard as everyone says. All exams have corrections except the final but having a little background in chem definitely helps. Responds to emails 10% of the time. She is a very nice teacher and actually teaches but the lecture is often not helpful for the content on tests. You can pass if you do all the homework and test corrections.
Exams are a fat percentage of your grade (with no extra credit) and the average on the last two exams were Fs. Exam questions look nothing like the practice problems/quizzes. Not all high school students took chemistry, especially if you were dual-enrollment, it shouldn't be expected just to pass. If you're taking CHM 2, avoid her at all costs.
Curriculum changed this year, and its awful! Exams are nothing like the practice problems that we do. She DOESN'T respond to emails, and she only post notes without lecture recordings, which makes them useless as it's just drawings from her iPad. Exam avgs are in the 60s and she seemed content with that!?! My high school chem teacher was better!
Failed to teach. The average on the exams is alarmingly low, and I'm sure if it wasn't for getting points back from recitation quizzes then many people would be failing this class. The exams are harder than the content learned, and taking every exam online has many flaws.
If our exam averages were garbage but everyone did relatively well on the Classavo/AKTIV/Quizzes… Clearly the exam content isn't matching the practice we're being given. I barely passed because my exam scores were trash, despite doing good on everything else. I needed this class for chemistry 2 and don't feel confident at all.
DePrince is such a sweet professor where her personality can bright up the lecture hall! Everyone stating that everything she taught was not on the exam is mainly false. The questions on the assigned homework and post-class assignments were almost verbatim whats on the exam, just worded differently. THERE ARE TEST CORRECTIONS!! Study well :)
Dr. De Prince is an awesome teacher and her lectures were super helpful. The Aktiv and Classavo problems were useful if you understood them, office hours/TAs were a big help. The class is definitely passable if you put in the effort. People complaining about exam averages probably struggled once they realized they couldn't cheat.
She's very nice and clear with expectations but assigns a lot of homework. This is a weedout class for a reason! That being said, exams are tricky and altogether count for 70% of your grade - you'll do poorly if you have test anxiety.Go to office hours and ask specific questions.I had this class at 8am - DO NOT SKIP. it's tempting but will hurt you
Legitimately the most watered down college chemistry course ever. At any other institution, this class is harder; hell, AP chemistry is too. Don't trust people claiming practice isn't like the exams, they quite literally are. DePrince gives post-class & pre-lecture assignments on top of workshops. They must have not attended class & done assignment
Regardless of what previous comments on here say, ask previous students about grade averages. Don't ask about their grades, ask about the CLASS AVERAGE. In my opinion, take this course somewhere else, especially if you need it for chemistry 2
Deprince is nice and all but I don't think she's a good professor. I feel like I gained nothing out of going to lecture as all she would do was scribble on her iPad. LAs were also not helpful at all as they would ChatGPT any question that was asked and would just say they weren't taught the material until Chem 2. Very happy I only needed Chem 1.
This class is not as difficult as people are trying to make it seem. She is a very fair grader, and gives many chances to get points back. There are always test corrections, and she gives full points for online practice problems. Chem can be easy if you don't skip and you pay attention.
no curve on final despite class average being below failing
Her class is doable but you have to work for an A. She does a good job lecturing and is very kind. But I felt unprepared for the exams despite studying a lot. Her problems were not as hard as the exams. It helps to go to office hours as she is kind in person but not by email. Her class averages are pretty low so keep that in mind.
Her class does require a lot of studying (as expected) and pre-lecture notes are required. Practice exercises are provided but I found myself relying on the textbook for most of the studying (especially for exams). Overall, I enjoyed the class but it is definitely a hard course and you need to be prepared to dedicate a good amount of time.
the reviews on this page seem mixed but i think that she was a great professor teaching a mildly difficult course for students who were either going to study chem for the rest of their lives or would never touch it again. literally just do the homework, show up to class, and ask questions and you'll be fine. i didn't do that and ended with a b- lol
Deprince's lectures and general class set up seemed very disorganized. This class requires practice problems and pre-lecture notes, so something will be due every single day. Study guides have absolutely nothing to do with her tests and very little useful material is given to study for tests, and for this reason i do not recommend.
After 2 days of chem 2 w/ someone else, I needed to come back and leave Dr. DePrince a good review because I didn't realize how good she was until it was too late. Chem is hard, but a professor who actually teaches it to you and works through examples helps. The disconnect is that the questions on the test are very different than the workshops.
I am so grateful for Dr. DePrince. I moved on to Chemistry 2 (CHM 1046) with Dr. Stephanie Dillon and it has instantly made me miss Dr. DePrince. Chemistry is a hard course, so go to class, take notes, ask questions and do your outside of class work. The textbook is free online and just a resource for practice problems.
I thought Dr. DePrince was great! She is a caring professor and makes the course expectations really clear. Taking notes on the Classavo assignments helped me a lot. It also helps that she gives plenty of practice with the Aktiv and optional textbook questions. I definitely recommend her class!
So many online assignments, super time-consuming. Exams were extremely difficult. Studied for hours and could not even PASS an exam to save my life. Basically have to teach yourself everything and she just reviews in lecture.
Honestly, she was very interesting and cares about her students. We got a large curve on each of her exams and she tries to make things relatable. Didn't read the textbook and still made a B. She is one of the most competent chem professors at FSU.
the only reason that she is rated so high is that she used to offer curves on the exams, test corrections, and people used cheat in her class
She's a decent professor. For Fall '24, she did test corrections after every exam, getting half points back. She didn't do this for the final, which was very fair. When people were upset with that, they review bombed her. Class is full of stupid and lazy people that don't even show up to lectures and complain about failing, so what do you expect.
All of my friends who had taken her prior all talked about how great she was not because she knew how to teach them but because of her amazing curve that made anyone who got a C or higher get an A. I was so blessed to be in the class where she decided to get rid of her curves making it ten times harder for everyone.
I like her alot, shes nice and instructions are very straight foward. She is here to help you, however I had a horrible TA and your TA is what makes or breaks your grade. They are the ones grading quizes and some test.
Great teacher, very knowledgeable, textbook "required" but honestly not used, lectures are very useful, gives lots of homework and tough class but just because its hard content not due to the teacher, had bad TA which made recitation and grading bad.
Bad teaching methods: really just assumes you know everything and only gives examples rather than steps to solve problems, which does not help if you come to the class with no previous knowledge. Very passive-aggressive, if you want help and you're not doing well in the class, she basically tells you to f off. She's the only decent option tho.
Her class is very enjoyable if you put in the effort to show up and do the small amount of homework. (One in class assignment and one online per week) She is very caring and tells you exactly what you need to do to succeed. Tests are 20 multiple choice and 4 short answer, and her study guides help so much. She deserves a much higher overall rating.
GO TO LECTURES she covers work that will be important! She is nice and understanding, HOWEVER, she does not rly respond to emails and only holds office ours once a week on Thursdays (exams Wednesday) so if you don't know something figure it out on your own. Also she releases grades late. Also there wasn't a lot of study material, so USE CHATGPT!
Dr. Deprince as a person is very sweet and perfectly lovely. As a teacher.... not as great. The exams were not created by Dr. Deprince but she made the study guides (that were wildly inaccurate compared to the tests). She also didn't show up to many lectures and left teaching to her TAs and LAs. My grade turned out ok in the end despite all. 🤷‍♀️
She is very nice and I found her lecture style to be easy to follow and not too complex. I rarely went to class yet succeeded by using the textbook (important), her study guides, which I found to be very similar to our exams, and referring back on our homework and in-class assignments. Definitely would take again.
She is a very sweet person who truly care about her students. My TA, whom I had for recitation, was hard to understand and a little harsh with grading. DePrince is more than willing to make sure that the tests were graded fairly and is flexible. Make sure to PAY ATTENTION in class.
She was very nice, approachable, and always willing to help. No attendance, but I do recommend you go as what she lectures will be on exam. Use Chat for HW(to get 100). For exams, use the study guides she posts, re-do the HW, and you'll pass.Exams are 16 Multiple Choice(64pts), 4 SA(36pts). Exams were graded by TAs. Can be regraded, she's more fair
I cannot speak to how DePrince has taught in past semesters, but anybody complaining about the Chem 1 class in sp 25 is just being a wuss. DePrince was so nice, and took a class that I despised and made it super engaging and informative. If you didn't do well in this class- you didn't try.
Dr. DePrince is definitely one of the sweetest professors at FSU. I think she is a fantastic lecturer and very personable as well. The only reason I have a low grade in this course is because I tended to miss lecture quite a bit (it was an 8 AM), but when I did attend I really enjoyed her lecturing style.
The people who complain about her are lazy bums. You have to study, chemistry is hard regardless of the prof but DePrince makes it manageable. I truly enjoyed her class, she is an amazing professor. I really struggled at the beginning but that was my fault; not hers. Put in the work and you will be okay.
thinks everyone already knows what shes teaching and the slides have only basic definitions, no helpful work. no test corrections too. unless you already took chem one don't expect an A
Chemistry is hard, but Deprince does her best to make it digestible. The structure of her class ensures you are actively learning the material. GO TO LECTURES! They are so helpful and will help you succeed. You must study in advance, practice the aktiv's, and attend office hours if you want to do well. Deprince genuinely cares about her students
Dr. DePrince is truly the rudest professor I have ever had. While she offers some helpful advice and is initially nice, she gets upset if you ask her too many questions during office hours. Her lectures are useless. She does not even release test averages. Work through the textbook and homework and you will be fine.
unresponsive via email
Deprince structured the class very well. If you use your full effort, getting a good grade in this class is not impossible. I found that the back-of-the-book textbook problems were a game-changer when practicing for exams. Stay on top of lectures and homework. Do not fall behind, and you will be fine. Deprince is a super nice professor.
Prof DePrince is somewhat nice, lectures are really fast and do not contain nearly enough info to learn the subject. Exams are pretty hard and require a lot of study time. Couldnt say she is a great professor, just average or below average. I would recommend skipping lecture and just studying yourself.
incompassionate professor who lectures fast, especially while doing problems, but slows down to focus on nonsense that's not on the test. also changed extra credit policy so you don't get any of the same benefits as classes before.
Very incompassionate professor. The only students that consider her “kind” are the ones that haven't had to have any 1-on-1 conversations with her, have never had an absence that went over her 24-hour requirement, or didn't have a question in lecture. Never had a professor like her in my life before. Hope to never have one like her again.
My favorite thing she does is when you're emailing her about something and she completely ignores you, or if she does respond, she stops after like the second response. But is still updating Canvas/class announcements.
Does not respond to ANY emails.
take advantage of her office hours and all the assignments and practice she gives. her lectures and work are similar to the tests and exams.
theres no more extra credit. exams are somewhat similar to practice exam. homework is helpful. quizzes every week and sometimes wont learn material for quizzes until day before. seems passionate and cares abt her students.
It's a hard class I get that, Dr. DePrince is definitely a nice person, but something about the way this class is structured just does not resonate with me. A zero extensions policy just means there's work I'll miss the ability to do. Do as many practice problems as you can because the tests are very conceptual.
She was such a lovely teacher and you truly get what you put in for this class.
