She had absolutely no interest in teaching the class and really didn't want to be there. She was sarcastic to students and went over the material very vaguely.
tough subject yes, but she tries her best. not a great teacher but she makes it up by giving easy tests. the kids who did bad probably deserved it.
very good teacher! enjoyed her class and everyone i talked to liked her as well!
Nice professor, tries her best to engage the class, although the material itself is pretty boring (due to structured curriculum). Don't back out of you have her for your chem module, she's pretty decent about grades, and the amount of work is bearable.
Was not helpful in class at all. Mandatory attendance. Very easy but not fun nor do you learn much.
Clear & helpful professor, but very dull subject matter. Lots of work involved, but homework is done in assigned groups making it bearable. Tests aren't hard, but you have to be moving FAST to get them done in time.
it was actually listed as es 140, i think i sat in the wrong class
She's not really helpful but the class is too easy.
Unlike some other CHBE professors, Rogers doesn't seem to know the material like the back of her hand. She is still clear and helpful. She works several examples in class, and those + the homework are very similar to the exams. Exams are open book + note sheet and were all very fair/straightforward. Basic weekly quizzes.
ChBe 161 w Mrs Rogers you have to put in effort to do well in. Three tests each with simple-ish problems based on the homework. Bi-weekly quizzes. Final is really tough, not very similiar to the tests, its based on the problem solving techniques that you pick up if you DO THE HOMEWORK slowlyadvance & dont look solutions. This is key to class.
Easy class for ChE, tests are short so dont mess up or you lose a lot of points. HWs and quizzes are simple and straight from the notes. Final project was graded rather arbitrarily and she refuses to give anyone a 100. She isnt very enthusiastic about the content either
not helpful at all... many explanations are based on facts and not on why or how those facts came about. Sarcastic and rude.
Teaching is just kinda average. She goes over problems in class but tends to focus on concepts more than strategies and sometimes glosses over essential details assuming student will be able to connect the dots. Problem sets and quizzes weekly, and tests are like harder versions of those two.
She is not familiar with the materials and can not explain concepts or answer questions clearly. All she tries to do is going through the powerpoint, by reading the text printed on handouts she provides, so the lectures are very boring and you won't learn much. There is no deriveation so it's more about memorizing. Wouldn't recommend.
Her lectures are boring and discourage student engagement. Nobody asks questions because we all know she can't answer them. Tests are easy to make up for how little of the content is actually absorbed.
Inside, I think she's a nice person, but there's something missing from her in lectures. Doesn't quite have the ability to explain things conceptually / intuitively. Literal mountains of homework. Exams very long and difficult. Although you'll come out of the class learning what you needed to learn, the class itself is a frustrating struggle.
The lectures were too boring for me to ever go. However, prof rodgers has very fair tests that can be passed easily as long as you go to class. i recommend
Dr. Rogers is overall not a great professor; she oftentimes cannot seem to communicate what she wants you to know or what her tests and quizzes will cover. The online aspect of the class is extremely intensive and almost unrelated to what you learn in the actual class.
Straightforward class. Lecture is bland and material is self-teachable. Prof is not very helpful and will mostly likely refer you to textbook or lecture slides for any questions.
Dr. Rogers is not good. She is rarely ever helpful and seems to not have a firm grasp of the content she is teaching. Furthermore she is often rude and condescending.
She is really boring and a very poor lecturer. She just reads off the lecture slides which often have mistakes on them. When she is solving example problems she can't remember how to do them and often needs help solving them.
She was very unclear on what material would be on exams. When someone would ask, she would give a snarky response. It was extremely unclear and it caused a lot of confusion for many students. Also, everyone cheats on quizzes which are worth 15% of your whole grade! So if you have some morals, then your quiz grade is below average and youre screwed.
I dont understand why Rogers gets so much hate. Her lectures are very to the point and you can pay attention or not, she doesnt care. Homework is huge % of grade and is super easy. Tests are predictable. She ends lecture like 30 mins early everyday. Highly recommend if you want an easy class and you prioritize doing well over learning the material.
Rogers does not make it clear what she expects of you. Especially on the tests and quizzes. There were so many quizzes that I failed because it was one line on a lecture of 30 slides the answer was from. Also she doesn't provide the reference sheet ahead of time and honestly does not make sense why not. Do not recommend.
Rogers is awful at holding down a classroom. Definitely takes favorites. Constantly condescending, and very hostile. She rarely actually answers questions, most of the time she just dodges them, and then gets angry when students are confused. Sometimes outside of class she can be helpful but you have to be very careful how you approach her.
There is a lot of content in each lecture and it's tough to keep up. Class time is often used to work through problems similar to homework and exam questions. Multiple-choice conceptual questions are also discussed in class and often re-used on the weekly quizzes or midterms. Not the best teacher, but excellent at discussing problems/solutions.
Prof Rogers is terrible. Makes fairly simple content extremely difficult and is terrible at explaining things intuitively. She's extremely condescending and doesn't care about having her students succeed . I got an A in gen chem and this class was nearly impossible. Definitely one of the worst professors at Vandy.
Ignore these reviews. She speaks clearly and precisely, doesnt mind answering questions or going over old material, no matter how dumb the question is. Her tests are very fairly written, accurately accessing content from class and homework. Shes the sweetest lady ever, I want her as my mom. Shes very calm, and shes always willing to help out!
I had Prof Rogers for Material Science, and had a nice time in her class. I think she does a solid job explaining the material and the homework never got out of hand. Likes to do Top Hot questions in class so you need to show up. She can be intimidating to approach but isn't mean to her students.
Rogers might actually be the worst professor I've ever had. Her lectures made zero sense and it was really hard to tell what in the lectures we actually needed to know. She is also extremely unhelpful in office hours and often can't even answer my questions. I wouldn't have even shown up to class if she didn't use Top Hat so much.
Rogers was ok for Material Science. The course itself is kinda boring but she doesn't try to make it interesting or engage her students--most people did other homework during lectures. There is only one homework assignment per week, three tests, and a final. The tests weren't too difficult as long as you know the material. Not difficult to do well.
This class was extremely difficult which is why I am giving her a 3 for the rating. If she expects this much from her students she should have said so in the beginning and she should have more practice material prepared. In terms of lectures, I think Professor Rogers is great. She really explains the material clearly and defines each step.
GET OUT. IF YOU TAKE HER YOU'LL HAVE A HORRIBLE SEMESTER. BY AND FAR WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE HAD
Rogers was a pretty good professor- cpp is a tough class but she explained things well if you asked her directly. I didn't get a lot out of lectures and in class stuff but she was helpful during office hours
She's not even a chemical engineer apparently. Her classes are very disorganized and she's extremely unavailable to her students. There have been so many instances where she made a mistake but would rather send her students on a goose chase than just fix and upload a new one to brightspace.
Professor Rogers can sound cold and sarcastic whilst teaching and in office hours. She does not seem particularly caring towards the students. The textbook material and its examples are much more important than the lecture material as the lectures are basically Rogers showing equations.
Terrible professor. Unwilling to work with her students *at best*. Thankfully she's been relegated to labs, however, the apparent lack of oversight led to massive disparities in lab quality between sections. I would avoid anything spearheaded by her if given the opportunity, as she seems utterly uncaring and unwilling to put in any work herself.
Do not take. Very unwilling to help you outside of class.
I certainly wasn't a fan from the start, but Dr. Rogers teaches content well and her lectures are well formatted. While she can easily come off as harsh to students, she isn't trying to, and being nice to her goes a long way. If you have a choice for CPP, this is certainly the better choice. Gives LOTS of partial credit on exams.
I couldn't tell you a thing about Dr. Rogers' personal life, and she doesn't know anything about me other than my name. But all things considered, she had a very clear, fair grading policy (with generous extra credit); her exams covered exactly what was mentioned in lecture and on homework problems, so there weren't any surprises. Fair class.
Somehow Prof. Rogers has managed to make MSE1500L the hardest class I've taken at this school. Ridiculous grader - enforces a personal style guideline (which she conveniently NEVER provides in writing) with fascist intent. Don't be surprised if you regularly get 70-80% on reports that are completely correct but don't follow her format preference...
Not sure why this lab/Rogers gets so much hate but I loved MSE 1500 Lab. I learned a ton about Excel, had a knowledgeable TA, and Prof Rogers responded to my emails almost instantly. Beware, some lab reports took like 10-15 hours, but you have 2 weeks to do them. The classroom sessions also helped solidify calculations/equations from the lecture.
This was my favorite class this semester, and also the most fair class I think I've had. The tests were very straightforward with no trick questions intended to make you crumble; if you can do the homework you can do the test. I was also pleasantly surprised by how quickly Prof. Rogers replied to emails; she always helped out when I needed it!
Took both MSE 1500L and MSE 2205 with Prof Rogers with identical experiences. Lab reports take 10-12 hours, most of which is busy work. Reports are so convoluted that TAs must do constant Q&A on the class page. Rarely grants extensions & condescending to students. The big takeaway is how to fudge data and write excel formulas. Avoid if possible!
You dedicate 10-15 hours of work for a weekly report and consistently get 10-15 points off for formatting because they want you to. Taking this lab will genuinely hurt your grades in other classes with how much time it demands. I have never met Ms. Rogers but she is very hostile when replying to emails and absurdly unempathetic. Avoid at all costs.
While getting an 'A' isn't impossible, the labs for MSE 2205 made me question my major. The first few labs are very time consuming, easily taking around a day to complete from start to finish. Do not procrastinate and never skip lab.
Not the best lecturer nor the kindest professor, but she does make concepts clear and gives guides on solving problems. She sometimes makes silly mistakes (like simply identifying the limiting reagent) when solving examples, but you don't have any other choice for ChBE 2100, so just go to lectures, do homework and you'll do fine.
For CPP you really don't have a choice, but she's not that bad. She will teach you what you need to know, but it's boring. She also makes a lot of mistakes in her work in class. At the end of the day if you go to class and do all the homework you will get an A.
This is by far the heaviest 1-credit-hour class I have taken so far at Vanderbilt as a Junior. Although the class is mandatory, it has not been optimized and the lab reports are tedious for those unfamiliar with excel projects. If professor Rogers grades your assignment rather than the TA, you should expect no lenience in grading.
Really Harsh Professor. Your grade doesn't depend at all on how well you do your experiments, or whether your analysis makes sense, but depends entirely on whether you follow her FORMAT in writing your lab report. You MUST follow his guidline for the lab report, if not, your scores will be really bad.
Please ignore these comments. I took her class and was honestly the best class I'm taking this semester. Her midterms are the most straight forward midterms I have ever taken. She is so sweet too, and is willing to help outside office hours. Do not regret taking her. Plus, 35% of the grade is just homework and participation, which are easy 100s.
Not good. Subtle rude remarks when answering questions regarding confusing and unclear labs. Lab reports will be very vague in terms of what to do but will be graded harshly on the smallest of things that were unclear in the assignment. Do not take if possible.
Beware of lab reports. She will not answer any of your questions, and is rude in her responses. MSE1500L is just a 1 credit lab course, yet takes up 70% of my school problems and 70% of my time here at Vanderbilt. She is unclear in many ways leaving students constantly in the dark. Good luck.
The worst professor I've ever meet at Vanderbilt. The grading is very very harsh. Do not feel surprise if you take 8 hours to do the lab report and still got 50/60 or even worse(if you do not follow her formats, do not feel surprise if you can only get 20/60). If you can avoid this class, do not take it.
MSE 1500 itself is a fairly easy course. Most straight forward exams I have ever had for a course that strongly mimic the homework problems. There is a lot of content, and the lectures feel extremely overwhelming. You must also attend every day for Top Hat participation. The lab is not great and reports are tedious 5-hour work.
She lectures way too fast and has too much information on slides. I end up spending the whole class trying to keep up on writing things down. If you don't have an iPad, it's more difficult. Things are not explained well and seem unconnected. I had to go through the textbook to piece things together. Considering this, the tests were reasonably easy.
Prof. Rogers has a lot of fluff in her lectures and is extremely unaccommodating for basically any make up assignment, test or absence. On the other hand she is very accessible and tests are very reasonable.
Took Rogers for her Elective and CHBE 2100. I think her rating is low from Material Science, because she is great for the ChemE classes. Highly recommend.
Dr. Rogers often fails to deliver clear lectures and regularly makes simple errors that students must correct. After falling ill, she forced me to make up the exam at 7 am the following morning, or receive a 0. I was unable to take the exam because I was still sick and received a 0. The class is easy, she is just horrible, avoid her at all costs.
Very straightforward rubric with straightforward exams and homework. The lectures taught me pretty much everything I needed to know to do the homework and perform well on my exams. Overall great professor and great class, the structure of the course worked well with me!
This class is very straightforward. The tests are all problems from lecture slides or homework, so if you understand those you're chillin'. The labs do take forever, but the lab sessions are low-stress and kinda fun! I am glad I took this over chem. She is sweet, answers emails fast, and is very accessible outside of class.
she is extremely strict with deadlines and extensions, denies accommodations straight up.
Tough grader, and she wouldn't admit any mistakes she made. There is NO rubric for the exam, everthing is grade according to her feeling on your work and her impression on you. But there is no way to avoid her, so make sure you do well in other courses to balance your GPA.
The class itself isn't hard, but her lectures were pretty unhelpful. If you asked Dr. Rogers a question she didn't like, she was often unnecessarily rude in her response. Answers to homeworks, exams, and in-class problems were not posted, so you pretty much have to go to class and/or office hours.
One of the rudest professors I've ever had the displeasure to interact with. I always try to be respectful and polite when interacting with professors but every single one interaction I've had with her she's been unnecessarily rude.
Complete L. I'd rather have my boyfriend hit me every day than go to her class because it honestly is pretty much the same but my boyfriend is nicer to look at.
My friends and I have missed 4 quizzes so far because they're set to no notifications and due at a very strange and confusing time of day that's easy to miss. Don't take her if you can. Purposefully sabotages your grades.
Steve rogers is such a bad professor Im gonna transfer dawg
DONT TAKE HER FOR MSE LAB!!!! It'll be your deMiSE.
Rogers likes to rail her class's lab grades and make us beg for mercy. I feel much safer with Sean Combs and I'd trust him to teach me material sciences rather than her.
Have you ever had a dream that you're falling and you suddenly jolt up in bed because you hit the ground? This class will do the same with you jolting out of bed because you realized YOU MISSED YOUR 12 PM QUIZ ON A MONDAY THATS WORTH 10%!!!! (Happens every week)
I watched a couple dudes singing hymns, blues and freedom songs during our class. If this is what freedom entails, then put me back in my chains, oh Lord.
I like Professor Rogers but I think she's a little strict with grading. Also, she might be copying and pasting grades and feedback because I once got the same grade and same feedback on a lab report as 4 other people I asked….
Prof Rogers is great! Make sure you go to office hours. I don't know why other people are so mad.
RUN!! Do not take this section!
I was sick and she wouldn't let me make up my lab quiz.
I was in the hospital for a fractured cranium after a car accident and she said too bad so sad you fail lab 4
I went to office hours and asked her for help on the lab report and she was not eager to help me at all.
She's a nice person but I just don't like her.
Dont take her please. She is so bad
She complained her students grades on the exam were too high so she made the second one harder.
毛主席不是为这个而死的
The lab is just an excel and word formatting simulator. Lab reports are practically unrelated to the actual course material. Most busy work I've ever had in college.
This woman is the worst professor I have ever had. She gives terrible lectures that cover nothing related to the test and then whines when people ask questions or come to office hours. The crazy thing is the course material isn't even that bad, prof Rogers is just horrific. If you didn't completely fail chemistry I would advise to take chem 2.
Such is life.
Class was somewhat interesting; she was awful to deal with. Was angry in class, adverse to questions, slides weren't helpful for tests, 10-15 pt. test questions w/ limited partial credit, and passive aggressive in emails. Lab was light but reports were entirely on Word skills. Dreading taking her again. Easy to pass, gotta work for an A.
Most people complain about this class but it is really not bad if you make an effort. If you pay attention during class and GO TO OFFICE HOURS, you will do well. Prof Rogers is very kind and wants to help her students. I learned so much during office hours. She gives lots of partial credit on exams and they are similar to HW. Take Prof Rogers.
Made what could have been a fairly interesting class pretty boring. Lectures consist of her reading slides word for word, sprinkled in with a few TopHat questions graded for participation which is nice. Exams were fairly straightforward with a decent amount of partial credit. Minimal amount of HW.
Yes Professor Rogers can come off as passive aggressive, but I absolutely loved her! Her lectures were easy to follow, and she always graded fairly. She was sometimes difficult to reach outside of class hours. However she was always willing to answer questions during and after class.
It's a hard class and she def does not make it any less difficult. This is my only every rating for a professor which I guess says something. Made me want to drop chemical engineering.
Will laugh at you in office hours.
Extremely unkind and judgmental. If you ask a question or do something she doesn't like, she gets extremely angry. Often made me more confused when I asked questions.
Appears friendly, but very impatient with students, losing her temper or speaking in a patronizing way. Not helpful nor happy when you ask her questions. REFUSES to give an actual answer key for any assignment despite the class being entirely computational. Weekly hw that takes sooo much time. Tests and final very close to hw and class probs tho.
