Hard to handle lecturing when the lecturer has a pitchy voice
Was helpful for some labs, but some lab lectures were basically useless.
People complained, but I loved her! Definitely did not need to go to lab lecture, just make sure to show up if there is a quiz or an assignment due!
Had her for c103 and c127. If you can chose to take someone else do yourself a favor and do it. Her assignments are insanely hard and nothing pertains to the actual experiment you do in lab. Also, her lectures focus heavily on non helpful material that does not matter, and brushes briefly over the things she assigns homework over.
She makes this class so much harder than it should be. Friends that took with a different professor got easy As, but Spencer gives her AIs no standard to grade the same. Her worksheets are hard and points are taken off for every minor detail. Plus, she's very annoying in lecture.
She grades waaaay to difficult. Everyone I know is doing very poorly.
While she is a nice person, professor Spencer takes this class too seriously. It is only two credits and it is more work than my five credit classes. The students who took the same class one semester earlier were not graded nearly as hard as we are, they did not have lab notebook quizzes, and attendance was not mandatory.
I had her for both c103 and c127 she grades way to hard for an entry level class. I tried very hard and its entirely too difficult. Everyone who took this class last semester had a different professor and received good grades but with her teaching the course it feels impossible. If you can take any different professor you should do it.
The class is a total train wreck thanks to her, go with anyone else if you can.
Brigette Spencer is one of the absolute worst professors I have ever encountered. She is not concerned at all with whether or not her students are learning anything, rather she is preoccupied with her superiority complex. I have never heard anyone say anything good about her. Avoid taking C127 with Spencer at all costs.
Brigitte Spencer doesn't really teach the chemical aspects of the labs. Rather, she focuses more on the elementary algebraic equations that need to be solved, such as finding the intersection of two lines. Labs are seemingly not planned extremely well because the work that is required post lab for worksheets or lab reports is not conveyed well.
Avoid at all costs. Terrible.
She is the worst professor I have ever had. She makes this class way harder than a 100 level course should be. Straight A students have Cs and Ds in this class. The rubrics do not give clear instructions on how to get an A on assignments. She goes on rants often about stupid stuff. Top Hat for attendance. She has a bad attitude and is condescending
AWFUL. She makes this class so hard. AI's also grade way too hard. Do not take this class.
Spencer makes this class more difficult than it should be. She refuses for anyone to get an A in this class and is very egotistical when I approached her at office hours. Highly recommend staying away from this professor.
This class was far too difficult for no reason. People who took this class last semester had much better grades, didn't have stupid lab notebook quizzes, didn't have an actual lab practical where their professor expects the class average to be a "C"!!!! . DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH BRIGETTE SPENCER. You will struggle even if you try your best.
I did not like her. She gave too much work and we only had a few days to complete ALL of it. She and her AIs all graded way too hard and never actually told me what I was doing wrong because her grading criteria and directions were always so vague, even the AIs were confused. Her lectures never helped but attendance was mandatory. DO NOT TAKE THIS
Had to do more in this two credit class than in my five credit class, and won't come out with more than a B. In lecture she just writes things on powerpoints that she doesn't post online, so you have to go. She'll mention things in passing one time and then the homework will be basically revolved around the one topic she barely covered.
First things first avoid class with her at all cost I had her two semesters in a row and she is a completely unreasonable professor. We would have 4 different homework to do each week for a 2 CREDIT HOUR class. She is probably the most egotistical person I have ever meet in my entire life and care more about sustaining her power than the students.
There was always a clear disconnect between her and the AIs. She is not flexible or understanding.
class was HARD. only 2 credits, but I put in the most work for this class. caused me so much stress, & i'm a good student. She can b condescending. We asked her what she the average will be on our final, and she said it should go smoothly with the average being a C. no curves. questions on quizzes can b unfair. doesnt teach well. dont recommend
Awful professor. avoid at all costs
Had her two semesters in a row- would not recommend. Lectures are mandatory for participation points however they are useless. Grading criteria is unreasonable and some questions on the midterm and lab notebook quizzes are far-fetched. Good student with good grades and have to put in more work for a TWO CREDIT class than other 4/5 credit classes.
Had her for C103 and C127 and she is the hardest grader on campus. The intro lab class she teaches is unreasonably hard and there is a clear ego problem with her
Unclear, too much for an intro level lab. DIsconnected from her AIs and the AIs werent great either. Very tough grader. Avoid at all costs
Brigitte Spencer is the type of professor who doesn't want you to succeed. She doesn't curve anything, expects the average for every assignment/exam/quiz to be a C, and has a serious ego problem. If you are an A student in C117, you will likely not be an A student in this class with Professor Spencer. Lectures and assignments are a waste of time.
If shes the only professor teaching the semester your trying to take c127 wait to take it later. You will do much better with any other professor, when Brigitte told me she expects most of her students to end up with a C. She disregards previous grade distributions when most students got A's.
Just a terrible professor. She did give a relatively lenient curve at the end, though. I think this was likely because people were complaining to her superiors (Chemistry chair, Dean, etc)
No. No. NO!!!! SOOOO many assignments EVERY WEEK for a TWO CREDIT HOUR class! NOOOOO
I would not recommend this class. The AIs were harsh and had clearly different standards between them on what was acceptable work. The professor herself obviously did not communicate very well with the AIs and judged the work of introductory chemistry students to an unreasonable standard. It took an incredible amount of effort to pass.
CHEM-C127 with Prof. Spencer was the most difficult and time-consuming class I've ever taken at IU. For a two credit hour class, the work load is crazy. She seemed to not be in line with her AI's at all, causing unfair grading. People I knew who had 4.0s lost them because of this INTRO lab - it shouldn't be this tough! AVOID!
Brigitte got mad at the AI's if the average on each assignment was too high and a regrade was needed. Does NOT want her students to succeed obviously. The class required a TON of work for a 2 credit hour class. AI's grading was way too hard for an intro level lab. A very easy A+ turned into a B for many great 4.0 students. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!!
She was horrible to have due to the massive amount of homework and mismatch of material with the AIs. She would post rubrics and tell us to follow the rubric and then when we got our papers back we would lose tons of points as if a different rubric was used to grade. Highly discourage anyone from having her for lab.
I would highly advise not taking this class. Way too much work for a two credit class. Extremely inconsistent in grading and provides no information towards improving. I would give 0 stars if it was even an option. The class is a joke and the amount of homework is ridiculous. STAY AWAY AND DON'T TAKE HER CLASS.
One of the most annoying professors I've ever had. Not helpful whatsoever and she has a voice that will haunt your deepest, darkest nightmares. Prof. Spencer reminds you a the unlikable teacher stereotype from any teen movie.
This has been the most horrific class I have ever taken. I honestly dont know how this woman still teaches in the chemistry department. DO NOT take any chem class that is taught by her you will be majorly disappointed.
Literally the worst professor at IU. She does not tell you what she wants, but also penalizes you for not knowing. When you write your lab notebook, which by the way you have to do entirely by hand, write it verbatim. Shell tell you not to write verbatim, but youll wish you had when the notebook quiz is given. And write literally everything. Bad.
Loves to waste everyone's time failing intro lab. Does NOT want her students to succeed and is extremely egotistical. She has some sort of superiority complex and constantly behaves as though her students are kindergarteners instead of college students. Lecture is completely useless yet mandatory. Assignments are EXTREMELY time consuming. Horrid.
However much you prepare youll never be fully prepared. She has not problem lowering grades and talking about random things during lectures while her voices changes from ear piercing screeches to a some what normal voice. 10/10 would drop my major before ever taking a class with her again.
This is a two credit class that takes 25x the amount of work as the three credit lecture to this class. Has the AI grade unbelievably hard
The worst professor I have had the displeasure of having at my time at IU. She grades unnecessarily hard and often makes the AIs lower scores just so she can have her "bell curve". Unfortunately, due to this being an entry level lab, it is often impossible to avoid having her as a professor. So if you have her, Good Luck Charlie.
The absolute worst. Ridiculously difficult grading by the AI's. Overall a horrible class.
The class is hard for sure. You have to make sure you put in the hours. The reason this intro lab is difficult is to show people that the path for science majors is not easy and by starting off hard, it really weeds people out and helps students decided if this is what they want. I will say that 2 credit hours is ridiculous, it should have been 3.
Changed grades of lab sections based on average of other lab sections. AIs were supposed to grade the same but if the average was too high for a lab report, she would tell them to lower the grade until it fits the average she felt the class needed. Lectures not necessary to attend, waste of time. DO NOT take this prof.
literally got petechiae on my eyelids (low-key bruises) from crying over this class. she'll tell you she doesn't give a certain number of A's but she absolutely does, and asks AIs to lower grades if your class average is too high. class is basically designed for you to fail, and IU's entire chem department is the same.
Biggest oof with this class. She says she's loud and not mean, but honestly she's both loud and mean. Has an obnoxious voice (makes me want to throw my laptop at a wall) and she's a kinda condescending. I don't recommend this teacher.
Professor Spencer is the worst. She does not care about her students success and grades to fail. She will go out of her way to make sure you are 100x more stressed than you already are. The amount of work she gives is overwhelming, and all for 2 CREDITS. She does not promote success, just failure. NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS.
Absolutely awful. Do not take this class with her!! Extremely unfair amount of work for a 2 credit class. She doesnt care about her students and can be very rude and degrading. She only cares about catching and preventing cheating and not if her students are actually learning the information. STAY AWAY!!
Extremely unfair. Takes the class way too serious for a 2 credit course. Does not care about students grades and has her ego through the roof. Not to mention the fact that her lectures makes my ears want to bleed. Was NOT understanding WHAT SO EVER under the circumstances of COVID-19 and the difficulties that came with taking the course online.
This class, being worth two credits, gave me two to three times as much work as every other class I took. I would never take this class with Brigitte again because she turned what was a two credit class into a 10 credit class amount of work. 0/10 stars.
There are not enough words in the English language to describe my dislike for Professor Spencer. There is no reason that a 2 credit hour class should be as much work as she makes it. The grading is unfair and the entire class is busy work. She is so focused on making sure people dont cheat that she disregards student success and our concerns.
The people rating her 1s have reasons. We put in tremendous amount of effort to get to where we are. if someone thinks for a SECOND its due to not putting in work needs a reality check. she purposely tanks your GPA, theres no argument on that. If you want to have a decent college experience, avoid this class at all cost. she will ruin it for u
Worst professor Ive ever had. Its a 2 credit hour class but theres enough work for it to be 5 credit hours. All of the homework is just busy work she really doesnt teach you anything. She has a horrible screeching voice and she screams when she talks. She also is very rude and has a big ego.
Going into this class I was a chemistry major with a 4.0 GPA. Due too this class being a basic requirement I would have expected IU to choose a professor that doesn't grade to a curve but rather through the merit of the student's work. However, the opposite was true for professor Spencer, and I would highly recommen trying to find another professor
One of the worst classes Ive taken but shes an okay teacher.
This was absolutely the most frustrating class I've ever taken. There's so much conflicting information among AI that even following directions perfectly will get you a B at best, because they use a DIFFERENT RUBRIC to grade. That was the case for me, anyways. Unless you're willing to confront your AI about every little thing they mark off, avoid.
I literally had zero interaction with Prof. Spencer. She literally had all our AIs grade our work and answer our emails. She actually got angry when you emailed her. I felt like I had to teach myself the calculations and do extra hours of research when it came to report writing because I had no clue what the purpose of some labs even were.
I was terrified for this class after reading Professor Spencer's reviews. However, it turned out to be not bad at all! You get two attempts for all of the online labs. Lab reports were a little tough. Professor Spencer and AI were easily accessible and always willing to help in office hours and by email. If you put in the work, you'll be be fine!
I was nervous to take C127 after reading all the reviews but the class itself isn't bad. I never really interacted with the professor. AI's had different rubrics and they weren't very consistent. You got two tries each lab and two lab reports total which were the main grades. Lots of work for a 2 credit class but doable.
Hated her.
God awful. Has an ego issue and is extremely condescending. Assigns too much work for a 2 credit class.
Has some absurd grading system that is completely subjective. Continuously in the dark about what is even happening. major disconnect between her, her students, and her AIs even.
She has the most confusing gradeing system that sounds like bundles you'd get from an insurance company. Makes you pay for pointless external websites for lab. Does not explain her rubrics or expectations for assignments well. I know labs are bad but this is the worst class ive taken so far and she does not listen to students concerns.
Literally the worst professor I have ever had. The class is fine, but she grades by grade bundles and if you miss literally one thing you're screwed and can't get an A. She makes it impossible to succeed and does not care at all if you do.
This class is displayed as a 2 credit hour class, but Professor Spencer instructs this class like it's a 3 credit hour class. She likes to make the course more difficult than a general chemistry lab has to be.
this class absolutely sucks. it's a shame that it's required for stem majors. she makes no sense whatsoever. her grading system is not even a real grading system and only provides stress. she as well as her ais are unhelpful because as mentioned before her grading system isn't real. this class is only two credits but has work as though it is 5!
Worst class I have taken and the feeling is mutual by majority of students. Grading system is so unclear, I have absolutely no clue if I am succeeding or failing in this class. An average about 4 assignments a week that are extremely time consuming, so I would prepare to spend a good chunk of your time working for this 2 credit class.
she takes her 100-level, 2-credit lab class wayyy too seriously and complicates things for no good reason
Will never email you back unless you follow up 20 times. The AI's grading is not according to the syllabus.
Shes ok. Never even interacted with her, only with my ai. post/pre labs can sometimes be tough but just go to ai office hrs and theyll help. one thing tho is that shes makes rash decision. she was upset not enough ppl went to lecture so she stopped posting the recordings. lecture is not required on the syllabus. so who cares if ppl dont go. idk
She made a relatively simple class more difficult than necessary. Lectures were not mandatory and she posted the video online, however attendance was poor so she stopped posting the videos. The post labs and lap reports were difficult because her lectures do not contain very useful information. Everything is VAGUE
Worst teacher I've ever had and it's not even close. I don't even understand how she still has a job. Has an incredibly weird grading system that makes it even harder to get a good grade. Has an awful attitude. The class is so so much work. My sincere apologies go out to whoever has to take this class.
Never had any teacher that made me want to leave a review. Class is very unorganized. We are given conflicting information for everything. AIs have no idea what is going on and teach makes them do everything also. Grading system makes zero sense. This class should not be worth 2 credit hours. It is more work than the C117 lecture class.
The class was specification grading (satisfactory/unsatisfactory) with grade bundles. The AI's were not consistent in their grading. The lectures were pointless at best. Some of the assignments took forever. Lab PDF instructions were unclear and confusing, even to AI's at times. 10/10 do NOT recommend. If you don't have to take it, please DON'T.
Class is way too much work for 2 credits and took more time during the week than the lecture class. Most information that is given to students is unclear. Class is very unorganized. Students are pretty much left to themselves to figure everything out.
By far one of the worst instructors I've ever had. She utilizes a truly bizarre grading system in which getting slightly below "Satisfactory" on a 10 point assignment could drop you from an A to a C, and the other additional work you did while trying to get an A is now worthless, you're on par with the people who didn't do that work at all.
Very unorganized class, the bundle/spec grading is set up awfully. AI's often didn't even know what was happening because of a severe lack of communication. Lectures were vague at best, almost never helpful and I stopped going. Definitely avoid if you can. Way too much work for 2 credits, absolutely ridiculous. Professor also has a bad attitude.
AVOID this class at all costs. The worst part of this class is the grading system because if you get an "unsatisfactory" grade, then you automatically drop a letter grade in the class. The grading system does not reflect the time and effort students put into their work. If you don't have to take this class, don't take it.
This class is a bee sting annoying pain. The grading scale can be merely explained as a simple game. The class is graded by specification, meaning there are grade bundles and work required to achieve that grade. Yet one assignment can knock you from one to the next. Grades very tough, and many differences between graders. Just an overall tuff pain.
This was harder and more stressful than any class I have ever taken. The content itself was not difficult but the grading, assignments, and time put in was excessive. Showing up to class was such a hassle. I ended with an A+ but I should have also ended with a therapy session from the emotion distress.
Just to be clear- I'm sure she is a great person, but this class was unnecessarily difficult. The spec-grading system is good in theory, but, in reality, it was extremely difficult to get an A because of the lab reports needing to be excellent (aka, nearly 100% perfect). My AI was also a slow & hard grader, so that was a factor that I struggled w/
Prof. Spencer's class is the MOST unclear class I've taken. This semester she created Grade Bundles in which if you do EVERYTHING perfectly and mess up on one assignment and run out of tokens you get dunked from an A to a C. There is a disconnect from her and the lab AI's so grading is spread differently from AI to AI so hope you get someone good.
I was scared for this course after reading the reviews, but its not too bad. Content isnt overly difficult, but it is a lot of work for 2 credits. Grading scheme is definitely weird but it also benefited many students. AIs and Professor Spencer were always helpful and available during office hours.
Hated the class. Was 1 point from an A+ Spencer created the A- from the complaints and made it seem as if it was a favor, originally would have got a B+ from 1 point. AI was super nice and helpful. Spencer sucked!!
professor spencer is one of the worst ive had. this 2 credit class was way more work than any of my 3/4 credit hour courses. spencer is unclear in her lab handouts, there is a disconnect between her and the AIs, and she uses an awful grading scheme. if you mess up on one assignment, you will automatically drop from an A to a B.
Brigitte's implementation of a bundle grading system overall made it harder for students to achieve the grades they wanted, as even missing one random assignment could drop you one letter grade. The lectures themselves are not useful at all, everything that she talks about is in lab procedures. The labs themselves were not that bad due to the AIs.
made me question being a woman in stem. grading policy is questionable at best. one assignment can make or break you. extremely vague and wildly unclear grading criteria. hard to know where you stand in class throughout semester. the AI you get basically determines your grade and nothing is consistent. Say your prayers. Best of luck besties.
The bundling system that she does is ridiculous, lectures are worthless, and this class relies too heavily on grad students. I feel terrible for the AI's that have to endure a semester of this.
As others have said, your AI will make it or break it for you. I lucked out mine was great. I only rated her a 2 instead of 1 because I ended up w/ an A+ only after she made several bundle revisions. Excessive amount of work for 2 credits; more than my 4 credit class. Pre/Post lab, lab, lab report, extra stuff she adds... makes for a ton of work.
If you can avoid this class, do so. I know I'm a smart person; I have had a 4.0 all my life. I got an A in this class, but it was by far the worst thing I've ever done. A 2 credit class felt like a 4 credit class. The AIs were hilariously inconsistent, and 1 bad grade on ANY assignment can tank you. You have to be on your A game 100% of the time.
I never enjoyed this class, the grading is not clear or fair.
The grading for this course is horrible and each AI tends to grade your work differently. You definitely have to take CHEM-C 117 in order to understand what to do with this course because she expects you to know without teaching you. The lectures are recorded so you don't have to go to them but missing a lab is a big deal. A lot of people drop this
Class wasnt that hard. Went to my ai office hrs every week and go a's on everything. Grading scale is okay, i mean its not hard to get an A if u put in work, can be confusing tho. Class is full of freshman who only complain tbh.
Prof Spencer is very kind. However, that doesn't make her a good teacher nor does it justify the extreme carelessness with which this class was run. I could not understand my AI (due to incredibly thick accent, plus masks), and all attempts to meet through Zoom were very rushed and often unhelpful. Good luck and godspeed my queens in stem :(
This class is only 2 credit but takes up my entire week. The fact that my grades depend on my AI rather than my professor is something I do not understand. The assignments are also not clear on what the minimum requirements are to get a good grade, so you can work on a paper for days and still only get a 6/10 from your AI.
Avoid like the plague. She teaches a 50-minute lecture each week, but the AIs have all the power in grading and carrying out the lab procedures. The grading scheme has been altered since previous reviews on this course, but it is still difficult and weird. This class takes up so much time and it really shouldn't as a 2 credit course.
When I first read Professor Spencer's reviews for this class, I was terrified. Honestly, it's not that bad. The main issue is that there is way too much work just for a two credit class. If you have a good AI, then you will do just fine in the class. The big thing is to go to lab, attend lecture, and office hours if you need help.
This class was by no means easy, but after seeing the other reviews, I was compelled to say that the class was not as bad as most of these reviews claim. As long as you read the labs before-hand (which is, most of the time, more work than performing the actual lab) and go to the lectures, you'll be fine.
I took C127 lab with her. The lectures aren't mandatory. LabFlow, where you do pre/post labs, is kind of difficult, the questions aren't always clear and sometimes the automatic grading on it is off. Overall this course requires a lot of work, but depending on your AI it can be manageable.
Lecture attendance was optional but helpful when doing the post-lab and actual lab. Honestly, just do the work required and you will get a good grade. The only hard lab was the first lab since you don't really know what to do but most times people will help you in the groupme so join that.
AIs are incredibly inconsistent with each other and even with themselves at times. If you take the 8 AM lecture, be prepared for some late starts. She's nice and wants to help, but lectures aren't very concise and she constantly seems slightly unprepared. I felt like I learned nearly nothing in this course.
In this course your Ai grades everything and are the most helpful ones to go to when you have any questions. Office hours are a must if you ever need help understanding concepts. Yes, this course is a lot just for it to be 2 credits, it was even way more than C117. You need to be willing to work for your grade and ask questions.
Lots of work but is definitely doable with a good mindset.
Professor Spencer is terrible.
Just dont.
When I asked for help or clarification she seemed annoyed and didn't give clear answers. The lectures seem pointless and unorganized. Post labs are the main struggle, because it's hard to understand the concepts and deeper meanings without better instruction. But, if you have a good AI for your lab section, you will be fine.
If you have a good AI, you'll be fine but prof spencer's lectures are entirely useless. haven't needed them once all semester yet attendance is still mandatory.
Terrible professor. Lab lectures were mandatory and completely useless. Did not explain how to do the post labs, so all of them ended up taking hours to complete while you figure out how to do everything on your own. If you have a good TA, you'll be fine but good luck if not. Waste of my tuition.
I think that sometimes she can be harsh, but overall she's a pretty decent professor. The worst part of this class was the geotracking top hat attendance.
The lectures for C127 were pointless and weren't helpful to the labs we were learning. Attendance was mandatory and taken by a geotracker on TopHat. However, I only attended like 6/15 lectures and was fine. You need to have a good AI for lab otherwise you wont know what to do and the AI's in office hours have no idea what theyre doing.
Lectures were pointless, boring and long. I don't find the need in having a lecture for this lab. Her voice makes me wanna listen to music. The ai's are not helpful. Not a difficult class however.
Get ready for busy work upon more busy work. Also make sure you know how to use excel since all of the experiments require it and provide 0 explanation on how to do things. This class genuinely makes me more miserable then C117. Also her lectures are beyond useless and provide no real value, yet she requires attendance. Pray you get a good TA.
She genuinely forces every single student to go to lecture and often takes attendance on tophat one minute after class has started. I had her 8 am section and a lot of people roll in late, understandable - people live across campus and dont want to wake up at 6 for a useless lecture that teaches you nothing and puts you back to sleep.
Unnecessary lectures as she doesn't actually grade any of the work, she just talks about the lab which you could just read about in the pre-lab work at home. Can be rude and makes you feel dumb for even asking a simple question. If you have a chill AI, you're in luck because they grade everything. Only worth 2 credits for the amount of work you do.
She can be pretty nasty/rude at times. Your grade entirely depends on your AI. I was lucky and my AI was a very easy grader.I know others were not. Wants you to use inscribe but 95% of the time she just responds go to office hours, defeating the entire point of the program. She would get mad at side convos in class and pause until no more talking.
Terrible professor. Lecture attendance is 5% of the grade. If they weren't worth anything no one would show up. (I had 5/13 and got an A). Completely useless. Grade in class however is completely based on your AI (mine was AMAZING), so don't worry too much about her bad rating she doesn't actually do much its mostly the lab specific AI or head AI.
Lectures are mandatory and are usually early in the morning, but what she teaches is usually useless as all the information can be found online. She also discusses the next week's lab which most students will forget about by the time it comes around. Actual labs were fine, its just her lectures were not good.
Professor Spencer is not very nice and is very boring. The lectures are early in the morning and not even worth listening to. The post-labs are graded very hard and they just throw you in the water and make you do an unnecessary amount of work. Do not recommend.
Prof Spencer is lowkey mean and makes you scared to ask questions. Don't worry about her terrible rating, you won't deal with her much just get to lecture and do attendance. Don't even listen to the lab lecture it's not worth ur time just do other work. Your grade will depend entirely on your AI, pray you get a good one (most are super chill tho).
She was incredibly rude the one time I asked her a simple question. The class is extremely easy, but she will do everything she can to make the class feel harder than it is. She gets mad and will have outbursts in class if attendance is too low or someone leaves during the lecture. I have never had a professor this terrible in my 3 years of college
Lecture is early morning and completely useless. Could send everything in a short email. She's boring and acts like common sense material is groundbreaking information. Attendance is required, but if you show up even 5 minutes late, you won't get credit. If you have the opportunity to take this class with anyone else, do it.
Extremely easy class but awful professor and AI. Lectures are useless but attendance is required. Lab AI doesn't know how to do anything, gives us the wrong answers, and mislabels bottles in lab; the only helpful person was the UTIN. The rubrics for the lab report contradict each other and assignments on Canvas contradict what she says in lecture.
Attendance is mandatory and is maybe the least useful thing ever, most people leave after attendance is taken. First lecture I was present but mistook the attendance for the top hat join code. When I went to tell her after she said that she would not mark me present as I missed the tophat. Unbelievable amount of work for a 2 credit class. Terrible.
The class itself isn't super hard, but your grade is entirely dependent on your AI. Spencer is honestly pretty rude and has a major ego problem, but just put in headphones during her lectures - you won't miss anything useful.
I genuinely feel ill any time I even think about this class. Incredibly stressful for an introductory 2 credit course. The lab manuals are extremely convoluted and make 0 sense, and the homework costs like $50 to access. I'm not sure if any of this is really Spencer's fault but you don't really ever talk to her (she was nice the one time I did).
This class isn't quite as bad as people make it out to seem. Your grade is highly dependent on your lab ai and how strict of a grader they are. My biggest complaint is that this class involves WAY too much work for a 2 credit class. Lecture is extremely borning and the labs often seem pointless. The professor often seems annoyed when lecturing.
She is so disrespectful to students and very unhelpful for any questions you may have. She's literally got mad at our class for people going to the bathroom and having their computers out, like what? The lecture is useless anyway, as all the information needed is in the lab protocol and she just repeats the information straight from the protocol.
The teacher frequently displays rude and dismissive behavior toward students, particularly during morning classes. Students have reported that the teacher often appears irritated or impatient, which creates a tense and uncomfortable classroom environment. This behavior negatively affects students' confidence and willingness to participate.
Maybe the worst prof I've ever had? She was incredibly rude and yelled at students multiple times for having computers out just to take notes? Extremely condescending every day. AI is mainly in charge of grading and if you luck out it will be fine as long as you do every assignment. Attendance is "necessary" but it won't matter if you don't go.
This professor does not know how to format post lab assignments and makes them the most meticulous assignment that take hours to do. The lecture is required even though there is no educational benefit to them and they do not help in any way shape or form with the lab. The only redeemable part of this class was my AI who was willing to help.
Avoid this professor at all costs.HAND WRITE EVERY SINGLE WORD for lab procedure when can just print it out.tiny misunderstanding with the formal lab report, but she insisted on reporting it to the school. dropped from A+ to C+, Worst studying experience and worst professor I've ever met and worst people alive i've met too.
Really rude to students, lectures are bad, they are required, but completely unhelpful, and lab handouts make zero sense. There was one lecture in particular where she was yelling at everyone about being inconsiderate and how people are rude, using their computers, and missing class. But she was actually just yelling at the ones that showed up.
Labs were not too difficult but they involved a lot of unnecessary work which made them take longer than they should have. Lectures are unhelpful and not necessary to understand the lab.
She just reads off the slides and explains what the next lab is going to be about, yet it is also explained online. 127 lectures are completely pointless, yet attendance is mandatory. Also got mad at some people for having laptops out during lecture one time (??)
I don't understand why the rating is so low. Dr. Spencer is a caring Professor who wants to help students and lectures were alright. Only thing is, the lectures were super early in the morning and there was a TopHat for attendance.
Do NOT take this class with her unless you have to, this class is so useless. She will take attendance right when class starts and won't count you present even if you were 2 minutes late. She is probably the worst professor I've ever had. My AI Deborah was AMAZING though; she was the reason I did good in this class.
This class was so useless. It would've been better with a horse as the prof. The slideshows she shows are so unnecessary and do not help anyone understand the labs any better. Be cautious when using AI throughout this course as well. If you don't have to take her, DON'T! I loved my AI, though, if you have a chance to choose, pick Deborah!
Be prepared...her mood depends on the crispiness of her Dr.Pepper that morning. Her lectures are so boring that you will become a master at looking busy when you're not even paying attention. Her attitude when corrected is like a kindergartner before their nap. But hey, Deborah is the AI for you. If you get her, you're lucky.
Professor Spencer, and the class in general, are just super annoying. There is no reason to have a lecture to explain the lab if all the information is in the procedure. She spends more time slurping down her Diet Dr.Pepper and talking about her kids than explaining anything useful. The lab UTIN numerous times told me incorrect information.
CHEM-C 127 was not an extremely difficult course. The workload is on the heavier side (mainly Post Lab assignments). Professor Spencer was hostile at times, and her weekly, attendance-mandatory lectures were pointless. I rarely interacted with Professor Spencer, but when I did, it was never pleasant. If you are a good student, you will do fine.
Not nearly as bad as people make her out to be, but was still sometimes a bit passive-aggressive or dry. Seemed to actually care about the students and wanted to see them succeed, did not prep very well for labs but at least the lectures were informative. If you stay on top of your work, anyone can get an A or B here
Lectures are completely useless, the professor poorly and vaguely explains the lab procedure for next week and didn't even give useful advice for our first lab report. Typos in every online document or assignment which are years old and would be easy to fix. I also don't know what she does besides lectures, TAs do everything from what I can tell.
This is by far the worst class I have taken at IU. Unnecessarily hard. Took Bio lab at the same time and it was a breeze in comparison. There is no room for mistakes in this course. Two major reports you need to complete too. So much busy work. Post labs were the end of me. 0/10
Actually the worst lectures of any class in the history of education. Don't waste your time listening to this nonsense. Do NOT miss lecture because it is worth way too much of your grade. Pray that you have a good AI for your lab otherwise it's genuinely over. Don't talk to prof. Spencer it's not worth it.
The lecture is pointless and is info you will read either way. Tedious labs and busy work outside of class. Too much time spent outside of class for a 2-credit class. Your AI is extremely important and could screw you over, but most are nice and willing to help. Spencer is a nice woman for the most part and will help if you have any questions.
The labs are always extremely frustrating they are often difficult to understand without having a lot of help from your TA. They never went smooth there was always some issue. There are 5 “skills assignments” which is busy work that takes sometimes up to three hours.
The class itself was fairly easy, and it was possible to earn a good grade, however, the labs were stressful and time-consuming. The professor often came across as unapproachable and condescending, which made the experience less enjoyable despite manageable coursework.
