Shes a good professor, but can be demanding of certain things, full of herself, and not very understanding of absences.
I thought she was a good teacher. Her pronunciations aren't that bad, she's not one of those that you can't understand. I think she did a good job and was pretty easy. She does expect you to be there in class and participate. She grades a lot on participation.
Good teacher, does have accent but that really isn't a factor in anything. Very intelligent lady, knows her stuff. Full of ideas, and an enjoyable class overall. Recommended.
She is a great professor. Prepares you very well for the department exam. Does teach alot from the book but it isn't bad. She grades off a point system and it makes writing papers so much easier. She is really funny and an extremly nice lady! Would reccomend her to anyone. EASY A!!!
she is horrible
Dr. Roy is a very nice professor and is really exciting aout teaching. She has a passion for what she does and her classes are not boring at all. We have awesome dicussions if you read the stories. Her class is fun and has a weekly quiz about the stories that we read. I highly reccomend her!!! Awesome teacher!!!
Dr. Roy is very friendly and very smart. This class was an easy A. She's super funny. I recomend getting on her good side. Uses the book a lot. Very lax on due dates, if you talk to her.
Very easy class. HOWEVER, beware that she is a very vocal feminist. She's nice, but puts stipulations on classwork such as "This presentation can be about anything from the 16th and 17th centuries. But not a man." That said, she's a good teacher and the class is an easy A if you put in any effort at all.
She is a very good instructor, At first she seems difficult because she uses sarcastic humor. Do the readings, journals(very easy), and attend class always. She really wants you to do well, but is not afraid to give you the grade deserved.
Dr. Roy is an okay teacher. I enjoyed her class, but felt like she was rude if I asked her questions during her office hours. Does a point system, so no A or B papers which is easy. Learned a lot from her class, but she called me Ashley all semester. My name is Courtney.
very enthusiastic teacher. really pretty and a vocal feminist. has a dry sense of humor but really nice and helpful. lotsa reading. 3 group presentations, 2 tests, and 1 final research. the 2 tests are tough, but she gives you the exact questions a week before the test. the hardest part of the class was the 10 page research paper.
She's hard to understand and not really interesting. Have to catch her on a good day to get help with papers and suggestions. The quizzes and papers are pretty easy and she will tell what you did wrong.
She was easy. Every paper you have to write just adds additional elements. So, there are no suprises. The presentations are a few minutes and as long as you hit the key points you will get a perfect score. quizes are on stories that you read and discussed in class. The final paper is long, but nothing hard.
Brinda was my Eng teacher for Comp I. She is funny, witty and insightful, but also uncaring and mean as all hell. She will tear your papers to shreds like you're supposed to be in Comp II Honors. She doesn't know your name and doesn't care to either. What I thought would be an easy class turned out to be pretty scary, I thought I might not pass!!
Had this chick for Eng 2. NO LAPTOPS ALLOWED!!! Had a paper due and asked the Learning Lab to help me make sure I was on target with my objectives. 2 different PROFESSORS claimed it to "hit the name on the head". I turned it in only to get 65/100. Why didn't i let her read it prior? because she doesn't do that now... Enjoy her class :)
She was pretty awesome. She took the time to explain things and was always available to email. She was a pretty liberal grader and I did pretty well in her class.
Had her for Comp 1 and loved her, so i took her for World Lit too. Turns out, she's much easier and somewhat more caring in her Comp 1 class. She graded my tests/papers extremely hard. She does have a problem with names, but who cares? My main complaint is that she will find a just a few small things wrong with your work, and rip it apart.
Loved this professor. Found her enthusiasm contagious. Participation counts! Test topics handed out at least a week before test. You choose two from list and write 2 essays. (time yourself-30 min. per essay) No surprises! Final research paper required. She'll work with you; just ask before paper is due! Easy if you come to class and participate.
Absolutely loved her class! I like to write, so the 5 papers we had to do was no big deal. I enjoyed the class discussions over the stories we had to read, as well. She's bad with names at first, but it's almost funny because she's totally aware of it. Just come to class, read the stories she assigns, and do the papers. Simple.
She is entertaining, and doesn't grade too harshly. Even though the subject matter wasn't all that interesting for me, I enjoyed her class.
She has very dry humor. The papers are not hard, she gives you opritunities to correct your papers. She also gives you some time to come in before the paper is due so she can check it and give you some help. Quizes over every short story you read.
Dr. Roy is brilliant. She is passionate about her field and expects the students to care about their own education. She motivated me to outdo myself with each paper. Dr. Roy is the perfect professor for the students that are serious about academic success. Lazy and uninterested students that want to be coddled should find a mediocre professor.
Do not take her World Lit 2 class if you not a full time student. Expects more work than a Full time worker and part time student can do, or at least me. Reading large sections "Up too 100 pages"-Her Words, and writing a full page "Journal", single space, between each class, plus 3 projects and a research paper.
Dr. Roy is the best professor I have ever had. She is engaging and truly cares about her students. Her expectations are clear: that students learn to effectively communicate through writing and speech. She's very interested in hearing each student's voice. If you work hard, see her during office hours, and attend class, you will do well.
Dr. Roy doesn't care about her students, she cares about having a soapbox to preach her own pretentious opinion while rejecting others and talking down to her students. She doesn't do lots of material justice and she's not lenient, while obviously having favorite students. As someone interested in literature this class was a massive disappointment.
She is awesome. She like you to interact and is very helpful. I took her for engl 1302 also.
Mrs. Roy is very hard on grading papers. During scheduled class meeting times designed for reviewing papers, Mrs. Roy meets with a student for 5 minutes and skims over only 1 or 2 paragraphs. Sometimes she differs on what she is looking to grade for a paper. She responds to emails within 2 days and gives everyone a chance to participate in class.
First day of class she said "There are no right or wrong answers in literature". Her attitude and lectures say otherwise. She doesn't respond to emails, and cannot write legibly to save her life. How can one correct an essay, if they can't read her comments? She makes everything so difficult and frustrating. Just avoid...
Roy is a hard paper grader, but shes willing to answer any questions in office hrs. OK on emailing. 2 pwrpt presentations. 3 or 4 papers. and a handful or quizzes on reading material. You do watch Othello movie. She moves quickly in class, don't miss class. Took class @ 7am, and could stay awake. Interesting to hear her perspective on the readings
I took Intro to Lit and it was very tough and fast paced. She is obviously very talented at pulling out themes, symbolism, imagery, etc. from a text but expects you to be able to do the same since Engl 1302 is a pre-req. There wasn't enough time to really understand or discuss the themes to write a good enough paper for her high standards.
The first thing you should know about brinda is that shes a tough grader. you'll have to write 5 essays in her class the last being a 6-8 page research essay. the saving grace in this class is that you can re write two of your essays, not including the research essay. if your not already a strong writer you may have trouble with this class.
She's a very harsh grader. I go to the learning lab to get help from other english professors for essays, and they say I have an A Paper but when I turn it in to Dr. Roy I receive a C. In my last english class I got an A. In this class I am having a much harder time. She is inconsistent with the other professors and expects too much of her students
Professor Roy is really helpful and to the point. She has high expectations for all 5 of the required papers you write in her class and grades accordingly. The good news is she grades really nicely on the Department exam! as long as you read the material you will pass all the quizzes and as long as you follow the paper guidelines you will pass!
Brinda Roy is a good teacher overall, she was clear at explaining all her course material. She also has a list of words you cannot write with though, so you can't use those words on the paper. And Absolutely No Cell Phones!!!
Brinda Roy is a good teacher overall, she was clear at explaining all her course material.
Great teacher overall. She takes attendance and has high expectations but she makes up for it by being always helpful to students. She has very specific guidelines for her papers and is always willing to answer any question, as long as you ask for help. Also she picks out great stories to study from and the discussions were very interesting.
Dr Roy is a great professor. You have to read a lot, she uses 3 book series and she loves you to participate. She's fun, assigns 13 journals for homework and tests are pretty easy multiple choice, but you have to write an essay on each test. She lets you bring in an outline, book, etc and uses blackboard & email a lot. Overall my FAV teacher!
Preaches her opinions. Can't disagree with her or else you get docked points. Comments how much she disagrees with your opinions when she grades your paper. Poor attitude. would not recommend. Take Austin-Mills instead.
Provides little to no explanations on topics. Disagrees with all of your opinions. No possible way to earn extra credit or do corrections. Worst attitude. Definitely would not recommend online or in class.
Pay attention to what she says about the stories you go over-- they help when you do your literary exams. Class sucks though. You have to talk about a massive amount of stories and a lot of journals. Research paper is huge portion of grade so take it seriously. Attendance matters; 50 points added to grade if you have 0 absences.
Basically does nothing but preach her opinion, and if you disagree with her or you're a guy, she'll dock you. Think I'm joking? I did most of the work on a powerpoint and got a D, while the girl did little and got an A.
Gives you 1 page papers basically every night, but if you're on topic and have at least a semi descent grip on what you are talking about you will get credit. As for in class pay attention because what she says will usually be on the tests
Amazing instructor. She makes the students feel at ease and gets everyone to participate. She is hilarious and her lectures are captivating. I really really enjoyed her class. I would definitely take any of her English classes. Highly recommend.
Dr. Roy was a pretty good teacher, but she's tough. You have to work for the grade, and do not ever do what I did. I never read our book. READ YOUR BOOK. FOLLOW HER INSTRUCTIONS and READ HER CLEARLY. If you stay focused, do a lot of research on the arguments and stuff, you will do fine.
I personally didn't care for her online class. When I had questions I'd ask her and she would respond rudely. Make sure you read her syllabus with a fine comb she will tell you to refer back to it. Not a professor that I'll take again. Glad my semester is done!!
You'll have to read the textbooks, especially because you have to write summaries over what you read. The lectures are really enjoyable and sometimes the class would have group discussions. I had a lot of fun in this class, and learned a lot!
I highly recommend her class, very helpful teacher. I took her British Lit. Class and she was amazing, gives feed back, and her classes are hilarious. She really know what she is taking about.
Professor Roy!!!! Folks say she was hard and tough, i absolutely disagree. I was absent a lot and she gave ma an A for participation....(still come to class). I didn't do as well as I wanted to on the three tests but I surprisingly did what she wanted for the essay and she gave me a B for the class.
Dr. Roy was amazing. You can tell she has a real passion for English, and making sure her class really learns something. It is an argument based class, so it is a lot different than the typical acc english class where you write a few papers and you're done. You really have to think critically and I really enjoyed the challenge.
Dr. Roy is an amazing lecturer. I've never felt more engaged or interested in poetry. You have a journal assignment every night, lots of reading, and she is a Comp. teacher so she is a tough grader. But if you read your book, show up, and participate, not only will you do well, you will get so much out of the class. And a new love for literature.
Great
Dr. Roy may be a tough grader, but she is fair. The class is not one you get to sleep through, participation matters a great deal, but her lectures are super interesting. If you put in an effort and show up to class, you will do just fine. She also gives great feedback as to what she wants if you are stuck. The woman loves G.O.T. She rocks!
Journals every assignment. Class participation mandatory or you won't get a good grade. Only 2 test. Group presentation are required. Poetry, British Lit, Lots of reading.
Professor Roy is incredibly energetic and funny, which makes her class easy to follow and fun to attend. You have reading out of the textbook assigned every class, and a journal due every class. Theres 2 tests and a research paper, which are major grades, but as long as the reading is done, her class is a breeze. Love her and would take again!!
Delayed start till 10 am and I have her class at 9 am and she's requiring us to come to her class for 20 min from 10 am to 1020 and she said she wouldn't be able to go over the syllabus but wants to do an icebreaker. Like bruh what....
This class requires a lot of reading every night but it's manageable. She will make you speak and participate in class. I'm not a talker in class so it wasn't my favorite thing. But the tests aren't that bad if you study for them and read the content. Professor Roy is funny and passionate about literature and will make you laugh.
Took Dr. Roy for both Comp II and World Lit (ENGL2342). Though she expects a lot, Dr. Roy in an absolute pleasure and one of the finest professors I've ever had. She really knows her stuff and expects you to bring 110% but she's so good at what she does that feeling is infectious and permeates the class and the semester. Would recommend.
After two years at ACC I can honestly say she is the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. I earned an A, but she is extremely condescending and rude to her students, lectures are uninformative and shallow, she makes everything political. I was a big literature fan, but she ruined it for me. I strongly advise finding another option.
typical I dont have time for this professor. Rude. Smart but EXTREMELY condescending. Not one ounce of her or her class made me want to be better. Constant negative emails obviously aimed at small group that doesn show up. Get over yourself, most of us are here to learn. Avoid at all costs, she knows her stuff but easier classes exist.
Interesting class, never boring! You will work for your grade though.
I took this class online, and the first two assignments were very obscene. I finally withdrew from the class because I think that it is possible to effectively learn English without such vulgar wording. I would highly suggest taking a different professor.
Dr. Roy makes Brit Lit a ton of fun. Every day her lectures really make you think about the material to be read. Get ready to read a LOT and write 1pg long journals for every class though. Her list of words to avoid in papers is intense, but done with the focus to make everyone better writers.
I had this prof for my first online course. I regretted taking the course online at first because the syllabus and course docs on BB seemed like alot. She gave great feedback on the short answer questions and papers, and the abundance of reference docs proved beneficial later. I would recommend her for Comp 1 - DL.
One of my favorite professors! Really cares about teaching her students. Our class is kind of small and that gives her a chance to be more personal with her students. She's fun and knows what she's talking about.
I originally signed up for this class with a different professor and then a week in we got Dr. Brinda Roy. She was such a TOUGH grader!! When she emailed some things back to me, it seemed like she was talking to me as if I were dumb. Would not take her class again!
Really enjoyed Professor Roy's class! Her class is very discussion based and requires a lot of participation which keeps it interesting. Her classes are never boring. There is a lot of reading (which makes sense for a literature class). She can be a bit of a tough grader, especially on essays.
She is very precise with what she wants in papers and I like that, but she is the hardest grader ive ever had. Her classes are discussion-based which is fun. When writing papers you cant even have your friends look at/peer edit them, because its considered plagiarizing. First class I have been in where that is considered a bad thing.
This was a DL class. We still had to participate in Blackboard discussions for points. Dr. Roy is a no nonsense type. She spells things out very clearly and expects compliance. She allows students to turn in rough drafts and points out what is wrong so that you can correct. Shes great with responding! She expects work to be done on time.
I enjoyed Dr Roy, shes funny. She requires participation from all the students which I thought would be hard because im shy but I ended up liking it a lot. I don't like that she takes points off your grade if you're absent. I'm a mom, sometimes things happen and I think as long as were doing the work & passing then it shouldnt matter.
Dr. Roy was a great professor, I actually looked forward to class most days. Lots of reading to do, but I thought it was well worth it. 14 one-paged journals throughout the year, 2 exams (multiple choice over the readings and a written portion which she gives you the prompts before,) and a final paper.
Gives too much feedback and isnt respectful about it. Worst professor you can take in ENGL1301 not recommended.
The worst experience I've ever had at ACC. Do yourself a favor and never take a class from this teacher. Either if you either want an easy credit or you actually care about writing, Dr. Roy will make this class hell for you. The content is also terrible and pretentious.
Just no. No. This teacher is one of the worst out there. She doesn't want you to pass at all. There is a lot of work (she also said the word "a lot" isn't even a real word wtf?) and little time. AVOID HER CLASS AT ALL COST! If my review isn't telling much, just look at everyone else's.
One of the most difficult professors. All course material is politically motivated and if your opinion differs from her, she will take off points. Super strict when grading papers, but barely teaches anything about writing. Nitpicks every little thing, demands perfection, will work you to death every week with multiple discussion boards and quizzes
Professor Roy was unclear in her feedback on papers and was very passive aggressive. I would suggest avoiding her if those things are as upsetting to you as they are to me.
First off, she doesn't even teach. She just gives u a bunch of text or youTube videos. I had to rely on the writing techniques I was taught by my previous English teachers to write my papers. I also went to tutoring. English has always been one of my best subjects, well was, until this class. If you can get another teacher I highly recommend it.
Yikes, I should've read the reviews... just no. - Make sure when u write ur paper u agree with her or u'll get a low grade. I made something up, my friend wrote her own views. I got the 92 and she got a 78 - If u get a bad grade, despite tutoring/rough drafts/dedicating 5 hours a week, it's somehow still ur fault for being a terrible student
Feedback after I spent 6 hrs on a paper: You should have seen a tutor because this paper was not what I was looking for. You ignored all the instructions and didn't address anything I covered... Uh excuse me miss, I did all the assignments, read the texts, watched the videos, and discussed them with others to make sure I understood the text????????
Why are there so many recent views on this page rn? Did we all do bad on the same assignment lol? Anyways she might've been decent teach in the past (according to ancient reviews), but def not the case now. I agree that you should not take her class!! She is so nitpicky. If she doesn't like one thing, she won't like any of it. Trust me
The whole class is a bunch of discussion boards and essays. The final week tho...she assigns a lot of work. As if students aren't already stressed about passing at the end of the semester. This teacher is vile and made me hate writing.
I had an A in Professor Roy's class all semester until the final paper. She gave me a grade that made my average drop to an 89. That's just torture.
I get super stressed near the end of a semester, especially when teachers pile loads of work for students (aka this teacher). This class was sorta triggering for me and gave me just a few mental break downs here and there. These last few weeks though have been the worst and I've thought about just dropping out of the class and giving up.
All she did was give criticism. I've only ever gotten A's in English. It was one of my best classes. I'm so tempted to just not do anymore of the work bc clearly anything I write she hates. I struggled to keep a C in the class (I was a straight A student). She's one of those teachers who takes joy taking off points for every little mistake.
Everything listed in my review is false. She's an awful teacher. Don't take her. I would share my personal experience with this teacher, but you can just scroll down below and read other students... very similar to mine
Tutoring is optional, but she punishes you if you don't go to it????
I really enjoyed her class. Grading is based on 4 essays, weekly discussion boards, and some super easy quizzes. Lectures are just discussions of the assigned readings. I recommended taking notes over the discussions to help write your unit essays. She offers rough draft reviews and it really helps. Just do your works and you will pass.
overall easy class, there were at least two discussion boards a week that would require reading an article and answering questions over them and a min response of 50 words to a classmate. No tests only 4 papers 3-4 pages each and plenty of time to complete every assignment as long as it is done before the due date
Weekly discussion boards. Professor Roy helped me outside of class and allows students to turn in rough drafts for feedback and if you don't do well on the final draft you will have to re-do it. She cares about her students and wants them to succeed. I did not like the material we read and felt like I was in a gender studies class.
I would not listen to the good reviews posted here. I am an amazing writer and English has always been my top subject, not this semester. She graded my posts mostly on the fact I did not agree with her. If you have a different opinion on the texts you read, you're wrong. Do not take this class.more of a Gender Studies class, like others have said.
Dr. Roy is a good professor, she gave us plenty of resources to help us out in our writing and answers emails in a timely manner. There's weekly discussion boards, four papers, and gave us an opportunity to turn in a rough draft so that you have a chance to revise the Paper according to her comments before turning it in.
I'm writing this as a correction to a post I made earlier on in the semester. Reflecting on my writing has caused me to change my mind, however I am unable to take the post down for some reason.
Even for an 8-week course, too much work. The biggest issue was during the last week's final paper where, if we were on schedule, required us to read 2 FULL books, two other sources, and to write 4 pages about all of it AFTER sending your final paper idea to the professor and waiting for the OK to actually start writing, all within a single week.
Dr. Roy's class was amazing. I truly loved being in her class, for those who commented from her online course I would strongly suggest taking her in person. The lectures are more conversation based as a whole class. The homework is important as we spend a significant amount of time going over it and really dissecting the information. Will miss it!
I'm shocked to see some of the reviews here. The only times I received low scores were when I didn't give the class enough time. She does give strict feedback, but I don't think it's a big deal if you disagree. In 1301 I did disagree with her and she still gave me nearly full marks. Best instructor I've had so far through 2nd full-time semester.
This is a Liberal Arts Gateway course focusing on "social, gender, and sexual identities through storytelling." It is quite challenging, and one unit focuses specifically on gender identities. If you are not open-minded this course isn't for you. I loved this class and took a lot away from it, as the topics can easily be transferred to real life.
This course was packed heavily with reading material - I would have preferred less by far, however I understand that Professor Roy wanted us to broaden our reading culture in exploring through a variety of stories, essays, poems, film, novella, etc. Very engaging course that requires participation. Overall I truly enjoyed taking this course.
Was a very work-heavy course, but expected for a college course. Participation matters so that you can contribute thoughtful ideas to the class. I did not do amazing on the papers, but Prof. Roy and the learning labs are always there to help you. Prof. Roy was very eager to teach and incredibly insightful. Respect her time and she will respect you.
She is a tough grader, unequivocal on her guidelines, and if you mess up once, she will make it clear with the grade you receive.
This professor grades VERY harsh. She takes off a lot of points for minor things. Try to find a different prof, seriously.
I really enjoyed my time in 1302 with Prof Roy. If you take this course, you should expect around 2 readings and discussion posts per week and around 4 total papers. She did a fantastic job of familiarizing our classmates and prompting us in class discussions. I felt all of the texts we studied were chosen very thoughtfully. Absolutely recommend!
She was very helpful in writing papers, she gave us guidlines, samples, and examples and made it known to what she was looking for in papers. I honestly liked her grading criteria because it helped me write my papers more efficiently and having to use critical thinking rather than just read and write.
I took her women and gender studies class for English 1302 and it was A LOT of reading. The professor gives ok feedback. She is super sweet though
Prof. Roy's class is challenging but rewarding. She provides great feedback to help you improve. The reading and writing assignments are heavy, but manageable with consistent effort. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for staying on top of the workload.
Do not take this class if you work full time or have other classes, just had to drop this class because out of all my other classes this is beyond the most work I have seen. For this class I would have to be on blackboard every single day after work till I go to bed... No thanks. Why would I make my life harder knowing there is easier teachers???
1. She requires a lengthy test the first week of class over her syllabus. It is required but she doesn't give you a grade. If you do not complete it, she will drop you from the class 2. Her essays are so strict that you will feel like you're in the early 1940s right smack in the middle of Auschwitz. 3. Be prepared to spend many hours here.
Dr. Roy has to be one of my favorite professors. In-class discussions were inspiring and thoughtful, and I thoroughly enjoyed every single class and most works we read. She's great with feedback, and I feel I've grown much as a writer. However, this class is a lot of writing. If you're not the best with writing, this class might not be for you.
TON of reading, and writing. General themes re texts were identity and belonging with a dose of misandry (I am a woman, fwiw) & evils of the patriarchy. Strict guidelines for AI use (she will catch you) and you have to write your papers in google docs, share the link w/ editor privileges so she can see all the edits. I felt like this was invasive.
She will question you about your attendance and threaten to drop you from the class if you miss it twice due to circumstances out of your control. If you have a life outside this class and want to make your life easier don't take it.
I don't know what these other ratings are talking about. Dr. Roy was a great professor. All the graded assignments were just writings essays and some group presentations. No tests or quizzes. She's super energetic and fun and enjoys teaching. There is a lot to read, but they were usually interesting and she goes over them in class anyway.
